Alternative and colorful wine review… …………………………………………………… “There are decades where nothing happens; and there are weeks where decades happen.” Vladimir Ilyich Lenin .………………………………………………… This damsel wine was in no distress…she had a dark rose blush in the glass... but not shy at all. Right off the first pour, an attractive damson scent filled the glass. And I don’t mean a sweet plum, but one with a sharp edge. My fellow tasters noted too some licorice and a citrus ping with a lingering pink rose petal nose. And sipping, she was all damson again, tart, tense fruit. And the damson evolved into pomegranate with some eucalyptus and gooseberry with some tart blackberry and fig leaf astringency. It felt like there must’ve been some cedar wood shavings, soaked in the bottle and I feel like my wine glass had been crafted from mountain stream pebbles with that crisp, stony kind of mouth feel. She was biting, but still smooth enough in her finish. The fig leaf flavor stayed put. I kept coming back to the glass, sipping, like getting pecked on the cheek multiple times, doing my best to really figure out her flavor profile. With a harrumph I exhaled and blew the fig leaf away and all was revealed. #varano #montepulciano Un ottimo Montepulciano marchigiano che è una delle più belle espressioni della denominazione. Ottima complessità ed equilibrio anche se stappare il 2017 è quasi un peccato xchè l'alcol spinge molto ed ancora 2-3 anni in bottiglia lo renderebbero ancora più rotondo ed armonico. Comunque una bella esplosione di frutta nera matura ed in confettura con un sfondo di erbaceo e spezia dolce. Una buona freschezza che pulisce bene ed una piacevole persistenza. I’m reminded of being called in front of the high school principal, and to this day, authority figures still make my hair stand on end. But this is a benevolent matriarch, with bounty to share. She had a dark garnet ruby rim, a mature look. Her nose was a fruitful bouquet of boysenberry and anise with a leathery snap. Despite her maturity, she still had plenty of fruit to offer. Very busty. Plums and figs and blueberry. Clove and anise spiced up the mouth more subtly. The plush mid mouth feel had an oaky structure with a bit of mulch mixed in. But she felt big in your mouth…lots of complexity going on. Decades on, this matriarch wine remains supple and full bodied and bouncing. You could tell she was mature, and yet still had plenty of fruit, forward. It was the background kaleidoscope of flavors and scents that kept you mesmerized. I picture this matriarch relaxing on lake Cuomo, and I would love to take her motorboating ;-).
