I want to share a great free symbol based AAC app I found out about recently!!! It’s called weave chat, and as far as free apps go it’s pretty robust!
Tumblr media
I tried it out and it has lots of pros! But the cons are pretty big. So without further ado:
Pros:
Free
Robust vocabularies
A bunch of boards to choose from
You can add or not add more adult topics like alcohol, sex, and birth control so good for more than just kids!
Also I think the fringe vocab pages for popular kids books is a great idea!
Some basic verb conjugation in verbs, other buttons like -ing and -ed on some boards
Able to chat from the app- especially with support, which replies quickly!
Can save phrases
Good button finder with “show me” how to get to it
Some word prediction
Access to keyboard + the alphabet (buttons say “abc” rather than form words)
They are on instagram and actively improving the app based on suggestions
Cons:
Can’t add new buttons
Can’t edit buttons
Can’t edit boards without going into settings
A lot of nesting categories: food -> bakery-> bread
(May/may not actually be a con to some) they have their own symbols- probably not recognizable if you’re switching apps or use one symbol set at school/in life
Here’s some of the boards they have built in:

I really appreciate that they made categories appropriate for teens and adults! They need mature words!!! I’m pretty sure the created is UK bases bc some words aren’t what we use in the US.

I think the ability to use the boards to make and send messages within the app is really great! Also, you can chat directly with the support line, and they reply quickly! (I found a bug and they replied and fixed it within a day)
Tumblr media
Boo tumblr only lets you put 10 pics in 1 post so I can’t show the basic verb conjugation but I will reblog this to add it!

Hi weave chat anon here to answer your question on how I got the speech feature to work/work better and it seems that only certain voices, for example I use “Nicky”, only says the words that you need it to say, if you aren’t able to hear it at all, you got to make sure your device is not on silent mode
Sorry this is so long

So some kids in the school I work for got AACs… but their parents don’t always remember to bring them to school; and the one from the speech room was sent home with a student who is absent…
SO! I went on the App Store looking for free AAC apps so I can buy a used iPad off FB Marketplace and have MY OWN AAC to use with the kids when this kind of bullshittery happens, and make a preset on the program exactly like the one from the speech room (which is the template for the kids’ actual AACs) so that I can model communication on something appropriate for use in the year 2024 that has more than 25 words on it and doesn’t require a vice grip to press the godforsaken buttons.
Anyway, for anyone who needs it for themselves or others (sharing it here because I’ve never seen it when I’ve looked for free AAC apps in the past):
Weave Chat is the name of the app.
I still have to learn how to set everything up; but from what I’ve seen so far it looks high-quality

(Same asker as before hehe) Thank you for the kind words! You made me feel a lot better about some of the things I do, and about the research I've been doing :] I'd love to hear your suggestions for things that help you out! I'm always up for working on myself and finding things that can help me be better as a person, friend, family member, etc :D
This is honestly a hard ask to answer. I have a lot of modifications and accommodations in place that help me or my kids.
So many that to list them all would take a while and even then I know I would miss some.
What I can do is refer you to some of my previous posts that talk about things and give tips and then also give some suggestions for specific things you want to know about.
Here are two such posts. If you view my tag autism acceptance month you'll find informational posts (talking about masking, hyperfocus, meltdowns/shutdowns, the history of Autism, and more) as well as lists of things like books you may find helpful.
If you want to ask about any specific things just ask. :)
As mentioned before I use nosie cancelling headphones. I also use loops. I always have mine either with me or on.
I use an AAC app. I'll post a few SS of the ones I use and like. I like weave chat cause you can add contacts and send what you want to say to them. It's a little more steps to add your own phrases but it's also super well done that they have a ton of options already on there! But speech assistant is oftentimes faster for me to use because there's no pictures and I read fairly quickly. I also feel like it's easier to add my own phrases in this one. I also use texting and the sticky notes app as a way of just writing things down to send to people or hold up for people to read. I use these on my phone because it's a more compact device and I always have it with me.
