Hey can we talk about how typing quirks are genuinely inaccessible and hurt people with screen readers without being called ableist?? It isn't ableism to want to be able to read what people say and to ask them to provide a plain text alternative to their typing. It's actually kind of ridiculous that I have to ask for plain text when people [heavy typing quirk] "7yp3 l1k3 th1z" [PT: type like this. End PT], especially when it's in disability advocacy spaces (like cripplepunk)

Stand in solidarity with the Miccosukee:
Big Cypress Preserve is part of the Everglades, one of the largest remaining tracts of wetlands on Turtle Island (North America).
The Miccosukee Tribe have lived there since time immemorial and their care for their home has shaped it into the beautiful swamp we know today.
The National Parks Service is trying to rush a change in Big Cypress' designation from a Preserve to a Wilderness area. [plain text: The National Parks Service is trying to rush a change in Big Cypress' designation from a Preserve to a Wilderness area.]
This would give the area stronger protections for water quality, but would significantly limit the Tribe's access to their homelands and completely ignores how their stewardship of the lands and waters was and is crucial in maintaining the health of ecosystems.
There hasn't been a good faith effort to include the Miccosukee in a meaningful way (ie free informed prior consent & input!!!) on this change to their sovereign territory.
If you want to practice allyship, here's a chance. Sign the petition to show your support / solidarity with the Miccosukee. [plain text: Sign the petition to show your support / solidarity with the Miccosukee.]
Personalize it even just a little, even if it's just adding your own name or hometown. If you're able, print it out sign it and mail it. The Tribe and organizers working on this have a goal of getting 500 letters to the NPS/Secretary of the Interior. The online petition is almost at its goal! Just over 2,000 signatures left (as of Mar.16th 2024 21:30EST).
Please please share! I have it on good word that the NPS is trying to push this through before folks really have a chance to hear about what they're doing or make a fuss. So make a fuss we must.
The mailing addresses are below the cut for anyone who can send a physical letter!
Mail to:
Charles F. "Chuck" Sams III, Director
National Park Service 1849 C Street NW Washington, DC 20240
Secretary Deb Haaland
Department of the Interior 1849 C Street, N.W. Washington DC 20240

This is a poll.
This poll is meant exclusively for people who use it/its pronouns in English. If you do not use it/its pronouns in English, you can only use the "show me the results" button, which is the first option AND the last option.
You can use it/its pronouns with combinations of other pronouns and still vote, you just have to actually use it/its themselves in English.
You do not have to be trans or nonbinary to use this poll. The only requirement is that you use it/its pronouns in English.
I'll list the options out here before we get to the poll itself to help those with screenreaders since apparently polls just list all the options at the very bottom of the post:
Option 1: I don't use it/its, show me the results
Option 2: I use it/its, I think they are neopronouns
Option 3: I use it/its, no, I do not think they are neopronouns
Option 4: I use it/its, I do not know if I think they are neopronouns or not
Option 5: I use it/its, I do not care if they are neopronouns or not
Option 6: Option 1: I don't use it/its, show me the results
[Plain text: "If you use it/its pronouns, do you consider it/its pronouns to be neopronouns?" End plain text.]
@it-its-culture-is can you signal boost? Thanks :)
Feel free to reblog even if you don't use it/its!

- dos and don'ts of adding plain text
this is a simple guide meant to help people who want to add a plain text version of their formatted text on their posts but aren't sure how to go about it.
disclaimer: this post is long, but separated into sections using emojis
❌️ put the plain text at the bottom of the post, under a read more, on a link, etc
this makes it harder to find the plain text and makes disabled people have to go through more steps to actually access your post. links are specially bad because if they break, the plain text is lost. a read more will break if your blog is deleted or you change your url.
✅️ make it directly above or below the original text
this way, it's much easier to find for the people who need it, and won't have the risk of breaking or no longer appearing if something happens to your blog
❔️ parenthesis or no parenthesis?
the use of brackets or parenthesis at the start and end of a plain text transcribe isn't too necessary, but it isn't harmful either, so it's up to you to decide if you want to add that or not.
❌️ lack of start and finish mark
if you don't make it clear where the plain text starts and finishes, it will just be confusing, and people will struggle to figure out if it isn't just a caption to the post. people who use screen readers will also have a hard time telling apart the transcription and any comment or caption added
✅️ add a start and finish mark
you can make that in several ways, such as, but not limited to:
- PT: plain text here. End PT
- Plain Text: plain text also here. End of Plain Text
- Start Transcription: plain text here as well. End Transcription
❌️ make the contents different
plain text is meant to make inaccessible text be accessible. if you think the wording on your post is bad, or made a typo, don't use the plain text to fix that
✅️ keep it the same
remember, if you edit the original text, you should also edit the plain text
❌️ make it formatted
plain text is what it says on the tin, plain, default. if you format it in any way, like making it bolded or colored, it'll defeat the purpose of having it in the first place
❔️ what to add plain text to?
any sort of formatted text, such as bold, italics, large or title text, small text, special fonts, colored text, and such
❔️ what not to add plain text to?
bullet points, numbered text and indented text. they may sometimes not actually be read by screen readers, but cause no harm as far as i'm aware
✅️ add to your posts
if someone turns the text from your post into plain text, add it to the original. this way, more people will see the plain text version and it will be more easily accessible then if left ignored
❔️ what if i can't make it?
if, for any reason, you can't add plain text to your post, you can always request people to do so! it's not bad to ask for help and there are plenty of blogs on this site focused on accessibility that could help you with that. and, again, if someone does add plain text to your post, add it to the original
this is all that i could think of, for now, but i hope this is helpful to anyone looking to make their blog accessible

tumblr blackout proposal
tumblr mobile has steadily become near unusable these past few updates. not just from a user experience perspective (which is important enough in itself) but also from an accessibility perspective.
examples include the new way the image viewer works (if you can call it "working"), the tumblr live button replacing the profile button, and that newly created blogs will be forced to have their main dashboard tab be the 'for you' page.
the demands of the protest would be along the lines of:
reverse the recent image viewer update
scrap the new users 'for you' page default setting
let us turn off tumblr live indefinitely
increase efforts against spam / porn bots
make reporting abuse and hate speech as easy as reporting as reporting spam
let us go nuts show nuts again... for real this time
remove flashing ads, including not accepting blaze campaigns for posts with flashing in them
commit to improving usability and accessibility, and listening to users!
(suggestions welcome!)
to protest against these usability issues, and inspired by the recent reddit blackout, i propose a 48 hour blackout (where you don't use tumblr at all). preferably of both mobile and web (since web has problems too) but mobile is the focus here.
[edit: a 'blackout' is when you don't log in, or interact with the site at all, for [x] amount of time.]
I suggest from the 30th of June.
this marks the end of pride month (for the "queerest place on the internet") and the start of disability month (since accessibility is a massive issue here).
tumblr office is in San Francisco, USA, so the times and dates will be calculated using their time zone (PDT).
you can find out the times and dates for your timezone here.
i can't afford to blaze this post so please spread it around as much as possible! protests only work if significant numbers show up!
edit: tumblr rejected the blaze campaigns for this post because they know it would hurt them. let's make this an indefinite blackout - it's the best way to get results.

I love that moment in 1979 Opera Rock Starmania (watched the 2022 edition) where everyone is partying someplace called Naziland because fascists are winning elections via controlling public opinion with fear and manipulation and everyone is incredibly depressed and traumatized by everything going on so they just want to dance their problems away for a night
including a couple of queer folks— a psy-op transvestite woman who created much of the terror via goading a homeless band of queer-coded boys into becoming a real threat of a terrorist gang, and a gay boy who accepted to go to the party as a DJ because that’s the high road to his dream and he doesn’t care who gives it to him, betraying his best friend for this
only for the whole place to get blown up to high heaven with almost every character in it.
by the queer coded gang that put the fascist there with their fascists-manipulated-them-to-do-it crimes. the irony is lost on absolutely fucking nobody
didn’t even mention the ego tripping fascist dating and marrying a suicidally depressed sex icon to get more votes
the fact that a very popular song called Le Blues du Businessman is from there and you’re suddenly no longer laughing about how a song says “I wish I could’ve been a singer” because it’s the half-propaganda half-honest complaint of someone who was so good at winning the capitalist game that he lost everything that made him human to the point that he orchestrates mass deaths to win more
or the two whole songs about queer people being soooo hot, including “i have blue hair and pronouns and you want to fuck (and be) me so bad it’d make you betray all your morals”
1979. I love this show. Requires all the content warnings. Discourse about whether it’s queerphobic would be a mile long and I don’t want to hear any of it. I loathed the first half until I didn’t. I am so autistic about it. I need to watch it again
also the english version of the songs take all the raw bleak nuance out, fuck that. google translate the french versions if you’re interested

Blog Promo!
Tumblr media
Art is from the webtoon comic Daybreak.
Hello, I'm Cerise and I provide plain text! I'm an 18 yo, blasian singlet. I don't do flags/images outside of the text on them due to being color blind. I do plain text for anything unless it contains fonts or is full of closed languages being used for aesthetics. Fonts break screen readers and closed languages should be respected. I'm okay with spam tags, just know I'm only one girlboy.
My dni is the basics, (racist/sexist, zionist, radqueer, lgbtqhobic, anti neopronouns/mogai/liom, etc) But be aware I am an mspec lesbian and anti endo.
My pinned contains more information along with a short list of other ID/PT blogs! I've also made a list of black owned blogs to give our people more of an audience. I'm happy to add more to both lists! Could I get some reblogs please?

- things to transcribe / add plain text to
if you want to be more accessible and make sure other people can see and understand your posts without problem, here are some things that you can transcribe / add plain text to! Feel free to add to the list :]
these may be because they're hard to read, can't be picked up by screen readers, may cause eye pain, and more!
plain text basically means the text is "default": not colored, regular size, not italicised, etc.
# small text
# colored or gradient text
# "special fonts" / "twitter fonts"
# cursive tumblr font
# italics, bold
# letters replaced by numbers or symbols, etc

hey I had a question based on something I've noticed a lot! Why do people put plaintext captions under header text? I can understand if it's like several sentences in header text, but I've seen people do it even when the header tag is being used correctly. I do work on websites and really can't figure out why this is done, since isn't header text good accessibility practice for giving a post a title or sectioning off longer paragraphs of text? Wouldn't the duplication make a post harder to read?
Headers as websites understand them are generally fine for screen readers (acknowledging that not all screen readers operate the same way), but people will sometimes add plain text in addition for those who find reading large or bold text hard to read. And if the header text is also in a different colour, or a gradient on Tumblr, it can be an eyestrain issue for some people. There are probably more reasons I'm missing as well.
Re: that last question, this is one of those scenarios where there isn't really a universal solution, as the duplicate may make it harder for some people even as it helps others. You could in theory make two versions of a post, but then people might not see the versions that are accessible to them. I think it'd be neat for sites like Tumblr to add the option to view posts entirely in plain text and to let users select that as their default if they wanted, but that's more a fantasy than anything else at the moment.

Control+Shift+V pastes text and removes formatting, putting it into whatever the default text is for whatever you're pasting into.
ConvertCase.net lets you paste in text and alter the case style into multiple forms. Good for fixing text that's in all caps.
