miscellaneous things i appreciate about wendell & wild:
-the nuance built into kat’s punkness. yes, she absolutely is a contrarian rebellious teenager, but it’s also genuinely how she’s always been. it’s not portrayed as rebellion for rebellion’s sake, it’s kat’s way of reasserting her identity and her connection to her parents when she’s spent years having her choices stripped from her.
-how many of the characters like kat. raúl sees a kindred spirit. siobhan wants to be her friend and is being kind in the way she knows how. sister helley reaches out to her even before she becomes a hell maiden. wendell & wild are in awe of her. ms. hunter doesn’t let her position prevent her from treating kat like an individual with agency and importance. it’s heartening that kat, a character defined by guilt both personal and state-issued, is coming into a setting where people genuinely want to see her thrive.
-the future sequence where it’s revealed she stays in rust bank and helps restore it to its former glory made me cry. it’s what they all deserve.
-no one has any “it’s my style” excuses for whitewashing when w&w gave us a litany of black characters with individually distinct features.
-even the demons have more emotional intelligence than your average corporate CEO.
-“you don’t get to smack me”
-when all that’s left of the memory monster is the memory of losing her parents, kat hugs it, letting it dissolve into her. she’s acknowledging that the choices she’s made and the things that’ve happened to her have gotten her to this point, but she’s absolving herself of the guilt — embracing her past instead of hating herself for it.
-raúl’s struggles as a trans boy aren’t framed as oppression porn. siobhan’s accidental deadnaming is just that — an accident— and undoubtedly one she’ll learn from in the future. his mother supports him without reservation. kat doesn’t even make note of it. they could’ve easily added catty smiles, tired sighs and “wait, you’re trans?” moments, but they didn’t. raúl is a human being whose transness informs his life without being crushed by it.
-siobhan’s arc is wonderful. she doesn’t become kat and raúl’s personal savior, she doesn’t angst over what she has to do, the story never becomes about her — but she uses her position (read: her class privilege) to do what she can. she becomes part of the solution.
-i know the last two points read like “duh, everyone should be doing that” but it’s such a relief to have a film get these things right, unapologetically so and without a core of virtue signaling. it’s nice to not have the stories we want told held for ransom, then declawed by producers because pissing off uninspired rich people would be bad for business.

The white people who called Kat unlikeable and mean while ignoring her trauma but will praise Coraline even though she deadass called Wybie, the only black kid in the movie, “Why were you born ?”, insults him every time she’s around him and only liked him in the other world where his voice was taken away and followed her around because he had no choice to.

I like to put a bunch of pictures in one cluster on here so that I can access the references I need very quickly since I have so many saved. I private most of them cause I crudely take the photos myself in my natural habitat lol. These are my favorite references I use for Raul except for the best one in my head. and you’ll never guess what I’m putting these on here for atm
I want more drawings, hallways (I mainly just need a hallway for this one but we always welcome more details to come back to) and a map of inside of the school but if I have to see it with my brain I’ll see it with my brain. If you have any, I’d be happy and grateful for them (otherwise im gonna just get started)

Random Raul cocolotl hcs
✏ from someone who couldn't afford Netflix so they couldn't watch the movie but was obsessed with it when it came out—
★ probably hates "your mom" jokes and will go in great detail on why the joke was distasteful, scolds you, then makes you apologize to your guardian figure for your joke. Also falls for "deez nuts" and varieties kinda jokes (he hates them but falls for them alot)
★ loves kids! He is extremely soft-spoken and will always apply to be a temporary babysitter for anyone offering. Hell, he'd do it for free too.
★ is the "weird kid" in school (because same tbh)
★ if you're his friend he'll draw for you! All you gotta do is ask and he'll draw you a page from his sketchbook. Sometimes he'll be the first to ask if he's allowed to sketch you
★ the song "Genius" by Sia, Diplo, and Labrinth belongs to him change my mind
★ his affection is physical touch! He loves to cuddle his partner and is definitely the big spoon. With friends he'll always ask to hold hands or extra hugs from them <:]
★ used to listen to songs like "Take a Hint" and "call me Maybe" then one day shifted to things like Slipknot and Chonny Jash and never looked back
★ speaking of Chonny Jash— he adores them so much that he listens to their songs every day. (And work hard on chores for money to buy merch from them)
★ when he stims: he dances and jumps! Whenever his favorite music pops up on his playlist he'll have a burst energy to dance and run around!
★a hopeless romantic
★ had a gacha phase / gacha reacts: phase
★ wore black nail polish when he was in his edgy phase and never grew out of it even when he got out of his edgy phase
★ will tell grown ups/older kids "You're never too old for trick or treating" and insists you go if it makes you happy:) and will tell adults "never too late to (insert something)" if they're feeling they cant do something because of their age
★ cold spaghetti from a can >>>
