Spelled (Carlos de Vil x Sanderson Daughter) Descendants 3- Ch. 1: A New Beginning
Tumblr media
“Fire burn and cauldron bubble, show me what’s the latest trouble.”
The indigo concoction in the giant cauldron churns and boils, erupting with cold mist. Below, an image of the Isle appears just as the familiar black limo drives over a new bridge. What are you up to, Ben?
“Anything important?” Uma asks from across the room.
“Nothing important to us… so far.”
For the past month I’ve kept tabs on Ben’s- or, Mal’s plans, biding my time for the opportune moment. After I vanished from the garden, I wound up at the forest edge near the sea. I did some exploring and found a sturdy cave with the perfect space to practice my magic. Of course by being close to the water, Uma found me easy as pie. When I explained what happened after she disappeared, Uma agreed to be allies and act as my scout. I must say, the freedom of having no limits has been the best month of my life! I’ve learned so much about transportation, levitation, telekinesis, and transformation spells! And yet… it’s still a prison.
"You want a pineapple?" Uma asks.
"Wha-? Oh, no thanks."
She shrugs and holds up the spiked fruit. "More for me!"
I almost forget just how much is new to her since it's the first time Uma's been off the Isle.
I check the cauldron again and my heart clenches when I see Carlos step out of the limo. “They’re planning on bringing more VKs today. Maybe I could sneak over and-”
“No way, Sparky! Now’s not the time to be rushing into things.”
I groan and walk over to stare off at the ocean. “Uma, I can’t just hide in this cave forever! Sooner or later I want to leave and go home.”
She cocks an eyebrow and crosses her arms. “What if your daddy just has them lock you away?”
“He would never do that! He’s my father, he’ll protect me. I just want a normal life without everyone using me for my magic or trying to lock me up!”
She steps into the water and shifts into her octopus form. “Sure, keep on believing that. I’m gonna go check out the new meat.”
I flash her a warning look. “Be nice, Uma. They’re just kids.”
But she just ignores me and disappears below the surface. Don’t get me wrong, I am no fan of Auradon by any means. But I do hold a soft spot for the kids on the Isle. After seeing how they’re just like me, seeing how much they want a better life, it gives me a purpose worth fighting for even if I’m given no credit.
I grab more ginger root and begin a fear draught.
“And what’s that for?” Binx asks from the bookshelf. Both he and Twilight have been snoozing most of the day.
I roll my eyes. “For educational purposes. It’s not like I’m actually going to poison someone with this.”
“Then why brew it?”
“Just in case I feel like having fun.” I almost don’t believe my own words.
Binx hops down and starts pacing. “I’m not sure about this, Magica. Ever since your fight with Carlos you’ve been much more… disturbed.”
His words tug at my conscience but I ignore him and continue to mix the draught.
“I know what I’m doing, Binx. I’m finally free to do what I want, free of judgment. For once I can actually live without fear of failing anyone!”
“At what cost? You’ve always done this, Magica. Isolate yourself, grow your powers only to plunge back into society and lose control. Have you ever thought about giving up magic-”
I cut him off with a flaming warning finger. “Don’t you dare suggest that. I know I’m more than just my magic, but it’s all I have left! Without my magic I’m just a weak, pathetic girl who has no friends and no future.”
Binx goes to argue but I brush past and start crushing dried peppermint leaves. “Soon enough I’ll leave here and find Father, all in good time. Then we can go back to the cottage and I’ll never have to worry about being alone or hurting anyone ever again.”
I see Binx’s face and immediately know what he’s thinking, because I’m thinking of it too. What if I can’t find Father? Is the future I’m planning really just a fake promise to myself?
“I have returned!” Uma announces from the cave entrance.
“So who’s the new group?” I ask unenthusiastically as I stir.
“Dizzy, Squeaky and Squirmy, and Celia. They’re part of the new student program. Also Hades almost escaped, which left Mal a little drained.” Uma smirks. “I think our time approaches soon.”
I scrunch my nose. “Hades? Why in Auradon would he try to escape? He’s got no authority here, only in the underworld. But whatever. I’ve got bigger fish to fry.” I shoot her a kidding glance when she flinches. “Only joking. Since you’ve given me the thumbs up, whaddya say we go meet the new students?”
“No.” Uma shakes her head and goes to grab some sushi out of the fridge. “It’s still too risky. Besides, from how Mal reacted to Hades I’d say she’s not gonna accept you too quickly. Have you seen how much security she’s got? One look at you and they’ll send you off to the Towers for sure!”
This news makes my concerns grow darker. “Towers? As in… like a prison?”
Uma doesn’t answer right away, deciding if she should say more. “Now that Mal’s declared a witch hunt for me, no offense, she had Ben build a prison called the Towers for criminals. Since they’re trying to eventually reopen the barrier she thought it’d be safer to have that instead.”
Each word sends me spiraling deeper into the doubt and fear that’s been creeping into my head. After everything I’ve done… everything I’ve worked for… How can they act so cold?
My silence leads Uma to become uneasy. “You ok Sparky?”
I shake my head as purple flames keep flashing from my hands, the entire cave starting to shake. I look to Binx for help, but all he can offer is expression of pity.
“Somewhere deep in me I always thought I’d never be able to change their minds, never be accepted as someone… normal. And since when does Ben just go along with whatever Mal says? He should know me better and speak on my behalf! He- They- I… I’m done playing by their perfect rules!”
I grab my cloak and storm out onto the beach with Uma rushing after me.
“Where are you going?”
“To sulk someplace where my heritage is supposed to be locked up, and maybe find a new purpose for myself.”
With that I spin and vanish in a cloud of purple smoke.

Hi me again ^-^ thank you for answering my question and if you ever write it I'll read it 😊 so I don't know if you'll accept this request or not but if you do can you make the Pet AU with any boys of your choice from Twisted Wonderland and kinda nsfw please??
Big thank you if you do it love you😘😊💕
Sooo..... I can’t for the life of me figure out how to do a Pet Au for this fandom. >.> My normal route is either “non-human characters are domesticated” or “human characters as hybrids”. And since Twisted Wonderland has furries, neither of those really work. I’m uhhhh.... stuck.
Thus, this isn’t gonna be Pet Au. It’s gonna be like... Slave Au or something, idk. A friend helped me figure out a general concept, which amounts to the characters in question being basically pets, just without the inhuman/domestication concept. I’m not giving any context here for now, because that requires thinking this through, and I’m not doing that until if/when I make this an actual Au. XD
I tried to pick a varied selection, so here we go!
. . .
Vil
His main issue in this Au is that he wants to be a companion type. But instead of having that kind of connection and “treasured” role that he longs for, Vil always finds that goal out of reach. He’s too intimidatingly pretty and externally cold and particular to be seen as comforting or approachable, and that combined with his good looks mean that he’s usually stuck as a mere trophy piece. Vil’s existence is one of discontent. He struggles with wanting to be loved but never being more than a pretty “thing” to use.
Ruggie
He’s the very definition of “making the best of it”. Whether he likes his situation or not, Ruggie is going to do whatever it takes to get ahead and live comfortably. Dignity doesn’t matter a bit to him. He’ll be as servile and submissive as his owner requires. For good food, gentle treatment, and the vital fondness of his owner, Ruggie won’t hesitate to throw away his pride and do what he needs to. However, he can also be somewhat tricky toward his owner, and tends not to be the most loyal one to keep.
Azul
Nervous wreck defines it better than anything. Azul is constantly on edge in this kind of situation. He can never relax when he knows that he could be punished at any second for messing up. There’s way too much for him to worry about. However, he’s intelligent and crafty enough that he has his methods for getting ahead. He’s a lot smarter than he’s given credit for. Azul definitely tries to manipulate his owner and pull some strings to feel safer, but his main motivation is simply avoiding suffering.
Jamil
In Jamil’s case, he has a very specific strategy for staying ahead. For the most part, he’s all but perfect. Almost perfect. Jamil tends to use calculated, measured “mistakes” to make sure that he’s never too perfect. While he’s always good enough to keep his value and remain in his owner’s favor, Jamil also knows better than to get ahead of himself and set people’s standards for him too high. He’s very bitter about his position in life, but knows that he has to do what’s necessary to live as safely as possible.
Rook
He’s... an interesting case. Rook constantly gets passed from owner to owner primarily because of the fact that he’s deeply, incredibly weird. Even as a slave, he’s creepy and unnerving enough that people don’t want to be around him for too long. He’s been with a lot of people, seen a lot of places, and has kept the same bizarre outlook through all of it. Nothing seems to bother Rook in any way. No matter how bad of a situation he’s in at any given moment, he’s constantly finding the beauty in it.

I noticed how most of the parents of the main dorm heads (including Jamil) are worst in their own ways, no matter how good or bad they treated their kinds. One that strikes my interest is Malleus' Grandma, The Queen. I can tell how much she loves her grandson but her way of parenting wasnt good. I mean, she sheltered Malleus almost all his life and she wasnt even there for him because she's busy. It dealt a huge toll in his emotional and social knowledge that he clearly needs.
Part 2: Next is Vil's Dad. I get how he is so hands on to his son and how he didnt pressure him into the role and encourage him to do better, but he seems to fail to see Vil's insecurities, also the fact he is also busy in his movies to even give more attention to Vil. I get that he knows how Vil can handle himself but he still needs some wisdom and support.
Part 3: Next is Azul's parents before the divorce (before his mom remarried). It seems to occur to me that other than bullying, he is also facing issues from his family and because of this, he didnt bother to tell them his problems and endure it for years. Even after the divorce and his mom remarried, Azul didnt tell them about his pain back in the past.
Part 4: Next is Leona's parents. I dont get whats with the darkness in his family. I mean his age gap with his older brother, Farena is 10 years, and he does genuinely love Leona, even when he is 20, he still looks after him. What I am curious about is their parents, where the f*** are they when Leona is suffering being compared at such a young age? Do they even care for Leona? This gives me a possibility that he might be an accidental child and it makes me feel bad for him more.
This will contain lots, and I mean, lots of spoilers for lots of TWST media involving characters of TWST! From main story spoilers about those who Overblot, to details from Personal Stories of characters! There is almost nothing here that isn’t full of spoilers, so if you are looking a non-spoiler theory, this is not it chief!  This has lots, and lots of information and speculation in it, so beware! Discussion of it is more than welcome!
Yup! Riddle most definitely applies to this as well, as his most is basically a tiger parent, to an almost creepy degree as she basically controlled Riddle’s life down to the second.
The only people that could be an expectation is Kalim and Idia.
As far as we know, Kalim came from a decently loving household, but based on behind the scenes stuff, that’s debatable since Kalim might be a case of a spoiled child. He’s Spoiled Sweet, luckily, but it’s certainly something to talk about, as I think it’s an interesting scenario.
We don’t know much about Idia’s family. He doesn’t speak of them much, but from how he speaks of them, they seem fairly normal. Though, with how Idia is, that also is up from debate as well. We’ll have to see in Chapter 6. Hopefully we’ll see them and get a feel for them. And hopefully they are, normal people.
I’m going to try to analyze the family situations of those who’ve Overblotted, since we have the most information on them. I suppose I can do the other TWST characters’ family situation if you all want, just ask if you want me to do others family life we know of!
Credit to @twstarchives for the post about the TWST boy’s family! I owe you a lot for that post instead of searching through TWST’s files for it! And @arcdiris and @alchemivich as always for the dividers and character gifs! Thanks so much for the awesome work you two!
Grab a drink and some snacks everybody, because this is going to take a while. So, here’s a cut to save your dashboard!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Let’s start with Riddle, the one we know has family problems! From his Overblot-Flashback-Thingy, we know Riddle’s mom is. . . not a good parent. Mrs. Rosehearts is basically an extremely controlling tiger mom. She controls everything about Riddle’s life, down to the second as seen in Riddle’s childhood. Which Riddle most likely doesn’t like from the dialogue we’ve gotten in his flashback, but since he grew up that way he learned to deal with and Riddle must have most likely aware of his mother’s not-so-great behavior at a young age. Riddle doesn’t talk about his father much, and isn’t seen in Riddle’s flashback, so we don’t have much to work with there. But, he is mentioned by Riddle in his Ghost Marriage voice lines, saying he and Mrs. Rosehearts don’t get along. Riddle also says both of them are magical doctors.
What does this mean? If I had to take a stab at things, either Mr. Rosehearts is not very involved in Riddle’s and Mrs. Rosehearts’ life possibly due to work or lack of interest, or Mr. Rosehearts and Mrs. Rosehearts are divorced. We don’t have enough proof to say one way or the other, but I personally think Mr. Rosehearts just isn’t all that interested in Riddle and Mrs. Rosehearts. Why? I think he and Mrs. Rosehearts married out of a love that just didn’t last, as Riddle says they don’t get along. And now, the two just don’t love each other anymore. They are probably only staying together because of Riddle, if they are still together. It’s hard to tell at this point. Hopefully we get some clarification in the future.
What effects does Riddle’s family situation have on him? Well, as we can see, Riddle basically has no experience with true relationships, follows rules religiously, and values his schoolwork above pretty much anything else.
We know Riddle has issues with social situations, as he isn’t good at dealing with others without losing his temper and more often than not needs Trey and Cater to help him out with them, which must have been from Riddle’s lack of true friends and social situation where Riddle could grow and develop and where he doesn’t have the power in the relationship.
We also know Riddle follows the rules religiously and believes in punishments when someone breaks the rules, even if minor rules, and Riddle doesn’t quite understand what the spirit of a law means (for those of you who don’t know what that means, the spirit of the law is the deeper meaning behind the law or reason for the law in the first place. Like if I say, “Please do not watch TV until you’ve finished dinner!” and instead, you pull out a tablet and watch a TV show, yes, you where following the rules, but I’ll still but upset with you because you didn’t understand what I meant by my command. I meant, “Please finish your dinner! Videos and TV later!” that was the message behind my command. This term often used in more religious contexts, though so it’s kind of not common), I think Riddle developed this at a young age as a psychological way to keep himself safe from punishments. If he followed the rules, he wouldn’t get hurt or be in trouble. And later on in life, he saw someone someone else getting punished when he followed the rules, and developed a mindset of, ‘If you follow the rules, you won’t get hurt, and you’re above others who fail!’ which I think led to Riddle, well, gaining the mindset of if you enforce the rules, you’re in charge. Since Riddle lacked power in his life from his mother, I think that’s why he was a tyrant to Heartslabyul during Chapter 1, because he thought that was how power structures worked. While he wasn’t wrong, he didn’t understand that people aren’t rule-followers like him and rules are not absolute. Which, in the later Chapters, Riddle has loosened up on.
Riddle also values schoolwork above most everything else. If I had to guess this as well, at a young age, only Riddle’s schoolwork efforts where praised, so he learned to like schoolwork, no matter how hard it is. Since, well, Mrs. Rosehearts only really let him do schoolwork.
Riddle’s feelings on his parents don’t seem to be all that complicated. Because despite knowing his mother is extremely controlling, he still loves her, or at the least relies on her from how much he spoke of her during Chapter 1. As from his father, that’s unclear.
The takeaway? Riddle’s been really affected by his parents pretty negatively throughout his life, but nevertheless, Riddle’s pushed on with life and still seems to care for them. He’s got not so great mindsets, but he’s still pushing forward.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next is Leona! We don’t know much of Leona’s parents, as Leona doesn’t speak of them too much. He did mention his father in his birthday story, saying his father was sick with possibly deadly disease, with his older brother Farena taking his father’s place as king. And. . . We have nothing on Leona’s mother. Leona has not mentioned her once, sure, he made a passing comment about asking if Ruggie was his mother, but other then that, we’ve strangely heard nothing of her. All we’ve heard about is Farena, his wife, and their son, Cheka.
What does this mean? I think this means Leona’s parents are out of the picture for the story. We know Leona’s father is sick, so might die from the illness and it’s possible that probably what’s been widely accepted. Leona’s father is basically on his death bed, and his kingdom knows. As for Leona’s mother? This is a compete shot in the dark since I have no proof of this, but I think Leona’s mother died giving birth to Leona. I think Leona’s mother was well respected among the people, since females are well-respected in the Afterglow Savanah according to Ruggie, and when she died during pregnancy, the people turned their hatred towards Leona, blaming him for something that really isn’t his fault which could explain why they target Leona so horribly. Do I think Leona was an accidental child? It’s unclear right now. There’s not enough proof one way or the other to say yet. I personally don’t think so, since in lion biology step-siblings basically can’t happen since, well, when lions take over a pride they kill the pervious pride’s children.
As for the more relevant side of Leona’s family, it’s not hard to tell what exactly Leona’s problems with Farena, his wife and Cheka are because, of, well, his backstory and how much it impacts Leona at NRC. Leona was mistreated by the kingdom for something that isn’t really his fault, and he’s bitter about it. While Farena is trying to build bridges between the two, I just don’t think Leona’s ready for that yet. Yes, while MC probably sped up the process for Leona to heal, I don’t think Leona’s ready for building bridges yet. I will give Farena credit for trying, though.
What affect does this have on Leona? Well, as we see in-game, Leona’s depressed about his life and wants a place where he can feel like he matters, since well, he lacked that kind of interaction at home.
It’s not hard to tell Leona’s depressed. From how he sleeps for most of the day, skips classes, how he acts with others. . . it’s kind of clear he’s pretty depressed. Which, I think developed from, well, how he’s been treated his whole life. If you’re treated badly your whole life, then you’ll feel bad about yourself.
Leona also wants a place where he feels he belongs, to well, hopefully make himself feel better. And, luckily, he’s got that. He’s Savanaclaw’s respected dorm leader, after all.
Leona’s feelings on his family seem pretty complicated. I don’t think he hates his father, or his mother, as he doesn’t speak of them much and seems to be quite neutral about his father. I think he feels indifferent towards his father, as he feels sad his father, and his only way to the throne will go away, but knows that it’s unavoidable and he can’t do anything about it. However, his feelings on Farena as less complicated. I think he genuinely hates Farena. From how much he speaks of Farena, and how much he expresses it. I think his hate is genuine, and Leona basically blames Farena for his own problems. I don’t think he blames his sister-in-law, as he says he respects her, and from what we know of women in the Afterglow Savanah, I’d agree.
But, I think Leona’s feeling on Cheka on extremely complicated. I don’t think he blames Cheka for anything, despite what he says and is more trying to convince himself of that. As, he treats Cheka with respect despite pushing Cheka away, he hasn’t hurt Cheka, and most we’ve seen him to do the little one is talk not so nicely, and with what lions can do to each other, Cheka is pretty safe with Leona despite what Leona says. So, I think Leona doesn’t actually hates Cheka for anything. And, Cheka is moreso a physical reminder that, well, Leona is the second in line and will never be king now. I think Cheka sort of acts as a morality pet for Leona. Which basically means, I think Cheka is turning Leona into a better person. How? Despite Leona pushing Cheka away, and showing clear disinterest in the cub, Cheka comes up to him anyway, be it innocence or pure love from his uncle. I think despite Cheka reminding him of his fate, Leona appreciates it deep down, since it means that someone from his home acknowledges Leona, as well, Leona. Not as the terrible second prince, or the scary magic user. But as an amazing Magical Shift player, Cheka’s uncle, and a leader of his own pride.
Leona’s feelings on the matter are actually quite unclear. I think Leona’s healing, and learning to work his feelings, so his feelings are always changing.
The takeaway? Leona’s also been really affected by his family and the people around him at home, but I think he’s learning to cope with it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now Azul! While for a while, we didn’t know much about Azul’s family because well, unlike other characters it wasn’t really relevant to his backstory, we do now! Azul’s biological mother and father are divorced. We know a lot of Azul’s biological mother, as Azul is still with her. She’s a restaurant owner, and made lots of foods for Azul when he was younger, which Azul says probably made him a foodie. We don’t know that much about Azul’s biological father, but we do know a lot about Azul’s step-father. He was the divorce lawyer for Azul’s mother, I believe. The two fell in love, and the two are now married. Azul also has said he has a grandmother, who is a powerful mage known for her acts of service.
What does this mean? Well, for one, we have our first character that has officially divorced parents. While Azul hasn’t said why, and most likely won’t for a while if at all, I think that’s a cool thing for the team of TWST to do. As while, yes, people who stay together are common in TWST it seems, I think Azul’s backstory can help show those whose parents aren’t together, like in our world, giving Azul more relatability, even if to a a smaller group in Japan. Because where I come from, divorce is pretty common and I know at least a few people that have divorced parents. But, in terms of Azul’s past, I think this means to a degree, Azul can’t relate to his family that well at times. (Now, I might be very wrong about this, since I have no personal experience with divorce and only really have heard other’s experiences with the topic, so please feel free to correct me if you do have actual experience. I’d be happy to hear it!) From what I’ve heard from people from divorced families, at times they feel like at outcast because they’re biological family is separated, and their parents have moved on but they have not, or feel guilt that they are the reason the parents are being divorced. I think Azul feels at times he can’t relate to his mother at times and add unto the fact he was bullied for being different, I think Azul may have issues relating to his mother and step-father, mostly because he may not want to burden his happy mother with his issues. Hopefully, we’ll get more information on the matter in the future.
What effect does this have on Azul? I think while right now, we can’t see the effects of Azul’s disconnect with his family now, probably because Azul is working to fix the disconnect, but I think it really affected Azul in the past.
While I don’t we have a clear time period for when his biological mother and father got divorced, or even why, from how Azul acts I think it happened when Azul was young. Hence, why Azul seems to be over it now that he’s older. I actually think it might have happened around the time Azul was bullied, if not during, hence giving a reason to why Azul was bullied. While messed up, it could be the case since I think in Japan, children can get bullied for having divorced parents since that’s not ‘normal’ in Japan. Though, I hope that is not the case for Azul. Moving on, since his biological parents where getting a divorce, I think Azul didn’t really talk about his problems with his parents, possibly because he wanted to deal with it on his own, possibly because he didn’t want to bother his parents about it. It’s unclear right now. But, because of his lack of support at home, I think he learned to depend on Jade and Floyd for the emotional support, hence why he’s so close with the two and it seems that he only really seems to care for the twins’ entertainment and wellbeing at times. Because of his dependence on his parents, I think he grew distance at home. Which, I think as Azul grew older, he regretted. Hence, why he’s trying to get more involved with his family.
I think that’s why he has this friendly competition with his mother about the restaurants, and learned law with his step-father, hence why he’s good at it now. Because Azul wants a better relationship. Can I prove this? Nope. I’m probably pulling this out of nothing, but hey. I’m trying here.
The takeaway? Despite what little information we have on Azul’s home life, I think at one point, Azul grew distant from his family and is now trying to mend that relationship while still trying to keep close with Jade and Floyd. The relationship this family has is surprising doing alright, all things considered, I think.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Up next is another boy that may have family issues, Jamil! We know quite a lot know Jamil’s family, thanks to the recent event, Al'ab Nariya! We’ve met Jamil’s littler sister, Najima, the family of a character introduced to us! We haven’t met Jamil’s parents, but thanks to Jamil’s Overblot-Flashback-Thingy and the Al'ab Nariya event, we have lots of information to work with, thankfully! Jamil’s parents are servants of the Asims, with Jamil’s father being the one to be the most adamant about it, which makes me think Jamil’s father grew up in this, and Jamil’s mother married into this. Which, I have no proof of if it’s true or not.
What effect does this have on Jamil? From Jamil’s backstory, we can clearly see the position he was most likely born into has a huge effect on him. Jamil was pressured at a young age, most likely by his own parents, to act dumber than he actually is while also being being hypercompetent sidekick to Kalim. Which, from Jamil’s motive for Chapter 5, clearly had an affect on him. He felt he basically was living for someone else, and became resentful of others, namely Kalim. While I don’t think he blames Kalim for his situation, mainly because Jamil’s grown up with Kalim is whole life and probably also understands that Kalim can’t be blamed for something that’s not his fault, and also Kalim’s kinda not the brightest. But, Jamil was trying to convince himself that it was Kalim’s fault until well, his chapter happened. I think Jamil actually blames his parents more for his situation now and wants to break out of it, hence why he says he’ll stick with Kalim.
I think Jamil’s father actually is the one Jamil blames the most. Since in the Overblot flashback, we see Jamil’s father being the one to tell Jamil to hold back, and Jamil comments he’s quite anxious. Since I think Jamil’s father was born into the servitude, I think Jamil will blame his father the most for his situation. So, I think Jamil and his father don’t get along very well. While I think it’s unclear if Jamil even loves his father, I think even if Jamil does care for his father, he still has at least a little resentment towards him.
I don’t think Jamil blames his mother for his situation. I honestly think she married into the family, as from how Jamil and Najima talk about her, I think they both deeply care for her. Which, leads me to believe Mrs. Viper married into this, and probably feels just a trapped as Jamil at times.
We know Najima and Jamil get along. We’ve seen them interact in the Al'ab Nariya story, and it seems like a healthy relationship. I think these two actually do love each other, and care deeply from one another. I think Najima has things better off than Jamil does, and Jamil may have some envy there, but other than that, I think these two are perfectly healthy siblings, as they joke, talk, and even help out each other. Which, I loved seeing, especially when TWST has shown, well, examples of less healthy sibling relationships.
The takeaway? I think while Jamil is resentful of his servant situation, I think he cares for his family, with the exception of maybe his father, and is trying to break out of what he was born with.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And last, but certainly not least, Vil! The only family member we known of on Vil’s side, is, well, his father. Vil hasn’t mentioned anyone else, leading me to believe that Vil’s other family is either dead, or out of the picture for Vil.
What does this mean for Vil? Well, I think it depends on what exactly the situation is. If Vil only has his father as a living relative, then that kinda of makes things worse for Vil, even if he doesn’t know it. If Vil does have living relatives, I think then we can place more of the blame on Vil’s father for Vil’s current state.
See, if Vil has no living relatives other than his father, then his father’s behavior is at least kind of explainable. He’s a single dad who is trying his best to support his only child and they have no support otherwise. So, if he throws himself into his work, he’ll get paid more, and thus, Vil survives.
If Vil has living relatives, than I can safely say that, to a degree, he’s putting Vil in danger knowingly. Since, if Vil’s father’s own family members have to basically cut themselves off from Vil and his father to keep themselves safe from the paparazzi, it not only means he’s extremely popular and dedicated to his career to a possibly unhealthy degree, but that he also has done nothing to protect those around him. Which, is not the kind of actor you’d want to be around.
No matter the case of Vil’s family background, I’d say Vil’s father isn’t great no matter what. Seeing as how he’s let Vil’s insecurities go out of control, and possibly made it worse. And, from what we’ve seen, he’s been mostly absent throughout Vil’s life despite how much Vil loves him.
When we first see Vil’s father, he tells Vil the director has either strange or great taste, (depending on the translation you’ve gotten) in making the world’s cutest boy the villain. And when Vil asks if he’s that scary to others, what does his father say? No, your chosen to be the villain because you’re beautiful and wonderful, and that the villain’s role is important to the story and Vil should be proud.
Which is the most generic thing you can say, if a little insulting to Vil who most likely already knew that already, since he’s played those types of roles before.
Villains have the potential to be extremely complicated characters, even being the most complicated character in the movie purely based on themes and messages the character may have. And, Vil’s father, as an actor, should know that better than anyone else. But, he doesn’t say that. Why? It’s unclear, but if I had to take a stab at things, Vil’s father can’t relate to his son in being the villain. I would bet he’s always been the lead star, and the hero of a story and only really sees it as, well, as job and it’s been so long since he’s played a villain role, if at all. So, he can’t help Vil in that department. But, then why didn’t he tell Vil that villains can be better then the heroes, purely because they are allowed to be complicated, unlike heroes? Or point him to someone how can tell Vil that? Why leave Vil to figure out himself?
As an actor, he should know, better than anyone else, without villains, there is no story to be had and the villain archetype is so fluid it can be interpreted infinite amounts of ways. So, villains can be anything they want to be, the only require they have is, that, they cause problems for the main character. They could be something as simple as the local guy who just happens to cause trouble, even if they don’t mean it, to the over-the-top villain who sits all day in his castle laughing and curling their hair about their super evil plot. While, the hero, is a balancing act. You have to make the hero believable to us as people, or we just won’t engage in the story. Which, is often why most authors just make the main character bland so it can be easy to fall into their shoes. Villains can be over-the-top, comical characters that don’t even have to follow the basic rules of being human, because they don’t have to. We don’t need to believe the villain is real. We can just watch a villain do their thing because he’s, at the end of the day, a character that we can watch do their thing, and it doesn’t affect us. The hero? They have to have some level of believably in them. I not, the audience can’t be interested in them, at all. A villain can save a movie on their own, purely because we get to see them do stuff on screen, a hero cannot save a movie on their own. A hero is dependent on it’s surroundings to, well, be who they are.
So, Vil’s father making such a generic statement about villain? To me, it’s almost disingenuously insulting to say to Vil when Vil’s father should know better. And, yes, while it can be argued Vil is a child and might not understand, Vil is pretty mature for his age. Even though he kind of needs to be to, well, be an industry like the movie industry.
How has this affected Vil? For one, we’ve seen that Vil has had to push himself to probably almost unhealthy limits to get himself recognized. And as far as we know, his father has not stopped him from doing this, probably because he lacks influence in Vil’s life.
I think Vil, deep down, is trying to get his father to notice him.
We know from Vil’s Overblot-Flashback-Thingy that Vil wants to be the hero, or the last one standing on stage, meaning Vil wants, to some degree, attention. If I had to guess why that is, it’s because of his father. Vil’s father, being a famous actor, mostly left Vil to his own devices and probably was at more movie shoots that at home. Vil most likely became interested in acting because he wanted to know why his father, an actor, was not always home. So, became involved in acting to figure out why, and seeing as his father has such a high influence in the industry, when Vil’s father caught wind of Vil’s interest, Vil’s father got Vil into the industry, and the industry took advantage of it. As, we know Vil has been in acting since he was a child, and Vil still is pretty popular even now. And, then, I think Vil started to figure out how the industry works: As long as you have a spotlight on you, you’re safe. But the minutes that spotlight is gone, so goes the attention. And, since he wants his father’s attention, I think he’s trying to be his father’s successor, in a strange way, so he’s getting all the attention in the world, because he wants people to look at him and thus, if others look at him, his father will see him.
It’s not exactly clear if this is working, so hopefully we get more clarification on this, or at least, see Vil’s father’s side of the story.
But, fear not. I don’t think from how Vil behaves that he had just his absent father to guide. I actually think that Vil got another father figure, like the universe is trying to make up for Vil’s lack of father. How do I think it is? I think it’s Jack’s family picked up the slack that Vil’s father left behind.
Now, I totally might be pulling this out of my ass purely because I am biased towards the friendship of Jack and Vil, but hear me out.
Jack and Vil clearly met at a young age. And as we’ve seen in personal stories of Vil, Jack is featured. Quite a lot, almost like Trey and Cater is often featured in Riddle’s personal stories, and we know Trey and Cater have an impact on Riddle’s school and personal life. Vil is often even associated with Jack outside of the main story, on multiple occasions, from the Pomefiore Training Camp, the Halloween Event, the Beans Day Event, there isn’t an event I remember where Jack and Vil aren’t on screen together at some point in the story with these two involved. Vil clearly shows care for Jack, in his own ways. Like in his ceremonial story, he fixes Jack’s robes, even though Jack is not in his dorm at all and it’s implied Vil moved away at one point and they lost contact. But, despite Vil moving away, he still remembers Jack, and even has fond memories of his time with Jack as seen in his birthday story lines. Vil also hasn’t clearly mentioned who took care of him while his father was away, or even who took care of him.
So, here’s what I think happened. Vil and Jack met after Jack defended Vil from other children that mistook Vil as the villain in a show they watched, and Vil became interested in Jack, seeing as Jack saw him differently then others did and Jack became Vil’s first real friend. And, most likely due to his father not being home, he would at times go to Jack’s place to find comfort with others. Thus, met Jack’s family. Jack’s family upon hearing Vil’s situation, probably kind of took Vil into their family. I think Vil and the Howl family had a good relationship, as Jack seems to have done lots of activities with Vil that Vil remembers fondly, like the Aurora Borealis, and I think Vil’s father trusted the Howl family with Vil, or didn’t know about the arrangement as we have no evidence of Vil and Jack being uncomfortable with each other. I think that Jack’s family helped Vil grow and develop into who he is, in that they helped make him more mature as a person, and taught Vil life lessons Vil’s father wouldn’t. But then, Vil had to move away. While it was probably devastating for Vil and Jack, the two seemed to have gotten over it, but met each other again at Night Raven, where clearly they aren’t separating anytime soon, as in personal stories of Vil, they met up a lot in the present.
But, we have the Ignihyde arc coming! Hopefully we get more information on Vil and Jack’s relationship then, as Jack might be more in the picture during Chapter 6!
The takeaway? Vil probably had a absent father, and thus, why he wants attention, and maybe he got another figure in his father's place.

Day 15: 🐍 Eclipsed 🐍
A letter arrives in the mail. It is plain, unassuming—just as any letter would be. Normal paper, normal handwriting. Normal, normal, normal... Save for the flourish in the final few paragraphs and the signature. You doubt you would be able to distinguish it in a pile of papers if you just went by most of the body of the lettet. Perhaps that was the intention of the sender, though: to be unassuming, and to strike when one least expects it.
A small bottle has come with the letter. There appears to be a mixture of powders and dried herbs inside of it. It smells wonderful—vaguely like your favorite food, though when you show off the contents to Grim, he tells you it smells like tuna instead. The label on the bottle reads “Special Seasoning by Jamil V”.
***Spoilers for chapters 4 and 5!***
Ramshackle Prefect,
Kalim insisted that I join him in sending you a letter of gratitude. He hovered over my shoulder for quite some time, begging me to proofread his own letter for him or asking me what I planned to write in mine. Honestly... that boy causes me so much trouble. In the end, I was able to wave him off and properly gather my thoughts.
Regarding the “winter break incident”... I do not regret my actions one bit. Condemn me if you wish, call me evil—but never say that I was not chasing my aspirations.
You have no idea what it is like to be me. Do you realize the disparity between myself and Kalim? He is the golden boy—the sun. And I—the moon, perpetually eclipsed and drowning in darkness.
I am forever fated to operate as a servant from the shadows, for the sake of a boy that barely understands how ignorant he really is. He can only smile so carefreely because he is unaware of how the other half lives. How we fight and claw and struggle to survive, to cater to those at the top.
It would be a different matter entirely if I had willingly signed up for this lifestyle. But I did not. From the moment I was born, my destiny had already been decided. It is one that will forever be tied to Kalim’s. I am bound by my bloodline, and its history.
I desire so much more than that.
Would you tell a broken winged bird he is not meant to return to the skies? A finless fish he should perish on land because the water will not welcome him? A venomous snake he should not bite because the world tells him it is wrong? No. They will do as any animal would—when backed into a corner, they will strike back.
I was tired of playing second fiddle to Kalim, tired of seeing him be praised for doing the absolute bare minimum, while I worked to the bone doing his duties. Holding myself back from excelling so that he, by comparison, would look better. I was always limiting myself. Stopping short of shining too brightly. Reaching for the stars that I could not see, right as they slipped out of my grasp.
I began to resent him—Kalim, and everything that he represented. I wanted to seize all that he had for myself. It was only fair. I had put in all the effort for him, so it only made sense for me to claim the titles and the credit as well. Because I want to shine, too. I want to be acknowledged, recognized, praised.
Selfish? Perhaps. I have never claimed to be a good person. It is only fools like Kalim that will continously insist that I am, or that I have the potential to be. Even worse are the people like Azul, who only approach me with shady intentions in mind. The sparkle I seek is not tied to teaming up with others. It is only within myself that I can grow and improve the strength of my skills.
This is who I am: Jamil Viper, unabashedly so.
In a way, I suppose I am almost thankful for the “winter break incident”. Though I was not successful with my plot, I was finally able to show my “true self”, the “me” I was repressing for Kalim’s sake. I can be myself, at long last, and excel at whatever endeavors I please. The cruel, conniving “me”... Of course it scared everyone.
... Kalim, that idiot. Even after all of that, he believed in me and talked the rest of Scarabia into giving me another chance. He had always been good at smoothing things over—perhaps a trait inherited from his father. “Why?” I asked him. “Why did you do it? For someone like me?” And Kalim’s only reply was... “Because I like you, Jamil!”
It is a simple answer, as to be expected of him. No matter how many times I told him I didn’t want his pity, he continued to brush it off. He said if I didn’t want to be friends, we could be rivals instead. “You don’t need to hold back anymore. Take me on with everything you’ve got!”, so he said.
Being “myself”. Having “more”. The sun finally left, and the moon’s light was no longer overshadowed. At last, my wish has come true—although not in the way I expected it to. So, for that... I thank you.
At VDC, I could dance and sing my heart out—I could shine the brightest I ever could. I surpassed Kalim, just as I had always wanted, garnered the praise I had long sought out. Me, Jamil Viper. They were cheering for me.
Ramshackle Prefect, consider my help at VDC as payback for your “help” during winter break. I had the foresight to clear out the audience and staff members before Vil-senpai’s Overblot, and I even came to rescue you on the magic carpet. With that, my debt is repaid—and I am free to act as I please.
Well... Perhaps that is not entirely true. It is not so easy to cast off the shackles of servitude the Viper family wears. I will continue to serve at Kalim’s side. It is not because I enjoy his mediocrity or his idiocy. This is simply a decision I have made of my own will, as I have deemed it to be the least troublesome for myself.
I will see where things go from here, and alter my plans accordingly. One day, I hope to break free entirely, so that I may finally grasp those diamonds awaiting in the sky. For now... I am content being “me” and coexisting with Kalim, just as the sun and moon do.
Best regards,

Flashback Solo Para: Fault (Ben)
“This isn’t their fault!” “No, son. It’s yours.”
It’s always his fault.
Ben knows his parents won’t approve of his decision for his first proclamation, looking out the window at the Isle during his fitting. But he thinks back to his dream, to that girl with the purple hair and... and he knows it’s the right move when he turns and addresses them.
“Mom, dad--”
“Ah, mm,” and Ben’s stopped from stepping down off the platform.
He steps back. “I’ve chosen my first official proclamation.” And I already know how you’re going to feel about it... spit it out.
“I’ve decided that the children on the Isle of the Lost be given a chance... to live here in Auradon.” And he braces himself as they all freeze, but continues, taking the opportunity of the panic to step down and motion to the window. “Every time I look out to the island, I feel like they’ve been abandoned.”
And his father pauses, slowly pointing to the Isle himself. “The children of our sworn enemies? Living among us?” The doubt written in his face is almost painful, and clearly barely masking what his father really feels-- rage. Betrayal.
Backpedaling, Ben explains, “We’d start out with... a few, at first. Only the ones who need our help the most.” He can see his mother coming around to it, which is a major relief and there’s a small smile on his face from his relief. “I’ve already chosen them.”
But then his father looks offended as he turns to him more, “Have you?”
He feels his face fall a bit as his father’s tone. That barely-masked anger is growing. But his mother reaches out and grabs his father’s arm. “I gave you a second chance.” His father does back down when Belle turns to him and asks, “Who are their parents?”
Ease them into it. “Cruella de Vil,” he takes a moment to see their faces at each one. “Jafar, Evil Queen...”
His father cocks his head. He can tell Ben’s holding it back. He straightens his shoulders, stands up for himself... “And Maleficent.”
He hardly notices the small scream, too preoccupied by his father’s snapped, “MALEFICENT?! SHE IS THE WORST VILLAIN IN THE LAND--!”
“Dad, just hear me out here--” De-escalate, bring it down, backpedal, don’t let him get upset, don’t make him doubt--
“I won’t hear of it,” Adam interrupts. “They are guilty of unspeakable crimes--”
“Dad, their children are innocent!” Ben feels himself choking up, forces back the tears rising to his face at his father’s tone, his anger... “Don’t you think they deserve a shot at a normal life?!”
He barely hears the door closing. The servants had left the room, like they always do. No one sees how they are when those doors close. “Dad...”
The silence hangs as Adam looks between his wife and son, the silent pleas for him to remain calm, to try something new evident in both of their faces. He’s outnumbered and he can clearly see it. He slowly nods. “...I suppose the children are innocent.”
But he walks away without anything else. It’s Belle who walks over, straightens his coat and squeezes his hands with a small smile, a so-soft, “Well done,” before walking out with Adam.
Ben finds himself looking back out to the Isle again, wondering what would come of this.
Tumblr media
The proclamation is taken with... mixed reactions, he notes of the crowd. But he has some supporters. Audrey... she doesn’t say it, but he can tell she’s unsure of what to think and a little nervous. And he can say she has the right-- after all, he’d chosen the daughter of Maleficent, of everyone he could have, to be one of the first four to come. Chad follows their lead so he’s quiet about it. Doug backs him up completely, the way he always has.
Then the museum unveils a new exhibit, calling attention to the history of four particular villains, showing them at their true worst, forcing him and the citizens of Auradon to face that part of history again.
And he’s sick to his stomach when he sees the posters alone. He knows what four villains were chosen without having to go in, so he doesn’t going to a bench outside the museum and dropping into it. He’s dizzy. The heat, maybe?
Through the blur in his head, he just thinks about how the final vote on what goes into a new museum exhibit comes from the king. Adam had the final say on what was to be seen in there.
It couldn’t have been... could it?
Surely his father hadn’t...
Tumblr media
When he splashes into the Enchanted Lake, there’s frozen moment of time where Ben registers everything that’s happened. The enchantment ebbs away and he realizes exactly what’s been done to him.
He pulls to the surface, choosing to disappear behind some rocks and process it. And for a moment, he swears he can hear his father, yelling about the crimes committed by the parents, can hear how so sure of himself his father would be about this.
And Ben loses himself in thought for a minute, picking up a crystal from the water, turning it in his hands. Was his father right all along? Had it been a mistake? Maybe he should have stayed in line, been the king his father expected--
“BEN?!”
He hears Mal’s scream and looks up, startled from his thoughts, swimming back out and seeing her struggling in the water. He swims out quickly and scoops her up, helping her back up onto the ground, sitting her down gently.
He shakes his head and hair out, and she hits his arm. “YOU SCARED ME!”
But it’s different, somehow, her screaming at him, than it ever has been when his father yells. He’s just worried about her in all of this. “Y-you can’t swim?!”
“NO!”
He’s taken aback. “You live on an island!”
“Yeah, with a barrier around it, remember?!”
...she has a point. He watches her shaking off the water with a groan, cocking his head slightly, softening up. “And you still tried to save me.”
Because... she’d spelled him, hadn’t she? He wasn’t anything to her. She shouldn’t have even cared enough to bother. And yet... she did.
Maybe he was more on-track than his father gave him credit for.
She laughs sarcastically. “Yeah. And do you thank me? No! All I get is soaking wet!”
He jumps a bit, remembering he’s still holding the crystal. “And, uh... this... fancy rock?” As she snatches it, still looking highly offended, he decides to make up a reason to give it to her on the spot. “It’s yours. Make a wish and throw it back in the lake.” He offers her an awkward smile that he prays she doesn’t see through.
She throws it back in the lake right beside him and gets up. He climbs up with her and follows after her, pulling his jacket around her shoulders to help warm her up and dry her off a bit.
When she sits down at their picnic again, he dries his face and hair a bit before dropping down his towel and sitting with her, playing softly with her hair, looking at her, trying to look into her eyes a bit. Trying to see what’s really going on there, not sure if he can discern any of it.
She’s upset, but... her anger isn’t a familiar one, not to him. There’s something else to it, something sweeter, and he wonders...
“Uh, Mal?” He summons all his courage, somehow feeling stranger about this than he ever did about telling his father anything. He was terrified, but... not in a bad way. Not this time. “I told you that I loved you...” He holds her gaze softly for a moment, “But what about you?” Spit it out. “Do you love me?”
And she doesn’t break eye contact, not completely, as she holds his gaze for a long minute. And he knows. Even as she looks down, looks away and answers with that shrug, “I don’t know what love feels like.”
So he gently reaches out, resting a finger softly under her chin, rubbing her cheek with his thumb as he turns her back to him. “Maybe I can teach you.”
And he’s never felt more certain of anything until this, this moment, no matter what his father has to say.
Tumblr media
When the fight breaks out, Ben freezes. So much yelling, so much is happening all at once and-- and then his father says it.
“I knew something like this would happen,” Adam’s saying, his disappointment, his disapproval painfully evident.
“Dad, this isn’t their fault!”
“No, son. It’s yours,” his father answers, pulling Belle along away from the courtyard.
“Mom,” Ben says, but she leaves with him, and Ben’s crushed by his doubts again. Nobody in Auradon wanted the four of them here, nobody saw them the way he did anymore.
Even Doug backed down from supporting them. And... he doesn’t blame the other. He’s known Doug all their lives, knows how painful it’s been for him to not be accepted by the others. What hurts him is Chad, and Audrey. The bond they’d had as kids was long severed.
He didn’t know if it could be fixed, or if he wanted it to be fixed.
He tries his best to talk to them, but they don’t want to hear it from him, and he knows it. All his fault.
Always all his fault.
Tumblr media
It’s not Mal who grabs the wand at his coronation.
It’s all he can think about in the moment, with everything happening. It’s not Mal, it’s Jane, and he doesn’t even know what’s going through her head but it’s not Mal--
Mal wrestles it away from Jane, though... and freezes. He looks at her and he can read the look on her face. He gets between her and his parents. “Mal... give me the wand.”
“Stand back,” she says, but he can tell how hard she’s trying to convince herself of what she’s saying.
He pays attention to nothing else, not hearing the doors open or seeing the other three running to join her. “It’s okay--”
“Ben, I said stand back!” She interrupts him.
Audrey says something. He barely even registers who’s speaking. His attention is focused entirely on Mal. Carlos and Jay speak, too, but he doesn’t acknowledge them either.
“You really wanna do this?” He keeps himself set, braces himself against his own fear, trusting his instincts. She doesn’t sound sold on it and he knows it.
“WE HAVE NO CHOICE, BEN,” Mal answers, and there it is. He knew it. She didn’t say yes. She didn’t answer his question directly. That was his in. He was right. He’d been right all along. “Our parents--”
“Your parents made their choice,” he interrupts, standing up for her, for what he knows is there in her, shaking his head and lowering his arms, straightening his shoulders. “Now you make yours.”
He holds her gaze, in spite of her obvious fears, in spite of everything in the room. Watches her glance around them, behind him. She barely answers him, but while the rest of the coronation doesn’t hear it... he does. And he relaxes at the words, “I think I wanna be good.”
“You are good,” he meets, maybe the wrong move.
“How do you know that?!”
“Because...” And his father’s not going to like this answer but he does not care, “Because I’m listening to my heart.”
His undivided attention stays on Mal, watching her breathe, calm down. “I wanna listen to my heart, too.” She meets his eyes again and he smiles, taking deep breaths himself, watching her. She lowers the wand as she turns back to her friends and addresses them instead. He looks up when she says, “I wanna go to school... and be with Ben.”
His heart freezes for a moment, as she turns back to him, holding up her hand with his ring on her finger still and continues, “Because Ben makes me really happy.”
He manages to breathe, watching her turn back to her friends again, but smiling to himself.
He’d been right. He knew it, deep down, in spite of what his father had put him through. And... somehow, he gets the feeling Adam sees it too.
Maybe he had a lot to learn, but maybe, just maybe, Adam could figure it out.
The one thing Ben knew was... Mal made him less afraid to stand up to his father.
He had to trust that.

Could you write a jaylos fic where like some people at auradon prep are thinking jay and Carlos might be more than friends because of how they act with each other? Loved your last jaylos fic!
ahhh omg thank you!!!
always taking fic prompts
1. Evie
It was nothing out of the ordinary, really. Nothing popped out at her, no one popped out and pointed anything out to her. It was just casual observation of an, admittedly, small thing.
The four of them have a movie night every other week - Evie, Mal, Carlos, and Jay. Sometimes it’s in Evie and Mal’s dorm, other times it’s Carlos and Jay’s. They see each other throughout the week anyway, but regardless, it’s an established tradition among the four VKs.
It’s Mal’s turn to pick a movie, and she’s selected a documentary on… true crime maybe? Evie isn’t sure. She hasn’t really been paying attention. It’s around the end of the movie (maybe a foreign film?) that she even notices.
Jay and Carlos are sitting… awfully close.
It’s not unusual for the VKs to share some physical affection from time to time. Evie will rest her head on Jay’s shoulder, Mal will run her hand through Carlos’s hair, Jay will hold Mal’s hand while walking down the street. (Sometimes, Evie will hold Mal’s hand too - and it feels like electricity popping through her fingertips. It’s something to examine another time.)
But they’ve been sitting like that the whole movie. Before Evie and Mal got there, even. And it’s in a position that… Evie finds curious.
As the credits roll and Mal gets up to go get the DVD, Evie examines the boys, who both look tired but are talking and laughing. Simply to sate her curiosity, Evie asks, “Jay, will you do me a favor?”
The boys break mid-conversation and look at her, both still smiling. “Yeah?” Jay asks.
“Could I possibly borrow your math homework? I, uh, forgot mine in my locker and need to copy the problems.”
Jay shrugs and stands, unwinding his arm from behind Carlos’s back and going to his bed to get his homework.
… Huh.
After Jay returns and everyone says their goodbyes, Mal and Evie wander into the hallway. As they walk in silence, Evie ponders what to do with this new information. “Hey, Mal?”
“Yeah?”
Evie frowns. “Do you think something’s up with Jay and Carlos?”
Mal hums thoughtfully for a moment. “No clue,” she decides. The rest of the walk is spent in silence.
2. Ben
Ben may not be the most observant captain in the world. But if you give him enough pieces, he’ll learn to put together the jigsaw puzzle.
Which is exactly the case with Jay and Carlos.
At first he was a little confused as to why Jay would constantly volunteer to privately help Carlos with tourney. Or as to why Carlos would tutor Jay in math. They don’t have to do everything together, surely?
Even with all of Jay’s extra practicing, though, there are days Carlos doesn’t do the best on the field. Today, particularly, seems to suck. Coach calls him out of the lineup after almost five minutes of scrimmage, and Carlos nearly faints with relief. Ben can see his legs shaking from across almost the entire field, and wonders briefly if he should go check on him.
But then, in only a few seconds, Jay is there, kneeling down to Carlos’s sitting height and talking to him. After a minute or two, Jay reaches out and wraps his arms around Carlos, who immediately reciprocates.
They hug for at least ten minutes, or so it seems to Ben. When Jay finally untangles himself, he runs over to the forward’s starting positions next to Ben. Ben smiles at him. “You’re a really good bro,” he says.
Jay looks at him, startled and confused. “Excuse me?” he asks.
“You know, for Carlos,” he explains. “You’re a great friend.”
There’s a long pause. Then, slowly, Jay raises his eyebrows. “Right,” he says, and then flicks his helmet back on.
Oh. Yeah. Oblivious as he might seem, eventually Ben will begin to get the big picture.
3. Fairy Godmother
Teaching Villain Kids isn’t… always easy. They’re a lot like other kids, except they’re less bored by you and more confused by you. Which is fine, sometimes. She’d rather have “why are you teaching this way” than “why are you teaching,” hands down.
But sometimes she doesn’t know what to do with Villain Kids. Like when one has a panic attack in the middle of her class.
Halfway through the lesson on the history of Auradon, Jay looks like he’s about to puke all over Chad Charming, and he gets up and runs from the room. The entire class stops and looks after him, confused and alarmed. “Um,” she says. “Well, that was odd.” She glances around the room and lands on a face she trusts to send out of the classroom. “Ben, will you please -”
“No!”
They all turn their heads. Carlos De Vil is half-standing out of his chair already. He looks at her with big, pleading eyes. “Please? Please let me go instead?”
She looks around the room, and everyone is staring at Carlos with wide eyes and curious expressions. But Carlos is only looking at her, his heart completely on his sleeve. “Um, yes,” she says, blinking. “You may.”
Carlos says ‘thank you’ quietly, and then slips from his chair and into the hallway after Jay in the blink of an eye.
The lesson continues on as normally as it possibly could, and about twelve minutes later, the boys enter quietly through the back door. Carlos has his arm around Jay’s waist as he guides him back to their shared desk.
After class, they come speak to her about Jay’s predicament. It’s the first time she’s ever had to plainly explain to someone what ‘dyslexia’ meant, as if they’d never heard the term before. And judging by the look on Jay’s face, he never has.
4. Jane
“So the annual cotillion is coming up,” she says conversationally. But the topic is anything but conversational.
Almost a year ago, she and her then-boyfriend were at the cotillion. Now, they’ve broken up and are trying to be friends and she has no date to the cotillion. So, everything is about 70% worse.
Carlos hums, and continues to type away on his phone. She has no idea who he’s texting half the time, but he’s driven to keep the conversation going with them, at least. He puts the phone down and smiles up at her, continues to eat the salad he ordered for lunch today. “I was just thinking,” she begins. Then the phone buzzes.
“Sorry,” he murmurs, but picks it up and answers it anyway. He puts it back down and looks at her again, and she’s barely opened her mouth to continue her sentence before it buzzes again. “Sorry! I’m sorry, I’ll put it on silent.”
So he picks it up and silences his phone, while taking a moment to answer the texts anyway, and then puts it down on the table and looks up at her. “Okay, what were you saying?”
“I was saying that the cotillion is coming up, and if you don’t…” She trails off, staring at his phone, which keeps unabashedly blinking with new messages. Each new one is from Jay, lighting the screen up every few seconds. Huh. She sighs. “You know what, never mind.”
Carlos looks up from his phone, frowning. “Jane, tell me! I really want to know.”
She shakes her head, smiling. “No, it’s totally fine. It’s not that important. Tell me how you’ve been.”
He smiles gingerly and goes about telling her about his week. Well, that’s that, she supposes. Maybe she’ll ask Lonnie to the cotillion…
5. Mal
Mal makes it her business to keep out of other people’s business. You don’t want her to know something? That’s fine. You want her to know something? That’s fine too. You want her to pretend something never existed and never talk about it again? Sounds like her specialty.
But nothing could prepare her for the amount of nosy people telling her about the business of Carlos and Jay.
It starts with Evie. Then it’s Ben. And now Jane, who said even her mother has said something about it? This is far too much.
So she investigates. It is so not her style to go snooping into other people’s lives. But everyone’s got her so curious, she’s got to know. So she does what any teenager in her position would do: sets up a game of truth or dare.
She invites the other three of the rotten four, Ben, Jane, Lonnie, Chad, and Doug. They all hang out, aimlessly talking about everything and nothing, and then she subtly introduces the idea of truth or dare. As any group would do, they immediately take a liking to the idea and begin to play.
The game goes smoothly for a while. Mal gets dared to change Ben’s hair (she thinks it looks better spiky anyway), Evie gets asked when her first kiss was, Lonnie has to text the first person in her contact list the entire Auradon Prep Alma Mater.
And then, finally, it’s Mal’s turn.
She’s had a lot of time to think about this. She could go after Jay, who’s more likely to do anything on a dare. Or she could go after Carlos, who is objectively the more honest and open of the two. She considers carefully and then turns to her prey. “Carlos,” she says.
Carlos grins. “I’ll take dare,” he says. Hm. Interesting.
She feels her smile growing wicked as she says, “I dare you to kiss the prettiest person in the room on the lips.” Carlos’s eyes widen, but he smiles a little all the same.
There’s a vague grumble of dissent among the players. Apparently, no one wants to know that they aren’t the prettiest person in the room. Hey, Mal wouldn’t care. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. “I have an idea,” Doug says. Stupid, diplomatic Doug. “Why don’t we all close our eyes. And then if we’re not picked, we won’t know who was picked?”
There’s a vague grumble of agreement. Carlos shrugs. “Okay,” he says. “Eyes closed.”
Mal sighs dramatically and closes her eyes. She sits quietly and listens for footsteps to indicate Carlos moving, but no. All she gets is silence.
Eventually, Carlos says, “Okay, open.”
Everyone opens their eyes and looks around at each other. Looks like they’ll never know. Except…
Except that Carlos and Jay are sitting right next to each other. They wouldn’t even need to move to kiss. How convenient.
Luckily, they’re the first to leave. They say goodnight and as soon as the door shuts behind them, Mal turns to the group. “There is definitely something going on with those two,” she says. Everyone nods in agreement.
+ 1. Carlos
It’s a few days before the annual cotillion. Carlos is seated across from two of his best friends, he has peanut butter and jelly for lunch, and Dude is sitting at his feet in the shade. What a great day.
Mal and Evie are talking about… something. He should probably focus a little more, because he’s gotten in trouble for not listening before. He snaps back to attention.
“… theme this year is atrocious anyway.” They turn to Carlos, almost in unison, and smile. “What about you, Carlos?” Evie asks. “Are you going to the cotillion?”
He looks between them, a little confused, mostly because they look a little bit like the twins from the shining. “Uh… yeah,” he says.
Mal tilts her head. “Oh, really?” she asks. “Anyone special?”
He frowns and considers the answer to this. “I mean, Jay’s special to me, but I don’t know about anyone else,” he says.
There’s a lengthy pause where they both just stare at him and he bites into his PB&J. “You’re… going with Jay?” Mal asks eventually.
“Like, going going? Going together?” Evie presses.
Carlos chews on his sandwich. “Yeah,” he says, swallowing. “I mean, he hasn’t officially asked me, but I assume we’re going together after so long.”
The girls look at each other, looking befuddled. Carlos is befuddled as to their befuddlement. “Wait, you guys are dating?” Evie asks. “For how long?”
He quickly does the math in his head. “Seven months?”
They both nearly fall out of their chairs.
“Seven months?!” Mal yelps. “Why didn’t you tell us?”
Carlos snorts and says, “You never asked.” They both stare at him, looking angry and annoyed. “Besides, we thought you knew. You’ve almost walked in on us making out about a million times. Plus, we hold hands and hug and text… constantly.”
Mal throws up her hands. “We all do that!”
“It’s different,” Carlos says, simply because it is different. Sometimes, texting or talking to Mal and Evie and Jane feels like an obligation. With Jay, it feels like a constant.
He finishes up his sandwich in one last bite and grins at them. “Lovely chatting with you ladies,” he says. “Now, if you excuse me, I’m going to go find my boyfriend.” With that, he stands and walks away, Dude hot on his heels.
carlosDid you know that the girls didn’t know we were dating?
