X-Files OctoberFicFest Day 28: Ship
This year, I'm using the October 2022 prompts from @artpromptcal.
There's the USS Allegiance, the submarine where Mulder nearly died at the hands of the alien bounty hunter. Surely it's at the bottom of the ocean now, a tomb for those who succumbed to the retrovirus that nearly took Mulder. Scully hopes it's never found - let them rest in peace on the ocean floor.
There's the ghost ship where the Navy sailors turned to salt. Neither one of them enjoyed that outing in particular. The North Atlantic isn't most people's choice of a vacation spot, and that's before the threat of rapid aging and imminent death. Scully hasn't eaten sardines since.
There's the Piper Maru, with its own deadly cargo. A salvage ship, salvaged.
There's the boat from Heuvelmans Lake, scuttled by Big Blue or some underwater obstacle: they're still debating to this day. Mulder insists on a monster. Scully rolls her eyes and sighs for her devoured dog. They both remember their conversation in the dark, perched on a rock barely big enough for the two of them, waiting for death or the morning.
There's the Queen Anne, unmoored in time. Allegedly, Scully says, but she remembers the way he looked up at her from his hospital bed. Other lives, he said. You saved the world, he said. I love you, he said. She remembers how she felt walking the wood-paneled passageways, the sense of stepping into another era.
There's the ship McMahon led them to. Its passengers weren't destined to see the light of day.
There's the Chimera, where Jackson's girlfriends stabbed each other. That's Scully's favorite ship: nobody died there, and it led her to her son.
And of course, there are the alien ships: on the beach in Côte d'Ivoire, in the Oregon woods, floating over head, smoking ruins plowed into the earth. Miracle; mystery; menace.

Exactly 100 years ago, President Warren Gamaliel Harding escaped the sweltering summer weather and increasingly dark political climate of Washington, D.C. to embark upon a lengthy cross-country trip through parts of the American West still relatively unaccustomed to frequent visits by the nation’s Chief Executive. Billed as a “Voyage of Understanding”, Harding’s trip was seen as a prelude to his potential campaign for re-election the following year, and an opportunity to put some literal and figurative distance between the President and the rumors of rampant corruption swirling around some of Harding’s friends and closest aides from Ohio, as well as several Cabinet members — rumors eventually proven to be true, resulting in indictments, convictions, prison sentences, and even suicides. As President Harding prepared for his Western tour, he could feel the heat as the scandals plaguing his Administration began to reach a boiling point. Speaking privately to the famous journalist and editor William Allen White, Harding said of the Presidency, “My God, this is a hell of a job! I have no trouble with my enemies…But my damn friends, they’re the ones that keep me walking the floor nights.”
Harding’s planned 15,000-mile Voyage of Understanding began on June 20, 1923. Traveling aboard the private Pullman railroad car Superb, the 57-year-old President left Washington, D.C. accompanied by First Lady Florence Harding, Speaker of the House of Representatives Frederick H. Gillett, new Interior Secretary Hubert Work, and a large retinue of aides, friends and their families, doctors, Secret Service agents, and members of the press. Work had become Secretary of the Interior a few months earlier when the previous Secretary, Albert B. Fall, became the “fall guy” for the Teapot Dome scandal. For his role in the scandal, Fall was later convicted of accepting bribes — the first former Cabinet member in American history to serve time in prison for crimes committed while in office. At later points along the journey, Harding’s party was also joined by Secretary of Agriculture Henry C. Wallace (father of future Vice President Henry A. Wallace) and Secretary of Commerce (and future President) Herbert Hoover.
Tumblr media
The last week of June 1923 was spent traveling through the Mountain West — Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Montana, and Yellowstone National Park. The beginning of July saw the Presidential party in the Northwest and celebrating Independence Day in Portland, Oregon before boarding the USS Henderson in Tacoma, Washington on July 5, 1923 to sail to Alaska. One of the expected highlights of the Voyage of Understanding was the northernmost  leg of the trip, as Harding became the first incumbent President of the United States to visit Alaska and Canada. The Territory of Alaska had been purchased for the United States by Secretary of State William Seward in 1867 when Warren G. Harding was two years old, and at the time of Harding’s visit, Alaska was still 35 years from being admitted to the Union as the 49th state. But the President spent nearly the entire month of July traveling through the state, mixing public appearances with private recreation and sightseeing. On July 15, 1923, Harding hammered a golden spike in Nenana, Alaska to officially complete the Alaska Railroad. And ten days later, the President crossed into Canada, fishing on the Campbell River in British Columbia on July 25th and then making an official visit the following day in Vancouver, where he was greeted by one of the largest crowds of his voyage — estimated at over 40,000 people — and where he also squeezed in a round of golf at the exclusive Shaughnessy Golf Club.
Tumblr media
The President returned to American soil on July 27th, arriving in Seattle and making several speeches in a busy six-hour period — first to Camp Fire Girls at Volunteer Park, then to nearly 30,000 Boy Scouts at Woodland Park, and finishing the day addressing over 30,000 people at what is now Husky Stadium at the University of Washington where he predicted statehood for Alaska, where he had spent most of the month. After making a brief appearance that evening at the Seattle Press Club, Harding boarded his train that night to travel to Portland, Oregon.
Tumblr media
But something was not right. The President seemed to be exhausted, perhaps from the grueling trip through geography much wilder than Harding’s native Ohio or swampy Washington, D.C. Despite his exciting journey through Alaska and the energetic welcome provided by the Canadian people, Harding was clearly wiped out by the time he reached British Columbia. The President did head to the country club while in Vancouver, but he was so tired that after six holes of golf his foursome skipped directly to the eighteenth hole, seemingly completing the round without tipping off the press that Harding couldn’t play the entire course.
From the White House, nine days before embarking upon his Voyage of Understanding, Harding wrote a quick note to Solicitor General James M. Beck who had wished the President a safe journey on his upcoming trip. Thanking Beck, Harding wrote, “I shall try to remember not to overdo (it) in crossing the continent.” And, on June 14, 1923, six days before leaving, President Harding wrote a short letter to a young girl from Hartford, Connecticut named Vivian Little, who had recently sent the President a four-leaf clover as a good luck charm. “Thank you so much for the four-leaf clover which you were so good as to press and send to me,” the President wrote. “I hope it will bring me good luck and that it will bring you still more of the same.”
Tumblr media
However, any luck that President Warren G. Harding still had seemed to be running out. Ill and exhausted after leaving Vancouver, Harding tried to rest aboard the USS Henderson as it sailed to Seattle in the early morning hours of July 27. At some point around 3 AM, Harding and the other passengers aboard the Henderson were jolted awake as the ship crashed into the USS Zeilin, an American destroyer accompanying the Presidential party while they traveled through the foggy Puget Sound. This was not the first mishap of the Voyage of Understanding. While traveling through Colorado early in the trip, three people from the President’s party had been killed in a car accident. And now, after a few weeks in Alaska where Harding was able to at least temporarily forget about his Administration’s many troubles, the President was not only sick and tired but two of his Navy’s ships had just smashed into each other almost as soon as he had returned to the continental United States. While the USS Zeilin was badly damaged in the collision, the USS Henderson was not and there were apparently no major injuries on either vessel. But when the President’s valet, Major Arthur Brooks, came to Harding’s stateroom aboard the Henderson to inform him that the captain was calling for all hands on deck, he found the depressed President lying on his bed with his face buried in his hands. “I hope the boat sinks,” President Harding quietly muttered.
It was just hours later that Harding made his whirlwind tour through Seattle, putting on a brave face at his public appearances, but clearly not feeling well. While he was never considered a brilliant orator like Abraham Lincoln, Benjamin Harrison, or his immediate predecessor, Woodrow Wilson, Harding was a strong speaker and excellent communicator who had a unique ability to connect with audiences, but he was obviously — and unusually — halting and confused while speaking in Seattle on July 27th. As he boarded his train at Seattle’s King Street Station that night, Harding was examined by his doctor and by Interior Secretary Hubert Work, who had once been a physician, and they decided to cancel the next several days of planned activities. Instead of stopping in Portland and then visiting Yosemite National Park, the Presidential party was ordered to proceed directly to San Francisco where Harding could rest before giving a speech on the radio planned for July 31st which was expected to be heard by over 5 million people.
Despite the four-leaf clover that had been sent to him by Vivian Little before his Voyage of Understanding, Warren Gamaliel Harding’s luck seemed to be running out. And, as his train sped through Oregon en route to San Francisco’s Palace Hotel on July 28, 1923, President Harding was also running out of time.

Thing I Can Make Out On The White Board:
1) The CRM is clearly planning to make a move on Portland. We know this because the map the promo shows, the top left says Portland and Post Operation, that latitude and longitude for Portland, Oregon are on the board. (Also, the World Beyond spinoff, which I have not watched)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2) I think the π symbol could be a reference to pizza or an implication that the story is now coming full circle.
3) RPED and marine - marine is a military branch and I think RPED can either stand for Respiratory Protective Escape Device or Rapid Prototyping Experimentation Demonstration. We know that the CRM has made devices to attack people with chlorine gas, we also know that they are performing experiments.
Tumblr media
4) Radio G7 Span and East of River - G7 is the Group of 7 that includes Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, UK, and the US. It is a government thing. I think this shows the widespread reach of the CRM. When I looked up East of River, it brought up Washington DC, as East of the River is a part of DC called the East End.
Tumblr media
5) Food Lines/Inventory Seeds RW 32.62527 - I can't put a whole lot of meaning to this beyond possibly trying to attack Portland's food supply, unless seeds are referring to their bomb capsules. Both the Seed stand and the seed mention made me think back to the season 3x1 Seed but that can just be a coincidence.
Tumblr media
6) Code 3362, FL/only - I haven't been able to find what code 3362 means, but I think FL means food lines OR front lines.
Tumblr media
7) Engage -> Assess -> Execute -> Reclamation -> PPP exception - I think this is just how they keep files on communities and document them. I am uncertain exactly what the PPP exception is, although I have made 2 posts on it. I think it means Power Projection Platforms in regards to what the CRM views as assets (A's who can be reformed the the CRMs benefit, and control military forces) or medically it refers to glycolysis and the Pentose Phosphate Pathway and how the body responds to methanol (metabolic acidosis).
Tumblr media
8) Echelon Exception - we are aware that there is something called the Echelon Briefing. We know that historically Echelon was a government surveillance program (which is similar to how the CRM knows about all these communities). We also know that Echelon literally means rung of a ladder or level.
Tumblr media
9) Intel / Rules / Contact Park - I cannot read anything that it says in between the section titles. I do know there was a character on Fear the Walking Dead: Dead on the Water (or something along those lines) named Park. That show was about the USS Pennsylvania (I think) going against its orders to fire up on Chicago.
Tumblr media
10) Refinery C2H5OH1 - The CRM is manufacturing ethanol. We know ethanol to be alcohol, the most concentrated form being moonshine. We know that if not made properly, it becomes methanol which is poisonous to the body because our body turns it into formaldehyde. I think this is why Beth says "bad moonshine can make you go blind" and I also think this is why Alone takes place in a funeral home. (I also think Alone took place in a funeral home to emphasize the fact that Beth did not get a funeral). I think this is Pharmakon, poison and cure coming full circle. Even in the episode Still, Peach Schnapps was a poison and Moonshine was the cure. (Daryl said Peach Schnapps is not good and Moonshine is a real first drink).
Tumblr media
This is just info, I can't really make the best sense of it all as I have no watched any of the spinoffs and haven't seen past Carl's death in the show. (My fiance and I are only on 5x7 of our rewatch)

PR6 PREDICTIONS - Eagle Union
This time around the burgerboats have plenty of choices for at least 1 PR, maybe even a DR! and I am here to tell you all about them.
Like always: Just like last post: Do not treat any of the following choices as guaranteed. I would not bet money on any of these specific ones getting added as part of PR6 this year, it's just the ships I see as Very LikelyTM.
Let's start with the DRs. There are 2 main candidates and both are effectively the same thing.
Tumblr media
USS Delaware
Tumblr media
USS Kearsarge
Both are hybrid battleships. We only got 4 BBVs in Azur Lane and they all suck (even if waifu>meta) and are from Sakura. These 2 different hybrid battleships would be, well, different.
Delaware would have access to a squadron of 5 dive bombers that drop 10 bombs (2 per bomber), fast and tanky planes. Her upgraded ones are AD-1 Skyriders, which is a plane that exsisted I guess (I'm not an aviation nerd). Kearsarge, however, has access to attack aircraft; her only option being a squadron of 5 F8F Bearcat.
This means both ships would be able to equip any planes whatsoever (well, dive bombers or fighters, but any of those), unlike the existing BBVs.
Delaware is literally an Iowa with a runway strapped on top.
In terms of gunplay, Kearsarge is an absolute monster - her 12 406mm guns hit like trucks but are delivered in 3-5 shipping days (as in, they're slow). Delaware is ok, her shells are a bit faster because they have longer barrels.
Any of them could be the DR of the Eagle Union.
Tumblr media
USS Vallejo
A preliminary design of the Worcester-class light cruisers, she would undoubtedly be a PR. She's mediocre at best - Seattle is better in a lot of regards, but she has a high rate of fire and very good AA. She's an option but honestly, I don't think we'll get her.
Tumblr media
USS Tulsa
I can't find info on her existence IRL, so I assume she's a made-up Wargaming ship, meaning she counts for PR6.
Tulsa is a half-sister of the Oregon City-class, meaning she'd be a half-sister of Northampton II in AL (same way Ägir and Brünhilde or Monarch and the KGV-class can be considered half-sisters if you squint).
She fires incredibly, incredibly fast. Her reload rate is 5.8 seconds, which, even if she only has 6 guns, is scary because those are Des Moines guns. Des Moines is a famously great heavy cruiser in WoWs, having a faster-firing variant one tier lower is intimidating.
She would be PR and honestly, I see her addition far more likely than Vallejo. Besides, Tulsa is a cool name.
Tumblr media
USS Congress
A preliminary design of the Alaska-class.
Yes. A large cruiser.
I see Congress being the Georgia of USN vanguard ships. She would act as a herald of what's to come for when we inevitable get Alaska (and possibly Guam as well); same way Georgia acted as a tease for the Iowa-class (of whom we have only gotten NJ. PLEASE ADD MORE IOWAS. I DARE YOU). In terms of gameplay she's extremely fragile and weak in the wrong hands, but can be a useful asset. She has good AA, radar, hydroacoustic search, and only 7 305mm guns. But those are 7 very hard hitting 305mm guns, which can devastate anything that's a lower tier.
Tumblr media
USS Constellation
The capital ships don't stop coming.
Constellation is a what-if: "what if Lexington and Saratoga never underwent aircraft carrier conversions?"
The answer is a funny little battlecruiser. Well, "little". This shit has more free board than [insert hilarous comparison].
However, despite her obvious weakness of having a lot of flat armor on her sides, she's somewhat fast and has 8 406mm guns. That hit like trucks. Like all American 406mm guns (except you, Colorado. You suck.) And radar. And one of the best AAs of all battleships. And if you thought those were all her gimmicks, she also has a spotter plane, meaning she can fire at a ludicrous range.
Oh.
And torpedoes.
This bitch has torpedoes.
Tumblr media
USS Minnesota
She's a fat, slow, slumbering, ugly, hideous battleship. A Tillman design, ever wonder why the Colorados were the last Tillman design? yeah, because they suck.
Minnesota is an enlarged Colorado in the most literal sense. She has 40 seconds of reload. You can genuinely prepare coffee from scratch while you wait for her guns to reload. And her guns are disappointingly innacurate at times.
But when they hit.
Oh god. They hit.
Tumblr media
USS Nebraska.
If we get neither Kearsarge nor Delaware, there's always Nebraska.
She would be PR. She's a North Carolina that can launch Helldivers.
Tumblr media
USS Annapolis
The hail mary.
She's a super-super Des Moines. She's the heavy cruiser to end all heavy cruisers. If we get her, she would be a DR for sure, and would outdamage some of the already top-tier battleships in Azur Lane. It's impossible that we get her, but it would be incredibly funny.

"USS Oregon
The mast and figurehead shield from the Indiana-class battleship 'USS Oregon' in Tom McCall Waterfront Park, Portland, Oregon. On 4 July 1976, a time capsule was sealed in the base of the memorial. The time capsule is scheduled to be opened 5 July 2076.
The Oregon is famed for making the run from San Francisco to Florida via the Straits of Magellan in just 66 days during the American-Spanish war (19th March – 24th May, 1898)."
