Umbrellas and automobiles are different. Not just because of size, function, and cost. But for a reason we seldom stop to consider. A person can use an umbrella without buying another product. An automobile, by contrast, is useless without fuel, oil, repair services, spare parts, not to mention streets and roads. The humble umbrella, therefore, is a rugged individual, so to speak, delivering value to its user irrespective of any other product. The mighty auto, by contrast, is a team player completely dependent on other products. So is a razor blade, a tape recorder, a refrigerator, and thousands of other products that work only when combined with others. The television set would stare blankly into the living room if someone somewhere were not transmitting images to it. Even the lowly closet hanger presupposes a rack or bar to hang it on. Each of these is part of a product system. It is precisely their systemic nature that is their main source of economic value. And just as "team players" must play by certain agreed-on rules, systemic products need standards to work. A three-pronged electrical plug doesn't help much if all the wall sockets have only two slots. This distinction between stand-alone and systemic products throws revealing light on an issue that is widening today's information wars all around the world. The French call it la guerre des normes—“the war over standards." Battles over standards are raging in industries as diverse as medical technology, industrial pressure vessels, and cameras.

the old world is dying and the new world struggles to be born. now is the time of monsters
I'm beginning to think that some massive changes have taken place not just to the world around us, but to us. How we think about people around us, how we speak, how we love, how we form thoughts, where those thoughts come from.
As much as I disagree with (at least, the surface interpretation of) Julian Jaynes' ideas about the "bicameral mind" I have to say that what I presently suspect is happening to the human mind, emotions, and cognition in the 21st century, is producing a very very different kind of character than the 20th Century Person. Possibly on the level which he believed to be the case with the shift away from his proposed Bicameral Mind.
In a way, we have a new Bicameral Mind: our native thoughts, and the distributed crowd-sourced digital brain that we have spent most of our time in interaction with since the 2010s.
Our world changed drastically and we are changing with it.
This is just my uninformed 2c, my feelings, I'm not like. A Credentialed Expert (tm) of any kind I think that in many cases, there is a lot of artistic and intellectual work of prior to the 21st century that will be illegible to a lot of 21st Century People because the cultural context will be so drastically different and they will have no way to reach across that gap.
I genuinely believe many social concepts we grew up taking for granted - the idea of a separate self proven against the outside world, away from one's parents (in the West, this may actually be a relic of a period of time encompassing the Age of Sail and Industrial Revolution); in a community very different from oneself...
Even more, I begin to think that how *romantic love* was constructed in the 20th century, is very different now to the degree that moderns simply cannot relate to older portrayals of romance.
20th Century People can relate to the minds and feelings of 19th Century People better than 21st Century People can relate to a large cohort of 20th Century People.
It is easier for a Gen Xr to insert themselves into the mindset of a dead person living during the Great Depression than it is for a lot of Zoomers and Alphas to relate to a Gen Xr's teen years.

Ives/Toffler manifesto
Toffler watches over him and prays for him (and is SO PSYCHED to do so! Praying! His main Thing!) when he first arrives.
Toffler helps him get dressed when he dramatically jumps out of bed naked (and I could be mistaken but I feel like Toffler makes a shocked noise when he uh reveals himself.)
Toffler's so excited that Ives is awake that he's reduced to skidding up to Hart and Boyd and just sort of happily jumping in place to announce the news.
On the hike to the cave, while everyone shares a tent Ives suggests a rhyme for Toffler's hymn that he's working on and Toffler is just elated about it and Ives smiles slightly.
Ives can't resist the tantalizing smell of his blood after he gets injured thus the "HE WAS LICKING MEEEE" scene.
And then of course the creepy cannibalistic homoeroticism of Ives chasing him through the woods and eating him! This is the homoerotic cannibalism movie after all!

Do you have any Ravenous (1999) headcanons? 👀
YES I HAVE A FEW!!! Honestly I’m more the type of person who clings to all the actual facts of the characters but let’s see…
1. I think Boyd is more drawn to the consumption of human blood than actual human flesh. He was created by blood and only really seems to slip in his resolve to not become a cannibal when he is confronted with fresh blood. Not to say he’s a vampire but I could definitely see him being more partial to raw flesh like his fantasy with murdering Cleaves. (I did get this idea from a fanfic tho so you can’t give me credit for it but ITS SO SMART!!!)
2. Toffler is smart and calculated. He may have a speech impediment and have a good moral code but that makes him the target of a lot of ableism. When people make demeaning comments about him you can tell in his face he knows he’s being ridiculed but doesn’t fight back probably because in the past it never helped. He’s come to terms with people underestimating and looking down on him so he puts his dedication and resolve into his faith.
3. This comes from an Au I’m making rather than actual fact but I like to headcanon Reich as having albinism. I can see him putting on special sunscreen to protect his sensitive skin and having to wear strong reading glasses he might be a little insecure about due to his sensitive/diminished eyesight. (Also having to wear sunglasses whenever outside especially in the sun) but despite the challenges he faces he is STRONG!! Pushes himself to the limits in a way to maybe prove himself that he can do anything and everything he puts his mind to!
4. Cleaves and George are obviously a couple 🤨…. I do like Reich and Toffler too I think it’s cute.
5. MARTHA IS A GIRLBOSS LESBIAN!!! Every time I see the scene where cleaves and her go off for supplies and she makes her sly little joke of “no women” I can’t help but think she’s giggling to herself knowing she’s gonna woo some lady anyways. Also Martha deserves the best so why shouldn’t she get a girlfriend that treats her right after all this nonsense.
6. I think if Boyd actually gave in to Ives and the mystical cannibal ways he would absolutely NOT be shoved around be Ives anymore. Ives Will stay a devious little shit but Boyd is an immovable object to an unstoppable force. I think Boyd would keep Ives in line and be his under emotive autistic boyfriend to his ADHD high energy lover. (Coughs coughs ives is a power bottom/ Boyd is a gentle ish… top… idk I think Boyd gets a little revenge in the form of consensual intimacy cuz of his boyfriends crazy shenanigans in the beginning of their ‘relationship’)
OKAY… sorry that was long thats all I can think of for now. God I love these scrunklies<3

I finally watched Ravenous. Absolutely nothing about the way you’ve been posting about it prepared me for that. The fuckin upbeat ‘yeehaw’ banjos while the little god boy was running terrified through the woods being chased by Robert Carlyle doing THAT with his hands and his blonde soldier boyfriend coming after them, the goddamn opening quote text which had me laughing my ass off, the sheer amount of homoeroticism (which I thought was just fun stuff being played around with on Tumblr omg) — im obsessed with this film. You’ve done this to me.
I went into that film expecting a psychological horror film about men stuck in a cave (a la The Lighthouse) and instead I got The Lost Boys but they’re all cannibals.
YES, WE GOT ANOTHER ONE, BOYS.
oh, ravenous is a movie that you just have to experience, i'm so happy you gave it a chance. those opening quotes had me going 'OH' the first time i watched it, like i just knew i was in for an unforgettable ride. this movie is a delight (which is a natural thing to say about a cannibal western horror-comedy amalgamation, of course).
and yeah, we love babygirlifying cannibals here in tumblr dot com, but the homoerotism is 100% there lmao.

also i totally get the boyd/ives tunnel vision bc i have it too but i wish people mentioned boyd and hart's friendship more. like there's not a lot of it but there's the little bourbon scene at the beginning and how boyd kneels down to look at hart after colqhoun kills him and the bit where hart comes back and lifts boyd onto the bed and when boyd's like "oh god you're gonna be the one to kill me" hart is like "NO! i like you. you gotta eat" and he's supporting boyd while he walks...idk there's so many little things nobody talks about
edit: i fucking forgot the biggest one. hart letting boyd out of his handcuffs in exchange for the mercy kill. bffs
