i'm always a bit unsettled by disdain for intellectual or creative labor in leftist spaces. there's this commonly held belief that academics are a bunch of rich old white men, rather than a wide variety of people who are barely getting by. most lecturers in universities are adjuncts living paycheck to paycheck. authors make very little money as a general rule. most researchers are overworked and underpaid. and yet there's still this idea that academics are overcompensated to sit around and smoke cigars together while making shit up

LIFE ADVICE FOR YOUR TEENS AND EARLY TWENTIES (and probably beyond but I haven't made it much farther than that so far):
GO OUT BY YOURSELF
LEARN HOW TO NAVIGATE PUBLIC TRANSIT WITH NO SMART PHONE
TAKE ONLINE CLASSES
MAKE PEACE WITH DISAPPOINTING YOUR PARENTS
GO TO THERAPY IF POSSIBLE
FOLLOW AFTERCARE INSTRUCTIONS FOR NEW TATTOOS AND PIERCINGS
EAT A MEAL BEFORE DRINKING
DON'T MIX DRUGS
IT'S HARD TO BE YOURSELF WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW YOURSELF SO JUST KEEP TRYING NEW THINGS
THROW EVERYTHING AT THE WALL LIKE SPAGHETTI TO SEE WHAT STICKS
YOU WILL DISCOVER YOURSELF THE SAME WAY YOU DISCOVER NEW COFFEE SHOPS AND NEW BANDS
YOU WILL GET THERE
DON'T MAKE A LONG POST IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE YOUR VOICE WILL START TO HURT FROM SHOUTING

https://www.telegraphindia.com/world/us-congressional-report-alleges-increase-in-scale-of-human-rights-abuses-in-india/cid/2015795
excerpt:
According to CRS, the 2023 Human Rights Report for the first time includes a section on India's "transnational repression against individuals in another country," noting reports the government engaged in transnational repression against journalists, members of diaspora populations, civil society activists, and human rights defenders.
Two resolutions have been introduced on India's human rights. House Resolution 542 condemns alleged human rights violations and violations of international religious freedom in India, including those targeting Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Dalits, Adivasis, and other religious and cultural minorities. It was introduced in the House in June 2023.
Senate resolution number 424 expresses the sense of the Senate that the US government engage New Delhi “to seek a swift end to the persecution of, and violence against, religious minorities and human rights defenders in India and a reversal of government policies that discriminate against Muslims and Christians based on their respective faiths". It was introduced in the Senate in October 2023.

Frightening news from Sudan. The Rapid Support Forces is continuing its genocidal campaign in the Darfur region. They seem to be gearing up for an assault on El Fasher, and currently have the city under siege. This is the largest city in Darfur, and more than 500,000 displaced people from around Sudan are currently taking refuge there. If the RSF is able to carry out an offensive, it would bring starvation, killings, and rape on a massive scale. Human rights activists in Sudan are calling on the international community to urgently intervene.
Please read the article below for further information, the severity of the situation cannot be understated.

The current state of pop girlies is so funny like
Ariana Grande: getting dragged for homewrecking with the guy who played SpongeBob in the SpongeBob musical
Taylor Swift: dropping her worst album in years about how deeply obsessed she is with Matty Healy
Billie Eilish, for some reason:

imagine being a young pony in the United Stables of aMareica during the height of Pony McCarthyism just perusing the local library and you levitate (you’re a unicorn) up a copy of the communist manifesto out of pure curiosity and as soon as you open it a hammer and sickle appear on your flank. what would you do
