People are really trying to pull the “culturally Christian atheist” nonsense at now of all times, when there are multiple far-right theo-fascist regimes

Do you have any media recommendations that are pro-immortality?
Honestly can't think of too much? Or like, some, but all in a very Christian sort of 'and in heaven there will be no death or want' way, or else it's given to some subset of superspecial awesome people without ever beeing that interested in the ethics or implications of it. (Like, Baccano! portrays being an immortal alchemist/mobster as pretty great on balance, but it's not a deep meditation on it)
Two incredibly distinct options come to mind
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue - book about a peasant girl in 17th century France makes a deal with the devil to be free to leave her life without chains or obligations for as long as she wishes. He interprets this as a) making her immortal but b) making everyone and everything forget her as soon as she leaves their line of sight forever. He keeps taunting her and waiting for her to beg for death, and three hundred years later she is absolutely adamant that she'd make the same deal again.
Eclipse Phase - incredibly late 2000s/early 2010s anarcho-transhumanist cosmic horror ttrpg where you play as the transhuman remnants of humanity living on various extraplanetary colonies after some strategic command AIs on earth went bad and Terminator happened. The main consequence of death is that you need to get someone to retrieve your corticol stack/load from your most recent backup and buy/beg/borrow/steal a new body for yourself. Great gonzo worldbuilding intermixed with politics so hamfisted they make me wanna sympathize with the theo-fascist Bush-Adminsitration-on-Jupiter just to spite the authors.

Extremist fundamentalists of different religions seem to have more in common with each other than they do with moderates of the same faith. They are invariably intolerant control freaks who feel they have the right to impose their wills on others. MAGA Mike Johnson would fit in well with Iran's theocrats.
Since his fellow Republicans made him their leader, numerous articles have reported Johnson’s religiously motivated, far-right views on abortion, same-sex marriage and LGBTQ+ rights. But that barely scratches the surface. Johnson was a senior lawyer for the extremist Alliance Defending Fund (later the Alliance Defending Freedom) from 2002 to 2010. This is the organization responsible for orchestrating the 303 Creative v Elenis legal arguments to obtain a ruling from the supreme court permitting a wedding website designer to refuse to do business with gay couples. It also played a significant role in annulling Roe v Wade. The ADF has always been opposed to privacy rights, abortion and birth control. Now Roe is gone, the group is laying the groundwork to end protection for birth control. Those who thought Roe would never be overruled should understand that the reasoning in Dobbs v Jackson is not tailored to abortion. Dobbs was explicitly written to be the legal fortress from which the right will launch their attacks against other fundamental rights their extremist Christian beliefs reject. They are passionate about rolling back the right to contraception, the right to same-sex marriage and the right to sexual privacy between consenting adults. Johnson’s inerrant biblical truth leads him to reject science. Johnson was a “young earth creationist”, holding that a literal reading of Genesis means that the earth is only a few thousand years old and humans walked alongside dinosaurs. He has been the attorney for and partner in Kentucky’s Creation Museum and Ark amusement park, which present these beliefs as scientific fact, a familiar sleight of hand where the end (garnering more believers) justifies the means (lying about science). For them, the end always justifies the means. That’s why they don’t even blink when non-believers suffer for their dogma.
There was recently a big experiment in rejecting science with the far right campaigning against COVID-19 vaccinations. That may have cost hundreds of thousands of lives in the US. MAGA Mike would like to apply that to all sectors of life in the US.
Setting aside all of these wildly extreme, religiously motivated policy preferences, there is a more insidious threat to America in Johnson’s embrace of scriptural originalism: his belief that subjective interpretation of the Bible provides the master plan for governance. Religious truth is neither rational nor susceptible to reasoned debate. For Johnson, who sees a Manichean world divided between the saved who are going to heaven and the unsaved going to hell, there is no middle ground. Constitutional politics withers and is replaced with a battle of the faithful against the infidels. Sound familiar? Maybe in Tehran or Kabul or Riyadh. But in America?
By doing anything other than voting Democratic in an election (i.e. voting Republican, wasting a vote on a loser third party, writing in a dead gorilla, not voting at all) people help pave the way for a fascist theocracy in the US.
Tumblr media
Speaker MAGA Mike Johnson is already second in line for the presidency. That is WAY too close.
Voting may not always be convenient but theo-fascism is far less convenient.

Netanyahu needs to go and not just for this failure. He’s been a heavy handed autocrat for years.
That said we shouldn’t be victim blaming the Israelis in this time of crisis. Hamas are not some type of “avengers” championing the Palestinians. Hamas did this at the request of their masters the Iranians and Vlad Putin. The leaders of Hamas live in mansions in Qatar while the Palestinians have the worst living conditions in the world. Most Palestinians do not support Hamas and see them as an occupying force that brings nothing but death and destruction to Gaza. Further there is a growing movement inside Israel to reject older hard liners like creepy Netanyahu and finally reach some sort of amicable settlement with the Palestinians.
The Palestinians had just completed a deal with Israel that would have loosened sanctions and allowed more aid into Gaza and the West Bank. Now that is out the window and the Palestinians are back to being human shields for the Hamas terrorists. Hamas had just been hosted by Putin in Moscow where they promised a big distraction that would sow chaos and discord among the western nations supporting Ukraine. Iran is a leading arms supplier to Russia and the principal master and financier to Hamas and Hezbollah.
There will never be peace in the Middle East as long as duplicitous rogue states like Iran are sponsoring extra national shadow governments and militias. Middle East kingdoms need a villain to distract and unite their people. Israel (and its ally the U.S.) are the foil for the theo-fascists states in that region. There are no easy solutions here and Israel is not entirely blameless. But now is not the time to stick it to Israel as Hamas terrorists are beheading babies and burning other infants alive. That’s a bad look for those of us on the left and it’s being exploited heavily by Fox and other right wing outlets. You’re not supporting the Palestinians at this point, you’re celebrating Hamas’s ISIS style terrorism.

Members of International Ukraine Anti-Fascist Solidarity ensured that the Odessa massacre on 2 May 2014 was not forgotten on May Day in London.
Today's march was also the largest for several years as Britain goes through a huge wave of national strikes and workers face the highest inflation in decades after years of below inflation pay increases.

You are way too nice to Death Eaters. Honestly you should probably check on that. Like, canonically both Blaise and Pansy didn't take the Mark but were supportive of Voldemort's side and benefited from the blood purity thing and in your posts it's always "There's two sides to every story," and "Everyone has a different perspective," which is right! But one of these side is very much the Wrong Side and I'm not sure you see it clearly. (This isn't an attack, I love your fanfic very much but it's a genuine concern.)
So,
The point of saying that there are different perspectives is not to say that therefore everyone's actions are justified. It is to suggest that most situations are far more complex than we give them credit for, that it is incorrect to believe that your reality and my reality are identical. That is what is interesting about exploring a story from multiple perspectives, you get to see how it changes based on everyone's personal view of the world. That doesn't mean no one can ever be held accountable for anything. It simply complicates traditional narratives which usually have a singular voice (a protagonist) telling the story. The whole point of hlayk (where Blaise, Pansy and Draco are concerned) is to take a group of children who were raised in a bigoted environment, and in the middle of a war, and show them as adults, several years after that, trying to come to terms with what happened to them and what they did.
Like:
It was stupid of him to think they could make this work. Stupid of him to think that George would be able to forgive him. Most days he can’t forgive himself. How had he gotten sucked in? Why hadn’t he seen it sooner? The darkness, the violence, the hurt. Why hadn’t he stopped Theo? Or Draco? He had stood by and watched the people around him destroy themselves. Stood by and allowed himself to be destroyed. And he can say that he’d been young but so had George. So had Harry. So had Ron. And yet they managed to figure it out. To this day Blaise can’t come up with a satisfying answer to the question of why. Why his first instinct hadn’t been goodness and kindness and bravery. Why those seem to be things he has to work on, build up to. Why. Why. Why.
I am very much trying to deal with what they did. This whole story is about grief and healing and Blaise and Draco and Pansy trying to figure out how to live with themselves, is a huge part of that.
While on the topic of things I'm trying to do with this story. Another big part of this, is looking at the ways in which men specifically are radicalized. The ways that traditional conceptions of masculinity make men more susceptible to this kind of fascist rhetoric / thinking. Blaise, Draco and Theo are three boys all struggling with what it means to be "a man" and they're doing so in this very politically charged context. "Manliness" is presented to them, as it is presented to many people, as being about domination. You are the strongest. The biggest. The loudest. The most important. People serve you. You'll notice that, if you look at propaganda for things like empire (in the British imperial sense) the language is very "masculine". Colonizing people is a very "manly" thing to do, it will help you realize your full "manly" potential etc. etc. etc. Blaise's chapter in this fic deals a lot with the ways that these boys get sucked into this extremist group in an attempt to prove that they are "men". Another reason that I like to have different POVs is that I don't really believe in redemption arcs in the sense that, I don't think redemption is something universal, I think individuals decide whether or not someone can be redeemed. There is a moment in this latest chapter where Hermione and Draco have a conversation and he is repenting and he's changed etc. etc. and she's like "dope, sick, love that for you, but I don't forgive you" and he accepts that. Different people, in different positions, with different life experiences, will be able to forgive different things. However, not a single person in this story doesn't think that the Death Eaters were bad. I feel like maybe that also needs to be cleared up. Like I am not, nor have I ever, presented the Death Eaters as anything but morally reprehensible. All I have tried to do is show that the ways people (especially children) get sucked into these things can be very complex. And that, I do believe, that we have to allow people to grow. That we have to allow people the space to say "I did the wrong thing and I now recognize it was the wrong thing and I would very much like to stop doing it" because otherwise what is the point? Like literally what is the point. Blaise says some horrible shit when he's sixteen (hlayk is not canon compliant BUT if it was) and then he just never gets to grow from that? He doesn't get to try to be better? He's just stuck? Like what does that achieve? How is that good for anybody? For what it's worth, I do try very hard not to engage with serious subject matter carelessly.

Babylon 5 s03e02: Convictions table of contents • previous episode
Good news, you all have an ally living in my house. My partner, who up to this point hasn't not been watching with me, has started gently chivvying me towards the couch when I haven't watched B5 in a few days. He checks on me like a worried border collie. "Feeling ok? You haven't watched Babylon 5 in awhile…your brain is busy? Babylon 5 will fix that." Completely coincidentally I have also surpassed the episodes he vaguely remembers seeing on tv when they aired.
Kinda seems like the Drazi are started to fill the background ecological niche left by the sad departure of the entire Markab species.
Zack Allen deserves the poking. Stop being a space fascist, Zack.
bombs away Down Below! Ivanova's crank caller wasn't so crank after all!
The intro changed again!
Dang! This is hype. Vir's is the best cameo ahahahaha. No, I lie, it's G'Kar's. But Vir's is the funniest.
Drazi missionaries, human missionaries. And a bombing!
The Drazi are here to witness the site of the miracle of Droshalla (Kosh), and Brother Theo et al are here to live forever and ever hooray. I do hope the religious stuff isn't too tedious. Although if they really are here to do comparative religious studies, that could be interesting.
The human monks are also geeks with high tech skills. hm.
Garibaldi and his team have found bomb remnants, so it's officially a bomb event that needs to be investigated.
Lennier has only seven days to live?! Actually, Lennier will lie to stop being bothered in an airport and do penance over it, which is far funnier.
The bombings are getting really serious. People can just smuggle anything onto B5, I guess!
Get well soon, Lennier! Should have let Londo take the hit, but he's built different.
G'Kar believes that the bombs are being placed by Centauri agents who are starting a terror campaign, and he's been right about everything so it's entirely possible. If so, I don't think that Londo knows about it. I do really doubt that it's the Narns, as Londo's claiming.
"There's nothing political about the truth, Captain, as you will discover soon enough."
untrue. There's significant political meaning in everything presented as truth.
save me from Londo's prattling. I'd come out of a coma to ask him to stop with the circular reasoning. It's sweet of him to hang out and visit with Lennier while he's comatose, though.
A third bomb was found just in time to clear the area, and the explosives were stolen from an ice mining rig, and there were bombings elsewhere with the same batch of explosions. Lucky they had the technologically-inclined monks willing to barter their labor for residency to screen all their video date to look for the bomber(s)!
Unless the monks are responsible. Although they're so condescending about the simplicity of the task, maybe not.
G'Kar and Londo chance meeting in a turbolift! Trapped by a bombing together in a turbolift! This uhhhh will be stressful for G'Kar I'll wager.
Dang, maybe the bombings are the Narns, aimed at Londo! That's the second bombing that almost got him. I'm inclined to think it's not the Narns, though, Having access to, and safety on Babylon 5 is one of their greatest strategic advantages.
Unless Centauri are very different from Narns, being unconscious for two hours indicates a severe head injury, certainly a concussion at the very least.
Londo: We will die if we don't work together. G'Kar: *laughing* "No."
G'Kar won't help save himself and Londo, won't work with Londo, because G'Kar might die, but it's worth it to watch Londo die, too. Logical! He's done so much hard to the Narnuan people, planet, colonies, and the entire galaxy's odds of victory against the Shadows.
"No. As the humans say: "Up yours! Die!""
It's nice to see G'Kar so chipper! He has something really nice to look forward to, and got to share the joke to boot. Love this for him.
I choose to believe that Sheridan just hid his link in his undies. ^^
idk much about bomber psychology, and idk how much of the analysis of is legit and what's literallly fed propaganda. So I'm willing to accept anything B5 tells me, here.
There are chaotic times, and this guy has felt afraid and buffetted by it, so he wants everyone on Babylon 5 to feel that way, too. He's got to have some backers, Some planners. Some accomplices! Right?? Thinking about the time this episode was made, that's Waco, Oklahoma City, Kaczynski. Very home grown terrorism ranging from religious right to literally-tortured-in-cia-experiments. This seems to be more commentary on the disaffected blue collar worker end than the unethical experiments side of things.
The secret bomb has been found and it's also big and would wreck the fusion core.
My theory has been proved right! Sheridan's link was in his tighty-whities!
Partner: It was in his butt.
Bomber did not like the link in the pants reveal, but luckily, Sheridan's down to scrap!
Oh, they're just literally throwing the bomb into space! Well, if it works, it works!
Bomber: "It's not fair. It's not fair!" Sheridan: *cold-cocks him*
lmao, perfect.
Wow, they don't know that Londo and G'Kar are both missing!
Still not a very funny joke, but much funnier that Lennier heard and remembered Londo telling it to him, and then woke up to repeat it to Delenn before Dr Franklin could get through the punchline.
"I did what I did because all life is sacred. But when the object of your actions does not share that belief, I fear I have served the present by sacrificing the future."
Even Lennier is like "Maybe I shouldn't have saved Londo." That's really harsh of him, damn! The harsh world is shaving down his soft, fluffiness and it's really sad!
Londo: "I'm going to live!" G'Kar: "Well, it's an imperfect universe."
Londo: "I hate my life." G'Kar: "Me too." Londo: "Shut up!"
At least if G'Kar had to think he was going to die, and had a rough day, he lived knowing he had made Londo's day even worse than G'Kar's. An excellent note to end this on.
next!

13. worst blorboficiation
This one is easy: ARMITAGE HUX.
When The Force Awakens came out in 2015, General Hux was mildly prominent among the minor characters. He gave a speech, gave Kylo Ren side-eye, and supervised the destruction of billions of people and their civilization. Other than that, he was not-a-bad-looking man with red hair who could fill out a suit who was on the screen for a smidge over four minutes in an 138-minute movie.
And the fandom blorbo-ed the shit out of him.
It mystified me then; it mystifies me now. Hux was clearly intended to be a hollow man, someone so eager to attach himself to any vision of something greater that he was a willing -- enthusiastic! -- participant in genocide. He was the type of soulless bureaucrat that fascist regimes have always needed to accomplish their goals. In his total of twelve minutes of screen time, the only thing that kept him from being nothing more than an animated Nazi-esque mannequin was his annoyance with Kylo Ren's antics and the fact that in the end he was unsurprisingly revealed to be a spineless incompetent.
Of course, someone could say that him a blank slate onto which people could project their desires, and the only way I can respond to that cliché is with another cliché: "That's worse. You get how that's worse, right?"
There are literally dozens of minor characters who are far more of a blank slate than a man who could have been in charge of the coat-check at the Wannsee Conference. But the 'worst' part is: that's the point. It's somehow liberating to certain people to dabble with the forbidden, to take the absolute worse examples of humanity and hug them to their breast, as long as there's just enough distance between him and real life that they feel no one can call them out on it. And that he's a young white man.
14. that one thing you see in fics all the time
The Trauma Olympics is not only a terrible way to view the characterizations in your favorite media property, but it's also hypocritical as hell. At these games, the judges always cheat.
I want to be clear. I'm not talking about when fanfictions explore the traumas that serve to establish characterization, even when these traumas create monsters and villains. It's fascinating to see how identity and character can buckle under the force of an excruciating experience.
No, what I'm talking about is when trauma is used as a tool to distort the narrative into something it was never intended to be. The Trauma Olympics can be used to dehumanize or decentralize heroic protagonists because they didn't allow trauma to upend their moral character, which is what makes them a heroic protagonist. The Trauma Olympics can be used to cloak antagonists or outright villains as the true victims because their reactions to what shaped them are not healthy. Comparing one trauma to another creates a scale whose sole purpose is to make characters more or less valid, and that denies the essential individuality of all characters. If a story governs the arc of all characters by an arbitrary scale of the severity of their pain, it's simply bad writing.
And it's arbitrary. Context is stripped at will from pre-existing stories in order to increase or decrease their final scores. It turns a fanfiction story into propaganda; it can't help but do that.
Let me give you an example. I can't tell how many times in my own fandom, Scott, the protagonist, is castigated for not treating one villain EXACTLY like he treated the other villains. Peter-stans write stories where Scott is a hypocrite for treating Theo with more mercy; Theo-stans write stories where Scott is a hypocrite for treating Peter with more mercy. Peter got sent to a low-quality mental health facility and imprisoned with a deranged psychic, while Theo got sent to a discount punishment realm by appropriated demigods, and yet both argue with equal fervor of the unfairness of that comment, with no analysis of why this happened. Only the pain inflicted on their blorbos matter and that pain is seen as undermining the narrative when compared to others.
Or another example -- the fandom loves to excoriate Scott, the heroic protagonist, when he grabbed Derek by the back of the neck and forced him to bite Gerard, the villain, as part of a ruse to defeat the old bastard. You see, Derek was a victim of sexual assault six years ago, and this had to be triggering to his trauma. Scott is monstrous because he used sexual assault (it wasn't) against a survivor (of something which Scott didn't know about) and profane a sacred ritual of Derek's family (which the Bite isn't -- just ask Jackson Whittemore and Victoria Argent) as part of his scheme (and not because the villain threatened to kill his love). And yet, this same fandom remains adamantly silent when Peter Hale, as part of a scheme to gain power and kill the heroic protagonist, leads that very same Derek (his nephew) into an ambush arranged by the woman who sexually assaulted Derek as part of a deception designed to ambush and kill their family. It doesn't even occur to them to note the hypocrisy -- if the Trauma Olympics makes Scott a terrible person, than Peter should win the Gold Medal. Yet I've never seen it dealt with in fanfiction.
15. that one thing you see in fanart all the time
I love fanart. I wish I could make it, but my lack of talent is a difficulty I have yet to overcome. But what always disappoints me is when an iconic and important image about a character-- often romantic -- is repurposed in fanart to serve as an iconic image between a different character in the same property. It just seems to me unnecessary, unimaginative, and demeaning to the original character.
For example, one of the promo shots for Season 3A of Teen Wolf has Scott standing in the front of the cast. Some artist exerted a lot of effort to rearrange the photo to put Stiles in the front. It was a lot of work, a lot of talent, and it was used in the worst possible way. Or when the upside down kiss from Spider-Man is used in the same fandom. It just strikes me as cheap.

Hi there!
Tumblr media
I've had this blog for a while and I felt the need to make another one like this (since it's impossible to find the first one lol)
So here we go!
- You can call me Maki or Theo! I don't really mind which one you're using
- I'm 17
- I'm open to making friends, but I have some problems talking to other people, but feel free to try if you want!
- Just to make things more comfortable, I'm going to leave an age limit for friendships, I think it's better- so, I'm not so open to talking to people under 14 or people over 20 (but exceptions may occur I think)
- I post a little bit of everything here, and about any fandom I want (because I'm in many)
- About time zones... well, I live in Brazil so do the math :P
- About other things, I have anxiety and OCD if that's a useful information for you
- About my drawings, I know I don't draw that well and I'm aware of that, but I'm trying to have fun anyway
- I'm pansexual and non-binary
- I use he/him
- It's fine with me if you wanna tag me in tag chains and picrew chains
- I'm a cosplayer and a actor
- Fandoms I'm in: JSHK, Osomatsu-san, TPN, Undertale and Underverse, FNAF, Music Freaks, Gacha, Assassination Classroom, Ordem Paranormal, Shadows House, TADC, Steven Universe, TOH, Hazbin Hotel, Helluva Boss and Backrooms (I'll add more if I remember later)
- My kins (idk maybe you want to know): Ink!Sans (UT AUs), Osomatsu, Ichimatsu and Todomatsu (Osomatsu-san), Hanako and Tsukasa (JSHK), Gregory (FNAF SB) and Joui and Olivier (Ordem Paranormal)
DNI: Do not interact if you are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, fascist, pro-shippers, in short, be a decent person to interact here. To avoid stress, if you are a Tsukasa Yugi hater, please don't interact, we probably won't have a pleasant coexistence
I think that's all, thank you for reading this far and I hope we can have a good time here ^^

The southlands! Isildur! Numenor! Galadriel! Elendil! That's the two storylines we're getting this episode, isn't it.
GAUNTLET. Love that dirt. Ooh, what dark magic is this?
I so want to know how many of these guys Adar is actually the dad of. It could be a lot.
He sure can give a speech wow
Like it's a flat out fascist speech, but, ya know, they're not animals
GIMBATUL!
Still not sure why the evil sword sculpture is in the elf tower
Adar continues to be suspiciously silent on the subject of Sauron
Here goes thr plan! Good job Arondir
New theory: Adar is Turgon
The Numenorean soldiers are sleeping cheek by jowl, but those ships STILL look like they must be bigger on the inside.
Galadriel CAN be a good commander when she tries
Don't ask personal questions about people's mothers
I suppose this show has enough bad bitches, they can be allowed ONE dead mother
Map!
I likw the look of the Numenorean battle armor
Hitting it a bunch is not gonna work, Arondir. Guess he can't be good at everything
I swear I'm not slut shaming Bronwyn, but I like her little shawl-thing. Makes her outfit look more put together
Another one for the "light" motif
Ah the old, "you'll be their protector" ploy
I am SO TORN as to whether Theo is Arondir's son or not. There's so many reasons to think he is, but Arondir and Bronwyn simple do not strike me as two people who have already slept together
BIG DAMN KISS
The ranks of orcs always follow the path of the land, giving them a strong "flowing water" vibe
Get that woman a Bic!
Are the torches for intimidation/source of fire? I bet the orcs don't need them to see.
Wow I would have expected a wood elf to have better falling off of roofs skill
His karate skills are top notch though
Eew, right in the eye
Wow that final struggle went on forever
I mean, the guys fighting on the orc side certainly weren't holding back
Bronwyn duck!
Bronwyn's the only one who has npc levels and can survive getting hit with an arrow
Fortunately, Bronwyn got hit in the upper chest, famously a place where no important body parts live
Medical drama!!!
Oh gosh AND they're field cauterizing the wound? I should get out my bingo card
Bronwyn makes such wonderful pain faces, the acting is magnificent
Nah, this is not a dramatically appropriate place for her to die.
Yeah I would have passed out for a minute after that too
Adar!!
HERE THEY COME!
Like the hand of God. GLORIOUS!
Galadriel is as big of a drama queen as Sauron when it comes to horse color
Why is it full daylight where the Numenoreans are? Are they still in the past?
Don't give in to threats, Arondir!
Is it actually there, though?
It is? Arondir, you couldn't have at least taken it out of the village?
LET'S GOOOOOOOOO NUMENOR!
Remember: stab, twist, THEN gut
Ontamo! The Meriadoc Brandybuck of Numenor
Don't worry Isildur. You'll have time to go completely dephalagulatingly nuts later.
Horse chase! Through the woods!
Oh thank god the horse is okay
Oh no his other hand ow
Uh insight check on Adar not knowing who Halbrand is. Unfortunately the Sauron hints keep piling up. If you wanted to see it you totally could.
Besides, we gotta question this guy
I love that Isildur is the shortest of his friends. Take that jrrt
When she was a child? So, the ORIGINAL orcs? SWEET
No not his kids!
"Healing" Middle-earth. Oh "perfect order", yeah, that sounds like Sauron
Oh yeah the evil spirit magic experiments
Oh my god that's adorable. He didn't just split with Sauron because of power rivalry, but because he loves his kids
"Split him open"????
Doubt.
THEY ARE CHILDREN OF THE ONE SAME AS YOU
Galadriel, God doesn't make mistakes :(
IN YOUR OWN MIRROR OH MY GOOOOOOOD
Whoa, chill girl. Don't let him bait you like that
The thing is, it would be so easy for Halbrand to be merely what he seems (well mostly). AND YET.
Yeah there's no motion toward each other. They just look at each other and talk about their personal growth. No sexual tension detected.
Bronwyn go lay down. You're not well enough to stand up yet.
Miriel you inherited your power, what does that say about you
Lord Halbrand? I didn't vote for you
If you miss feeling powerful, Theo, might I interest you im a nice ring?
Oh yes, throwing the evil artifact in the sea is a wonderful idea
Where's the sword??
Still don't know why the sword goes there
Oh shit are they gonna flood the whole town??
Uh it's not Isildur's pain that's bothering Berek either guys
Awww father son hug
Heeeere it comes
Yikes are they gonna sinkhole the town? Is that what the tunnels are for?
Udun? Oh fuck
Fucking volcanos, how do they work?
GTFO guys!
You can't stop phase one
Take shelter where???
Is Galadriel having PTSD flashbacks to the Dagor Bragollach or what? Move, girl!
ADAR NO! Man I hope he lives.

Second time trying to answer this! @nire-the-mithridatist and @sister-cna-reader both asked for this and tumblr ate the first one so let's try this version.
FN is the first in a series. It's got a split timeline with a roughly 20 year gap between.
Setting for book one is an island nation called the Shattered Isles, founded centuries ago after a group of pirates took over the original volatile magics institute that was there. The past timeline is told from the perspective of the eponymous Nightingale as she struggles to become a leader in an armed rebellion against a fascist regime. The problem: she's always been the mad tinkerer sidekick and has social skills only marginally better than a feral cat.
Future timeline is told from the perspective of 17 y/o Theo as she and her cousin Vince do a school project about the war. The problem: Vince is the son of the biggest hero the war had and their project threatens to reveal some very dark secrets that could unravel the entire family.
Snippet from the past timeline below:
He runs a hand through his hair, curls standing on end in the wake. “Yer part of that crew in the Gold, ain’t ya? Heard they lost some’n important. I take it ya wanna go back to 'em?”
Go back to—ah, that would be the assumption, wouldn’t it?
“No,” she says. “Only the Silver. Where I was living is Wallside with the northern boundary. There’s a way in that doesn’t involve the Climb,” she adds.
He squints at her. “You don’t want to go back?” he asks, honey-slow.
“I was poisoned, yes?” When he nods, she shifts to straighten her spine, shoulders back and head held high. “Then it was an inside job. The only ones who had access that night were all high-ranking members of our team.”
It’s this. This is what she remembers:
Her study in golden light, notes across her desk. A plate of starberry sweets next to an empty teacup. And Kit. Her Kit. Bringing her a fresh cup, taking the old, and pressing a kiss to her temple.
He told her not to stay up too late.
Her favourite person, with her favourite tea; the only thing she consumed that night that she herself did not make.
But Kit wouldn’t. He would never. And he didn’t. She knows this as surely as she knows the sun will rise.
But someone did.

109. Her Majesty’s Royal Coven, by Juno Dawson
Tumblr media
Owned?: No, library Page count: 450 My summary: High in the upper echelons of government is a secret coven of witches. Her Majesty’s Royal Coven works from the shadows to fight magical threats to the land. When Helena, head of HMRC, hears a prophecy about an ancient evil rising, she’s naturally concerned; especially when the coven catches the boy who will bring this evil forth, Theo. But her comrades are turning on her. Her old friends Leonie, Elle, and Niamh are taking Theo’s side...and she will not let this country fall. My rating: 4/5 My commentary:
Ah, Juno Dawson. She’s one of my favourite writers, I’ve really enjoyed the books in her previous teen work that I’ve read, so naturally I wanted to check out her first novel for adults. In a nutshell, I really enjoyed it, though the plot and writing were not without their flaws - it was an enjoyable urban fantasy book overall though, and Dawson’s writing is filled with the usual sparkle and flair. I liked a lot of the worldbuilding, and hell, it’s a book about witches. I’m always down for that!
(Spoilers under the cut.)
So yeah, Helena is the worst. One thing about Dawson, she writes a really credible TERF nightmare. Helena is exactly the white, straight, middle-class privileged asshole who thinks she’s at the bottom of the totem pole just because she’s also a woman that exists a thousand times over in the real world. One think I really liked about the writing on her was that her POV chapters still help you understand her thought process and why she makes the choices she makes, without ever inviting you to think the way she does. The other POV characters are a delight. I like the spread of women we have here - vain housewife and mother Elle, crafty loner Niamh, and urban lesbian Leonie, all of whom side with and protect Theo against Helena and the HMRC, slowly breaking away from their remaining ties with the coven to stand against their old friend. Their friendship is complex and compelling, and they’re all very distinct characters.
Speaking of Theo, if you didn’t see the revelation that she’s trans coming, you’ve probably never read a Dawson book before. I liked Theo a lot, she’s quiet and anxious but blossoms into a powerful young witch with time. The issue, really, is that it’s very Baby’s First Trans - Theo is more a side character than anything else, and she’s not a POV character. Which is fine, this isn’t really a criticism or anything, but if you’re expecting this book to contain a trans story, it doesn’t really. More of a trans side-story.
The world of HMRC is interesting enough - witchcraft is real, but is a well-guarded secret. Witches are split into different strengths, with only a few being able to cast multiple forms of magic. Most magical understanding comes from HMRC itself, so is inherently biased towards white witches and traditions - something Leonie, who is black, is actively trying to combat. I like that Dawson introduces these biases in the system so that she can point them out and play with them a bit, mirroring the experience of any traditions from people of colour which are seen as lesser by English society. There was a previous war against fascistic mages, which we never really ‘see’ but hear a lot about, giving this impression of a wider world. Also, I loved how northern this book is. It basically takes place in my neck of the woods, including the bloodline of the Pendle witches. Hell yeah!
Next up, well, there’s only one way to introduce this...welcome to Night Vale.

The huge Russian toll on animal life
Over the past 280-some days of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, any number of stories have appeared describing the terrible cost to animals and also those trying to help them.
Animal shelters have literally been attacked.  It’s unclear (from my reading) if this is deliberate or accidental.  However, since there are few if any moral limits to the Russian terror campaign in Ukraine, nothing should surprise us.

Russians have actually shelled at least one zoo, killing employees with with shells and deliberately through gunfire.

The photos and stories in this article highlight not just human and animal suffering but the moral catastrophe of humanity.

“Glasha (left) and one of her puppies at an animal shelter in Dnipro on July 8. Glasha was at the site of an explosion after a rocket attack on Dnipro. She was found injured with a broken paw and numerous scratches. The next day, Glasha's puppies were pulled from under the rubble. They are in shock, and one has a hip fracture.“ https://www.npr.org/sections/pictureshow/2022/09/20/1119965460/russia-ukraine-war-animal-pet-rescue-photos
As is often the case with humanity, the best of us succumb to the treachery of the worst of us:
It’s not just pet owners who are putting themselves at risk; so is the network of volunteers trying to keep supply lines open to them. Family members say Russian troops shot and killed Anastasiia Yalanskaya, a Ukrainian animal rescue volunteer, as she tried to deliver food to a dog shelter near Kyiv.
Staff at shelters in Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine say the troops show little regard for the needs of people or animals.

Before the war, Sirius was the largest animal shelter in Ukraine and home to more than 3,000 dogs and over 200 cats at its main facility north of Kyiv.
Thankfully, the Russians have been militarily defeated in the area.  But how many animals suffered and died needlessly?  How many dear family pets, lost in the panic of fleeing Russian attack, have ended up here, never to go home or be with their families again?
Russian destruction of wildlife surely counts as some of the worst environmental crimes of this or any century.  However, so weak is the global environmental legal regime that likely no one will be held accountable for it.

Behold the handiwork of Putinism, the god-sick Russian Orthodox Church, the Russian Military, the poisonous intellectual legacy of the theo-fascist Ivan Ilyin, the Eurasian ideologue and anti-Ukraine genocidaire Alexander Dugin, etc.:
Tumblr media
I feel sick in my soul reading all of this.  I can readily find temporary reason to think that there’s nothing worthwhile about humanity if this is what we do, and it might be better if we weren’t around any longer.

Previous anon here, thanks for enlightening me :) Are there any other people that are on a grey list or?? With most of them I can tell if their vibes are off, I was a bit surprised but not that shocked about what you said. It’s a shame, being a decent human being isn’t that hard and he does look like a good guy but I guess we’ll never know 🤷🏼‍♀️
You’re welcome anon!
Honestly the more attached you get to some of the drivers, the more you end up finding out. Marcus for example was my fave driver for like 3 years before that came out, but yeah
Tbh I’ve been out of the loop with F2 this season, as much as I watch most of the races it’s been kinda hard for me to remember who’s actually racing. However as far as I know these are a few others to avoid:
Juri Vips - as mentioned in the last post, said the n-word on Liam Lawson’s live stream and also refused to wear Liam’s pink cap cause it was “a gay colour” (side note: i think Liam is ok, the only issue people have is that he laughed off the Vips incident rather than confronting him i guess?)
Richard Verschoor - allegedly said the n-word (cant remember when or where though so i dont have too much to say except i vaguely remember this)
Logan Sargeant - is a trump supporter and comes from a family that donated to Trump’s presidential campaign. If I remember correctly, he also captioned a few of his insta posts with MAGA and I read on reddit he wanted it on his F3 car (although they could’ve been confusing him with Santino Ferrucci + it also goes against the FIA political code)
Amaury Cordeel - was exposed on twitter last year (?) for sending explicit messages to minors. He also posted a video of himself speeding on the highway on TikTok, then tried to get out of it by saying he wasnt the one driving.
Enzo Fittipaldi - (allegedly) same as Cordeel above, however apparently he and his family also support the fascist leader of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, and his racing career has been funded with his support (see Banco do Brasil sponsorship).
I believe that’s everyone who I know of that is very :/ as a person, some people also don’t like Theo Pourchaire but I don’t think he’s done anything questionable - it’s just his extremely salty social media posts after bad race weekends and when he didn’t get the Alfa seat over Guanyu last season (which was definitely not unfair imo).
It’s a shame cause I liked a few of these guys before I heard about everything but what F2 has taught me is that you can’t expect a lot from these drivers.
Thanks for your question anon! <3
