Why Do the Nations Rage? by David A Ritchie (A much-needed corrective)
This book is unusual for our time and very much needed. The Deuteronomy 32 worldview has not been taught to Christians much (except in Eastern Orthodox traditions) until recently, and I don't think many Christians are still familiar with it. David Ritchie explains this worldview and through it shows the ancient, deep connections between "the powers" and the nations.
In Part 1, Mr. Ritchie introduces the concepts of the "powers," "nations," and "nationalism." In Part 2, he uses the Hebrew scriptures to show the origin of the powers, and show the connection between the powers and the nations. In Part 3, he shows how the apostle Paul understood the powers and nationalistic allegiance in the light of the redemptive power of Jesus Christ. In Part 4, he shows how nationalism conveys its own set of spiritually-charged doctrines that both mirror and distort the Gospel. And finally, in Part 5, he offers practical tips on how to deal with nationalism.
Mr. Ritchie lays out his argument in a logical and concise manner, explaining concepts that have not commonly been taught to modern Christians, but which are explained in the Bible (and which we somehow read right over, not even seeing them or which we read, think “that’s weird,” but we don’t understand it and don’t know where to start searching for an answer).
This book is a much-needed corrective for a church that has lost its way. I recommend it highly.

THE POWER IS RISING
Tumblr media
It’s Tunde Ojo and I have an answer to one of my many questions. The unanticipated power surges happening in nearly every country are not a coincidence. And this juju is not just something happening in Nigeria. At this point, I cannot consider this magic.
Tumblr media
In the UK, people have witnessed lightning-like occurrences that have developed out of nowhere. In the US, planes have malfunctioned with no real warning and electrical poles continue to fail unexpectedly. The common denominator? Teen girls. As a global citizen, I’m concerned about our safety. All of us.
But as a reporter, I must be honest and say that I am intrigued. The Power, the only name I can call it by, has the ability to change the world. While we’re watching the beginning of whatever this may be, what could happen if these powers go uncontrolled? Could this mean a complete reversal of society? The disruption of centuries-long power dynamics?
Tumblr media
I know we are not oblivious to the fact that the rich, influential, and malevolent could use the Power for their personal and political gain. The world as we know it could be changing. I’ll report back with updates when I can. Please follow to stay informed. And, wherever you are, please stay alert and aware.

ABUSE OF THE POWER
It’s Tunde Ojo, and I've just been released from jail in Romania. I was being held in President Viktor Moskolev’s mansion after my identity was revealed to the ruthless dictator during an interview. Before the guards took me away, I revealed the truth to First Lady Tatiana Moskolev. Her sister is alive and leading the women in the North.
Tumblr media
I’ve seen how Romania is reacting to women holding the Power, experimenting on and disposing of them like they are testing mice, and it makes me physically ill. But there have been some more notable developments in other countries. In the American South, Allie was apparently blessed by God with an advanced version of the Power, allowing her to perform such acts as making people bend at her will.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, in London, another girl named Roxy–who has become notorious for challenging Allie and her followers– has been seen using her EOD with a precision that most with a skein find impossible to master. It’s almost as if the most powerful are presenting themselves as mentors, establishing hope for stability with this evolution.
Tumblr media
Whether or not people choose to accept it, the Power is in our world–and it’s here to stay. As the weeks pass and more women develop the Power, it’s harder to remember a time without the organ. A time when it seemed like the patriarchy could run unopposed forever. But humanity as we knew it is now just a distant dream. Follow for updates on how we continue to navigate this reality.

Review for The Power by Naomi Alderman
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Power is a compelling dystopian novel that cover some very relevant battles regarding gender.
In Naomi Alderman’s The Power, young girls across the world are discovering they have the power to manipulate electricity. The book starts ten years before an event unknown to the reader with the first instances of girls discovering this power. As there is no main character but instead a cast, we see the introduction from a global perspective. The story then progresses across the four main view points over the next ten years of changes to the world.
It’s hard to talk about character in this book as there’s a lot to say, but you cannot write a review for this book without mentioning Allie. We learn fast that Allie is from an abusive background and that she hears a voice in her heard. Naomi does an incredible job of using this history to justify her later choices. The voice says often ‘if you want to be safe, you have to own the place’, which is exactly what Allie’s path is about. Adopting the name Mother Eve after the Power becomes global knowledge, Allie makes herself w place as the prophet of the new order. She’s clever and closed off and generally, if you were to just read her chapters of the book, I wouldn’t blame you.
Thanks to the perspectives in this book, we as the reader see how different people use this discovery. We see Allie form her new religion, Roxy Monk take over her fathers gang, Margot’s rise into senatorial power throughout the chaos, and Tunde’s prolonged adventure to report the news in new nations and his emotions as a man in this now female dominant world. Fascinating stuff, and I’d say the politics is on point. None of it feels forced but instead believable when you sit back and look at it. If this power was discovered today within women, I can picture these sorts of event’s two my place across the globe.
I have a lot of praise for this book even if I found it a little slow to start. The reason I have marked this as a four star piece is simply due to a couple of things. Number one, I wanted more. I felt it ended too soon though I suppose this was meant to leave us thinking and the next part was heavily hinted. It would be interesting to hear other people’s thoughts in the comments on this. Contrary to other reviews, I did not think the character bland at all. That said, I would’ve liked more from them, in the sense of who they are personally at least. With Roxy and Allie I was fairly satisfied in this regard, but not with Margot. She felt too much like a political tool at times. I want to know what drives her and maybe it was in the subtext but shoehorn be made a little clearer if it is.
This book is ideal for people who enjoyed things like the Hunger Games and how want something a little more ‘grown up’. An ideal read for dystopian lovers everywhere
