// so, Cirrus has gotten a new design to further reflect the people of the sky He is still mostly Skyloft to me, but now he has greater connection to the Zonai who have left a far greater impression on the remnants of culture he has left, likely revitalized by the upheaval and a second wind by link and the constructs. His connection to Skyloft is still his Loftwing Nimbus, but this design is killer for the people who would define the skies above hyrule. So an update to his character page and another revision is coming soon!

Dragon of Time - one of the largest dragons to be seen in the skies. It is said to be the oldest of its brothers, having been reported to exist in many eras, and was therefore named after its timelessness. Though some doubt whether it truly is a good dragon, for the sharp markings on its face and whitened eyes give off the impression of something dangerous
Wolf Dragon - named for its furry wolf-like appearance. It only breaks the cloud barrier at dusk and roams the night, it’s somber howl becoming a folklore for travellers in forests. Legends say that it was once a friend of the Twili, and it circles around the Arbiter’s Grounds every night
Warrior Dragon - named for the metal plating that covers its back, and for how it only seems to appear before soldiers of pure heart/soldiers down on their luck. It is said that seeing the Warrior Dragon will bless the person with strength and courage, and if a feather from one of its blue whiskers were to fall before a captain they would be ensured victory
Winged Dragon - the rarest of the dragons, for it favours staying above the clouds and roaming the islands in the sky. Unlike most other dragons, it is more bird like, being covered in crimson feathers and sprouting large wings. It’s red feathers sometimes fall to the surface, and if spotted by a romantic couple they are blessed with eternal love. Some researchers argue that the Winged Dragon is even older than the Dragon of Time
Fairy Dragon - this dragon is often seen floating above Fairy Fountains, and it is said that new fairies are born from this dragon’s scales. It too has wings, but these ones are shaped like a butterflies. Some ancient texts read that parts of fairy dragon can heal even the most fatal injury or sickness, and a great evil once sort out the dragon in order to revive their leader
Long-Eared Dragon - an unusually pink dragon, adorned with golden horns and claws and most notably long rabbit-like ears. It soars around the entirety of Hyrule, but more sightings of it have been recorded around Eventide Island than anywhere else. If you are lucky enough to get close to this dragon, there is a sense of great calm in the air around it, as if the spirit within once fought many hard battles and now roams the sky in peace
Wind Dragon - a brilliant blue dragon that is a popular legend amongst seafarers and fishermen. It roams the coastlines, and is even said to sometimes dwell under water as there are stories of large draconic shadows being spotted beneath boats. If you ever feel a sharp breeze steering your sail away from your destination, it is most likely the Wind Dragon warning you of danger. However, the Wind Dragon is also often blamed for dangerous storms
Rainbow Dragon - a remarkably smaller and yet colourful dragon with iridescent scales. It is said to harness the powers of wind, fire, water and the earth combined, making it quite difficult to approach. Legends spread amongst blacksmiths say that if one were to meld one of its scales to a weapon the weapon would become unbreakable, and in an age where smithing is becoming a lost art many pray that they’re lucky enough to see the dragon
Dragon of the Wild - perhaps the most commonly reported dragon, for some claim to have known the spirit that resides within. It flies low around the entirety of Hyrule, but will then also return to the skies to fly with the Light Dragon. Over recent years it has become a staple sight in Hyrule and stories of the dragons origins have been passed down from generation to generation. It has become a commonly worshipped symbol for adventurers and soldiers alike

This fic was originally inspired by the song Kerosene by tart, as it fits got the strong vibe of a yandere needing more in my opinion and I would recommend listening to it while reading <3 but eventually it spiralled into a full on self-aware sky x reader
Tumblr media
And with that tone, they ask me 'If I'm ready…'
Impatiently asking me to throw away my entire life for them, to cast aside everything I've ever known for the chance, the meagre chance, to stay in Hyrule. To join their duet of death, a fight that seems never-ending.
With only Sky offering me an alternate way, offering instead something more valuable than his own life to me. The offer to follow me, of his own regard instead of a twisted love demanding it of me.
Yet, still sitting here with Sky has its own charm to it. I don't feel pressured to talk or do anything unlike how it can get with the others at times.
"You know my dove, with a touch of your life I was filled with envy… The fact that I haven't been able to live with you, know you longer than I have. I scare myself sometimes."
His chuckle wasn't as reassuring as he would thought it should be if he were trying to be reassuring to me. He could just be nervous after what he simply just admitted to. I know I would be.
"How would you scare yourself with that Sky..?"
"..."
"... I don't - It's just - I… Sometimes I uh- have thoughts. This really isn't easy to say."
Why is he looking at me like I should already know what he’s talking about like he’s going on about an inside joke?
“It was a catastrophe, as a result of your sanguine vanity. Your confidence that everything was just a game, when you really knew better didn’t you?”
“...Knew better? What do you mean?”
“That I could see you… that from the moment outside the academy when I was told what buttons you would need to press to control me I started to connect everything, that I was alright with you being the one who had this ability to puppet me? You knew, didn’t you? You fell in love with me at the same time didn’t you?”
“Sky I - I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Is he - No he can’t be. He couldn’t have known he was in a game. He can’t have been in love with me since then… even if he did know… He should hate me. At best, this is some broken-down mechanical love, some remnant of stray code… Oh what am I doing lying to myself, nintendo made Link as a blank slate, there would never have been any failsafe like that. Because it shouldn’t be possible for him to become self-aware.
“When I first woke up that day it was like there was this other part of me, you it was you, but it didn’t take me long to realise that you weren’t a part of me. You were you and you could control my every single action.”
“My world at that point was a plaything for you but I wouldn’t have had it any other way.  I didn’t need to eat nor sleep when you were there for me, it was like I was complete. I was blinded by looking for Zelda for so long that I wasted the time I could’ve spent just basking in you.”
“I love you more than I need to breathe because you complete me… but you don’t feel the same.”
“Because I’m just a toy to you aren’t I? Be-because you left me. You just left, you left me behind and didn’t come back.”
Everything, he knows everything. Where do I start, how do I handle this? I can’t leave him spiralling like this, it’s not fair to him. Would he even believe what I’ll tell him? Do I want to tell him?
“Sky I’m not going to lie to you. I did see you as just a game, I didn’t know that you were a person that you were alive. But I know better now. You’re not just a toy.”
“But I was just that to you…  you - you were just like a god that was sent from above to help me in my darkest moments. I didn’t- I mean I know, I shouldn’t have been able to have known any of that but I just - I don’t - I- I don-”
Tapering off into the most heartwrenching sobs after all of that isn’t something I could ever have imagined coming from the hero of the skies. I can’t comfort him. I’m not a monster.But I’m not a god either. Even if that’s what he saw me as, even though that’s what he wants me to be.
“Sky I’m not a god. I never was, but I do care about you, I’ve said it before and seeing as you need to hear it now more than ever. I love you Sky. The you, I’ve gotten to know over this whole thing with the shadow.”
“But I - [Name] I just -”
“I know this is a lot to go through. It must’ve been absolute torture going through all of that. Can you breathe for me? I’m here to listen to you but I can’t if you’re too stressed to speak properly.”
“I - Thank you.”
The tears staining his face are starting to dry now, leaving streaks as proof of his own sadness, ones that have too much emotion behind to have been faked. All of this has to be true, there’s too much detail on things I’ve never mentioned to him for him to be lying to me based on one thing he’s heard about my own world. Which means he’s been aware of me for so much longer than he’s let on. That he might have known me for far longer than he’s let on. There’s no safe way to ask this now though so I’ll just have to hope he brings it up on his own.
“I first figured out that I was this character after the dream I had about demise, after I woke up, when Horwell was talking to me about the lost remlit and how he told me to press z to target him, not even calling me by my name he called me Sky. But what made it even worse is I could remember fighting demise, making up with Groose and getting the triforce yet I was back to the start and being called something different.”
“That’s when you knew? Did you realise it was me immediately or did that take longer? You don’t have to answer of course, just talk about what you’re comfortable with Link.”
His breathing is slowly evening out now, clearly his earlier panic is starting to subside. Although now I don’t have my past option of being able to move away from him anymore, not with how he’s leaned all his weight against my side in, if he wasn’t so deeply upset about all of this, what I could call a desperate attempt to keep me by him. With all of this only seemingly proved more by how he’s tangling his fingers in mine to hold my hand tightly against his chest.
“I first knew it was you when Zelda pushed me off that landing again. Your disgust at her doing that, at her not trusting me even though you already knew it was going to happen at that point. It wasn’t until I was first in the temple with Fi that I saw you properly though. I couldn’t even spare more than a second to bask in your beauty because, well I was scared that if I acted too differently from what you expected then you would just abandon me, but I wanted too more badly than anything. What I wouldn’t have given at that time to just have been able to spare more than a simple glance at you. Who I wouldn’t have killed to get the faintest chance to simply hold you.”
“...What was that last thing you said?”
“What do you mean my dove? The fact I would’ve given anything to spare a glance at you?”
“No that other thing you said.”
“That I couldn’t act differently out of fear that you would abandon me to a lifeless world where everyone was acting like soulless husks only repeating the same line over and over and over.”
“No that very- you know what, don't worry about it.”
The last remains of his tears finally fade away now as he nuzzles himself further into my shoulder and brings up our intertwined hands to kiss my own. Drawing out the moment as long as he can, fitting as he’s spent so long pining for this very touch. What’s going unsaid here is more than enough to be unsettling now, with how overbearing his feelings are getting and how desperate and cheery he’s sounding now. It’s a terrifying combination.
“I realised pretty quickly that it was your second playthrough. That I’d missed out on basking in you because I was too focused on saving Zelda,  but now I’m done with saving. I don’t want to go back to my own world, I don’t want to go back to her with how she’s always asking for more. I wish I could’ve just crawled through the screen and into your arms instead; burn away my past but I never could. I was stuck in that damned game, watching as you were so happy with me even though I wasn’t a person to you - just a toy. I could hear all the things you were saying from you complaining about your day, to how you kept calling me your precious baby girl.”
“Oh so… you heard everything… everything I was saying?”
“Everything. From the sweeter things like when you would apologize for me getting hurt even though I would never have held it against you, to how you thought I looked good in 'that green', how you'd let me do that to you as I finished off a skulltula, even how you thought ghirahim was fatherless. By far the best things to hear were you just talking about your own life, hearing you going on about your day made me feel more real than anything else did. I could imagine myself there with you, as a real part of your life.”
The chill down my spine at that admission didn’t go unnoticed by him as he coiled tighter into my side as if he was attempting for my touch to consume him fully. Like he’s gotten a taste of this touch and he’s wanting some more, like a hit of kerosene or something sweeter.
"I don't want to go back to how it was before [name], I can't go back to Skyloft. I don't ever want to be pulled apart from you again, because when you finished the game? it felt like nothing was worth anything any more. I'm convinced I would have been better off dead than how I was without you."
He seemed not to be fond of my stunned silence, even still he respected it, letting me have precious moments to gather my thoughts. To say what? Where would I begin with handling this? I can’t question him, he’s so fragile right now and I’m too scared to break him. Maybe just…
“I’m sorry, Sky I’m so sorry. I’m sorry that I didn’t know earlier… that I couldn't help you through all of that, that I didn't treat you like an actual person. Is there any way I could possibly make it up to you?"
If that wasn't the best worst thing to say then, I don't know what I could have said instead. Luckily he seemed to like it if how he’s burning himself further into my side is anything to go off of, proven more by the contented hum he’s let out.
“Please, just don’t leave me again - I- I won’t hold it against you if it's not your own choice, like how the shadow brought you here to me, but I never want to have to be apart from you again. I want to go back to your own world with you, a brand new life with you is all I need.”
“I promise link, I won’t leave you of my own choice from now.”
“If anything happens so that you get torn away from me - can you start a new save on your switch?”
“What..?”
What good could that be - what if it only made things worse? What if that got rid of his memories? No. [name] you have to trust him on this. He knows so much more about it, he’s the one who’s lived this. If that’s what he thinks the right option is. Then it’s the best option.
“If you make a new save then this time - this time I won’t have to be worried about you overreacting and deleting me - I don’t know if I’ll be able to talk to you -  There has to be some way I can get out of that game and into your arms again my dove. I just know it.”

yearnings
[✨ this was written for zelink week 2023 organised by @zelinkcommunity and is a companion piece to 'repast' and 'kin'] Fandom: The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Pairing: Link/Zelda Words: 1140
Despite all that time has taken from her, the Light Dragon can still recall names.
The skies in which she swims belong to Hyrule, and her sister dragons that she shares them with are Naydra, Farosh and Dinraal. Yet the Light Dragon no longer has a name, and her heart cries out in search of one — though she does not know why.
Each day at sunset, her sisters join her above the clouds. Sister, they say, come with us, to where the land meets the sky and where the mortal beings dwell. Each day, for many years, the Light Dragon cannot accept. She awaits another, one who will awaken on the Great Sky Island that she dutifully guards. This purpose, though its details are lost, burns within her.
When the swordsman finally awakens, the Light Dragon senses him immediately. She watches with muted curiosity as he begins to explore her island in the sky. Why had he come to this place? Were all the mortal beings so small? Soon she finds him on the ancient circular landing behind the island’s temple, and watches as the sword in his hand disappears in golden light. She is drawn to him then, called by a voice within: the swordsman must have a sword. Perhaps on the surface, where her sisters call to her, he will find another. Determined, the Light Dragon splits the clouds guarding the island from the world below. The swordsman does not wait; he leaps, surface bound. The Light Dragon follows.
The vast lands below swallow the swordsman whole. There are deep valleys that cut the earth and mountains that pierce the skies. There are churning rivers and yawning bays. There are open plains, marshy swamps, and rolling deserts. He must be out there, somewhere, and across all four corners of Hyrule the Light Dragon searches.
In winding canyons flooded with water, she meets her sister Farosh. Have you seen a swordsman? she asks. Farosh answers: None with valour and courage enough to impress me, sister.
Among rocky crags and cooled lava, in the shadow of a great volcano she meets her sister Dinraal. Have you seen a swordsman? she asks. Dinraal answers: Hyrule has seen many, sister, for blood flows here as easily as water flows to the sea.
Between gentle mountains, as snow feathers down, she meets her sister Naydra. Have you seen a swordsman? she asks. Naydra answers: Yes, he flies as we do, sister. I am sure he will visit you soon.
But he does not. The sorrow the Light Dragon feels at this is powerful and achingly fresh. Against her will, tears well in her eyes. She begs them not to fall; each time they do, they take more of her with them. She tries to hold on, and hold fast, but the tears fall anyway. The Light Dragon forgets why she was crying.
It is not long after this that he finds her. And it was as Naydra said; the swordsman could fly like the dragons, capturing the winds to soar through the sky. He lands softly on her back, his footsteps tickling, almost pleasant. Then he is holding onto her mane, holding very tight; is he worried he might fall? Then she can hear weeping. She hopes he is not unwell.
After some time, the swordsman speaks: “Is that really you, Zelda?”
She does not understand nor does she answer the question.
“Gods… you have the Master Sword. You’ve really had it all this time…”
Then he is moving, light feet padding about her mane. “Sorry, old girl, I’ve gotta take it from you.”
She is just thinking that she likes the gentle weight of him when a blinding pain rips through her head and down the length of her body. She lurches skyward, roaring, but the pain doesn’t stop, and it’s like something is tugging very hard on her head. It is not nice! Whatever it is should let go! It is her fur there! It keeps her warm! Let go! Let go!
The sky suddenly flashes white, and next she knows she is enveloped in clouds of shimmering gold. Calm washes through her and she relaxes, allowing herself to float. The swordsman is still there, murmuring: Hylia help me, I’m sorry. I didn’t know that’d hurt— Are you okay?
Yes, it is all going to be okay. She closes her eyes and recalls the final piece of her memories that had not yet slipped away; she has the sword, which she guarded much as she guarded her island in the sky. How this came to be, and why, is lost to her. But it is no matter. Her purpose is fulfilled. She is at peace.
After this, the swordsman visits her often. He brings her apples cooked in butter, which she eats even though she can’t really taste them, doing so because it seems to make him happy. Then he brings her flowers, threading them into her mane, which she likes for the soft pull of his fingers through her hair. Sometimes he comes to talk, telling stories of the surface, using words she doesn’t understand but enjoys for the sound of his voice. Sometimes he just comes to sit, clinging to her mane, always clinging.
Then, the last time he comes, she is sitting with him on top of the temple on the Great Sky Island, dozing. Her sisters have teased her for this. Sister beloved, what need does a dragon have for sleep? The swordsman sleeps, she has told them, and often sleeps for entire days. It seemed a pleasant activity to try, and she has found it helps her to enjoy the feeling of the sun on her back.
On this final day, she awakens to find the swordsman brushing her mane, running his hands through the strands.
“I have to go soon, Zelda,” he says. “I’ve stalled for a long time. I need to finish what you started.”
He has an apple in his hand, which she obligingly eats. “If I don’t come back, old girl, you know I love you, right? If there’s even a tiny bit of Zelda in there, I want her to know…”
Zelda. She yearns to understand this word. Is that a name? If it was, could it be hers? She does not know how to tell the swordsman this — that she can be his Zelda, if he wants. Instead she pushes her snout into his hand, nuzzling against him.
In response he wraps his arms around her, holding tight. At his back is a noble sword, in a scabbard of blue and gold. Then he lets go, runs a gentle hand across her fur one last time, and departs.
The Light Dragon Zelda returns to the sky, unmoved. He has left her before, and always returns.
Content to wait, she flies away free.

I’ve been meaning to make a post like this for a while now but kept forgetting. Since First isn’t widely known I wanted people to have an explanation of who the heck this guy is (and why they should love him). So without further ado
Who is the First Hero?
(All of the following pictures are from the Hyrule Historia)
The First Hero (or First as we call him in the Linked Universe fandom) shows up in a tiny manga at the back of the Hyrule Historia (that’s basically an encyclopedia for Zelda). He isn’t technically canon and doesn’t have a game of his own. But according to the manga he is the first Link, Skyward Sword Link’s predecessor.
He lived in a time when Hylia was still a goddess and before Demise’s first attack. He was a royal knight, much like Hyrule Warriors Link, and seemed to be a man of great respect and esteem. Until, that is, he was framed for an unknown crime and imprisoned.
Tumblr media
He remains in the dungeons for four years. Then, when his so called “premonitions of danger” begin to come true, and Demise attacks Hyrule, his people decide “oh, wait! They kinda need a hero now!” So, they set him free and practically beg him to fight for them. He’s understandably bitter about the whole thing, but being the hero he is, he goes out to battle.
Tumblr media
No sooner has he agreed to fight, than the goddess Hylia shows up on her crimson loftwing. She has come to battle Demise and help her people escape to safety.
The loftwing looks down upon the humans as weak and cowardly. But Link stands up to him, telling him “there are those among us who have the courage to fight.” The loftwing admires him for the sentiment, but isn’t convinced. He promises to keep watch over him to see if Link is a worthy rider.
With the loftwing gone to the heavens above, Hylia gives Link the Master Sword
Tumblr media
Link doesn’t think he is worthy of it after his imprisonment, but Hylia assures him that the sword knows better. It sees beyond his tarnished reputation to the kind, brave man beneath.
Though Link is still bitter about everything he has endured, he swears to fight for his friends. He takes the sword and hones it into something a mortal can wield.
Then, he goes to battle.
Hylia rallies the other races around Hyrule to help the Hylians. Meanwhile, Link and his men fight for seven days. Despite their efforts, Demise begins to burn Hyrule to the ground.
In the end, Link goes to face him, promising to slay him.
Tumblr media
But he is badly wounded in the fight. He collapses, weak and near death. Before he can fade away, however, the loftwing shows up and chooses him as his rider.
Tumblr media
He swears to ride with the loftwing forever. Shortly afterward, the dragons from Skyward Sword bless the Master Sword with the power of the Triforce. Then, Link gives the sword to Hylia, who carves Hyrule from the earth.
Link retrieves the sword and drives it into the ground, finishing the job and sending Hyrule skyward.
He wants to follow his people to the skies, but his wounds catch up to him. He falls to the ground. In his last moments he promises that his spirit will always be with his people.
Tumblr media
Hylia seals Demise away, even as the enraged god promises to prevail. Then, she goes to where her fallen hero lies.
She holds him, crying over him and lamenting the pain he had to endure to become the hero Hyrule needed. Knowing that Hyrule will need their help once more, she then promises to reincarnate them both. Only this time, she will be a mortal.
Tumblr media
This story, we learn, becomes legend in the era of Skyward Sword. And the loftwing who Link swore to ride with chooses the child who has his reincarnated spirit, Skyward Sword Link or Sky.
Tumblr media
Now, as for First’s standing in LU…I’m know multiple LU fans (myself included) speculate that Jojo will include him at some point. She’s been cryptic about it when asked though, so we don’t know for sure. Neither do we know when he’ll show up (if he does). So, for now, we can only hope.
…and create our own AU’s in the meantime ;)

The unspoken importance given to Farosh is driving me insane lol
The Hyrule compendium says Farosh is the “spirit of lightning” and that it “serves the Spring of Courage since ancient times”, it’s body being able to “cause lightning storms”.
Farosh can be found in both the surface and the depths, circling the Faron grasslands and the Gerudo desert.
There is the Dracozu lake, that gives into the spring of Courage and where you can find a piece of the charged outfit, that Rauru wears and that gives lightning powers to its wearer during thunderstorms, being obviously inspired by Farosh and “used in ancient rituals”. Link can also get the two other dragon outfits, but the charged outfit is the only that is given that much importance, through the quest with Tauro.
In the depths, behind the Wellspring of Courage’s waterfall, there is the Dracozu altar (the other two wellsprings don’t have altars), and just above, in the skies, you can find the Dragonhead island, which was hidden by a huge thunderstorm.
Then, there is the courage island, also shaped like a dragon, right above the Thundra plateau, where there is almost always a thunderstorm.
The two other challenge islands are the valor island and the bravery island, still dragon shaped and not wisdom and power themed at all (?).
The Zonai seemed to have their own equivalent of the triforce, kinda, with the imagery of the boar (power), the owl (wisdom), and the dragon (courage), and they seemed to give Farosh/courage/the figure of the dragon a great deal of importance as well (in the Typhlo ruins, the Thundra plateau etc etc).
The Zonai are also very obviously dragon people (most likely inspired by the Kirin, a chimerical creature from Chinese and Japanese mythology), and they’re the bearers of the secret stones, that can transform their wearers into, well, legit dragons.
So a part of me wonders if there is a link between Urbosa and Riju’s lightning powers and Farosh’s… And well, maybe the low-key Gerudo looking Ancient hero (eight heroine?) has something to do with it.
The south-west corner of the map, in the Gerudo desert, is also called the “dragon’s exile”, and right underneath, in the depths, you can find the huge dark skeleton.

Gifts [Linked Universe Four]
It started with a little white lie. Four should have known those don't end well for him.
One of the fic requests from this Post. It grows.
Masterlist
TW: None.
Disclaimer: Don't own The Legend of Zelda franchise. Linked Universe is the fan creation of jojo56830.
---
No matter what time he's thrown into. No matter where in the world Four's feet carry him. He can always count on the local Minish population to find him. It was simply the nature of the small race, to find and to hide small treasures in which the world above may in turn find and cherish.
And so, Four thought very little about accepting gifts from his small friends (his family). From every corner of Hyrule, across every small village and thriving metropolis, from the skies of Skyloft to the hilly slopes of Hateno, he accepting them all with open hands.
Shiny stones. Unusual seeds. Small pieces of metal. Colorful craps of cloth. Shells, amberfied bugs, bells, flowers, leather straps, hair ties, buttons, nuts, lost keys, dried herbs.
Little things. Lost things. Interesting things. And the list goes on and on. Anything the Minish found value in (even if the rest of the world didn't understand it), they would gift him, just as they gifted such things to each other. It was simply the way they lived, and Four had no problem indulging them a bit. It was such a small thing, hardly worth getting upset over even if he didn't always appreciate the small piles of accumulated gifts taking up prescious pack space.
It was such a small thing. He hadn't thought of the consequences when he'd lied.
"Hey! Why you've got all them things?" Wind asked as his usual curious self was prone to do, bright blue eyes shining with interest as he took in the pile of tiny odds and ends piled on Four's inn bed.
For his part, Four didn't think twice before replying. Didn't even bother to look up as he rooted around in his pack for his smithing tools. "I just like collecting things."
"Oh." Wind replied quietly, eyes taking on a contemplative shine.
Had Four noticed, he could have put a stop to everything before it even happened. If he'd have just looked up he would have caught the glimmer of delight that took home in Wind's eyes, the aura of intent radiating off the boy like an ill omen.
Had he been paying attention, he would have noticed the soft honey-brown curl of hair and equally soft hazel eyes staring in from the slight part of the door. And the piercing baby blue tucked in right below them, calculating in their ferocity.
But he didn't. He'd been focused on the task at hand and he'd forgotten himself. And more importantly, he'd forgotten about the enemy that was his brothers helpfulness.
He should have been known better.
And now he's paying the consequences for his inaction. And actions.
One would think the path to Four's misfortune was a slow, ominous slope overlooking a vast pit of good intentions. And in a way, it was.
Except the part where there would be explosions and rock slides and the crash of thunder closing in from all sides simultaneously down in those depths. The winds howling great swarms of debris and sand and dust, sweeping over it all in vast waves, racing up the sides of the steep slopes with fierce abandoned. Turbulent waters gushing from their banks and over the tops of mountains in torrents that brought down whole forests into the chaos.
In other words, it would be the very essence of his brothers' heavy handed affections given form in the shape of one minor observation and the lie that fanned that flame into an inferno.
And it started with Wind. Because it's always Wind. Of course.
He'd given Four sea shells. Three perfectly shaped ones in bright, smooth colors of white, blue and pink. Beautiful patterns of brown and silvery blue faintly etched into the bumps and rounded spikes spread across their glossy surfaces. One was big enough to hold up to his ear and (by Wind's reckoning) hear the ocean. The smallest fit at the very center of his palm, so small he could form a fist around it.
Four had been touched by the sweet gesture, and had smiled and ruffled the youngers hair. He'd put the gifts in his pack, just besides the collection he'd amassed from his Minish brethren, and that had been that.
Or so he'd thought.
Hyrule had come next, offering an assortment of oddly shaped seeds and a tiny apple (fully formed, just no bigger than a grape). From his own private collection, Hyrule had said shyly, blush high on his cheeks and on the tips of his ears. His mouth twisted into a bashful smile.
It was honestly a curiosity for Four, who had never even seen such seeds before (in any of their timelines), despite his Minish connections. So it was with genuine enthusiasm that he'd taken the small collection from his brother, fingering through them with open interest.
He hadn't thought to be suspicious of the silence that had enveloped the camp as he mumbled excitedly to himself about his newest gifts. Even going so far as to mime eating the tiny apple in one exaggerated bite, much to Hyrule's flustered delight.
The very next day, Warriors came to him with a rather stunning collection of coins. Most of which the smith had no idea which country (or even time) they came from, only that they were all immaculately polished and a few even looked to have been restored at some point. Most were in languages he didn't even understand. If they even were languages.
Confused by the gesture, but intrigued nonetheless, Four had thanked the Captain with a smile and a few questions as to the origins of some of the more outlandish ones. To which he promptly discovered Wars hadn't a clue, he just thought Four'd appreciate them more than himself.
The wording had been suspect to the small smith, but he'd let it go. Never look a gift horse in the mouth and all that.
He should have. It was like the flood gates had cracked open and all of his brothers suddenly wanted to ride the waves that were sure to follow.
Twilight had come to him during one of his  night watches and handed him a bag of something relatively heavy and metallic sounding. It turned out to be horseshoes. Or, more precisely, it was a collection of horseshoe shaped items that came in all shapes, sizes and materials.
When questioned, Twilight explained that he's seen Four forging some at Lon Lon Ranch and thought he'd be interested in the different types of experimental shoes he'd collected during his lifetime of husbandry. There were even some for deer, much to Four's befuddlement.
Right on the heels of that odd exchange, Sky had approached him with a whole set of little wooden weapon's models piled onto his palm. One for each weapon type he'd seen used by the chain, Sky had explained, handing them over to the confused smith with a tired smile.
And it was quite the collection indeed. Swords, hammers, whips, boomerangs, bombs and any number of items Four had never though he'd see translated so well into small wooden replicas. Even the bow looked delicate and ornately detailed, the string shape so fine he feared it would break at the slightest brush of wayward breeze.
Four hadn't had the time to question why before Sky had stumbled back to his bedroll and was out like a light.
Legend had come next, looking as surly as ever (though shy too, which was nearly as uncomfortable for Four as it clearly was for him). He'd tossed down a bag of something heavy next to the smith, told him he had no use for them but he'd heard the smith enjoyed things like these, and then stomped away.
They were rocks. Or, more precisely, they were magical stones. Not quite concentrated or powerful enough to be the center piece of any enchanted jewelry, but they were beautiful nonetheless. Most took the form of minor gems or unusually colored or textured pebbles.
Not that Four was ungrateful, but the whole encounter was very, very odd. If somewhat useful. Utilized correctly, these could be used for some light enchanting practice.
Time had sat next to him during one of their extended break times some days later and started pulling out empty bottles from his pack one after the other. Most were so miniscule Four hadn't even realized what they were at first. The smallest being barely the length of his thumb nail, though a few were nearly the width of his palm.
A collection he'd been keeping around in case they may one day be useful, Time had explained, his one eye shining with merriment (mirth, Four thought, but dismissed it. for surely he'd misread the slight pull of his eldest brother's lips).
Very confused, but accepting the bottles being handed to him nonetheless, Four finally asked. "That's fascinating and all, but why are you giving these to me?"
"Oh?" Time had hummed, eye twinkling (with mirth, Four's mind whispered again). "Wind told us about how you enjoy collecting things like these." His eye seemed to take an almost fey quality then as he handed Four the last bottle. "And that you were growing quite the collection already. So, we thought we'd contribute."
Four almost opened his mouth to question, before it finally clicked.
He had said that, hadn't he. At the inn when he was trying to keep Wind from asking too many questions.
"Well," Four began, somewhat nervously. "I just-"
"Hey!" Wild interrupted as he came bounding up to the pair with a wide smile, slate in hand. "I got some stuff for your collection, Four!"
Four didn't have time to speak before Wild was opening his Sheikah slate and out came...
Everything. Everything and nothing at all. Just piles and piles of any conceivable (and inconceivable) thing that anyone could just pick up off the ground in a fit of fancy. Stacks so high Four had to crank his head back to stare wide-eyed at the still growing piles. Objects so outlandish a few seemed to be (pulsing? beating? moving?) imbued with unknown magic.
It just kept coming, much to Four's growing horror. Until blessedly it stopped, and there Wild stood before it all, hands on his hips and a smug, beaming expression on his face so bright it could blot out the sun.
"Voila! I gathered everything I could find for you! Now you'll have all the weird stuff you could possibly need!" He rasped in that scratchy voice of his, turning his head in a near circle to take in the rest of the chain with an air of victory so pungent it smelt of bokobline guts. (No, wait. Those pulsing things are bokobline guts.)
A moment of silence, until Time broke it. "Well?" He asked the smith kindly (deviously).
Four's brain scrambled to come up with something, anything to salvage the situation. But when Wild's expression dimmed and he started to fidget uncertainly, Four's mouth was moving before his rational thinking could intercept.
"Thank you, Wild! I was just shocked you took an interest is all! It caught me by surprise!"
And the beaming smile was back, along with a rasped. "Of course I'd be interested! I even got you the most, because I love you the most!"
'Oh. Oh no!' Four's eyes darted around at the rest of the chain, and sure enough there it was. Sky was looking contemplative, Hyrule just as much so as he looked at the acorns littering the ground. Wars had that competitive gleam in his eyes, Wind looking just as fired up by the declaration and Legend had a stubborn glare that spoke of many bad things for Four's future (and pack space, damned hoarder).
And it was at that moment that Four realized that he was staring over the edge of a steep, steep slope. And far below that slope were the smiling, loving faces of his brothers ready to bring the unfathomable chaos that was the helpful nature of eight Goddess ordained heroes.
And all Four could think as the hands of fate tilted and he was sent spiraling into the chaos was.
'Maybe they're secretly Minish kin too!'
'Shut up, Red.'

Back to the shadows for now.

I have opinions about TotK. This is your spoiler warning if you haven't played/finished it yet. Also all of this is, once again, just my opinion on it and not a decisive fact! I will probably misremember things!
Anyway.
Okay so basically as someone who got it on release and beat it within a week, I'm a little underwhelmed by the game now that I'm looking back over half a year later.
It's not a terrible game! I'll say that first and foremost. But after waiting so long for it, and trying so hard to not hype myself up for it (failing horribly at that), it feels just a bit... same-y. The story is nice, and it's different. The boss fights and abilities you gain during your travels are nice. Everything else, though...
I like the map having stayed similar, with enough changes that I have to relearn some areas. The Depths are really fucking cool, and figuring out on my own that they're a negative of the overworld was incredible! But the sky islands were a little disappointing, I think. When we were told we'd be in the sky a lot, I thought there'd be more large islands like the tutorial one that you could walk around on. More references to Skyward Sword, too. It feels to me that they put more love into the Depths than the sky, in a way.
I like the main story. Figuring out Zelda was the Light Dragon (but not really believing it until the final Tears), and that she'd essentially spent thousands and thousands of years trapped inside herself, was AWESOME. Every cutscene involving her as the Light Dragon hit me hard, and I felt genuine sorrow everytime I saw her floating around the sky.
...That being said, I DO wish we could have a game where you get to actually travel with her. I WANT her to tell me about the minor lore of the world! I want to know about the various flora and fauna, and I want her to talk about Hyrule's history! Zelda is part of the royal family, and I'd imagine that part of her studies pre-BotW she'd have to learn about the history of her family (especially because of the importance of the Goddess' blood...). With how pre-BotW went between her and her powers, and her and her father, I'd imagine she'd make it a point to learn more about their history that ISN'T just the prophecy.
I, personally, did not like most of the temple boss fights. I can't really explain much of why- except for Queen Gibdo. I HATED Queen Gibdo because of all the smaller Gibdo chasing you, trying to chase down Riju for her power... It was a lot of things stacked on each other, and simply not my thing. Colgera was an absolute favorite however! The boss theme is AWESOME, the mechanics of being in the air and having to watch for projectiles, as well as crashing through the ice sheets to take it down? VERY, VERY FUN. Climbing through the sky just to get to the temple itself was one of my favorite experiences. Going up and up and up, and finally reaching the top where you break out above the storm clouds and see clear skies...
A thing that bothers me about the temples is that the cutscene at the end, where the ancient Sages gifts their powers to the new ones... I feel like they could've spent a little more time making them different, even if that meant more time in development. I would be okay with that! I think games should be in development longer in order to produce a good, finished product! Anyway.
The fight with Ganondorf was fun for me. I get SUPER immersed in it, so it was a fearful moment when I thought I'd beaten him, only to see his health bar fill again... and then go offscreen. And the DEMON DRAGON FIGHT? Holy SHIT.
I just wish there was more... substance to the game, I guess? It feels weird saying that. There are more things to do, but it's missing something I can't name. Something BotW had, but is now gone. I like TotK, like I said. It's clearly had love put into it, and I'm glad the developers spent more time on getting it as close to the perfect image they wanted as they could. Maybe it's just cause I've spent more time with BotW (over 300 hours), but I think I'm a little biased towards it. Maybe I'm just getting older and grumpier about vidya games, too. Who knows!
If you read all this, cool! I will reiterate that this is simply my view on it! If your view is different, good!! I'm happy to know there are people out there who enjoy it more than I did. Or if you hate it more than I do, maybe you have other things you want to point out about it that I missed.

Hello peoples
I really loved this post by @walrus-tusk-615bc and it inspired me to draw up some dragon noodles of my own so here we goooo
I very much love the idea of there being one "secret stone dragon" for each race in Hyrule so imagine an AU in which these guys are roaming about :3 Also BOTW and TOTK were my first Zelda games ever so don't come at me for lore stuff I'm just a wee baby in a green tunic ._.
The Golden Dragon of the Gerudo
Tumblr media
Gender: Male
Description: The Golden Dragon can be seen soaring above the Gerudo Desert and Highlands. Rumors of legend suggest that the very first Gerudo King swallowed a secret stone and has continued to watch over the Gerudo people ever since.
Fuse Ability: Parts from the Golden Dragon will grant the base weapon its highest "Attack Up" boost.
The Earth Dragon of the Goron
Tumblr media
Gender: Male
Description: The Earth Dragon's presence keep the land rich with precious minerals. It will emerge from lava lakes the night before a Blood Moon and slowly traverse Death Mountain. After 24 hours, it will burrow back underground.
Fuse Ability: Parts from the Earth Dragon (that aren't gemstones) will grant weapons the one-hit rock smash.
The Great Sea Dragon of the Zora
Tumblr media
Gender: Female
Description: The Great Sea Dragon guards the waters of Hyrule and only rises from the ocean depths at night. Should Link come near, it will graciously keep its back above the waves.
Fuse Ability: Parts from the Sea Dragon will grant weapons the ability to create whirlpools during charged attacks, but will rapidly deplete stamina.
The Dragon Bird of the Rito
Tumblr media
Gender: Female
Description: The Dragon Bird can be found gliding above the clouds of the Tabantha Frontier, a beacon of blessing to all who visit the skies. It will roost upon the mountainous perch of Rito Village, though this is an extremely rare occurrence.
Fuse Ability: Parts from the Dragon Bird will grant weapons the ability to create powerful updrafts during charged attacks.
~ BONUS ~
(Spoiler for the end of the game!)
Since Zelda is canonically no longer the Light Dragon, that leaves the Hylians without a dragon (that is, if the three original dragons were indeed Zonai). So I made another one for funsies :3 I haven't decided if this dragon is Link from another time or another ancient hero or soldier but I do like the mystery soooo yeah!
The Hero Dragon of the Hylians
Tumblr media
Gender: Male
Description: The Hero Dragon can be seen circling the skies of Hyrule Field. It is said to watch over travelers and adventurers, the sight of it alone strengthening their hearts and determination.
Fuse Ability: Parts from the Hero Dragon will grant weapons maximum durability.
:D I love the dragonnnssss

Wild was unfortunately used to the perils of fire. At least it wasn’t his fault this time. The combination of weird shapeshifting keese and weirder bird-people spitting fire everywhere had been a recipe for disaster from the beginning.
Wild wasn’t familiar with these monsters. Initially, he had thought the bird-people might be rito, but the first fireball had quickly squashed that idea. Still, the thought of fighting something that reminded him of his friends in his own era made something in his chest clench uncomfortably, so he quickly decided to leave them to the others and focus on the keese himself. Twilight had soon joined him. It took an embarrassingly long time to realize it was only the red ones that transformed, but after that they made short work of them, leaving only the ordinary ones to deal with.
Twilight ducked away to go help Wind and Legend where they were harrying one of the bird-people. Wild continued thinning out the swarm of keese. It had been a long time since he had seen so many in one place, and he was remembering why he hated them now. Picking them off one at a time as they zigzagged erratically was annoying at the best of times. One of them dove for his face, and he knocked it away with his bow, scowling.
Finally, there were only a few keese left. Ignoring them for the moment, Wild assessed the rest of the battlefield. He frowned at the small fires all around. The dry grass and dead leaves were good kindling, so it wouldn’t take long at all for the flames to spread. He grimaced, remembering all the wildfires he had accidentally started his first few weeks after waking up.
There was only one of the bird-monsters left. Sky and Warriors were dancing around it, exhaustion and frustration making their usually graceful strikes slower. Legend was starting to head in their direction, but Wild decided to save him the trouble. Just another monster, he thought firmly. Aiming carefully, he released an arrow and pegged the bird-monster in the eye. It screeched, tossing its head back. Sky finished it off.
Wild made his way to where the other heroes stood. Hyrule was explaining, “I think all these monsters are from my world. This doesn’t look like my era, though. Do you think the Shadow brought them here? They weren’t with him when we followed him through the last gate…”
There were still a few keese making half-hearted attempts to swoop down on them. Wild took the opportunity to shoot the last of them down, listening to the others’ discussion with half an ear.
As soon as Sky and Warriors made it to them, Time was briskly giving instructions and they were on their way. Wild paused to pull out a fireproof elixir and take a swig. He equipped his great frostblade, hoping that it would help cancel out some of the heat from the flames.
Sky and Four walked next to him. As far as Wild could tell, the Smithy had nothing for the fire, but he was pretty sure Sky had mentioned something about his red earrings helping. As they drew closer, sweat beaded on Four’s forehead. Wild drew his frostblade and kept it between him and the flames. The faint chill wafting off it seemed to bring some relief, as Four smiled gratefully.
The fire had grown above the height of Time’s head. Legend stepped forward and sprayed ice in a wide swath, protecting the gap in the flames. The ice melted almost immediately, but the wet leaves sputtered out. The heroes quickly began shuffling through. Legend guarded the gap, waiting for everyone else to pass. As Wild passed him, his eyes widened, and he called, “Sky!”
Wild whipped around. He hadn’t noticed Sky falling behind, but sure enough, he was a couple spear lengths away, bent over and coughing. Wild kicked himself for not paying attention. They had all noticed Sky occasionally had difficulty breathing. He’d mentioned once that it was worse on the Surface, where the air pressure was higher than he was used to. It wasn’t surprising that he would be more sensitive to all this smoke.
Wild nodded to Legend and ran to help. He had taken three steps when a familiar poof had him stumbling to a halt. A cloud of bright red smoke, the Yiga crest glowing in the center, had appeared in his path. Before it had faded, a column of wind came hurtling toward him and he leapt to the side, calling in warning, “Ambush!”
There were shouts behind him, followed by the sounds of clashing steel. Wild snarled at the Yiga blademaster now facing him and dashed forward. He swung the frostblade in a heavy charged attack, carving a deep gash into the blademaster’s armor above their hip. They retaliated faster than he’d anticipated, knocking him back with a wild swing of their windcleaver before teleporting. The frostblade flew out of his hands. Wild landed flat on his back. He hissed in pain, bringing a hand to his chest where the blade had sliced through his tunic at a shallow angle.
Another puff of smoke. Wild rolled to the side, narrowly avoiding losing his head. The blademaster grunted in frustration as they tried to yank their sword from where it was embedded in the ground. Wild took advantage of their distraction to scramble to his feet, drawing his bow and nocking an arrow, almost fumbling it in his hurry. They looked up and cursed, teleporting just as he loosed his arrow. The windcleaver remained.
A cry made Wild jerk his head up. He caught a glimpse of a skull wreathed in flames, the Master Sword on the ground—
—and Sky, held by a second blademaster, an expression of frozen surprise on his face before they both disappeared in an explosion of crimson smoke and paper slips.
~~~
The Yiga left as quickly as they had appeared.
Wild felt as if he were underwater, every movement and thought slowed as he fought the current. Sky had been right there. The Yiga had separated them purposefully, keeping Wild occupied while they took down Sky, and then they had taken him. He was gone. It was all Wild’s fault.
Eventually voices penetrated the fog over his senses. Hands gently grasped his where they were tangled in his hair, tugging. The stinging sensation finally registered. Wild took a shaky breath and forced his fingers to uncurl.
Twilight’s face swam into view. His lips moved. The sounds finally resolved into words.
“—ild, shhh, shh, it’s going to be okay. This isn’t over. We’ll get him back, Wild. But we’re gonna need your help, alright? Link, can you hear me?”
With an effort, Wild nodded. Twilight’s shoulders slumped and he pulled Wild into a hug.
“It’s going to be okay,” he repeated. He sounded like he was trying to convince himself as much as Wild.
Once the fog had mostly dissipated, Wild wriggled out of Twilight’s hold and looked around. He and Twilight were sitting on the ground. A short distance away, the windcleaver still stuck out of the dirt like a pointy tripping hazard. Beyond it lay Wild’s great frostblade and the Master Sword.
Wild got to his feet and retrieved the frostblade, sliding it back into his bag. Then he stiffly walked to the Master Sword. He hesitated, then pushed past the memory of pain—fear and equal determination—this time for sure to reach down and pick it up. The hilt seemed to vibrate in his hand.
Wild returned to where Twilight stood watching with an odd expression on his face. Wild wordlessly handed him the sword. They both contemplated the wall of fire now separating them from the rest of the Chain.
Wild wondered distantly when that had happened. Legend had been on this side with him and Sky when the Yiga attacked, but he must have been drawn to the other side to aid the others in the fight. Wild recalled uneasily that the rest of them had been in the middle of passing through the gap in the flames. Probably Legend’s ice rod had been needed. Twilight must have come before the gap closed, since he didn’t have any fireproof gear on.
Now, however, the towering flames were unbroken, encircling them in all directions and coming closer by the second. They needed to move.
Wild unhooked the Sheikah Slate from his belt and navigated to the runes. He selected the newest icon and said loudly, “Hey, Wind? Sailor, can you hear me?”
There was a tense silence, then Wind’s voice came through. “Wild! You guys are okay!” A fuzzy rendition of his face appeared on the smooth surface of the slate.
Wild relaxed. The next moment, dread washed through him as he realized the others might not have seen what happened. Should he tell them…?
Twilight’s hand on his shoulder stopped him. Leaning forward, Twilight asked, “How ‘bout y’all?”
Sounding a bit reluctant, Wind admitted, “I got a little burned. I’m okay, though, really. These guys are just making a fuss.” Warriors said something in the background, his exasperated tone coming through. “Anywayyyy, Warriors got cut, and Legend is limping a little, but he says he just landed wrong and he can walk fine. Nothing a bit of potion can’t fix. It can wait.” There was a pause, in which Wild could hear the faint roar of the fire through Wind’s stone. Wind’s mouth scrunched up in thought. “Hey, um, how are we supposed to get through to you guys?”
That was a very good question.
Wild inched closer to the fire. Maybe they could use Twilight’s clawshots to climb a tree? He looked around, scanning for any with branches reaching across the barrier, but they were all aflame. His paraglider might be able to get a lift from the hot air, but it could only carry one. In a pinch, he could try shield-launching himself using the explosion from a bomb, but even he could admit that was risky; there was no way Twilight would go for it. Fireproof elixir wouldn’t protect him from deliberately walking into fire. What did he have that could put out fire?
He must have said that last part out loud, because Wind answered, “Maybe Legend’s ice rod will be enough. Do you have anything like that?”
Wild considered that. Did he still have that blizzard rod? He opened his bag and dug around. Lizal spear, traveler’s claymore, boko club, farming hoe (oops, thought I’d returned that), cobble crusher…
With a noise of triumph, he finally withdrew the blizzard rod. Delicate cracks webbed the surface. It probably wouldn’t last more than a few blasts before shattering, so he would have to make it count.
“Yeah, I’ve got a few more shots left with my blizzard rod. It works about the same as Legend’s, I think. Should we just try making a path?”
Wind turned away. There was muffled discussion on his end, then Legend’s face replaced Wind’s on the screen. “The fire has probably evaporated most of the water in the air on your side, so this might not be as effective as we’d like, but it’s the best idea we’ve got. Do you remember where we are in relation to you?”
Wild examined the direction he thought was right. There was no sign now that there had ever been ice there, but Twilight was looking in the same direction, so he replied, “I think so. Close enough, anyway.”
Legend shook his head, and said, sounding agitated, “No, close enough won’t cut it. We’ve got one shot at this. Here, look for my arrow.” He moved off screen.
Wild obediently lowered the slate and stepped back. A moment later, a flash of color caught his eye, and he watched an arrow with a crimson ribbon tied to the shaft fly almost straight up, about four spear lengths from where he had been looking. Fixing that position in his mind, he said into the slate, “Okay, got it.”
“Ready?” asked Legend.
Wild hastily shook his head, forgetting Legend couldn’t see him. “Hang on, give me a second.”
Hooking the slate back on his belt, he dove into his pouch and withdrew the half-full bottle of fireproof elixir. He shoved it into Twilight’s hands and said, “Drink that.” Without waiting for a response, he shoved his arm into his bag up to his armpit and pulled out the Flamebreaker helm. He yanked it over his head. No time for more; the fire was almost at their heels. Twilight looked conflicted for a second before tossing back the elixir in one gulp. He pocketed the empty bottle.
Wild tapped the slate, glad he had foregone the bulky gauntlets of the Flamebreaker armor, and told Legend, “Okay, we’re ready.”
“Go.”
On Legend’s signal, Wild swept the blizzard rod in a tight arc before him. Freezing air burst from the end, parting the flames. Almost immediately, they started creeping back in. Wild cautiously advanced, swinging the rod in front of him in a continuous motion. This time, a spray of ice came forth, extinguishing the flames. With Twilight close on his heels, he pressed on as quickly as he dared. It felt like hours, but it couldn’t have been more than a few minutes before a spray of ice almost froze his boots and the glowing blue tip of Legend’s rod came into view. Legend lowered it and gestured them onward, then resumed clearing the path as he carefully backtracked the way he’d come. Wild shifted to guarding their back.
The blizzard rod broke just as they cleared the fire. Twilight ran forward into the clear sunlight, panting and patting himself down for stray sparks. Wild followed, only slightly less eager to be out. He removed the Flamebreaker helm and wiped sweat from his face.
From this side, the scope of the inferno was clearer. It stretched almost the length of Tarrey Town, he would have guessed, consuming all in its path. There was no way they could put it out on their own. In any case, they had another priority now.
As if reading his thoughts, Warriors suddenly asked, “Where’s Sky?”
Wild felt the weight of all eyes fall on him. His shoulders hunched and he found he couldn’t meet anyone’s gaze as he answered, “They took him. He’s gone.”
There was a frozen silence. Then chaos erupted.
“What? Why?!” burst out Wind.
“Who were those guys?” Legend demanded.
“How did they find us? Were they working with those monsters?” wondered Hyrule.
Warriors’ boots stopped in front of Wild. “Champion, tell us everything you know. What happened?”
Wild straightened and fixed his gaze somewhere past Warriors’ left ear. He dully reported, “Sky fell behind because the smoke made him cough. I went to help him. The Yiga appeared. They split us up. While I was fighting one, they disarmed Sky and took him. I don’t know where they went. I don’t know why they took him instead of me.”
Warriors asked, “The Yiga? Is this your world after all?”
Wild unhooked the Sheikah Slate and opened the map. The screen showed only the empty outline of the borders of Hyrule, as if he had never filled it in. He tilted it toward Warriors. “Not my time. Though I suppose it could be my world from when I was asleep.” The thought that there could be two of him right now, that somewhere nearby his own body might lie on the brink of death, sent a shudder through him. “I don’t think the Yiga were very active until I woke up, though. Zelda and I have always been their targets.”
Warriors tapped his chin with his hand. “Why would that suddenly change? Could they have figured out who we all are? How did they get here in the first place, though?”
Twilight interrupted in a strained voice, “Can we take this elsewhere?”
They all turned. Wild had somehow forgotten about the wildfire. While they had all been distracted, it had continued to grow, moving toward them at an unnaturally slow pace. Wild wondered if that had something to do with the type of fire the monsters spewed. Those fireballs had been strangely red.
With a keen-eyed glance at Twilight, Time nodded and said, “We’ll learn nothing more standing here. We need a better vantage point.”
Four suggested, “The trees thin south of here and the ground slopes up, so we should try that direction first.”
“Good plan. The fire can’t be helped, but it might burn itself out at the rate it’s spreading. Let’s get moving,” said Warriors.
They resumed walking. Away from the flames, the air was pleasantly cool. Winter was on the wind. Wild saw a couple of squirrels scampering through the trees, but any desire to hunt was quelled by the sick feeling in his gut as he remembered the look on Sky’s face before the Yiga teleported away. Had he been hurt? Was he hurting now? What were their plans for him?
Wild was so caught up in his circling thoughts that he almost bumped into Legend’s back when they stopped. They now stood on a rise looking down over a valley of ruins. For a brief moment, he thought they might be his, but then he realized there was nothing familiar about the landscape or the architectural style. To the west, the grasslands gave way to desert plateau. To the east, beyond the valley, Wild could see the edge of a large lake with an island in its center.
“Oh.”
Wild turned to see Legend looking back the way they had come. Beyond the trees, just east of where they had been all morning, the blue-tipped spires of a castle could be seen. “This is my world. Sort of, at least,” Legend said. “I have a funny feeling I’m not around anymore.”
Sounding curious, Warriors asked, “What makes you say that?”
Legend pointed to the section of forest directly south of the castle. “I would never let my orchard get that overgrown.”
They all took that bit of information in. How strange would it be, Wild wondered, to see what Hyrule looked like after you were gone? None of the others seemed to come after him in the timeline, so he had never been past his own present.
Twilight spoke up. “Should we head for the castle? See if they’ve heard anything?”
Legend made a face but nodded. “That might be our only lead. They could have taken Sky anywhere, and we’d waste precious time wandering around.”
Wild looked over the valley again. This world wasn’t as big as his, but it was still a lot of ground to cover when they didn’t know what was happening to Sky.
No, he couldn’t think like that. They had captured Sky alive, even though they’d always tried to kill Wild on sight. There had to be a reason.
Wild rolled his shoulders and winced as the cut from the windcleaver stung. He’d completely forgotten about it in the aftermath. It didn’t look like anyone else had noticed, so he reached into his pouch to grab a hearty elixir. A quick swallow would probably take care of it.
His hand brushed a piece of paper. He pulled it out, curious.
His heartbeat thundered in his ears. He was holding one of the red paper slips the Yiga left behind when they teleported. One side was emblazoned with the inverted Sheikah eye. He flipped it over. The other side had writing.
We have your friend, Champion. You have until moonrise to challenge us for him. If you do not appear by then, we will assume him worthless to you and execute him. We will be waiting on the island in the lake. Come alone.
Wild stared at the paper in his hand, fear and fury and guilt swirling within him. They had kidnapped Sky to get to Wild. He’d outwitted them one too many times, and now they were forcing his hand. If he didn’t go, they would kill Sky. If he went, they would kill him and might kill Sky for good measure. No matter what he chose, he lost.
There really was no choice though. He had to go, or they would make good on their threat. He could slip away from the group, get in before the Yiga expected him, and get Sky out before they were any wiser. Maybe he could—
“What’s that?” asked Hyrule, peering over his shoulder. Wild froze. The urge to shove the note back into his pouch warred with his sudden certainty that he couldn’t do this on his own. He wrestled with himself silently. Hyrule waited, patiently perplexed.
Finally, Wild sighed, shoulders slumping, and gave in. “I know where Sky is,” he said loudly.
The others’ conversations halted. Time asked urgently, “Where?”
Wild handed him the red paper slip and watched him read it, expression stormy. Their written languages all differed slightly, enough to make comprehension tricky, so Wild explained to the rest of the group, “I found this in my pouch just now. The Yiga have Sky on the island in that lake over there. They said if I don’t come by tonight, they’ll kill him.”
Wind cried, “Well, what are we waiting for? Let’s go rescue him!”
Wild shook his head. Time explained, eye still locked on the paper, “They said Wild has to come alone.”
All the wind went out of Wind’s sails. “Oh. I guess that means we can’t come…Wait, aren’t those the guys that want to kill you, Wild? You can’t go! There’s gotta be another way!” He turned to Legend and asked, “You know this world, right? What’s on that island? Is there a way we could sneak in?”
Legend looked apprehensive, but responded, “In my time, it held the House of Gales, a wind-themed dungeon I had to go through to get the Pendant of Wisdom. It’s got lots of rooms and levels. The Yiga are probably guarding the entrances. I would guess they’re keeping Sky in the final boss room, since it’s the hardest to get to, up on the third floor. Hm…”
Legend crouched down. He picked up a stick, broke off a piece the length of a quill, and began to draw in the dirt. He whacked Warriors’s boot when he got in the way, and they all backed up a bit to give the Vet more room. A map began to take shape.
“We’ll need to split up, and there will be swimming involved, but I think we can make this work. Who’s got stealth items?”
i'm playing tears of the kingdom for the second time right now and i had issues with the story the first time, those aren't gone. However, playing it this time i am convinced that the memories in the tears actively work against the tension, confusion, and overall dread it seems nintendo wanted us to feel about Zelda's whereabouts. we follow the puppet up the castle grounds after completing the regional phenomena, and in-game it seems we're supposed to believe that as Link we are following Zelda. that we're supposed to be worried about her. But i've already seen the memories at this point, i know this Zelda isn't Zelda. I know she's a dragon in the skies above me. there is no tension here, she's some creature of Ganon's and must be, because he's done this before in the memories.
However, if we'd just had the sightings of Zelda in the regional phenomena, perhaps even as cutscenes to show her in a more convincing way and not just oh on the other side of the screen where we cannot speak to her. Then i may have felt more tension. If it had played up this question of: did Zelda really disappear in a spark of yellow light, or did she fall into the Demon King's clutches somehow instead? Did she fall into the abyss and was broken by his mind games deep, deep below the world? Was she corrupted somehow? She sure seems to be working for evil in the her that we see in the present, and i think it would've been cool to see more of that and less of oh she's safe in the past! oh wait no she's a dragon. but! she's not this Zelda in the present cause we already know what happened.
And sure, it's an open world game with no set linearity. Sure! However, even before i got all the memories, just getting one solved my "where's Zelda? should I be worried about her?" thoughts. she was in the past. millennia or so well behind where i was, why should i worry about her? i don't know the rest of the story yet but like, if she can magically transport to hyrule's founding she's not a pressing concern as much as the blizzard in hebra, or the sand shroud in gerudo, or the poisoned water in zora's domain (addiction is not magically solved except in stories, so like, i wasn't worried about the gorons as much as just horrified by their glowing eyes. the solution there is more structural support but lol that's boring so it's magically not a problem and there's no withdrawl after you 'solve' that area). Anyway. maybe you don't get any memories during the main quest, maybe you do all four regions and go up to the castle and you've seen none. why not make them something that unlocks after a certain point? perhaps the glyphs only show up after zelda's puppet is revealed and you get a cutscene with dragon zelda ascending up like she did at the start of the game, only tears fall and the glyphs appear and then you go and find out where she is.
but either way all of this hinges on Zelda being a completely different person to the Zelda we know. Zelda we know is a amateur researcher, she keeps notebooks all over her study, she keeps notebooks in her new home. if we can keep notes by way of quests and such in the pad, she would have as well. even if she couldn't, if she entrusted the pad to the steward why not a notebook or some stone slate that she leaves for Link saying: i can see no other choice. To get your sword back to you with the power it needs to defeat the Demon King, i must do the unimaginable and become an immortal dragon. the Zonai say it is irreversible, but you we've done the impossible before. Link, i leave you my research i could find into this process. Please. Find a way to change me back. As if researcher Zelda who is so excited by the reliefs we find at the start of the game wouldn't have kept her own records, wouldn't have noted her choices down, and wouldn't have found a way to leave this to Link without being stupidly vague, not when she spent her entire childhood attempting to tap into a magical power that she was vaguely told would probably, maybe, should awaken due to prayer.
long and the short is: memories ruin the game tension, but the overall premise of "where's zelda" makes no sense with the zelda we have in these two games
Finding Her - final chapter
Tumblr media
Link makes notes, takes photos and keeps time on his quest across Hyrule, in the hopes of finding Zelda and staying sane until he does. [ Previous | First | AO3 ] with artwork by @nocturnalfandomartist at the end!
A photograph of Hyrule Castle seated on a rocky mesa of petrified Gloom. Where once malice and corruption rose high into the air, there is nothing but clear skies.
A photograph of the rolling meadows of Hyrule Field, with Lookout Landing approaching just over the next hill. Ahead of the camera walks a woman wearing traditional garb, her short golden hair still a little damp.
A photograph of a group of Sheikah, young and old, at the gates of Lookout Landing as they greet the golden-haired woman. Their arms are outstretched towards her, tears in their eyes.
A photograph of the five Sages of Hyrule, crowded around the woman as they draw her into a group embrace. The woman has her back to the camera as a young Gerudo vai hugs her tightly.
The same picture as above, only now the woman has turned to the photographer. She smiles, surrounded by her friends and allies. Despite the weariness on her face, she radiates warmth and contentment. She is finally home.
1. BATTLE IN THE SKIES: A SPECIAL LUCKY CLOVER GAZETTE REPORTby Penn of Rito Village (Guest Correspondent)
26th Satorember 104AC
The citizens of Hyrule were treated to an extraordinary sight yesterday after what appeared to be an enormous, demonic dragon emerged from the ruins of Hyrule Castle.
It was approximately midday when what is being dubbed the ‘Demon Dragon’ appeared. Eyewitness accounts state that a second entity, which some have called the ‘Light Dragon’, was also spotted and appeared to confront the Demon Dragon, however this has not been verified.
About an hour after the Demon Dragon appeared, there was a colossal explosion in the skies that caused several grassfires on Hyrule Field. These were swiftly contained by brave volunteers of the Zonai Survey Team who happened to be in the area. The Gazette can confirm there were no ground casualties.
Earlier this week, the swordsman Link and the Sages of Hyrule departed Lookout Landing to mount an assault on the Demon King Ganondorf. The outcome of that battle is not yet known, and investigations continue as to whether this mission has any links to the Demon Dragon.
More to come.
2. A letter, with a stamp that reads ‘Rito Courier Certified’
Link,
Forgive the chicken scratch, I don’t write a lot of letters.
I heard the Princess is back. Good for her. Knew she wouldn’t abandon us. Good job dealing with the Demon King too -- you saved all our tailfeathers there.
Tulin’s back with us now. Just writing to say thank you. He’s got a long way to go, but I can tell that hanging out with some responsible adults has put him on the right track. Though sometimes I wish he’d never learned about this Sage business. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve heard ‘Would a Sage have to do his chores, Dad?’ Ridiculous.
If either you or the Princess need a holiday, Rito Village welcomes you. I’d sure like to hear the story of the battle against Ganondorf from someone other than a cocky teenager. Let’s just hope that’s the last of Hyrule’s troubles for now. We all enjoy a good fight, now and then, but a broken wing never really heals if you know what I mean.
Fly well, Teba, Elder of Rito Village
Link! Zelda!
Look at this! Isn’t it great!? We got it back from the Lucky Clover Gazette just today. Took a bit of negotiating with Traysi to let us use her printers, but we got it done. I can’t believe Mine-Cart Land is gonna open for real — it’s all thanks to you or we’d all be Demon King lunch!
The other Sages said you’d gone back to Hateno to rest. They’ve all got fire ants in their pants wanting to get back to rebuilding, but I say we’ve all deserved a break. How many people can say they saved the world twice?
Anyway, let us know next time you’re in Eldin. Slergo and Offrak have been asking about you every day. Dinner’s on us!
4. A letter written in silver ink on lily white paper, in cursive that borderlines on unreadable
The 8th Day of Octoroktober, 104 After Calamity
Princes Zelda Bosphoramus Hyrule 5 Wildflower Crossing, Hateno Village Necluda, Hyrule
The Reception Celebration of the Wedding of Their MajestiesKing Sidon and Queen Yona of the Zora
By command of the King, the Advisor Muzu is directed to invite
Princess Zelda Bosphoramus Hyrule And Sir Link, Knight-Captain of the Hyrule Royal Guard
to be present at Zora’s Domain on the 3rd day of Naydrember, 104AC
Dear Princess Zelda,
I hope your recovery in Hateno with Sir Link has been restorative. As Winter draws closer and the days shorter, time of respite is often best spent with close companions.
My dear Sidon has told me all of what happened to you in the ancient past, and I must extend my deepest sympathies for the hardships you have endured. I cannot even begin to imagine them. I must also express my gratitude that Sidon has returned to us. While he is so humble as to pass all credit for the victory against the Demon King to Sir Link and his fellow Sages, to those in Zora’s Domain he is a hero.
It would give us great joy if you could join us in a month’s time for I do so wish to meet you. However, I will understand completely if you choose to remain in the quiet solace of home.
Sincerely, Queen Yona of Zora’s Domain
5. An informal letter, written in an assured hand
Zelda,
Did you also get an invite to Sidon and Yona’s wedding? Or second wedding? I’ve never even been to Zora’s Domain. You will have to tell me what to wear. Is it cold? Is there really water everywhere? Not that I have a problem with that.
So your sabbatical with Link has been just ‘good’? I get the sense you’re holding back details. If you don’t want to put anything in writing, you can call me using the Purah Pad. I could tell, Zelda, that when Link brought you to Lookout Landing after our battle with the Demon King, he couldn’t wait to whisk you away again. And what’s this about leaving Hateno next week? So soon!
I suppose I understand. You and I have our kingdoms to take care of. It is nothing less than our duty to do as much as we can. Heroines, I don’t think I’ve ever had a holiday. Even going to Lanayru is ‘official business’ as Chief of the Gerudo. But I will get to see you, and we can talk and laugh and drink all evening. Until then, sister.
(Or you can simply call me! I want to hear everything, Zelda. Even if he proposes. ESPECIALLY if he proposes).
Yours, Riju
6. A typed letter, on paper with a watermark of a Sheikah eye
10.20.104AC
Princess Zelda and Champion Link Lookout Landing Central Hyrule
Princess, Champion--
Thank you for your latest report from Lookout Landing on the rebuilding efforts post-Upheaval. I trust that Purah isn’t working you too hard and that Josha is proving a very dedicated assistant. I know that Impa’s instruction was for you to rest as long as you need, however I disagree. On the contrary, I believe that engagement and activity is the best way to stay invigorated. It worked for me after all.
I’m pleased to report that the manufacture of a second Purah Pad is nearly complete. I’ll need to finish the work at my lab in Akkala, so will be returning there. You’re welcome to visit any time. I suggest doing so before Dincember. Once Winter starts in Akkala, it really settles in.
Speaking of Akkala, Granté visited last week and wishes to relay that the house Link purchased from the Hudson Construction Company is complete. He also said something about not knowing if you wanted plants or children’s toys in the house and that he ended up purchasing both. I suggest you liaise with him directly on that matter.
Regards, Robbie
7. A hastily scrawled note bearing the mark of the red Yiga eye
To the scoundrel who calls himself Link,
You have slighted us for the last time! Master Kohga will have his vengeance.
Already our forces gather weapons of ultimate death beyond your comprehension! Just last month, we debuted the HOVERDOOM MK.4!
Your day of reckoning approaches. As soon as we find his excellency , you will know true fear! So just let us know if you have seen him… if you want to live!!
Damn it, why am I even writing this note? I’ll just leave it in our hideout in Karusa Valley. Link will never get in there…
8. A carefully and neatly written note, on lined paper
Zelda, Hyrule’s adored Princess
I am dictating this note to Josha, as my construct arms cannot grasp a writing quill. I had intended to create an attachment to allow this, however it was not to be.
It is my request that you gather the Sages to Lookout Landing, where Link and I have built a new balloon ship. Link may no longer have my brother's arm to aid him, but his strength and endurance have proven invaluable in this endeavour. With this ship I intend to bring everyone to the Temple of Time on the Great Sky Island. It will be my gift to them as Sages, and then I must depart.
There are words I must say before then that I fear will fail me if I try to convey them to you in person. However, you mean a great deal to me, so I have written them down instead.
Zelda, my dear friend. You had no obligation to aid my people, yet you sacrificed everything to do so. When I thought all was lost against the Demon King, your faith and hope for the future gave me the will to continue. It was your bravery in the face of annihilation and your vigilance over many millennia that turned the tides in our favour and allowed us to finally end the war. Hyrule will be forever in your debt and this act will be your legend.
I am merely grateful to have survived to your era, to have met your friends and allies (whose wedding feast I was honoured to attend), and to have seen that Hyrule will be under the care of those who are not only wise, but courageous and kind. One such Hyrulean sits at my side now, helping me write you this letter.
As a final note – during your absence, I saw firsthand just how deeply Link cares for you. When you described him to me, I pictured a brave Knight of course, but the Link I met was more than that. He overflowed with tenacity, even in his darkest moments, and while the past half-year has been difficult, I don’t think he ever truly gave up hope of seeing you again. You are to him as the sky to the stars and the ocean to the waves; whatever you dream of he will dedicate himself to its fruition. I will leave you content in the knowledge that together, you will guide Hyrule to new beginnings and greater futures.
We will be ready to travel to the Great Sky Island in three days. I hope you will join us on the journey.
— Mineru
Well, it is done. I have read every log, viewed every photo and listened to every recording on this Purah Pad. It is quite the account; the valiant quest of Link, a Knight of Hyrule, to awaken the Sages, defeat the Demon King, and reunite with his beloved Princess Zelda.
With me.
I scarcely know where to begin. I can hardly believe I am here at all. Yet, I am here, thanks to Link and the Sages, and Queen Sonia and King Rauru… All of them devoted themselves to Hyrule’s salvation, for which I will always be grateful. Link tells me I was of aid in the final battle, and while it is true that my power was able to restore the Master Sword, a blade is only as strong as its wielder.
So is this it then? Is this true peace, after all this time? I myself have been restless, falling from memory to memory. I cannot shake Rauru and Sonia from my mind. They were the ones who gave me my life back after all, or so Mineru theorised before she left us. It feels like only yesterday that I was dining with them all in their grand palace. I keep expecting to find Rauru in his hall talking with his constituents, or Sonia out in a garden tending the flowers, or Mineru lost in a book within her vast library. I wish we could be together, but I take solace that they can now rest. I will honour them by protecting the Kingdom that fate has passed to my care – it seems the least I can do.
Since that fateful day of the defeat of the Demon King, Link and I have attempted to rest. However, I believe it is in neither of our natures. We spent some time in Hateno, the first two days of which we did little more than sleep. During that time, Link clung to me day and night, protesting the second I was out of his grasp, as though to pin me to the earthly realms lest I float up into the sky again. Then, once it became clear I was back for good, neither of us could bear lazing about. The more he told me of his quest to find me, the more I wanted to see all of our friends and allies again. The more I told him of my journey in the past, the more he wanted to show me the Zonai relics he had found. We were back on the road within a week, and have just come from Lookout Landing to visit Akkala and see our new house.
In quiet moments I have been reading the extensive field notes that Link has kept on this Purah Pad. I cannot describe the feelings they provoke in me. I am constantly struck by the tremendous efforts of all those in Hyrule. Their headstrong Princess set another Calamity upon them, and never did they despair, only banding together to vanquish Ganondorf once and for all. And Link… he suffered so greatly when he learned what happened to me. I’ve felt compelled to apologise for it, and often. When I was lost in the past I ached to return home, but I accepted my sacrifice as necessary. I never thought what sacrifice really meant. To lose yourself is one thing; but to be lost to all those who love you? Such consequence didn't occur to me at the time.
He does love me, doesn't he? It overwhelms me to read his words, they tremble with it. Yet somehow I never knew. I was so foolish as to never even tell him myself. All that time together, before the Calamity, before the Upheaval, and we never said such simple words. We took for granted that which felt obvious but could be so much richer if confessed. We’ve remedied that now, many times over. And I do love him, more than anything, and I want the life he dreamed of for us. Certainly, we have already begun, first with the house in Akkala, and lately with much practice at the necessary steps towards a family of our own. (I do hope no one but Link ever reads this.)
To that point, this will be my only entry into this particular Purah Pad. It is no longer mine. Through every hardship and triumph of the past half year, this little device has been Link’s constant companion. So I entrust it to him now, to continue recording our story and the story of Hyrule. I pray it will be a good one, though perhaps with a little less excitement than what has occurred thus far.
By the Goddess’ Grace,
Zelda
A lot has happened. Plenty to write. This Purah Pad has given me a voice I didn’t know I had. Think I’ll start with an account of how we defeated the Demon King (or Demon Dragon) for that Lucky Clover Gazette column Penn mentioned…
But not now. Not for a long while.
Zelda’s here. We’re both here. It’s a sunny Autumn day and we have a home to go back to, one that’s up on a hill, overlooking the sea. I’ll make her dinner; a meat and rice bowl maybe, with ginger and Hyrule herb? Then tomorrow we’re back on the road – the whole Kingdom is ours to explore. I’m up for anything – somewhere new to find, someone new to meet, a new puzzle, a new enemy, a new fight. I can face it all, face anything, with her or without. But it doesn’t matter, not right now. She's here, in my arms, watching me type this. Better not write too long. Fate gave us back the time we nearly lost. I’m going to make the most of it.
Until next you hear from me,
Link
Zelda is no longer a she when it comes to the Light Dragon. Zelda is gone. There is no Zelda left. The Zelda that we saw in Breath of the Wild is gone, having turned into a creature. An actual animal.
The Light Dragon is not Zelda. The Light Dragon is the Light Dragon. It was once a Hylian, the Princess, but now, it isn't, not anymore. The Light Dragon accepted its fate, and now it roams aimlessly above the cloud barrier for millions and millions of years. Cursed to float through the skies, screaming into the nothingness for reasons it doesn't know, for reasons it doesn't understand.
It wails, it cries, but for what reason? For what purpose? It doesn't know, because Zelda as we knew her is gone. A Zelda that will one day become itself is born far below, and it has no idea. It has no idea because its life before becoming the Light Dragon is gone. It can no longer remember. Only the feelings of the remnants of our Princess is still there, and the Light Dragon can't properly understand why. Because it's an animal. Nothing more.
Zelda is gone.
Zelda knew the price she would be paying, and she paid it without hesitation, because she cares deeply for Hyrule. Because she loves Hyrule. Because she loves everyone.
And she believes that Link will defeat the Demon King,
Even knowing she will never, ever, return.
To remain as an animal for the rest of time.
To never truly die.
She doesn't get her happy ending.
Because Zelda is now gone.
And only the Light Dragon remains.
The pronouns changing from She to It I feel are extremely EXTREMELY powerful and drive home just how deeply Zelda's sacrifice goes. Zelda isn't a she anymore. The Light Dragon is an it. Not a hylian. Not a human. The Light Dragon isn't a person. It's an it. Like how you would speak about any of the other creatures of Hyrule.
The horses are its. The foxes are its. The birds are its.
And so is the Light Dragon.
The Light Dragon is part of the natural Fauna of Hyrule now. Always has been. And it always will be.
Chapter 1: Part 1
A gust of wind rippled through Sky’s hair. He straightened in the saddle of the rented mountain goat and sniffed the air. It carried a salty tang that cloyed the back of his throat. Too far removed from the sharp pristine air of home.
He sighed and slumped back into the saddle.
“Is something wrong, sire?” Fledge, his squire, rode up next to him.
“Nothing quite like home, am I right?” Sky smiled wryly.
Fledge sniffed the air and started coughing.
Sky chuckled and patted Fledge’s back.
“Dusting the road again?” Groose called from the cart behind them. Peatrice, sitting next to him, snorted.
Red crept up the back of Fledge’s neck and his cheeks brightened with each cough.
As one of Sky’s family’s retainers, Groose had been appointed to oversee food and finances during the journey, while Peatrice, another retainer, was charged with tending to the travelling gear. Both were amicable enough, though an understanding seemed to have developed between them and Sky had a feeling Groose had never quite forgiven Fledge for taking the place as Sky’s squire.
Fledge had hidden his face in the corner of his elbow. Tears shimmered at the corners of his eyes. Poor chick had never been to the Surface before. “Here.” Sky handed him his water bottle. “I’ll have a word with Groose later.”
Fledge accepted the bottle with a nod. “What is that smell, sire?”
“We’re approaching the ocean.” Sky pointed towards the top of the hill they had been slowly climbing since dawn. “Once we reach the peak we’ll be able to see the red towers of Castletown and, beyond, the blues of the Great Ocean. It’s a marvellous sight. If you ignore the smell, of course.”
Fledge smiled wanly. “I’m sure I’ll enjoy it when I see it.”
Sky squeezed his shoulder and returned the smile warmly. “That’s the spirit.” Another gust of wind tore through the air, carrying the smell of salty ocean and sunbaked seaweed. In the distance, seagulls cried.
Their first glimpse of Castletown was this: the afternoon sun glittering in distant roofs and windows; white specks of seagulls soaring above the docks; a congregation of slim ship’s masts rising from the shipyard; and above it all, the three red towers of the castle and the Temple of Time.
Deep peace settled over Sky’s heart. After his trials he had made a solitary pilgrimage to the Temple to let his body and mind heal from the traumas inflicted upon it. He had spent many weeks in prayer and conversation with the priestesses and clerics there, and had made many close friends.
Exhaling, he placed his hand over the time stone the High Priestess had presented him with when they parted. “It is a symbol of the worlds you have walked,” she had said. “Carry it with pride, and know that the Goddess walks with you.”
With his hand on the time stone, he raised his free arm and cast a moonbeam into the skies.
