Love, Hate and Everything in Between
Summary: Regina hated you and you hated Regina. Each of you so obsessed with taking down the other. But was this obsession pure hatred or something more?
Character Pairings: Regina x fem!reader, Regina x Cady (if you squint)
Warnings: Slurs, Bullying, Toxic Behaviour, Internalised Homophobia
Words: 2.6k
A/N: This is my first fic / one-shot on here so I hope you guys enjoy. I’ve been reading some fics on here and decided we don’t have enough Regina fics going round, so I thought, what better than a classic enemies to lovers (?). Apologies for any mistakes I did write half of this at 4am. If you do enjoy, please let me know because I wouldn’t mind turning this into a full blown fic, I have plenty more ideas for it. Also, I’m very open to requests!
Tumblr media
You and Regina. Two of the most popular girls in school.
Regina hated you, and you hated Regina.
It had been this way since you had joined North Shore a year ago and gained popularity, despite Regina’s attempts to take you down at every turn. But one thing you and your best friend, Janis Imi’ike couldn’t figure out was why Regina was so obsessed with you. To the point you would catch her staring at you from across the cafeteria almost daily, albeit with an icy glare plastered on her face. You had both had your fair share of run-ins with each other, after all, Regina couldn’t stand to see the new girl rise to popularity as fast as you had in your year of being at this school. But the difference between you and Regina was that you actually treated people with respect... and you just happened look pretty while doing it.
Jealousy. That’s all you had chalked her behaviour down to, until recently.
Regina had consistently made it clear that she was in fact, not gay. From her messy relationship with Aaron Samuels to openly flirting with Shane Oman in the halls, she had made it very clear she only had eyes for men. Her performative gestures with Shane in the hallways also coupled with the spreading of rumours about certain people being a lesbian. From the way Regina had spoken this word, it had made it seem as if this was the worst possible thing to be known as at North Shore. No one in school had ever had the guts to stand up to Regina for her problematic behaviour, especially since she ruled the halls with fear. Yet her reign seemed to be interrupted the moment you transferred to North Shore. You were the only person who wasn’t afraid to defend yourself, or others for that matter.
Naturally, Regina could not stand this. Which lead to you having a constant target on your back for rumours and blatant lies in order for you to lose your popularity as well as your dignity. You thought it was incredibly excessive of her to make out that being a lesbian was a bad thing. Partly because your best friend and partner-in-crime, Janis was a lesbian and partly because deep down, you knew you had an attraction to girls too. Yet the only people who knew this was Janis and Damien, of course, your two closest friends.
You had not yet been in a relationship since joining North Shore that year, not due to avoidance, but due to all your time being taken up by your rivalry with Regina. Which was totally normal… right?
The most recent rumour that was circling the halls, of course spread by Regina, was that at a party that you had both been to last Friday night, you had made a pass at Regina. Hearing this from Damien in English class that day was the last thing you had needed after enjoying a supposedly drama free day for once. Anyone who was at the party that night would’ve known that wasn’t true, yet Regina had a certain charm to the way she could make anything seem believable. You of course weren’t surprised at her attempts to drag your reputation down for the umpteenth time this year. She loved making out that you were the one who was obsessed with her and not the other way round. It irked you to think that she could get away with having the last laugh. You would have just let it slide, but your ego once again stood in the way of your ability to allow Regina to think she had won.
So that’s when lunch rolled around. You, Janis, and Damien were sitting at your usual table, with the plastics in view. Having to watch them gossiping with each other and occasionally glancing your way had left you with a deep-seated feeling of rage. You had never been one to often keep your emotions in check, this seemed to be your downfall in situations like these. Feeling anger like this was always the driver of your revenge. Coupled with the fact that thoughts of Regina didn’t often leave your mind. Which was obviously due to the fact that you resented her so much. You hated everything about her. Sure, she was gorgeous, with those stupid green eyes that always harboured some form of winged eyeliner, along with the rest of her makeup that accentuated her already flawless features. That stupid beautiful blonde hair that always seemed to sit in the perfect place, flowing down her back like she was some sort of supermodel. Those perfect lips tha-
“Dude, are you even listening to me right now?” Janis questioned, lightly punching your arm, ripping you away from your thoughts. A small blush crept up your neck, realising you had been so deep in thoughts about Regina that you had completely zoned out of the conversation you were supposed to be having.
You faltered for a moment before attempting to save yourself with a reply “Y-yeah of course. I was just-“
“Clearly planning her revenge against queen of the plastics, god Janis, keep up” Damien chimes in, attempting to save the day. Janis just rolls her eyes at both of you. She had been dealing with Regina and her posse for years, which meant she had more or less tuned their drama out in an attempt to stay sane at this school. With you however, it was a different story, Regina somehow always found the perfect way to rile you up.
“The day queen bitch of North Shore gives it a rest with these dumbass rumours, will be the day I know peace” Janis huffed, which made both you and Damien chuckle in response. “Especially with her obsession over who’s a lesbian and who’s not. If you ask me, she should just come out of the closet already.” She then nods to you “I mean, the closet might as well be glass with the way she stares you down at any given moment. Coming from a fellow girl kisser, she wants you baaad.” She laughed at her own words. Receiving an eye roll from you this time.
“That girl needs to be called out on her shit.” You glance over at Regina who is sporting a smug smile listening in to her friends gossiping. You couldn’t stand the fact that she had gotten under your skin once again. With the rumour fresh in your mind, you couldn’t help yourself from wanting to act. Deep down you loved the drama between the both of you, it gave you some sort of high, being able to pull Regina off her own narcissistic pedestal. It was like some sort of addiction; you couldn’t get enough of it “in fact… what better time than right now?” You uttered, as you shot up from your seat. Before either Janis or Damien could sway you out of it, you were already making your way over to the table across the cafeteria.
As you approached, you could see Regina’s eyes flicker towards you, a wry smirk growing on her face. On seeing Regina’s attention shift, the rest of the plastics turned to face your way, which didn’t deter you in the slightest. Having a rivalry with Regina for this long, you were used to all eyes being plastered on you while confronting her. Plus, nothing about Regina’s minions scared you. All they ever seemed to do was blindly follow her around like lost puppies. The only person who you had never understood as being part of the group was Cady Heron. You had sat with her in a couple of your classes, and with the way she spoke, it seemed she so desperately wanted to be her own person instead of being grouped in with the meanest girls in school. This lead to you gaining a small amount of respect for her. A few times you had considered asking her why she still sticks with Regina after seeing the way she treats her, but you knew that would be a whole other mess. Besides, there was a high chance that she’d go running straight to Regina about it. It seemed as though Cady was on the tightest leash out of anyone in the plastics… probably because Regina knew she could be pulled away from her with the right amount of convincing.
Right before you reached the table you noticed Regina stiffen her posture, followed by a groan, “here comes queen lesbo of North Shore”, which was followed by a few snickers from Gretchen and Karen. Funnily enough, Cady remained silent. “What’s up? Couldn’t get enough of me Friday ni-“
You interrupt her by slamming your hands on the table, which not only grabbed the attention of the plastics, but those who were on the surrounding tables too. You lock eyes with Regina as you spoke in a low tone, attempting to control your anger towards her.
“Real cute hearing that you’re telling people I came onto you, when anyone who was there knows we barely even made eye contact.” Regina raised an eyebrow at you, smirk still in place. She then spoke condescendingly, before you could continue.
“Oh honey, of course you don’t remember, you were sooo drunk and all over me, everyone saw it, right Gretch?” She then shot her a dangerous look to which Gretchen instantly nodded in response. This amused you slightly, knowing she was laying it on thick. She was trying so desperately hard with this angle that you decided to use her tactics against her for once. You let out a laugh of false amusement before continuing.
“Oh please Regina, you’re trying so hard to convince everyone it’s true, almost as if… you wish it was? I mean it wouldn’t be surprising. I’ve seen the way you stare at me in the hallways, you make it a bit obvious don’t you think?” By this point, the smile on Regina’s face had completely dropped, morphing into a poisonous glare. As she opened her mouth to cut you off, you kept speaking, raising your tone to catch the attention of others. “-so obvious in fact, that I don’t even need to say it out loud, people are whispering about it already. So next time you wanna spread rumours like that, try taking a look in the mirror first.” People around you gasp, hearing you speak to Regina in the same way she would leaves even the queen bee herself in slight shock before she manages to compose herself. You hadn’t even considered the weight of the words you had spoken until they had left your mouth. You had basically just accused her of having a huge crush on you and judging by the state it left her in, it didn’t seem like that was far from the truth.
“So, you are gay?” Karen pipes up first, mouth slightly agape as she speaks. Regina shoots a glare at her, making her immediately look in the opposite direction.
It was your turn to smirk seeing her cheeks turn scarlet as she gritted her teeth. She was clearly outraged, the look on her face said so. Yet, hidden behind her eyes, there seemed to be an ounce of shame present. Having a moment to study this look almost made you feel… regret? Though in the next beat, she rose up from where she was sitting and took a few steps towards where you’re stood, towering over you slightly. She had rarely ever made a move to get this close to you before, and standing where she is right now, you could practically smell her expensive perfume. You fought the urge to take a step back, as your breath hitched slightly. For a moment she hesitates, her eyes flicker to your lips for just a split second, but not fast enough that you don’t catch her doing it. If this wasn’t happening in front of the whole school crowd, you would be sure that she was about to lean in and kiss you. You felt yourself taking a heavy breath to steady yourself before she snaps at you.
“Listen, dyke. If you ever catch me staring at you it’s because I think you’re a freak. And if you think for one second, I would ever be into you, then you’re even more delusional than I thought. So why don’t you and the rest of your sad little band of freaks over there, go and-“
She is almost immediately cut off by a teacher who walks over to the group, clearly having been alerted of the altercation going off in the middle of the cafeteria. Regina immediately takes a step back from you and fixes her hair, attempting to seem as innocent as possible.
“Girls, what seems to be the problem?” Ms. Norbury questions, looking between the two of you. With the rest of the plastics keeping silent, it was up to one of you to speak up first. Regina then plasters a fake polite look on her face and turns to Ms. Norbury to speak. Right as you expected her to defame you all the way to your seat in detention, she instead gives a different response.
“There’s no problem, everything’s fine.” Regina smiles at her as you see the rest of her crew nodding behind her, which brings you to scoff at the sudden change up in her demeanour. Having dealt with Regina many times before, it was clear that Ms. Norbury saw right through this attempt to get her to leave you both to it. Which lead to what she had to say next.
“Look girls, I know the two of you have had issues in the past. But I won’t tolerate drama like this during school hours.” She then steps between the both of you. “Now separate this and I’ll see you in my office after school. Both of you.” She then turns on her heel and walks away.
“Are you fucking kidding me?” you huff out in disbelief. After this, you decide it’s best to walk away from Regina and return to your table before your day could get any worse. But not before she hastily grips your forearm and subtly whispers some hostile words close to your ear.
“We are so not done, freak” she then roughly drops your arm before coasting back to her seat. Though her threatening remark left you stunned for a moment, her closeness left you breathless for longer. As you made your way back to Janis and Damien, you couldn't get the thought of her out of your head. After all the tension and pent-up anger between you, you secretly hoped she might be right. Because as you stared at her from across the cafeteria, your heart thumped in your chest, not out of fear, but something else. You were definitely not done with each other. Not by a long shot.

It has come to my attention that SOME OF YOU who read my last Byler post remain UNCONVINCED. So I'm gonna tack onto it this:
I'm older than fucking God and air, and I've been out and proud since 2007. Yes, I know what homophobia is, and yes, I know what queerbaiting is. I know about Supernatural and Teen Wolf and Sherlock and blahdyblahdyblah. No new ground is being covered here. I thought I made that clear in the original post, but, clearly, I did not.
I am aware of queerbaiting and homophobia, and I'm still wholeheartedly certain in Byler being canon anyway.
Okay, so there are three types of relationship I want to discuss when it comes to queerbaiting. They're all, like, "queer relationships that could have happened, but didn't".
First off, queer-coding. This isn't really a thing so much anymore, but it still crops up every once in a while. I'd argue it probably happens most with male-male relationships in family shows these days. First example that comes to mind is Mr. Smiley and Mr. Frowny from Steven Universe. You can't make a relationship canon because some shitty overhead bastard overhead said no, so you get as close as you can without compromising the show. Can't make someone gay? Well, now their comedy routine is a blatant allegory for a romantic relationship. Boom-shaka-laka. This is something I don't see being a problem with regards to Stranger Things, but I want it to be there as contrast, a demonstration of one of many things queerbaiting is not. However, one could argue that, thus far, Will Byers is, canonically, queer-coded. It's pretty fucking heavily implied in the show, and the creators have confirmed it, and you're gonna be able to see it if you're not FUCKING BLIND, but word of god is not technically canon which means that interviews don't technically make something canon, blahdyblahdyblahdyblah, technicalities, Robin has been explicitly stated in the text to be queer while Will has, thus far, not, outside of good ol' Show-Don't-Tell. Of course, anyone with two brain cells to rub together can tell that that's going to change by the end of Season 5, but, hey, for what it's worth, I'm throwing this out there.
Alrighty, Thingamajingama Number Two: "Oops, I accidentally made the greatest love story known to man." AKA, a genuine, honest-to-goodness mistake. Unfortunately, we do live in a heteronormative society. Sometimes people who don't think about being gay much write a friendship that's incredibly compelling and don't even consider the possibility that it could have been read as romantic. Something something Top Gun something. This is, again, not queerbaiting. This is Steddie, this is Ronance, this is Elmax, this is your favorite flavor of non-canon ship this week, this is not Byler. The creators know DAMN well what they're doing. They've talked about it. We know this. Nothing new here.
Which brings us to the topic of discussion here. Actual queerbaiting. This usually starts out as an "accidental greatest love story", and then reacts to fan response. And when I say "reacts", I mean like a goddamn chemical reaction. Like bleach and ammonia, bitch. It's noxious and it's gonna kick your fucking ass without mercy. This is when a creator is like, "Hey, let's get our queer audience invested, but we're not actually going to give them what they want because our straight audience isn't here for that/we personally think it's gross/we don't give enough of a shit to want to research a goddamn thing to write a real gay character," blah blah blah whatever excuse they want to come up with this time.
And when you think "queerbaiting", I want you to think "bullying". Because that's what it is. It's lucrative bullying, like beating us up and taking our lunch money, but it's bullying all the same. And it's a real goddamn thing, even if people misuse the word a lot, often when they mean one of the two above, sometimes when they mean "bury your gays", which is another homophobic thing entirely that I'm not going to get into here. Queerbaiting is the thing we're focused on, and it's real, and it's bullying. And here's the reason I want you to think of it as bullying:
They
Think
It's
Funny.
They are actively making fun of us.
That's why Dean had the "Cas, get out of my ass," line in Supernatural. It's why the "Do you like boys?" line happened in Teen Wolf. It's why "Lie with me, Watson," happened in the RDJ Sherlock Holmes movies. Because "It's just a joke, mate." "It was just a prank, bro." "You didn't really think it would happen, did you?" "You should see your face."
So here's probably the biggest reason I don't think it's specifically queerbaiting in this specific instance of Will Byers and Mike Wheeler.
Stranger Things has never, not once, made a gay joke. Ever.
Every single time queerness comes up, it's dead serious.
Lonnie calls Will a fag, and the show is not at all reluctant to show what a goddamn horrible person he is. And when Hopper latches onto that, it's not as "Hahah, is he gay, though?" It's because he's trying to determine a potential motive for Will's disappearance, and even if someone had interpreted it as a joke, Joyce immediately has a line that functions as snapping her fingers in front of the audience's face and yelling "FOCUS" when she says "He's MISSING." Basically outright saying "This isn't funny!"
Troy calls him a fairy, along with targeting Lucas and Dustin for their skin color and disability respectively, and Mike gets damn near murderous. Troy is portrayed as a goddamn monster and the show portrays it as justice when El makes him piss his pants and later breaks his arm.
Steve calls Jonathan "queer" as a slur and gets the shit beat out of him for it.
Billy's father is revealed to be homophobic and abusive in the same breath.
Mike says "It's not my fault you don't like girls!" and we're shown how devastated Will is and Mike immediately follows him to beg for forgiveness.
There is a joke in Robin's coming-out scene, but it's not at Robin's expense. It's at Steve's. Specifically for being heteronormative.
Jonathan has multiple scenes where he's trying so hard to tell Will that he's always going to love him as he is, whether he's gay or not, without pressuring him to come out before he's ready.
Even when there's a little bit of ribbing at Robin's expense, it's always because she's an awkward nerd who's nervous around pretty girls, just the same as Lucas and Dustin are teased when they both first develop crushes on Max, and even then, even then, it always comes as a package deal where they make fun of Steve's girl problems at the same time.
Stranger Things is an emphatically pro-gay show. It may not be the core point of the show the way it is in, say, Our Flag Means Death, but there is nothing less than respect for its queer characters. Its queer characters are always taken completely seriously. No one is making fun of us. They never have. That's why I have serious doubts that this is queerbaiting. It would come completely out of left field for the bullying to start in Stranger Things' final season.
So it's not at all likely to be queerbaiting because queerness is taken completely seriously. The creators have talked about Will's queerness, at least, so it's not an accident. And queer-coding would be silly to expect from this show when it's already on its final season. Like, what is Netflix gonna do? Cancel it? Not to mention all the explicit queerness that's in there already. And no one's gonna "What about the children?" a show that's had sex scenes in it since the first season.
There's no fakeout here. It's gonna happen. Breathe.

I want to talk a little bit about Frank Herbert and the Bene Gesserits, because it's something that's been on my mind for a while and I haven't seen anyone looking at these characters from this perspective yet (not that I looked very hard, but I check the tags occasionally and just haven't seen it, and this would be the first place I'd expect to).
It's strange in a good way seeing Dune become popular, and people actually reading the books, and it being cool to do so, not it being a niche and nerdy thing. But what's equally weird is to see all the praise Frank Herbert's getting, especially from women readers 😂
Because at any point between, I think, the 80s and the 2000s, if a guy said he liked Frank Herbert that was considered by women to be a red flag. I remember women chatting about this in online forums back in the day. It was the equivalent of a guy saying he likes Jordan Peterson now.
It's an analysis of Dune that doesn't seem to have come through again. Audiences have caught on to the homophobia inherent in how the Baron was represented, but nobody is talking anymore about the blatant sexism of the books.
And I say this as a long time fan, because I was super inspired by most of the female characters in the novels and in particular the Bene Gesserits, so to hear that Herbert was supposed to be a misogynist took me by surprise. "What do you mean it's sexist? This is great!" The idea of a group of women who fully dedicate themselves to their own intergalactic girl gang, who follow their own plans, who use their femininity to their own ends, who live through discipline and self control and are fully empowered to face down any threat, that was so inspiring to teenage me.
But I guess the sort of women I most admired were the ones who were terrifying to men.
I mean, the only "good" female characters are either not Bene Gesserits, like Chani, or are Bene Gesserits who go against the order, like Jessica. Moreover, the only "good" female characters are those who betray their group for the sake of men. Like Jessica going against the word of the Reverend Mother because Leto wanted a boy.
Irulan's only redeeming features are her complete dedication to Paul and being basically in love with him and being the author of glorifying history books about him in spite of the fact that he deposed her father and is keeping her in a loveless marriage and constantly publicly humiliates her by treating Chani as his wife.
Even Chani, an otherwise bland and marginal character compared to the film, is at her most poignant when dying in child birth for the sake of giving birth to Paul's children. A death which happens because Irulan had been secretly poisoning her out of jealousy. Frank Herbert just has women clawing each other's eyes out for the sake of Paul's affection. I don't care how good that dick is, it's not worth poisoning another woman over. Poison him instead and take the throne, girl.
But oh yeah, in this intergalactic empire tens of thousands of years in the future, they seem to have discovered neither the concept of divorce nor of female inheritance of titles and property. It can only be a man inheriting the throne, not the Emperor's biological daughter. And once Irulan is married, well she's just stuck there. Pretty incredible.
And however great the Bene Gesserits are, they still need a man to "see where they can not see". No matter how empowered a group of women becomes, they still need a man. Only a man can see into the future. Women can only see into the past. Therefore, only a man can save the world.
I get that they tried to conceal some of this in the recent film, and they managed to do so to some extent, but it's mostly been with Chani. You still have the problem of Jessica and Irulan being just servants for the whims of the men in their lives, a fact which gets them into a lot of trouble. And you have the Bene Gesserits portrayed as scheming witches who are evil to have their own plots and designs, and are dependent on a man to see into that place which terrifies them.
I mean, enjoy the books by all means. I always did in spite of all of this, and I still like the story and the world. I still love the characters too. But man if the author didn't have some unflattering ideas about us 😂

Coupling a few different headcanons together and I don’t remember if divorce exists in ATLA or if Mai is Izumi’s mom but part of me does think it would be funny if Zuko invented divorce specifically for Mai’s sake & so with her alimony from her failmarriage she’s free to spend several years being roommates w Sokka while they go to the university in ba sing se except this is not so that she can be employable her goal is to rack up as many useless degrees as possible.
One of her and Sokka’s favorite pastimes is attending essentially university workshops for open “mic” nights for like spoken word and stuff. Sokka kinda enjoys the artistry, Mai just wants to not be bored so she approaches these evenings with more irony-poisoning than he does. Mai thinks it would be very funny to sign Sokka up when she thinks he isn’t looking but much to her chagrin he’s actually better at making up poetry on the fly than he is writing it (not that he’s bad he studies different forms for fun™ like he’s basically a lit minor, but he also over-edits bc he’s extremely self critical).
Sokka Is good at spoken word but not in the way where it’s like, the hard hitting unpacking trauma kind of slam poetry, Sokka has never unpacked a trauma in his life, but under pressure he’s good at striking the right balance of comedy and the tiniest bit of vulnerability and clever wordplay. (This is also why he’s not that good at poetry he sits down and Thinks about, especially when asked to write anything abt himself bc he finds it incredibly navel-gazing and embarrassing). Still, Mai continues to play this joke on him when he least expects it, mainly bc she loves committing to the bit. She eases up for a while bc he starts to suspect her too much only to spring the bit onto him again whenever someone comes to visit just for maximum embarrassment, either Toph, Katara, or Zuko. Toph thinks the whole thing is hilarious. Zuko and Katara both find poetry night deeply moving, but Katara finds Sokka specifically being forced to vamp deeply funny.
She’s tried it w Suki but suki doesn’t even flinch & Mai wonders if it’s bc she’s just that supportive or if she’s just not that discerning when it comes to art. The real answer is that she is plently amused and will tell Sokka in her own time but also Sokka has embarrassed himself in front of Suki enough times that she doesn’t blink an eye at anything. Aang also is not fazed but that’s mainly bc he 100% wants to get in on the fun.
In retaliation, Sokka has gotten Mai on stage before but bc mai would rather die than spout poetry her time always ends up basically being musings abt her life that’s pseudo-workshopping material for a Tight Five & like… it’s not really poetry but the crowd is laughing including the guy who throws ppl out when ppl don’t stick to the correct form (on those specific days). So nobody is going to stop her. She tells a lot of really dryly delivered jokes abt her shitty childhood and her failhusband Li from the tea shop and it takes a hot sec before ppl realize holy shit, she’s actually talking abt the fire lord. And also jokes abt discovering lesbianism. Which she’s thoroughly embarrassed abt being late to the party about. & even more embarrassing to be a dyke secretly love with her best friend. Afterwards, Sokka and Mai do have to correct the other patrons who approach them bc they’re convinced Sokka is the dyke she’s in love with. But they’re just friends. (I don’t know how mining comedy out of blatant dyke drama would work if we’re right to assume Sozin invent homophobia in ATLAverse but w/e).
Also. Sokka WILL boo & heckle her out loud when her material stinks. But if anything, this gives her a chance to do crowd-work which she’s good at. So even tho it’s 100% genuine ppl do start to suspect it’s staged.
I also think part of Mai racking up unemployable degrees includes assignments where she makes really off-putting and macabre interactive exhibits/art installations bc she’s trying to work on authentically expressing herself & wants to be an unpalatable as possible to make up for the years of being a perfect daughter. But she also thinks being too earnest is deeply cringe so even tho her pieces are self evidently kinda tortured and gloomy, as a way of preserving her dignity her artist statements are intentionally as brief and opaque as possible for the highest impact comedic punch.

I need to be awake in three hours but I'm just thinking of this
Like, Aimsey right. I have many many problems with them. But my biggest problem is how they try to paint themselves as this huge advocate for queer people, women and mental health to their audience
And yet they shit on Dream. If you're truly going to be an advocate for any of this, talk about the biggest victim of homophobia in your own community. Sure Drean doesn't get called slurs every day (that's an Uber exclusive ✨️) but at the end of the day, the reason Dream gets treated like that is because he himself is queer and he welcomes a queer female audience with open arms
But no, Aimsey just uses him and and the rest of dteam as punching bags. They see them as less. Aimsey can not and will never be a truly safe space until they acknowledge what Dream has been through and the role they played to help perpetuate it. Aimsey proves the whole thing about how people's queerness is judged on morality
Dream is the biggest victim mcyt has ever witnessed and yet all they see is a villain. Congrats the right wing smear campaign worked.
Aimsey and the rest of the Brighton bastards can tout all they want about how they want to support victims and queer people and marginalized communities but until they're able to see past their own biases and accept the blatant hate they've helped spread, they will never be that. They will be two-faced liars who only accept you when it's to no harm them. As soon as they have to make themselves uncomfortable for your rights and comfort, all they give is scorn
Associating with Dream is hard, it is let's not kid ourselves. Even as fans it can be difficult and most fans feel like they have to hide when they're out in the real world. But that's precisely why it's so important that anyone who claims to be all for marginalized people is also willing to show support for Dream
That also goes to Catelyn. She called George out happily without hearing his side of the story but it was crickets when it came to punz.
This goes to Sniff who was all to eager to tear Dream down and share Andi's story but has been deathly silent on every other matter. This goes to Rue who in the midst of people reeling over what was found out about Wilbur took the opportunity and painted Dream as an enabler when he was simply in the room. This goes to all of them, every single one who can't keep Dream’s name out of their mouth as the general public slowly forgets theirs
And it goes to their fans too. Their fans who happily alienate and ostracize Dream fans on the basis of us enjoying our silly little guys. They who blindly believe every awful word that's thrown Dream’s way without wondering what he did to be called that and never question why they're so eager to hate him
I mention Dream the most because he's undeniably the center of all this, but neither George nor Sapnap are safe from this either
It frustrates me to no end because they're so incredibly preformative. Dream never outright says go support victims, but every month he quietly donates to a charity in support of victims
He doesn't try and claim he's an advocate for queer people, he just exists and fosters a community where you can be openly about that. He also designs delightfully subtle pride merch. He doesn't claim he's an advocate for mental health, but he occasionally mentions his own struggles as a teen and how he got through it and tells us it'll be okay even if it doesn't feel that way or he'll say yeah I'm medicated now and it helps
He isn't loud about any of this. He just quietly makes it known his thoughts and feelings in small ways that resonate deeply with his audience.
He's not an advocate, he's just someone who when accused of something decided to try and do something good while clearing his name. He's not an advocate, he's a queer person that exists. He's not an advocate, he's just a young adult who struggled in his younger years.
He's not an advocate but he's made his space a safe one regardless of who and what you are.
I got severely off topic and rambled sorry 😅
💫
don’t apologize, i appreciate hearing your thoughts <3
these parts of what you said really stood out to me:
“Aimsey proves the whole thing about how people’s queerness is judged on morality”
“They will be two-faced liars who only accept you when it’s no harm to them”
“As soon as they have to make themselves uncomfortable for your rights and comfort, all they give is scorn”
you’re right; if you want to foster a safe space for marginalized groups, you cannot pick and choose who is valid and who isn’t. we see this in so many different spaces and in so many different ways — the second that someone who’s part of a marginalized group isn’t liked anymore (usually because of others’ moral superiority complexes), they are completely alienated from their community at the hands of loud ‘advocates’.
one thing that really bothers me about all of this is that the main strength in advocacy is education. educating people is advocacy. and then these creators come forward claiming to be advocates who foster safe spaces, yet their only forms of ‘education’ or discussion are heated rants about other creators they don’t like, vagueing ongoing situations or drama, and shitting on creators like dream. and the worst part is how obvious it is that they haven’t even attempted to think critically about any of the hate they’re spreading. also, spreading hate is not advocacy! ever! spreading hate is not ‘supporting victims’! you’re inherently taking away from victims when you shift the focus onto someone to target. turning someone else into a victim isn’t supporting victims.
and about all the action dream has taken to support people in marginalized groups: there’s even a massive difference between those other creators & dream in terms of the messages they spread and the behaviours they encourage. dream has ALWAYS told his fans not to spread hate or fight people on his behalf. he has ALWAYS encouraged empathy, understanding, and compassion, and shown it himself even when the other party doesn’t necessarily deserve it and hasn’t shown him the same. he doesn’t go on hate-rants about other creators. he ALWAYS gives people the benefit of the doubt and tries to look at things from every possible perspective.
yes, talking is a huge part of advocacy. but an even bigger part is action. content creators make their agendas and intentions clear through their actions and behaviour, but their fans often get distracted by their words (i.e. “this is a safe space for queer people”). all of those examples you listed of ways dream has been a silent advocate makes his agenda clear. the same goes for creators like aimsey, who make empty promises and then do things that directly contradict the things they’re saying (claiming to support victims, yet completely ignoring all of the ways dream has been victimized).
advocacy is uncomfortable, period. being a large voice in a community and using that reach to support marginalized groups can shine a huge spotlight on creators. and once you see where a creator draws the line, where their support and ‘advocacy’ ends, their intentions and agendas become visible very quickly. and usually, the point where advocacy becomes too uncomfortable for a creator happens much sooner than people would expect. this is the issue with fans taking a creator’s words at face value; if those words aren’t backed up by any action, often times that means they’re untrue.

The fact that there was never any blatant in-your-face-hate-crime homophobia in Red, White and Royal Blue makes it so incredible.
In media with queer people they always have to show how much people hate us. But it was really refreshing to watch a romcom that happened to have queer main characters and no one abuses them for who they are.
Like yes of course there is the homophobic king and we can sympathise what Henry and Alex are feeling when they’re outed because we all already know that of course they’re hearing homophobia in universe, and we feel for them but not necessarily with them. There’s nothing horrible said into the audience, nothing we can hear, just the showing of true love and support of each other.
Even if I don’t like some of the book to movie changes, this a huge reason why this movie is so comforting and wonderful to watch.

I see people posting things like, "Why are some people obsessed with proving your ship is canon? Who even wants their ships to be canon, it's more fun when it's not?"
I get where people are coming from with this sentiment--it is fun to have your own headcanons, your own control of how you're interpreting the characters, not being reliant on what canon gives you, etc. I'm very much in favor of people doing whatever they want in fanworks, canon be damned! Ship what you want, go wild, ignore canon altogether if you want!
But with HxH and especially Gon and Killua, it IS important to me how essentially canon it is for a number of reasons. One of these is that the bond between them is one of the main emotional cores of the series, and to reduce it down to "Haha no homo! They're just bros! If you see it in ways other than that you're delusional!" is a disservice to what Togashi is writing--and it's essentially willfully misreading the source material.
Obviously, no one is obligated to ship it themselves, no one is obligated to like seeing it in a romantic light, but it irks me when people pick apart all the incredible nuance and beautiful details in HxH, all the rich subtext and meaning, and then pretend that the very present subtext and romantic framing between Gon and Killua isn't there at all. Especially as throughout the years I continue to learn more about Togashi and look even more deeply into HxH and it becomes increasingly more and more crystal clear how intentional it seems, how much of this is thoughtfully put in there for people to pick up on.
There's so much shounen out there that puts on a veneer of gayness--essentially giving the audience just enough vaguely gay things for the female audience (as well as gay audience, etc.) to latch on to for marketing/merchandise reasons, while mostly pushing het ships in the canon material officially. (And I'm not saying in all cases it's like that, but I do think that's the trend specifically with shounen series.) With Togashi, it very much seems like he creates it out of his own genuine personal interest and because that's the story he wants to tell--the kind of story he's wanted to tell for a long time and can get away with now because of changing social norms and the fact that he's already incredibly popular and he owns HxH outright.
Tumblr media
And as someone who loves Togashi's storytelling--all of it, not just the gay parts, of course--I care about what he's trying to create and intending to convey and it bothers me to see people outright denying it out of their own biases. I feel like people who deny it's there or refuse to see it in that way at all are missing a big chunk of the series, an important and intentional part of the series. (And this extends to other parts of the series that are queer, too, like Alluka for instance. There's so much in HxH that is queer in some way! Denying it all is there is ridiculous!)
And again, it doesn't mean people have to ship it, everyone is allowed to see what's there and ultimately choose to see it in a platonic way if they want, it's more when I see outright denial that this is the author's intent when all signs point to it being so that bothers me.
I think part of this is people just being casual viewers/readers of the series (though some of it is pretty blatant IMHO) and not being aware of all the Deep Lore that points to it being way more than in your average shounen, but a LOT of it is simply homophobia. It's frustrating being in a fandom for years where there are a bunch of people who go about picking apart all the nen powers and the beauty of Chimera Ant Arc in exhaustive detail and then utterly and completely deny that there are sound, well-documented reasons why a large part of the fandom sees it as a gay/queer work.
So hopefully this explains some of why I bother to argue the canon aspect at all, and why I think it matters to a lot of people specifically in HxH fandom.

I just want to add something to the Try Guys conversation we’ve all been collectively having for well over a month now. I’ve seen these points iterated several times but I am your local Loud Greek™️ and will be sharing my opinion.
for those of you who haven’t seen the SNL Try Guys sketch, don’t bother wasting your brain cells on it. it’s truly awful. every part of it was horrible. condensed into a few sentences, they greatly exaggerate the reactions of Eugene, Zach, and Keith, and greatly downplay Ned’s affair. I’ll get more into detail further down the post. look for this emoji: 🖕🏻
now, Ned has a direct connection to the SNL writer’s room. he went to Yale alongside and is admittedly friends with Will Stephen, who wrote/helped write that insanely tone-deaf Try Guys sketch. (proof in this tiktok here). he allegedly has up to three friends in the SNL writer’s room, but I was unable to find any sort of solid proof of the other two.
there are two possible scenarios behind this incredible play by SNL. 1. Ned contacted Will and threw a tanty about how he’s the victim and he’s being treated so unfairly and Will agreed and pitched/wrote the sketch 2. Ned did not contact Will but Will on his own thinks/thought that Ned is the victim and was being treated unfairly so he pitched/wrote the sketch - in both of these scenarios, Saturday Night Lame decides that, since the Try Guys news has turned the entire internet upside down, the sketch needs to air in order to get some of that sweet Gen Z attention. which is the single funny thing about this, since the only reactions I’ve seen (save a handful of fuckheads) have been every flavour of pissed about this. either way this sketch came to life, it looks really bad for Ned and hurts literally everyone involved way more.
🖕🏻 alrighty! time to deep dive into the absolute fuckery of this sketch. trigger warning (tw) for infidelity, homophobia, and trauma. - they turn Ned’s full-blown affair - let’s not forget, he called it a relationship and the guys confirmed it had been occurring for a while - into a single kiss. they verbatim call it a ‘consensual kiss’. this is not only a blatant lie on SNL’s part, but it completely eradicates the inherently problematic nature of Ned sleeping with a subordinate for several months. even if we take Ariel and Will (Alex’s ex-fiancé) out of it, sleeping with an employee is quite literally illegal. - the other guys dropped Ned because he did something very illegal with his power as a boss. they also admit that he was dropped because of his betrayal to their brand and image and trust as friends, but they had no choice but to remove him from the company because of his misconduct. he was not let go because he cheated on his wife. he was let go because he caused a giant HR and legal mess in their company and 2nd Try LLC would have been in big trouble had they kept him on. SNL jokes that Ned only kissed his subordinate and didn’t tell his friends and how heinous and awful and sdfajklgrjfsdb and that’s why he was fired which is. A COMPLETE FUCKING LIE. - SNL make a joke out of the fact that the guys call it trauma. the audience laughs every time the Zach character says the word trauma. how completely devoid of human decency do you have to be to find humour in the life-altering fuckshit these men went through? yes, it’s not the kind of trauma that victims of abuse or SA or natural disasters go through, but they had their trust violated and had to cut off a dear friend of theirs. the entire world has been talking about this since it dropped. that kind of attention is fun for nobody. let’s not forget, Zach, Keith, and Eugene are in charge of an entire company in the middle of all of this. they had to remove one of their best friends, a co-creator, from their staff, and figure out a way to buy him out in order to keep their company (their LIFE’S WORK) afloat through all of this. the stress of that alone is enough to cause trauma. dealing with HR and lawyers and keeping the internet’s information pool in check atop all that must have been torture. THAT is trauma, point blank period. - SNL has a history of sexual misconduct allegations that have not been handled. I’d link articles, but there are literally too many to sort through. just google ‘SNL sexual misconduct’ and you’ll find some. the fact that SNL’s history matches up better with their sketch of Ned’s out of control penis than Ned’s actual out of control penis is very telling and very gross. - they make an INSANE caricature of Eugene Lee Yang. for those of you who don’t know, Eugene Lee Yang is a Korean-American actor and filmmaker and one of the 4 original Try Guys and owners/co-creators of 2nd Try LLC. he is also openly gay. in the sketch, Eugene is played by Bowen Yang, who is also an openly gay Asian actor. however, Bowen’s take is... not great. he really plays up the true, genuine anger and pain and exhaustion on Eugene’s face in the original video and turns this Eugene character into the hostile, angry, aggressive POC character. not only that, but they give ‘Eugene’ a very stereotypical gay accent. it’s very harmful and very problematic, considering neither of the white guys are made fun of in nearly the same way at all. - the sketch makes NO mention of Ariel (Ned’s wife) or Will (Alex’s ex-fiance). they also keep referring to Alex as a Food Baby, and not Ned’s employee. if you are unfamiliar with the Try Guys and viewed this sketch, you would be inclined to believe that SNL was not exaggerating that much and you’d assume both Ned and Alex are/were single during their affair and that Alex was not Ned’s subordinate. this is extremely disrespectful to the victim most hurt by all of this, Ariel and Will. AND! Ned has two fucking children with Ariel. for the sake of rubbing salt in the wound for a failed funny haha, Ned’s entire family has been erased. I cannot even express to you how angry that makes me. poor Ariel and Will have done absolutely nothing wrong and are being punished over and over and over again.
Ned Fulmer is a piece of garbage human and whoever greenlit that SNL sketch is too. justice for Ariel, Will, and everyone at 2nd Try LLC.
I hope I got everything I needed to say with this. I’ll reblog this and add more if new information comes out or I come up with more opinion blurbs.

i seriously believe that more male-partnered radfems would feel more "comfortable" if more lesbians/febfems/celibate het radfems on here would stop supporting or voicing any kind of support for the radfems of SK/CN/TW as radfems from those countries do not think male-partnered women are feminists and think they are only helping uplift the patriarchy. For some reason, with the new year, a lot of radfems from those countries have been posting on here in their own languages mostly to others who also speak their language, when you translate their posts, a lot of them are the type of woman who would 100% be outcasted by radblr for their misogyny.
You reblogged a post from pierriq who literally has a post saying women who don't move forward to 6b aren't feminists and they can't live without dick and need to find freedom. pierriq has also reblogged from another Taiwanese radfem who has a post saying she doesn't have any solidarity with gay men nor any sympathy for them, thinks gay men who use surrogacy should die - which is blatant homophobia and dividing the community helps no one. Western radical feminism and Asian radical feminism are two completely different ideals and do not mix at all, asian radfems are primarily het women who think other women who don't engage in 4b/6b aren't feminists and do not claim them, call them names and blame them for lack of progress, this kind of behavior isn't acceptable or compatible with western radical feminism and only further alienates osa women, especially ones who are male-partnered.
tl;dr stop supporting radfems from SK/CN/TW if you're against women speaking badly about male-partnered women, those women are incredibly misogynistic and their beliefs are not compatible with the beliefs of western feminists.

this just sounds racist honestly. sorry but western radfems are not somehow better bc they’re less radical and eastern ones aren’t worst bc they are more for separatism and more radical action 😭

Patty absolutely noticed the blatant racism Aeltri directed at Meghan. It wasn't hard to miss. She just didn't care. Just like she never cares about Aeltri racism, homophobia, transphobia and antisemitism. Patty's hatred of happy, successful women trumps any kind of decency she still possesses.
Calling Meghan "oreo" is more than not cool. It's racism, full stop. Patty's incredibly weak response just proves that she's one of the biggest hypocrite alive.

idk if anyone still uses other socials (twitter, tiktok, etc) but the best thing that we could do for OFMD now is to complain publicly and call out the blatant homophobia from HBO Max. the only thing that matters to these companies are their reputation, dont complain directly TO them, go online and complain ABOUT them, loudly, outlining exactly why its homophobic to censor and then prematurely cancel their incredibly popular queer show. even if there’s no saving ofmd at least it might show companies that when they minimize queer stories, it wont go unnoticed

why are queer characters so important in modern media?
right guys, sit down and buckle your seatbelts, because i'm about to explain why so many of us feel so strongly about characters being not straight or cis- particularly talking about stranger things, because that's what i'm the most into right now, so it'll be the easiest for me to talk about.
i know that this isn't the best platform to talk about this on, because so many people here are queer, but i've seen too much blatant homophobia surrounding will/byler from stranger things, and i'm fucking sick of it. so i'm writing this.
so the biggest question i've seen recently amidst all the byler stuff (that was also a big thing when season three came out, and robin had her coming-out scene with steve) is why did the show need gay characters? it was fine, why did they need to make it all "woke"?
growing up queer is fucking hard. i'm incredibly lucky to have been surrounded by supportive parents and friends, but so many people do not have that resource. there are so many queer kids out there who don't have anyone around them that's accepting, and seeing a queer character in their favorite show can COMPLETELY change their perspective. hell, i'm in a good situation in terms of my sexuality and the people around me, and yet seeing well-represented queer characters in movies and tv is still so huge to me, because i’ve struggled with accepting my identity for so long.
will byers as a character is so incredibly important to me because he is so much like me. i've been in (and in some aspects still am in) a lot of the same situations that he has, in terms of relationships and friend groups and growing up. that scene in season three, where he gets upset about mike and lucas not wanting to play d&d, and after arguing with mike (it's not my fault you don't like girls), he goes to destroy castle byers? that's one of the only times i've ever cried watching a tv show, because i've been there, and i still am there. growing up queer is fucking isolating. even with other gay friends, our experiences are nowhere near the same, and it doesn't make it any easier to see everyone else around you growing up and getting into straight relationships so easily when you're sitting there panicked about whether that one girl you like would be weirded out by you liking her, because what if she's straight and suddenly your whole friendship is ruined.
as a young queer person, good representation is so important to me. i’ve been queerbaited too many times because i just wanted to be seen (i’m looking at you voltron), because i wanted to be reassured that my future wasn’t hopeless solely because i was a girl who liked girls- and again, im in a good environment for queerness. i live somewhere where i could hold a girls hand in public with only a few odd looks, my friends and immediate family are supportive, and everyone around me is aware of my identity- so think about all the people who don’t have everything that i’m so lucky to have. so many queer kids grow up in places where they can’t be open about their sexuality or gender, where there’s no one like them for miles.
being able to see queer people in good, healthy relationships is life changing to queer kids who grow up feeling isolated and alone because of who they are.
specifically about stranger things, as well: it’s not a show like heartstopper, where you’re guaranteed to get queer characters because that’s what the show is about. stranger things isn’t about romance, queer or straight- it’s about kids fighting monsters from another dimension. making a main character canonically gay is fucking HUGE, because it solidifies queerness as something that doesn’t need to be advertised as the driving point behind a show, making it different than any other old romance show. they’re fighting monsters, and hey- that one kid with the dorky haircut happens to be gay!
it would be a huge win for our community. so. what are we not going to do? we’re NOT going to act like queer characters are only added so that a show can seem ‘woke’, because queer people are NOT a tool to ‘win you points with the liberals’. we are here, existing, just like everyone else.
we deserve to be able to see ourselves in the media we consume.
fuck anyone who says otherwise.

A TOH Vent
This thought has been brewing in my head for a bit so I’m just gonna say it and call it a day. This is just my thought though, feel free to be entitled to your own.
If The Owl House ending is rushed or hell- even just bad in general? The only people I will blame is Disney. I would never blame Dana or the crew.
The fact that Season 2B is some of the best work in the show and it was written knowing that the show would be cut just shows how much potential there is/was in TOH and its crew. They took the burden, the obstacles standing in front of them when Disney cut the show and are STILL producing banger after banger this season. At 10% of their power, the show is still incredible and yet it breaks my heart knowing that so much plot, development and even possible amazing fillers were lost with the cancellation. (Beach day, Darius and Hunter’s relationship, the previous G.G’s, everyone discussing how Luz leaving has been eating away at them and having a proper genuine discussion about it, learning about the other covens and their head witches, Amity and Luz’s relationship development, Hunter coping with his panic attacks and trauma, Willow and Gus continuously growing, etc.)
This show has filled my heart with such joy I cannot explain and there’s a genuine hole in my heart that it’s ending so soon. After all the media that I’ve watched, the fact that it’s still one of my favourite shows of all time pisses me off beyond words. Because I was robbed. This fandom was robbed. The cast and crew were fucking robbed.
“Didn’t fit the Disney brand”? Wth does that even mean?? This is a show I want my own kids to watch years later because it’s just that amazing. I would pass this show down for generations like a heirloom. Edit: If it didn’t fit the Disney brand why did they even green light it? Isn’t inclusion what you’re trying to promote? Just sounds like blatant homophobia to me.
So even if The Owl House’s ending ends up being lacklustre, disappointing, or down right horrendous, I can’t ever blame the team. After what they’ve done for us and what they’ve tried to save. I will only blame the mouse.
Screw the mouse.

I mean… cancer and pelvic inflammation is REAL deal.
There’s so many stories about women that became infertile because their men were having sex with other men behind their backs. The entire DL community in America is known to have caused a lot of emotional and physical damage to women.
Not saying bisexual/gay men that only engage with men, are careful and tested are at fault, but men that cheat with men are risking women’s lives 98% of the time. Anal sex isn’t prohibited in main worlds religions for nothing. It’s a known fact a man shouldn’t wet his dick in a vagina after an anus I’m sorry but you’re being obtuse on purpose. And women have all the rights to want to preserve their health and fertility.
You’re a transman, you of all people should know that.
WHERE DO I SAY WOMEN ARE OBLIGATED TO HAVE SEX WITH SSA MEN. WHERE.
I have said the EXACT OPPOSITE OF THAT SEVERAL TIMES.
I literally cannot spell it out any clearer for you fucking idiots.
I am taking issue with the historically fucking incredibly homophobic idea that ssa men are basically rabid raccoons who are giving women every disease. Not wanting to have sex with ssa men? What the fuck ever. That's your right even if I don't like your reasons. Spreading the idea that ssa men have diseases because they're ssa? That's BLATANT HOMOPHOBIA. And it has been a popular homophobic notion for DECADES.
HOW is me calling that out the same as me saying women are obligated to have sex with bisexual men?
Literally learn to read. Get off of Tumblr and go learn how to read past a fucking kindergarten level.

Karaoke Night at the Pineapple - IceMav. Side: HollyWolf, SunChip (Slider is here too)
Tumblr media
READ ON AO3
So I started a flashback for the ICE wip and this happened. Highlights include:
Off-duty drag queen Chipper.
A blatant Rock of Ages reference.
Slutty Slider.
Way too much 80s music and my algorithm hasn't been the same since.
SUMMARY: It had been three years.
Three years of watching the pair of them circle one another. Of watching them come so close and then back out at the last second.
Three years of listening to both of them, separate from one another, pine and thirst for each other. The 86ers have had it. It’s past time for something to be done. If they don’t smash Ice and Mav together and yell “Now kiss!” soon, they’re going to murder them both. It was sort of Chipper’s idea, mostly Sundown’s planning, and carried out through the intense peer-pressure only Wolfman and Hollywood could provide.
TAGS: Tom "Iceman" Kazansky/Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, Charles "Chipper" Piper/Marcus "Sundown" Williams, Rick "Hollywood" Neven/Leonard "Wolfman" Wolfe, Ron "Slider" Kerner being a slut in a gay bar, Fluff, Drag Queens, Drag Queen Chipper, Period-Typical Homophobia, Internalized Homophobia, Kissing, Karaoke, Seduction via karaoke, lots of 80s music references
WORDS: 4251
New Year’s Eve of 1989 found the 86ers, Hollywood, Wolfman, Sundown, Chipper, Slider, Maverick and the Iceman, lined up outside a club that had no name and only a neon pineapple flashing over the door.
Ice hadn’t been to the Pineapple in years. Not since he had graduated from the academy. Not since he had missed two of his friends funerals due to deployments. The only thing that got him back was the charity fundraiser. The Pineapple was putting on karaoke and drag to raise money for Act Up. Hollywood had cornered him and pressed until he relented to come along for it.
The line was full of familiar characters. Ice could see several drag queens in their towering heels and hair. He could see leather boys tucked under their daddy’s arms. He saw the butches, more than one with a pretty girl on their arm.
“Is this a gay bar?” Maverick wondered aloud as they edged closer to the door.
“Yes, Mav,” Ice said with a chuckle.
“Oh, cool!” Mav was looking around as though his head was on a swivel. “Wow, look at those shoes!” He pointed to a queen in incredibly tall red sequined boots.
“You want to try it, Maverick?” Chipper asked, a secretive smile on his face.
“Yeah, you could be regular height for once,” Slider teased.
“Fuck you, Kerner,” Mav replied automatically, no bite in it at all. “No, but I can appreciate it probably takes skill to walk in them.”
Chipper shrugged a shoulder, raising a cigarette to his lips and lighting it. “It does take practice, but it’s easier than you might think,” he said, taking a long drag and then passing the cigarette to Sundown.
“And you know this, how?” Slider asked, eyes sweeping Chipper from head to toe.
“I’ll have you know that you’re speaking to an off-duty queen,” Sundown said. He passed the cigarette back to Chip. “Miss Layna Pipe is an exceptional talent. Ask me how I know.”
The rest of the group cackled but Charles didn’t seem phased. He took another slow drag of the cigarette and blew the smoke into the air delicately.
“Why aren’t you performing tonight?” Hollywood asked, his eyes taking in the soft way Chipper was holding the cigarette now.
“Because I’m here to watch you idiots sing for once,” Chipper grinned. Marcus slipped a hand around his waist and pulled Chip back, placing his lips on the cigarette still in Chip’s fingers.
Ice had to look away. The gesture was frighteningly intimate. Shame and yearning bloomed together in his abdomen as he found himself staring at Mav. He wished he could be that confident about it. He wished he could be as open and uncaring as Sundown and Chipper were. He might have been self-assured and calm in an F14 but on the ground, faced with his own homosexuality and what he could not ever possibly have, Ice was an anxious mess.
When he tore his eyes off Mav’s laughing face, he found Chipper watching him. Their eyes locked and Ice felt the blood drain from his cheeks. He scrambled to compose his expression into a look of polite deference. A corner of Chipper’s mouth curved but he looked away without saying anything.
At the door a queen was taking cover-charges and chatting to patrons. She wore heels tall enough that she could look Slider in the eye evenly. Fishnets, the smallest leather shorts Ice had seen in a long time, and a cropped leather jacket with spangly fringe on the shoulder-pads completed the look. Her lips were bright red and smiling.
“Evening, boys! Cover is 5 dollars and all proceeds go to Act Up!” She began collecting their money. “If you want to join the fun, it’s a dollar a song. Take your prophylactics,” she passed them a condom each. “And have the best time. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do!”
The dim hallway was lit with yellow and green lights. Ice could already see clusters of people making-out against the walls. He watched as more than one head turned and watched them go by. He hadn’t seen that predatory look in such a long time it seemed to light a fire beneath his skin.
As much as he wanted to convince himself he didn’t need to do this anymore, it felt like coming home. Tom felt years of rigid defence folding away at last. He was among his people again.
“You good?” He asked Slider, suspecting this was his first time in a place like this.
“This is insane,” Ron said. Instead of reproach there was awe in his voice. He was smiling like a goofball and taking in as much of the room as he could see.
Ice warmed. Another line of unconscious defence folded down. He had been terrified his RIO would be disgusted by the open displays of queerness.
A loud voice was singing Like A Virgin and patrons were whistling and cheering at intervals. The room was dim except the bright area where the stage must be. The bar was lit with lanterns in the shape of pineapples. A skinny, short butch manned the bar with a willowy femme. The energy was electric, everyone laughing, smiling or dancing.
Maverick was just ahead, talking animatedly with Wolfman and laughing. Hollywood took Wolf’s hand and tugged him on through the crowd. Mav turned, finding Ice and smiling before carrying on through the crush of bodies with the others.
“We’re going to have a great time tonight,” Sli said, leaning down to say it into Ice’s ear.
Maverick couldn’t take it in fast enough. His eyes flickered around the room, drinking in the scene. Queens in their amazing costumes, he was a little obsessed with their heels. Men kissing fervently against the walls. A man dressed in little more than leather shorts and some sort of harness on his chest was seated in the lap of a far bigger man with a beard and a cigar.
Ice didn’t really have a response to that. He would be happy to make it out in one piece.
A foreign sense of rightness settled over Pete’s shoulders. He had been intensely aware of his same-sex tendencies through high-school but had pushed it to the bottom of his priority list in favour of the Navy. He never knew it could be like this.
He turned, making sure his wingman was still on his six as they wound through the crowd. Ice looked different somehow. Maybe it was his civilian clothes, maybe it was the lack of rigid tension in his jaw, but Mav ached a little for him. He wanted to make Ice look like that more often. He wanted to see him let go a little.
It had been like that in the beginning of their friendship. Tom had an astoundingly expressive face when he allowed himself to show it. Pete had made it his personal mission to see how many expressions he could put on Ice’s face in a given day. Sometimes it was exasperation, sometimes joyous laughter, and some days, when the memories of Goose were just too much to carry alone, it was deep empathy and sadness.
Somewhere in the last 6 months Ice’s face was beginning to close off to him again. It left Mav confused and irritated. He wanted more. He wanted Ice so bad he could have died. But the one time he had hinted for more, Tom had drawn away from him, pulled back and the icy persona had returned.
They broke through the crowd. Pete stopped a moment, causing Ice to bump into him from behind. He was transfixed by the queen on stage. She dropped down into the splits, body pulsing to the rhythm of the Madonna song. His brain lit with a wild impulse.
Ice pushed him forward, a warm hand in the hollow of his back. Mav resisted the urge to lean back into it the way he had seen Chipper lean into Sundown. Instead he turned, grabbing Ice’s forearm and beaming up at him.
“This place is awesome!” He said, pulling Ice along to where the rest of their group were snagging seats. “I want to do it!”
Ice laughed, shaking his head a little with one of Maverick’s favourite affectionately exasperated expressions on his face. His blue eyes were glittering from the stage lights, staring down at Mav.
“You’re never at a loss, are you?” Ice said over the noise.
Ice found himself sitting between Slider and Maverick along the wall of the club. Hollywood and Wolf were beside Mav; Leo reclined half off his own chair across Rick’s chest. Wood had his arm slung around his RIO, fingers slipped beneath the collar of his shirt and kerchief. To accommodate him, Wolf had passed his cowboy hat off to Hollywood and it was tilted back to avoid ruining the height of Wood’s hair. Every now and then, Leo would straighten a little and mumble something to Wood. Wood’s head would bend to him, his face intent and listening before a smile broke and he would laugh.
It only made him grin wider. His impulse was transforming into an idea. He needed to talk to Chipper.
Ice seethed with jealousy. How was it so goddamn easy for his friends? Until tonight he hadn’t even been sure what the nature of Wood and Wolf’s relationship was. He couldn’t tell if their constant horny banter was just banter or actual flirting. Now as he watched Hollywood laugh, eyes adoring as he looked down at Wolf before stealing a kiss, Ice had his answer. And it burned.
It was no safer looking at Chipper and Sundown. They had lit another cigarette and were sharing it again. This time practically sharing the smoke between their lungs as Chip held his lips an inch from Sundown’s. They were mumbling together about something, and from the almost wanton expression on Chipper’s face, Ice was glad he couldn’t hear them.
“I think we need more alcohol!” Slider announced before standing. “Help me out, Ice?”
“Sure,” Iceman said, glad for a reason to escape the affectionate displays of his friends. He loved them, he did, but they were poking hard at a wound Ice had never fully healed.
Slider led the way through the crowd, his height and bulk making it easy for him to cut a path. Ice almost rolled his eyes at the way eyes followed Slider. He was sure if the lighting was better he could see the drool on the chins of the men watching them go by.
They pressed into the crush at the bar, carving out a little space for themselves. Slider opened his mouth as though he was about to ask Ice something but was interrupted by a queen behind them.
“Well, hell, honey, aren’t you just a tall glass of water!”
As hard as he tried, Ice couldn’t contain his laughter. Slider on the other hand looked smug. He turned to face the queen with a look Ice knew very well.
“Thank you very much, ma’am,” Ron said. “I love that dress.”
She was slender with an impressive set of fake boobs tucked into a skin tight leopard print dress. Her hair was tall and blond, contrasting against her sepia skin. Tom couldn’t find it in himself to be surprised that Slider had complemented her, she was beautiful.
“Aren’t you a charmer,” she smirked. “Say, if your friend doesn’t mind too much, I’d love to borrow you for a little while, sugar.”
Ice’s eyebrows rose but he shook his head to show he wasn’t bothered in the slightest. Slider glanced at him from the corner of his eyes before giving a shrug.
“Sure,” he said.
“Perfection!” She grabbed his hand and towed him back into the crowd.
“What can I get you, honey?”
Ice turned to find he was finally being served. He shook off his amused shock and ordered a round of shots and chasers. With all the drinks stacked onto a tray for him and his wallet considerably lighter, Ice headed back to the group.
He set the tray down on the low table and looked around. Mav was missing from his seat. Chipper was no longer in Sundown’s lap and no where to be seen. Ice shook his head, collected his own drinks and sat back down beside Wolf.
“Where’d you leave the big man?” Marcus asked, looking around for Slider.
“He got picked up,” Tom grinned.
The other three looked surprised but impressed. Ice chuckled and turned his attention back to the current karaoke singers. A woman in a three piece suit and a man in double denim had their arms slung around each other’s shoulders as they belted out a Sam Cooke song. Ice winced, he had liked this song once but with they way they were butchering it, he wasn’t so sure now.
Ice was almost tempted to go and see if he could find Maverick. He told himself it was purely altruistic. He wanted to make sure his wingman wasn’t getting into trouble in some bathroom stall. He definitely wasn’t concerned or jealous over the idea that Maverick might enjoy a little trouble in the bathroom stall of the Pineapple with a random man. He was just being a good wingman.
The horrendous singing finally finished, the entire club applauding that it was over at last.
“That was shit,” Wolf said, straightening a little to get comfortable against Hollywood once more. “I could do better than that.”
“Oh, please do,” Hollywood smirked and tilted Wolfman’s head back. He kissed him deeply, tongue teasing at Wolf’s lips and the grip tight in the blond hair.
Ice looked away again. It was like they were torturing him on purpose.
“Alright you little freaks!” The MC yelled into the microphone and the crowd erupted into cheers. “It’s time for something very special indeed! Miss Kaya Cayenne has been prowling the crowd tonight, hunting up a fresh piece of meat!”
There were yowls like wolves from the far corner. Ice laughed, the jealousy fading once more as the fun of the performance caught him.
“So now, let’s give it up for Kaya and her chewtoy, performing Kiss!”
Enthusiastic applause broke out from the regulars.
“Holy fuck!” Hollywood cackled. Sundown began whistling and cheering. Ice could only stare, a delighted expression taking him over.
Miss Kaya Cayenne wore a skin tight leopard print dress and towed a tall, slightly blushing Slider behind her. The MC placed a chair in the middle of the stage and Kaya pushed Slider into it. He went very willingly.
“Ice you said he got picked up, I didn’t think you meant by Kaya Cayenne!” Sundown yelled over the opening strains of the Prince song.
“How was I supposed to know who she was?” Ice yelled back.
Sundown didn’t bother with a reply, only a dismayed look of disappointment before he turned back to watch the performance.
They watched with glee, hooting and hollering along with the rest of the bar, as Kaya gave Slider a lap-dance on stage, pausing with every chorus to lay a red lipstick kiss on a new part of his body. Ice looked around for Mav again, a little disappointed he was missing the fun.
When the song was over, Kaya laid a full, passionate kiss on Slider’s lips. The audience roared with delight as Slider’s hands appeared on the ass of the drag queen as she stood in front of him.
“Alright you two, take it somewhere else!” The MC hustled them off stage as the kiss didn’t show signs of slowing down any time soon.
Kaya turned, a theatrical expression of guilt on her face as her red lipstick was smeared. Ron wore a good amount of it himself, but he didn’t look guilty. He looked like the cat that got the cream and sauntered off stage still holding Kaya’s hand.
Ice gave a short sigh. At least someone was hooking up out of the two of them.
“Cheer up, Ice,” Hollywood said with a grin. “It’s supposed to be a party.”
He was in the middle of telling Hollywood to go fuck himself and his RIO, in that order, when the words of the MC cut across his brain like a whip. Ice snapped his head back to the stage and blinked.
There was Maverick.
Chipper slipped back over to their table and climbed back onto Sundown’s lap. If Ice could have torn his eyes away from Mav, he would have caught the incredibly smug expressions the other aviators were wearing. He would have noticed the way they all straightened in their seats and watched him closer as the opening guitar and drums of a Def Leppard song started.
But Ice only had eyes for Mav. His navy shirt had been unbuttoned to almost his bellybutton and his hair had been a little mussed since Ice had seen him last. Most of all, even as Mav lifted the microphone and started singing, his eyes never strayed far from Ice’s. He wore a feral grin as he punched out the lyrics to the opening verse of Pour Some Sugar On Me.
Ice felt himself warm. He couldn’t place if it was embarrassment or desire.
Mav began to dance, the crowd cheering as he dropped his shoulders to the beat and began a sultry strut across the stage. At the pre-chorus he stopped dead centre, eyes finding Ice again as he leaned back and dragged a hand down over his bare chest.
“Take the bottle, shake it up! Break the bubble! Break it up!”
Ice thought he might faint. He was definitely glowing red now.
“Pour some sugar on me!” The entire crowd sang along as Maverick ran a hand through his hair and tossed his head back. He shook his hips, alternating to gyrating at the crowd and then turning and dropping to a squat.
Thirsty, he needed beer. Ice took a long sip. He was bewitched by the way Maverick straightened and launched into the next verse.
He was really into it now, dancing, rolling his body along to the rhythm as he moved to the edge of the stage. When the second chorus hit, Mav stepped down and leaned in to the face of a few spectators, singing into the mic with them.
Ice laughed. He wished he could look away but every time he tried his eyes found Maverick again of their own accord. He was transfixed.
Through the instrumental of the bridge Mav started picking his way through the crowd until he was at their group. Ice shook his head at him in exasperated glee.
He laughed as Maverick shimmied down into Chipper and Sundown’s faces. Ice watched as Mav strutted to where Hollywood and Wolf were, stealing the hat from Hollywood’s head and cramming it onto his own.
Maverick dragged his finger’s over Ice’s shoulders before coming to a stop in front of him. His eyes flashed, cocky and mischievous, as he looked down at Ice and raised the Mic again.
“You got the peaches, I got the cream. Sweet to taste. Saccharine!”
Ice was stuck between mortified and turned-on. He had never wanted to disappear more. He had never wanted to throw himself on top of Pete and kiss him more. Especially as Mav cried “Do you take sugar? One lump or two!” And flung the hat back to Hollywood with flair.
He didn’t return to the stage but stayed right in front of Ice, singing the rest of the song to him as the crowd sang along with him.
Mav let the crowd carry the chorus as he ad-libbed, throwing his shoulders back rhythmically, swinging his hips, gyrating and running a hand over his own body as he did.
Ice didn’t know where to look. His eyes continually strayed to Mav’s hips as they rolled. Panicked, Ice would drag them back up to Mav’s face only to find him licking at his lips between ad-libs and staring into Ice’s eyes. So he would move his gaze to Mav’s chest but it was glistening with sweat and was practically begging to be licked. And the cycle would start again.
With the final words of the song, Mav threw himself down onto his knees at Ice’s feet, staring up at him and heaving for breath as he shouted “Sugar me!”
Their eyes were locked. The rest of the universe faded away as they stared at each other. Tom’s heart raced, his blood still hot in his veins. Pete was staring up at him, daring him and pleading him simultaneously.
Without even thinking about it, Ice threw himself forward. He wrapped his arms around Mav’s neck and pulled him into the most passionate kiss of both their lives.
He was wet with sweat and tasted of tequila and cigarettes. Ice licked at his lips, sliding his tongue into Maverick’s mouth with a groan. Their bodies were flush together, every point of contact like a brand on Ice’s skin.
Distantly, he could hear the noise of cheering and wolf-whistles. Someone might have been speaking as well. He didn’t fucking care, the only thing he cared about was sucking at Pete’s bottom lip and revelling in the small whine it caused.
Pete broke away, gasping for breath but holding Tom tight against him still. With a little effort, Ice scooped Mav up and resettled them in his chair with Maverick straddling his lap.
“God, you’re a fucking menace,” Ice mumbled against Mav’s lips between kisses.
“Uh-huh.” Maverick slid his fingers into Ice’s hair and held on. Any other thoughts fell out of Ice’s head again and he focused on sucking gently on Mav’s tongue.
“Fucking finally!” Slider’s voice was loud behind them and Ice deigned to release Pete’s mouth for a moment to look up at him. He was about to make a snarky comment when he caught sight of the state of his RIO and burst into laughter instead.
He was covered in lipstick kisses. Ron’s lips, jaw, neck, the opening of his shirt down his chest, were covered in lipstick. The longer Ice looked the more he realised the shades varied from pink to coral to red.
“Damn, Sli,” Leo said in his lilting accent. “Is there anywhere they didn’t get lipstick on you?”
“Nope.” Slider gave a suggestive wink. “Who’s turn is it to sing?”
“Mine!” Wolf dragged himself to his feet. Before he walked away he turned and leaned down to Rick’s face. He ducked his chin a little, smiling shyly at Hollywood. He seemed to be waiting for something.
“Off you go, baby,” Hollywood smirked and kissed him long and slow. “Go make me proud.”
Now that Ice had his hands on Mav’s ass, he found it much easier to watch the other pair. The shining happiness in Wolf’s eyes warmed Ice with happiness too. It was amazing what kissing Maverick could fix in his life. To that point, he turned back to Pete and stole another kiss.
As they waited for Leo’s song to come around, Mav ran his fingers through Ice’s hair again. He was smiling and watching Ice’s face intently.
“How long have you and Chip been planning that ambush?” Ice asked him, unable to keep his expression stern.
“I just decided tonight.” Mav shrugged. “I just wanted to make you melt a little. You’ve been cold lately.”
“That was so hot, I didn’t stand a chance,” Tom said. “I’m sorry for being cold,” He mumbled and kissed Pete slowly. “I didn’t think you’d want to risk it over me.”
“Because I never… ever… ever… take risks,” Pete said, punctuating each “ever” with a firm kiss.
Ice found he didn’t have a response to that. He simply continued kissing Maverick instead. They finally broke apart as Wolf was announced to sing next.
Mav shifted from straddling Ice to sitting side-saddle on his thighs an arm slung around Ice’s shoulders and his still-open shirt giving Ice a very distracting look at his sculpted and sweaty chest.
There was a hollered Yee-haw! From the back of the club as jaunty guitar started up and Wolf gave a slightly twangy performance of the first verse of Fishin’ In the Dark. He had a surprisingly lovely voice, a pure timbre as he sang the chorus staring lovingly at where Rick sat in the crowd. Hollywood was blushing bright red but never once looked away from his RIO.
The patrons joined in for the last chorus, ad-libbed yee-haws going up every other line and making Wolf stumble over the words as he laughed. The 86ers cheered and clapped as the song ended and Leo made his way back through the crowd to them. Rick stood to greet him, sweeping him up in his arms and holding him tight before letting go once more and cupping Wolf’s face.
Ice caught the “I love you” that passed between them. He smiled, leaning into Maverick’s chest and giving a sigh of contentment.
“What about you, Chip?” Maverick called over the crowd.
“You boys have to come back next week to see Layna in action,” Chipper grinned. “I think it’s about time we head back to the hotel.”
“It’s New Year’s eve!” Mav protested, “And it’s only half an hour from midnight!”
“Exactly.” Chipper’s smirk grew and he pulled Sundown to his feet. “We should start the new year off with a bang.”
The rest of the group groaned at his pun, but none of them argued.
