Just finally started reading again by reading Books of Blood and I'm obsessed with the very concept of The Yattering and Jack like imagine being a demon and getting assigned to make a guy go crazy except the man has weaponized being the most boring man alive to the point where at the end of the story it really reads like he's master/slave dom'd this demon

@twinkubus tagged me for book recs!! i'm going to go back to my 2022 reads bc i haven't read enough this year to get a full list i think. i'm tagging @hyumjim @rootbeerqueer @shield-sheafson @ravenkinnie @raven-harlot @bronanlynch if you wanna!
Books of Blood by Clive Barker
in order, i liked In The Hills, The Cities (dang), The Yattering and Jack (probably going to be the one I re-read the most), Pig Blood Blues (thinking hard about this one's characters and imagery), The Midnight Meat Train (good but forgettable)
Piranesi by Suzanna Clarke
this was pretty short and pretty fun? if you like descriptions and don't like plot, i recommend it.
Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado
my favorite stories: Mothers, Inventory, The Resident, Difficult At Parties.
The Mirror Season by Anna-Marie McLemore
this is a YA book. it's very good. it's about sexual assault and recovery.
Sorrowland by Rivers Solomon
the ending of this turned more scifi which i didn't like, but the majority is amazing horror.
The Between by Tananarive Due
REALLY RECOMMEND THIS. it's a very sad story first, and a horror story second. it's kind of like the shining but i like it more.
Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer
i only read the first book. i don't want any explanations. it's great.
We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson
sisters who are friends <3 it is a happy ending if you are crazy
Drawing Blood by Poppy Z Brite

POV: You're at your Detroit Public High School reunion
There are certain silences that are unique to every situation. There is the silence of a library, where all sound is muted by dust and countless pages and soft places for reading, there is the comfortable silence of a kitchen inhabited by friends. Warm and inviting, these silences relieve the ears from listening and the tongue of the need to speak, and provide all enveloped in them with a well-earned rest.
The silence that filled the holding cell of the downtown Detroit police station was none of these things.
There was a single window from which the weak light of street lamps spilled, reinforced with the same thick iron bars that separated the cell from the hallway, and a single bench that lined the far wall. It currently seated two occupants.
On the right end of the bench was Mackenzie Adam, hunched forwards, elbows resting on her knees. Her mouth was pressed together in a thin, grim line, and her hair hung in long, ropey strands in front of her face. Several dark bruises were rapidly forming on her face, a handful of angry red scrapes decorated the side of her cheek and forehead, and a line of blood slowly oozed its way from her nose.
On the left end of the bench was Henry Masterson, who leaned backwards, the back of his head resting on the concrete wall. He sported a darkening black eye, a nosebleed of his own, a split lip, and a patch of friction burn down the side of his face. At his side, one arm was protectively wrapped around a magenta helmet.
All in all, high school reunions did not typically end this way.
“Witwicky’s still a major poser.”
Mackenzie, or as most knew her, Mac, turned her head towards him, wearing an expression of exhausted, and somewhat disappointed, disbelief.
“Was that what that was about?”
The other occupant of the cell shrugged.
“You tried to decapitate Spike Witwicky with a punch bowl because-“
“He wouldn’t shut up about his lame-o chemical whatevers!”
Masterson raised a hand and splayed his fingers, indicating the exact level of lameness the chemicals possessed to him.
“Oh, you know how it is, it’s just a lot of intensive, difficult work with sodium chloride-“ he mocked, doing a poor imitation of Spike’s all-American, everyman voice.
“That’s table salt.”
“Whatever.”
Masterson went quiet for all of two seconds.
“And he’s still working for that noob Sumdac!” He went on.
Mac scoffed.
“Please. The one thing I remember about senior year physics was you fanboying over every new thing Sumdac Systems put out.”
“Well…” He furrowed his brows. “Yeah, but that was before I knew what a major buzzkill that guy is.”
“So he fired you because he’s a buzzkill?”
Masterson looked up at her from probing at his black eye.
“How do you know he fired me? You hate tech.”
Mac straightened, wiping the blood from her upper lip as she did so.
“You threatened to destroy all of Michigan on live TV. They were doing biopics on you for about a week after the fact.”
Her current cell-mate blinked.
“Yeah, between you, that… acid guy, Nanosec, Lugnut and Blitzwing showing up-“
“What and huh showing up?” Masterson asked, squinting. “Black and that dumb acid stuff was major news, and Nino’s in my supervillain Yatter group,” Mac rolled her eyes. “But why are you talking load-bearing connections all of a sudden?”
“Not the machine part; they were the first Decepticons on Earth after Starscream.”
She was met with a blank stare.
“Lugnut’s big and green, five optics, very firm believer in the Decepticon cause…”
The stare continued.
“Blitz is purple and tan, faces like a slot machine,” Mac swiped a finger in front of her cheek to demonstrate, “he’s a triple-changer, fire and ice…?”
Unending blankness.
Mac swung one leg over the other and crossed her arms.
“Isn’t jacking Cybertronian bodies your…hobby, or something? You really can’t tell them apart?”
“I can so tell them apart!” Masterson said indignantly.
There was a moment of cold silence again.
“Is Starscream the pink one or-“
“Yes-“
“Okay, okay! I was just asking.” He grumbled. “I got his body with a Unit a little while ago. It was wicked sick before that truck made me smash it when I tried to transform. And he called me a noob!”
Mac’s eyebrows shot up.
“Optimus Prime called you a noob?”
Masterson nodded ruefully.
"And he didn't even know what "leet" means! I liveblogged the whole thing on Yatter. It was a mega-hit, way more popular than that time I got that other Autobot’s body-”
“Who, Bulkhead?” Asked Mac, failing to hide a smile at the thought of Optimus Prime using any kind of slang.
“Nah, he was blue and orange, had this shield and lance that were in major need of upgrades.” He paused, as if trying to recall something else. “And the original head model had this mondo chin.”
“You're telling me-“ she paused, mouth stretched in a disbelieving smile, "you stole Sentinel Prime's body and fought Optimus with it?"
“Yeah… he ripped its arm off and hit me with it-“ Masterson said, confusion creeping into his voice.
He stopped short as Mac threw her head back and cackled.
“Okay, hold the phone!” The Headmaster threw up his hands and shifted on the bench, turning towards his former classmate.
“You sound like you did when you heard that a grift-pop cover of some late nineteen hundreds album was coming out. That's gossip, Adam. You know these bots, like, on a personal level.” He leaned towards her, excitedly tapping his feet on the concrete. “Gimme all the deets.”
“Okay, first off, you’re no better with the two thousand aughts, you screamed in the middle of Fowler’s English class when you found out HaxCon was coming to Detroit-“
“Which was totally warranted!”
“Second, I sounded like that because I knew it would be hilarious to watch it try to stack up to Madonna, and third, what makes you think I would tell you anything about the mechs whose bodies you like to snatch?”
“So you do know them!” Headmaster leveled an accusing finger at Mac. “How did that happen? You never worked for him, so Sumdac’s little twerp daughter couldn’t-“
“Watch it.”
Headmaster shrugged.
“I just always thought you’d end up in an underground analog band or something.”
Mac leaned forward from the cinderblock wall, propping the uninjured side of her face up with a hand. She sighed.
“To make a very long story short, I got shot in the head with a Cybertronian data cylinder beam and I run a bar for them now. And,” she tugged at her left sleeve, the purple of her insignia standing stark against the yellow, “I’m a Decepticon.”
Among the kinds of silence, the stunned variety is common, and it appeared here now.
“That raises, like… twice as many questions as it answers.”
“You’re friends with a guy who can run at the speed of sound and a man made of acid. That cannot be the weirdest thing you’ve heard this week.”
“Okay, Black is so not my friend-“
“ADAM!”
This voice followed a shadow descending the stairs into the holding cell, which in turn, belonged to the broad police captain currently on irritated duty.
“Yeah, Carmine?”
“That’s Captain Fanzone to you, Mac.”
He stopped at the door and began to rifle through a ring of keys. After one too many biometrics malfunctions, he had insisted that the low-level holding cells remain tethered to the good old lock and key.
“Anyway,” he went on, “your bail’s been posted.”
“My bail?” Mac rose from the bench as Fanzone slid the cell door open. “By who?”
“Yeah, who do you know that’d bail you out?” Asked an irate Masterson.
Fanzone shrugged and locked the door once more.
“Didn’t catch his name.”
Mac gave a short hum that was only slightly suspicious, and raised a single hand in farewell to the sole occupant of the cell, which was summarily returned.
“Whoever he is, he’s got one heck of a German accent.”

Look For You Yesterday, Here You Come Today   // LeRoi Jones [Amiri Baraka]
Part of my charm:                            envious blues feeling                            separation of church & state                            grim calls from drunk debutantes
Morning never aids me in my quest. I have to trim my beard in solitude. I try to hum lines from "The Poet In New York".
People saw metal all around the house on Saturdays. The Phone                                                                                             rings.
terrible poems come in the mail. Descriptions of celibate parties                                                   torn trousers: Great Poets dying                                                   with their strophes on. & me                                                   incapable of a simple straightforward                                                   anger. It's so diffuse being alive. Suddenly one is aware                   that nobody really gives a damn.                   My wife is pregnant with her child.                   "It means nothing to me", sez Strindberg.
An avalanche of words could cheer me up. Words from Great Sages.                               Was James Karolis a great sage??                               Why did I let Ora Matthews beat him up                                in the bathroom? Haven't I learned my lesson.
I would take up painting if I cd think of a way to do it better than Leonardo. Than Bosch Than Hogarth. Than Kline.
Frank walked off the stage, singing "My silence is as important as Jack's incessant yatter."
I am a mean hungry sorehead. Do I have the capacity for grace??
To arise one smoking spring & find one's youth has taken off for greener parts.
A sudden blankness in the day as if there were no afternoon. & all my piddling joys retreated to their own dopey mythic worlds.
The hours of the atmosphere grind their teeth like hags.
(When will world war two be over?)
I stood up on a mailbox waving my yellow tee-shirt watching the grey tanks stream up Central Ave.                                     All these thots                                     are Flowers Of Evil                                     cold & lifeless                                     as subway rails
the sun like a huge cobblestone flaking its brown slow rays primititi           once, twice, . My life           seems over & done with.           Each morning I rise           like a sleep walker           & rot a little more.
All the lovely things I've known have disappeared. I have all my pubic hair & am lonely. There is probably no such place as BattleCreek, Michigan!
Tom Mix dead in a Boston Nightclub before I realized what happened.
People laugh when I tell them about Dickie Dare!
What is one to do in an alien planet where the people breath New Ports? Where is my space helmet, I sent for it 3 lives ago ... when there were box tops.
What has happened to box tops??
O, God ... I must have a belt that glows green in the dark. Where is my Captain Midnight decoder?? I can't understand what Superman is saying!
THERE MUST BE A LONE RANGER!!!
                           ****
but this also is part of my charm. A maudlin nostalgia that comes on like terrible thoughts about death.
How dumb to be sentimental about anything To cal it love & cry pathetically into the long black handkerchief of the years.
"Look for you yesterday                  Here you come today                   Your mouth wide open                   But what you got to say?"
                                     -part of my charm
old envious    blues feeling                                              ticking like     a big cobblestone clock.
I hear the reel running out . . . the spectators are impatient for popcorn: It was only a selected short subject
F. Scott Charon will soon be glad-handing me like a legionaire
My silver bullets all gone My black mask trampled in the dust
& Tonto way off in the hills moaning like Bessie Smith.

I pray that Cabinet of Curiosities will adapt a Clive Barker short story next... In The Hills, The Cities is probably not right for the budget. Son Of Celluloid could be so cool, and The Yattering and Jack could potentially be fun. Or Human Remains... The Inhuman Condition would honestly be fun especially if embracing how goofy it is while still managing the menace.
(Rawhead Rex has once been adapted as a film but by god that Sure. Was Something. Redeem it by adapting it into something good instead of... whatever that was.)

386 : Commentary Classics - Yattering and Jack / Quicksilver Highway
Edit:  This post was supposed to come out on Christmas, 12/25/2022, but some crazy happenings with my vacation prevented me from being able to post any episodes between then and now.  The next time we record an episode, I’ll recount the experience.  No now we’re bringing back this commentary classic with both The Yattering and Jack and Quicksilver Highway from 2016, to give it a proper number and bring it officially into the podcast. Anyway, happy belated Holidays, and Que Sera, Sera, right?
This one’s a double feature of the 1987 Tales from the Dark Side episode, and adaptation of the Books of Blood short story, “The Yattering and Jack” and second, the second half of the 1997 Mick Garris Anthology movie, Quicksilver Highway, Which is an adaptation of the Books of Blood short story, “The Body Politic”.

I have just realised that I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to watch a true to the source material, live action adaptation of Clive Barker's The Yattering and Jack.
With Jack played by either Jack Black or Jeff Goldblum.

The Yattering and Jack is the story by Clive Barker about a Pickle Salesman haunting a Minor, Gremlin like Demon.
Specifically, is a story about the titular Yattering being tasked by hell to curse Jack's life via the loss of property so to make him lose faith and fall into hell's clutches, and ending up having to move into Jack's house and having to deal with his flippant optimism and general obliviousness to the Supernatural.
(*Mirror Breaks by itself* Jack: "Oh boy, the foundations of the house must still be settling in" the Yattering: *Outraged wail of frustration*)
The Yattering gets so frustrated over Jack being so bloody flippant, even despite his brief moments of anger when his loved ones are at risk, that be breaks rule one of hell and Strikes Jack before damning him, thus being forced to serve him as a demon slave for all eternity.
Finally able to see the Demon, Jack simply grabs him by his neck and goes "You scared my daughter just now. Don't you DARE do that again!" Before ordering his demonic servant to fix the mess he made in his house.
Ending the story.

Zp head cannons, Whee!
Requested by @behemothrodan and technically @eclecticcoyote (you did say any zp post)
Ok, so what headcanons are we yattering about today?
Well let’s see…
1. What would Damian be doing during the Addi x Gustav date in ch 5
2. Who is Sahara crushing on?
3. When will Jill and Jack hook up?
Well, we can actually answer 1 and 3. And I don’t just mean with a theory.
This actually details wtf happens during the rest of the date, plus there’s the sketches video that’s still up on Vivz’s YouTube that you can check out.
It seems like… Damian actually doesn’t do much. He tries to, but it seems like he becomes more focused on goofing off with Eli
As for Jill and Jack, I have been trying my hardest to find this one livestream of Vivz where she was taking requests to draw (only) ZP characters, and talking with the audience. This video no longer seems to be up, which sucks. This was in 2019, and I distinctly remember her saying that Jack wasn’t going to end up with Jill, and his love interest hadn’t been introduced yet.
But unfortunately that’s just my word and… anyone else who can remember it. If it helps anyone, the stream contained a sketch of a love struck Jack, a confrontational Zill, Dawn O Dweedle, an angry Damian, a sketch of Kayla and a sketch of Eli. And these sketches weren’t coloured in, they were just sketches. But apart from that, let’s also look at the comic. Jill is in a relationship. That she’s happy in. I’ve seen so many people warp her boyfriend into being an abusive fuck,
And this is the part of the program where I’m making a call out post on my Twitter.com…(not really, but references, ya know?)
What is it with this goddamn fandom being like “oh no this poor boy wants a girl but she doesn’t feel the same way plus she’s in a relationship with someone else, this is unacceptable, let’s villanize the girl’s partner bc that makes sense!” This isn’t directed at anyone or any ship in particular. I’ve actually seen this in other ships like Damian x Kayla. Guys, can we just accept it when someone isn’t interested in somebody else? And is in a loving relationship with that person?
I have googled, and searched high and low for evidence that Jill’s boyfriend is a scum bag, and guess what? It’s entirely fan content. The only definitive thing we get on the boyfriend is from the comic, and that Jill really likes him, and they get along super well. So can we stop this needless tendency to be like “ah yes, abusive relationship” in order to push for a ship we want?
Also, let’s look at Jack in this equation. As he says in the comic, he’s happy for Jill. And you know what? Jill not knowing how he feels is on him. It shows how detrimental his lack of confidence is.
Now, there do exist old arts of Jack n Jill together. Artworks that come from the same time when Vivz was shipping Addi and Dame as a couple. So it’s likely that things could have changed. And by the way the story is going with Jack? I think it makes more sense for him to move on.
As for Sahara? I recall bits and pieces of info that suggested that she would be dated Zmir
Tumblr media
This guy. But there’s not much about that anywhere. Vivz, by her own admission, doesn’t do much with Sahara compared to the other characters. It does seem like at one point, she’d have a crush on Damian, but this appear to have been scrapped.
That’s all for today, apologies for the rant and for wasting your time
- Spooky

Hello,,, do u happen to have some book recommendations?? I'm trying to read more and ur taste with books/novels is rlly nice!!
Omg thank u 🥺💖(kisses ur forehead)
My #1 recommendation has to be dark matter by michelle paver. Its a ghost story about this group of dudes who go on an arctic research expedition during the 1940’s, and i just rly fuck with the aesthetic of the stifling isolation and paranoia and the darkness of the polar nights <3 plus it has to be my favorite gay horror book of all time
The fisherman by john langan: rly heavy lovecraft vibes, but without the racism lol. The descriptions of the monsters are fuckin sick
The exorcist by william peter blatty: a must for gay ex catholics. The movie is rly faithful to the book (it’s p much the exact same), but I find the book to be scarier than the movie? Idk, the way pazuzu is written can quickly go from hilarious to horrifying from one sentence to the next. Reading the book really made me love the movie that much more. Plus, karrasdyer rights
P much anything by clive barker. His writing is just really gruesome and sick, it's great. A few favorites of mine are; imajica (u can probably beat someone to death with this book, its so fuckin long. definitely worth it though), mister b gone (kinda tedious at times but i’d say it's worth reading for the problematic gay demons lol), books of blood (fucking loooooove these books!!!! Favorites of mine are pig blood blues, the yattering and jack, and dread), also of course the hellbound heart if you haven’t read it already.
Interview with the vampire by anne rice and then nothing else cuz her writing sucks. I’ve wanted to finish reading the vampire lestat for years and I just can’t do it…..
Lovecraft if you can stomach it :/ few favorites of mine are: pickmans model, the outsider, dagon, the shadow over innsmouth, the dunwich horror, the color out of space, and of course the call of cthulhu. Don’t let anyone tell you that at the mountains of madness isn’t boring, they’re fucking lying (cool aesthetic tho)
I’m still reading the hunger by alma katsu but my gay friends seem to love it so there u go
Can’t rly think of anything else cuz i'm illiterate and picky, so here u go!
