A month after returning from NOLA, I had a craving for beignets. That craving took me to The Rising Sun, a NOLA/Southern food sidewalk café. They have an amazing special, three freshly fried beignets and a coffee for $5. For real. And the beignets are made to order. They serve Café Du Monde chicory coffee.

The rest of the menu includes po’boys, fried chicken & waffles, salads, boozy drinks, and coffee. I noticed they use the wrong kind of bread for po’boys. Looks like they use ciabatta.

Three beignets & coffee ($5). The beignets are small (about 2 inches by 1 inch). I didn’t mind the size but the beignets were awful. They were darker, crispier, and greasier – that’s not terrible either. The interior tasted slightly raw. They should use Café Du Monde’s beignet mix?

Coffee with oat milk: Served lukewarm, ugh. Bitter.

The space is interesting and reminded me of New Orleans: jazz music, all black tables and chairs, black fence, black wall, black chandeliers, black planters. I tried to place my order at the kiosk but the payment feature wasn’t working, so I went to the window and ordered there. Parking in the area is difficult.

Concept: Fire Lords traditionally dress like the stages of the sun to match their reign.

When Zuko is first crowned, he dresses in the colours of dawn. Bright yellows and pinks and even purples. He starts to wear more traditional crimson-and-gold robes after a few years, the colours of midday when Agni is at his strongest. And towards the end of his reign, when he's getting ready to pass the crown onto Izumi, he starts dressing like the setting sun.
