!TW: Mentions of Self harm
Yunjin's POV
"Chaewon Unnie, I'm heading out now!" I yelled as I began wearing my shoes.
"The cafe again?" Chaewon asked, a little smirk on her face
"Yeh, wait, what's with that smirk?"
"You seem to be going to that cafe almost every day, Jennifer." Chaewon said, using my english name to tease me even more.
"I just go there to study alright? It has nothing to do with Y/N." I grumbled as I felt myself blush
"That's funny, I never said anything about Y/N." Chaewon smirked, as my face contorted in realisation.
"Aish Unnie, you're so mean." I pouted a little, as Chaewon ran to her room, shouting, "Have fun with your Y/N"
"HE'S NOT MY----oh for fu-"
Sakura then seemingly appeared out of nowhere next to me, "No cursing at home, if Eunchae picks it up...."
"My bad Sakura-Unnie." I smiled sheepishly
"It's fine, go for your date already."
"You too?" I said, groaning at the constant teasing that I was sure was not going to end anytime soon
"Hey Jennifer" I heard as I walked into the cafe. I looked toward the noise and saw Y/N with a small smile on his face. I smiled and waved back at him, sitting in the same spot I did yesterday.
Walking up to the counter, I saw Y/N with someone else? That's weird, I assumed Y/N always worked alone. They were whispering to each other, as I saw Y/N smack that other girl on the shoulder as the only words I could make out was, "the one for you". Hmm, that's weird. Also, are they dating? That would suck...
My train of thought was broken as Y/N walked up to me with slightly less severe eyebags and a small smile.
"Hey Jennifer, what can I get for you today?"
"Hi, can I get a Teh C Siew Dai?"
"Wait, you know what that means?" Y/N said, a look of surprise splashed across his face
"Oh, I looked up the drinks on the menu."
"It's Cantonese I think? I found out about it in coffee shops in Singapore, and they taste awesome. That's why I brought it here."
" Wait, you own this shop?" I said, shocked at the revelation
As he nodded, I asked, "Wait, then why did you work here on your own. Up till today, with her coming," I said, pointing at the other girl behind the counter, " I always saw you work by yourself for what I have to assume is 24 hour shifts. Don't you sleep?"
Y/N gave me a small, seemingly a little sad smile, saying, "Until recently, I didn't have to."
I was about to ask what that meant, before I was interrupted by that girl who was behind the counter, "Sorry to interrupt the date but could you get the queue moving Y/N?"
Y/N glared at the girl who sheepishly chuckled, before running off.
"If you need help with computing, do call for me alright?" Y/N said, as I smiled gratefully and headed to my seat
This time, instead of me being called up, I saw as the girl walked up to me with my beverage. Minji's her name I think? She set my drink on the table, with a paper attached to the base like before, but the handwriting seemed different this time.
" xx-xxxx xxxx That's his number, good luck:)" I looked up in shock as Minji walked to me and whispered, "You were smiling through the whole talk with my brother, in a way that isn't how you look at a friend or acquaintance, it was kinda obvious, Good Luck Jennifer:)."
Hearing that, my blush got even more intense as I did not realize how obvious I was being.
As I did my work, I found myself stealing glances at Y/N, and curiously, I caught him doing the same, as we caught each other's eyes as we both immediately pulled away, for one of them I could swear there were a few times he was blushing? Focus Yunjin...
As I continued my work, I suddenly felt someone near me, looking up to see Y/N standing in front of me.
"Hey, whatcha doin?" Y/N asked as he gestured to the seat in front of me
I nodded as he sat, replying him, "Ahh nothing, I'm about to start the lecture on stacks right now, not fun."
"Ahh, OOP(Object Oriented Programming), a great joy to many." Y/N said as he chuckled, setting down to beverages on the table
"Pardon me, but shouldn't you be working? I didn't ask for any help and there are customers right now."
"Oh, well, Minji can handle the crowd for awhile, and well, I wanted to talk to you a little." Y/N said with a shy smile
"Oh, okay..." I said, a small smile on my face, but really nervous. I may be 21 but I've never really, y'know, dated or been in love really. This feeling I'm feeling, was new.
The two of us sat down and for a short while, an air of awkwardness floated in the air, Y/N on multiple occasions looking like he was going to say something, before retracting it. On the other hand, I was too nervous to say anything...It was an odd feeling for me. In my friend group of 5, I was always one of the noisiest and hyper people, but now, in front of him, I...froze. Think Yunjin think!
"So, what made you want to establish a coffee shop?" I asked
"Oh, well, my father loves coffee and teas, so when I was young in Singapore, he would always bring me to coffee shops to drink coffee and tea. So when we moved to Korea, I decided to make this cafe, to sell coffee and tea that I loved, to let others love it too." He said, smiling as I assume he thought of his fond memories.
"That's cool, how much did this place cost though. Land at this place isn't cheap if I remember correctly."
"Oh, that's no worry for me, My dad owns a relatively big company here, so this land is just one of his subsidiaries."
" gasp, NEPOTISM." I jokingly said, as Y/N shrugged.
"So, Y/N, this might be a little quick, but, "
its now or never Yunjin
"Are you in a relationship?"
A look of pain shot past Y/N's face, as he quickly lowered his head.
Huh Yunjin you idiot
"I'm so sorry Y/N, are you okay?"
He looked up at me, his small smile now becoming much smaller, barely a grin.
"No worries, it's just... I was... could we do this else where Jennifer?"
"Sure Y/N. And call me Yunjin."
"Oh, Yunjin, that's a beautiful name." He said, as I blushed at his comment. Even when he was sad and down, he still finds a way to make me feel weak in the knees.
We both walked in the nearby park as I waited for Y/N to be comfortable enough to start talking.
"Yunjin, what I'm about to tell you, do not tell Minji alright? She doesn't know about some details and if she found out, she'd be worried sick, right before whooping my ass."
I nodded as Y/N took a deep breath
"Her name was Diana. And I loved her. We dated for around 5 years, and I thought she was the one. On our 5 anniversary, I booked a hotel room for us. Not to fool around, but to spend quality time with her, cuddling and just resting. I was also going to propose to her. But she didn't show. I went out of the hotel to find her, only to find her near the side of the hotel, making out with some guy I had never seen in my life."
Tears falling from his face as he told me his heartbreaking story, and all I could do was stand there, unsure of what I could do.
"Turns out, she got with me for my money. Everything I bought for her, every gift, every dress, the money I gave her for her shopping sprees, she just gave it to her real boyfriend, as they profited off my ignorance. Once I found out, I immediately cut her off, to which, she shrugged.
"Took enough from you, you idiot", that was how a 5 year relationship ended. You'd think that was where my torture would end, but no. You remember how you talked about me working 24 hour shifts, and not sleeping? And my answer was..."
"You didn't have to." I muttered out, not liking the direction this was going in
"I tried everything I could, I burned everything I even vaguely associated with her, her pictures, her clothes, everything. But it didn't work. Every night. I dream, the same dream. And the dream never ends. I dream of when I was happy. I never remember what actually happened to me in real life, but those dreams feel so...real. And it isn't on repeat. The dreams go linear, as if it was telling me what could have been, if she wasn't tricking me to begin with. I was happy."
"But, if your dreams are what makes you happy, why not sleep more? Enjoy what you can."
"What was that one Batman quote? There can be no true despair without hope. The dreams feel real, but when I wake up, the life that made me happy gets ripped out of my arms as Diana haunts my nights. Every single night. The only thing that hurts more than being stabbed, is taking the sword out, then being stabbed again. Every morning, all I felt was despair as I knew the real world was real, and that my dream was just a dream. No happy ending, no happiness."
"So that's why you didn't sleep... but how? No matter how strong you are, you need sleep."
"I own a coffee shop Yunjin. I sleep for around 10 minutes a day. Any longer, and she comes for me."
I slowly reached for Y/N's hand, but seeing him flinch, I quickly withdrew my hand.
"Sorry, but this isn't a healthy way to cope Y/N... I know I can't say I've been in your shoes, I've never even been in a relationship, but I know that is not healthy."
"I know that Yunjin, but what can I do? I tried to end it all, didn't work." Y/N said, chuckling bitterly.
My eyes widened in shock as I took a close look at Y/N's wrists, seeing small scars across his forearm.
"This can't be the answer Y/N..."
"I know, and I think I've found the answer."
"What is it" I asked, curious and hopeful that maybe Y/N could find some way to deal with all the pain he felt.
"You."

you are perfect
requested: yes
genre: angst, a little fluff
masterlist
You blearily rub your eyes open as you groan and reach for your incessantly ringing phone.
You roll your eyes as you read the contact name, and lazily press the accept call icon, eyelids fluttering shut again. “Lin Chaoze. It’s 7am in the morning you better have a good excuse-”
“Y/n, do you know where the vomiting medicine and antacids are? Zhangjing had been puking since like 6.30am after his black coffee and I have no idea where that damn medicine is-” Chaoze rambles out.
The moment the name “Zhangjing” leaves the younger’s lips, your eyes had already snapped open, body automatically leaping from the bed, the phone in the clutches of your shoulder and face as you struggle to wear some decent clothing on, words in a mumble as you tell him to hold still and wait for you to bring the medications over.
You grab the medicines, that are packed neatly in a ziplock, from the table and rush out of your apartment, nearly tripping as you stumble down the stairs, rapidly knocking on the boys’ dorms.
“Where’s Zhangjing?” You say worriedly as you gently push Yanjun aside to enter the dorms. Technically speaking, only male employees are allowed to enter the boys’ dorms, but you use your title as an excuse, always saying that a “manager should have the authority to enter the dorms in order to do their job properly.”
“Bathroom” was the curt reply and you run towards the room where the gagging sounds are coming from.
Beads of cold sweat slid down the pale forehead, the eyes dull and exhausted, the lip trembling as a sheen of sweat causes it to glisten under the light. “Chaoze, do me a favour and get a glass of water please?” You instruct the boy and kneel down, a soothing hand rubbing familiar circles on the Malaysian’s back, and the other busily taking out the different medications.
You whisper soft, comforting words into his ear, telling him it will be okay. Eventually, the heaving slows and gentle puffs of air replace it as he slumps into your arms, drained from the stomach disaster.
Chaoze hands you the glass of water and you gently guide the pills into Zhangjing’s mouth. Gesturing for Yanjun to come over, you softly tell him to carry Zhangjing to the couch, while you calm the other boys down and get them ready for practice.
“Tell Trainer Chen that Zhangjing won’t be coming for class today-”
“I can go for class.” A weak voice cuts from across the room. Sighing and with a roll of your eyes, you ignore the other and continue. “I’ll write an excuse letter. Tell her to get it from me-”
“I said I can go.”
“And, as your manager, I say you can’t go.” Your sharp words sew his lips together and he stays silent, but you can still feel the doe eyes boring holes through your back.
Once the boys are all shoved out of the door and it closes shut with a soft click, you make a light drink for him, some teh-c siew tai, tea with milk, less sugar. Healthy, not stomach upsetting, and his next favourite drink.
As you kneel down to carefully placing the hot mug on the table, your eyes, as always, trace the soft features of Zhangjing’s face.
-
He had only joined the company for a year, but you could tell that he was bursting at the seams with potential and talent. You loved to check up on the boys when they had vocal practice because Zhangjing’s sweet voice and fleeting melodies never fail to brighten up your day.
He was anything but shy. When he came from Malaysia, you have to admit, you were a tad bit worried for him. China is far from his home in JB, and the culture here is different as well. But his bubbly, loud personality captivated all of you, even ice cold Yanjun. He broke down barriers with ease, fitting in perfectly into the Trainees18 family.
And while you love all the boys equally, you can’t help but have a bias for Zhangjing.
I mean, being a manager is tiring. Paperwork, paperwork, scolding the boys, arranging schedules, arranging fanmeets, arranging security, there’s a lot you got to take care of. It was getting a little boring, really, and it’s exhausting; you’re like a walking zombie, everything black and white.
But then, a certain Malaysian comes into your life, weaving his way through your life with his clear voice, leaving beds of sunflowers and rows of daisies wherever he went, painting your life with an entire spectrum of colours.
-
A light flick on your forehead startles you out of your thoughts, and you glare at the boy who weakly smiles back.
“How long have you been staring at me, love?” Your eyes almost roll out of your head and you resist the urge to gag as you gently tap his cheek. “You should stop accossiating yourself with that playboy Lin Yanjun.” You push yourself up and grab your phone that has been absolutely buzzing for the past 20 minutes, missed calls and thousands of texts from superiors and what not.
“I got to go. Have a good rest ok? I’ll come back to check on y’all before you guys leave for the program.” Eyes stuck to the phone as you start to dial numbers, fingers wrapped around your rest cause you to look up, raising an eyebrow.
“.....You’ll watch Idol Producer, right?”
“Of course, I will.” You say easily, fingers lightly running through his brown locks.
He smiles softly and you clench your fist lightly, resisting the urge to run your fingers over his smooth cheeks.
“I’ll miss you.” The soft voice resounds in your heart and you hold back the teardrops.
Originally, you wanted to give him his gift when you sent them all off, but looking at your schedule and the puppy eyes, you are probably not going to send them off. So you carefully take out the necklace you have for him from the pocket of your jacket, and place it in his hands.
“Wear it when I’m not around, okay?”
You don’t wait for his reply, because your tears are threatening to slip out of your eyes and down your face, and so, you give him a wobbly smile and turn around, never looking back.
-
“Dajie!*” You say cutely as you put the phone on speaker. The boys have been away for 2 months now, and although managers aren’t allowed to have direct contact with them, you had a friend who was working in the same line as you, for iQiyi. From time to time, you would call her and catch up with her, talking about mundane work, to the best security companies, to how the boys are going.
“Ey, y/n! How are you doing?”
The conversation carries on as you rant to her about your terrible day at work and your worries and all.
“Let’s not talk about these anymore. How are the boys?”
She chuckles and replies, “You are always asking about them! They are fine, doing quite well, I would say, especially Lin Chaoze, Lin Yanjun and You Zhangjing.” Your ears perk up at the name, but you just hum in reply. Your friend continues on, saying, “You Zhangjing, especially. His vocals are wow, everyone is just so amazed. And he eats like no one’s business! We had to ask the chef to cook an extra portion just for him.”
An uncontrollable smile finds its way onto your face, happy that he was eating well. You were concerned, to say the least, knowing how Zhangjing can is an emotional, soft child, who can get easily hurt by others.
When you saw the comments on weibo, and heard about his nickname “You Zhangpang”, while you had laughed along with your colleagues, an uneasy feeling tumbled around in your stomach. You were glad he wasn’t taking any of those things into consideration and was just happily munching on his food, looking genuinely blissful.
-
Looks like you’ve got it wrong.
You run towards the ward, pushing aside all the nurses and almost scream in frustration as you see the pale boy lying limp on the bed.
“What the hell?!” You scream at the iQiyi staff once you’ve exited the room. “Do you not look after them? Do you not tell them to stop when they’ve pushed themselves too hard? Do you not take note of who eats and who doesn’t?” A colleague of yours tries to pull away, but your anger fuels your strength and you break from his grasp.
“His performance is in a few days, tell me, how are you going to fix this?”
“Look here, ma’am. This isn’t our fault-”
“Not your fault!?” You rub your temples in frustration and go back into the room, telling the other boys, in the sharpest tone, to get out, slamming the door behind them.
-
“You Zhangjing.” Your voice softens, but only by a bit. A storm is raging inside of you, and no one can rein it.
“What the hell were you thinking about, when you decided to starve yourself for two meals and practice without stopping? Are you out of your mind?”
“I just...wanted to, you know, slim down a little before the performance. I’m sorry.” He replies in a small voice.
You glare at him and spin around, throwing your arms in the air, going over to the window, allowing the biting winds to calm yourself down.
“What the hell are you sorry for?” Turning towards him, you stare at him with a piercing gaze, causing him to flinch.
“You Zhangjing, listen carefully.
“You are perfect, you are enough. You don’t have to change yourself to please someone else. Why are you letting someone dictate your life? Why are you letting them judge you? Why do you even think you are fat? You’re not even remotely overweight, dumbass.
“Even if you were fat, for whatever reason, so what? Who the hell cares? It’s 2018 for god’s sake, people need to get over themselves if they can’t accept people of different shapes.”
You take in a breath, eyes never leaving his.
“But..”
“But what?”
“The CEO said I needed to slim down…”
“You Zhangjing, listen carefully. I don’t care what that bastard says.
“The next time you try to pull such a trick again, I will be pulling you out of the program. Got it?” You snap at him, huffing as you took a seat next to him.
As the doe eyes search yours, apology overflowing those brown eyes, they rein back the storm in you, calming the thrashing waters.
-
“How are you feeling?”
“Better..” He mumbles and sneaks another glance at you, lips breaking into a smile when he sees your face soften, no longer hard and furious.
“Well, on the bright side, we all get to see you again.”
Rolling your eyes, you look away as you blink back the tears, heart clenching at his soft voice. How can anyone be cruel enough to hurt someone so pure, so innocent?
“Y/n....I really missed you…” He thinks it was a whisper, but you hear every word of it.
You hum in reply, fingers playing with the white sheets.
“Did you not miss me at all?” He feigns hurt but you can tell, that under the facade, he is genuinely curious and just a slight bit hurt.
“Of course I did.” From your side view, you can see him slightly nodding his head, his white teeth capturing the pale, chapped lips and you mirror the action, biting your lips, almost tearing the skin.
“....What do you think of our performances?”
“They look pretty good to me.” You reply quickly, words tumbling out as your palms start to get clammy. You wipe the sweat of your jeans.
“Are you okay?”
“I’m fine.” You say, abruptly looking up, eyes automatically tracing his features.
From his amazingly clear forehead to his high cheekbones, to his smooth skin, to his cute nose, to his pale lips….you gulp and look away.
“Look, I got to do some paperwork-”
Something light and fleeting grazes over your lips, cutting your words off as your eyes instinctively squeeze shut. Heartstrings are fragile things and they pull up as they twist and turn, a mess, just like the aimlessly flying butterflies in your stomach.
As he pulls away, you breathe out a breath you never knew you were holding in, oxygen filing your lungs again. A light smile plays on your lips as you pull him back in, hands gently cupping his face as you place a soft kiss on his lips, adrenaline coursing through your veins, his lips captivating yours, making you addicted to him.
BANG
-
“How do you explain this?”
“What?”
“I literally just caught you kissing my employee! My girlfriend, cheating on me, with a trainee! The absurdity of it!” He screams in frustration, eyes shooting darts at you. But it doesn’t affect you at all, and the monotone voice you use for business matters coats your words and you shrug.
“If it helps, I’m resigning.”
“You wha-what? Look, you can’t just run away and it’s not about your job, y/n, it’s about the fact that you cheated on me-”
“Oh, so you cheating with my secretary is completely fine, but this isn’t?”
“That was an accident.”
“No it wasn’t, you coward.” You threw a bunch of papers at him, screenshots dating way back to a couple of years ago. “I have evidence, you bastard.”
“And I just saw you kissing You Zhangjing!”
“We aren’t even a couple anymore! You said you didn’t want to break up because it would be embarrassing for you, that you got dumped by a girl, by your employee! You said it would make you look weak, so I did you a favour and didn’t say a word about it, and pretended like we were fine. But we both know, we aren’t actually dating anymore.”
“And how do I explain that to the rest of the employees?” He says, voice pleading at you. Helpless, worthless, weak. Face always mattered to him the most. Appearances were a lot more important to him. Surface, shallow, a whole jerk.
“Why do you even need to explain to them? Look, I really can’t care less. I’m resigning, I’m leaving, I’m not going to stay in your clutches anymore and let you control my every move anymore, even taking a cut from my pay, saying that it’s for the damn facade.”
“.....Where are you going?”
“Far from here, far from you, going for a break.” You mumble, before looking back at him, the intensity in your eyes causing him to look away, bottom lip just slightly trembling.
“One more thing. Listen, I initiated the kiss, it wasn’t You Zhangjing’s fault. If you cause any problems for him, including the fact that you are requiring him to be underweight, I will come after for you, you understand?
“And you should know by now, I’m not one to be messed with.” An arrogant smirk on your face, you stalk out, leaving the gaping man behind.
-
You wanted to wait for the boys to finish the program and then leave, but, the moment you found out he has been telling You Zhangjing that he was fat, that he needed to lose weight, the moment you found out he was one of main reasons why You Zhangjing would force himself to drink black coffee, it was too much to bear.
On top of that, he has been so controlling over you, using your job to threaten you, and it’s getting suffocating. So you left.
You know, you have let down the boys, your team, everyone.
But for once, you decided you wanted to do something for yourself.
Staring out of the plane, happiness flows through you as hum to “It’s ok”.
-
BREAKING: PLANE CRASHES IN SOUTH CHINA SEA: 8 MISSING, 65 INJURED
On 5th February, C5200 was travelling from Beijing to Malaysia. A malfunction in the engines and a short circuit caused the plane to go out of control and it crashes into the waters at 5pm. The pilot managed to open the exits before the plane was submerged, and passengers were able to escape. However, unbeknownst to the crew and passengers, 20 passengers in the economy class did not have their life jackets.
UPDATE: FIRST CLASS PASSENGER ALLEGEDLY GAVE LIFE JACKET TO ANOTHER PASSENGER
….”They said to take it and shoved it to me. They were helping other people too. Really, if not for them, I wouldn't have survived.”
Silent tears roll down Zhangjing’s cheeks as his fingers caress over his ex-manager’s cold cheeks. Pressing a kiss on their forehead, he takes one last look at them, eyes brimming with tears as they roll down his cheeks in a steady stream.
In his hand, the necklace clinks.
-
Was he not enough of a reason, for you to be selfish for once, and slip the life jacket over your head, instead of someone else’s?
