If I were greedy…
I spend a disproportionate amount of time appreciating the addition of these four simple words to the "I really wanted to develop these myself…" line in the manga side scene with how much insight they provide the audience into Ray's mindset during this arc.
Greedy people don't pull off successful escapes. Greedy people risk getting their friends killed. Greedy people end up losing everything.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Chapter 181.1 | Chapter 4)
It's a layered message to Isabella as well.
You've known what I've wanted for a long time now. None of those three things have changed. You don't have to worry about me betraying you.
The way he looks at her when he says it, too; tries to make himself both nonthreatening to not invoke her ire or suspicion, yet aware enough to convey he can still competently complete his side of their agreement (along with a bit of pettiness, wanting to believe he has more control of the situation and not wanting to let it seem like she can pull a fast one on him. Knowing what's to come in less than 48 hours is heartbreaking), all while having the most subtle sad and tired tinge to his eyes and subdued grin to mask it.
(Because what if things were different for the two of them. For all of them.)
Tumblr media
He already believes he's asking for so much, and yet…

Each Grace Field plantation receives new babies every two months, right? That makes six children per year. I think a lot about how, following the logic that children of the same age are closer, there were three children the trio was particularly close with and to whom they had to say goodbye. I really appreciate Ray's special chapter for giving us the chance to see the faces of this complementary trio:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We know their faces and their numbers (light haired boy: 13194; dark haired girl: 54194; light haired girl with ponytails: 92194), but I'd love to know their names as well :')

Made this cute little, secretive Ray cuz I'm so happy he got that whole extra chapter to himself. He DESERVES this spotlight. Like everyone needs to appreciate him, and realize that he is best boy, always have been, always will be.

Ray knows that he’s sending Conny off to her death. And it probably hurts him so much.
Tumblr media
I’m glad that this chapter came out. It really made me appreciate Ray a little bit more. And it really let me go back into TPN when I had mostly stopped thinking about it.

hello, i was late to the fandom so i might have missed out on this discourse but do we ever find out the real content of Ray's letter to Isabella? Is it something of a plot point the author hasn't developed in canon? If so, what would the plot be you think? Thank you so much!!
Same hat, anon 😎🤝😎 (coming up on my third anniversary of first discovering the series just this month)
Tumblr media
Shirai has never officially, explicitly stated in an interview what's in the letter Ray writes in chapter 22/S1 episode 7, but I've talked about this before and personally find it funny how he made a big deal out of the mystery surrounding it back in a 2019 Jump interview (translated here):
Tumblr media
When I feel most people’s first guess as to what was in it after the escape arc concluded was eventually confirmed in December 2020 with the release of chapter 181.3:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
A farewell letter from a son to his mother that reveals their biological connection when headquarters purposely kept it a secret.
Tumblr media
(Mystic Code Book Chapter 2)
It's meant to be such a huge revelation it stops Krone in her tracks and deters her from digging around in Ray's room further to discover the rewards he's been receiving for six years and the lighter fluid he's been stockpiling for five.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Mystic Code Book Chapter 1 Q& A | Chapter 22; Krone evens whips out records she brought along in her suitcase from headquarters to corroborate what she's read.)
I've also talked before about how Ray's retaliation was threefold in its pettiness, and this letter falls into points 2 & 3. After years of bottling up his anger and resentment toward her, he wanted to incriminate her by implicating she at very least knew about the escape, potentially that she even helped with it, all because she knew of their biological connection and wanted him to survive (the same thing he wished she would have said to him back on his sixth birthday at the gate):
Tumblr media
(Chapter 181.1)
He found it sickening how she could choose to prolong her own life by sacrificing all his siblings over the course of her tenure at Grace Field. With this, he thought he would seal her death at the hands of the demons she groveled before like a dog, while he would die on his own terms as a human.
Tumblr media
(Chapter 14)
What he didn't count on was Isabella's prioritizing results over rules was something that was enabled by her mother, to the point they were willing to remove Krone from plant no.3 altogether.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Chapter 23 | Chapter 181.3)
Ray assumed Krone did not have the means to contact headquarters like Isabella did, so she would keep the bait and bide her time until presented with the opportunity to reveal it to someone higher in the chain of command. Ray assumed Krone would still be at Grace Field at the time of the escape, and that after he was dead and the four other oldest kids were gone and headquarters was looking for an explanation for how a blunder of this magnitude could have possibly happened, Krone would show her hand to usurp Isabella's position.
It's why he's so caught off-guard when Isabella reveals she made a move first.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Chapter 24)
As for why Shirai gave conflicting information about this, I'm assuming he wanted to leave the door open for multiple possibilities before his health tanked and he began aggressively cutting off story branches so he could still complete the series under his own power and maintain his sense of artistic integrity.
Tumblr media
(October 2020 Series Completion Interview)
And that's how we arrive at the contents of the letter being what a lot of fans suspected from the jump.

This is another unintentional funny line because Norman is like “I clocked your dumbass the second Krone showed up” to sort of rub in how could Ray ever even think to betray them. As if he wouldn’t notice.
And for the most part, he keeps his cool about it during the two weeks prior to confronting Ray.
But when he lets the mask slip the tiniest bit—

You cannot tell me Ray didn’t have thoughts about Emma, Don, and Gilda bringing Phil in on the plan that he voiced at some point to them during the months they spent traveling looking for the Seven Walls I refuse to believe it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Chapter 181.1 & Chapter 100)
This is different from bringing Don and Gilda in on the escape plan. They’re full participants in it and as such, he believes they deserve the full truth.
Tumblr media
(Never going to be over the adorably appalled expression Demizu gives him here)
Tumblr media
(Chapter 11)
Plagiarizing myself from the Don & Ray post but he gains nothing from wearing his heart on his sleeve here when it comes to his plan, but for the ease of his own conscience, or at least as much as he can afford given everything that’s on the line for him, he doesn’t want to put any undeserving parties through any more emotional anguish. Their world is already such a cruel place, and he would rather avoid contributing to that if at all possible.
Phil though, Phil is all alone in carrying this. More alone than even Ray was in a way. Ray at least didn’t have to hide that he knew about the house’s true purpose from the person who could ship him out at a moment’s notice. He also eventually had Emma, Norman, Don, and Gilda to share in that burden, but none of them had to think about bearing it alone themselves.
Tumblr media
(Chapter 100)
Feel like that would eat at all of them some days, but Ray’s perspective on the matter is unique.

Love the way the anime adapted this bit of the exchange between the trio in chapter 27 and chapter 28 where Ray reveals he hasn’t experienced infantile amnesia.
Tumblr media
You can feel the profound weight of a lifetime of suffering and loss on his face as he grapples with trying to keep his emotions out of what he’ll say next, because he never brings up how what happened in all the years prior made him feel, not even when Emma provides him with an opportunity where she prompts him with speculation about what it must have been like seeing dozens of their siblings off and being powerless to do anything about it in episode 5
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Chapter 181.1)
when she remembers how shaken up Ray was when they were younger (even going so far as to say "but…Ray is never happy" in the "NER in Bird Cages" short story in the first light novel, though in perplexity as opposed to being passive-aggressive about it) and now finally has a devastating answer as to why.
But Ray never explicitly colors his recollections with emotions when discussing them with Emma and Norman, how what was happening around him and what he and Isabella did made him feel, and only displays the full anguish of what that did to him when he's speaking with Emma on the night of January 14th. While the two knew Ray intended to kill himself to serve as a distraction for them to escape, Emma never knew how deeply he internalized his self-loathing and the belief that he deserved to die for his actions and inaction until that eventful night, otherwise she would have asked one of the other kids to go talk to him, if not just have said “fuck it” and did it herself, Isabella's watchful eye be damned. She would not have let him suffer to that degree so long on his own; it goes against every fiber of her being.
Ray keeps all of that inside though, because he doesn't want their pity. He doesn't believe he deserves any when he actively chose to become Isabella's informant and which children would be shipped out early due to his experimentation with the trackers, least of all from the two people who are firmly categorized as genuinely good and worth saving in his mind. He loves them enough to squash down his humanity and die for them.
Yet there’s also that desperate (and what he considers selfish) desire to not be alone in this anymore.
Tumblr media
I imagine among the vast array of emotions he was experiencing on the day of Conny's shipment was a guilty sort of excitement at being able to talk with them about the truth of the house, though he would never admit to it during this time because he deems his wants as irrelevant and unworthy.
Tumblr media
But even after so much is out in the open between them now—how he tried to poison them against Don and Gilda and the other children by implying one of them was a traitor, how he experimented on at least one other child to ascertain how the trackers functioned, how he’s been Isabella’s dog for half his life—they still care about him and believe in him, and are earnestly reaching out to connect with him.
In a raw and selfish moment—because he's been steeling away his heart for years so that his resolve doesn't crumble—Ray gives in to those wants and reaches out to meet them. (There’s the argument that he’s desperate and willing to concede almost anything to strengthen his credibility with them so he can get his plans back on track and secure his end goal, but I like to think it’s mixed with this too.)
Tumblr media
There's more focus on Norman than Emma during this part, likely as a callback to the tense confrontation they had during episode 5 where Norman was very cool and trying to quell how hurt he was by Ray’s betrayal and deceit. Now he’s taken what Emma said to heart, and it led him to the realization that Ray was willing to suffer in silence and die for them, willing to poison his relationship with them so they would distance themselves from him and so his death would cause them less grief.
Tumblr media
(Chapter 29)
This is also after Norman’s fully committed himself to dying for Emma and Ray (and the other Grace Field children) and lied about what he plans to do the following day, so there’s this need for as much honesty between them as they can give because he hates leaving off on such terms. Unlike the time where he instigated a confrontation between them and went in combative in the event Emma was wrong, here he’s approaching Ray with a genuine desire to understand him. He wants to give him a chance to vent, know more about the him that he kept under such rigid constraints for so long, and to try and internalize what Ray’s saying to draw strength from the next day as he walks to the gate. This also why he verbalizes Ray’s struggle of six years of collecting parts for the deactivator and the focus switches to it as a physical manifestation of Ray’s hardships and love he holds in his hands (with the anime altering the manga's order of events so Ray gives him the tracker before discussing his memories of Grace Field Headquarters to facilitate this).
The lighting leaves such an acute awareness in Norman’s eyes and such a haunted look in Ray’s while the former is more illuminated and the latter is in shadows. I love that Norman holds Ray’s gaze during this entire exchange and doesn’t look away even during the brief bit of silence, letting Ray know that no matter what he says, he won’t shy away from sharing the weight of his reality. He wants to understand him after he spent a lifetime of not being able to be honest about the things that hurt him the most. There’s layers of tragedy to that, one being that they’re both still holding back at this point, but there is some progress on the front.
Tumblr media
Likewise, how Ray’s eyes are obscured when he reveals he’s always known, and the way Norman doesn’t suppress his reaction as the light shimmers in his and the skin around them and his brow crinkles in muted grief. He vowed to himself not to look away at Ray’s suffering, but just like he quickly realizes the implication of Isabella being at the gate and how that’s reflected on his face in episode 1
Tumblr media
the gravity that’s implicitly woven into those three words is heartbreaking, and it strengthens his resolve that he's making the correct choice. Ray has carried this burden for so, so very long; now it's his turn to bear it (though the perceived cost is unfathomably cruel to expect of anyone, least of all an eleven-year-old).
And on Ray’s end, we have the perspective flip of this reflection:
Tumblr media
Because he remembers the years of Norman’s love and kindness when all Norman understood about the situation was that one of his two best friends was sad.
While he won't give up all his secrets to him and Emma, in this moment where they're on the precipice of potentially losing Norman if anything should go awry, he exposes another painful layer of his past.
It's a double-edged sword though, because while it does bring them all closer together emotionally, Ray assumes that by additionally appealing to Norman's logical side with the information he can provide him about headquarters, it'll convince him that hiding out in the forest for a few months is a viable option. In actuality, Norman's already made his final decision.

One thing that I appreciate about TPN is that it never revels in the horror of the act of systemic medical rape that occurs within the farm system, which easily could stray into being very gross and fetishy given how IVF isn't even around for a century by the times canon kicks off, but given the target demographic for the series we're originally confronted by the horror that is the demons commodifying children's bodies for consumption that provides dual upfront‚ visceral terror at the prospect of being impaled in the heart and then eaten, and a haunting‚ lingering despair at the dehumanization they've been subjected to.
Tumblr media
(Chapter 181.1)
Dehumanization that turns out to be completely unnecessary with the discovery of the evil blood, but that the ruling class actively works to maintain out of selfish decadence and entitlement. It's something that I appreciate the series being so upfront about, to the point where that commentary overrides my mixed feelings about the anthropocentrism of the demons striving to maintain human levels of intellect as the pinnacle of their existence.

What if uh...what if Michelle and Olivia? W little Ray
And AU with post canon Olivia and Michelle w Ray:(
Going to preface this with how amazing it is people will send me asks on topics I've had vague drafts of for ages but for whatever reason never published them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Evidence of my drafts and queue being fucking messes)
But yes, I'm still really attached to the idea of young sister candidates who still have siblings alive old enough to remember them being able to reunite with said siblings upon the farm system being dismantled, and one of the things that's most appealing about the Emma and Ray & Goldy Pond Resistance kids dynamics for me is them regaining that type of older sibling relationship after they had been the oldest siblings of their family for months if not two years since Susan was shipped out (this is also applicable to Norman with Vincent, Cislo, and Barbara post-imperial capital battle).
It's also a bit funny how CloverWorks provides a bit of foundation for this AU, saving Michelle from death because they wanted to save time and resources by reusing her model for one of the sisters that shows up in S2 episode 10.
Tumblr media
Arguably one of the best changes they opted for, though they do nothing interesting with it. There's so much melancholic and healing potential upon a reunion with the younger siblings who still remember her and Olivia after spending years in a cutthroat environment that fostered division and systemic exploitation.
With Ray specifically, there's the belief he failed them by letting them walk off to their fate without lifting a finger to stop it or even just provide them with a warning, anything to give them an advantage and show he loved and cared about them, but in his pragmatic planning, he prioritized Emma and Norman over them, and that old regret and shame resurfaces.
And they're left with that dawning, muted realization of "ah, that explains why he'd get so sad every time a sibling left."
Tumblr media
(Chapter 181.1)
Knowing he suffered in silence for so long and having been unable to provide him with a true sense of safety like an older sibling should, a new layer of sorrow tinging the memories of attempting to comfort him, sometimes with him maybe briefly lashing out due to something they said being unintentionally hurtful (e.g., "I'm sure they're happy with their new parents" because no they're not they're not they're not they're dead) but always ending with him curling in on himself and wanting to be left alone. Even during the few times it seemed like they were successful (though looking back, Susan and the collective efforts of Emma and Norman probably held the higher success rate), that ache is still present.
Again, lot of healing potential in that initial reunion hug between them and subsequent late night talks of mutual support where tales of their respective horrors slip out and worries over the search for Emma ebb and flow. (You could also go the route of him opening up about the full extent of his relationship with Isabella, though I'm firmly of the "there is no way in hell he is ever bringing that up until his 20s at the earliest unless prompted by an outside force" camp).
I would extend this out to all the older Grace Field kids from Ray through probably Nat though, if only because the first light novel already highlights Ray has a special attachment to Susan that it feels like he's taking up a disproportionate amount of spotlight without inherently offering a more unique spin on such a relationship, and we see Michelle and Olivia interacting with Emma and Norman a bit too, which is also precious.
Tumblr media
(TPN Light Novel 1: A Letter from Norman - “The Ghost Incidents at Grace Field House;” the younger siblings listen to Olivia recount her sighting of a ghost with rapt attention.)
Tumblr media
(S1 Ending 1 & Ending 2; some younger children sitting around Olivia as she reads them a story.)
Tumblr media
(Chapter 12 Bonus Comic; Michelle and Olivia being won over by Emma and Ray to push for being able to see a sick Norman.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Minerva Confidential Report Key Animations for S1 Ending 1 & Ending 2; Michelle having a lively conversation with Emma and Norman as they walk through the first floor hallway of Grace Field. There's an argument that this isn't Norman because we can't see a hint of his shark fin cowlick, but unless this is when they're all walking to to push to see a sick Norman, I default to it being Norman since Ray is in the full shot so there's a complete trio babies snapshot.)
Tumblr media
(Chapter 181.1; Michelle and Olivia trying to help ease the distress Emma and Norman are going through at seeing Ray cry.)
Tumblr media
(Chapter 181.1; Michelle and Olivia with Norman wishing one of their young brothers well on his shipment day.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Chapter 17 | Chapter 32; Don and Ray fondly remembering Michelle and Olivia among their siblings who were shipped out, respectively, and interestingly both deeply internalizing how close the two were with each other by each remembering them in a side hug, though this might have just been for Demizu's drawing convenience.)
