For no Earthly reason, it’s taken me this blasted long to finally translate the ONE/Murata joint interview from the 2015 guidebook OPM: Hero Encyclopedia. The notes throughout are the same ones as in the actual book, although towards the end I got lazy and didn’t write out the full details on such topics as the plot of Eyeshield 21 or the explanation for what fencing is. The curious may look that stuff up on Wikipedia. --Today I’d like to ask you two to provide the “definitive edition” of the story of One-Punch Man’s birth ONE: I’m much obliged. Yusuke Murata: Yes, thank you very much. --ONE-sensei, tell us how you began drawing One-Punch Man. ONE: Well, I wanted to try drawing manga digitally; that’s how it all started. There was this place (*1) online for posting up manga, and lots of people submitted their stuff there, so I wanted to submit something too. I bought a PC and some tools for drawing pictures digitally (*2). I tried out drawing 15 pages, and uploaded it with my PC for the first time…that was One-Punch Man Chapter 1. I didn’t have any real plans for continuing the story, and just posted it up without thinking of what to do next. But perhaps because I submitted it as “Chapter 1” it got a great response…OK, maybe not “great”, but a decent response. So I figured I might as well try drawing a continuation of the story. That’s when I really sat down and worked out how the story would continue, which made me realize this could turn into quite an interesting manga. And that pretty much brings us from Chapter 2 right up to the present. --Where did you get your ideas? ONE: To start with I simply tried to draw the sort of manga I’d want to read myself. I’ve read loads of Shonen manga throughout my life, and am particularly fond of battle manga. Generally speaking those types of stories are all about growth, meaning that by the last chapter the main character has grown stronger than anyone else and lives happily ever after. So I wondered what would happen if I started the story off with the main character already in peak condition. That became my jumping-off point. --So it’s a complete 180 from existing Shonen action manga? ONE: Which makes it fun for people who have already read lots of those typical Shonen manga. It’s like they’ve run the first lap, and this is their second time around. Murata: Yeah, it’s really exciting for Shonen manga aficionados. ONE: I also love it when a series creates friction between drama and humor. With One-Punch Man I wanted to try doing that through the worldview itself, rather than through specific plot points. The series is set in a dangerous, monster-infested world, but since Saitama’s there you don’t really notice just how bleak the world is. I think it’s that friction between Saitama and the rest of the world that makes things interesting. --Murata-sensei, what do you think makes One-Punch Man so appealing? Murata: It all boils down to Saitama’s appeal. In some ways, Saitama is incredibly similar to Son Goku from Dragon Ball (*3). It was Dragon Ball that first got me started reading Weekly Shonen Jump, so I find those similarities particularly appealing. Dragon Ball’s Goku (*4) is a very memorable protagonist: he does whatever he wants, fights strong guys…he’s only after excitement! He goes through life full of spirit. Even when the world’s in peril and he’s surrounded by chaos, it doesn’t bother him one bit. Like when Piccolo’s reincarnation entered the Tenkaichi Budokai (*5) and if Goku lost the world was doomed, even then Goku himself simply fought to win the tournament. After he beat Piccolo, he didn’t care that he had just saved the world, he was just happy to finally be crowned tournament champion. It’s that sort of detached easy-goingness, the sense of operating under a completely different logic than those around him. This type of aloofness, of doing things at one’s own pace, really screams “hero” to me. That’s what Goku and Saitama have in common. Another similarity is that they’re simply the strongest guys around. When things are looking hopeless, the moment

they show up you know things are going to be OK (laughs). --How did you find out about One-Punch Man, Murata-sensei? Murata: I follow this illustrator called “Akiman” (*6) on Twitter, and when I heard about One-Punch Man on his blog, I read the entire series overnight. I got a bit frustrated, because I realized I had become a manga artist precisely to draw something like this (laughs). At the time I was in sort of a dead-end career-wise, and (my apologies to Ootagaki-sensei[*7]) thanks to my incompetence things weren’t going very well with Donten Prism Solar Car (*8)…It’s safe to say I ended up causing Ootagaki-senseiand the readers a lot of trouble. Back then, I viewed my job simply as illustrating the stories given to me. But really, isn’t an illustrator’s job to visually convey the charm of the characters? You’ve got to understand what makes the characters appealing, or otherwise you’ll have nothing to show the readers. Once I read One-Punch Man, I knew it was exactly what I was looking for. I sent ONE-sensei a message right away, asking if we could meet. I told him point-blank I wanted to work with him… ONE: I was surprised to get a message from Murata-sensei. Frankly, at first I thought it might be a prank… Murata: Sorry… ONE: It was a real shock! (laughs) --Did you two hit it off? Murata: Yeah. I was so nervous about meeting him that I ended up being 30 minutes late (laughs). By that time I was already starving, so first I suggested we go get some yakiniku. (laughs) --What did you talk about at the yakiniku restaurant? Murata: I asked “hey, why don’t we do a one-shot together first?” --Your first collaboration was Earth Monster. ONE: With Earth Monster, I made storyboards so that Murata-sensei would have something to work off of, and to give us something to show the editorial office. I took it as an opportunity to make something really flashy, the sort of thing I could never draw on my own. I stayed within manga contest regulations (*9), so it was probably around 31 to 45 pages. Murata: But I wanted to use bigger panels, and expanded it to roughly 60 pages. --So you submitted Earth Monster (*10) to the editorial office as a one-shot? Murata: Actually, wasn’t Cockroach Busters (*11) the one we ended up showing to Young Jump first? ONE: That’s right. Before that we showed it to your then-current editor at Weekly Shonen Jump; I think we made about four copies. Murata: At the time I had an exclusive contract, so I felt obligated to draw it for Jump, but it wasn’t really panning out…And while I was wrapped up with that, I came down with gastroenteritis. ONE: Your wife found you and called an ambulance. Murata: I couldn’t move at all…That’s when I started thinking that if this exclusive contract was going to keep me from doing the work I wanted, then I had better do something about it. I called ONE-sensei from the hospital and told him “I’m terminating my contract, so how about we get a bunch of different one-shot manuscripts together and shop them around at different companies?” And that’s how things went. --How did you end up at Neighborhood Young Jump? ONE: Several different people had approached me with proposals for commercializing One-Punch Man. The question was, would I handle the illustrations myself, or get someone else to do them? Although personally I thought Murata-sensei was the best man for the job…Later there was discussion about me trying to draw a revised version, but after drawing about two chapters worth it became painfully obvious it would never sell. At that point Murata-sensei asked if he could take a stab at it. He redrew the first chapter with a felt-tip pen, and it blew me away. From there we started thinking about the best place to distribute this out to the world. With Murata-sensei’s connections we hooked up with an editor at Young Jump, and this led to the plan to run it in Neighborhood Young Jump, on condition that it be drawn by Murata-sensei. I thought it was incredible of Murata-sensei to publish this manga on the web rather than in print form, and I was sure

everyone else would be impressed with it too. So with that, we made our proposal to Young Jump, and it began. --Murata-sensei, were you in any way reluctant to publish the series online? Murata: Back when I was doing Eyeshield 21 (*12), I had never read any webcomics, and my thoughts towards them didn’t extend much beyond “eh, doing one might be interesting”. But when this proposal came up, I had by then read ONE-sensei's One-Punch Man, so I felt like publishing on the web had real merit. For instance, with a weekly magazine each issue disappears from stores when the next one comes out a week later, but on the web people can read the previous chapters too. And since it’s available to the entire world, it seemed like a good way to gain a larger audience. Viewing something published online on my monitor, I was amazed at how pretty the lines were (laughs) (*13). But since up until that point I had only ever worked with lines on paper, I had absolutely no skills at making them look pretty on monitors...So me and my staff went through a lot of trial and error. That's what made it so interesting! Mastering a new field was a lot of fun. Another advantage of drawing on the web is that you can make corrections. With Eyeshield 21, I was always pressed for time, which didn’t leave room for much trial and error…I’d question if what I was drawing was really up to snuff…then realize it wasn’t. But even after a chapter ran in Jump, there still wouldn’t be any time to fix it, so it would just remain as-is forever. This happened all the time, and really stressed me out. Online though, I can fine-tune things until I’m satisfied. Particularly the characters’ faces. I mean, when anyone other than ONE-sensei draws Saitama, he ends up a different character. Though at first I was real keen on putting a Shonen manga spin on him. --I hear there were a lot of rejected Saitama faces. Murata: That’s right. It wasn’t until I had drawn a good number of pages that I finally got the hang of his expressions. It was when he and Genos are listening to Sneck’s lecture at the Hero Association, and he’s noisily chewing gum. The moment I saw this bored-looking Saitama, a lightbulb went off in my head (laughs). I realized that because Saitama is so strong, for him everything is always boring. This made me want to redraw the whole thing from square one. Me and the staff had by then learned the ropes of drawing online and were really into it. I told them that this was the first step in what would be a historic manga; I was drawing in a daze of ecstasy. --How do you two work together during the writing process? Does ONE-sensei create new storyboards? Murata: With the main storyline or anything else where I’m going off of ONE-sensei’s original, I’m generally given free reign with page distribution and whatnot. But I’ll ask ONE-sensei if I have any questions. ONE: That’s right. Murata: For the main storyline, the dialogue stays pretty much the same. But with side-stories, sometimes I’ll try adding in scenes to ONE-sensei’s storyboards, or change the dialogue up a bit. In such cases, I’ll always ask ONE-sensei’s opinion. We’ll go back and forth fine-tuning it…and sometimes it’ll just end up reverting back to how it was in the beginning (laughs). ONE: Murata-senseialways shows me whenever he thinks up new scenes or dialogue to add. For instance, with the A-Class hero Spring Mustachio, my storyboards just had his name and general appearance. He talked a bit and got beat up by the monster, nothing more. I didn’t plan to highlight what weapons he used or anything like that; that part was really cut short. But the storyboards Murata-sensei came up with featured him using his weapon against the monster, showing off his fighting chops so that the monster looked even more impressive by comparison. It was fantastic! Murata: When I heard his weapon was a fencing (*14) rapier (*15), it reminded me of that cool swordsman from Wheels on Meals (*16). Sometimes it’s fun to add in more action like that. --On the flipside, has ONE-sensei ever given you pointers on how

to draw something? Murata: On occasion. For instance, during the big showdown with Boros. Since I felt this was the heavyweight championship of the universe, I tried to make it as flashy as possible. However, midway through when Boros starts losing ground to Saitama, there were places where he appeared clownish…ONE-sensei pointed out to me that the reason Boros is popular is because he always retains his dignity, even against Saitama. That made it all click for me, and I redrew things from square one. When it comes to the storyline, characters, and dialogue, all of that flows from ONE-sensei’s head, so I constantly check in with him. --Thank you very much. Finally, what do each of you consider a “true hero”? Murata: "Even if you’re the strongest around, not letting it go to your head”, I guess. Abiding by your own rules. A true hero never waivers. ONE: I agree; someone who never waivers. A true hero is someone who follows their dreams to the very end. ==[Notes]== *1: ONE-senseibegan serializing One-Punch Man in Weekly Shonen VIP on the community site Toshanai in 2009. *2: A graphics tablet and related software. *3: One of Weekly Shonen Jump’s most well-known series, a battle/adventure series by Akira Toriyama that ran in Jump from 1984 to 1995. *4: The protagonist of Dragon Ball. A member of the Saiyans (a warrior race) who grew up on Earth. Though pure-hearted, he is also a super-warrior who loves fighting against strong opponents. *5: The 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai (“Strongest Under the Heavens” Tournament). The reincarnation of the supposedly defeated Demon King Piccolo entered the tournament and battled Goku. *6: A Japanese illustrator who has worked on numerous games and anime, including Street Fighter II. *7: Yasuo Ootagaki-sensei. Wrote the story for the series Donten Prism Solar Car, which ran in Jump Square from 2010 to 2011. *8: The aforementioned series which ran in Jump Square from 2010 to 2011, depicting the struggles and friendships of young people involved in the development of solar cars. *9: There is a set number of pages for Rookie of the Year awards. For instance, the Tezuka Prize requires 31 pages. *10: Original story by ONE-sensei. A doujinshi by ONE-sensei, Yusuke Murata-sensei, and Kinu Nishimura-sensei. An action story depicting the struggles of a father who becomes a giant to fight monsters, and his frustrated son. *11: Comedy depicting the adventures of soldiers who undergo special training to exterminate cockroaches. Ran as a guest one-shot in the July 2015 issue of Young Gan-Gan. *12: American Football manga series which ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 2002 to 2009. *13: The current Neighborhood Young Jump browser is improved constantly to allow everyone to read the latest One-Punch Man as soon as possible. *14: A European style of swordplay, and now an Olympic sport. *15: One-handed sword with a sharp point. *16: 1984 Jackie Chan movie.

I LOVE the Secret History by Donna Tartt - not light reading, but depends what you like. I recently read a very enjoyable, strange novella called Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata. Discworld is also fantastic for fantasy!

hello! I dont know if this question has been answered before, but have you ever made a toyhouse for Kouten and any of your other anime ocs? Or are u planning too? I was just curious because I love your artwork so much and the characters you make that really brighten my day! And I really do love your new oc Murata and admire the way you designed him. For some reason, toyhouses help me learn a little more about the charcaters artists make but its ok if you dont have em, I was just wondering. Either way, as i said before, I love your artwork, and I hope to see more Murata and Kouten in the future.

Ooo, fun facts or trivia! This one is super hard bc I feel like every mega OPM fan already knows the trivia and I’d just be preaching to the choir, but I’m gonna think on it!! Might have to result to personal opm facts u know?

1. I first found out about OPM when I saw a commercial for season one on adult swim and thought it looked really creative and funny

2. It’s my second manga ever! I tried reading Sailor moon but only got two volumes in bc I hated it :/ was too girly and convoluted to me

3. My pop got volume one for my 13th birthday! I remember unboxing it and being like :0 it was a Halloween b day party too 😏😏

4. A few months after I started opm I drew Saitama’s face in sharpie on a craft egg and he was my first OPM toy/figure(?). Still have him somewhere! I tried to draw Genos too but his face was too squished

5. I have a dvd of season one that’s just the normal edition and a bootleg af version with the OVAS that my uncle got from god knows where. The OVAS are only in Japanese tho :/

6. I have a miniature cottagecore house for my Sai and Genos nendos!! I’ve talked a little about it before but never posted pics for it bc tumblr kept messing it up. I’ll try to show it soon tho! It’s got an overhead light, oranges and orange leaf wallpaper, tiny pictures of fubuki, Garou, Mumen, etc, hanging pots, fake moss on the outside, windows, Keith haring art, tiny teacups, a picture of saitama punching Nick Wilde that I got off tumblr (I’ll try to link it if I can find it) and so much more. I just now thought of putting up some gay flags in there, like why haven’t I thought of that before?? I’ll prob put up and mlm flag for Genos and a demi flag for Sai bc that’s how I hc them. I’m very proud of the house and I’m always adding onto it :) OO and I like to pose my nendos every now and then, tho I’ve posed them so many times that I’m running out of ideas 😭

7. I have a really cute lanyard I got years ago at a comic con that I never wear bc when DO you wear a lanyard? Wore it recently tho bc I was bored. Its got Sai Genos Tatsu Mumen and fubuki on the strap in chibi, they’re so cute.

9. I started with the manga, watched s1 of the anime then s2 when it came out years later and finally decided to check the wc after. If you had to make me choose, I’d choose the manga. I love the webcomic but the manga is more solid (not completely of course) and just more fun to read. Tho the webcomic IS fantastic don’t get me wrong, ONE is a great artist. The anime is pretty good, I’m still sad they had to cut s2’s budget but I love it anyway. THO I HATE HOW THEY TRANSLATED THE SAITAMA SAVING EVERYONE FROM CENTICHORO SCENE BC THEY TOTALLY DIDNT GET THE DRAMATIC LOVESICK LOOK ON GENOS FACE AND THE SURPRISED LOOK ON SAITAMA LIKE THAT SCENE WAS SO ICONIC AND THEY FUCKED IT I—sorry. Still upset.

10. I used to hate Tatsumaki Amai and Suiryu! Suiryu is still on thin ice bc he gives me such arrogant fuck boy vibes. Tatsumaki has grown so much in the current arc and even the arc before it and I just love her so much, even if she’s mean. Amai is a sick but he’s loveable and an interesting one you know? Especially bc of the webcomic. Used to get annoyed by Fubuki but now I’m in love with her LOL

Wow I’m so sorry it took me awhile to get back to you anon! This was a hard one. I haven’t thought of my inspirations lately since they have changed a bit. I tried to keep these relevant more to my anime art since that’s what I’m more known for, but some are influences on more of my original art that I hope someday I’ll feel brave enough to share with you all.

CLAMP (Magic Knight Rayearth) - they were the reason I started drawing manga/anime artwork at all back in early 2000′s for me. The only “shoujo” artists on this list, I was really taken by the eyes they drew at the time and it still can be seen a little bit today, though I’ve really tried to steer myself away from the large pointed eyes with thick lashes and elongated bodies that plagued my art for a long time. I’ll always love their compositions, use of color and just how they use marker.

Yusuke Murata (Street Fighter fan art) - known for Eyeshield21 and One Punch-Man. This man can draw anything. His sense of anatomy, foreshortening and movement is breathtaking. I love the lighting and rendering as well. He also has a knack for creating really original faces and he doesn’t have the “same-face” syndrome problem. Just top-notch. I don’t aim to be as shonen in style as him, but I hope to start being able to add more dynamic poses into my work.

Kyohiko Azuma (Yotsubato!) - known for Azumanga Daioh and Yotsubato! I really love the comedy and slice of life genres lately. I love softer styles and I really adore the more simplistic approach he has to his character design that really allows the slice of life genre to shine through his art. Despite the simplicity, it still is very anatomically technical. It’s simple, but warm and effective and very soft. His skill in backgrounds as well is phenomenal. I think it’s a whole atmosphere he creates and the story he tells in his illustrations that I would love to apply to my own work if I can. I also related a lot to an interview where he stated he struggles blending little Yotsuba into the world he created because she’s so different stylistically from all the characters, so it’s a lot of fun and helpful to see how he accomplishes this throughout the manga and the panels.

Masashi Kishimoto (Naruto) - of course one of my biggest influences due to all the SasuSaku I draw. I think his style is very effective. It’s also I think more on the simpler side actually (if you compare it to CLAMP and Murata’s). But it’s so dynamic and full of strong composition and memorable character designs. I really appreciate how by his influence, I never really stopped drawing thanks to the characters, Sasuke and Sakura, that he created that had such an impact on me.

Xia Da (Song of the Long March AKA Choukakou) - This one is a manhua artist. Her inking and watercolor artwork is absolutely phenomenal. Definitely someone I look up to when I’m inking my own pieces, I would love to be at her level of skill someday. Primarily an inspo for inking.

Kamome Shirahama (Atelier of Witch Hat) - another artist with phenomenal inking skills that I really admire. She’s also really good at drawing children! But I definitely believe she can draw anything, the fact that she has crossed the barrier to illustrate comic covers for both DC and Marvel is just incredible to me and a testament to how much skill she possesses. Primarily an inspo for inking.

Kozue Amano (Aria) - Known for Aqua, Aria, and Amanchu (lots of A’s!). Her ability to design precious soft characters, gorgeous scenery, and write a beautiful and gentle slice of life fantasy tale has always made her one of my absolute favorites. I absolutely love how she colors her works.

Adachitoka (Noragami) - this is a team who does characters and background art. It’s not a secret that I love watercolor. I also love the movement and action and fighting scenes from this manga. The fact that this team is female and broke through with a popular shonen series is simply amazing. I hope to be as good as they are in drawing figures and in watercolor someday.

James Gurney (Dinotopia) - the master of creating fantasy worlds and making it look like it EXISTS with his painting skills. His “Color and Light” book is an absolute staple (I have it always ready as reference) and it’s a must if you want to give your lighting that more realistic feel. I think my love of lighting really came from growing up with the Dinotopia series. He is always constantly sharing his wisdom as well on his website and twitter and just an amazing and inspiring person for generations of artists.

Makoto Shinkai (Kimi no Na Wa) - This movie’s aesthetics (especially the lush backgrounds), surrealism, and existentialism really spoke to me. I adore the starry skies and heavens and clouds. Screencaps of his movies fill my phone as a quick reference whenever I’m rendering some complex lighting or trying to create some sort of composition with the sky.

Studio Ghibli/Hayao Miyazaki (Kiki’s Delivery Service) - nothing really needs to be said especially given my love for the details in all the movies, the fantastic scenes involving flying in the sky, the gorgeous backgrounds, and the delicious food. Always a good choice to use as a reference for anything with nature or even cluttered cozy houses and rooms and greenhouses. It’s still a desire to delve more into world building for me and I’ll be using these movies for reference. I also keep tons of their artwork in my phone as reference.

Satoru Takizawa (Legend of Zelda, Breath of the Wild) - Known for his work with Twilight Princess and Breath of the wild. You know where I’m going with this - he is the MASTER of ambient lighting. I love his rough and loose painting style that I wish I could achieve someday, but I still have a tendency to over-render. A great resource for learning how to world-build and for concept art.

Andrew Loomis - anatomy and figure drawing master. At the end of this list, but not the least important by a long shot. His book I think is not the most beginner friendly in terms of seeing basic shapes and breaking down the form (I think his construction is still more on the complex side), but it’s a good place to start and keep grinding until it “makes sense.” It took me years, but once it started clicking, I have him to thank for it because my anatomy was an absolute mess because of my background of starting from CLAMP’s art style. Buy his book and make it your bible. Attend figure drawing classes. If you want to illustrate people no matter how simple, you must make studying anatomy a part of your process.

So this was by far my favorite episode of the season to date. I know a lot of people were worried about the animation quality and just overall quality JC staff has been putting out thus far, but I think it’s clear why the rest of the season has been average majority of the time. They spent. All the time. And budget. on. This. Episode. Every Character looked beautiful. The animation was fluid, not too blurry, not too flashy, well paced, and with high quality art. I just. Oh my god. I’m in denial right now that the season only has One episode left. Just 24 minutes more. Until WHO KNOWS when. Whos gonna cry with me next week? pls im gonna need like 100 shoulders my weak heart. ahh shitttttt

Oh boy, this is gonna be a LONG answer…

So it’s called ASH, and I’ve been writing it since I was twelve. It’s changed a lot, but in essence, it’s always been about this girl named Astrid Hart, who’s lived in a lab her whole life, and her meeting this kid named Oliver, who becomes her first and only friend and helps her escape. But it’s gotten a lot more complicated than that in the past uhhhh five years! (The first draft currently stands at 110,000 words.)

It’s soft scifi. About eighteen years before the events of the story, peoples’ kids started manifesting superpowers, and no one really knew why. The first reported case was this kid named Michael Strange, so it got called Strange Syndrome. And, because people love uncreative slang, the kids are usually referred to as “strangers,” or just “strange.” So you can’t casually use the word strange anymore, in this universe.

Obviously Astrid is strange, and so is her twin brother, Axel (and I would die for both of them). They both have accelerated healing powers, and that makes them basically invincible. Like, if they get stabbed, that’s a minor inconvenience, it heals in a minute or two.

Their dad is this complete asshole dude named Magnus. He’s a politician; that pretty much says it all. When the twins were six/seven-ish, Magnus traded them to the government in exchange for more political power. So that’s how they ended up in a lab in the middle of heckening nowhere. (And their mom, who’s actually a good person, wasn’t very happy about it.)

For most of the ten-ish years they were there, Astrid and Axel were both experimented on. Then, after one too many failed escape attempts, Magnus decided they should be separated. So Axel stayed in the lab while Astrid was taken out of it, into the surrounding area, to be trained as a soldier. The theory was that she wouldn’t try to escape without her brother… and that’s completely correct, and she’s very miserable about it.

So, actually, that’s all backstory; the actual story starts where, after around a year of this, Oliver Williams arrives. He’s supposed to be an intern; he’s honestly way too young for it (literally eighteen years old), but he’s a child prodigy, and his dad already works at the lab, so he’s not getting out of it… even though he’s the only one in the lab who has a problem with the whole human experimentation thing. (Yikes.)

He’s not supposed to talk to Astrid (and neither is anyone else, for that matter, because she’s really aggressive) but he decides to anyway, and the two of them become best bros. He wants to help her and Axel escape, and none of them quite know how to do that, but they’re going to figure it out.

…I don’t think it’s a spoiler to say that they eventually escape, so then the second half of the book is them befriending other strange kids, and trying to do something about the political climate surrounding said strange kids, because people are jerks. And also finding out that Magnus is more terrible than they previously thought.

And also they meet this girl named Ivy Murata, who’s amazing and a badass and turns every girl around her gay. But I won’t get into that, because I’ve already talked a lot about this.

TL;DR: superpowers! Lab tropes! Gays (and other queers, I kind of forgot to mention that didn’t I)! And that’s what all my writing is all about, but especially this WIP right here.

what’s a song that means a lot to you?

not really a song, but there’s a sound heard from the ships as they set sail... not ALL ships make the same sound, and there’s this specific sound few ships make that makes me feel really nostalgic. i can’t really describe it but it’s a sound different from the common howl, it’s kind of like a melody and i’ve heard it a handful of times in my hometown. that’s the only place where i’ve heard it and i’m not even sure if it’s the same ship or two or three. but yeah, there’s that.

what’s a trend you don’t understand?

show off selfies. though i wouldn’t say i don’t “understand” it since it pretty much is driven by the necessity of validation on various social media, it’s a sentiment more akin to distaste, i guess? i don’t really like the whole thing about taking selfies in dangerous places for the sake of appealing to people you don’t even know or just to one up against another person.

if you could punch an anime character, who would you punch and why?

which ability would you rather have: the ability to dance well, the ability to sing well or the ability to draw well?

the ability to draw well. im not especially interested in singing or dancing so...

what’s your favourite au? be it in fan art or fan ficition

now that i think about it, there isn’t any au i prefer.... i’d say i lean more towards specific tropes than an au in particular. as for the tropes i enjoy reading, there’s mutual pining where one half of the pairing is completely oblivious that their feelings are returned lmao. i also like comedy as an atmosphere to the story, im not that fond of tragedy in fanfiction.

what inspires you?

usually, being alone. no matter where, just being on my own without interacting with anyone or being put into a situation where i have to socialize, because that way my attention is completely focused on my own thoughts and i can play around with ideas and pull the strings for a new story. if it’s writing inspiration, that is. i don’t really require inspiration for anything else besides creative writing, i suppose?

god, i am really clumsy and useless when im not at work and i have really bad luck. a lot of shit always happens to me but recently the sole of my shoes wore out while i was on an uber ride to meet with friends and all the while i was crying inside and when i got off the car i tripped then i hid behind a car in the parking lot so no one saw me change shoes and then i went to the restaurant i was supposed to meet with my pals but it was the wrong place and the dude was like “miss... we’re literally under construction, dont u see the men working” and i just XDDD. man, it was so embarrassing im still not over it.

what was your favourite game as a child? be it video games, computer games or games you played at the playground etc

as a child, i really enjoyed playing on the beach with my sister. we would run from one side to the other and jump and do backflips without fear because the sand was a soft landing. we didn’t hold back in any way. it was sort of liberating, in a way. for a child, any kind of place where you don’t have to worry about getting hurt or having your mom telling you to not be too hasty is a treasure on its own, so when looking back, these are the moments and games i enjoyed the most.

if you could see anyone live in concert, who would it be?

i don’t like concerts, really. crowds make me really sick and i can’t handle it so there’s really no one i’d like to see in a concert. i do enjoy watching the concerts on the screen though, so i’d say the performances i like the most are all from My Chemical Romance lol

do you believe that everything happens for a reason?

yeah. it’s all related to the fact that i do believe in fate and it was part of my teachings as a kid from my mother and grandmother. it’s hard not to believe when it’s so engraved into your character tbh

And here it is, the entirely-unwanted followup to my last OPM manga review, this time with Volume 11! - AH YES THE AMAZING POOL PARTY PIC CHARACTERS PAGE - I could write an entire novel on that alone so I’ll just leave it at that. - For the low, low price of free, you can also see my reaction to the only part of it that matters here. - Also Charanko is cute and also Garou has obviously never seen a popsicle before in his life. - Metal Bat, calmly standing in front of the Big Fucking Monster(TM), wondering what to do about it. - This boy has guts and also issues. - Holy shit he’s so goddamn strong?? - Giant Fucking Centipede casually tosses him into a building. He casually gets up and ponders what to do next. - The panel of him jumping out of the building is precious beyond words. - Killer Move: Pumped-Up Dragon Pummelin’. I don’t know what else I expected. - The monster’s response is to wreck the whole city. This is why we don’t let you guys play with us. - Garou: expert opportunist. - “So how did you two lovebirds meet?” “Oh, I was fightin’ this giant monster, see, and--” “And he fell out of the sky like some kind of fucked-up angel!” - “Why did you fall from the sky?” Garou, I love you, but you’re a little slow on the uptake sometimes. - That stupid fucking grin on his stupid fucking face when he realizes Bat’s still alive, good God. - Bat’s mild indignation that some random fucko tried to attack him out of nowhere. - Metal Knight to the rescue? Most of the time. - After all of that and Bat’s still determined to fight the monster, good God can you talk about a one-track mind? - “I know that monster’s killing people and destroying things, but I want to go shopping!” Someone needs to teach this kid what priorities are. I love her, but damn. - Aaaand Bat’s down. Good job, kiddo. - That bird monster’s really cool, I’ll admit. Such a nice design. - oh wait i change my mind it has human hands i fucked up abort abort abort - GENJI - Why do the male monsters have so much diversity but all the female monsters are just unsettling sexy women? - Wait I know why. - We need, like, a week where we all design diverse female monster OCs for the Punchverse or something. I’ve actually got a few lying around... - MAAAAAAAX - Max looks so good in his tournament outfit. Such a good and handsome man. - Lin-Lin’s such a cutie. - Snek also looks really good in his tournament outfit. - “Was ‘bottom-ranking’ necessary?” I cry. - “Volten” is translated into “Boltane” here, and to be honest I really like the look of it. And saying it. Boltane. Nice. - “Rosie”, however, is translated into “Rogy”. Uh, no. No thanks. Put that back, I don’t want it. - Ah yes, the Nazi. Disgusting. - Update: I Still Hate Sour Face. - Suiryu looks like he’s literally twelve in his first appearance. How did he age like ten years during the course of the tournament. I mean. I feel like I aged ten years over the course of the tournament, but... - The translation for his martial art is different every time. - How is Sour Face twenty. Charanko being twenty I can buy, but not him. Did being a complete and utter dick make him age prematurely? I’ll accept that as my headcanon. - “You never could tie this right.” Charanko asks Bang for help with his belt confirmed. - Bang and Bomb: Brothers on Stakeout - The panel of Bang irritably munching on a snack while ignoring his brother is gold, I love it. - Christ, sometimes I forget just how terrifying Bang is. - I’m probably in the minority here, but Do-S interests me approximately 0%. Maybe I’m just too ace. - Leave Darkness Blade alone! Gosh. - Eyelashes just fuckin’ kicks him in the face with his immaculate dress shoe, amazing. - Aww, Genji... - DEATH GATLING MY GUN-ARMED SON - I prefer his new outfit, honestly. The old look is nice, but it’s too clean, even though it makes him look like Darkness Blade’s badass big brother (gonna hang onto that headcanon, tho). He looks much more intimidating now. Still a great character, however he looks. I love. - Ah yes, the Zoo Men bonus. Always fun. - King and his love for kid’s shows is so #relatable. - He’s such an idealist, I love him. Also, I wish he would smile more. He’s so cute when he does. - “You have to watch it.” Me with my family and chanbara, honestly. - Are you even trying to get along with these people and be helpful, Saitama? - The Hero Association bigwigs are all so repulsive, ugh. - Vore. - Metal Knight is useful for once. - Yasss King please teach Saitama how teamwork REALLY works. - Hero Association: “We’ll give you literally anything.” “Mmkay I want a better bat.” No one can say this kid isn’t a simple man with simple needs. - Don’t yell at him, Zenko. - I love the piano recital bonus. Bat just cares so much for his baby sister, and so openly. More male characters could stand to be like him. In short--or long. really, really long--another great volume! Lots of appearances by some of my favorite characters. I can’t wait to get my hands on Volume 12! In. September. For whatever reason it’s taking so long to release. -sigh-

before getting to the episode I can finally cite so many voices

Shou is voiced by Casey Mongillo and she is a co founder of the website GTAGaming and has been in games like “Star Trek Online″ and “Red Dead Redemption”

she is also transgendered and has posted some youtube videos about her experience

Koyama’s voice actor is Kieth Silverstein who voices Hisoka in the HXH dub, Speedwagon from Jojo, and Vector from the Sonic franchise

Ishiguro with the mask on is played by Cristina Vee who is the current voice for Sailor Mars and plays Killua in HXH

Sakurai is played by Xander Mobus who was the narrator and voice for Master Hand in Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U and 3DS

I have no fucking idea why it took so long for this info to be on MP100 wiki, but I’m glad I can finally give them credit

also I thought I had mentioned this before, but Reigen’s voice actor Chris Niosi has a tumblr account @kirbopher if you’re interested

anyway its time for the final episode (at least until we get a season two)

at some point we’ve all said it, but the foreshadowing in this intro is overwhelming

something I like about this episode is how much blue they chose for the palette

this is one of my favorite moments in the series, its so perfect

jokes aside I do think about how there’s probably more to Reigen’s past than we’re aware of, especially knowing his childhood ambition was “to be somebody”

 okay unmasked Ishiguro sounds familiar and the only voices that are listed for him in both languages are his voice with the mask on, of coarse

Shou’s voice really has grown on me, I like how youthful it is, its a shame the bulk of his screen time is after the events of this arc 

generally speaking when it comes to the esper kids in this series both languages did a great job at making sure they still sound like kids and I appreciate that because I am really bored of adults trying and failing at playing teenagers

not just in anime, in general

I never understood what Shou was doing with his hand when he teleported away, it looks dirty

I like this “return to moderate normality” sequence, its soothing

I love Mob’s surprised reaction when he’s looking at Tsubomi, someone broke it down frame by frame and they put a lot into it

I still hate Shinji, but I guess he learned his lesson

why is Ritsu still hanging out with him though? and outside of school too

I still feel bad for Tenga, but at least he found a place in the Body Improvement Club

I like how Ritsu’s having his nice brother speech and then Mob legit passes out

again Teru REALLY looks like Naruto with this hair

I love the animation on Reigen rolling up the newspaper, its these small character animation moments that really give these characters personality

“did I do something he thought was lame?” yeah but he’ll get over it in a few arcs

I still don’t like the Kageyama parents, they really bother me

aaaaand there he is, the next great Asshole Anime Dad

he doesn’t sound like I imagined

then again I imagined him sounding perpetually unimpressed

this omake just makes me so happy, I’m really thankful that Bones didn’t see ONE’s art as inferior or not good enough

in fact this really drives home that ultimately the anime took his style and cleaned it up a little, softened the edges, they didn’t flat out change it like what happened with OPM (again not to knock Murata’s illustrations because when I read OPM I do read the version with his art)

overall I went into this dub not expecting much, but I love MP100 so much that I figured I’d try it out and I’m impressed. I like that Funimation didn’t fill the cast with their bigger name actors, not to knock them but its nice that they gave these opportunities to voice actors who aren’t as established and I really do hope we get season two. when we do I definitely will watch the Japanese and English versions. everybody did good and I’m even willing to say that its on par with the Japanese. I’m impressed that they pulled through and I’m definitely going to keep my eyes peeled for when they release the Blu-Ray set in America. I really want to be able to watch it on my TV in glorious HD at my own convenience. 

I had fun doing posts like this and I kind of want to do this for other dubs of anime I love, I’m thinking I should give the OPM and BNHA dubs a try. as far as which one I’ll do first I’ll think about it but stay tuned for that
