It’s funny that I’ve spent years trying to listen to the music my friends listen to; I used to lie to myself that I liked it, and eventually I found a few nice songs to mention when people ask me what music I like. But still, on lonesome rainy afternoons and aching nights, I can’t help but wander back to my playlist of Lata Mangeshkar, Salma Agha, and P Susheela…

IN APRIL, A super PAC ostensibly committed to supporting “pro-science” candidates began dropping eye-popping sums of money on a Portland, Oregon, congressional race. 314 Action Fund, which is not known for spending big in congressional primaries, has spent $1.7 million in support of a single candidate in the 3rd Congressional District’s open Democratic primary, according to federal filings. That sum is equal to what the political action committee spent on independent expenditures supporting or opposing candidates during the entire 2022 election cycle.
314 Action Fund, which describes itself as helping to elect “Democrats with a background in science to public office,” is throwing its weight behind Maxine Dexter, a state representative and local doctor. The news outlet Jewish Insider floated Dexter as a potentially pro-Israel candidate before she entered the race.
By waiting until April to launch its spending blitz, 314 Action is able to delay disclosure of its donors until May 20. The election is scheduled for May 21, but ballots have already begun arriving to voters by mail. In other words, the identity of the donor or donors won’t be documented in campaign finance reports until it’s too late.
What is publicly known, however, is that former Multnomah County Commissioner Susheela Jayapal, the sister of Rep. Pramila Jayapal, was considered the candidate to beat before the sudden influx of money last month.
And what The Intercept can reveal is that Susheela Jayapal is being targeted by the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, or AIPAC, which is secretly funneling money into the race by washing it through 314 Action, according to two Democratic members of Congress familiar with the arrangement.
The pro-Israel community telegraphed its intent to target Jayapal early on, primarily for suspicion that her politics on Israel–Palestine may align with her younger sister’s, the chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus who called for a ceasefire early in the current war on Gaza.
On December 5, a story landed in Jewish Insider, which closely tracks congressional primaries, headlined “Jayapal sister’s congressional candidacy alarming Portland Jewish leaders.” The article noted that “local pro-Israel advocates … have yet to coalesce behind a viable candidate,” and it named Dexter as a possibility. Given the politics of Portland and the surrounding area, the pro-Israel community had little chance of nominating a candidate unapologetically and unconditionally supportive of Israel’s war effort, but Dexter had potential. Dexter launched her campaign later that same day.
The last-minute spending in the race is enormous: on track to climb north of $3 million in a short period of time in an inexpensive media market. On Friday, a brand-new super PAC got involved with nearly $1 million worth of negative ads against Jayapal.
Some of the money directed to 314 Action — close to a million dollars by early April — had come from a single Los Angeles-based AIPAC donor, according to the members of Congress, who asked for anonymity to preserve professional and political relationships. The plan was openly discussed at a recent AIPAC fundraiser in Los Angeles, as well as a fundraiser in the Pacific Northwest, said the members of Congress, who learned about it from colleagues in attendance or were themselves in attendance

Susheela Raman - Love Trap

Day #117: Today I Listened to ‘Ye Meera Divanapan Hai’ by Susheela Raman. Mm nice and chilled. It’s by no means a banger, more of a soft-jam… Dammit now I’m hungry!
I love the subtle post-rock electric guitar in the intro. It’s a shame it doesn’t stick around as some lush, high-frequency parts could have really elevated the beauty of the song. Raman’s singing is beautiful too. It’s soft and intimate without being overly breathy.
There’s a short instrumental break about one minute in where weirdly nothing comes in to fill the gap left by the vocals. It sounds like someone was meant to play a solo but forgot to. Who was it? Was it me? Oh crap, is that why the band’s all glaring at me?!

Lol Jayapal's sister just took a big fat L in sapphire-blue Portland tonight. The hard-left is so screwed if they can't win elections in states like Oregon. Jew-hatred doesn't win you votes. The Squad is going to get decimated in the primaries. Democratic voters are taking out the trash, they're not going to let the far-left do to them what Maga did to the GOP.
It looks like Maxine Dexter managed to rack up a lot of local/Oregon endorsements for the race for Oregon's 3rd congressional district, while Susheela Jayapal got a lot of national progressive endorsements (like AOC, Sanders, Barbara Lee) and I think this is one of the things that can hurt progressive candidates - in a lot of places, voters and organizations like and trust candidates that have more local support and can speak to specific local issues (while tying them to larger issues and causes, of course). Dexter's also, as a current state legislator, chair of the housing committee and been involved in supporting legislation and policies to increase affordable housing and addressing the opioid epidemic.
I do also think that Israel and the war in Gaza is obviously a factor as well, but both Jayapal and Dexter support a ceasefire, as well as immediate aid for Palestinians. I also know that Dexter has, like many others, supported the two-state solution.

Dislikes: people who value you solely for entertainment purposes and do not see you as human beings capable of deep feelings and thoughts
Music: Old Hindi & Tamil songs (Lata Mangeshkar, Susheela), Carnatic music, classic rock (Livin’ on a Prayer, Free Bird), classical western music(particularly the impressionist ones like Debussy’s Syrinx and Poulenc’s flute sonata)

Nationality: Born and raised in the US, somehow has a very thick Indian accent which makes nice people ask “were you born in India?” and annoying ones reply to me in an over-exaggerated version of how I speak 💀
Languages: Tamil and English, I’m learning French as a second language in school. I can read the Hindi script but can’t really speak or understand it :/
Religion: Hindu
Aspires to study economics and chemical engineering, and maybe go into private equity in the future?
This is going to be a studyblr and a place for all my weird feelings to coexist, so yeah, it’s gonna get at least a little weird (aka ✨quirky✨) in here.

Progressives lost two Democratic primary races in Oregon on Tuesday following heavy spending by outside groups, including at least one tied to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, which has spent heavily to oppose left-wing and pro-Palestinian candidates in races across the U.S. in recent months.
In Oregon's 3rd Congressional District, Maxine Dexter defeated Susheela Jayapal, taking 51.1% of the vote to just 28.6% for Jayapal as of Wednesday morning. Jayapal—the elder sister of Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), who chairs the Congressional Progressive Caucus and has been critical of Israel—was seen as the most progressive candidate in the race and a potential new member of her sister's caucus. The Portland-area seat is solidly blue and Dexter is expected to win easily in the general election.
Dexter, a member of the state House, received an enormous boost from outside groups, which spent roughly $7 million in supporting her and opposing Jayapal. Pro-Israeli donors funneled $2.2 million through 314 Action Fund, a political action committee (PAC) that served as a vehicle for AIPAC donors, according toThe Intercept. Another PAC attacking Jayapal called Voters for Responsive Government, newly formed for this race, has not yet had to release its donor list. Ultimately, Dexter's supporters outspent Jayapal's 30-to-1, HuffPost reported.
"This race showed so clearly why we need to have real campaign finance reform that allows for public financing," Susheela Jayapal wrote on social media Wednesday, criticizing the role of outside super PACs, which she said timed their contributions so they wouldn't have to reveal their donors until after the primary.
