As Things Stand, Look Up!
So much has happened in the last few days…Why do “they” want to push us toward war? Our government is shoving us all into the jaws of war. Is it so they can keep their power? Now that we have started making political arrests, “the powers that be” need to stay in power forever. They know that if they are unseated, they themselves may be indicted. The rules of the game are changing. It is…

For those who are unaware, October is breast cancer awareness month. I do not honestly imagine that many of you are unaware, as there are in fact substantial controversies around what has been termed "pinkwashing" i.e. companies using support of breast cancer charities to advertise their brand while meanwhile doing very little to support the cause and/or promote products which may actively contribute to increased risk of cancer. One of the most prominent charities, the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, has been followed by controversies related to their allocation of research funding, their decision to pull support from Planned Parenthood, the considerable CEO pay, and their litigiousness around other charities using the phrase "for the cure".
Tumblr media
Mattel have in fact collaborated with the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer foundation, with 2006's Pink Ribbon Barbie. Suitably, she was a Pink Label release, a collectors edition doll for ages 6+.
Barbie has a particular history that ties in with this subject matter; quite apart from the fact that the doll herself seems like a natural tie-in given her associations with the colour pink, feminity and, well, large breasts, the creator of Barbie, Ruth Handler, was herself diagnosed with breast cancer in 1970.
Tumblr media
As a part of her treatment, Handler had a mastectomy. At the time, there were very few options available to women who had undergone mastectomies and wished to look like their pre-surgery selves. As a result, Handler collaborated with a prosthetics designer to develop liquid silicone prosthetics that could be worn by women who had undergone mastectomies. These hit the market in 1976.
As a result, Handler's obituary quotes her as saying that she lived her life "from breast to breast".
Tumblr media
Just to cap this off, please do be aware of the risks and signs of breast cancer. Breast cancer can affect people regardless of their assigned sex at birth, potentially including those who have had top surgery depending on what kind of tissue remains post-surgery.

Breast Cancer Awareness by Way of Viral Memes?
By Kimberly Eugene, 07/03/2022 The Internet’s latest obsession with sharing humorous personalized images, also called memes, has resulted in the emergence of a whole new way to market in the digital marketplace. One example worth mentioning is The Susan G. Komen Foundation. The organization has become the world’s largest nonprofit source of funding for the fight against breast cancer, and it is…

Use Ecosia
Its self-given epithet isn't a lie-it's literally just a search engine that plants trees using the revenue generated by showing you ads that are only personalized if you for some reason actually want that. Here it is on extensions for Chrome, Firefox, and Brave. It's planted 194.2 million trees, to be precise. And they're currently charging towards 200 million. In fact, they've got a big ol' banner on top of the site that's always there just to count up until they get there. That banner annoys me, both because it's actually working to get me to search more and also because the 'tism despises the way it makes everything off-center from how it should be. So, to both help the environment and get that thing out of my sight, I'm now evangelizing it to everyone I know. If you're looking for very specific things you'll probably still want to stick with Google, but Ecosia now is noticeably more precise and overall better to use than it was when I first started using it back in 2019.
I will say that they will often use very cringey, social-justice style rhetoric, but unlike the vast majority of socjus organizations they're more than willing to walk the walk with consistency: they work with local communities in the countries they plant trees in so that they not only don't have to choose between economic prosperity and environmental stewardship, but are able to obtain the former from the latter. They also put way too much importance on those UN climate talks, but for a mid-size charity I think it does make a certain amount of sense to invest time and attention into those kinds of things; they get millions of eyes on them, and given Ecosia's model of operations they're far more in need of active growth than other comparable organizations. And honestly, I'd say that some cringey rhetoric regarding actual good being done far outweighs what you see from so many other charities, which talk themselves up only to actually do very little(Susan G. Komen, Wounded Warrior, etc).

Also for people who want to give money to charity — there’s some research you can do to find out how/what they allocate to administrative expenses.
The higher the administrative expense ratio (also sometimes called administrative fundraising rate), the more money in the nonprofit’s annual budget that goes to paying staff, office expenses, rent, utilities, overhead, fundraising, etc. What you want to look for are nonprofits whose ratios are less than 25% - these are the ones who are doing solid impactful work and your donation will stretch very far for these organizations. Nonprofits whose admin expense ratios exceed about 30% tend not use monetary donations as effectively or don’t really do what they say they do.
For example, the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation has an admin rate of 31%, meaning 31% of your donation is not going to cancer research - it’s going to golf supplies for their annual fundraiser, car magnets, paychecks, etc. Meanwhile Big Brothers Big Sisters tend to be around 15% (depending on your geographical area), so 15% of your donation is going to admin expenses.
You can find this stat from websites like Guidestar and Charity Navigator, but they sometimes bury it. The best way to determine this stat is by looking at the 990s, and the Candid tool is super effective for this (beta.candid.org).
But honestly like Empress has said, the best way to make sure that your dollar is stretching as far as it can go is to donate to local charities and nonprofits. It’s the national organizations that tend to have broader focus with higher admin costs. And please, let me give a plug to Angel Trees. You can find them at local churches, firehouses and hospitals (sometimes), and Walmarts. These are children and families in need this holiday season and fulfilling their wish lists is an easy way to contribute meaningfully to your local community.
Thank you so much for this, especially given the time of the year we are in.

February 4th is World Cancer day so I wanted to take a moment to briefly acknowledge this. As I have posted about before last October, Barbie has a history with the subject of cancer as her creator Ruth Handler was herself a survivor. As a result it is no surprise that Barbie has had tie-in dolls with the Susan G Komen foundation.
Tumblr media
Also worth noting is that Mattel has an ongoing collaboration with CureSearch, a childhood cancer charity. Mattel's contribution here is with Brave Barbie, a doll line now running for over 10 years.
To quote the Executive Director of Mattel Children's Foundation and Corporate Philanthropy, Nancy Molenda, as quoted in the linked article on the CureSearch website:
Brave Barbie is given to children that are going through difficult cancer treatments so that they can see themselves and feel comforted that they’re not going through this alone.
Tumblr media
Brave Barbies are donated to children fighting childhood cancer and depict either a light-skinned or a darker-skinned doll with no hair as well as a 'natural' coloured wig, a cute multi-coloured wig and a bandanna.
Mattel has also produced another doll in a similar range; friend of Barbie Ella, who was not for retail sale, but available only by donation to childrens hospitals, and depicted a friend of Barbie experiencing hair loss due to chemotherapy.
Tumblr media
Cancer is a tragedy that affects many people and I am not going to ask you to donate to any particular charity or to engage in any particular kind of activism but I do encourage you to seek out a charity that suits you and that you personally would like to see support behind, if you are in a position where charity work or donations are right for you at the moment.

Hitting puberty around the height of the Susan G. Komen ribbon craze was fun because everyone is telling you “check your breasts for strange lumps” but you don’t even know what a regular boob feels like
