Alright animation fans, this is the big test.
On Christmas Day Star Trek Prodigy season 1 will be released on Netflix. This is a new 3D animated young adult animated series that was removed from Paramount+ as a tax write off, and was only saved through an amazing grass roots campaign by fans to be picked up by Netflix so that it’s second season could be aired.
If you like serialized storytelling in kids shows, watch Star Trek Prodigy.
If you like Star Trek, watch Star Trek Prodigy.
If you know absolutely nothing about Star Trek, watch Star Trek Prodigy.
If you like The Owl House, Gravity Falls, Avatar the Last Airbender, or Legend of Korra, watch Star Trek Prodigy.
If you’re angry at studios cancelling animated shows prematurely or treating kids animation like trash, watch Star Trek Prodigy.
If you couldn’t afford a Paramount+ account but have a Netflix account, watch Star Trek Prodigy.
If you like episodic content with a serialized story, watch Star Trek Prodigy.
If you have kids and want them to get into Star Trek but don’t know where to start, watch Star Trek Prodigy.
If you like sci-fi, watch Star Trek Prodigy
If you like colorful characters, gorgeous animation, a serious storyline with lots of character growth and high stakes, watch Star Trek Prodigy.
This show has been neglected by Paramount+ and it’s gotten a rare second chance. The first month a show is released on Netflix is the most crucial time of all because the viewership will determine its fate going forward. A second season has already been finished (it was nearly completed when Paramount cancelled it), but if we want to see more beyond this season we need Netflix to see that we care about it and that their risk in picking up the show is warranted.
Please. Help us save this show. It’s SO GOOD, and it was treated like garbage by Paramount+. Help us stick it to Paramount and show everyone what a great show this actually is. Help us make Paramount regret their decision. Help kids animation continue to thrive and show it’s worth! Help bring in more people into the Star Trek fandom! Help us now! Please!

It's taken 3 months of trial and error (mostly error), but...
Tumblr media
... here's Rok Tahk!

I learned a lot designing and making her; she's definitely the most complicated piece I've crocheted to date. There are still a few things I want to fix - but given that she's only my second attempt at designing a crochet pattern, I think she's turned out pretty well! And Murf agrees.

Okay, well, I had some time, so I made some fan promo images for fun. They may not be great quality, but if they're okay, feel free to post 'em everywhere.

I just wish I had characters like Rok-Tahk on TV when I was a chubby kid as tall as kids two years older than me. She’s so cute and she’s so sweet and she’s so lovable and she’s so BIG. And it’s OKAY. It doesn’t change how gentle and endearing she is or how the others see her, or Gwyn’s protective instinct towards her as a younger girl.
And now the show is gone and I guess big girls today won’t see that either. 😑

I’m going to make one last plea! If you’re in ANY of these fandoms: The Owl House, Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Dragon Prince, Star Wars, Star Wars Rebels, Ninjago, Transformers, Gravity Falls, or any other similar series, please give Star Trek Prodigy a watch! Seriously, just answer the following questions:
Do you like episodic content with an overarching story that builds and builds over time like Avatar?
Do you like the found family trope?
Do you like mysteries and science fiction?
Do you wanna try Star Trek but are daunted by it’s enormous history and legacy?
Do you like characters that grow and change between episodes and become better characters?
Do you like dark plot lines, trauma, and existential dread hidden in a kids show?
Are you feeling like there isn’t anything new to watch now that The Owl House is over?
If you said yes to ANY of these questions then Star Trek Prodigy is the show for you! It’s a CGI Nickelodeon show that gradually introduces you to the Star Trek universe in a gentle way through colorful characters and crazy sci-fi exploits! When a bunch of alien kids enslaved on a mining asteroid stumble upon a Federation Starship, they band together and use the ship to escape their captors. With the help of a holographic mentor, the crew of alien kids learn to work together and become a family. Along the way there’s time traveling shenanigans, deadly alien planets, devious aliens, and an underlying mystery about the ship and how it got stuck on in the mining asteroid to begin with!
Please please PLEASE take a look! It’s such s good show with great writing and easily fills the void we’re in for new animated shows! I promise you, it’s worth the time to check it out!

I wish I had a way of reaching a huge amount of folks just to say that Prodigy IS NOT cancelled.
Netflix bought not just the distribution rights, but the licence to make more Prodigy, and if we all watch it we'll see plenty of it in the future.
PSA I guess

Star Trek: Prodigy
Tumblr media
I hurriedly binged this the night before last and last night to have a look at it before it vanished. (You know how it is... you put something off, and put it off, and then things suddenly get interesting.)
It's a serious shame that there will not be a second season of this airing at Paramount+. I seem to recall hearing that they're completing production on what they've got and will be "trying to find it another home."
I very much hope they do. I enjoyed what I saw, these last couple of nights. The animation style was handsome and the writing was sharp. There were some story and character choices I wouldn't have made, but (shrug) I wasn't in the room; so, whatever. It felt like good solid Star Trek to me; I'll miss not seeing more of it.
I was seeing reports on Twitter last night that it had already been pulled from P+, but here on the European side it lingered through today. If you're over here and subscribing, and want to catch a last glimpse, according to the article above tonight's your last chance.
Meanwhile: ave atque vale, Prodigy.

Note: This post includes no specific spoilers for Star Trek: Prodigy, though it does mention thematic aspects of two episodes in the first half of season 1.
Now that Star Trek: Prodigy is back streaming, I obviously had to rewatch my favorite episode - one of my favorite Star Trek episodes of all time, frankly - "Time Amok". And it's funny how even though I've watched it numerous times since it first aired, it still makes me cry and it still fills my heart entirely. But then I did something I've never actually done, and went on to watching the next episode ("A Moral Star, part 1"). Though I'd rewatched that episode separately, I'd not seen it immediately following "Time Amok" and I hadn't realized just how seamlessly the two fit together. "A Moral Star, part 1" is in my opinion another of the stronger episodes of season 1, with intrigue and cleverness abound, alongside heart and its persistent message and moral core.
Prodigy is a show about learning to become Starfleet, about growing into Star Trek. It's a children's show in as much as it's about children - notably, children from outside of the Federation's sphere of influence - becoming convinced of the virtues of this Federation, of Starfleet as an exploratory body and source of good in the galaxy. Not because anyone forced them to or even expected it of them, but because they want to do good and hold by those values. "Time Amok" is my favorite episode of season 1 because of its story, its exquisitely tragic happy ending, and the way it manages to do so much character work in so short a time. But "A Moral Star" (both parts) maybe best represents what both Prodigy and Star Trek as a whole should be. The fact is that the episode about characters coming into their own - as a team and as individuals - is necessary to lead into the one where they can work together to uphold Federation ideals.
Anyways, go watch Star Trek: Prodigy if you haven't already (and even if you've never watched any other Star Trek). It's great.
