"Common over much of the continent is the little Chipping Sparrow. Originally a bird of open pine woods and edges, it has adapted well to altered landscapes. It now nests in gardens and parks in many areas, its tame behavior making it well-known and popular. Evidently it was even more common in towns in the 19th century; but then the House Sparrow, introduced from Europe, took over its place as our number one city 'sparrow.'"

Chipping Sparrow - (Spizella passerina)
Chadron State Park - Fall 2023
Probably the most common sparrow in the park, Chipping Sparrow like to forage in grassy lawns, regardless of how recently they've been mowed. In their adult plumage, they are the most dapper of the small sparrows, sporting a reddish-chestnut cap and a solid black eyeline on their otherwise gray face. This bird is a juvenile, still wearing the streaky cap-feathers in a tawny-brown color.
Chippies tend to forage in large groups, especially in the fall and winter months, and will often pair up with other sparrows in an effort to keep safe within a flock. Their flight calls are incredibly simple, a tiny tsiis, tsiis. You can sort of mimic the sound by putting your tongue to the back of your front teeth to make the 'ts' sound, using just a little bit of air.
All banding, marking, and sampling is being conducted under a federally authorized Bird Banding Permit issued by the U.S. Geological Survey's BBL. Permission to share images was granted by Bird Conservancy of the Rockies (BCR).
