My brother, my dad, my dad's girlfriend and myself walk into a midwest baptist church as first time guests.
Me: Hi *holds out hand to greeter expecting to get a bulletin*
Older Lady: This isn't for you. It's for the ladies!
Me: *blinks*
Older Lady steps over to my dad's girlfriend with a flyer: We're having a ladies luncheon on Wednesday and would love if you would join us.
My father (who i am not out to) and brother standing behind me putting together what just happened as we walk away: wait-
Me: *Finally processes and starts trying not to laugh* I wasn't even trying! That hasn't happened in years!
My brother: I know.
Context: My gender is in the fluid/enby area. I'm not on hormones and never plan to fully transition. All I had was short hair, a grey polo, and a sports bra that happens to flatten by chest. As mentioned I was not consciously trying to pass as male, because I was walking into a baptist church of strangers. Tomboys are accepted well enough in this part of the midwest. So girl with short hair doesn't immediately mean butch lesbian out here either.
This older woman wasn't trying to slight me or imply I wasn't acting lady like enough to be invited to a luncheon. She legit thought I was a guy and turned to the only "woman" in the group to invite her instead. To her I wasn't trans I was just a guy and guys aren't invited to the ladies luncheon.
It's the weird limbo of acceptance that happens in the areas of the midwest that don't have a large number of openly loud members of the lgbt community. The idea of someone being trans doesn't cross their mind. If you dress like a guy and have the hair of a guy you must be a guy. And why would I correct them? They got to the right answer. It was just unexpected that they would.

i think to myself, i can’t wait to leave this place, but i don’t know if i have the strength to do that anymore. i can’t sit in church anymore and listen to them condemn my behavior anymore.
