The snake's-head fritillary is an unmistakeable plant: look for its chequered, purple, pink or even white, bell-like flowers, nodding on thin stems. It has narrow, grey-green leaves that appear at the base of the plant and occasionally up the stem. My drawing is available here… https://theweeowlart.etsy.com/listing/1679982652

𝐎𝐍 𝐌𝐀𝐑𝐈𝐀𝐍𝐎'𝐒 𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐓𝐎𝐎𝐒 :

**Note : Mariano started getting tattoos to cover up his battle scars and turn them into art / something beautiful. He got his first one at fifteen when he became Underboss — a phoenix to cover up the scar from the large kitchen knife Claudio (the boss) stabbed Mariano in the back with. Mariano was nine when this happened, and Claudio was thirteen. Mariano nearly died. The following is a list of tattoos (and reference pictures, not perfect but for reference) he's gotten since. This list is subject to change as I feel like it.
Tumblr media
All / Most Verses :
A large phoenix on his back / side (covering the wound from Claudio — in the spirit of rising like a phoenix and overcoming hardship, bigger than picture, located in different spot).
A rosary on his left wrist / thumb.
A phoenix and skull on his right hand.
Finger tattoos: right pointer is the symbol for scorpio ; right ring is a coiling snake that wraps around it.
A small lemon tattoo on his left side (near his chest) that he got with a friend.
Right hand: two sparrows, a flower and a sun to symbolize a return to home.
Right wrist is the Italian horn, said to protect from the evil eye.
Right bicep is Atlas holding up the weight of the world. Later, Italy and Icarus were added to this. Atlas is a story he's always seen himself in. Icarus reminds him to mind his distance to the sun.
Right forearm is an 'x' looking badge meant to signify him as authority
On his back is an 'x' to represent misconduct and failure.
On his left forearm is a broken sword.
Two-line tattoo around his right thumb symbolizing the duality of good and evil, and that it can exist simultaneously.
A finger gun on his chest to represent his dynamic with his boss. (The picture is a reference but it's a "masculine" hand on Mariano with the nails still painted black.)
A man with a tree growing out of his back on the back of his lower leg, to represent sacrifice and family.
Archangel Michael either on his chest or back.
For Nonny-verses specifically ( @batteredoptimist ) :
For verses with James : a snakeshead fritillary over a scar he got just doing normal dumb stuff (in the original verse it was tearing his arm open on a nail, unpictured. Couldn't find a tattoo for reference.) ; a vine wrapped around his left index finger.
For verses with both James and Rosie : the sword forearm tattoo gets overgrown with flowers (which flowers depend on verse context) ; a small strawberry tattoo on his hip (still trying to find a 'manly' enough strawberry tattoo for reference).
For verses with Romana : Michelangelo's Creazione di Adamo hands on his right rib ; rolling ocean waves in a half sleeve down his arm ; the letter 'R' on his left thumb ; a bullet-sized full moon, tattooed on his left ass cheek (thanks, Romana.) ; a hummingbird on his ribs.
For verses with Muriel : a compass on his right side, overlaid with an anchor ; 007 on his hip ; raven!Muriel specifically, a whole wing sleeve ; the design from the Gibson Hummingbird guitar down his right arm.
For verses with Rosie specifically : a half-sleeve rose tattoo.
For any Mariano/Nonny's muse verses, wedding date on his ring finger in Roman numerals.
Additionally, for any papa!Mariano verses, he gets his children's dates of birth usually starting with his left wrist.

I have more clumps of Snakeshead Fritillary than ever this year, despite the very dry summer last year. They are really plants for damp semi shade, so I feel very blessed to have them in random places in my garden. I planted a few fritillary bulbs 19 years ago, they did not come up, but perhaps 10 years ago, clumps started appearing.

Coming up in my cottage garden this month - a favourite of mine - snakes-head Fritillaries. This Spring bulb has had a chequered past with those who believe it to be native to Britain and those who favour a non-native status on account of the lack of cultural references in folklore, art, literature and architecture prior to 1736. It has therefore been (grudgingly to some) re-classed as a neophyte, having thought to have been introduced to botanical gardens for ornamental reasons and then managing to “jump the garden wall”. Their story reminded me of a BBC “You’re Dead To Me” history/comedy podcast I heard this week about Atlantis and how the lost city and civilisation was invented by Plato in 360BC (which I had no idea about). So many people believe its existence to be true but there is a distinct lack of reference to it in culture, art, religious texts and other literature before this time. I wonder if there are any other examples of this where we think of something to have existed for all time, but a lack of historic cultural reference prior to a certain time is evidence against it. . . . . #historymatters #snakesheadfritillary #fritallariameleagris #easterplants #eostre #ēostre #springflowers #flowerfables #nativeplants #wildflowersuk #neophyte #ornamentalflowers #chequerboard #snakeshead #ornamentalbulbs #lostcityofatlantis #youredeadtome #youredeadtomepodcast (at Harrowby, Lincolnshire) https://www.instagram.com/p/CqpwYFUoGJM/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

An absolutely bumper year for Snakeshead Fritillaries!
We usually get about 2 or 3 shyly poking their heads on the Common. But this year there are suddenly dozens! (Including these albino ones, which I’ve never seen before.)

Apparently Vita Sackville-West called this "a sinister little flower, in the mournful colour of decay", I think it's beautiful. Fritillaria meleagris, the snake's head fritillary, other common names I swear I'm not making up but which seem to point to everyone absolutely hating it and its gothic, pixelated magnificence: Lazarus bell, leper lily, dead man's bell, death bell, doleful bells of sorrow drooping/mournful/solemn bell of Sodom, Madam Ugly, weeping widow and widow veil. If I ever get to plant a garden again the chequered lily is going top of my list. ______ #today #diary #calendar #photooftheday #lockdownproject #nature #naturephotography #flower #flowerphotography #flora #plant #fritillariameleagris #snakeshead #fritillary #purple #spring #surrey #uk #panasonic #lumixg9 #lumixuk https://www.instagram.com/p/CNZTvw3H5oO/?igshid=1njrg9bynwcd8

https://www.ecowatch.com/no-mow-may-bees.html
This is the first week in May, when many bees in the U.S. wake up from their winter hibernation and smell the flowers.
Now, you can support these essential pollinators in their search for nectar by participating in No Mow May and letting wildflowers grow on your lawn.
“[W]hen we leave our weeds, or things we would normally call weeds, to grow, those are like little cheeseburgers for our pollinators, and they’re able to get some cheap calories really, really fast and put on some weight that will give them a leg up for the season,” Lawrence University assistant biology professor Israel Del Toro told NPR.
No Mow May was first championed by Plantlife in the UK, where it is gaining traction. The group said that a growing percentage of the participants in its Every Flower Counts citizen science survey were choosing not to cut their grass for a month, as The Guardian reported. In 2019, 33.6 percent of flower counters didn’t mow their lawns; by 2021, that number had jumped to 78.8 percent. The 2021 survey counted more than 250 species of wild plants including rarely seen species like adder’s-tongue fern, meadow saxifrage, snakeshead fritillary and eyebright.

Regular readers will remember that I am growing tulips in pots to place in borders this year, instead on straight into the ground. This is to protect them from slug damage that makes the plant emerge distorted from the ground. These are April flowering tulips called Negrita. I ordered them from a catalogue and of course the colour is not quite what I expected, a deeper purple. But they go very well with nearby snakeshead fritillary that featured in my last post. I have later flowering tulips waiting in pots too for an attempt at succession colour.

This Week in the Garden
Get a new hat! Well, no, birds don’t hold weddings, but you know what I mean, romance is clearly in the air. Not only that but I think this pair have been house-hunting and strangely seem to quite fancy the box that house sparrows have occupied for the last two years. I always believed robins liked an open fronted box or some kind of quirky residence, like old flower pots - we had a nest once in one of our huge garden metal planters. It had a plant in it at the time, so spring/summer watering was off the rota.
Tumblr media
They’re a couple of lovely looking birds, visiting the feeders all the time, so we have high hopes for them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Most of our garden birds are lagging behind a bit this season, as noted by the first arrivals HERE.

Snakeshead Fritillary  with a contrasting Dandelion - perfect for the start of No Mow May
Crow mowed our grass last week, but left a wide margin at the bottom and an island shape. This year’s uninvited guest appearance is by Bugle. I’ve dug some up and potted them. It’s funny how we keep acquiring ‘weeds’ that are actually sold at the garden centres. It’s always said that weeds are simply plants that pop up in the wrong places according to the gardener.

Yesterday we had our deferred family Easter lunch and were lucky enough to be able to sit outside. Ms NW t E brought along a bird table that was surplus to requirements. Nuthatch was the first visitor, closely followed by the usual suspect. Butler gave up on the first attempt to climb the pole, but very shortly after they just launched from the bird bath like a free runner - the eye was on the prize and the prize was there for the taking <le sigh>

I’ve discovered two early purple orchids growing in the garden, well, the other side of the tree line, which is our garden, but not visible unless you go trekking.
I have to admit, I’m still struggling to identify the differences between the early purple (common) and the much rarer Green Winged Orchid which can be seen nearby at Scotney Castle Gardens front lawn. Ours is above and below are the Green Winged ones, both are very pretty.
Tumblr media
Whenever the feeders go really quiet I always look to see if the Sparrow Hawk’s around and sure enough, this male has a new perch in the big Christmas Tree.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He was certainly an ominous presence but we didn’t see him take anything on this visit.
Tumblr media
As for the other ominous presence, well as far as bird food supplies are concerned, this one was fended off with a bribe of a seeded crust soaked in gravy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Talk about its eyes being bigger than its tummy. It was quite a struggle to make off with this piece, but sure enough, where there’s a will there was definitely a way.
