THE BLOGGIES 2023: FINALISTS
Tumblr media
(If you just want to skip to the list of BLOGGIE finalists, scroll to the "Who Are The BLOGGIES?" section below.)
+++
WHAT ARE THE BLOGGIES?
Awards for some of the best tabletop roleplaying game (TTRPG) blog posts to come out in 2022. There will be five awards: Best Theory Blogpost, Best Gameable Blogpost, Best Advice Blogpost, Best Review Blogpost, and, the biggest one, Best Blogpost.
I won Best Blogpost, last year. So I am hosting the BLOGGIES, this year.
+++
WHY ARE THE BLOGGIES?
Blogs are worth celebrating. Barring the actual playing of actual games, they are our most fertile field, our most volatile laboratory. Longform, text-based, and informal---they are a place to jot down our most outre design ideas. Free and publicly available---they are a vector for open debate and serendipitous discourse. Perhaps most importantly: relatively free of algorithmic social-media pressures---they are the best chance we have at a cultural memory.
I got into TTRPGs because of blogs.
The BLOGGIES are, at best, an affirmation of the above. At least, they are a way to celebrate 64 excellent blog posts from the last year, and maybe get them in front of people who did not read them the first time.
+++
HOW ARE THE BLOGGIES?
Nominations: I put an open call for blog-post nominations on Christmas 2023; I also canvassed the TTRPG communities I am part of. Nominated posts had to be from between 1 December 2022 to 31 December 2023.
I closed the nomination period on 1 Jan 2024 with 149 blog posts for consideration. I read / re-read them all.
I chose a slate of 64 finalists, according to the following metrics, in order:
Enthusiasm---a post got multiple nominations;
Diversity---no one blog was allowed to be a finalist more than once in a category (except the Reviews category, where this rule was tied to individual writers, due to shared review blogs);
Notability---a post was extraordinary in presenting a novel idea, addressing an important subject, or reflecting a community current.
Obviously, that last metric is highly subjective, and limited to my knowledge and perspective in the scene. I did my best.
I will not have final final say. Finalists will go head to head, vying for to be anointed best of the best by ballot. The bracket was seeded in order of number of nominations received. The BLOGGIES await your vote, o TTRPG folx.
+++

It is difficult to describe how hard it was for me to whittle down the list of nominees to these finalists. I consider each of these 64 a landmark in 2023's TTRPG thinkings, and the folks from which they issue essential reading, going forward. They already deserve a prize.
So here it is, dear bloggers: a hand-carved linocut "finalist's pin" graphic you are free to use on your sites / posts, should you wish:

Thank you for writing! And good luck in the coming rounds of voting!

CORRECTION: A blog post from 2021 (Not All Crunch Is the Same, from A Knight At The Opera), was included in the soft-launch posting of this list. An error on the part of its nominator, compounded by a data-entry error on my part. It has since been replaced by a post from the same blog with the actual most nominations (The Genres the OSR Can't Do). I have also double-checked my lists and all finalists. Apologies for my error!

Now that the Nace girlies has been fed may I get your (and other baby boos') attention for me moment :3?
As you may know I will be joining 2 Joker Out gigs in March. As some of you that met me on the käärijä EU tour might also know I had some custom stickers with me at those gigs I attended, and since it was this big a success I want to do it again.
And so the upcoming week(s) I will be focusing my time on making a new set of stickers this time with the Joker Out boys :D!!
The plan is to start of with making one for each member (to get back into the flow) and one for each gig I'm attending which will be
Helsinki day 2 (03/03 2024)
Malmö (03/15 2024)
Here's where I need your help.
So far I have ideas for only 4 out of the 7 stickers and only two of said four ideas are sketched yet. (see picture below)
If you guys have any suggestions for what would make a good sticker for any bandmember but Kris and Bojan + the two gigs hit me!!
I am especially looking for ideas including Jure, Nace, and the Malmö gig (since for Jan I am tempted to do 'sparklative' and for Helsinki I am pretty sure I will do 'three kaksin ananas lonkero')
That's all ^V^
Again, feel free to throw ideas at me :3 I myself will probably spend tomorrow "researching" (watching the documentaries again and maybe some interviews?) so we'll see what happpens xD
Sketches I have so far:

🐉 Year of the Dragon Lunar New Year DMBJ Treat Exchange 🐉
Tumblr media
We are going to HOP (get it… Year of the Rabbit!) into 2023 with an idea that is a new format for the DMBJ Fandom. The Lunar New Year Treat Exchange is a slow burn of an exchange, with low pressure and plenty of time to create, and is open to fan creators of all types - writers, artists, vidders, gif makers, and all others.
Based on the Fandom Stocking and Fandom Giftbox exchanges that used to run on LiveJournal and Dreamwidth, no-one will be assigned to create a gift for any specific person - instead, anyone who would like a treat signs up with their wishlist of characters, ships, likes, and prompts (and DNWs!). This list is open for browsing, and anyone who feels inspired to create for anyone else is free to do so and add the treat to the AO3 collection for the event. All treats will then be revealed at the Lunar New Year!
Since the New Year for ‘Year of the Rabbit’ is so soon (22 Jan 2023), the first LNY reveal will be for the ‘Year of the Dragon’, on 10 February 2024.
This exchange is open to all the DMBJ canons - if it’s DMBJ, then it’s eligible! Since all treats are to be posted to the AO3 collection, you will need an AO3 account to participate – if you don’t have one, you can request an invitation code here, or ask for an invitation from existing AO3 members.
🐉 Schedule 🐉
Sign-ups open: January 22nd, 2023 - The Year of the Rabbit
Sign-ups close: October 30th, 2023
Deadline for all treats completed and posted: January 21st, 2024
‘Pinch Hit’ period to ensure everyone signed up has at least one treat: January 21st - February 9th, 2024
Treats reveals: February 10th, 2024 - The Year of the Dragon
Creator reveals: February 17th, 2024
🐉 Guidelines 🐉
1. You can start creating treat fills whenever you like - you do not have to wait for sign-ups to close.
2. You do not have to sign up with a request yourself in order to create a treat for someone else.
3. While you do not have to create a treat for someone else if you sign up with requests for treats yourself, we ask that you do create at least one treat.
4. When choosing requests to treat for, please prioritise anyone who does not yet have a treat (the list of requests will be regularly updated to show Y/N as to whether or not someone has a treat fill yet).
     a. If there is anyone without a treat fill by the time of the deadline, mods will ask for people to create treats so that everyone who signed up receives at least one treat.
5. Your creation/s must focus on your recipient’s requested characters or ship (or one or more of their requested ships, if they have nominated multiple ones). While unrequested background ships are fine (unless listed as a Do Not Want), if it is a shippy creation then the focused ship/s must be one or more of the requested ships.
6. You will be expected to create a treat matching your recipient’s request. Filling any specifying prompts is not obligatory, but try to create something you honestly think your recipient will enjoy!
7. You must not include anything that your recipient has listed as a DNW (Do Not Want). Not even as a one-line throwaway reference.
8. The minimum requirements for the treats are 300 words for fic, one sketch on unlined paper for art (traditional or digital), a 3 panel manip or set of 3 single panel manips, a fanvid of any length, or any other fanwork of equal effort.
9. You can create as many treats as you like over the creation period.
10. This is an anonymous exchange: refrain from discussing your assignment in public. After the works are revealed, there’ll be a one-week anon period when the creators remain anonymous before the creator reveals.
11. You are welcome to post your treat to other sites in addition to AO3, such as Lofter, but please ensure that you do post it to AO3 as well so that your giftee gets the notification.
12. Most importantly: be excellent to each other!
🐉 Sign-Up Information 🐉
Sign-ups will take place via Google Form, starting on January 22nd, 2023. The form will be posted in a separate post when sign-ups begin.
The form will ask you for your name and for a link to your Dear Creator letter. Your Dear Creator letter is where you will fill out your request, and can be hosted anywhere you like - Tumblr, Dreamwidth, Google Docs, etc.
Sign-ups will close on October 30th, 2023. While no new sign-ups will be accepted after this date, you are still able to make amendments to your Dear Creator letter.
Treat creation can begin at any time after January 22nd - you do not have to wait for sign-ups to close before creating treats.
🐉 Dear Creator Letters 🐉
Your Dear Creator letter should contain the following information:
Preferred DMBJ canon: You have to choose at least one. If you’re willing to receive a treat in any canon era, you can just say “Any”!
Characters: You have to choose at least one character that you would like your treat to be about.
Relationships: These can be any platonic, romantic, or sexual relationships you would like in a treat. “None” is a perfectly valid answer here.
General Likes: This isn’t a place for detailed prompts, just general themes you enjoy. E.g. getting together, established relationship, alternate universe, dark, crack, hurt/comfort, etc.
DNW (Do Not Wants): Things that your creator must not include - squicks, triggers, or characters or things that you simply don’t like. Remember that you don’t owe anyone an explanation about why something is a DNW, and that DNWs are not meant to be taken personally. Just list the things you don’t like, “DNW: X, Y.”
Prompts/specific ideas: if you have any prompts, you can also put them here! You can be as general or as detailed as you’d like, but remember that while your creator will try to make the best gift for you, filling a specific prompt is not obligatory. You can include a crossover prompt (with other DMBJ verse or other canons entirely), but make sure it’s not the only prompt you have.
Please note in your Dear Creator letter if you are happy to receive a treat in Chinese.
You can make changes to your Dear Creator letter at any time, but please keep in mind that the later you make changes, the higher the chance that someone may have already created a treat for you that will not have those changes taken into account - this includes late DNW additions, so please try to ensure that any/all DNWs are listed as early as possible, and that late changes are just additions to prompts and things you like.
🐉 Multi-chapter Fics 🐉
If you are writing a multi-chapter fic for a treat and don’t want to drop the entire fic at once, these are the posting guidelines for it:
At least the first chapter posted by the deadline, ready for the reveals on February 10.
From February 10, aim to post at least one chapter daily.
All chapters of the fic must be posted by the time of creator reveals on February 17 (If the fic is more than 7 chapters long, then this will mean that multiple chapters will need to be posted on some days).
🐉 Other Info 🐉
If you have any questions, ask on the YuCun Discord or submit a question to @dmbjexchange or @thetombraidersguild
Please follow @dmbjexchange or @thetombraidersguild for announcements and reminders.

82-2581 - Little frog
After a day of #UrbanSketching on Saturday last week, I decided to sketch something simple on Sunday evening. This little green frog was given to my wife by my daughters partner. It’s legs and arms bend…and I think it’s supposed to sit in a position like it’s meditating. Sun-28-Jan-2024

Week 3: 22nd - 26th Jan
Research: Miss Sohee
Tumblr media
Sohee Park is a renowned womenswear designer based in London. Her sketches embody a very feminine expression while being based upon deeper themes such as the change from girlhood to adulthood. The designer has worked with many celebrities, including Priyanka Chopra, Cardi B and Ariana Grande. MISS SOHEE is the curator of many memorable looks, such as the shimmery turquoise set worn by Grande while she was a judge on ‘The Voice’ and Halle Bailey's look for the little Mermaid premiere in London.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Her most recent S/S 2024 collection particularly inspired me for its unique form of pattern, which reminded me of flowers. This design is a similar feature of my work, as I try to convey the traditional polish symbols in my garments through their shape and form, rather than applique. I found the varying forms of fabric manipulation in her garments particularly inspiring, as that is something that I wish to explore as well. This would not only help me develop my skills in terms of fashion but add a unique form of movement to my garments themselves.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also noticed her vibrant colour scheme. This was a key element in all of my work in movement so far; my lineups show variations of bold colours. She does this without looking tacky or oversaturated, which is very important to me as well. I also wish to subtly carry through an important theme of emigration as my form of movement through my work. MISS SOHEE’s garments effortlessly and effectively showcase her chosen themes, which is extremely inspiring to me.

Project Development 1: (Journey through the digital media)
After Completing the weekly projects, I chose the second week project for the further development. First, I was planned to make a motion graphics video to present the different stages of our media timeline. When I presented my idea Ian gave feedback that I have to add more to engage or do something different for the making the audience to interact with that.
I have already created the scenes and the sketch for the video. I began to think what should I do and finally I decided to make some VR or AR artefact to my project. In my tutorial session Xinge also gave more possible Idea to create more engaging to audience.
So, I borrowed a VR headset from our university loan store. But the attempt was failed because my laptop doesn’t support the VR headset. Then I changed my plan to do AR artefact.
youtube
After scanning the QR code, it will redirect to the app Aero Viewer, and we can see the output as shown below.
While comparing my weekly project I created different scenes to develop the idea as a motion graphics video.
Tumblr media
I created a rough sketch for the scenes.
Then I sketched each scene in ‘Sketchbook’ App.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was impressed by the art works who was created by Arosh Thevadathil, Known as Doodle Muni. Which I have already mentioned in my weekly project blog. His art work have unique style of drawing and that way of approach was so influenced me to make scenes.
While I went to London, I saw the Butterfly trail in Tottenham court road. That artefact impressed me and influenced a lot to create my own work model.
I used After effects for adding some motions to the scene.
Tumblr media

Scene 6

I used Adobe Premiere Pro for joining these clips and added some background music for that.
Tumblr media
For the AR part I used Adobe Aero to create the AR elements. I downloaded some 3d models and created a scene. I added Newspaper, Radio, Old TV, Computer, Mobile Phone and VR headset into scene and arranged in an order.
Tumblr media
This Project took almost 2 to 3 weeks to complete. I spent more time to resolve the issue with VR headset and but after finding the reason that my laptop doesn’t support the VR headset I chose the AR for immersive experience for the audience.
The other challenges I faced was the software Adobe aero was not stable in Windows and android phones. Maybe it is because of the developing stage of the software. But I managed to take output in my friend’s iPhone and it was perfect Output.
I am happy to say that I have learnt new skills like AR and some basics in After Effects. While I am focusing my career as Graphic designer-cum-motion graphic artist these skills will be more helpful to me as I can do some advanced level communication to the audience by applying some immersive experience to them.

Sophie Calle, Musee Picasso, Paris, Jan 2024
Funny, smart, crazy, so many ideas. Obsessed with death, she had all of her belongings appraised and brought to the exhibition from her house. She was homeless for a while and had an office at the museum, with a sign that said knock if you want to say hi. The second half of the show was devoted to her failed projects, all funnier than the last. Her pretending to be pregnant because of something she read online, her hiring a detective to find the other Sophie calles, her working with WIn wenders on a film, her devastated from a breakup and then getting bored ….

Dumped in august
Pierre dumped me in August. Quickly and over the phone. He needed a week on his own to think. So, I made a list of the words that foreshadow the end, words for leaving, and I did an internet search of break-up text messages. It seemed like a good idea but I stopped hurting too soon.

New Year's Resolutions
I don't really know what to put here, but I felt like writing something just to have it down, so here goes... I haven't done formal resolutions in a while but why not right??
For art there's the stuff I've already posted on here: I want to keep up the trend of 4 days of sketches posted on here every week as a minimum. The best of these will be posted to bluesky as well, which I've already started. And any supporters on Patreon can commission a sketch once a month as well, these sketches will be recapped on Patreon as well. There's also gonna be one fully rendered piece every other week, which can be voted on by supporters as well. I want to keep that schedule going for as long as I can, hopefully through the entirety of the year, but I don't want to promise a full years worth of anything because there's always some complication, but I'm trying to commit to at least a season of that schedule, so Jan-Mar. I kind of also want to get more engagement on my art, bluesky's been great at that but I think maybe finding some art communities could be helpful as well. (Tumblr's fun but there's almost no interaction from followers, at least for me.) Since I'm trying NSFW art now, I kind of also want to see if a strip game format could work, I just worry that I'll get no engagement but I want to try that at some point, since it seems fun.

https://bsky.app/profile/pqrachel.bsky.social
Moving off of art though, I need to start earning some actual money. I've been trying YouTube and some small gig stuff but I think get an actual paying job is probably my biggest resolution. I hate having to work, I just get so overwhelmed so easily, but it's unfortunately becoming a necessity. I'm also gonna go back to tracking all my money, I want to be able to see where it's going and assure myself I don't get fucking scammed like I did this year, fucking BS hidden subscriptions for something I bought.
For fun stuff, I want to visit my friends more. It's been a bit of a lonely year and I miss them. It's mostly just they live too far away or are having financial issues themselves and are stuck working and/or being exhausted from working, so it's not like anyone's fault but still I want to see them more. It's weird, for like all of my life friends have been there when family hasn't and but since my dad died but mostly recently family's been there a bit more now that friends haven't been as central to my experience. But yeah the lonely year's been hard emotionally and mentally.
And to not end on a sad note, gaming. I've been playing a lot of games this year, and even though I have a lot of time to game I want art and finding a job to take priority. That being said: I want to get better at Trackmania, keeping the trend of improving every season going; Marvel Snap I don't have any specific goals for but I do want to keep playing for a while; I want to beat expert mode Terraria, I'm in hardmode and enjoying it so far; for upcoming games there's Rivals 2, The Bazaar, Horizon Forbidden West (for PC), and a few more that hopefully will be released in 2024, all of which I look forward to playing and enjoying. And for my game, I've kind of lost motivation, art and playing games have been more fun than developing a game with practically no following, so while I'd like to work more on that right now I just don't care to.

Update #? 12/15/23
Hello i've hit a wall lol
I have like an outline of a plan for the next year but I just can't get to that part where you plan out actionable steps to achieve the goals. Like i get to the "study anatomy" part but then I blank. Right now i got:
2024:
Study fundamentals each month for a certain amount of time each day and track improvement/progress after each month
Then Jan: Form, Feb: Line, etc etc
But then I get stuck on like WHAT to do. Just practice? I want to practice in a way where the information sticks. Maybe I should make a specific sketchbook full of notes also? like the practice sketch page and then a note page if needed? I use to know how to do this type of shit but it's been years since ive studied art like this (looking back I really do think I was depressed which stopped me from actively working on my art but I was so busy with school and work and life overall to really noticed plus feeling like I didn't deserve to be depressed? idk but im fixing it now lol)
but even though I hit a wall i feel like im getting SOME progress down. It's just frustrating bc I'll sit there and go "ok NOW WHAT" ugh. This is just one part of it (I got a Career portion and this is the hobby portion etc)
I'm house/pet sitting right now (thurs-sun) so I'm hoping to get some of this shit figured out while I chill out with this dog and cat.
Touching grass has continued to be going well but I do miss just bullshitting on tumblr lol but this has been good for my productivity and mental health so I mean something is happening.
Anyways, byeee I guess Im doing an update each week lmao but it's been helping me kinda keep up momentum with my "social media break" other than just being on tumblr/twitter for hours on end bc i dont know what to do with myself (save me year plan and to do list ToT) I'm mostly doing this for myself anyways lmaoo
ok byyyeeee~

Blanksford Comic Release Schedule
So I've been stressing myself out trying to make the comic I'm working on too perfect, and it's really caused me to be incredibly unmotivated to work on it. This was supposed to be my fun no stress first comic, and that's what I'm getting back to.
So my plan is to just work on pages and release whatever I've got every two weeks. If I'm not fully done with the page by then, I'll release what I have and that'll be good enough. (I already have it fully planned out and I have sketches for every page too so even worst case it'll still be readable.) And then if I finish the scheduled pages early, I might go back to work on any unfinished pages or start the next pages early or whatever I'm feeling.
First Date (A Blanksford Comic One-Shot) is releasing on Jan 1st, 2024!
So starting on July 24th expect some actual Blanksford content. Then every other Monday after that expect one or two additional pages. (Possible updates on the in-between Mondays as well.) Then on Dec 25th all the main pages should be out, and then one week later on New Years' Day I'll release the full comic. It'll have any fixed pages, a bonus sticker page, along with the front and back covers.
I'm gonna do a free pdf release on here, my itch.io, maybe webtoons or tapas, and I'll at least do a physical print for myself but unless there's a lot of requests for more, it'll just be for me.
(And for anyone who is following my $500 charity bet on whether or not I finish this by 2023. If I manage to actually stick to this schedule then all the pages will be done by 2023, even if the release date is one day later than planned. So I won't have lost the bet.)
