#sponsored #travelwithmoon After nearly three months indoors, the world has (slowly) begun to open again. That is, the world immediately outside my Sacramento apartment. Since international travel is off the table for the moment, I’m sticking close to home (or at least to where home happens to be at the moment). I grew up in Southern California and when I was younger “Northern California” basically meant the San Francisco/Bay Area. North of that? Oregon, obviously. But San Francisco is (almost) literally only halfway to the California-Oregon border from Los Angeles. Northern California is a lot more than the Bay (and Sacramento). So last weekend, @paulinadao and I took @moonguides “Exploring the ‘real’ Northern California” and headed out (on our own) to Shasta-Trinity National Forest - the largest National Forest in California encompassing five wilderness areas - to explore (and stay at) some fire lookouts and guard stations. We climbed into the mountains (via car) by way of a network of forest roads. When we arrived at our destination, a guard station we had reserved, we were greeted by a thunderstorm that reminded me that I might not be that eager to return to sleeping in my tent in the wilderness, but eventually, the weather cleared and we got to enjoy some time outdoors. It brought back memories of my 2013 thru-hike on the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) - the trail does a large and sometimes hard-to-understand loop out west through the Shasta-Trinity National Forest before returning east resuming a more direct route north at the Oregon border (if you’re hiking northbound). Up next? More Northern California exploration - this time by way of Castle Crags State Park (also featured in the Moon: Northern California Road Trips Guide), another PCT landmark that I’m excited to revisit at a leisurely pace. @moonguides
