Obviously, the Alabama Supreme Court actually putting fetal personhood into law is another victory for creeping Christian Authoritarianism and yet another attack on health care, womens' rights, and bodily autonomy....but watching the Republicans flip their shit now that IVF clinics are in danger of closing is hilarious in a "the clown car is on fire" kind of way.
Because of course this was going to happen. Fetal personhood and anti-surrogacy (especially in the context of same-sex parents) has been bouncing around in conservative religious and legal circles (but what's the difference?) for decades, with those pesky liberals warning about it for just as long. Anyone with an inkling of awareness of the issue could have seen it coming.
So the fact that they were caught so off guard is myopic enough. And they're panicking for a very good reason, because yanno who generally goes to IVF clinics?
The people who can afford it.
Certainly the abortion bans in various states were bad, but if you had a lot of disposable income you could just...go to another state. Extremely inconvenient, yes, but not insurmountable. But this?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oh my god, now the far-right pro-life politics that you've been cultivating for going on fifty years is now in a position to affect people with money? People that matter? Now you have to try and contend with the very extremist judges you installed that don't have to worry about getting elected and whose decisions are now putting you on the political chopping block?
Join us the in misery you're created for everyone else, assholes.

But for real, one of the few bright spots in the US political landscape at present is that voters keep telling republican pro life assholes how wrong they are.

This is the Asshole who is now Speaker Of The House, an Election Denier ( ... among other questionable political positions)
" ... Johnson also objected to certifying Biden’s electoral win and was one of the architects of a legal attack on the election that consisted of arguing that states’ voting accommodations during the pandemic were unconstitutional. He led a group of 126 Republican lawmakers in filing an amicus brief to the Supreme Court alleging that authorities in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and Michigan had “usurped” the constitutional authority of state legislatures when they loosened voting restrictions because of the pandemic. ... "
" ... Johnson, who serves on the House Armed Services Committee, was one of 57 lawmakers — all of them Republicans — who voted against a $39.8 billion aid package for Ukraine in May. ... "
" ... Johnson, a constitutional lawyer who identifies as a Christian, opposes abortion and has celebrated the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, the landmark 1973 ruling that had established constitutional protections for abortions nationwide. The antiabortion nonprofit Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America gives Johnson an A+ ranking on this issue, stating that he “has voted consistently to defend the lives of the unborn and infants,” including by “stopping hard-earned tax dollars from paying for abortion, whether domestically or internationally.” ... "
" ... Johnson has positioned himself on the far right of the political spectrum on several social issues, even within the current conservative Republican conference. Notably, he introduced legislation last year — modeled after Florida’s “don’t say gay” bill — that would have prohibited discussion of sexual orientation and gender identity, as well as related subjects, at any institution that received federal funds. The Human Rights Campaign, a pro-LGBTQ+ civil rights organization, gave Johnson a score of zero in its latest congressional scorecard. ... "

Arcane HC - Thoughts on Piltover
Honestly? I feel like Silco has the wrong impression of Piltover.
At least, the common Piltovans.
Like, I actually don't think that most Topsiders actually know about what actually goes on in the Undercity. They don't know about the mistreatment & extremely high death rates or anything. All they know is what they're told by the people in charge.
If they did, I think that the Counsel would have a lot more trouble on their hands because Piltovans are... just people.
And, in my personal experience, people generally try to be good. Like, it takes a very hurt person to not want to try.
What if the general populous of Piltover actually believes that the Zaunites are being taken care of? What if there are food drives & clothes drives & charities to provide money & medicine & to send resources to the Lanes & they're actually very successful because everyone figures 'hey, we don't need these things as much as they do, they'll go to waste anyway if we don't, so why not give it to them', but something happens to them? Like, maybe it's all being sent to the frontlines to help with this war we hear about in the show? Or some group of Anti-Zaun assholes takes it all? Or whatever.
Like, drives & charities happen in real life, so why wouldn't they take place here? It's just that... the idea that there wouldn't be pro-Zaun activists & Zaunite rights activists or Zaun charities is extremely unusual to me & even seems very unrealistic. Like, look at the U.S.! Slaves had supporters in the form of a Union & there was even a civil war over it! One that split an entire country in half! And it was the people who had the most to gain from the status quo who did it! The Republican party exists because people thought that slavery was immoral! There have to be people who want to do right by their fellow man or it's much too cynical!
Like, be as pessimistic as you want, but the simple fact that slavery is no longer as widespread as it was proves that people care more for their fellow man than some would have us to believe.
Sure, maybe there was a hidden agenda behind it. We don't know, but at the end of the day, people who were once considered 'less than' now have more freedoms because of it.
I bet there's an entire lab in the biology department of the Academy dedicated to phytoremediation, which is a study of hybridizing plants with the express purpose of detoxifying the environment. As well as a club to study subterranean flora, fauna, & fungi.
Or what if Viktor has a project in mind to create an artificial sun in order to build greenhouses down there?
All with the intent of purifying Zaun to make it able to grow it's own crops. This would allow the Undercity to be more independent of Piltover.
It'd be one small part of something I call the Zaunite Vitalization Effort, or ZVE.
I bet there's a section of the Underground that's been set aside with the hopes of turning it into a sort of farming district. I'd call it the Duskmeadows.
I just... think about it! I say these things from personal experience because as a member of the middle class, myself, my family donates food & money ourselves because why wouldn't we? There's also missionaries to underprivileged societies & Christians donate their money with the expectation that it's going to provide supplies for those who need it literally every Sunday.
It'd be unrealistic & nihilistic for it not to be the same with Piltover.
Hell, there are even a handful of rich people irl who actually use there money for genuinely good things to actually help people! Look at Mr. Beast! He payed for a lifechanging surgery to cure the blindness of a thousand complete strangers! There are really, genuinely good people out there of every class! Even if he did it for the clout, it's still a very, very good thing he did that legitimately helped people!
And, imagine if it were true that there were charities & drives & all this other stuff with the idea of providing things for the Undercity & all those resources weren't going to their intended destination & the Pilties learned of this.
I imagine that there'd be riots in the streets!
What if all it ever took to establish the nation of Zaun... was spreading awareness of the situation throughout the Piltovan middle & lower classes? Even the higher classes to a degree!
Hell, what if we ended up with a reenactment of the French Revolution & the invention of the guillotine? What if it was started by Piltover citizens themselves?
And if this were true, how would the Zaunites react to this??
How would Vi, Jinx, Vander, & Silco react?
I mean, it'd basically fly in the face of everything they believed!
---
Now, I'm a baby fan. Brand new to the fandom, so my apologies if I'm wrong, but this is just my perspective.
Most of my knowledge of League comes from watching Arcane & I have little to no knowledge of the League of Legends game.
So, please keep this fact in mind.

Hi Pia, I was talking to a friend the other day and we were debating whether it was ok or not to enjoy media made by people with different political views than your own.
She said it wasn't but I said it depends on the person but also because I think we shouldn't self-censor ourselves or judge the quality of the media by the opinions of the person/s making it. As someone who's studied media what are your takes on this? Thanks in advance ( ^_^)
Anon, this subject is way too broad for me to answer in a single post response.
It also highly depends on what the media is, and what the politics are. There's a difference between consuming something (and giving money to someone) who's just a mild asshole, and someone who is a literal rapist and has never experienced consequences for it, or someone who is literally giving money to movements that will indirectly cause the deaths of trans teenagers and is still actively doing that / not dead yet.
If you're the kind of person to give money to someone who will contribute - and has contributed - to the deaths of trans teenagers, well it's a free world and you can do that, but maybe don't expect to keep a lot of your trans friends and trans ally friends, and you yourself would not be a trans ally. You're not self-censoring, and the world isn't stopping you from doing that, but you might be someone who needs to feel more empathy for the people around you, or work on understanding why giving money to folks with monstrous politics leads to more monstrous politics.
If you don't want to live in that kind of world, you have choices you can make. But they're your choices.
It's not 'censoring' myself to choose not to participate in the works of something by someone who is doing things that could lead to a less safe world for me and fellow trans people as an example. I'm making a choice because I care about other people and because I genuinely would not enjoy the works of a person who created stuff who has said online: 'If you participate in my created works I'm going to assume you support my views (and so will everyone else).'
Making personal choices like this is not censoring, anon. (And I'm pro-censorship, lol, so even if it was, I'd still be like 'yeah contextually sometimes you have to' - censoring =/= banning). Technically censorship is something that can only be done by controlling bodies and government authorities anyway.
But we have to make choices all the time. If your friend is raped by another friend of yours, but that second friend buys you dinner all the time, do you keep seeing that second friend because like, hey free dinner! If your answer to this question is 'of course I would' - then like, well, I don't know what to say to that. We probably can't have a meaningful conversation about compassion or humanity.
Different levels of politics have different ramifications to different areas of society and different people. I'm trans, so I'm not going to support transphobic creators. It's really that simple for me. I don't want my fellow trans people to keep getting hurt by anti-trans rhetoric, and I'm pretty tired of it myself, so I avoid it, and I avoid the people who support folks who literally enable it to keep happening. It's an active issue with active and current repercussions. We're not talking in this instance about the politics of a dead author who can't hurt anyone anymore, or someone in prison, or someone who is so old they have disappeared offline into the ether.
If, on the other hand, I find out someone's a Republican but in all other ways they're mostly just living their life and not trying to actively harm people by funneling all of their personal money into things that will like...cause suicides due to promoting say, transphobia, then yeah, I might still engage with their stuff or support their stuff.
Likewise, if I watch or give money to a movie made by Weinstein, I will often think of all the other crew members and actors who had nothing to do with that behaviour who still deserve residuals or royalties.
Some cases are complicated, but some aren't. Some really are 'this person has said they will give their money to causes and governments that want to hurt us and eradicate us' and supporting that is the action of a transphobic person, even if that person doesn't feel transphobic. If the actions cause more hate towards trans people, it's a transphobic action, and it's kind of that simple.' And trust me, you can be trans and still be transphobic. We see internalised phobias all the time, everywhere.
Yes, I'm talking about JKR here, because I find this kind of question is usually about some obviously monstrous living person who is still doing monstrous things in a very ongoing way, vs. just a regular 'hey I found out this writer is pro-fracking and I hate fracking what do I do' or 'hey this author writes a ship I don't like should I hate them.'
(Look this might not be about JKR but it's certainly the first thing that's going to come to most trans people's minds and I'm trans, anon).

It always baffles me how daft and stupid people that vote democrat are. Me personally? I live in Texas and I vote Independent. Unless I'm faced with a choice of a literal psychopath or an asshole I don't really like all that much. Which in the last Governor race, it was one such case. Similarly, when it comes to voting for president I feel the same. I'd sooner vote Independent or write in something then vote either side unless it was like the last 2 races. Which was literal tyrant wanna be warhawks (Clinton & Biden) or Orange man.
What's more, the ability of people that vote democrat to turn a blind eye to actual facts. Take this tweet, which for the most part is pretty tame, and then the replies, which I will address.
Tumblr media
Now, First and foremost, I will not make the claim that Trump paid back all his loans. However, I find it suspect all of a sudden, after his run at president where he became the most villainized man in history second only HITLER (because Auth Leftists are morons that can't condemn genocidal communist dictators) that "We are investigating every grain of sand in his life to destroy this person who supposedly wronged us". Ok.....so why now all of a sudden? Oh right because now we need him out of a presidential race. Got it.
Ok so now to the replies.
Tumblr media
Most of these can be summed up with one reply. "Banks and Lenders assess property values, and will send someone or several someone's in order to make a value judgement of an asset or property before giving out a loan.
However to answer Kit, No he has not been found Guilty. He has been pressed by a judge (Unilaterally) that RAN on burying Trump. That was what she RAN ON. No investigations. No facts to go off of. Just "Elect me and I will destroy this man and everything he has". And again only after he got into office. Prior to that he was the golden child of NY.
We call that a conflict of interest and she should be disbarred for it.
To Proud-Democrat I repeat. HE DID NOT PERSONALLY ASSESS THE PROPERTY VALUE YOU MORON! The banks and lenders 100% did.
To Rae & American Woman Same thing as above. Literally exact same thing as above.
And this is why I hate Democrat voters. And before someone goes on some tirade about "Republican Voters". Bruh. Conservatives typically HATE Republicans. They just hate Democrats more. And honestly aside from people that still get all of their news wholesale from Fox and nothing but Fox, Most Conservatives would probably sooner vote Independent with a viable candidate. And other people might go, "WELL WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER LAWS TRUMP BROKE!". Idk. Let's look at them shall we?
Accused of trying to steal the election. Except everything he did in that process was legal. He asked if there was anything that he could do. Up to and including asking his VP which electors to pick. Funny fact it is legal for a state to have different sets of electors. It happened during the Nixon years. Of which helped him win. Those rules have never been changed even now. And what's more, there WAS fraud. How much? We don't know. And we likely won't know until 10-20 years from now when the people that claim there is none will go, "OH well it's good there was fraud so Orange man stayed out of office....causing us to go to war with Russia, China, Iran, etc, etc, etc."
Accused of assaulting a woman over 20 years ago. Possibly over 40 years ago. Now let me be clear. Could this have happened? Sure. Did it? We have no idea. And 20-40 years is too long ago to have a decisive verdict on it. (Which brings me to another point which is the legality of the charges. So aside from statute of limitations, american citizens are allowed a right to a trial, by a jury of their peers. However, those peers must be impartial. NY is ANYTHING but impartial. They could bring charges of assassination through ninja skills on a foreign leader and NY would STILL CHARGE HIM just to do it.)
Quid Pro Quo. So the only evidence they had that this supposedly even happened was more or less ONE GUY. This man state that TRUMP expressly stated that he did not want a quid pro quo. HOWEVER, that man also believed Trump DID IN FACT want one, despite saying exactly to the contrary. What's more, let me remind all of you, Joe Biden, did that EXACT THING as VP to protect his financial asset of a son at a Ukrainian Energy company he had no business working at the board of. (1:30 Is the start of the segment.)
youtube
So all in all. MOST of the things Trump was accused of doing were outright false, or falsely placed on him. And it's because he was a human molotov cocktail. He didn't want any new wars. He wanted to bring more soldiers back from the Middle East. The Economy was GREAT. We were bringing jobs back to the US, and we had Remain in Mexico. Which was GREAT legislation. And it said, "If you are coming to the US for "Asylum" and you pass through another county on the way here you have to stay in THAT country until you can legally get processed.
Whereas now, DEM VOTING residents of NY are being told they are going to pay Billions to house, feed, and process illegals. When their own state is crumbling under the weight of its own corruption.
Which brings me to this point. Both sides need to talk about when there side is doing wrong. And most of the people I know that vote Rep very much DO talk about when their guys do wrong. The issue is that people that vote Dem seldom actually do. It's always, "Your side did X" and then when anyone else says, "OK but you side did Y and that's worse", We all get greeted with, "I don't care because at least he's not right wing. He could kill kids for all I care. I don't actually care what he does so long as it furthers my sides ideals".
And therein lies the issue. Democrats and their primary voters DO NOT GIVE A F*CK about morals. Because they have none. It's a very much "At all cost" mentality. And often based on LIES. Because if there is one thing Dems are great at, it's manipulation of information. The "Silver Tongued Devil" as it were. That's pretty much them. The founders of the KKK. The opposition to Civil Rights. And the Party of Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton who said they were mentored by a clansman. The parties never flipped. They just became better liars.
(This post is in no shape or form endorsement of the Republicans. Because frankly speaking that party and it's primary voter faction has its own issues. But this post isn't about them)

I hope that I don’t come across as terribly aggressive/condescending, but I would ask you to consider what Biden’s administration has accomplished in material terms for people in the US. Is your life improved in the last four years in any terms relating to Biden’s presidency? What about your friends? Have you seen anything on the topic written by marginalized groups you don’t interact with? And I don’t mean these as purely rhetorical questions; I would be really interested to hear such stories!
I am a trans woman in the US (though in Massachusetts, where our rights are a bit less precarious than many southern states), so you can imagine that I’m not excited by the prospect of four more years of Republican rule. But from my perspective it seems as though all of the really dangerous attacks on our rights have come at the state level, whilst Biden’s position has been to condemn these offenses in speech, without mounting any real fight on our behalves. And it’s the same with abortion, where the Dems will broadly condemn the conservative attacks on reproductive rights, but then Nancy Polosi says that “we need to make space for pro life democrats within the party.” Police killings have not stopped rising since Biden took office, and southern border policy has gone unchanged. The deaths of progressive policies like student loan forgiveness and the Build Back Better plan may not be Biden’s fault, per se, but at the end of the day he still failed to push these plans through the opposition we all anticipated he’d face. Shouldn’t we be looking for a progressive candidate who may bring better strategy to these fights? And his support for Israel isn’t unrelated to these failures: when conservatives ask how we will pay for things, an easy answer is to stop giving billions of dollars in military aid to a country that’s killed more than 5,000 children in the course of a month. The IDF is currently bombing Gaza with the money that wasn’t used to pay our student loans!
You asked what the plan for marginalized groups over another four years of Republican rule would be. But, then, for most of this country’s history the government has been hostile to our existence, no? We have survived this long not by the grace of benevolent politicians, but by the strength of our communities to care for one another, and losing that strength will cost us much more dearly than losing the white house for a term. Correct me if I’m wrong, but it doesn’t feel to me like Biden has gotten us more than an inch further than we’ve already gotten ourselves, and I would much rather look to see how we can organize with other oppressed peoples around the world for our collective liberation than bargain their lives away in the hopes of another four years of the partial acceptance we have to-day!
I actually had a wonderful interaction with someone else on this topic too, my stance has changed. Thank you for being reasonable and no you did not come across as aggressive or condescending. Honestly I've only had one or two people being shitty about it, but a good amount of people being like you and talking relatively calmly and respectfully to me about what genuinely doesn't make sense about my previous stance. People engaging in genuine good faith have VASTLY outnumbered the people who have just called me an asshole :P and it changed my mind too
