10. what’s something you’re excited for? & 26. what movie do you want to live in? 💚
something I’m excited for
I’m headed to London again in April for the next Star Wars convention, I enjoy traveling; the last time I flew to the UK on British Airways, I felt like a princess. The flight attendant asked me if I wanted red or white wine with my dinner 🥺
a movie I want to live in
For someone who’s had escapist fantasies for most of his life, this is a surprisingly hard question. I want to be a knight, also an X-wing pilot, also someone who enjoys familial affection without having to ask for it or nearly pass out while standing over a concrete floor and gave my concerns during the moment when I’m not feeling well dismissed with “no, you’re not going to pass out.”
I’d like to be an X-wing pilot in the secret good Star Wars sequel trilogy where: all three films are coherent, I get captured by the First Order and it’s exactly as kinky as I want, I get to kiss multiple women, and the Resistance is referred to as the Resistance throughout the three new movies instead of falling back on lazy writing and “rebel scum”

ComiCon: The Right Costume
Mike has an intense encounter with a mysterious cosplayer.
by AlexRaistov, Listen to the Podcast at Steamy Stories.
Tumblr media
The con has been fairly packed this year. And now that they're getting some big name guests, like Doctor Who's Matt Smith and Alex Kingston are here.  I think it's going to give Fan Expo Boston a run for its money. Hell, maybe even New York ComiCon. I think the fact that the convention center is connected to the hotel is a huge advantage.
The contest was at 2pm this afternoon, so I wanted to head over and register early. Making my way through the crowds, I got stopped a couple of times to do the "Gaston Pose" with the Wolverine claws popped out. There was even a couple dressed as Beauty and the Beast, so we got a couple of pics together. I'll text them to you later.
Needless to say I got there later than I expected, so I was second to last in line. But it was fine because while I was waiting my turn to go up on stage, I found myself chatting with a dude from New York who was up with his buddy for the weekend. The guy was dressed as mashup of Deadpool and Eleven from Stranger Things. It was hysterical: a full Deadpool costume but with a blonde wig and dress.
We got to talking about the con and cosplaying and after a few minutes he said with a chuckle, "Dude, be careful. I think the local law enforcement is checking you out."
I gave him a strange look because I had no fucking clue what he was talking about. He motioned with his head and I turned around.
So picture this: two girls, both in variations of the 'Slave Leia' bikini from 'Return of the Jedi.' One girl's costume was all white and she was wearing a Stormtrooper helmet. The other was in all black, wearing a Darth Vader mask and a flowing cape.
And holy shit their bodies were fucking amazing. You know I've always been a boob man. Both girls were easily 32-34B and their brassieres were doing a wonderful job of highlighting their fantastic assets. Both of them had stunning hourglass figures. When 'Madame Vader' turned and leaned in to say something to her Stormtrooper, it was pretty clear by the amount of skin she was showing, there was most likely nothing under the long black loincloth.
I watched as the Stormtrooper nodded to something 'Madame Vader' said. At this point I didn't know what else to call her. She then lifted her prop gun and started walking in our direction.
"You're in for it now man," said Eleven Deadpool.
The sexy Stormtrooper came right up to me and pointed her weapon.
"You. Rebel Scum," she barked, "You're to come with me immediately."
I raised my eyebrow, my cigar jammed firmly in my teeth. I figured what the hell, if we were gonna do this, have fun with it. "Rebel scum?" I growled, "Sweetheart, do I look like rebel scum to you?"
The trooper pressed the nozzle of her weapon into my chest. "Now."
I glanced over to Eleven Deadpool who shrugged, "Don't look at me man. I'm a mercenary, remember?"
I leaned in towards the Stormtrooper and grunted, "You know, no one fights like Gaston. And with these claws I bet it would be an interesting fight. But okay, I'm game."
As I stepped away from the line, I heard my new friend shout, "Vaya Con Dios, my son! Go with God.”
The Stormtrooper led me over to 'Madame Vader' who had her hands on her curvy hips. I also got a chance to admire her thigh-high black boots, laced up the front with buckles going up the sides. She had a black belt around her waist which hung a light saber hilt. As I got closer and saw a tan line on her exposed hip, I was convinced more than ever that she was wearing nothing underneath.
'Madame Vader' looked at me from head to toe.
"Something I can do for you?" I said in my best Hugh Jackman voice.
For a moment she stood there silently. I almost expected to hear the raspy Vader breathing.
"You!" she said finally in a commanding but very sultry voice, "will follow me. There will be no questions. Is that understood?"
So okay, you know I don't like games or bullshit or anything like that. But there was something about this situation...I'm just gonna say it: I got rock hard. I swore my dick was going to explode out of my pants.
Again, I can practically hear you laughing. But we've always been pretty open about this kind of shit, so obviously I'm not going to stop now.
Anyway, I rubbed my scruffy chin, (careful not to poke myself with my claws, and took the cigar out of my mouth.
"You're Jedi mind tricks ain't working here, sister," I snarled, "But I'll play along for now."
Without another word, she turned, her cloak sweeping behind her. I felt a poke in my back: the Stormtrooper was nudging me to start moving.
I followed 'Madame Vader' around a large curtain that led to behind the stage. From there we walked to a set of doors that led to a maintenance corridor. Now I'm not going to lie, this was all starting to make me a little bit nervous. Sexy as these two were, I had no idea who they were, what they looked like under their helmets or what was really going on. I was just about to say enough is enough and head back into the main convention floor when we stopped in front of another door marked "storage."
'Madame Vader' reached down with one of her gloved hands and pulled down on the handle, opening the door.
"Inside," she commanded. I looked at her and the Stormtrooper, who appeared to be setting up for guard duty. I shrugged and stepped inside.
The room was full of stacked chairs and folding tables. One table was set up with a few chairs around it. There were some papers on top of it. My guess is some of the Con organizers had probably used this room for planning the floor layout.
The door closed and it was just me and 'Madame Vader' in the room. As she walked past me, her hands lifted up and unlocked the chain holding her cape together. She let it drop to the floor.
With the cloak gone, I was able to get a better look at her body. The thin straps of her black brassiere didn't fully cover her tan lines, so I could tell she definitely enjoyed spending time in the sun. She was also more toned than I realized, though her hips still had a very lovely curve to them. Sure enough, the rear loincloth, which had up until now been hidden by her cape, was a little bit narrower than the front one, and her amazing ass, cheeks were poking out ever so slightly on either side.
With her still to me, she turned her masked head slightly.
"I understand no one fights like Gaston," she said, continuing with a deep, ominous voice.
"So I hear," I replied gruffly.
"I wonder," she said with a dramatic pause, "if no one fucks like Gaston?"
Now you know it takes a hell of a lot to throw me for a loop and leave me speechless. But there I was, eyes wide and my mouth partially open in shock.
'Madame Vader' removed her gloves, revealing black nail polish on perfectly manicured fingers.
"No response?" she mused, "Well perhaps not in words. But other parts of you appear to," she pointed at my bulging crotch, "be speaking for themselves."
Now let me just remind you, she was still wearing that fucking helmet. I literally had no idea who this person was.
And, God help me, I was turned on like never before.
She walked over and sat on the edge of the folding table, her legs spread and the black loincloth falling between them. Slowly she lifted the cloth to the side, confirming what I had all but surmised from the minute I saw her.
Her bare pussy was now right there for me to see. Her puffy pink lips were wide open, glistening and extremely inviting.
"This is fucking crazy." I said aloud.
"The door is right behind you," 'Madame Vader' replied nonchalantly, "My guard is only outside to ensure we are not disturbed. If you wish to leave you can at any time."
She reached down between her legs and spread her pussy lips wider while her fingers began to explore her tantalizing, wet hole.
"Alternatively, you could come over here, eat me out and then bend me over this table and fuck me from behind."
So again, you know it takes a lot to stun me. And believe me, I was stunned.
But I'm also not fucking stupid.
I removed my gloves with the Wolverine claws built in and set them on the closest chair next to me. I then made my way over to the table and sank to my knees in front of 'Madame Vader.'
I inhaled the wonderful, sweet musky smell that was coming from her pussy. I was just about to dive in when I stopped and looked up at her, "I don't suppose you're taking that off, are you?"
"Are you going to ask questions that you already know the answer to, or are you going to begin," she said ominously.
I shook my head, "No ma'am." I replied and dove into her beautiful, wet slit.
I let my tongue casually explore her red pussy lips, enjoying the sweet and savory flavor. There was an aching moan from under the mask.
"More," she whimpered, dropping the authoritative tone in her voice.
My tongue began to flick up and down quickly. Her hands slammed down and gripped the edge of the table as she began to grind her pelvis in my face.
I brought my hand up to my mouth and paused my licking just briefly to lick my thumb. As I resumed, I let my thumb slip into the upper folds of her slit, searching for her clit. It wasn't hard to find -- it was like a small cherry pit, hard and inviting. Her breaths came shallow and for a moment I wondered if she was going to pass out under the helmet.
"Please," she begged without the slightest hint of any of her former bravado, "Oh God, I'm so close."
My thumb kept playing with her pulsing button as I licked feverishly. After several more seconds I withdrew my thumb and attacked her clit directly with my tongue.
That was the right move to push her right over the edge.
"Oh my god oh my god oh my God," she cried under her mask, "I'm coming. Oh Jesus yes! Yes!"
Her body convulsed and contorted as my face was showered by her intense orgasm. I kept lapping though, enjoying the sweet juices slicking her thighs and my face.
Slowly, her tremors began to subside as she leaned back onto her elbows on the table.
I stood up over her. "Are you sure you don't want to take that mask off?" I asked, genuinely concerned.
"I," she stammered, still slightly out of breath, "I like it this way."
She shifted forward off the table and stood in front of me.
"And now," she said, trying to regain some of her earlier in-character composure, "I believe you have another service to provide." She reached forward and unbuckled my costume belt, letting it drop to the floor. She then lifted up my shirt slightly and undid my pants. Her fingers grasped the fabric of both my pants and underwear and pulled down, freeing my throbbing and aching cock.
"Excellent." 'Madame Vader' said with a slight nod, "I was right to choose you."
She turned around and bent over the table, resting on her forearms. I took a step forward and lifted the rear loincloth of her costume, exposing a perfectly tanned ass (string bikinis for the win). I adjusted my position, spread her cheeks slightly and guided myself into her soaking wet hole.
Her pussy lips wrapped perfectly around the head of my cock and we stayed in that position for a moment. Then slowly I inched forward until I was completely buried inside her.
"Yes," she hissed softly. I placed my hands on her hips and began slow, rhythmic motions. She was so wet, every thrust was a silky smooth ride. But I could still feel her pussy walls constrict around my shaft every time I moved back and forth. Her body began to match my movements, her ass and pelvis pushing backwards against me.
There was a brief moment when I was extremely tempted to reach forward and attempt to knock the helmet off her head. Would she stop this incredible moment or were we too far gone that she wouldn't care? But the sound of her ass slapping against my lower abdomen shook me out of the thought.
"Fuck it," I think I said out loud as I increased the speed of my thrusts.
"Yes baby," she cried, "Yes, god yes. Come for me baby. Come inside me." Before I could protest, she added, "It's fine. I'm protected. Just come. Come deep inside me, please!"
I continued pumping her pussy until I felt that familiar tingling sensation at the base of my cock.
I started tensing up, "Oh fuck, I'm coming!" I thrust one final time and stayed there as far in her as I could while my sperm erupted from my dick, filling the depths of her pussy.
She gasped, "Oh god, I can feel you filling me up so much!" She wasn't kidding, because just a few seconds later I felt the wonderful mix of her juices and my cum spilling out of her pussy. I took a step back, then pivoted so that I was leaning against the table next to her.
"That was," I gasped, still trying to guess what she looked like under the mask, "insane."
Slowly, she rose off the table, the loincloth slipping back down on its own to cover her bare ass.
"Seriously," I said, watching as she silently stepped over to pick up her cloak and gloves, "please tell me who the hell you are. Or that we can meet up again?"
She made her way to the door and stopped. Her hands slowly made their way up towards her helmet and grasped it on both sides.
And then they dropped back down.
"If you find me," came the ominous voice from under the mask, "then we will see."
She opened the door, where I caught a glimpse of her friend waiting, and slipped out.
The door closed behind her, leaving me in the room in a daze with my pants half way down my legs and my flaccid, wet dick now feeling the chill of the storage room's air conditioning.
Realizing there was no one outside guarding the room anymore, I quickly zipped up, gathered my costume accessories and got the fuck out of the room. I stumbled into the hallway and made my way quickly back to the convention hall. Naturally neither girl was anywhere to be seen in a crowd of other cosplayers and attendees. I made my way out of the convention center, back through to the hotel and came up to my room.
And that's where I am right now. Like I said, I tried calling you. And then I opened my tablet and started writing.
Needless to say I have no clue who won the cosplay contest. Maybe Deadpool/Eleven.
And of course I can hear you saying, "I think I pretty much 'won' anyway!" LOL
But seriously, I have to find her again. There's two more days left to the con.
I'll keep you posted, cuz. Love ya!

Spike: Evil?
I think, at the very root of my disputes about the conventional take on Spike wrt to Spuffy is that a lot of Spuffy shippers (not all, but a lot) seem to have a very narrow definition of ‘evil’ that Spike (without a soul) manages to fall outside of, while my definition of evil is fairly broad and thus easily encapsulates Spike without a soul.
Like, Spuffy shippers - many, not all - will write these lavish, lavish metas about how Spike proves not all Vampires without souls are evil, or he was special in some way because he loved Drusilla, or he cared about Dawn, or liked Joyce, or he was capable of selfless action or variations thereof, and like...
And the whole argument just can’t click with me at all because I cannot grok with an understanding of evil that narrow.
Like, evil doesn’t require 100% selfishness all the time. A Knight Templar type character who will slaughter innocent villagers to achieve their perfect world is evil, even if they would also absolutely sacrifice their life for the cause or someone or something dear to their ideology.
A mass murderer who loves her son and would die rather than let him be hurt is still evil,
The dictator who orders rebel scum to be drawn and quartered then set on fire and fed to pigs but then goes home to his wife and is a perfectly attentive husband and takes care of his elderly parents is still evil.
Evil can have friends, evil can have loved ones, evil can behave selflessly in many contexts, but they can still be evil.
Evil doesn’t require that you be evil 24/7, nor does it require (as I have seen some people argue seriously) some sort of ‘take over the world’-esque scale/scope ambitions.
Whether or not Spike without a soul is evil is a very complicated question. The official canon of the Buffyverse is that he was, and I certainly think the text of the show never stopped making that clear, even with the muddled twist-ending for Spike in that cave in Africa at the end of Season 6 (where they were teasing one thing and then had it be him getting his soul back instead, which reframes it all as him ‘choosing’ his soul, which somehow means he was good all along. Or something.)
And ultimately, this is not to say that people can’t have this take, even if I think it flies really hard in the face of the text as written, but it that conventional reading requires such a narrow definition of evil that I... I just cannot grok with it. At all.

HEY THERE, you have me interested in The Untamed but I'm a little lost as to where to start, there's both a 50 episode normal version and a 20 episode special edition, which should I watch/start with? Also WHAT does your svsss tag stand for? I'm seeing "The Untamed" and "Chén Qíng Lìng" and "Mo Dao Zu Shi" and "Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation" thrown around as synonyms or related pieces of media, but nothing with svsss!
Sure thing!!
Okay, to start with, I’d definitely go with the 50-episode version. It’s a Lot, and there is some padding added to the story compared to the original book, but twenty episodes seems really, really short to do justice to the central plot
(a quick skim of google tells me that the special edition leans harder into the original novel’s gayness, which the show has to be coy about, because china. i think there are expanded scenes featuring the two leads, which is awesome, because their acting is AMAZING, but that just means the plot scenes are even more compressed. I saw at least one person recommend that you not do the special edition unless you’ve consumed the story in at least one other more standard format already)
Also! Iirc, the show is available on youtube and netflix, among other platforms, though those two are wonderfully accessible. However, comma, I do hear from people fluent in chinese that the subtitles sometimes are inaccurate in unnecessary/unfortunate ways. From what I hear, viki has the best complete set of subtitles (I think there may be fansub projects in progress, but I am not at all in touch with those. I still haven’t watched the show myself).
And the general summary of my current webnovel fixation! There’s this webnovel author who goes by mxtx, who currently has three complete books out, which have all been translated into english. Then after I finished those, I started branching out into other authors and webnovels, though I’m not too deep into that end of the pool yet. I’ll break each book into a separate paragraph for clarity.
Oh, and. Each of these books is explicitly gay, and set in ancient fantasy china, in a wuxia/xianxia setting, which I’m not too familiar with myself, but I believe it functions a lot like how authors will use ‘ancient fantasy europe’ as a playground where they don’t necessarily need to match up to established countries/cities/etc, but they expect readers to recognize certain conventions, like I’d be able to recognize a western author writing a basic feudal setting, or recognize witches and wizards, without them explaining the whole thing from the bottom up. Since I’m not familiar, it raised the difficulty level a little for me to get into the genre, but the webnovel translators tend to use footnotes and I picked up a lot as I went on.
(if you are interested in any of these, novelupdates.com is a good central resource collecting links to various fan translation projects)
So! Mxtx. Her earliest book is The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System (SVSSS), which is also the shortest and most linear of her books. The general premise is that a guy who’s been hate-reading this (straight) stallion harem webnovel with a dark protagonist. He goes to bed, and wakes up in the novel, as the protagonist’s dickbag teacher, who is doomed to eventually die horribly. He wants to not die, and is also a decent human being, so the book follows the “original” novel derailing from its intended path, and accidentally getting super duper gay. This one is about to come out in donghua form, but I think that may be its first non-book adaption.
Her second book, which was adapted into The Untamed/Chen Qing Ling (CQL), is also known as The Grandmaster Of Demonic Cultivation/Mo Dao Zu Shi (MDZS), which really manages to be the hardest of her books to summarize. Wei Wuxian, the grandmaster of demonic cultivation, dies. Thirteen years later, he wakes up in someone else’s body. Most of the world would like him to stay dead, tbh, but he’s a good egg, and he and his old friend(????) go forth and solve a necromantic mystery together, and also there is romance-romance and ten million family feelings. This one gets nonlinear, with several extended flashback sequences, and the story STARTS at about the midway point of the plot. This has been adapted into an audio drama at least once, a manhua, a donghua, and now a live action show, so it goes by a million different names in its various formats.
Her third book, and the LONGEST, is Heaven Official’s Blessing/Tian Guan Ci Fu (TGCF), and oh my god, it’s so long, and I love it so, so much. This gets into high fantasy much  more than the other two, including the idea that as people develop their cultivation and powers, they may eventually achieve immortality and ascend to the heavens. The story follows Xie Lian who achieved immortality and ascended to heaven! And then fell. And then ascended! And fell again. Eight hundred years later, he ascends for the third time. He meets Hua Cheng, the ridiculously powerful ghost king, who most of the other immortals are terrified of. But Hua Cheng seems to like Xie Lian! And Xie Lian thinks Hua Cheng is a sweet boy! (hua cheng is a sweet boy, but only for xie lian). This also has extended flashback sequences, but is a more linear story than MDZS, I think. Also it made me cry, which, wow, rude. I love it so incredibly much. This also exists as a manhua, but I think it’s still being published? I haven’t read it yet.
NOW. Mxtx is working on a fourth book, but it’s not out in chinese yet, never mind english. But I needed More. I was getting some SVSSS vibes from this one other book, which, *wobbly hand motions*, but I am enjoying the hell out of this book purely for its own sake.
Meatbun is an author with other books that I haven’t read yet, but I am currently in the middle of The Husky And His White Cat Shizun/Er Ha He Ta De Bai Mo Shi Zun (Erha/2ha), which is at this moment being adapted to a live action tv show called Immortality. There are MANY warnings that go with this book, though the google docs translation files do a good job of placing warnings at the front of every document and in front of relevant chapters. The general premise! Mo Ran basically conquered the entire world, put down all resistance by force, and was a super powerful but Kinda Dumb emperor. As part of this, he took his old teacher, who he despised with a burning passion, prisoner, and abused him a Lot. The story starts as rebels try to mount an assault on his palace, and Mo Ran’s cousin gets impatient with how slowly things are moving and runs ahead of the group. He finds that (suicide warning:) Mo Ran has... taken poison, and is in the middle of dying. This doesn’t stick. He wakes up as a teenager, apparently having traveled back in time, and starts living through events again, with the knowledge of his past life. It took me a while to warm up to this story, but ohhhh my goodness, it’s so TASTY. The translation for this one is ongoing, and I am in AGONY waiting for further updates.
So those are the ones I’m currently into and mostly blogging about! I also read Dreamer In The Spring Boudoir, mostly because feynite wrote an SVSSS fic set in the universe of that novel, which was good in some ways, left me cold in others (and the original novel is straight, with a society with rigid gender roles, so making it super gay in the fic made the setting much more interesting to me). Meatbun has other writing, which I haven’t sampled yet, but I am definitely interested in doing that sometime soon.
Sorry, I know this is a LOT, so if you have any other questions feel free to ask me!! I got into these mostly via being interested in the untamed, so I read them as 1) mdzs, 2) svsss, 3) tgcf, 4) erha, which was an order that worked well for me. But if someone was looking for a general order to read them in, independent of that, I might suggest 1) svsss, 2) mdzs, 3) tgcf, 4) erha. They’re all really good, and scratch different emotional itches, and each of them has at least a few characters who sucker-punch me RIGHT in the goddamn heart. They’ve been a HUGE help for me dealing with the restlessness and/or apathy of quarantine, so I’ve been evangelizing them to pretty much anyone who will listen to me, hahaha

P5R: Rebel Girl (A FeMC Story/P5R Rework) Chapter 7: Rude Awakening
The next morning, Ren was on her way to class when she heard yelling. “LISTEN ASSHOLE!” shouted the distinct voice of Ryuji. Ren went towards the sound of the voice. It turns out she wasn’t the only one, as several students had gathered to watch the scene play out. The scene in question was Ryuji yelling at Kamoshida.
Ryuji continued. “I’m trying to help you here!”
Kamoshida seemed to be sweating bullets, but he regained his composure enough to say “I don’t need help from scum like you. I could have you suspended, even expelled for something like this.”
“Grr” Ryuji growled. “This isn’t about you or me anymore! This is about other people! Why won’t you listen?”
“Alright, I’ll play along,” Kamoshida said. “You want me to stop doing what I’m doing.”
“YES!” Ryuji shouted back.
“Well, what I’m doing is cultivating young talent and pushing them to be the best they could be,” Kamoshida answered. “I’m doing it for the sake of the school. Are you telling me you want the school to fail, Sakamoto?”
Ryuji growled again. “Stubborn to the bitter end, eh?” He stomped his foot on the ground. “There’s no point in hiding it! Everyone knows what you’re doing!”
“Do they, now?” Kamoshida said. He looked around. “It seems you’ve amassed quite an audience. Alright: Public forum time! Whoever knows these things Sakamoto-kun says I’m doing, tell us now.” There was a resounding silence, as there were only three types of audience members. Those who were afraid of Kamoshida, those who were already on Shiho’s side, and Ren. “See? You got nothing!’
“THIS IS BULLSHIT!” Ryuji shouted. “FINE! You don’t want me helping you like this? I can think of plenty of other ways to help!”
“Is that a threat?” Kamoshida said.
“I’M TRYING TO SAVE YOU!” Ryuji yelled back. “Your life is in danger! And you know it too! I saw you at the volleyball rally! But if me trying my hardest not to knock all of your teeth out isn’t going to work, then screw it!” Ryuji stomped off.
Kamoshida had a moment of reflection. He then looked at the crowd and said “WELL?! Get to class!” The crowd dispersed.
At lunch, Ann turned to Ren and said “Hey, I heard Ryuji got into a shouting match with Kamoshida this morning.” Ren nodded. “Do you know what it was about?”
“I was there,” Ren answered.
“Really?!” Ann asked. “What happened?”
“Well, it seems he knows of the threat on Kamoshida’s life, but Kamoshida wouldn’t listen to him,” Ren explained.
“Wait, really?!” Ann said. “Heh.” Tears started to well up.
Ren noticed. “Are you OK?” she asked.
“Huh? Oh yeah” Ann said. “It’s just, I thought for sure he would go with Shiho once she explained what she was doing. I’m just glad he didn’t.”
Ren smiled. “I see.” She crossed her fingers in a Gendo Ikari way. “However, it did appear that he was going to do something drastic. We should probably act soon just to be safe.”
Ann nodded. “Let’s meet after school then.”
Meanwhile, Shiho was spending her lunch gaining more and more converts for the “setting the school on fire” plan. She approached Kasumi. “Hello, Yoshizawa-chan.”
“Oh, hey Suzui-senpai” Kasumi responded. “How are things going?”
Shiho smiled. “Couldn’t be better. Listen, I’m not sure if you know this, but be careful around Kamoshida.”
“Oh” Kasumi said, shocked, and then slightly sad.
Shiho picked up on this. “Oh no. Did something happen?”
“Well, yesterday, he tried to…” Kasumi began explaining. Shiho gritted her teeth. “But Ren-senpai saved me before things got serious.”
“I see,” Shiho said. “Well, how do you feel about getting back at Kamoshida?”
“Huh?” Kasumi said.
Shiho smiled. “Kamoshida is truly irredeemable. So I’m gathering people to help take him down.”
Kasumi was cautious. “Take him down how?”
“We’re going to set fire to the school with him inside it,” Shiho said seriously.
“WHAT?!” Kasumi said. “Th-that’s insane!”
“True, but so is Kamoshida,” Shiho said. “You can’t fight a monster with conventional methods.”
Kasumi glared at her. “‘Whoever fights monsters should see to it that in the process he does not become a monster.’”
“Huh?” Shiho said.
“That’s a quote I learned in class.” Kasumi said. “I forget who said it, but I think it’s true.”
Shiho was taken aback. She then smiled and said “It’s OK. You’re new here. You’ll understand soon enough.” Shiho walked away. Kasumi was worried.
After school, Ren and Ann were preparing to leave for the infiltration when they were stopped by Kasumi. “E-excuse me. Ren-senpai. May I talk with you for a minute?”
Ren looked at Ann. “It’s OK. We’ll meet up later.” Ren nodded. Ann left.
Ren turned back to Kasumi. “What’s up?”
“Um… Oh boy, this is difficult” Kasumi said. “...Is it true that Shiho-senpai is going to try and burn Kamoshida to death?”
Ren was surprised, then solemn. “She told you her plan then, huh?” Kasumi nodded. Ren smirked. “Don’t worry your pretty little head.” Kasumi looked up in awe. “Ann and I have a plan to make sure that doesn’t happen. It’ll be OK. Trust me.” Ren flashed a smile.
Kasumi was even more awestruck. She was blushing ever so slightly. “Well, that’s good to hear,” she said. Ren nodded and walked off.  Once Ren was away, Kasumi started to blush even more. “My heart. It’s jumping out of my chest for some reason. Why am I feeling this way?”
Ren met up with Ann in front of the school. “So, what was that about?” Ann asked.
Ren got serious. “She knows about Shiho’s plan. She was worried, so I had to reassure her.”
Ann was shocked. “Wait! You didn’t tell her about that other world, did you?”
Ren shook her head. “I just told her we were doing something about it.”
“Well, good, I guess…” Ann said. “I don’t know how people would react to that world.”
Ren cocked a grin. “I’m not sure how many people would even believe what we’ve been doing.”
“True,” Ann said. She looked over Ren and saw Ryuji. “Huh?” He was carrying a bag of stuff that looked like weapons. “That can’t be good.”
Ren looked over and saw what Ryuji was doing as well. “We should go before he does something.” She began navigating.
Meanwhile, Ryuji was muttering to himself. “He doesn’t want me to help with words, huh? I’ll show him.” He checked his phone. “Huh? That’s weird. I don’t remember installing this weird eye app on here.” Suddenly, the world morphed around him. “What the?!”
He found himself in the same village that Ren and Ann had traveled back and forth from. “What’s going on?!” He looked around and saw Ren and Ann, but didn’t recognize them because they were in their outfits. “Huh?!”
“Alright, you ready to go steal Kamoshida’s desires, or whatever?” Ann said.
“Of course” Ren replied.
Morgana met up with them. “Are you ready?” Ren nodded. “Good. Then let’s go.” Ren, Ann, and Morgana walked off.
“Was that a talking cat?” Ryuji asked. “Am I feeling OK? How do I check for that?”
“Halt!” said a knight.
“Woh! Wait!” Ryuji said.
“Are you here to attack the King?” the knight asked.
“KING?!” Ryuji asked.
“Hm. I guess you are” the knight said, answering his own question. “Just look at that bag!”
“Huh?” Ryuji said, confused.
“You’re coming with me” the knight said.
“Hold on!” Ryuji shouted as he was getting captured.
As Ren, Ann, and Morgana were walking, Ann asked “So, where is Kamoshida’s desire anyway?”
“It’s located within the heart of the castle,” Morgana answered. “We’re going to have to face a lot of tough opponents and challenges to get it. But I’m sure we can do it, right?” Ann stopped. Morgana and Ren stopped and turned to her. “Right?” Morgana asked.
“Well…” Ann said.
“You did come prepared with gear and medicine, right?” Morgana asked.
“Not...exactly” Ann said.
“WHAT?!” Morgana shouted.
“Well, something happened,” Ren said. “We think someone is going to do something today, so we just kind of jumped in head first.”
“I see…” Morgana said. “Well, in any case, there seems to be no movement on this end. I mean, more and more villagers are joining the resistance, but that seems to be expected. Surprisingly, a few have refused.” Ren smiled. Morgana was shocked. “Wait. Don’t tell me that was your doing?!”
“Well, I’m not sure,” Ren said. “One person said that they declined because of me, but that’s all I know.”
“I see,” Morgana said. “Heh. You really are special.”
“ATTENTION!” a voice rang out. “WE HAVE A VERY SPECIAL PRESENTATION PROVIDED TO YOU BY THE KING! A PUBLIC EXECUTION!”
“Execution?!” Morgana said.
Ann growled. “Come on. Let’s go!” Ann ran towards the announcement. Ren followed behind her.
“Hey! Wait up!” Morgana called as he followed.
The trio arrived to see Ryuji tied to a stake with Shadow Kamoshida there surrounded by guards. “Wait! Those clothes!” Ann said. “Is that the real Ryuji?! How did he get here?!”
“I don’t know,” Morgana said. “You might have brought him in on accident?”
“Well well well” said Kamoshida to the tied up Ryuji. “You were planning on making a threat on my life now, weren’t you?”
Ryuji was struggling. “Huh? No. I just wanted to rough you up a bit! Enough to send you to a hospital or something!”
“So you don’t deny you were going to attack me” Kamoshida said.
Ryuji got pissed. “YOU DIDN’T WANT TO LISTEN TO ME SO THIS WAS MY ONLY CHOICE!”
“Huh? Listen? To YOU?!” Kamoshida said. “Why would I listen to scum like you in the first place?!”
“I’M TRYING TO SAVE YOU, ASSHOLE!” Ryuji shouted back.
“Save me? From the revolution?” Kamoshida said. “Please, it’s not like they can actually do anything.”
“What? Revolution?” Ryuji said, confused.
“No matter,” Kamoshida said. “I’ll deal with them after I deal with you. Let’s see what you brought in your bag of goodies.” Kamoshida began digging through Ryuji’s bag and pulled out an assortment of melee weapons. He then found a gun. “What’s this? So you were going to kill me after all.” He then pointed it at Ryuji. “Well, how ‘bout I just kill you with this then? A fitting end for such lowly scum.”
Ryuji smiled. “Go ahead.”
Ren, Ann, and Morgana were shocked. “RYUJI!” Ann shouted.
“Huh?” Ryuji said. Ren acted quickly. She ran up, jumped, grabbed the gun out of Kamoshida’s hands, and shot one of the knights with it, making them disappear. “HOLY SHIT!” Ryuji shouted.
“Tch. You again” Kamoshida said. “Take care of them!” The knights surrounded Ren. Morgana and Ann came into help. The three of them continued to fight.
“It’s no use,” Morgana said. There’s just too many of them!” Suddenly, the knights began disappearing one by one. “Huh?”
They looked out to see Shiho leading some revolutionaries to attack the knights. “CHARGE!” Shiho commanded. The revolutionaries attacked and overwhelmed the knights.
Ren and Ann looked at each other and nodded. They went to untie Ryuji. Once he was untied, Ryuji demanded “Someone please explain what’s going on here!”
“That’s going to take a while,” Ann said.
“Huh? Takamaki?” Ryuji said. He fell to the ground after being untied. He looked up at Ren. “Wait, and are you that transfer student?”
Meanwhile, Kamoshida was cowering in fear as all of his knights were defeated. “Now,” Shiho said, “it’s time we deal with you!” She rushed to stab Kamoshida with a sabre. Ren rushed between them. Shiho stopped. Kamoshida ran away to his castle.
Shiho glared at her. “He got away.”
“SHIHO!” Ann shouted. “We’re NOT letting you kill him!”
“She’s right,” Ren said.
Shiho was taken aback. “He has no qualms with killing you! Why should we care about him?
“We’re not stooping to his level!” Ann said. “Kamoshida is terrible! No one here can deny that fact! But you… you’re my best friend. I don’t want you to be terrible too…”
Shiho regained her composure. “Sorry Ann. I can’t let him live. Not after everything he’s done.” She looked up. “Before I got this power, I felt hopeless. I wanted to die.” Everyone was shocked. “But now I can make him feel as bad as he makes me feel. And I won’t allow anyone to stop me.”
“BULLSHIT!” Ryuji shouted. Everyone looked at him. “You go on and on about how terrible Kamoshida is, and how he makes you feel? You’re not special! Kamoshida took EVERYTHING from me. Of course there were points when I wanted to just die! But I’m not giving that bastard the satisfaction.” He continued. “You keep saying there’s no other way. You may be right for all I know. But I don’t want you to do that! If it’s something dirty, just leave it to me! I’m already the lowest of the low. I’m not letting you come down here with me! Not while you can still make something of yourself! Not while you still have a chance!”
A powerful looking night came by, along with some support. “Quit disturbing the peace!”
“NO!” Ryuji shouted. “Not until Kamoshida stops disturbing ours!”
“Very well then” the knight said. “Looks like that execution will be taking place after all.” They began to attack.
“You say that now, but soon Kamoshida will be executed!” Shiho shouted.
“HELL NO!” Ryuji shouted. “DAMMIT!”
“You made me wait quite a while” a voice in Ryuji’s head. He began to struggle some more. “You seek power, correct? Then let us form a pact. Since your name has been disgraced already, why not hoist the flag and wreak havoc? The ‘other you’ who exists within desires it thus.”
“Yes” Ryuji said, a mask forming on his face.
“I am thou, thou art I...There is no turning back...The skull of rebellion is your flag henceforth!”
Ryuji ripped off his mask, causing blood to flow down his face. “CAPTAIN KIDD!” After a burst of energy, Ryuji was now wearing a black dress shirt and black pants, with a skeletal structure on his shirt, elbow pads, knee pads, a red ascot, and bright yellow gloves. Behind him was his Persona, Captain Kidd. Everyone was in awe. “Alright, let’s take them down!” Ryuji and Captain Kidd dealt with the powerful shadow. Ren, Ann, and Morgana took out the other ones that they had brought along.
“Hell yeah!” Ryuji said. He pointed at Shiho. “And now YOU!”
Ren, Ann, and Morgana were distressed. “Ryuji wait!” Ann called out.
“Huh?” Ryuji said. Shiho ran away. Ryuji collapsed again.
“RYUJI!” Ann called out.
“Let’s get him out of here,” Morgana said.
Ren nodded. “Why don’t you come too?” she asked.
“Good idea,” Morgana said. He looked at Ryuji’s bag. “We should take that with us as well.” The four of them returned to the real world.
They hid in an alley right outside the school. “Ryuji, are you OK?” Ann asked.
Ryuji groaned a little bit. “Yeah. I think so” he answered. “I’m really tired though.”
“As to be expected when one first awakens to their Persona” Morgana said. Ren and Ann looked down to see an actual black cat instead of the form Morgana took in the Metaverse.
Ryuji looked at him too. “Um, why is that cat talking?”
“Well… how should we explain this?” Ann asked.
“Let’s just go over everything we know,” Ren said. “It might be easier once he knows the whole story.”
“Agreed,” Ann said. “Though, even I’m having trouble grasping some of the concepts.”
Ann, Ren, and Morgana did their best to explain what was going on to Ryuji. “Slow down,” Ryuji said. “So, basically, that was another world? And it’s being manipulated by Kamoshida and Suzui? And Suzui is being helped by some mysterious force?”
“Basically…” Ann said.
“And we can make sure that Suzui doesn’t kill Kamoshida AND make Kamoshida confess to all the shit he’s done?”
“Right,” Ren said.
“Heh” Ryuji said. “Count me in!” Everyone was surprised. “I mean, I don’t get everything about what’s going on, but all of it sounds good, right?”
“Right,” Morgana said.
Ryuji looked at him. “By the way, how are you talking?”
“Yeah, I’ve been wondering that myself” Ann said.
Morgana groaned. “It’s kind of hard to explain. But basically, since you can hear me talk in that other world, you can hear me talk in this one too.”
“Oh. I think I get it” Ann said.
“OK. So, what about the gun?” Ryuji asked.
“Oh yeah. You brought a gun with you” Ren said. “Are you sure you weren’t going to kill Kamoshida?”
“OF COURSE I WASN’T” Ryuji said. “It’s a model gun! A fake! But it looked real, so I thought Kamoshida might be intimidated by it.”
“That would explain it!” Morgana said. The three humans looked at him. “Since the world is a cognitive one, they thought it was a real gun. And since they thought that, it became real.”
“Holy shit” Ryuji said.
“That sounds kind of dangerous,” Ann said.
“True, but if we had other weapons like that, we’d have a good advantage going in,” Ren said.
“Couldn’t have said it better myself” Morgana said. “It’d be great if we could get some stuff to recharge us there as well.” The gang nodded.
“So, our plan is as follows:” Ren said. “Gather up supplies, and then once we do, take care of this Palace thing before the meeting.”
“Right!” everyone else said.
“By the way, what are we going to do about this one?” Ann asked, looking at Morgana.
“I can’t take him in,” Ryuji said.
“Um, if it’s all the same to you, I’d like to go with Ren” Morgana said. “After all, I was created to guide her.”
“Oh, um, sure,” Ren said.
“Then it’s settled,” Morgana said. “Um, can I ride in your bag?”
“Oh, um, sure” Ren repeated. She lowered her bag so that Morgana could hop in. Once she readjusted herself, she looked at Ann and Ryuji and said “Alright! I’ll contact you both when we’re ready to get this train a rollin’!”
“Oh, uh, shouldn’t we get each other’s contact information” Ryuji said, nervously.
“Smooth,” Ann said. “But you’re right.” The three of them exchanged numbers. “And done!”
“Alright, I’ll be waiting!” Ryuji said. “But man, am I in the mood for some meat right now. I’m going to go head home. Seeya!” Ryuji left.
“We should probably leave as well,” Ann said. Ren nodded, and the two of them started walking to the station. Ann seemed hesitant about something. “Um, Ren?” She looked at Ann. “What do you think about Ryuji?”
Ren smiled. “He’s a bit hot-headed, but I think he’s a good person under it all.”
Ann smirked. “Yeah. He is.” She looked distant again. “But that’s not what I meant.”
“Then how do you mean?” Ren asked.
Ann shook her head. “Never mind,” she said.
“Well, I’m here if you need me,” Ren said.
Ann looked at Ren. “Thanks.” They arrived at the station and went their separate ways.
Ren walked in to see a blue-haired goth-punk woman sitting at one of the booths. “Hi there,” she said.
“Hello yourself” the blue-haired woman replied. “What are you doing here so late? I didn’t think this was the kind of place teenagers hung out at at night?”
“Well, uh…” Ren spouted.
Sojiro walked out of the kitchen and saw what’s going on. “Hey! No talking to the customers!” he said sternly. “Sorry if she bothered you, doctor?”
The apparent doctor smiled. “It’s fine. It seems I might have bothered her more. Well, I’ll be going now.” She left Leblanc.
Sojiro sighed. Ren looked over. “Am I that much of a bother to you?”
Sojiro was surprised. “No. I agreed to take you in. I should take more responsibility. Just get upstairs.”
Ren walked up the stairs and let Morgana out. “Hey, did you hear?” he asked.
“Which part?” Ren asked.
“That lady was a doctor,” Morgana said. “Maybe we can get some medicine from her!”
Ren smiled. “You’re right. She seems to be close by, so let’s look around tomorrow.”
“What’s all this racket?” Sojiro said, coming up. He was shocked. “A cat?! Grrrr. This a restaurant. Animals are a no go.” He thought about it. “Then again, if you had something like this to focus on, you might stay out of trouble. Just be careful.”
“I will,” Ren said. “He’s smarter than he looks.”
“Where'd you even get this guy anyway?” Sojiro asked.
“I found him wandering around,” Ren answered. “He seemed lonely, so I helped him out, and now he’s taken quite a liking to me.”
“Hm. Well, I guess cats don’t see things like arrest records” Sojiro said. “Have you, uh, decided on a name?”
Ren smiled. “Morgana.”
“Morgana huh” Sojiro said.
“You sound disappointed,” Ren replied.
“Well, I was kind of hoping I could name it,” he admitted. “Hold on.” He went back downstairs.
Morgana seemed confused. “This was the guy you were telling me about on the way back, huh? It’s weird. He places up here in a dingy attic, but he also appears to have a soft side to him, huh.”
“Yeah, he’s a hard one to pin down,” Ren said. “But it wouldn’t be fun if it were so easy.”
Sojiro walked back up with a plate with some leftover food. “Here” He set it down for Morgana.
“Wow,” Morgana said. He started going to town on it.
“Heh” Sojiro said. “What a talkative little guy.” He looked at Ren. “Make sure he doesn’t speak up during business hours.”
“Got it,” Ren said.
“Oh, and wash that plate once he’s done,” Sojiro said. “I’m going to go close up, so you’ll have the opportunity to do so.”
“You never miss a beat, do you Sojiro?” Ren said, smiling. Sojiro was taken aback. He then smiled, and headed out.
Once Morgana was done, Ren went and cleaned the plate. When she got back up there, Morgana was excited. “Alright, now that that’s settled, it’s time I help you prepare one more thing.”
“What’s that?” Ren asked.
“Infiltration tools” Morgana said. “Here, let’s use this desk.” Ren looked at the desk across from her bed. She cleared it off and sat down. “Alright, let’s begin.” Morgana instructed Ren about making tools. Ren seemed to get the hang of it, but even then she wasn’t great at it. “It’s OK. Not everyone is great at things their first time.”
Once Ren finished crafting a few things, Morgana complimented her. “Great work.”
“Thanks,” Ren replied. “By the way, why come here?” she asked. “I know you were created to help me, but...
“Wel…” Morgana said. “To be completely honest, I was hoping you would help me out too.” Ren was curious. “See, while I was made to guide you, what I was to guide you to has changed drastically. I don’t know what I’m supposed to be anymore. I feel listless. So I thought, maybe, you could help me find my place too.”
Ren smiled. “It’s OK, kitty” She hugged him and scratched his chin. “I’m trying to find my place now too. But I can help you.” Morgana fussed. Ren stopped. “Too much?”
“No. It was just a bit sudden is all” he replied. He sighed. “I guess I’m a cat to most people, but I know I’m more than that. So why am I still a cat? If things have changed, why couldn’t I have been a human?”
“Do you not like being a cat?” Ren asked.
“Well, it’s not so bad…” Morgana said. “I just need to think things through.”
Ren smiled. “Well, you’ve been so helpful in the metaverse, I guess I can help you sort this out.”
Morgana smirked. “It’s a deal!”
I am thou... Thou art I… Thou hast acquired a new vow...
It shall become the wings of rebellion that breaketh thy chains of captivity.
With the birth of the Magician Persona I have obtained the winds of blessing that shall lead to freedom and new power.
“Well, we should go to sleep. We’ve got some work we gotta do tomorrow!” Morgana said.
“Right,” Ren said. There was a silence. “Um, if you don’t mind, could you not look as I get changed?”
“Of course” Morgana said. “After all, I am a true gentleman.” He looked away as Ren changed into her nightwear. The two of them then placed themselves on the bed and fell asleep.

The Untamed and MDZS appreciation and recommendation post
Okay so fair warning to my small amount of followers, this blog will probably be full of MXTX contents starting from now, because I’ve fallen into MXTX’s hell and I don’t see myself climbing out any time soon.
I’m not even kidding in the span of three months, I’ve watched CQL (like 4 times), watched the special edition, watch the MDZS donghua, read the novel, read the manhua, read a fair amount of fics, discovered the SVSSS’s characters through a few crossover fanfics, started to read SVSSS, then TGCF (as well as their respective manhua up to the last translated chapters) and well generally immersed myself into the fandoms. And I LOVE it! And I have so, so many feelings and thoughts about the characters, the plots, the relationships, everything, that I don’t even know where to start!
Okay so for those who don’t know what the hell I’ve talking about. MXTX stands for Mò Xiāng Tóng Xiù who is the author of three amazing novels: Mo Dao Zu Shi (MDZS) [also called Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation], The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System (SVSSS) and Tian Guan Ci Fu (TGCF) [Heaven Official’s Blessing]. The Untamed or Chen Qing Ling (CQL) is the chinese drama adaptation of her most well known (as of now) novel MDZS.
I am going to talk about CQL/The Untamed and MDZS (novel version) in this post... But it will probably be followed by posts about TGCF and SVSSS too.
I’ve tried to be pretty vague on several points so that should keep the spoilers at minimum, in case you didn’t watch CQL yet.
[More under the cut]
Okay so as someone of Asian descent who was born and raised in an European country and spent her formative years watching wuxia and xianxia, The Untamed/CQL is the kind of representation that I really didn’t know I needed and I am so, so glad that I gave it a chance. (Big, big thanks to @shit-happens-bitchachos for reblogging so much CQL contents that the frequent presence of it on my dash got me curious  enough to start watching it).
Watching The Untamed for the first time feels like coming back to a home that you once thought would be frigid but actually became very warm and welcoming without you noticing because you have been away for so long. And it feels both nostalgic and new, in the best possible way. It’s a wonderful feeling, really.
Where to find it?
You can watch the drama english sub version on Netflix, Viki or Youtube, just typed “The Untamed” and you should find the episodes easily.
To be honest, though I am very thankful for the existence of such platform, I have a slight [read huge] dislike of Netflix’s choice of translation for any Asian movie/tv shows. I mean I’m not going to go off on a debate about official translation vs fan translation, nor westernization and how doing so not only take off a huge layer of subtle/or not so subtle communication but also participate to erase part of the culture. [Because I have opinions about this and I am still very much so cringing about all the “Yanli”s, it is really not the point I’m trying to make right now. ]
So out of the three version, I’d lean more on the Viki version. To be clear though this choice isn’t based on the accuracy of the translation, but strictly on the choice of naming and title convention.
As for the novel, you can find  here a complete english translation made by the Exiled Rebels Scanlations group.

The plot
I’m not going to go into detail about the plot, because I’m sure a lot of people out there managed to do so in a way more articulate way that I ever could.
So basically CQL is about Wei Wuxian, aka the Yiling Patriarch. The Yiling Patriarch is like this huge urban legend that everyone warns their children about, except he actually existed. Why such a reputation? Well, in a Cultivation society where people used spiritual energy to fight and exorcise creatures full of resentful energy (such as ghost, ghouls and other things), the Yiling Patriarch is actually the guy who decided that he was going to use resentful energy to fight resentful energy. What he is doing is called “demonic cultivation” and if you want a western equivalent it would be quite close to using necromancy. And if you want an idea of how blasphemous such method of cultivation is deemed, it would be the equivalent of going to a Christian exorcist organization and yelling loud and clear to all the people there that you’re gonna desecrate the tombs of all holy people and use their corpses to fight ghost and other dark creatures.
So the legend/story of the Yiling Patriarch goes as follow: The Yiling Patriarch and his army of corpses were actually quite useful to turn over the tide of a war that shook the foundations of the Cultivation World, annihilating the strongest Sect of the five Great Cultivation Sects (that lorded over the cultivation society). But some time afterwards the Yiling Patriarch revealed his true colors, and killed more than 3000 cultivators (among them his elder sister and her husband - orphaning their one month old son) before finally ended up being killed by his own little brother.
And now sixteen (or thirteen in the novel) years later, Wei Wuxian’s soul got called back because of a dark ritual. The ritual involved giving up their own soul and offering their body to summon up the soul of a dead, evil, person. The soul summoned would have to accomplish the task the summoner wished for, or the soul would be forever destroyed without being able to ever reincarnate. And so, Wei Wuxian woke up in the body of Mo Xuanyu, a young man who was abused by his family and wished for revenge. While trying to work out what he is supposed to do, Wei Wuxian quickly realized that the Mo family is actually being targeted by fierce corpses that are acting way more aggressively than they should. Turns out that it was because of a possessed spirit sword [a cut out arm in the novel].
Afterwards he encounters Lan Wangji, an esteemed cultivator, one of the strongest of his generation, coming from one of the most righteous Cultivation Sect. And the thing is, Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji appear to have quite a complicated history that dates back to their teenage years. And CQL/MDZS is not only about how they decided to investigate the mystery of the possessed sword/arm (which ended up digging up a lot of secrets and conspiracy ), but also about Wei Wuxian’s past, starting from when he was 15 and meeting Lan Wangji for the first time.
The few things that you’re probably going to feel/think while watching the few first episodes
Confusion I think I’m not even kidding when I say you’re supposed to be in a state of perpetual confusion for the first two episodes... There’s this huge info dump, in the first five minutes of episode 1, then you’ll have to navigate this new world feeling as confused as dead-for-sixteen years Wei Wuxian... You’ll meet dozens of characters and if you can’t remember their names or who they are it’s normal don’t worry. Each character has a birth name (Wei Ying, Lan Zhan) and a courtesy name that (Wuxian, Wangji)... And so if you see Wei Ying or Wei Wuxian just know that it refers to the same person. And to complicate things further some characters also have a title (Yiling Patriarch, Hanguang-Jun)  other people might use to refer to them. So really, if you want to understand what is going on, you might want to note the name, title and relationship down... But it’s kinda tedious?  I promise it is unnecessary as those characters will all be introduced properly in the flash-back starting at the end of episode 2, and you’ll fully be able to get used to them and keep track of them. Of course, if you managed to remember a few names, once the character is being introduced in the past, you’ll get a “ Oh so at some point, this is going to happen to them” sort foreshadowing/foreknowledge, which is neat, I guess. [I recommend going back to watch the first two episodes, once the flash-back is over, to fully grasp what was going on there].
What the hell am I even watching? Okay so this one might only just be me but I was pretty hooked by the story by episode 3... and then I reached episode 8 and 9 and I kid you not, I went “Oh boy... that’s.... yeah okay... *cover face with hands*”... So I was cringing pretty hard for those two episodes out of second-hand embarrassment at the extras actors acting level... Like woah... It was supposed to be scary and threatening and all but I couldn’t just take them seriously? (You’ll know what I’m talking about when you get there)... That with some plot points made me seriously consider stopping right there.... But thankfully I didn’t. So you really just need to pass the first two episodes [which are really good] and cringe your way through the two most abyssal episodes in the show (in my opinion) and everything will go smoothly afterwards.  Though to be fair, it might be explained by the fact that no one expected that CQL would have the highest number of reviews of Chinese drama, nor that it would be the highest earning drama of 2019 and certainly not that it would accumulate 8 billions views on Tennent by May 2020. Where am I going with this?  Well it was certainly no Game of thrones in terms of budget... That’s what I’m trying to say. It had a low budget production... and well in a fantasy world where everyone and their grandma use supernatural power to fight each other and demonic creatures, special effects are a must. Choices had had to be made [and while I am very thankful for the aspects they decided to use the money on] the special effects were very touch and go.
Okay but are they going to be together or is this another case of queerbaiting? So if what you’re asking is “will we ever get a kiss, a love confession or definite proof of their relationship?”. The very short answer is “No.” You’ll never see any of those on screen for the very simple and good reason that there are censorship laws in China regarding queer relationship on screen. “So it’s basically queerbaiting?” Again no. CQL was adapted from a BL chinese novel. In the novel there is absolutely no room for doubts that they are together. But because of the censorship the producer teams had to remove all definite and obvious proof of romance, but it also means that they had to be creative and anything in the subtext or subtle areas was a go. Like really they crammed more homoerotic text (like at this point is this even subtext) in the show than in all other kinds of adaptations (including the novel, where we get kissing, sex and eloping). It got the point that contrarily to the novel, donghua and manhua where the whole Cultivation world thought Lan Wangji hated Wei Wuxian and that they couldn’t stand each other,in the show everybody and their dogs knew that the two were very close.  Also, while I absolutely hate that those censor law exist and am very disappointed that such homophobic mentality still exist and that we won’t get a full adaptation and explicit of their love story, I must say that because of this my demisexual ass absolutely love the depiction of their love in the show. I mean, when you don’t have the “easy way out” of kissing and sex and so all to show that they is definitively romance material going on here... You have to get creative, you have to convey it with all other gestures... touching, gazing at each other and so on... And it creates such a soft but intense  and intimate environment around them...By the way I’m not trying to negate their sexual relationship in the novel (#LetWangxianFreelyExpressTheirSexualLives)... I’m just saying that I’m not sure the producing teams would have gotten to such a length in the show if they could just have adapted the explicit romance scenes. Now if somehow they’d had managed to keep the same level of intense subtext and be able to adapt the romance scenes too, that would have been the best, but well...
The reasons you should still absolutely watch/read it?
The plot
The way all those character journeys and stories are interwoven in such a cohesive picture is nothing short of amazing. And the way that Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji unravel events that happened more than a decade ago piece by piece [or rather body part by body part] is so very well done. And of course half way through, you think that you’ve got the full pictures, and you’re sort of gloating all the while because you see it coming from miles away and how can the cast be that stupid... And well you are not wrong. Watch out for the canary though.   The show chose to move a few things in term of timeline (character appearing and events happening way before they were supposed to... )... They also added a few original plot points in the past.... So as a results it feels slightly less cohesive and coherent than in the novel. Anyway I won’t go into details here because I’ve got this super long post planned where I’d detailed all the differences between the novel and the show and why some things worked in my opinion but not other. CQL and MDZS are what a properly balanced plot-driven and character-driven show/novel look like.
The relationships
Of course, Wangxian (Wei Wuxian/Lan Wangji) should absolutely be mentioned. Because throughout the story in the past, you watch as young, wild, ingenious, thinking-out-of-box Wei Wuxian meet an equally young seemingly inflexible, impassive, following 3000+ rules in his daily lives Lan Wangji, you watch how their personality clashes before finally acknowledging each other skills, you watch how they hurt during the war, how quickly they had to grew up, you watch how one of them had to watch the other walking down a quickly crumbling path, being alienated by the world without being able to help, you watch how they lost each other, before finally finding each other again after sixteen/thirteen years. And then you can finally watch how soft they are with each other, how in-sync they are, the trust, the devotion, the willingness to stand by each other against the whole fucking world. And as I already mentioned before, because of the censure law in China, you’ll never can’t and will never get to see Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian say “I love you” to each other on the show. It still manages to convey “I love you” in every other possible way without having them actually say the words. I mean at this point it can’t even be considered subtext... It’s plain text written in bold underlined font that can be read in every single one of their interactions, and sometimes even when the other isn't even there, [It's basically subtitles! Hah! Okay getting out of there].
It helps that the chemistry between the two actors is absolutely mind-blowing. And the acting is nothing short of amazing. If you’ve been in the spn fandom then you might know that Jensen is king of the micro-expressions ... well I’m afraid that he has been dethroned by Wang Yibo (Lan Wangji’s actor) in my mind.
But really, wangxian is not the only relationship worth mentioning in CQL/MDZS. One of the other huge highlight in my opinion is the several siblings dynamics. There are about seven sets of siblings among the whole cast and because shitty, shittier and shittiest parents were apparently the norm for their generation, we get to see the trope of “eldest child basically raised their younger siblings” in five different flavors. Of course the main focus is on Wei Wuxian and his siblings, but it doesn’t mean that you can’t see the sheer care and protectiveness oozing out of the other four sets of siblings. As someone who loves family bonding (and especially found families), I really appreciate the fact that among those sets of siblings, there are some that are related by blood, some who are half-siblings and some who are not related biologically but consider themselves siblings regardless. And while all their relationships are different - because they are different people - they all do share the same love for their siblings.  “How far are you willing to go for your siblings?” “How much are you ready to sacrifice for them?” The show answers those two questions in various all throughout the story in a more or less oblique way, and right there lies the motivation behind a lot of the characters’ actions, good or bad. Their relationship with their siblings is actually one of the major driving force of the characters (Wei Wuxian among them). And I love it, because it shows that love comes in a many, many forms.
  The overarching themes
“What’s right, what’s wrong? Who’s good, who’s evil? Who’s strong, who’s weak?”
In such an elitist society who will judge you at the drop of a hat (especially if you have the bad taste of coming from a more unfortunate lineage), how can you define the difference between “right” and “wrong”? Wherein the midst and the aftermath of a blood thirsty war, the distinction between “good” and “evil” more often than only lies on where you were born and/or your family name rather than where you actually stood or what you did in the war. This right here is the very huge underlying theme that is being woven throughout the show/novel. Not only are we, the viewer/reader, invited to think/judge for ourselves based on the actions of the characters... But our main character, Wei Wuxian verbalizes those doubts and questions explicitly a few times and implicitly in the stand and choices that he decided to take. And due to Wei Wuxian’s influence, Lan Wangji who is used to follow his 3000+ rules on a daily life basis without ever questioning them, starts to do so. (“Do not befriend evil.”, “Be righteous.” )  What does it mean to be righteous? Must the notion of righteousness always align with general opinion? How do you define the ‘evil’ that you are not supposed to befriend? Is my definition the same as yours? Is my definition the same as the rest of the world? And if it is not the case, does it necessarily means that I’m in the wrong?  And the very obvious answer to those questions is “No, there is no visible line between ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, ‘good’ or ‘evil’... Nor is there any universally agreed on way to act in order to fit in one category or the other...” And this answer is illustrated in all the ways those numerous characters are depicted: their love, their hatred, their fear, their pain, their joys, their tears, their motivations, their frustrations, their shortcomings, their hidden or not so hidden agenda, their flaws... All of them are depicted in such an awesome and wholesome human way.  They are not fully good or fully bad, they are human, with all that it entails... Main characters and main villains included (or rather, I’d say especially them) [Though the show tended smooth and cover this aspect a little bit more than the novel in my opinion]
“Don't you understand? When you’re standing on their side, you’re the bizarre genius, the miraculous hero, the force of the rebellion, the flower that blooms alone. But the second your voice differs from theirs, you’ve lost your mind, you’ve ignored morality, you’ve walked the crooked path.” (Jiang Cheng)
Another theme that is strongly address here is the matter of “Public Opinion”. Despite (or rather because of) how fickle it is, public opinion, rumors (no matter how unfounded) could so easily ruins your reputation, your standing. And if you loose their favors than all your previous actions (no matter how praised it had been in the past) would be seen with a blackened lens. I remember feeling as frustrated as Wei Wuxian at the lack of logic, the rhetoric employed and the sheer hypocrisy that had been portrayed by the mass. I think that there is one character that can be easily recognized as the pure personification of “Public Opinion”, he is without a doubt meant to be the “voice of the mass, of the bystanders whose opinions shouldn’t really matter but actually does a lot”. I won’t tell who it is, it’s pretty obvious if you watch the show... And I think that we are meant to feel annoyed at such characters. I think we are meant to be as frustrated as that one character who at a mass gathering tried to make a stand, tried to do the right thing, but was quickly shut down with dubious rhetoric and blatant disregard because their voice didn’t carry enough power. And last but not least, the show/novel broaches the issue of how social standing is considered very, very much dependent on your circumstance of birth. Like I said before the cultivation world in CQL/MDZS is inherently elitist. In order to be able to cultivate you must learn the proper techniques and at a quite young age. But it is not something that you could do on your own unless you’re some kind of genius or prodigy. Which means that you must attract the attention of a nearby sects or begs them to take you in as a disciple. It means though that you’ll probably start a little later than the disciples that were born directly within the sect [inner disciples], meaning you’ll probably end being weaker. However even if by some truly dedication and perseverance you manage to the same level as the inner disciples, you’ll still only be seen as an outer disciples, nothing more than cannon fodder in the eyes of society. In all the major sects, there is a distinctive mark, objects that only disciples coming from the sect family line are allowed to carry, as an irrevocable sign of their high standing in society and their inherent privileges. There are some exceptional circumstances though where someone of low birth status might reach this elitist sphere. But no matter how high they reach, how outstanding they are, in some way they will always be reminded (sometimes behind their backs, sometimes subtly, sometimes right in their face) of the stigma of their birth. There are three characters in particular, whose journeys mirror and foil each other a lot.   And I think it is very interesting to see this “son of a prostitute” or “son of a servant” or “street rat” or “bastard” advanced through society. They all received very different upbringings, despite all starting more or less at a low point. And I liked that the way they decided to live later on and how they tackle/handle the cultivation world  is very much reflected and influenced by their upbringings rather than the circumstances of their birth. It brings up this very strong message that, if they are the way they are it is not because of who their parents are, but rather how the people around them reacted to them. The way they are right now is not the fruit of their birth but a direct consequences of the rejection/acceptance of society. And so when you look at them, you can’t help but see their journeys as a three forking road paths reflecting the other like twisted mirrors. You look at their actions now, then back their different circumstances and you can’t help but think “Ah, that is what might happened if things were different.” [There is a reason that canon-divergence and time travel fix-it are my favorite tropes... my bias is really showing here... haha] And it really, really hammers on the importance of kindness in the face of misery and discrimination. Kindness  and acceptance at the right moment, no matter how small can change everything. Sometimes, something even as small as a candy.
The movie sets and props So I mentioned before that the budget of CQL really wasn’t that high and they had to make choices. And I could only applaud their choices, because really, wah! Just look at the main sects locations, the scenery, the backgrounds. It’s so beautiful!! [Had I had any gifing talent I would have included them so that you could get the full mind-blowing experience... so I’ll just send you to @gusucloud blog, where all the gifs and edits are amazing, (Cloud Recesses here and Lotus Pier here) and in this post  have my lame-ass screenshots instead.]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The fine details, the workmanship in most of the props in the background, the swords!!! *Incoherent flailing*
[I didn’t manage to get any close-up of the swords... but believe me, they are piece of arts!]
The music
The soundtrack of the show is absolutely amazing and beautiful.
You know how in movies and tv shows couples always seem to have “a song”... like “Oh! Look our song is playing!”... Weeeeeell...
Wangxian do too and it’s literally their song, as in their actors are singing it. You can of course hear it in the ending, but... but! I think the way it was used within the episode was very striking. It’s one of the many ways the producer teams managed to convey the romantic aspect of their relationship. And it was very well done.
Wuji, by Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo
Wuji, instrumental piano + flute + Zither version
Just imagine, dude just resurrected from his 16 years of deadness and you see him moping at night by playing this beautiful tune with a freaking leaf... just because he saw some cultivators wearing the same uniform as Lan Wangji... So at this point you know that this song might means something but well, you don’t really get it...
The second time you hear this tune, we are on a mountain, and it’s through a bamboo flute that Wei Wuxian used to appease and calm down an agitated corpse [who he apparently knows]... He is luring ‘it’ out to a safe place, so he is playing the song while slowly moving back one step at a time. Then his back suddenly bumps into someone... This person catches his hand. The flute playing abruptly stops and the full instrumental version with piano+flute is suddenly blaring out in the background. And then it’s as if the whole world stops as they gaze at each other, while the music keeps playing. And really, you might fully understand the weight of their gazes, or their history, but you know that it’s there... That’s the moment where you look at them looking at each other, grasping at each other wrist, where you can still hear their song in the background... and can only go “Oh. Oh.”  [Then of course a purple ball of pure anger just had to come and interrupt them. Excuse you, they were quickly having a moment there. Kidding aside, It was such a nice scene, it’s hand down one of my favorite scene of the whole show, and the music played a really huge part in my opinion.]
And if it wasn’t enough to hammer it down. The third times will definitively do it. So both of them are fifteen years and meet each other for the first time, when Wei Wuxian goes to study at Lan Wangji’s sect. Of course there first impression of each other is disastrous, what’s with Wei Wuxian insisting to come inside despite having lost his invitation and Lan Wangji clearly stating that no one is allowed without invitation. Of course it doesn’t help that after running back to fetch his lost invitation, Wei Wuxian snuck in after curfew (breaking a protective ward on his way), while smuggling two jar of alcohol. All of the above are forbidden in Cloud Recess, by the way. So our boy just casually broke three rules and then who catch him, right when he is climbing over the wall? Lan Wangji, who’s on patrol, of course. [Like I said, disastrous first impression]...And so after frostily listing all the rules Wei Wuxian broke not even five minutes in , Lan Wangji tries to bring Wei Wuxian to be disciplined. Wei Wuxian, of fucking course, resists. And the two proceed to fight (sword and all).
Cue their song playing as they cross swords on the rooftop of Cloud recesses, under the light of a full moon night.
If that is not a meet-cute I don’t know what it is.
Anyway this song is played many, many more times in the show and I’m not talking about them because I don’t want to spoil anyone.
Also as an aside, they don’t appear in the show... But there are character songs that have been recorded. Some of them sung by the actual actors and other not. And while all of them are really good, if there is absolutely one that you must listen to, it’s “Bu Wang” by Wang Yibo the actor of Lan Wangji.  Make sure to watch the official MV only after watching the whole show (because it’s spoilery) and to activate the cc for the lyrics translation. It’s such a beautiful and painful song; and a very insightful reflection of Lan Wangji’s character.  I love it.
Lan Sizhui and A-Yuan
No argument or explanation needed, you’ll see when you get there. I dare you not to like those small fluffy cinnamon rolls!
The Junior Quartet
Okay those ducklings deserve a whole sub-section on their own. Not only because they are all amazing kids but because of what they represent.
What is really great here is that since the story takes place over the span of 16/13 years, you get to see three different generations at various stage of their development. In the past you get to see the parents generation at their sum-up while there child, the following generation [Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji etc] from their teenage years to young adulthood. Then in the present you see the teenagers reaching the age their parents were (more or less, probably slightly younger) and the next generation (the ducklings) about the same age as Wei Wuxian’s generation were at the beginning. And the juxtaposition between the two pictures is just so, so very telling because the differences are glaring.
I’m going to borrow the words from qrbat who wrote this wonderful fanfiction, “tell some storm” on ao3.
The parents generation was a generation of Pride and Greed, it was a generation that lauded standing your ground no matter what and refusing outsider help. They were the generation which raised their children as a “generation of War”. A war that they started and that their children, teenagers, had to fight and end for them. And in comparison the junior generation seems so unexperienced so soft... and that’s a good thing, because it means that those children hadn’t had to experience the hardship of war, hadn’t had to grow up so fast because they basically didn’t have any decent parental figures to help them. Instead of perpetuating the cycle of hate and war started by their elders, the generation of War raised the next generation as a generation of peace, as a “generation of Love” and acceptance.
And it is amazing because the juniors, simply by being who they are, are embodying  this  message from Wei Wuxian’s generations to their parents “See? This is what it means to parent. I had to sacrifice my childhood and innocence to fight your war and I still managed to raise such amazing and kind children, what was your freaking excuse? I will not be like you. Times are changing and they are changing for the better.”
.
.
*Look at length of the post* *snort* Right. Okay, would you believe me, if I told you that in the beginning this post was supposed to be an appreciation post for all three of MXTX’s works and not just MDZS because I was afraid it would be too short? Yup so turned out I had a lot more things to say than I thought.  Please feel free to react or just message me about anything MXTX’s fandom related... I am desperately in need of friends to discuss with about MXTX’s stuff!

She Was My Hope  Chapter 8
Tumblr media
Cassian Andor x OC
Words: 1520
Series Masterlist
Summary: Reina’s new discovery leads her to make a grave mistake.
Notes: I know, I know, I’m a bad fanfic parent. Picking this story back up has made me so happy and I really hope you guys enjoy it.
-
The two men took off running but Reina stood her ground. Nira smirked and raised her blaster.
“Reina!” Cassian cried, turning back. Han grabbed his arm.
“Wait.” They watched as Reina slowly raised the lightsaber as a confident smile spread across her face. Nira’s men rushed towards her, each struck down faster than the one before. Chewie and K2 rushed off to prepare the ships for escape as Han and Cassian watched Reina in awe. The ship jerked, being pulled into the grasp of an Empire ship and Nira laughed.
“There’s nowhere to run, rebel scum.” Nira’s eyes shot down to Reina’s shoulder, seeing the brand masked under her tattoo. “Or should I say, slave scum?” Reina felt the rage coursing through her. She raised her hand, picturing Nira flying back into her gang of goons. But nothing happened. She used every bit of anger she had and still, Nira stood with a sneer on her face.
“Too easy.” She snickered maliciously. Nira smiled cruelly and fired, purposely missing Reina’s head. Reina watched as the blast ripped through Cassian’s shoulder.
“No!” She cried, watching him fall back, Han grabbing him before he could hit the ground.
“I think now would be a good time to leave, Reina!” He shouted, dragging the wounded Cassian backward into the hangar. Reina traded her lightsaber for her more trusted blaster and fired wildly into the crowd of Nira’s henchmen, dodging their shots as she ran.
“Han!” She screamed.” Get K-2 to override the doors!” Even from her distance, she could see the droid hacking into the controls. “Close them! She ordered.
She was yanked backward by Nira, who landed a punch to her stomach.
“The Besai’s have a pretty price on your head.” She spat. “It’s time you went back to being Zane’s bitch.” The doors were nearly sealed. Reina was running out of time.
“Never.” She growled, firing her blastor into Nira’s chest and watched her body slump over. She pushed the corpse off of her and slid under the closing door just in time for it to lock.
“They’ve already started to disassemble your ship, so we’re going to have to take mine,” Han called out. Cassian groaned in pain as he was dragged towards the large metal ship. It wasn’t ideal, but it was all they had.
“We need to get out of here before-” Cassian winced, unable to speak. Reina took his face in her hands, tears of guilt welling in her eyes.
“I’m so sorry.” It was her fault. She had gotten cocky and Nira punished him instead. Cassian, seeing the distress in her face, mustered a smile.
“I’ve had worse.” Reina helped him onto Han’s ship and the door began to close. Chewie yelped as Han flipped switches and slammed buttons in the cockpit.
“I’m going, I’m going!” The stressed smuggler yelled back.
“Reina!” A new, yet horrifyingly familiar, voice cut through the chaos, silencing everything else to Reina’s mind.
“No.” She whimpered, turning to the closing ship door. Zane stood at the door of the hangar bay, his eyes red with determined fury.
“What is it?” Cassian asked pulling himself up just in time to see the man greedily reaching out as the door closed. Han took off, barely able to keep the ship from getting pulled in as well. “Reina?” Cassian’s voice seemed far away, drowned out by the jeers and cruel laughter.
Her breathing became rapid and her body moved without her. She lifted Cassian, draping his good arm over her shoulder and taking him into the larger room of the ship. A voice that sounded like her own called for Chewie. When the Wookie joined her to help tend to Cassian’s wound, she felt the panic overtake her. She stumbled into the cockpit, choking on the air as she tried to breathe.
“Hey, do me a favor and don’t throw up on the-” Han turned to look at her and his snarky tone turned to sincere. “Are you okay?” Reina looked back at him with the eyes of a frightened child.
“He was there.” She finally gasped. Han turned the ship to autopilot and crossed the cockpit as she slunk to the floor.
“Take it, easy kid.” He knelt and reached out to touch her shoulder, but thought better of it. He’d seen old fighters have attacks like this at some of the bars he frequented. When the memories were too much. “Try and take deep breaths. What happened back there?” Han had been too busy preparing the ship, he didn’t see the eldest Besai son viciously stalking his prey as she escaped.
Reina calmed herself down enough to catch her breath. She hadn’t had a panic attack like that in years. When she allowed herself to feel happiness with Cassian, she didn’t realize that the other feelings would break out of their numb, suppressed state.
“Zane.” She spat, the name venom on her tongue. Han nodded in understanding. While conventional comfort was far from his forte, there was one thing he was very familiar with.
“Do you want a drink?”
-
Ignoring the advice of his droid and whining Wookie, Cassian stood and walked about the ship until he found Reina sitting with Han in the cockpit. Compared to earlier, Reina’s behavior had changed completely. She was bright and… giggling?
“Cassian!” She exclaimed, tripping on her own feet as she stumbled towards him. He caught her before she could go too far, making a pained moan as her impact hit his shoulder. “Where have you been? I’ve been waiting for ages.” Her words were breathy and slurred. Cassian gave Han a furious glare.
“What did you do to her?” He held her up with one arm, taking in the heavy scent of alcohol on her breath.
“You know,” She gulped. “I haven’t had Ardees since I broke into Varan’s stores when I was fifteen.” Reina snickered, pushing away from Cassian and leaning against the wall. “He chained me to the courtyard wall for five days. Can you believe that? Five days!” She continued to laugh and Cassian’s expression grew darker.
“She was upset, so I offered her a drink.” Han shrugged. “She’s been through a lot.”
“And getting her drunk erases that?” Cassian shouted.
“No, but it helps to forget,” Reina said somberly, her previous giddiness fading slightly. “At least for a little while.” She lifted the flask, offering it to him.
“Come on, Andor.” Han chuckled. “We won’t reach the next port for at least a few hours. Sit down and have a drink.” Cassian looked at Reina’s drunken smile and sighed, taking the flask from her.
Chewie joined them and the four sat in the cockpit as Han told them stories of his smuggling adventures. As much as Cassian hated to admit it, it was actually kind of pleasant. It was almost as if they were a group of old friends, reminiscing about easier days when they had no worries or cares, even if they had. The worries and cares then seemed trivial now. But sitting there, listening to the charismatic- if not somewhat obnoxious- smuggler talk, Cassian took Reina’s hand and felt the first moment of calm since they had left Emre’s home. And he didn’t want to let go.
-
“It was Zane,” Reina said suddenly as they laid down on old sheets rather than sleep on the cold metal floor. It was her idea that they try to rest before reaching the next port so they could regain their strength. “He was the man on the ship.” Cassian’s face contorted with a strange mixture of rage and concern.
“How did he find you?” Reina shrugged.
“Nira must have contacted the Besais when she called the Empire to come for you.” The two sat, Cassian groaning when he accidentally hit his shoulder. The sling on his arm made moving increasingly difficult. Reina felt another wave of guilt. “I should have known I wasn’t enough.”
“Reina-” Cassian sighed.
“I’m broken, Cassian.” Her voice was sad, but mostly, it held acceptance. “The Force would ever want me.” He put a hand over her heart, keeping his eyes locked on hers.
“There’s something in you.” His voice was insistent and sincere. “Something special.” He wrapped his good arm around her waist and they leaned in, their lips moments away from-
“Perhaps next time ‘Something Special” will be useful in preventing injury.” K2 mocked scornfully. “Like Cassian losing the use of his left arm.” Cassian tried to stand, scrap metal on his mind, but Reina held him back.
“Leave him.” She placed a gentle kiss on his cheek. “You need to rest.” As the two laid together, Cassian took a deep breath.
“It’s been nearly four months since I found you.” His breath was warm on the back of her neck.
“Four months of being free.” She added. Four months of Zane and Varan searching. A few more seconds in the hangar and she would be on Zane’s ship on the way back to Tatooine, alive or as a corpse. Perhaps her time of happiness, her time with Cassian, was running out.

I dont really get Tuko'er. If he loves and wants Utanzhu that much then why wouldn't he just be with her? Seems like hes just doing all this to himself.
i’m v tired rn, but i have a burning desire to answer this. mild spoilers below the cut
i think some of you guys might know the saying ‘a marriage is between two families’, so for this setting and with these characters, ‘a marriage is between two provinces’.
tuko’er, despite his bravado, doesn’t have complete control of his court, and they do not place complete faith in him. they can only force him to do so much, and he can only rebel so much before throwing asyu’er into a crisis. he wants to marry utanzhu, and he’s made it clear many times, but he can’t get the support of the court to do it. did he want to marry his other wives? not particularly, but they provided him with the connections and resources he needed. in this society, it’s very commonplace for that to happen, yet he breaks conventions by not taking any of them as his primary/legal consort.
the utanzhu mc, for obvious reasons, can’t break the masquerade, and therefore is in no position to marry. that aside, even if she were to break the facade, it still wouldn’t happen because two clan heads simply don’t marry -- especially if one already has consorts and heirs (1). and say all those conventions were thrown out, it still couldn’t happen because he needs to keep his other in-laws happy, and gain approval from his court, which simply can’t happen. his in-laws want to maintain influence, and will threaten to revoke their support, and his court still believes that utanzhu will bring about his downfall.
in the case of sarizhu (the npc), it’s pretty much the same as the utanzhu mc, with the addition that she doesn’t want to be one of many consorts, and the relationship she has with tuko’er isn’t healthy in the least. she simply refuses to be involved with him, but they have that destructive relationship where they both just tear each other apart.
tuko’er really does try, but everyone else is against it, and he can’t just throw away the position and power he killed for. you know, murdering his father and half-brother are cardinal sins, and majority of the populace fear him and believe that he’s a monster for going against the gods and committing such an offence to filial piety.
(1) if two clan heads were to marry, it would have to be as legal consorts. according to tradition, one can only take on wives/concubines after taking a legal wife, and the legal wife is supposed to have an heir before any other. breaching these social protocols is seen as a corruption of morals, and that makes one lose face to the public. that’s why it’s okay for yibeduzi and utanzhu to marry, because neither are attached to anything before marriage, so it’s seen as obeying nature’s order. but if tuko’er were to marry utanzhu, because he already has wives and children, he would be seen as a man of loose morals, and disrespecting the utanzhu clan and all of fuyuzhi. in the court of law, no crime has been committed, but in the people’s eyes, he’s less than scum, and will never command their respect, which in turn weakens utanzhu’s public favour

██▒   GENERAL
NAME:  unknown, but for all intents and purposes he goes by Finn ALIAS(ES):  FN-2187, Eight-Seven, Traitor, Big Deal GENDER:  male AGE:  23 DATE OF BIRTH:  11 ABY OCCUPATION:  Stormtrooper, unofficial leader of his four-unit FN squad, ex-Stormtrooper/Defector, almost-space pirate, Resistance/Rebel Scum, Prince of Artorias, Grey Jedi ( FITE ME IN THE CLUB THIS WILL 5EVER BE MY FAV THEORY ).
██▒   APPEARANCE
EYE COLOR:  Dark brown HAIR COLOR:  Jet black HEIGHT:   5′10″ SCARS:  A lifetime worth of various physical scars from training with the First Order. The most prominent are the ones that can’t be seen, the scars littered across his brain and upon his heart. BURNS:  The lightsaber burns that cauterized into scars from his battle with Kylo Ren, on his right shoulder and across his back.
OVERWEIGHT:  Being overweight doesn’t exactly meet First Order specifications, where BMI is a definitely a thing that’s closely monitored and maintained. It’s also hard to overindulge when you’re only ever given a set amount of food that wasn’t designed for flavour but nutrients and efficiency. Finn might really go hard when he experiences first hand what real food could taste like, but keeping fit has been ingrained in him that going overweight wouldn’t be an issue even then. UNDERWEIGHT:  He was as close as he was going to get to being underweight as a kid, where the First Order trained them hard from the get go and he was slow at eating at first that his food was always taken away when he didn’t eat fast enough in the allotted time and he’d burn more calories than he ate.
██▒   FAVORITE
COLOR:   Anything but red or white. Maybe shades of brown, like the colour of his jacket, the first thing he’d ever owned, the colour of Poe’s eyes, the colour of Rey’s hair… HAIR COLOR:  No preference. EYE COLOR:  No preference. SONG:  If it’s not First Order-issued he’d love it. Probably something instrumental, so he can feel the music without having to worry about language barriers or not understanding the themes he’s not used to yet. MOVIE: Something comedic, since life could always use some laughter, or dramatic, to focus  on other people’s problems than his own, or something educational, since Finn loves to learn new things. TV SHOW: Generally same genres as movies? In a modern verse he’d definitely be the type to watch National Geographic or HGTV and yell at people who chose the wrong house on House Hunters lmaO Definitely be crying a river at This Is Us. FOOD: Anything; he has a lot to make up for after years of food that tasted like cardboard. Something with lots of protein because he’s used to that or something he can eat with his hands/finger food, because he’d get taste and touch sensations in one. DRINK:  Water, protein shakes ( unfortuately or not ). Much like food, he has a lot of make up for and try. He’d be more reluctant on alcoholic drinks since he’d like to be alert but he’d want to taste it at least once. BOOK:  Something educational, like history that he has obviously been taught wrong on in the First Order or mission reports PASSED UNIVERSITY:  Never been. In a modern verse you bet your ass he passed in the top one percentile.  HAD SEX:  Not yet 8D HAD SEX IN PUBLIC:  No, and though he would literally have no shame in doing so ( communal sonics are a thing in the First Order okay, he wouldn’t blink an eye at a naked body, male or female ) he wouldn’t necessarily be open to it? It’s just a very private moment that he’d like to keep between him and his partner and not share with curious onlookers. GOTTEN PREGNANT:  No ( but you know what Oscar said, you dunno what’s going on with these aliens anything’s possible lmao ) KISSED A BOY:  Yes ( fite me in the pit he kissed Slip okay ) KISSED A GIRL:  Yes ( thanks Rose ) GOTTEN TATTOOS: There was a time I believed the First Order, like, tattooed barcodes of stormtrooper’s designation somewhere but I’m not sure where I am with that. Either way it’s something he’d be open to, whether to cover that up or just because. GOTTEN PIERCINGS:  No. Not sure if he ever get a piercing? On the off chance that he would it’d probably be something not conventional like a nipple piercing or something lmAO HAD A BROKEN HEART:  Yes, and not strictly in the romantic sense. BEEN IN LOVE:  He could’ve been? How does one ever know they’re in love tbh STAYED UP FOR MORE THAN 24 HOURS: It’s not really a thing that happens in the First Order, but I feel like that first night after he crashed on Jakku would’ve been the first he’s ever been up for more than a day because it was just not safe to sleep.
██▒   ARE THEY
A VIRGIN:   Yes. Who wants to help change that 8D A KISSER:   He would love kissing. SCARED EASILY:   He’s high-strung and paranoid for sure, but escaping from the First Order who would kill him on sight ( or worse, capture and re-condition him ) tends to do that to a person. He’s also quite afraid of losing the people he cares about or seeing them in danger, especially to the First Order ( Finn screaming Rey’s name in TFA will forever haunt me ).  JEALOUS EASILY:   Envious, not jealous. He’s never really had anything or anyone to lose to be jealous of. The only thing of value he ever had was his position as “teacher’s pet”, and he was more worried about losing the praise that he longed for than being bitter about someone else receiving it instead. He would always focus on the pain of losing something than the anger of losing it that usually goes with jealously.  TRUSTWORTHY:  In spite of the environment he’s had to grow up in, Finn is someone you can put your trust in, if you could get past his past. He doesn’t lie often ( partly because he’s rather bad at it ), and when he does his heart is in the right place; whether it’s to save his life ( saying he was with the Resistance ) or to save another’s life ( both times to save and protect Rey ). He’s incredibly loyal to those he trusts, but it’s gaining his trust that’s the issue.  DOMINANT:  On the battlefield, for sure. It’s what he’s been trained to do, what’s gotten him considered to be promoted, after all. In terms of intimately, he could be? Top from the bottom lmao It’s more something he’d rather share than take on solo. SUBMISSIVE:   As good as a leader as Finn could be on the battlefield, he's also pretty good at taking orders ( except for, y’know, orders he doesn’t fully agree with ). Intimately, again, it’s something he’d like to share. But if anyone’s deserving of being doted and loved on it’s Finn, and he would never be with someone he didn’t trust and feel comfortable enough to be submissive with. A lot of people would think he'd want complete control of his life after everything he’s been through, but sometimes he would just want to let go and know that someone would be there for him. IN LOVE:  thread dependent. SINGLE:  Currently, yes.
██▒   RANDOM QUESTIONS
HAVE THEY HARMED THEMSELVES:  Not in the conventional way. Finn beats himself up real good in his head and it shows in how he views himself. He also tends to push himself past his limits physically like he did right after he woke up from a coma, which stems from his time in the First Order where he had to be the best, had to be useful to have any purpose. THOUGHT OF SUICIDE / ATTEMPTED SUICIDE:  A lot of people would call what happened on Crait a suicide mission, but Finn didn’t see it so much as wanting to kill himself and more like the canon had to be stopped, the First Order needed to be stopped, and this was the only way to do it and he was hell-bent on completing it. Finn doesn’t want to die, especially not before he’s truly even lived, but ironically he constantly finds himself in situations where death as an outcome is very likely. WANTED TO KILL SOMEONE:   Wanted to kill someone, no. Wanted to wreck someone until an inch of their life, or wish someone fell off a cliff and died, definitely, but he wouldn’t want to actually kill someone himself. It’s not something he enjoys. Besides, there are worse things than death that could be done. DROVE A CAR:  He can pilot speeders. HAVE/HAD A JOB:  No, unless you consider being forced to become a stormtrooper a job ( though even if you did he never got paid for it, nor will he get paid for being a part of the Resistance so... ). He almost had a job had he joined Sidon Ithano’s crew on Takodana, if that counts? lmao
██▒   FAMILY
SIBLINGS:  verse dependent  ( *winks at @starsrebcrn* ) PARENTS:  unknown ( verse dependent ) CHILDREN:   None unless you count BB-8 wut, but if you don’t think Finn would take in the kids that he saves from Project Resurrection ( yeah, there’s an official name to the First Order kidnapping children and forcing them to be stormtroopers ) then you don’t know Finn. PETS: None, but Big Deal Jr. the Huttlet was a thing that’s lmAO ( @ziinariya knows what’s up ) and I can get on board Finn owning a dog named BB-9E.

Why I liked Finn’s arc in TLJ
Threatened post. Spoilers. I am viewing through a particular lens, in which I see Finn as an abuse survivor.  Chop!
Okay so again I’m not stepped in the lore of Star Wars. I saw TFA and his “let’s run away” plotline and was like “I get, bro.” Sometimes I spend all day in bed and refer to it as “hiding” days because anxiety is too great.
So like, at the end of TFA, Finn stands and fights for someone (which through the lens of race is problematic that he is like the “helper” of the white jedi girl, who actually wins the fight. And then he’s unconscious.)
I assumed for Finn, it’s been moments since TFA--since he just wakes up. His mindset is still all about Rey. (”Where’s Rey?” “How do I save Rey?” “I’ve got to get this homing beacon away so it doesn’t fuck up REY’S MISSION?”) And when he meets Rose and she refers to him as “hero” of the resitance it is kind of played for laughs.
Finn doesn’t think of HIMSELF as the hero. (Sadface! Sadface!) HE still thinks REY and POE are the heroes.
He goes on this mission to Canto Bright again more as a helper, I think? And Rose gets him to see things he’s not considered before. A fantasy, escapist city is very appealing to him. He doesn’t see the underbelly that she does.
What first strikes him in that scene when she’s talking about how awful it really is, is the horse-creatures being beaten. They’re being prodded with cattle prod type taser weapons. And I assumed this was somehow related to his Stormtrooper Training? (Again I don’t know shit about Star Wars!) But I assume the Stormtroopers aren’t like “Hey think for yourself! Do what you want!“ to the kids.
He has more in common with the horses than the people. Sniffle.
And then the Benecio del Toro character comes, and starts appealing to Finn’s own mixed up sense of morality. And this is the first time that Finn’s opinion on good and evil really matters. It’s the first time he’s thought about these things. Free thought! Crazy!
But he continually rejects BDT and sides with Rose and the horses. (I see Rose as relating to the children who take care of the horses which I guess is problematic in the helper way that Finn was in TFA.) And they set those horse-things free! And it is fun! But also cathartic for Finn.
And the mission then turns out to be not what they thought it was because of Poe’s insurrection and Benecio’s betrayal.
AND THAT’S WHEN CAPTAIN PHASMA SHOWS UP!! This was squee for me. Because I thought it was telling. Phasma is not REY or POE’s villain. She is Finn’s villain. She was his captain. She still calls him by the number he was assigned, and tries to make him go back to that abused mindset.
I found the scene where she breaks out the kind of light-saber axes kind of harrowing. Because I thought it was like the cattle prods for the horses. They are animals to her not even worthy of a human death.
And in that moment, Finn fights back against her. He becomes the hero of his own story not Rey’s or Poe’s. I wish the fight had been longer and cooler, tbh. But when John Boyega raises up on that platform and tells Phasma he is “rebel scum” I cried like a baby.
He is finally accepting himself as a member of the resistance (like Rose had said he was!) and he’s standing there like a fucking bamf. I liked the visuals of it because Gwendoline Christie is, duh, quite tall. But they found a way to make him BIGGER than her. Her visor cracks and we can see the humanity that is buried deep within her, hidden.
She is no longer as scary as he once was. She’s not the monster of his mind. Her power over him is gone. He is bigger and better than her. He’s the hero. She’s the real scum.
He is victorious over his abuser!
And then, on the salt planet (sorry I pay no attention to the names and shit) we see him acting more like POE, when he wants to go for the canon. Which, I think must be his idea of what a hero is. (Which, shippers, why are you not on this?) And Rose has to stop him, similar to how Admiral Holdo stopped Poe and make him remember what the rebellion is really about.
It’s about people. It’s about hearts and minds. Love. All that soft squishy stuff. And of course there is all that BEAUTIFUL imagery of how Rose and Finn have inspired the children of Canto Bright to be part of the Rebellion. They will be the next generation, even if many of them have been wiped out it’s not over because of what Finn and Rose accomplished--they are the heroes of the Rebellion like Luke was to so many of this one.
And it actually made me wonder if in the next film we will not see Finn do something that has never been tried before--as far as I know--which would be to reach out to the other Stormtroopers. To inspire them. He could defeat the First Order in a way that Rey or Poe never could, just because he was once one of them and has gone on to have a name for himself and become the hero he is. Not in the conventional way of blowing things up (Poe) or using the Force (Rey). but by changing hearts and minds.
TL;DR: I heart Finn forever. I want to see him stand in front of his fellows and show them how cowardly the First Order really is. I want him to END IT.
You can do it, bb! I know you can!

Note
Why do people keep coming at you with made up things? xD Shouldn't it be obvious by now that you're a sweetheart? Real life gay icon.
Idk, dude. I think it’s because I’m an Adult (THE ENEMY), and possibly also because I have a lot of followers? Being an adult with a lot of followers (especially a queer woman-presenting person) seems to make younger queer folks, especially teenagers, want to rebel against you.
People literally reach half-way across the world to come up with shit on me. They’ll comb my posts word-for-word to find some way to prove I’m racist scum. Oh, and people have literally made up ACTUAL lies about me - I recently read on Twitter that someone was spreading rumours about me brown-facing at a convention in 2016. The first convention I ever went to was in 2017.
I think there’s a lot of psychological models that could explain this behaviour… in the end, I think it’s a combination of people being miserable, people finding solidarity and friendship in all bonding over bitching about the same Bad Evil Person together, people just actually not being very nice, positive people, and also sort of existential jealousy. Ie, not being jealous of me as a person specifically, but jealous of my happiness, the fact I’m living my dreams, etc.
Genuinely, I hope these nasty people grow up and end up being nice people who’d never do that to others in the end. I’m not waiting by the phone for an apology though ;)
(thanks for the kind words)
