Heavy Trip (2018): Review
(Spoliers free)
Just watch the movie today, and im going to say...this was the BEST metal movie I ever watch so far. (Thinking about watching deathgasm next)
To start off, if you dont know, Heavy Trip is a 2018 film about four Finnish metalheads (Turo, Xytrax, Jynkky, and Lotvonen) of the band "Imapled Rektum" got a big opportunity to play in a metal festival in Norway. It's basically a fish out of water story of the lead singer, Turo, of him facings the lions (metaphor for his fears).
The best part of the film is the characters, music, and comedy. My favorite characters are definitely Xytrax who is awkward but very smart about metal music and Jynkky being the passion and the shine of his friends and band. Turo is the most relatable character since I used to go through what he went through (being afraid to be seen as a failure). Unlike Hunter from Metal Lords (2022) which the people in his school actually have a good reason to not like (since he an asshole to everyone including his best friend); Turo is actually kind to everyone and the townspeople treat him like shit just because of how he looks. The only character I don't like is Jouni (idk he gives me "to catch a predator"/ pedo vibes).
Moving on, the soundtrack is amazing. There only song was the best orginial song in a movie I ever heard. Way better than Skullflower's songs in Metal Lords. The only problem I have (more like a nick pick) is I wish they put more metals songs espeically black metal since they're in Finland going to Norway.
Lastly, there were so much funny scenes in the film (mainly during the end of the film). There not one time I didnt stop laughing. The film is soo chaotic, that is funny asf. At least for the metal jokes, Its acutally seem sinecre and dont take themsevles seriously while in Metal Lords there werent all of jokes I laughed at and you could aruge that the movie kinda mocks metalheads inside of appericating them.
Basically I recommed this move so much. If you want to see it, its on tubi for free (you dont need to sign up for watching it):
Till then, hope yall have a good day and stay metal 🤘

thank you nevaknewhername if i spelt that write PRAYING i did for the motivation! more zakk stuff!!
PLEASEEEEE give me suggestions or ideas or constructive criticism cause i’m not the best with grammar! and also i haven’t watched deathgasm again in a bit so all i remember about zakk is that he’s an asshole with no mercy so keep that in mind lol
minors dni pretty please with a cherry and sprinkles on top <33
.*•.*+ ⛦ .*•.-+
“you’re such a fuckin’ slut.” Zakk whispered while pounding you missionary and slow but hard, sending shockwaves through your body. “Zakk, p-please.. i need more.” you whispered through moans and whines. Zakk smirked, his eyes glazed over with lust. “Beg.” is all he said in a deep merciless tone. with no hesitation, you did as he asked. “Zakk, baby, please i need you to be faster. please, i need you so so bad. i want your cock pounding faster, please.” Zakk licked his lips, a smirk still plastered on his face. “good.” he whispered before he adjusted his position so he could get a deeper angle and then started going faster and oh so much harder. wet skin slapping together mixed with your pornographic moans and his low grunts was filling the room. his cock was pounding deep inside of you, you could feel everything he has to give you, and it felt so fucking incredible. You were moaning his name, your words cut through by loud slaps of skin on skin. “Zakk, oh god, fuck, I think i’m gonna cum.” Zakk kept his pace, waiting for the moment you’d tighten around him. “Fuck, baby.” he said in a low voice, his eyes shut from pleasure as you came. the squeezing of his cock you were giving him was an unmatched pleasure. Once your orgasm was done, his thrusts began to be a little sloppy, and his sounds getting louder and whinier. With no warning, you felt hot cum inside of you, the feeling of being filled by Zakk was amazing, he had so much to give whenever he came his eyes opened to look down at you, a small smirk of satisfaction on his face. slightly chapped pink lips came down to kiss your soft lips as he held your cheeks with rough hands. Zakk isn’t much of a kisser, but when he kisses, he’s a wonderful one and each time it’s filled with love. “I love you.” you said softly. “love you too, baby.” Zakk said with a smile. Sweet shit like this is pretty out of character for mean and tough boy Zakk, but he really does have a soft spot for you, as much as he hates to admit it.
.*•.*+ ⛦ .*•.-+
that’s it!! i hope this is okay!! please tell me what you think!

I have seen like zero movies with adult metalheads, where they were serious characters and not just cartoonish joke of a character. Bit sad. 😥😤
I agree that there needs to be more of them. There's not a large pool of movies or media that give metalheads a fair(ish) take, BUT... I do have some stuff I wanna share that I love, and while some of it can feel cartoonish, it's not without its deep cuts either. Let me plead my case...
Tumblr media
Airheads is a movie I will die for. It's got mother fucking Brendan Fraser in it, and it has one of the only roles that Steve Buscemi has played where I kinda wanted to fuck him... Adam Sandler is fine in it, too, oddly enough. And it's just a totally underrated movie I feel like everyone has heard of but rarely watched.
Tumblr media
Lords of Chaos flew under my radar for many years until my best buddy @gomakeawaffle forced me to watch it. It's quiet, heavy, metal as fuck, and does an amazing job of telling about the band Mayhem. The aesthetics alone are worth the watch.
Tumblr media
Okay, Deathgasm is cute and fun, and I'll die on this hill. I've seen so many people get into this movie, spot the preppy blonde and turn it off. Like... if they had just watched another 15 minutes, they'd see that chick turn into a metal-loving battle maiden wielding a fire axe against demons. It's hilarious and adorable, and it's just plain fucking fun. It's also probably got the best metalhead rep of them all.
Tumblr media
Wayne's World... enough said... (That Alice Cooper Scene. LOL)
Tumblr media
Is Brutal Legends over the top? Yes. Is it stupid? Yes. Does it have an amazing soundtrack? Yes. Is it a love letter to all metalheads everywhere? YES. This game is the fucking shit, and it's still fun a fuck to play now as it was on the 360. Eddie is just... ugh, such a fucking charmer (how can you not love Jack Black too??)
Tumblr media
I've been watching Metalocalypse since it first aired on Adult Swim, and I even got to meet Brendon Small (the voice of Nathan Splosion) while I was doing B-roll for Adult Swim Fest in my hometown in 2010. It doesn't have a very decent ending, so like... if no one's watched it, be warned going in. They canceled it, then came back and tried to wrap it up with a long final episode that was pretty meh. Every episode is basically a loose plot followed by a song number and a blood bath, but there's some fun behind-the-scenes manipulation plot that's a blast as it goes on. Also... GILFs... and a spikey codpiece...
Tumblr media
Alright, Onward has nothing to do with metal, but it's got one of the most lovable metalheads I've ever seen. I feel like Barley is a culmination of every metalhead I knew in high school. Fuckin' dork, lovable, just are unapologetically themselves. Also, Gwendoline does have a sweet-ass paint job.
Tumblr media
I mean... Stranger Things really had some rough times, but Eddie Munson stole everyone's hearts, so like... Hnnnn, he's just utter perfection, right down to the musical high horse he charges into battle on. XD
Man... we need more metal content. If anyone has some stuff I should check out, PLEASE PLEASE let me know. <3

Wondering if Zakk and Brodie (deathgasm 2015) ever helped each other out with their corpse paint, or if they had to hold the others face still with one hand to get the angles right, or if their faces ever got really close when they were doing that, or if their minds ever wandered while watching their friend (friend friend just friend) paint their face, if they ever focused on the soft press of the pain brush around their lips and under their eyes- so gently turning them into something wretched and evil, if they ever spiraled at the sight of the others focus, if they ever wondered “if I kiss him, will all the black and white on us turn into grey?”, if they ever thought- much later after half the corpse paint had sweated off anyway- “I want to make us grey”

🌧🌼⭐️🌙🌕✨️ i LOVE YOU
🌧 I like to be inside with a hot coffee or apple cider and curl up in blankets and my garv sweatshirt and maybe play a game.
🌼 instant apple cider (its a drink idc).
⭐ I most recently watched bungou stray dogs and I liked it a lot! But a really stubborn braincell keeps pulling me back to kuro.
🌙 uhhh I really don't read :( I just bought one of the bungou light novels though! And a kuro volume I've already read but it has my favorite part(s) of the series so having a paper copy is nice
🌕 Mascara is a life saver. I would say eyeliner but sometimes I avoid doing it.
✨ there are 2 of these. Doing both.
I like to rewatch john wick and house of 1000 corpses! I always want to rewatch deathgasm and then for some reason I just. Never do
And I generally imagine stuff to music, but a major one for me is Hey Pretty by poe cause I turned the mental video into a script and used it in a class. It was for Milo and Lake!

Hello, it's your Secret Santa 🎅. Happy Sunday! Sorry I haven't sent a message for a bit. I'm sick and have been spending a lot of time sleeping. How has your weekend been? Did you make it through finals week unscathed?
Fight Club is a good movie. I haven't seen it in awhile. What would you say some of your favorite movies are?
It's hard figuring out what job you want to do, and I think alot of us never really figure it out. When I was a kid, I wanted to be a writer, and I went through a phase where I wanted to be a lawyer too. Now I can't even imagine myself being a lawyer 🤣. What kinds of jobs did you want to have when you were a kid?
I looked at some of your photography in your tags! My favorites are the night time photos. Things have a way of looking different at night. Almost an eerie quality.
Since I asked about movies earlier and it's around Christmas time, do you have any holiday movies that you like to watch? My favorite is It's a Wonderful Life. I watch it every year.
Anyway, I will be checking in soon! Have a great day and an amazing week!
oh no! i was sick last week n it was miserable, i hope you're feeling better. the weekend was good and i've made it thru finals unscathed so far (pretty sure my liver hasn't tho, lol) but i have one more exam tomorrow.
fight club is insane. some of my fav movies are the dirt, smokey and the bandit, this is spinal tap, gone with the wind, convoy, the outsiders, almost famous, rock star, trick or treat, drugstore cowboy, zachariah, brokeback mountain, and deathgasm. i like movies a lot.
when i was a kid i always wanted to be either a musician, a mechanic, or a nascar driver. i would say the goals haven't changed much. i always say that if all goes go hell, i'll be a trucker.
im glad you like the photos! i have some from this week that i need to post (all nighttime, because i ain't out much during the day anymore.)
im not a big fan of the holidays or holiday movies, but i do like die hard and national lampoons christmas vacation. and of course, home alone. i've never seen it's a wonderful life.
you have a good day and a good week too!

fav super gorey bloody movies? i can neverrrr get enough blood and guts <3
ohh yes absolutely.. i'm the same way body horror n gore r my fave parts of horror i got you <3 i have A Lot so here we go. (this got very long and i got quite passionate in my commentary whoops!)
possession (1981) duh. gore doesn’t kick in for a bit and isn’t super long and gorey but it’s SO GOOD when it does
deathgasm (2015) was sooooo fun and gorey and bloody and campy. very much an ode to evil dead.
OH and if you haven’t seen evil dead that too!!! i like evil dead 2 a lot more than the first but both have good gore
basket case (1982) so fun
the loved ones (2009) really gorey really fun really cool horror role reversal. i ❤️evil teenage girls. felt martyrs (2008)-esque in some parts, which i will talk abt later in this post
IMPETIGORE (2019) !!!!! literally one of my favorite movies ever it’s SO underrated and was soo good and gorey and literally everything i could want in a horror film.. fucked up lore, nature and graveyards AGH it was so good. it’s a shudder original but i think you should be able to find it through other means if u dont have shudder
the autopsy of jane doe (2016) much more a medical gore type situation but i loved it
the dentist (1996) super fun mouth themed horror / gore. felt like a fever dream and a drug trip combined. the second one was also really fun
audition (1999) literally need to say nothing about this
the hellraiser series!! I’ve only seen up to 5 i think but 1 + 2 are so good. (2nd is my fave)
the saw franchise is all great gore!!
raw (2016) so good. cannibalism. weird sisterhood. need i say more
may (2002) was so damn good!! i think you would really love this one, there's a milk + blood moment in it!! and weird creepy dolls!!
suspiria (1977) and the 2018 version were so good! the 2018 one wasn't so much a remake as more than a retelling and expansion. i personally did the 2018 one first and then the 1977 one upon a recommendation so that you can go into the 2018 one without comparing it to the original, which i felt helped in my enjoyment of it a lot.
house of wax (2005) i have some mixed feelings on this movie as i do think it plays into the “omg people who look different than us are sooo evil and fucked up horror trope” but. the gore is amazing and the soundtrack fucks so hard.
the descent (2005) literally there’s a lake of blood. and very very very few men god bless.
american mary (2012) incredible amazing outstanding show stopping never been done before
revenge (2017) no idea how i feel about this movie but the gore was good
okay and now the cronenberg section of the reclist. i recommend everything of his so here are his more gorey ones ranked by my faves (dead ringers isn’t gorey really but it gets an honorable mention as my fave cronenberg)
videodrome, shivers, the fly, rabid, the brood, scanners (these are more body horror than pure guts n blood but they are great nonetheless)
okay and now my two really fucked up but amazing recs that i have to give a disclaimer these are Intense and not-for-everyone-recs
martyrs (2008) is one of my top 10 movies ever i adored it so much and it’s so gorey and gross and wonderful but as i said, quite intense and stomach churning.
and then the nekromantik series. these are quite a bit of meta commentary films, i.e why would someone watch this because they really are gross and insane. nekromantik 2 was my favorite. but yeah big big warning for these in general. definitely hard stomach churning watches, and makes you question why you are watching them, but still amazing. but yeah. proceed with caution with them if you watch them.

Deathgasm (2015)
Genre: Horror/Comedy
Who’s In It: Milo Cawthorne, James Blake, Kimberly Crossman, Sam Berkley, Daniel Cresswell
Who Directed It: Jason Lei Howden
Plot:  Two teenage boys unwittingly summon an ancient evil entity known as The Blind One by delving into black magic while trying to escape their mundane lives.
Running Time: 86 Minutes
IMDB Score: 6.3
Why I Watched It: It had gotten some decent genre buzz and had started a mini cult following so I thought I’d give it a try.
Where I Watched It: I found it on Amazon Prime Canada
Random Thoughts: Make no mistake this is a throw back movie, there was a time when heavy medal music and horror went had in hand now not so much as “heavy metal or death metal” aren’t as commercial but it’s still niche and cultish.
This is an indie film from New Zealand.  Just wanted to throw that out there, had no follow up, sorry my bad.
What I Liked: This does have a cult film, no budget indie vibe to it, something you would come across in your video store and it does help that it’s from New Zealand.  So it’s pretty standard, a heavy metal head has to move in with his aunt and uncle and is bullied in school and finds some nerdie friends and one metal head to start a band.  Horror ensues.  It can’t be a heavy metal horror without a record that could summon great evil and blah blah blah.  Standard premise but I do like the enthusiasm, glee and all out gore that director brings to the film.
It’s a young unknown cast Cawthorne and Crossman are the standouts for me, yes they’re playing stock characters but both have enough charm to make them feel at least somewhat believable.   There’s a couple of images that are cool and the film does move well and they bring the noise that’s for sure.
What I Didn’t Like: They had a tough road to ho here as they had two horror sub-genres that are tricky, the horror/comedy and the horror/heavy, there’s humor and the heavy metal culture is there but the horror part is pure cliche, also some of the sub-plots are very tired I honestly would be fine if we can do away with seeing kids bullied in school oh and the one cute girl is with the good looking jerk and kind of secretly likes our nerdie lead, really?  Also the plot, a song, an evil song is played and yes great evil is summoned, and of course if you played it again backwards then you undo it.
The second lead played by James Blake is very annoying and would have worked better as a bad guy, instead he does these mean and evil things but he does it in service of the plot so he’s forgiven.  The film also relies mostly on dick and shit jokes for their humor and some land but most times it just gross and unfunny.  The action is decent but nothing to write home about.
Final Thoughts: I can see why it’s getting a following but for me it’s not clever or funny enough to be an enjoyable movie, it’s fine and I liked the effort but it didn’t make me laugh that much and it was leaning too much on cliches for me to get engaged.
Rating: 4/10

Daddy.
“I had zero arrogance because I didn’t know what the fuck I was doing.”
We sat down with director Ant Timpson and star Elijah Wood to talk about pushing boundaries, living with dead bodies, and “de-greasing” the script of their new film Come To Daddy.
In the general flow of the movie industry, not a lot of producers make the shift to directing. But for New Zealander Ant Timpson, it seems like a natural move.
His unique genre predilections have long shone through in his producing credits, which include titles such as Housebound, The ABCs of Death (and its sequel), Turbo Kid, Deathgasm, The Field Guide to Evil, and the instantly iconic cult oddity The Greasy Strangler. Those predilections extend somewhat into his directorial debut, the darkly comedic new thriller Come To Daddy.
Scripted by The Greasy Strangler co-writer Toby Harvard, Come To Daddy is based on an idea from Timpson, who was “inspired” by his reaction to the death of his own father. As he articulates in this captivating blog post, the week Timpson spent in a house with his father’s body learning things he never knew about his dad not only sparked the plot of Come To Daddy, but also prompted Timpson to re-engage his long-held desire to direct movies.
In the resulting film, Elijah Wood (who worked alongside Timpson as a producer on The Greasy Strangler, and has put in his fair share of work hours in New Zealand) stars as Norval, a 30-ish hipster layabout who travels to a remote seaside home to meet with with the father he hasn’t seen since he was a child.
Norval’s reunion with pop (played by Canadian great Stephen McHattie) starts awkwardly, then gets increasingly weird, and soon mortal peril is in play.
Following the film’s well-received world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, Timpson and Wood sat down with Letterboxd for a two-on-one to talk about Come To Daddy.
Tumblr media
‘Come To Daddy’ director Ant Timpson.
Letterboxd: This film ends with the credit ‘Based on an idea by Ant Timpson’. What did you convey to Toby Harvard when you first approached him about this idea? Ant Timpson: I gave him the skeleton structure of: staying alone in a house with a dead body, trying to process that. Maybe thinking about: you didn’t know everything about your dad, the unresolved issues, not getting answers that you wanted, wanting to say stuff to him that you didn’t. All that stuff sons have with their dads. And mothers and daughters. So during the rest of the week [when Timpson Sr’s body was on display], people came to the house who I didn’t know had this alternate history [of my dad]. And learning that information, my brain took it to crazy extremes, as I do, as a movie guy. I took it in to weird areas. And I started formulating it and thinking. But also, a big part of it was like: watching someone die in front of you—what am I doing with my life? I used to dream about directing, and I’ve just been servicing everyone else’s dreams.
So your father’s death also served as an impetus to pursue your directorial dreams? AT: Get tryin’ or get dyin’, man. It was kind of like that. And I didn’t feel like I could just grab a script as a producer, because I come across scripts all the time, and nothing was like “Ooh, I need to direct that”.
Elijah Wood: I get that. I get that the impulse isn’t to just simply find a piece that somebody else wrote. It had to be personal, a fire within you that needed to be told.
AT: So it was the impetus, but it needed to have that emotional connection to make it actually happen. I was just lucky enough that Toby was game, and Toby brought everything to the party. He took that [idea] away and then came back with a draft that was really funny. It was kind of different from the final film. And so we bounced back and forth.
He got pissed off with me because I was quite rude, I think, with the first feedback I gave. We’ve got this dynamic relationship about the whole film. I think I was like: “This is really Greasy, we need to de-Grease it”. And so he did. And we always thought about Elijah. Toby was like, “It would be amazing for Elijah to be in it,” and we talked about that and what he could bring to it and ground the whole thing. Eventually it was in good enough shape to send out and so [producer] Mette-Marie [Kongsved] and Elijah read it. He was the first to read it really out of the gate.
Tumblr media
Elijah, you’ve had a professional relationship with Ant for years prior to this. Were you surprised or excited to hear that he was making his first film as a director? EW: Not surprised. Excited. It all really just fell into place. Because it was Toby too, we had all worked together on The Greasy Strangler. There was a lot of connective tissue that made sense. And it was not a surprise. I mean, he’s a filmmaker. As a producer, part of the job is understanding the process and guiding that process, so it’s not a huge leap. Then reading that script, it was just instant. It’s one of the better scripts I’ve read in years. It leaped off the page and it constantly surprised me in terms of where it was going. It starts off as one thing, and every step of the way your expectations are subverted. It’s shocking and funny and fucking crazy. And a blast. I immediately fell in love with it. And was intimidated by it.
I think from an emotional standpoint, what Norval has to go through… it’s a lot on Norval’s shoulders. And so I wanted to make sure that I delivered for that. I was honored that [Timpson] wanted me to be a part of it but I was also anxious about making sure that I honored that and serviced that in the right way. Particularly because it was based on a personal experience of Ant’s.
Was the Ant that you worked with on set as a director the same Ant you’d worked with in the previous years as a producer? EW: (high pitched) Yeah. Yeah.
AT: I feel like that’s part of my background of organizing events-based stuff: getting teams of people enthusiastic about things [Ant’s cinema-centric events are the stuff of legend in New Zealand]. And I think that really helps when you get a team around you. Plus, I had zero arrogance because I didn’t know what the fuck I was doing. Kind of. I knew what I wanted but also had a lot of pressure I put on myself. So I felt like I had a really great support team that were there for me and once I knew that, my confidence just went straight up.
Tumblr media
It’s clear from the films you’ve produced that you love movies that push the boundaries. Have you drawn any conclusions about how far you can push that kind of stuff? AT: I wanted a film that was pretty accessible at the end of the day. And I also knew that this had a decent budget for the type of film, more than I had been used to for some other things, so there was a responsibility that we’ve got to reach an audience. And it’s hard. But I also didn’t want to alienate the audience that I think would really like it. So it’s right on that fine line.
I don’t feel like it fits totally within [my produced works], like there’s elements of it in the previous producer stuff but I honestly feel like when I was watching it that there’s not… it takes a while. This is slow burn, man. I think it rolls out at just the right pace for when things happen. Like it’s building and building and then when things snap it starts to unravel quickly.
Saban has acquired ‘Come To Daddy’ for distribution; the film will have a US cinema release. Upcoming festival screenings include: Sydney Film Festival, Australia, June; Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, Korea, June–July; Fantasia Film Festival, Quebec, July–August.
Ant has created a list of films that inspired him in the making of his movie, which you can see here. Stay tuned for another, more personal list coming soon. Comments have been edited for clarity and length.

✰ write eleven questions of your own
✰ tag eleven people
Let us begin shall we?
1. What’s your favorite scent?
Vanilla or rain. Both amazing
2.  Do you want/have any tattoos?
An Ace of Spades on my hand with the birth and death dates of my grandfather and Lemmy from Motörhead
3.  Most nostalgic game/book/song?
Ooooh. Tough one. Gonna go with Sly Cooper for game, Geronimo Stilton for book, and The Beautiful People by Marilyn Manson
4.  What’s your favourite flower/tree/plant ?
Marijuana. No explanation needed.
5.  What’s something you just can’t get enough of?
Metal music and the ocean
6. How do you usually spend your free time?
Rotting myself away behind my laptop, playstation or piano
7. What’s your favourite animal and why?
Hammerhead sharks. Ever since I was a little boy I was obsessed with the ocean, especially sharks and whales. I personally like the hammerhead the most since they look so unique in comparisment to the others species.
8. Do you like/want to have children? Why/Why not?
I would rather not. I don’t see myself to be fitting to watch over a child 24/7 for eighteen full years at least. I’d definitely be a horrible, forgetful father. (Also I do not want a child of my own blood at any cost)
9. Favourite movie/TV series?
Oh boy… Either Deathgasm, The Crow or Orca: The Killer Whale (1977)
10. Are you learning an instrument? If so, what instrument is it?
*agressively playing the recorder*
11. What’s your favourite genre of music? (other than metal/the usual)
Other than metal? Anything that involves the pipe organ or cello, really. Or orchestral/choir music :D
My questions:
1. What coutnry would you like to visit?
2. Who is your favourite musician?
3. Favourite mythological creature? Why?
4: Do you care about pigeons??? (this one is fucking important do not even dare ask me why.)
5: What’s your top three favourite colours?
6: Favourite instrument?

I wrote a big long thing abt why I don’t like Cabin in the Woods:
https://letterboxd.com/quelledommage/film/the-cabin-in-the-woods/
I had watched this film back when it first came out, and I wasn't particularly a fan. But it seemed like a lot of people liked it, so I put it in the back of my brain to rewatch sometime just to see if maybe I'd missed something when I first saw it. So I figured I'd do that now, as I'm gearin' up for the Halloween season.
Can't say it's particularly grown on me.
The Cabin in the Woods brands itself as a horror comedy that pokes fun at the slasher formula, but it feels less like it was made out of a genuine love for the genre, and more like its target audience is that person who spends their spare time editing TV Tropes. It makes clear reference to what makes a slasher a slasher, horror films in this vein that require a Final Girl, etc., but doesn't really bother to make the film enjoyable independent from this. Instead, it expects you to get "the joke" that the film is referencing typical conventions, and to think you're smart for recognizing that it's making fun of a pattern set up by movies other people have made.
This sets it apart from other films that use the genre's conventions for comedy, like films Wes Craven, Tobe Hooper, or Sam Raimi have done, or more contemporary efforts like Shaun of the Dead, Tucker and Dale vs. Evil, Deathgasm, and so on. These films may poke fun at the genre, but you can tell that it comes from a place of love, both for the genre and for filmmaking in general. Sure, there's a nod and a wink toward the formula, but that's never all that the film is going for. At the very very least these films have characters that you, the audience, feel for, which brings me to my next point...
None of these characters are particularly compelling. Which is unfortunate, when they're what's meant to be pulling the story along. There's one point where one of the office workers says "So strange, I'm actually rooting for this girl. She's got so much heart." But frankly, I felt the opposite way. Our Final Girl was woefully underdeveloped, just like, uh, every other one of her friends, and I just couldn't find it in me to want to root for her. I just wanted all the college kids dead so I wouldn't have to deal with this movie sucking its own dick for much longer. I guess you could argue that this bit in the film was just kind of a fake-out, a setup for another joke where said office guy interrupts himself just when it seems like he's gonna say somethin' heartfelt, but that doesn't change the fact that the Final Girl is just. None of the things you want in a Final Girl. I could give a dozen examples of Final Girls in other slashers that are likable and compelling, but that's beside the point that this film doesn't stand up on its own, if you take out the fact that it's meant to be propped up on the genre's expectations. It has an uninteresting, uncompelling protagonist who the audience isn't all that invested in.
And not just her, but none of her friends are compelling, or even likable. All their characterization amounts to is just their respective tropes with next to no nuance. Of course one could argue that that's the joke, that's the point, etc., they're just meant to be representations of characters in cheesy movies, but consider: how clever is it to use traditionally unsucessful story elements for a joke if their usage is still unsucessful? There's a brief setup of the characters' "real" personalities at the beginning, but there isn't quite enough for the audience to really recognize that the trope-y characters they play aren't "themselves", that this is an inherently odd way for these supposedly "real" people to act. These characters aren't much different than what you'd find in one of the Scary Movie franchise films, parodies of tropes the audience is meant to see as "just tropes", but somehow the screenwriters have convinced their audience that they're watching something that's actually really clever.
The one "character" I kind of enjoyed was the leader zombie hillbilly, if only because I quite like the concept of a killer using a bear trap like a kinda grappling hook thing. I'd have probably really enjoyed a film that was meant to be sort of a slasher throwback with that as the main villain, but when we have to be cutting back and forth from the office, he feels rather underutilized.
I'll also concede that there were a couple jokes that made me laugh, but almost none of them were anything that came out of a character's mouth. Maybe I've just been spoiled with the excellent physical humor that's come out of other horror comedies, but whenever a character tried to say something quippy I couldn't help but cringe a bit and hope they shut up soon.
I guess that's all I have to say. I don't really understand how people consider this film "smart" when it can't get the audience emotionally invested in what happens, and neither the ending nor much of the action felt particularly satisfying. This film quite likes the idea of itself, but I have to wonder if any fans enjoy it because they love the genre, or if they just like feeling smarter than the genre.

Deathgasm (2015)
Director: Jason Lei Howden
I feel as if Deathgasm pays homage to Trick or Treat (From 1986, not to be confused with Trick ‘r Treat from 2007) and the classic I’m sure many of you have seen Evil Dead. Being a huge fan of metal and horror movies myself, I always find it entertaining when the 2 emerge, my favorite example being the soundtrack for Dario Argento’s Phenomena.
In Deathgasm, an outcast metalhead named Brodie is forced to move in with his Uncle after his widow mom is institutionalized in a mental hospital for giving a blow job to a mall Santa Claus. His Uncle and Aunt are crazy religious and his cousin is the typical douche bag jock bully you see in almost every movie where the main characters are in high school. So of course, being a metalhead in a Christian household, there is conflict. At his new school, and stop me if you’ve heard this one before, nearly everyone considers him a freak and decides not to associate with him and is subject to bullying from his cousin David and a friend of his (whose name is not mentioned). The only 2 individuals who accept Brodie are 2 “nerds” named Dion and Giles who are super into dorky role-playing games.
On the way home from school one day, he checks out a local record store where he meets his new friend and partner in mayhem, Zakk. Considering Brodie “plays” (you’ll know why this is in quotation marks when you watch it) guitar and Zakk plays bass, they form a death/black metal band called DEATHGASM with Dion on keys (strange for a black metal band, but whatever) and Giles on drums. The movie really picks up when one day Zakk and Brodie break into an abandoned house where Zakk expects Riki Daggers, member of the legendary metal band Haxansword, to be hiding out. Zakk is unknowing of why they’re breaking into the abandoned house until he sees in the hallway a Haxansword tour poster and a picture of Daggers himself. They then walk into a room with a wall of old amps and a mattress on the floor, on which Daggers is sleeping. Tucked in his arms is a Haxansword record (which earlier in the movie at the local record shop costs $213), in an attempt to steal the record, they snag it from his arms. As they’re walking out, Daggers awakes and attempts to attack Zakk and Brodie. I don’t want to give too much away, but basically they “talk it out”, Zakk and Brodie leave the premises with the record and head towards Brodie’s place. There, they discover that inside the record sleeve is a Rick Astley record, and also what appears to be sheet music. They read the music and play it, but little do they know, the music contains demonic incantations and thus the horror ensues.
That’s all I’ll give away about the plot, I left out some details but if you want to fill in the gaps, watch the movie yourself. Deathgasm is an all around fun movie but falls short in a couple of aspects. While there were humorous parts in the movie, a lot of the jokes just fell flat with me. If you are a true fan of metal, some of the dialogue in the film you may consider cringeworthy. There is a lot of stereotypical “ metalhead” things in this film if you know what I mean. I’m sick of the whole outcast in high school plot, I’ve seen it way too many times. But all flaws considering, I’d suggest this movie if you like just fun all out gore horror movies, you may even find some of the jokes funny. I’m looking forward to whatever Jason Lei Howden has is in store for us. Thanks for reading!

Lords of Chaos is probably the worst movie I've ever seen. And that's saying something because I've seen a lot of really horrible movies. But there's a huge difference between bad enjoyable movies like The Room or Sharknado and cringefests like this.
I assume that probably no actual Norwegian actor would want to do a movie like this, but it would have been nice if they'd gotten at least a few non Americans for it. Or at least someone who can fake an accent. And the acting itself and the way they were talking was just....it was pure cringe. Euronymous sounded like the Donald Trump of black metal. Yeah we get it, you "invented True Norwegian Black Metal". Got anything else to say?
As much as I hate to say it, the best actor in the whole movie was the dude who played Varg. I can't stand Varg for obvious reasons so just the fact that I typed this sentence at all makes me feel more rage than I should towards a movie. I should be calling him the Trump of black metal instead of Euronymous, because he was/still is.
To be honest with you it's a bit insulting, like they dumbed everything down just for us and then threw in a few bloody death scenes because I guess they figured, hey, metalheads will be watching this and that's all they really care about anyway right? Those scenes were important to the story but they felt really forced, even though they were supposed to be there, because everything else was just so off.
If you're a metalhead and want to watch a movie about it, watch Heavy Trip or Deathgasm, or some documentaries, hell, Spinal Tap! Anything else but this. Save yourself a couple hours.
