The Exhibitors Herald, June 1926
The first of the deluxe presentations was at the Forrest theatre, Philadelphia, Thursday evening. The audience was composed largely of members of the Advertising Clubs of the World, which was holding an international convention in the Quaker City, and the members of the Poor Richard Club. There were also present a large turnout of society, official and judicial life of Philadelphia. The other audience, which included Mrs. Coolidge, members of the diplomatic corps and Washington newspapermen, as guests of the National Press club, viewed the picture at a special screening Friday night at Poli’s theatre in Washington. General W. W. Atterbury; Senator-elect [and notorious political boss] Wm. S. Vare; Senator [and law professor] George W. Pepper; Lieut. Commander Geo. B. Wilson, U. S. Navy [not to be confused with the character from the Great Gatsby] ; Mrs. Barclay Warburton [civil rights supporter and journalist] ; Major Norman MacLeod; E. T. Stottsbury; Paul Thompson; Alexander Van Rensselaer; Mrs. Charlemagne Tower; Dr. H. J. Tily [department story owner, mason] ; Mr. and Mrs. Theodore W. Reath; Frank Smith; Mr. and Mrs. Jos. N. while i understand the draw of synths choosing names similar to their designations i simply cannot agree. especially if a synth forgoes the railroad mindwipe i cannot see them choosing a name similar to the barcode ass title they were given.
also im just generally obsessed with synths naming themselves after concepts or flowers or objects they connect to/relate to. almost every synth you meet in game has such a unique name that theyve chosen for themselves, theres only a few minor characters that come to mind that chose a more "normal" name (like cole or victoria)

26 & 27 for Lilah, 47 & 48 for teddy :]
Delilah
26. How do they come off to others? What first impression do they usually make? Scary and cold or warm and sexy/inviting, dependent on who you are and what she wants from you. She comes off as confident to any and all.
27. Do they prefer to travel alone or with company? Who have they traveled with if any? Current companion if any? Definitely alone, though she doesn’t do much traveling. Desdemona always pairs her with Deacon when she has to run for the Railroad, though she “resents” it (enemies to lovers, you know how it is). She prefers Drummer Boy’s company because he’s quiet, polite (ie just the right amount of snarky), and does what she says.
Teddy
47. What’s their favorite radio station and song? (post-apocalypse) He’s partial to Mojave Music Radio, but he listens to Radio New Vegas on occasion (he doesn’t like hearing the news bc hes usually on it lol). He named his pet fire gecko after Big Iron by Marty Robbins, but his favorite is either Love Me As Though There Was No Tomorrow by Nat King Cole or Heartaches by the Number by Guy Mitchell
48. What’s their favorite post-apocalyptic food? Are they a picky eater? Do they know how to cook? My beloved boy would eat dirt if he thought it would sustain him. He knows it wouldn’t, of course, but he’s absolutely not a picky eater. He likes bighorner and radstag (ik they’re not in nv shhhhh big boi like meat), and he loves agave. He’s also a great cook because he’s always had to be. Mf could whip up a pretty tasty dish over a campfire even without much to work with.

A Non-Exhaustive List of Real-Life Train References in Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks
A disclaimer before we get started here: this list is by no means definitive. There’s always a chance that something slips past me, so there’s a possibility that I’ll be editing this post from time to time. I should also note that as much as I love LoZ, I’m coming at this from the perspective of a railfan for a change, and especially as someone with extensive knowledge of steam locomotives, which is particularly relevant to this game. With that said, let’s jump into this!
Tumblr media
This post will be under a cut due to potential length and potential future edits, as well.
Character Naming Conventions
The most obvious references in the game come from characters’ names, but they do need some explaining in places. In the English version of the game, names like Anjean (Engine), Byrne (Burn), and Cole (Coal) need no explanation, but others are less obvious - and in Japanese, they require some knowledge of Japanese steam locomotives.
Link and Zelda are, of course, Link and Zelda. Nothing new there. The side characters, however, often have puns for names. The Lokomo, the native population, all have train-themed names, as you’d expect from a group of people whose name is derived from the word ‘locomotive.’ Anjean and Byrne are mentioned above, but you also encounter:
Gage: a railroad’s width is referred to as its gauge. Standard gauge, used in most of the world today, has the rails 4 feet 8.5 inches (1,435 mm) apart. Certain countries, including Russia, use their own gauges. Gauge can also refer to the sizes of model railroad sets - HO and O are the most commonly used model train gauges in the United States, for example.
Steem: this one’s obvious, so I don’t think I need to elaborate on how steam locomotives work for now.
Carben: the primary element in coal, the most common fuel for steam locomotives, is carbon.
Embrose: a reference to embers; fuel is burned in the locomotive’s firebox to boil the water and produce steam.
Rael: another obvious one - a pun on ‘rail.’
And that’s not all - our little foamer friend Ferrus has a name derived from the Latin word for ‘iron.’ This naming pun appears in multiple languages - in Japanese his name is Tetsuo.
A few puns only make sense in Japanese. Alfonzo’s name in Japanese is Shirokuni, which doesn’t look like much to people who don’t know about Japanese railroad history. But if you break it down as “shi-roku-ni,” you might notice that it can be read C62 (in this case reading ‘shi’ as ‘C’ and not ‘4′). The C62 was a class of 4-6-4 Hudsons that are popular in Japan to this day, being the basis of the locomotive in Galaxy Express 999. The class also inspired the brothers who founded Hudson Soft to name their company, as they both were fans of the locomotive.
Tumblr media
Another one that only makes sense if you know Japanese railway history is Byrne’s name being Diigo. This is a reference to the wildly popular D51 class of locomotives, 2-8-2 Mikados that were designed by Hideo Shima, who was later the driving force behind the creation of the Shinkansen. (Shima actually also designed the C62, described above.) If you watch Thomas and Friends, there’s a chance you’ve seen a D51...
Tumblr media
...because that’s Hiro’s class.
Tumblr media
Cole gets one of these, too, with his Japanese name being Kimaroki, a very specific layout of a locomotive and cars involving snowplows.
Lastly, we have the one that I’m personally most invested in, because it involves one of my favorite locomotives in the entire world. But this does involve spoilers for the endgame, so be careful reading from this point forward.
The villains in Spirit Tracks are trying to summon a demon named Malladus back to life, and to do this, they’ve separated Zelda’s spirit from her body so Malladus can possess her body. It goes badly, and the final fight ends up being Link and Zelda against Malladus - who, once separated from Zelda’s body, has possessed Cole’s body instead. Link and Zelda ultimately defeat Malladus together and restore peace to the realm. So what’s so delightful about this to me? We’re going to go back to July 3, 1938 for a moment.
On July 3, 1938, a 61-year-old grandfather named Joe Duddington opened up the throttle of an A4 Pacific (4-6-2) in England. With him in the cab was his fireman, Tommy Bray, and an inspector from the London and North Eastern Railway named S. Jenkins (I’ve seen his name listed as both Sam and Sid). This was mostly a normal run, but the locomotive, Mallard, was allegedly doing a brake test that day, so a dynamometer car was attached to the train to keep an eye on things.
The crew in the cab knew better. They had orders from Sir Nigel Gresley, who designed Mallard and the other A4s. They were going to try to take the speed record for steam traction that day. There were some interruptions, including construction that slowed them down before their buildup point, but they eventually hit a location called Stoke Bank and Mallard shot downwards towards Kings Cross in London; in Duddington’s own words, she “jumped to it like a live thing.” The speedometer crept up bit by bit, soon surpassing the English steam speed record of 114 mph set by the rival LMS, but Mallard was chomping at the bit and hungry for more and Duddington let her go, encouraging her with a “Come on, old girl, we can do better than this!”
She did far better than that, eclipsing the 124 mph record set in Germany by clocking 126 mph for a quarter mile. Mallard’s big-end cylinder failed not long afterwards, signaled by an aniseed stink bomb the crew had planted on her beforehand, and she was slowed down and taken back to Doncaster for repairs, but not before this photo was taken:
Tumblr media
(L-R: Tommy Bray, Joe Duddington, S. Jenkins, other LNER staff; Mallard is behind them)
Mallard’s record is the official one, although other claims are out there, because Mallard was officially recorded and documented. Today her record still stands, as it was set close enough to the end of the steam era that most railroads were switching over to cheaper diesel and electric options.
Anyway, long explanation aside, Malladus was quite obviously and deliberately named after Mallard herself - in non-American releases, Malladus is straight-up called Mallard. They even made Malladus blue - Malladus’s non-corporeal form looks like this:
Tumblr media
Compare to Mallard herself:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mallard is a much darker blue, but it does make you think.
In-Game Controls
Now we get to the part where I actually talk about steam locomotives in general and how they work, and how this ties into the gameplay of Spirit Tracks. Now, as some of you are aware, I’ve driven a steam locomotive exactly once in my life so far, but I’m fully planning on getting certified to drive them regularly as a volunteer thing in the future as soon as I can arrange that because I took to it like a fish takes to water.
Link’s locomotives have a driving system more similar to a car, which is definitely weird to me as someone who knows how to drive a steam locomotive:
Tumblr media
(Pictured: Alfonzo reminding Link to read his iron)
Link has very simple controls to work with - really, they combined the throttle with the Johnson bar (yes, the reversing lever is sometimes called that, I know it sounds dirty). He has four settings - backwards, which can be used as an emergency brake, the regular brake, forwards, and forwards at high speed (highballing). And of course, he has the whistle cord to blow the whistle with! These locomotives are pretty bare-bones (I don’t even know how they run since there’s no visible fuel source; let’s say it’s magic because this is Zelda), and Link is able to operate them without a fireman in the cab with him. In reality, it’s a bit more complicated than that...
I drove a locomotive built in 1924, Strasburg #90. 90, being a more modern steam locomotive than what Link has access to, has her controls separated out instead of being on one gearshift like a car. To make 90 move forward, I first had to release a “parking brake,” set the Johnson bar to the forward position, release the regular brake, and finally open up the throttle. Before opening the throttle, I also had to indicate that I was moving, which I did by turning her bell on and blowing the whistle twice - two short whistle blasts told everyone I was driving forward. Once I had her moving, I had to keep making small adjustments to the throttle (only a notch or two at a time) to keep her at a steady speed.
Tumblr media
(A photo of Strasburg #90 I took on the day I drove her, 3/26/22.)
Spirit Tracks is not a realistic train simulator, and it was never meant to be one - it’s a Zelda game, not Trainz. Since it was a DS game the controls had to be simplified as much as possible, and making it similar to the controls of a car, something far more people will encounter in their lifetime and learn to operate, makes it pretty easy to use for most players. What I do like is that you have to navigate rail traffic and pay attention to signs and signals, just like in real life.
That said, Link is absolutely dressed the part.
Tumblr media
(screenshot from here; this is how he appears in Smash Ultimate)
There’s actually a lot of things right with Link’s engineer uniform. He has thick gloves and closed-toe shoes to keep himself safe when working, and although generally you want to wear long sleeves it’s not uncommon to see engineers and firemen roll their sleeves up because it gets warm in the cab. The only thing he’s missing is a pair of safety goggles (I’d have added them on the cap if I was his character designer for this game). The day I drove 90, I was dressed like this:
Tumblr media
(Pictured: the author in a pair of overalls that are a couple of sizes too big, with her driving gloves in her pockets, as she poses by the drive wheels of a Pennsylvania Railroad K4 Pacific to show how much taller than her they are. The Submas badge is on her engineer hat.)
I’m not sure why they gave Link a v-neck for the uniform shirt, but whatever, he’s Link and can pull off literally any outfit so it doesn’t matter. There’s never been a Link that doesn’t look good in whatever he wears. That’s part of being Link.
Everyone Who Likes Trains Has Met Someone Like Ferrus
Maybe you even are Ferrus, who knows.
I’ve enjoyed trains my entire life, and I’ve spent a lot of time on and around them. Like most people who enjoy trains, I like photographing them and railroad infrastructure, as well as trying to track down my favorite locomotives when I can (there’s one NJT locomotive I keep an eye on because I’m hoping to push to get it preserved when its retirement comes). And of course, I’ve now begun dedicating my spare time to figuring out how to become fully qualified to operate steam locomotives, because my one time on the throttle was the best moment of my life.
Anyway, when you’re in this hobby, you meet people like Ferrus.
Tumblr media
Ferrus calls himself a “trainiac” (in real life we say “railfan,” at least in the United States). What makes Ferrus one of “those” railfans is that despite not having any driving experience he somehow has instructions that he has made up himself about doing passenger service himself, which he gives to Link...who has trained professionally to be an engineer. In his defense, these rules are correct, but in general it’s not cool to tell someone who’s actually trained in a field how to do their job. Luckily, Ferrus doesn’t seem to do anything more egregious than that - he doesn’t trespass on the rails, for one.
Ferrus’s main hobby, like many railfans, is photography, and he’s nearly always seen with his camera photographing trains. He also hero-worships Alfonzo and goes into a blue screen of death when Alfonzo denies being a legendary engineer and instead claims to be a legendary swordsman (i.e. Alfonzo is more proud of his swordsmanship than his driving). He keeps asking Link to ferry him about from one location to the next so he can continue his railfan activities, all the while wearing a replica uniform even though he doesn’t actually work as an engineer.
Tumblr media
Ferrus reminds me of a lot of railfans I’ve seen and met - there are certainly some out there that act like they know more than even the actual rail staff, and whilst they might know more history, they’re not the ones operating the train and need to take a step back when it comes to that. The only reason I can talk about operating steam locomotives the way I do now is because I’ve done it once, and that was under engineer supervision. I’ve never operated one solo and I’m by no means an expert engineer or anything, as much as I want to be one and am planning to work on that certification in the future. But Ferrus’s passion does come in handy for Link in the game, because his notes on how to use the spacetime gates in-game are also somewhat correct, including a deduction on how to activate them that isn’t too far off from the in-game solution.
This Game Has A Stamp Rally?
Yes, yes it does. Stamp rallies are a common feature on railroads in Japan, and they encourage you to visit each station on the line and mark that you were there. You get a stamp book, and at each station you hop off the train, mark your stamp, and hop back on. It gives you a souvenir of your trip, and the railroad gets more revenue because people are visiting more stations, so everyone wins.
If you’re a Pokemon fan and like trains, you may have seen a stamp rally before - in the anime, there’s an episode where the Battle Subway implements one, with the reward for completion being a battle against the participant’s choice of either Ingo or Emmet. Cilan proceeds to go bonkers and do it, and ultimately due to a number of circumstances he and Ash end up having a Multi Battle against Submas and get curb-stomped because a) it’s Submas and b) Cilan somehow forgot electricity could be conducted by the metal bars in the subway car and Emmet and Eelektross didn’t forget.
Tumblr media
(Pictured: Cilan, a green-haired triplet who’s actually a lot like Ferrus in terms of his interest in trains, holds up a blank stamp sheet/booklet for a stamp rally.)
In Spirit Tracks, Niko asks Link to fill out his stamp book for him at each location, as he’s rather old and traveling is difficult for him at this point in his life. Link obliges and receives clothes as a reward, as is usual for this sort of sidequest. The fact that they put this in the game is a nice little touch for Japanese railfans who would certainly recognize it, and it’s a cool way to introduce international railfans - and gamers - to the concept. Stamp rallies exist outside of railroad contexts, of course, but there’s definitely an association there!
Is there anything else you want to talk about?
I’m sure there will be, but for now, this is a good stopping point because I’ve been working on this post for several days. If there’s anything you think I should add, message me! I’ll be happy to edit this post - I’ve put it under a cut so it can be edited at any time!

Quote
Dick smiled when he mentioned the next NCO. “And then there was Floyd Talbert. He had it all. We developed a personal friendship dating back to Toccoa. He was athletic and dedicated. You knew if your life were on the line, he would come through. At Toccoa, he was in 3rd Platoon, not mine. On the march to Atlanta, Talbert was slugging along with a machine gun. Behind him was Walter Gordon, who was supposed to carry the gun. I can still see the determination on Talbert’s face. I promoted him to sergeant in Normandy. During the counterattack at Carentan, he held the right flank along the railroad. After Normandy, I promoted him to platoon sergeant when Carwood Lipton took over as company first sergeant. When Lipton received a battlefield commission later in the war, Talbert became first sergeant. He couldn’t work with Captain Speirs—you will have to read his letter to see why he turned in his stripes. Talbert claimed that he was always comparing Speirs to me. We simply had different leadership styles, but I guess I should be flattered. I wrote to DeEtta about Talbert after the war. I told her that I was going deer hunting with an old sergeant of mine from Easy Company. That sergeant was Talbert. It wasn’t the hunt as much as I just enjoyed being around this guy. We didn’t have to talk to enjoy each other’s company, nor did we have to talk in combat or during a battle. A word or two, or a wave of the hand, and we knew precisely what the other guy was thinking. That makes working just lovely. Of the enlisted soldiers in E Company, Talbert is the only one whom I would classify as a friend. These are the ones you always remember. The men who do their best, you never forget them.”

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad: Chief Mankiller's Lost Treasure (Tales from the Magic Kingdom)
I’ll never forget that day: the day a strange man in an even stranger suit came up to me while I was at work.
“Good afternoon officer.” He greeted.
“Can I help you?” I asked.
“Well yes, I was thinking you could.” He said. “I heard you used to work on the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad.”
“Yeah, I did.” I said. “Now can I help you with a law enforcement matter?”
“No, you seem to have law enforcement around here covered.” He said.
“Then please be on your way.” I said.
“You sure?” He asked before tossing a gold nugget at my feet.
“Sir, if you are attempting to bribe…”
“Oh no, no bribes.” He said. “Just a gift. And there’s more where that came from if you meet me for a drink after your shift ends.”
_________
Not many people still talked about the Big Thunder Mountain.
The Big Thunder Mountain used to be the heart of our town’s economy. At one point, half the men here, including myself, worked up there. Given that I was a half-deaf veteran of the Civil War (and the losing side no less), mining was just about the best thing I could do for myself, and for a while, it was pretty good living. But overtime, the mine just stopped producing gold. About ten years ago, the final nail of the mine’s coffin was planted when a flash flood destroyed most of the track and killed a good portion of the miners. The owners simply decided to cut their losses and close the mine completely, and the whole town suffered as a result. Ten years later, and I’m one of the mine’s few workers in town who didn’t leave.
I wanted to just forget that part of my life; but still, I was too curious not to meet the fellow at the saloon.
When I saw him sitting at a table, drinking beer and smoking a pipe, I walked up to him and bluntly asked “What do you want?”
“My name’s Jonathan Cole.” He said. “And you’re Abraham Schneider, I take it.”
“Yes.” I answered. “Now, what do you want?”
“I believe there’s still treasure in the Big Thunder Mountain.” He said. “And I want you to help me find it.”
“What makes you so confident?” I asked.
“Oh, I have my sources.” He said. “Listen, help me find what I’m looking for, and I’ll give you rewards beyond what you’d ever make in this craphole of a town.”
He could tell I was hesitant.
“Look, it’s a completely victimless crime.” He continued. “The land owners have long abandoned the mine, they don’t even know what’s down there. And even if they did, they wouldn’t know where to look for it. You have literally nothing to lose and everything to gain. So, what’s it gonna be?”
_________
The next day, we left. I had a Deputy cover for me, and I went to join Jonathan at the entrance to the mine.
“Who’s all these folks?” I asked as I pointed to three men who were there to join us.
“Oh, they’re just here for protection.” He explained. “Never know what can happen in these old mines.”
“Very well.” I said. I also had a handgun concealed under my coat. “Do you have the map?”
He then handed me an old, faded, and crumbled up map. But still, I could tell exactly where their treasure was.
“Follow me.” I said as I lit a lantern.
______
Even though it had been years, I still remembered those catacombs by heart.
“Alright, here’s where the map is leading to.” I said, as we entered an empty, dead end chamber.
“You sure?” Cole asked.
“Positive.”
“Alrighty then.” Cole said before pulling a bottle out of his jacket.
“You really gonna get a drink right now?”
“Oh, this is no drink.” He said. “This here is nitroglycerin.”
“You serious?” I asked. “You telling me that you’ve been carrying nitroglycerin this entire time? You could’ve blown us sky high.”
“Calm down, I know what I’m doing.” He said. “Now everyone get out of this room, unless you wanna die.”
_______
He set the bottle down near one of the cave walls, and once everyone had cleared out, he pulled his gun and shot the bottle. It caused an explosion that revealed that one part of the cave wall was actually hiding something behind it.
“Gentlemen, we have our riches.” Cole said as he entered a room filled with Native American artifacts.
“Wait, I thought you said this had gold.”
“I said it had treasure.” He explained. “And it does. The lost treasure of Chief Mankiller, a Native American war chief who stashed his treasure in this mountain right before his last battle with settlers. And we get to split it four ways.”
“I’m sorry, four ways?” I asked.
“Oh yeah, that’s the best part. We’re done with you.” Cole said before drawing his gun and firing at me.
_______
Thankfully, the bullet only grazed me. Another inch or so, and I’d have been a goner, but all I got in that cave was a flesh wound.
But still, I had to play dead. It was one versus four, there’s no way I could've won in a fair fight. Luckily, it only took them a minute or so to grab the treasure and be on their way.
Once they were gone, I knew I needed to make a plan. I couldn’t beat them all at once. But then, I remembered that just around the corner, there was something I could use.
I even checked the railroad tracks; they were all in good enough shape. And then, I found her, the train I used to operate back when the mine was open. There was even charcoal left behind in the engine.
“Perfect.” I said to myself as I pulled a match out of my coat and tossed it in the engine. From there, all I had to do was wait for her to start back up and ride her again.
________
I caught up to them just moments before they were going to exit the mountain.
At first, they were stunned; they heard the train coming, but were dumbfounded as to who was riding it or how it even got started at all.
I stopped the train right at the mouth of the cave. If they wanted to leave, they were gonna have to go through me, and I wasn’t gonna let them.
One of them fired at me. He missed and hit the side of the train. I returned fire and hit him right in the forehead.
Cole began running away while his friends opened fire. It would’ve been difficult to outshoot both at once with just a handgun, but then I remembered the shotgun I always kept hidden underneath the train car’s floor.
I then fired through a gap in the train's outer metal lining, and killed both of them.
Then, I turned to Cole. Only bad part about trains is that they can’t go backwards, so I had no choice but to pursue on foot.
I lost him when he turned a corner and went down one of a handful of tunnels. And then, from wherever he was hiding, he fired at me, and I was forced to take cover against one of the cave walls.
“Thanks for doing me a favor back there.” Cole said. “Now I don’t have to split the treasure four ways.”
He fired at me again, and this time, I saw the flash of his gun; I knew where he was hiding.
After he took his next shot, I immediately jumped out of cover, turned, and fired. Killed him with one shot.
_________
Turns out Cole was right; I did end up a rich man that day. All I had to do was ride a few days to Houston, find the right antiques broker, and then I never had to look back at the Big Thunder Mountain ever again.

@mattressdemon i’ve been thinking about this nonstop. as i said, cyrus is a pretty direct, honest, heart on his sleeve kind of person, particularly with people he loves. what WOULD he be scared to share with his family, to whom he has already given so much?
and then i remembered one of the act 1 arishok conversations where he asks hawke how they deal with kirkwall’s chaos. cyrus obviously chooses “i want to make it better,” and the arishok responds [along the lines of] “how will you know when you have made things better?”
and that sits with cyrus!! forever!!!! how do you know when you’ve done enough? and, worse, what comes after? when you’ve defined your whole life around the purpose of Making It Better, who are you when the last battle has been fought and won? but to admit that he has such questions is to invite doubt, to waver from his purpose. i think a little doubt/wavering/not being so single-heartedly committed to his purpose would be VERY welcome for his loved ones, but it’s unthinkable for him personally, so he doesn’t talk about it.
also i as cyrus’ creator/writer/god struggled with conceptualizing him in act 1 because bioware reaaaaally railroads you into the expedition & the mercenary work & odd jobs that precede it. i’ve had to think a lot about WHY cyrus would do any of it. wanting to provide for his family is FINE as a motivation but also feels at odds with the act’s emphasis on selfish profit acquisition, in a way that the dialogue wheel doesn’t always reflect even for a diplomatic hawke.
but i like the idea of that tension being a part of his character arc too: struggling in act 1 with a sense of purposelessness and not being able to help people in the way he wants to or was able to in lothering. to that end, i think there are  some moments in act 1 when he briefly entertains trying to join the qun to have an answer to that question. he views this as a fundamentally selfish thought, since it would mean abandoning leandra & bethany, but it crosses his mind at least once. probably after sister petrice sets him up.
anyway. enjoy some fake banter on the subject.
Cole: “How will you know when you have made things better?”
Cyrus: Hmm?
Cole: The city hurts. Loud, segmented, parts of a ceramic glued back together wrong, each sliver screaming through time and slick with blood. You want to put it back together right, but how do you know where to begin when their stomachs are growling just as loud? Reaching for certainty, clarity, ironclad and grey, to be able to see straight through the chaos.
Varric: Kid, how about we leave the ancient history in the dust, hm?
Cole: It’s not ancient. It’s right there, when the battle is over, when he lowers his shield and sheathes his sword. Each death is a question: is it enough?
Cyrus, angrily: Who cares?
Cole: You do.

The Kennesaw House
The Kennesaw House in Marietta, Georgia is a historic, three story building located in the heart of Marietta in Cobb County. It is the home of the Marietta Museum of history, located on the second and third floors of the 19th century foundation. It is also the center of plethora of reports of haunting and other paranormal activities.
Built in 1845 adjacent to the railroad depot, the Kennesaw House was originally assembled as a warehouse to store cotton, but was soon converted to a large restaurant due to its prime location, welcoming passengers who traveled in on the railroad.
In 1855, it was known as the Fletcher House after being purchased by a Dix Fletcher and opened as an Inn. Now owned by a sympathizer of the Union army, Fletcher House became a haven for Yankee spies and soldiers. The “Great Locomotive Chase” started out in what is now known as the Kennesaw House when James Andrews, along with a group of Union spies, conspired to hijack a train termed the “General” in April of 1862.
As the Civil War raged through Georgia, the Fletcher House was somewhat forcibly turned into a makeshift hospital and morgue, which likely contributes to the excess of ghostly activity surrounding the famed Marietta building.
General Sherman of the Union army made his way through the town near the end of the Civil War, burning down just about every structure that would take flame. The Fletcher House was spared, however, since Dix Fletcher was a mason, and Henry Cole, his son-in-law, a Yankee spy.
The building did not go unscathed. Once housing four stories, the flames of nearby burning building licked the rooftop of the house and all but destroyed the fourth floor. Fletcher finished repairs, eliminating the fourth story altogether, in 1867 and reopened the hotel under the new name Kennesaw House.
Most stories stem from those visiting the Marietta Museum of History. Some encounters are said to take place on the elevator, while others do not take effect until the visitor(s) arrives on the second or third floor.
Claims state that tourists have been welcomed to the museum just as the elevator doors opened by a grim, crowded hospital room, overflowing with injured and dying soldiers. The screams and cries of the wounded were overwhelming as there was little if any anesthesia to assist in the multiple amputations that took place in those days to prevent gangrene from setting in, or to remove an already acclimated case of the disease.
There have been countless similar tales of an old surgeon dressed in Civil War regalia riding the elevator.
Children have often claimed to see a lady in a pink trimmed old-fashioned dress. Others have seen the same apparition, but she seems to appear mostly to younger visitors. Many of the children who share a similar story have sworn it is the same lady from one of the pictures in the Kennesaw House – that of Mrs. Fletcher.
The Kennesaw House underwent various changes throughout the last century or so. Its hotel status was revoked in the 1920’s when the Kennesaw House was purchased to house a series of retail stores. It remained so until 1996 when the Marietta Museum of History took up residence on the second and third floors.

🌟 Jacob Jacob Jacob owo
Also Mamma Lane 🌟
🌟 Jacob Cromwell
Tumblr media
1) Jacob’s magic was very strong from a very early age. One of his first instances of underage magic was as a toddler when he attempted to summon a stuffed lion at the toy store over to him, only to accidentally yank down the entire shelf.
2) One of Jacob, Carewyn, and Lane’s favorite Christmas traditions when Carewyn was young was going Christmas caroling with some old ladies from the church down the road. Resident Tenor Jacob always did the opening solo for “Once in Royal David’s City,” which is one of his mother Lane’s favorites.
3) Jacob was dormmates with Gilderoy Lockhart. As one can expect, Jacob loathed Lockhart beyond reason, not just because he was an absolute moron with an ego the size of Mt. Fuji, but because he somehow was more popular romantically than Jacob was. More than a few times Jacob found out someone he crushed on was sweet on the more smiley, debonair, and yet throughly idiotic Lockhart.
4) Speaking of crushes, though, one person with an unreciprocated crush on Jacob was a much younger Gryffindor named Angelica Cole. She first started thinking Jacob was cute after seeing him effortlessly take down everyone at the Dueling Club, and started crushing seriously after overhearing him talk to Duncan Ashe about his little sister and how he’d never let anyone hurt her. (Good big brother! Family guy! Angelica saw that and went “🥰!”) Unfortunately Jacob was completely blind to her affections and overprotective!jealous!Duncan warded the much younger girl off before she could even think of sending Jacob any Valentines or love letters.
5) Funnily enough, another person romantically charmed by Jacob’s prodigy-level dueling talents was Merula. Watching him duel Carewyn for the first time brought the hearts to Merula’s eyes, which didn’t fade until she finally figured out as an adult how absolutely thick Jacob was when it came to dealing with other people.
6) Jacob’s best subject is Transfiguration. When he duels, he frequently will use Transfiguration spells to throw his opponents off, such as materializing snakes or flocks of birds out of thin air or Switching himself with objects so as to quasi-“teleport” around his opponent.
7) Like a stereotypically overprotective father, Jacob was noticeably aggressive with his sister Carewyn’s love interest, Orion, when he first encountered him. Even when Carewyn told him to quit it and Jacob determined Orion truly wasn’t a bad person, Jacob retains a lingering resentment toward Orion, simply because — like Bill — Orion knows Carewyn in ways he never could.
8) Jacob isn’t the biggest tea drinker. He’s much more into coffee and especially hot chocolate.
9) That being said, he is pretty good at mixing alcoholic drinks. Jacob learned a few tricks from Aberforth Dumbledore after pressing him enough, and even worked at the bar of the Three Broomsticks for a little while, around the time he finally earned his NEWTs and could start his life over.
10) The only class Jacob actively didn’t like at school was History of Magic. He thinks Dumbledore should’ve fired Binns decades ago and frequently crows about how much better Lane would teach the class.
🌟 Lane Cromwell
Tumblr media
1) Of her siblings, Lane was closest to Blaise largely by default, since he was closest to her in age, he would actively engage her in conversation, and he had the least interest in socializing with strangers at parties. Unfortunately Blaise’s open scorn for Muggles and tendency to railroad Lane when he disagreed with her made it so Lane greatly preferred talking to her Ravenclaw friends, whenever possible.
2) Lane is a cat person, through and through! She first co-parented a yellow cat named Pooh with her BFF Judy Castine at school, and then also was gifted a Siamese kitten named Cinderella (“Ella” for short) by her husband Evan. She also bought her daughter Carewyn a orange tabby cat for her to bring to school, who Carewyn named Mimi.
3) Lane’s room at the Cromwell manor had only one very tiny window in the far corner, which looked out toward the back gardens, framed by very thick, tall hedges. It made it so she had to light it with a lot of candles just to keep it bright enough to read. One of Lane’s favorite things about Ravenclaw Tower was all the natural light, and the number of windows is one of the first things Lane looks at, when it comes to buying a home.
4) Lane may be very soft-spoken, but her thoughts were always very clear to Charles, when he used his Legilimency. Lane’s thoughts were always much more complex and intellectual than any of her other siblings were.
5) Lane can’t conjure a corporeal Patronus, but if she could, hers would be a salmon, symbolic of wisdom and determination.
6) One of Lane’s quirks is how she will emotionally shut down when she loses her temper, rather than rage. Her cold, quiet, no-punches-pulled logic is almost more terrifying than her getting angry, and it’s the one time that she most resembles her father, Charles, who likewise goes very quiet, emotionless, and cruel when he gets really angry.
7) Perhaps sensing how much smarter Lane was than her other siblings, Charles and Marilyn Cromwell tried to arrange a marriage for her among the well-respected Urquart family, who have contacts in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement. One prominent member, Elphinstone Urquart, ironically enough was married to Minerva McGonagall.
8) Lane’s favorite musical artists include Judy Collins, Peter Paul and Mary, and Simon and Garfunkel.
9) Lane’s worst subject at school was Defense Against the Dark Arts. Lane’s best subjects involved less “flashy” magic like Herbology, Potions, and (of course!) History of Magic.
10) Lane’s vocal range is Second Alto, the lowest of Charles Cromwell’s daughters. Charles always enjoyed whenever his children would sing in harmony for him, but Lane’s favorite people to sing with are (naturally) Jacob and Carewyn.
