Adventures of Sonic The Hedgehog - The Little Merhog (Screenshots & Review)

Despite what the episode name is clearly spoofing, this isn't a story about a young girl running off to marry some dweeb she just met who eats her friends, but is thankfully instead another undersea adventure episode!

The story starts with...oh, wait. Maybe this is closer to The Little mermaid than I thought. * mr plinkett voice* oh no.

The little hair stubbles on Lt. Bananas exposed butt are a nice touch. 😉 😅 So.....Sonic and Tails are fishing, which implies that they're planning to physically maim and/or eat the same kinds of sea critters who end up saving their lives later and also seem to be friends with the lady they're about to meet. That's awkward.

Tails accidentally snags his fishing line on a merhog gal named Merna, who tells Sonic that her home is under attack by a Captain John Paul Memo (and his assistant, Lt. Bananas) . Sonic begins flirting with her, which she is surprisingly okay with as Sonic and Tails are clearly carrying fishing poles. Either she doesn't know what fishing is, or she's as messed up as Ariel....

Tails ends this awkward moment by showing that he has produced scuba suits for him and Sonic, which they can use to safely deep dive underwater to help the merhog folks. The scene transitions to the Mertopia, home of the merhogs, and the inside of Captain Memos ship. It's interesting in this episode that Captain Memo is the primary antagonist for quite a while, as opposed to the usual Robotnik. He's also a pretty funny villain, with the odd personality quirk of constantly having his assistant - he is pantsless for some reason - write down notes for him,even when the two of them are in danger!

Captain Memo is planning to bulldoze the homes of all the merfolks and replace them with condos that he will charge folks to live in. Darn these old 90s cartoons, with their liberal woke anti-capitalist politics!!1 (that's sarcasm, by the way). Sonic, Tails and Merna try to fight his octopus ship, but it's big tentacles quickly grab hold of them. Merna reveals her "Aquaman" powers - she can communicate with all the other species of ocean dwelling critters, and calls to them for help! This is why I found it messed up that she seemed fine with Sonic and tails fishing...

Zapped in the dick! Merna is able to summon a pair of electric eels to zap the heck out of Captain Memo's ship - we even see inside that he is getting electrocuted right in the dick! This lets our heroes escape the tentacles, but Sonic finds he is not able to cut through the ships hull, so they have to retreat into Mertopia. Merna introduces Sonic to the queen, who looks more human than merhog but maybe her strange facial deformities are why she was deemed queen? *shrugs* The conversation between everyone is cut short when Memo starts breaking into the cave, but thankfully Sonic and Tails get an idea on how they can still help save the little kingdom.

The ships hull is so tough it gives Sonic butthole eyes!

Big gal! She doesn't look very hedgehog-like though....

The scene cuts to Scratch and Grounder, who are hard at work cleaning the kitchen. One of the nice things in this episode is that these two get a good amount of screen time and cuteness, especially little Grounder. 🙂 Poor Grounder is trying to deal with a lasagna fridge monster when Sonic and Tails show up with faked pizza delivery order (and did I mention that the pizza have anchovies on it, which is really messed up as they now KNOW they’re killing Merna’s friends!). They use this opportunity to tell Scratch and Grounder that Memo is trying to take over the entirety of Mobius’ oceans. The two badniks rush off to tell Robotnik the news, as Sonic and Tails wait to see how Robotnik will react.

Poor Grounder! Beware the lasagna fridge monster!

Yeeeah, look at Tails, he’s so cool with his 90s shades! (He does look pretty adorable in overalls, but he’s Tails, he probably looks cute no matter what!) When Robotnik gets the news, he does just as Sonic and Tails hoped he would - he becomes jealous that Memo is trying to take over a place he himself wants to invade, so he orders Scratch an Grounder to build him an attack sub. They do so, and the trio head out in their new sub to pick a fight with Memo. Th two blast at each-other for a while, until Sonic says just a little too loudly to his friends that it is was a trick, and Scratch and Grounder end up telling Robotnik. Because of this, Robotnik then makes a pact with Memo instead, and they team up to attack Sonic! But thanks to Merna's fish talkin' abilities, she's able to call on a big army of sea beasties to sink both the villains ships and save the day. She and Sonic share a kiss, and hopefully Sonic realizes that maybe eating the friends of the gal he just smooched on is something he shouldn't be trying to do.

Robotnik’s submarine looks very pleased with itself, like it just ate the tastiest burrito ever. 😃

In the Sonic Says segment, Sonic teaches Grounder not to play with matches "even if he thinks its safe". My friends and I played with matches and magnifying glasses as kids, and had quite a bit of fun, never burning ourselves or starting a house fire. However, I do acknowledge that there's a lot of dumbass motherfuckers in the world would probably would accidentally burn their own house down or incinerate their own asshole - so I think the more fair advice would be "if you're going to play with anything that can start a fire, do so with adult supervision and make sure you have a means to quickly put the fire out!".

While the beginning of this episode makes most of what Sonic and Tails do in it have a creepy context to it, it does have a fun villain in Memo, lots of cute Scratch and Grounder moments, and introduces a new location and new race of mobians, the merhogs (who seem to either be mostly or all female-coded). So, it's a pretty decent one, still.

Caught myself thinking about how much Post-SGW Archie and Sonic Forces had affected Sonic character design for the worst

#pre-sgw did have several oddballs #but it was INTERESTING #walt the wallaby had a different body type #and so did characters like rotor and dulcy #but then came the genesis wave and FUCKED THE DESIGNS ALL OVER #the fish characters PARTICULARLY piss me off in a personal level #like ok sure don't do them as merhog-styled #but GOD THEY'RE SO FUCKING BORING #queen angelica and captain striker particularly piss me off #WHY is the female anglerfish a typical skinny woman #WHY IS CAPTAIN STRIKER LIKE THAT. See the newest redesign for Exodius for the Auros AU, cause as always, he be getting one, with his cobalt merhog design being the most major change. And because he has 3 (4, I didn't want to draw his adult merhog form yet because I am still thinking about if it stays mostly the same or changes) canon designs with two shots of his main body without clothes too, I did not bother shading any of these, they are staying flat color on a gray background because my hand and I can only take so much XD But for once, I actually like his design a lot. I still have to work some kinks out, but those are more cause of me trying out something with my line-art again, though how he looks I like a lot. I hope you like his redesign as much as I do.

Since I don’t post much on Exodius and his story on Tumblr, have a quick summary:

Exodius is the prince of a Kingdom called Sheterra, son of Queen Calla, who in actuality is 70+ years old and yet looks around her early twenties. Before she looked this young, her husband had fled the kingdom because Calla got too old to produce an heir, and she suddenly vanished for 9 months, before returning slightly younger with a child.

Exodius is indeed her bio child, though was certainly not made through a regular pregnancy. He is also a hedgehog merhog hybrid, though his merhog genes activate late in his life.

Exodius deals for many years with being constantly ill because of a gem her mother brought back with her around the same time she brought him, but eventually, he finds his health and freedom by joining his best friend's soon turned lover Skeimar’s pirate crew (as well as committing some patricide). He goes on to marry Skeimar and become an avid researcher of alchemic magic, which leads to his body mutating in certain ways as he grows older.

He is one of the main protagonists in my story Two Sides of a Coin which is currently being rewritten over on DeviantArt, but I will share it here on Tumblr too, I am still just deciding if it will be just through a link, or different means.

Mer-Sonic learns how to project his voice, and that merfolk can also imitate any and all sounds they've heard before.

He starts using this to rickroll Eggman every chance he gets, among other things

XD XD XD Oh my goodness YES!!!

Aside from the obvious prank potential, he could also use this ability to be helpful! Imagine he mimics Eggman's voice and uses it to boss around the badniks in a battle, thus making it a lot easier for everyone to get to Eggman himself. Oh my goodness, it's like that one scene in Peter Pan where Peter mimcs Hook and starts bossing Smee around. XD

artovere: fuck my ass, mal really got to me with this one. i always thought there was an interesting dynamic to explore in giving the princess and the knight a shipping dynamic, but mal looked me in my stupid little face and said ‘we’re going to take over your entire brain now,’ AND BOY DID IT WORK. the dynamic of the healing and all-loving and all-loved princess with this revered and honored knight who is slowly losing his grip on his self, his sanity, his goals, nev looking at artorias losing these battles and knowing she cannot heal him, it really adds a deeper layer to thinks. throw in that they started out hopeful and young and both end up the villain of their own story, corrupted by their own aims. damn. damn i love this ship. thank u @abysstaken for my life.

flannevere: the one truly canon nev ship. perhaps my only canon nev ship. in item descriptions, nev left anor londo with this guy, becoming his wife and having at least a daughter with him. what kind of man must he have been to seduce the princess from her tower and legacy in canon? well, i figure he must have been a swell guy, especially on this page’s lore. between the poles of artorias’ fatal fall from grace and oceiros’ partnership rather than love, flann was the sweet spot and her hope. if she had stayed with him, her life might have been a happy one, but alas. duty comes first to my girl.

oceirovere: mmmm ok here’s where we get in shaky territory. i don’t really ship it, and i don’t think it was a romantic relationship. it was a business partnership, where nev could rule while oceiros dedicated himself to his studies so long as he served the divine family. in their final days together, it was an absolute shitshow. mal puts it as ‘oceiros the cucked king.’ but. the dynamic is so narratively rich building off of this, and the fact they had one another’s backs and shared interests up to the point nev fled. it’s a relationship, though not romantic and only once sexual, that i am very interested in working through and fleshing out.

finavere: gwynevere is bisexual and fina was her long term on and off. love and light, what better f/f dynamic is there among the divine? though they were not always together, and gwynevere practiced polyamory behind closed doors, keeping artorias as her secretive main partner... they had a deep affection and respect for one another. where most simply saw a deep and positive friendship, the pair were devoted to one another behind closed doors, in every way that matters in a relationship. cry about it, lautrec.

ciaranevere: listen. they both miss artorias. they both loved him in their own ways. i hc that ciaran mentored artorias and gwynevere’s daughter. why can’t lydia have two mommies since her daddy ran off and got his ass lost to the darkness?

shizuka:

shimaj: oh we hit it out the park w this one. the identity issues, the trauma and the need to defend, the bad person and the one so convinced of their own badness... it’s a delight, lucky. you blessed me with this. there’s a lot of layers to them both under their bombastic, unconventional lifestyles that they’re still trying so hard to shield from the other’s notice. the fact they might actually get one another on some level, the way no one else understands. it doesn’t even have to be romantic -- they’re still ride or die, still repaying loyalty with loyalty. especially once they are at points where they don’t owe it to one another, when majima is no longer their patron and they no longer have an obligation to protect him as an honorable man. i think you once joked that one day when they’re both old as hell and retired, they’re just going to get married because they have nothing else to do, and i think that’s a good summation of the dynamic. slowly working through things together, and getting closer to one another almost against their will.

gensaiyama: shizuka’s gay for kaoru. that’s it, that’s the post. i feel like if there was ever a wlw answer to the buddy cop dynamic, this would be it: law abiding hard ass lady cop who eats yakuza for breakfast juxtaposed off of the convention defying chaos loving defense attorney who has been openly accused of being yakuza otaku in the past. both are in the same game, but on opposing teams. and yet, shizuka has loads of respect for kaoru and what she knows of her department, and thinks a woman like that deserves the finer things. they’re both dfab in a man’s world, after all, chasing the shadows cast by the underworld. if kaoru ever ends up in kamuro again, shizuka’s gonna go out of their way to ensure at least one dinner with this indomitable woman.

yukizuka: shizuka’s gay for yuki. but then, who isn’t gay for yuki? they’re both legendary in the cabaret game, though shizuka operated under a different identity entirely. really they just want yuki to step on them and prove why she deserves to be the alpha host(ess) in the relationship. this is a nightmare that any majima who acted as shizuka’s patron in the host days is having. shizuka showing up in their old host garb is a nightmare that yuki is having, because the ponytail and vintage cut suit is bringing back flashbacks to the grand. and yet, shizuka’s hope springs eternal that osaka’s queen notice them and give into their endless charms.

shizuka/anyone who will treat them right tbh. someone who can convince them the opinions of others and the scorn they faced in the past for their identity and beliefs do not define them. that their heart is in the right place and they’re fighting against an institution they find unjust, and that this is a show of strength and care for others. someone who makes them slow down without making them stop entirely, someone who supports both their career and their own needs outside of ambition. one day someone’s going to love this mess right and i will cry.

mercy:

merhog.

that’s it. i never got on the genji/mercy express, fareeha and mercy fandom intimidated the hell out of me, i kind of called 76 was gay that and the age difference coupled with their dynamic squicked me out, and i don’t know a lot about the new characters.

but the concept of two characters who lost their family to war and made some bad decisions in the years after? the idea of a take no shit woman on the side of the angels staggering the big bad don’t fuck with me type that has never been challenged in his life? i’m really digging it, guys. beauty and the beast. hope vs survival. the healer with the sick. there's so much dichotomy that i want to take a solid bite out of. no, i want to devour it.

Princess Sonique’s past was quiet and uneventful for most of her life. Her people were only a small community in comparison to other ocean dwelling settlements. She was, what most land walkers would call, a ‘Merhog’, though she actually had no hedgehog lineage. She was more closely related to a dolphin or orca. Her appearance was changed drastically once the Chaos Rift tore through the world. She could no longer swim as her tail had been ripped in two, being beached and dragging herself up the sand she had to teach herself how to walk on her legs, that hurt like every bone from her waist down was broken and the soles of her feet were full of needles. Not knowing how to swim with legs, she could not return home, and was forced to try and adapt to this new life she had been thrown into.

She sang her sorrows away at night, and spent her life near the ocean, hoping that perhaps, if she could find the right song, she could heal herself to go home.

As she was singing to the ocean, it seemed as though she had summoned a creature of great power that offered her a deal that she couldn’t refuse. By helping this mysterious person with her magic voice, they will return the favour, by reversing the damage done to her.

The Princess sang with all her might, calling upon the ocean and what was left of the moon to aid her in returning the power taken from the stranger, who in turn, used their power to heal her. The Princess taught them how to use their voice for their power, and they both harmonised immediately. Their voice and their power both became intertwined that night, and bonded by fate and magic for eternity. Sonique saw the creature’s true form, and despite being terrified, knew that she could trust them. It seems as though the creature could not hold their true form for long, and collapsed into a smaller, weaker state. The Princess listened to them as they told her their story, and was heart broken to hear of such a betrayal. This beautiful and terrifying being was a Queen to an alien race, and he was the only one left alive.

This Rift had affected them both, and they both found that they could return to their Mobian form at will. The Princess’ legs did not hurt anymore to walk on, for a while at least, but she did need to rest them frequently once the pain began to return. The Queen could return to her Mobian form at will, and would do her best to remain within it for as long as possible, as to not cause a panic in the public eye.

Princess Sonique, and the Queen that she has called Shadiana, have been living together for years, and have even admitted to having romantic feelings for one another. They are quite dependant of one another, and are almost completely inseparable.

She is Princess Sonique Aquaria.
