@cinnabarlab submitted: found this very pretty moth in upstate NY and i’m fairly sure it’s a type of grass moth but i can’t figure out which kind, and the closest matches i could find weren’t from anywhere near me so i wonder if it’s something invasive or a native species i missed. thanks for any help!
I’m afraid I’d need a clearer photo to tell you what it is. Looks like maybe a pyralid or crambid moth, but couldn’t get more specific. In my experience, native is much much more likely.

Very quick Invert-searching session before leaving home and stuff 🪲🪲
I have my camera battery fully charged and I'm as bored as a crab inside a can so why not
so first find.. I found a fly! I thought it'll just going to go downhill from there (no bugs but fly for a straight five minutes???) but no, the world is full of bugs :]
Tumblr media
The day was very windy so the bugs should settle to the leaves and then I just.. squatted and stared at the grass patch really hard but hey the effort payed off because I found THE SLENDER SKIMMER!! my second favourite dragonfly probably.. I just love green honestly (very common species) and a cute paddy bug.. they're very movey
Tumblr media Tumblr media
good good.. also I saw a butterfly just fly from leaf to leaf which means it's laying eggs, I got closer to the tree and it stayed still.. I'm very very happy at that moment and found not only one, but TWO chocolate pansy laying eggs in one tree!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and oh oh oh when I went back to the patch of grassland I saw a very badly eaten plant, I really thought maybe a cat(erpillar) is eating it but no I just found this little guy.. wadda hec
Tumblr media
yadda yadda hey! at least i found not one but TWO spiders.. one which I think is garden spider and the other one a golden orbweaver!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
OH AND HERE COMES THE COOL PART!! I FOUND A MOTH THAT DIDNT LOOK LIKE A MOTH I THINK ITS ONE OF THOSE PYRALOIDEA (I can only spot it because it flew before it landed if not I probably wont notice it for the rest of my life AND EVEN AFTER I BUDGE IT A BIT IT WONT MOVE.. SO STUBBORN) JUST LOOK:
Tumblr media
What even is that?? There's no moth?? NO THERE IS IF YOU LOOK MORE CLOSELY..
Tumblr media
GOD IT'S A SUPER TINY MOTH... but there's one more thing universe apparently really liked me that day probably.. IT'S THE SLENDER SKIMMER FROM A WHILE BACK!
Tumblr media
heckin crazy this is the clearest photograph of a dragonfly I ever took freaking nice way to end the adventure because I won't be seeing any bugs for one day straight after that.. STILL GOOD.
So conclusion: anytime is good time to search for bugs.. thank u.

@microchipt submitted: hello! i found this gentleman at the very top of Pikes Peak in Colorado, 14,115 ft above sea level! he has quite the schnoz!
are you able to identify him? he was absolutely tiny so this was the most i could get it to focus :,)
What a cute little snoot on this fellow! They look like a Pyralid snout moth, but beyond that, since they haven’t got any distinct markings, I couldn’t say! At least not without comparing one million photos to try and narrow it down.

30/09/23 Photos 1-4 - Caterpillar constructs
An interesting kind of caterpillar can be found in the rainforests of the Wet Tropics (and elsewhere of course).
The caterpillars typically expected to build portable cases are those within the Tineoidea superfamily, although this behavior is indeed not limited to "bagworms".
These caterpillars, which remained hidden in their strange shoelace shelters, are within the Stericta genus (Pyralidae). Though I was unable to photograph the caterpillars themselves, others on iNaturalist have managed to do so.
(here)
Tumblr media
The caterpillars I came across were feeding in a small group on a young tree. Unfortunately, the plant species remains unidentified, though I hope the caterpillar infestation does not hold it back too much.
