I stumbled upon a post about @renegadewangs fanfiction series Phantoms and Mirages and then read it and got super duper invested in it and now I am a blackbright (not phantomquill) shipper

anyway it is highly recommended especially for all of you like me who yearned for an AU where the real Bobby Fulbright lived and could go back to his life with the bonus of blackbright

when I was scrolling through your blog one time I found fanart someone did of the main cast of Phantoms and Mirages and I was super happy to see an artistic representation of Bobby's hair cuz I was struggling to picture it in my mind and a few minutes ago I was perusing the image gallery for Bobby on the fandom wiki and found his concept art and noticed that his hair in the fanart looked like it was based on one of the concept art designs!

was this your intention or like the artist's interpretation? I really wanna know! :)

Oho, good catch, that was my intention! I also own the artbook, so I specifically based Bobby's makeover on the scrapped concepts.

Welcome to the 60th installment of 15 Weeks of Phantom, where I post all 68 sections of Le Fantôme de l’Opéra, as they were first printed in Le Gaulois newspaper 113 yeas ago.

In today’s installment, we have Part III of Chapter 25, “Les Supplices commencent” (The Torture Begins), and Part I of Chapter 26, "Tonneaux !... Tonneaux !... Avez-vous des tonneaux à vendre ?" (Barrels! Barrels! Have You Any Barrels to Sell?).

This section was first printed on Tuesday, 28 December, 1909.

For anyone following along in David Coward’s translation (the link is to the Kindle edition on Amazon US), the text starts in Chapter 24, “For she was right in thinking that there was some horrible significance attached to the light which had appeared in the spyhole...,” and goes Chapter 25, “If I was ever to use what I knew, it was now or never!”

TRANSLATOR’S NOTE (sections highlighted in blue):

1) As in the previous section of this chapter, Erik shifts from 2nd person singular (informal "you") to 2nd person plural (formal "you") when addressing Christine. Again, these are not instances of Erik being proper, but rather of him being overly "polite" and thus condescending.

2) Regarding Erik's line: Tiens ! je soulève un peu mon masque ! Oh ! un peu seulement... Tu vois mes lèvres ? (Look! I am lifting my mask a little! Oh, only a little... You see my lips?)

As @rjdaae discovered in her historical costume research on Erik's mask, the "barbe" (literally, “beard”) of a mask was a piece of hanging fabric attached to the bottom of a demi-mask. This design allowed Erik to lift the hanging fabric of his mask to show his lips without having to shift the entire mask, as can be seen in this mask of similar design from Helsinki.

There are some differences between the standard 1st Edition text and the Gaulois text. In this section, these include (highlighted in red above):

1) Chapter XXVI was printed as Chapter XXVII. This numbering error was made in Chapter VII, and was not corrected, so it was propagated throughout the Gaulois publication.

2) Each chapter in the Gaulois publication is one number ahead of the chapters in the 1st Edition, due to the inclusion of “The Magic Envelope” in the Gaulois.

3) Compare the Gaulois text:

L'apparition de cette forêt impénétrable dont les troncs et les branches innombrables nous enlaçaient jusqu'à l'infini, le plongea dans une consternation effarante.

(The appearance of this impenetrable forest, whose countless trunks and branches surrounded us into infinity, sent him into a state of alarming dismay.)

To the 1st Edition:

L'apparition de cette forêt impénétrable dont les troncs et les branches innombrables nous enlaçaient jusqu'à l'infini, le plongea dans une consternation effrayante.

(The appearance of this impenetrable forest, whose countless trunks and branches surrounded us into infinity, sent him into a state of dreadful dismay.)

NOTE: Leroux based the design of Erik’s torture chamber on the Palais des Mirages (Hall of Mirrors) at the Musée Grévin (see video below), which was anachronistically created in 1900 for the Exposition Universelle in Paris, and brought to the Musée Grévin in 1906. The Palais des Mirages is a small, octagonal mirrored room whose changing scenery reflected in mirrored recursion makes it appear like a great hall that stretches on into infinity.

4) Minor differences in punctuation and italicization.

DP HC - The Green Flash

At sunset, the sky sometimes lights up green. This is often called the Green Flash, Green Ray, the Mock Mirage, or M-Mir.

Scientifically speaking this flash is "as the sun sinks its rays start to pass through the temperature inversion. The action of the inversion is most easily understood by concentrating on the interface between the warmer layer and the cool more dense air beneath. Rays passing downwards through it are refracted so that they curve slightly towards the earth. The upper parallel sun ray glances through the inversion and is most strongly curved. To the eye, the ray appears to be coming from a point higher in the sky and it contributes to an upper (and inverted) image of the sun. The lower parallel ray is less deflected and contributes to a lower solar image. In a direction tangential to the base of the inversion layer small vertical differences in ray directions are highly magnified. The normally insignificant green rim of the sun is vertically stretched to produce a green flash."

But mythologically, it's said that this happens when a soul returns to Earth from the afterlife.

The truth is that the Green Flash takes place whenever the mnemonic imprint of a spirit from Earth journeying through the Infinite Realms erodes completely. At which point, they disappear from the IR & reappear back on Earth to be reincarnated as someone new.

This always happens at sundown & is usually due to a large number of souls returning at once. The reason why it's green is due to the burst of ectoplasmic energy that takes place when the unbound souls shift from one universe to another.

No one in the Living Realms knows why it has to happen like this, but when a soul is ready to reincarnate, it disappears, but doesn't immediately reappear in it's home universe. You see, it takes a lot of energy to breach the barrier between universes, so many reincarnating souls must gather, it's suspected in some form of pocket universe, & their soul magic, blue magic specifically which is associated with spacial/gravity magics & teleportation, builds up more & more until, with an ectoplasmic boost, there's enough to carry them all back.

No one knows, specifically, why reincarnating souls only return at sundown.

The truth of the matter is that rebirth deities such as Zagreus gather these souls & use soul magic to take them back to the Living Realms. This sudden appearance creates a great flash of green light in the sky due to the ectoplasm released in the area.

Ghosties

Tried playing around with geometry nodes and it almost fell flat but... I managed to salvage things with a couple of arrays before using them. Threw in the TMS ghosts for fun and since I didn't want to model more boo variations.

A foolish Queen with a foolish desire: to destroy the world only because her loved one abandoned her. Humans are foolish creatures with no ambition at all. Pathetic!

Queen Mirage slammed the bottom of her staff against the ground, summoning red ribbons that wrapped around the Choiark's limbs.

"You will not speak to me like that if you wish to live!" And to drive the point home, Mirage sent tons of dark energy traveling down the red ribbons to shock the Choiark until it was knocked out.
