Phantom Brave is super fucking fun, but I can see why it's not as popular as Nippon Ichi's other titles. Even with Disgaea, and tactical turn based RPG's being niche enough as they are.
The actual movement around the board, the tactical part? Kinda feels bad. Trying to aim attacks without a grid, no idea what the ranges are, and in 3D space is... Annoying. Besides that, I like the games quirks a lot, like the Over Damage system.
Over Damage is a mechanic that only really affects the player. If any unit takes Damage that equals it's own HP or more, after it's already been K.O'd, they're not just a ghost, they're double dead. So rezzing them costs an item, plus the money to pay the healer.
Over Damage feels like a mechanic for a gritty dungeon crawler VRPG, or any TTRPG with crunch. Extra insult to injury, punishing you for wasting resources and for not handling your allies' bodies with care by making your quality of life harder. It's a mechanic that serves the same function across genres; grounding you in the fiction.
In Pathfinder, in Vagante, in Path of Exile, in Wakfu (goofy as it is), a death isn't just a 5minute walk back to your last spot. Your OC, your cutesy little grungy cute little cube, your tiny survivor, your goofy little doll OC just died, and in Phantom Brave it's your friend. Each failure can have consequences.
The tone of each game differs (a lot, if you've played at least two of these, I'm sorry for the tonal whiplash) but death always matters. These games want you to be more thoughtful about how you play, and actually pay attention to how your treat your new toys. Phantom Brave is a game that lets you chaperone a little orphan girl freelance adventurer, who's primary character trait is being compassionate and earnest in a world that openly hates her for breathing. While I wish Nippon Ichi would let us a little further into her head instead of othering her to us too, and making us just Marona's guardian. I'm so happy that the game mechanics support that feeling.
I wish more people talked about Phantom Brave. I can't wait to see where it goes with all of you ^w^

After i played Disgaea 2, my first nippon ichi game, and shaw Gig, iv'e been wanting to play Soul nomad and the world eaters. And now, give or take 7-8 years. I finished the main story of Soul nomad around the 30 hour mark.
Verry good game. Probably my 3rd if not 2nd faivourite from the nippon ichi JRPGS. Being a 2007 game, there are some things you need to bare with. But. Ohh boy. It was so good.
i have started the demon path. And i am not thaaat big a fan of how it starts off. but i hope it gets better.
will not like. I am not regretting waiting for that long.
(lil spoiler for soul nomad and phantom brave ig)
Seeing endomorph pull out the Psycho Burgundy. made me get up from my chair, And made me conect some paralels to Walnut form phantom brave. Like... if some were to say the two games could in some way be connected. Pretty sure one could be an anccestor to the other.

I'm still on my bullshit.
Today I will be writing a manifesto for why these two, Persimmon (owl) and Walnut (blonde) from the 2004 game Phantom Brave, should kiss.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(click the right image for the rest of Persimmon's hair)
1. Walnut is an asshole.
This is Marona, the game's protagonist:
Tumblr media
She's an adorable 13 year old girl who's never had a mean thought in her whole life. On his introduction Walnut attempts to beat her up and steal her lunch money. When he loses badly he instead goes to her customer and gets them to call her mean names until she runs away crying (successfully stealing her future lunch money). He laughs about this.
Tumblr media
He's 20.
Tumblr media
2. Walnut still somehow manages to have a friend.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately we have very few good images of Persimmon. But yes, Persimmon knows Walnut steals lunch money from 13 year old girls. In fact Persimmon hooked him up with the lunch-money-stealing job because he's an informant and knows about them.
What? He doesn't approve.
So why, then, does he hang out with a lunch-money thief? Why does he facilitate the lunch money stealing? Walnut doesn't so much as buy him a drink during the game.
Tumblr media
AND YET
2.1. Persimmon is a very very good friend.
Persimmon buys Walnut a drink:
Tumblr media
Thinks back fondly on their first meeting:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Worries over his health:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Panics when Walnut gets his ass handed to him:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And even mourns his "death" as the final credits scene:
Tumblr media
(Walnut is canonically not dead) (We don't talk about the game Endorph is in but it's proof Walnut is alive at least)
All this and Persimmon doesn't even know about Walnut's sister.
4. Walnut has a sister
Tumblr media
This is Castile. She's an adorable 13 year old girl who's never had a mean thought in her whole life. Also, she's sick.
4.1 The world is a capitalist hellscape
Castile's medicine costs as much per month as it costs to buy the island Marona lives on late in the game.
Remember how Walnut stole Marona's lunch money?
You may have already guessed where that's going.
5. Walnut's a sad little meow meow
Walnut* was adopted some unknown number of years prior by a wealthy family that is not wealthy anymore (sick sister). He didn't have a good time of it and ran away from home.
*real name Faded, idk why he gave up that impressively emo name either. Trying to match with Persimmon??? Gay.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also the power he uses to steal lunch money for his sister is killing him.
Tumblr media
Unfortunately for him, God Is Laughing At Him and stealing lunch money for his sister literally almost ends the world.
Tumblr media
6. The Sexy Lady Marona rents her Island from Has Many Secrets.
i. Brave: Person with the ability to burn their own soul for a major power boost. ii. Furry: An enthusiast for animal characters with human characteristics.
A bunny man sends you on several quests looking for the lady you rent the island from. You do not know she is the person you're looking for. Ironically these failed quests pay your rent.
Here's why this matters:
6.1 The island is very small and the only structure on it is a one bedroom house.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
6.2 Scarlet (sexy lady) does not want to part with the island because it has sentimental value. It has sentimental value because she lived on that island with... an owl named Jade.
Tumblr media
She lived on the island with an owl. She lived on the island with the one bedroom house with an owl.
Tumblr media
(This is official, they were lovers).
(The bunny man seems to be in love with her too, but this is irrelevant).
7. Walnut is the only other Brave in the game.
Despite the name, there is no Phantom Brave. It's more of a mindset for our protagonists. The power of the Brave belongs only to Scarlet (sexy lady) (loved and fucked an owl in the one-bedroom house) and Walnut (20) (steals lunch money) (only close relationship is with an owl).
Theories abound that Walnut may somehow be Sexy Lady's son, but this doesn't make sense because she's a furry. This is a NIS game so we can't be sure that matters, but Walnut appears fully human.
What matters here is... why draw this parallel? The Scarlet backstory is only available in a crazy endgame insane difficulty extra level. WHY have Scarlet the Brave be in love with an owl. WHY have Walnut's one friend be an owl. The game devs are telling us something. And it's that Walnut and Persimmon should kiss.
8. There's a fucking hammer somewhere in these damn NIS games that changes your race and by god if the owl thing doesn't do it for you that is RIGHT THERE-

Getting my RPG on! I now have all three volumes of Nis Classics Collection. These are Nintendo switch ports of some late 90's, older 2000's rpgs. They've been previously on ps1, ps2, psp and wii.
Volume 1 has Soul Nomad and Phantom Brave.
Volume 2 has Makai Kindom and ZHP
Volume 3 has La Pucelle and Rhapsody
These games are a great bang for your buck as their original versions now command a premium. If you're a fan of funny, quirky RPG games, either one of these is a solid choice.
