Review of "Schumann: Symphonies No. 3 'Rhenish' & No. 4." Lawrence Foster, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra. Pentatone PTC-5186 327 (SACD)
A few months before listening to this disc, I reviewed Maestro Lawrence Foster’s recording of the Schumann First and Second Symphonies, which he made for Pentatone around the same time he recorded these Third and Fourth Symphonies. I thought of the performances on that first set as sturdy but not particularly noteworthy. Meaning that given today’s competitive recording market, Foster’s album wouldn’t probably be at the top of most people’s list of first choices. I think it’s fair to say the same of the present disc.

I like the new Percy Jackson show but the theme song is absolute trash so I decided I wanted to redo it. Not done yet, this is just the rough first draft, but I think it's pretty nice so far.

Pentatonic-Scale(5

Quick lesson no 42 - Scales - The C minor 6 pentatonic scale
I show and discuss a minor 6 pentatonic scale to a rhumba blues beat accompaniment with the C7 chord in this lesson. It´s a very useful scale to blues tunes and if you want a bluesy sound to other styles as well.

Review of "Brahms: Symphonies 3 & 4," with Herbert Blomstedt and the Gewandhaus Orchestra. Pentatone PTC 5186 852
When I first got to know the talents of Swedish conductor Herbert Blomstedt (b. 1927), it was during his tenure as Music Director of my local big band, the San Francisco Symphony, from 1985 to 1995. My wife and I attended a number of his performances, and I always thought of him as a good, sturdy conductor. He never seemed splashy or flamboyant, just musically solid, so I sort of characterized him in the class of a Karl Bohm, Eugene Jochum, Adrian Boult, Eugene Ormandy, or Bernard Haitink. Friends of mine would sometimes say he was too “foursquare,” too “old fashioned,” or too much the “kapellmeister” in a derogatory sense. It’s true, he never displayed the celebrated idiosyncrasies that defined some other famous conductors like Stokowski, Bernstein, Karajan, or Klemperer, but he made up for it in concerts of simple, elegant taste.

I am kind of interested almost anthropologically in the way ‘jazzbro’ theory has filtered into online musical discourses: primarily the idea that modes should be taught *early*. They’re wonderful and colorful (see: you can play CREAM on the piano almost immediately) but the standard triad chordal analysis is immensely complicated by using them, which is why normally we start by teaching students the major and minor scales and then expanding out
