tonkatsu and cabbages
featuring: tsukishima kei from haikyuu!!
cw: female!reader, housemates, college au, slow burn
wc: 1.2k
oh, right. he's on a full schedule today.
the realization just dawned upon you as soon as you opened the apartment door, only to be greeted by darkness.
it was evening already, after all.
you made your way inside, leaving your leather shoes on the rack by the entrance. walking directly to your room, you placed your bag on the table before plopping your body on the bed.
the thought of sleeping crossed your mind after a quite exhausting day at the university. but then, you remember you'll be the one to cook dinner tonight because it's your turn to do so—and not for the reason that he's not home yet.
who's he? your housemate, who goes by the name tsukishima kei, is whom you have been living with for a few months now.
and so far being under the same roof as him, you have not encountered a single worry or problem. may it be about taking turns in household chores and such, as well as boundaries on matters.
“maybe i'd just cook tonkatsu…” you've decided and pulled yourself out of the comfort of the bed.
clipping your hair in a messy bun after changing your clothes, you made your way out of your room and proceeded to the kitchen.
you wore your beige apron and prepared the ingredients on the counter, thankful that there's fresh pork loin stored in the fridge—brought home by your housemate just the other day. condiments were complete as always so there wasn't really a problem about them.
with everything settled, you start to slit the rim sides of the pork, and then pound them to flatten. and after seasoning the pork with salt and ground pepper, you let it sit for about thirty minutes to absorb the flavor.
there wasn't any leftover rice from last night because your housemate already made them into yakimeshi (pan-fried rice) this morning for both of your breakfast. so you also needed to cook steamed rice for dinner.
afterwards, you washed your hands and thought of playing some music in the living room—where the television is located. some browsing was made before you finally picked to play an album of one of your favorite bands.
‘the black parade’ by my chemical romance.
knowing that the soundtracks would be quite loud as usual, you set the volume a bit low, enough for you to hear from the kitchen.
while waiting for the pork, you already prepared flour, panko bread crumbs, and beaten eggs in separate containers. other needed ingredients were also separated in pinch bowls.
but then you also realized there was something missing after noticing there indeed weren't any cabbages to be shredded. you could run to a 24/7 grocery store downtown, yes. if only your legs weren't just worn out today, but they quite are.
and as for messaging your housemate…
tsukishima kei is also a college student like you, the same university even. however, you don't really bump into each other on campus grounds because your buildings are quite far from one another. he's taking biology while you major in journalism. so that makes sense.
and another fact is that… you don't really have his number… or even know his socials so…
yeah, and you've been housemates for months. now isn't that interesting? kidding aside, it's not really a concern for you. but thinking about it, maybe it could be of use in times like this.
but then, if you happen to have his contact, how would you even construct a message? it's silly because you two don't even talk to each other that much. nonetheless if it's about rent, groceries, or anything related to the both of you living together.
you purse your lips and heave a sigh, picking up a broom to sweep from your room, to the kitchen, the living room until by the entryway to kill time.
‘cancer' started playing by the time you finished sweeping and it's the eighth song from the album, so you figured almost thirty minutes had passed already—a perfect time to coat the seasoned pork in flour, beaten eggs, and panko bread crumbs.
but before that, you first prepare a deep fry pan, pour in enough cooking oil, and turn on the induction. you started frying the pork when the heat was all ready for deep frying.
you were already making sauce for the tonkatsu as you hear a beep and a faint voice from the entrance of the apartment. “i'm home…"
the last soundtrack from the album just faded to end, that's why you were able to hear those small sounds from a distance.
“welcome home…” you casually replied, like you always do, accompanied by a slight bow.
you turned your body to the direction where you see the tall guy walking towards the kitchen in his plain white shirt and black trousers. he's wearing glasses, usual headphones around his neck, and his beige bag hanging on his shoulder.
seeing a sports tote's on his hand, you assumed he had volleyball practice since you're aware that he's already part of a professional volleyball team.
he entered the kitchen, walking past you to reach for a glass of water—your sense of smell catching his manly scent. you turned off the induction and cleared your throat before speaking again.
“i fried tonkatsu for dinner tonight using the pork loin you brought last time, but i didn't know we don't have cabbages stored anymore and i wasn't able to buy some…”
in the first place, both of you agreed how it was perfectly fine to use each other's ingredients, as long as it was stated to be alright doing so, ahead of time. so you had no worries in terms of cooking even without asking for another permission beforehand.
and it was the same for him.
“that's alright,” he responded after drinking, voice was the usual low and calm. you watch him place the glass on the sink and how he unzipped the bag on his shoulder after.
“but it's surprising how i thought of buying shredded cabbage just right down the street on the way home today.” a sealed rectangular plastic food container was taken out of his bag.
his arm slowly moved towards your direction, handing you the container filled with shredded cabbage mixed with some bean sprouts.
panic couldn't be helped when your eyes suddenly met his. you carefully reached out for it using both of your palms.
“thank you… tsukishima," you muttered and decided to give him a small but sincere smile. “you can continue with your routine, and i'll call you once everything's ready."
you saw how his adam's apple moved as he swallowed before turning his gaze to the side. “i'll help set up the table."
you couldn't help but chuckle lightly, noticing something different but you didn't dare pointing it out. “it's fine, i got this. you can rest for a bit."
“i'll just take a quick shower,” he mumbled that you almost didn't get his words, quickly turning his back on you afterwards.
you bit your lower lip to prevent yourself from smiling as you saw his ears reddening more.

heloooo :) if you also answer questions of another personal kind of nature, what is a food/dish that you enjoy eating, and what is one that you enjoy preparing, and why?
This is such a fun question!!
as for foods i love cooking, my favourite food ever to cook is risotto. I specifically love adding roasted mushrooms and peas and sage to my risotto, but any risotto is good risotto in my book.
for foods I love eating??? I could probably eat only different types of dumplings until the day i die and i'd die happily. I'm partial to gyoza and xiao long bao, but also pan fried pork buns and ravioli are immaculate too. OH i also love eating my homemade chicken pot pie, its stupidly good. its so good.

It’s time for another recipe inspired by @tastesoftamriel - this time, Orcish buns filled with minced pork and root vegetables.
The bun dough itself and baking times is based on the dough for Balmora cabbage biscuits, except with less sugar since the root vegetables already add some sweetness to the whole thing.
The root vegetables are a mix, but primarily carrots in fun colors plus parsley root and topinambur. I tossed them with oil, salt, rosemary and thyme and baked them in the oven (a bit shorter than I normally would since they get a second round in the buns - 20 minutes at 180°C but including the time for the oven to warm up).
For the minced pork, I fried it in a pan. To give a contrast to the remaining sweetish flavors, this got generous amounts of paprika, chipotle chili and cumin (as well as some salt of course).
And I have to say the experiment went well! Could see that becoming a winter staple.
Bonus prep image: nonbinary pride root vegetables.

hi beck!!<3 who in the world is itscourtneyluna??
vic hi for the love of god hello! thank you (or sorry) for asking…
she’s a tiktoker who partakes in the “carnivore diet” wherein she only eats animal products and byproducts, so just meat and dairy. it’s like extreme keto in that she eats zero fruits or vegetables, but fat content seems to be valued over protein because she rarely eats poultry and generally sticks to red meat. it can cause weight loss due to the complete lack of carbs, but this is obviously not a healthy way to lose weight.
in courtney’s case, i believe she used to post regular baking content on tiktok, then she shifted at some point to what she called “carnivore-ish” where she ate some fruits and vegetables but tried to eat mostly meat/dairy (probably to lose weight). but now she maintains that she’s fully carnivore, to the point where she doesn’t even season her food (besides salt) because seasonings come from plants 😟
itscourtneyluna is an enigma to me. she seems like a troll at first glance because she’s clearly using people’s interest in bizarre food content on tiktok in her favor for rage clicks, but at the same time, she wholeheartedly endorses the alleged “health benefits” of eating a high saturated fat zero carb diet. she will respond to criticism saying everyone is sheeple for eating balanced diets, and that even doctors and nutritionists are unreliable because they were taught the wrong information.
she drinks coffee even though it comes from a plant, and gets upset when people point that out because she “should be allowed to enjoy things even if they’re not 100% carnivore” which like yes queen. absolutely. but you’re the one who led us to believe that a single pepper flake would kill you, so we’re just a little confused.
here are some of the recipes she posts (the ingredients listed are the only ones involved. no seasonings ever.) that tend to go viral because they’re so rage-inducing:
“chaffles” - eggs and shredded cheese melted in a waffle maker, typically used in place of a bun
“beef and butter bites” - ground beef and butter frozen into christmas themed molds
“pre workout” - a bite of kerrygold butter washed down with heavy cream (a direct quote)
“carnivore soup” - ground pork, beef broth, cream cheese, and salt
“carnivore cracker” - a slice of cheese melted in a mini waffle maker until it’s crunchy
“carnivore ice cream” - cream, egg, and salt poured into an ice cream maker
“carnivore pasta” - ground chicken mixed with eggs cut into small pieces, boiled in water, and fried to (allegedly) resemble gnocchi (her words) with a sauce made of butter, cream, and parmesan
“carnivore crispies cereal” - pork rinds with half and half poured over them and eaten in a bowl with a spoon
“carnivore candy” - melted brown butter frozen in candy molds
“carnivore crack” - melted brown butter with “bacon sprinkles” frozen on a sheet pan and broken into chunks as one would with candy bark
and listen. im autistic. i eat weird stuff sometimes. i think people should be able to eat whatever they want without having to answer to anyone. however.
it becomes an issue when you claim everyone should be eating that way, and spread misinformation that was just created to sell shit. this is part of the fascination for me; how can she participate and perpetuate something so blatantly incorrect?
she also likes joe rogan. this woman is not real.

FEATURE: 7 Anime-Inspired Burgers Of The Day Bob Belcher Could Add To The Menu
Tumblr media
Bob Belcher and his family have finally made it to the big screen, and what could go better with a family-friendly movie than family-friendly food fare? If you’re not ordering a juicy burger to nosh on while watching The Bob’s Burgers Movie, you’re doing it wrong.
Bob, of course, is known for his burger of the day — a special burger with unique ingredients and a pun-based name. And so many are total hits, like the “Pepper Don’t Preach” and “Last of the Mo-Jicama.”
Naturally, this leads to the question: What if Bob based his burger of the day on different anime? Keep reading to find out, but just a warning: you may get hungry.
The Bourbon & Buu Burger - Dragon Ball Super
Tumblr media
If there’s one thing the Belcher kids love, it’s Halloween. If there are two things, they're Halloween and fantastical stories in which heroes come in the clutch to save the world. The Bourbon & Buu Burger combines both of these things with one of anime’s biggest villains, and, well, ghosts.
It’s made of a mix of bison and ox meat stuffed with Buu cheese (bleu cheese), topped with bourbon-glazed bacon, and crunchy Piccolos (pickles). The buns are buttered and lightly toasted in a pan to add additional flavor. The finishing touch? A napkin with two eyeholes cut out, carefully draped over the top.
The Double Deku Burger - My Hero Academia
Tumblr media
With great power (and glasses) comes great responsibility. Heroes give their whole selves to those in need. Flying through the clouds, doing helpful things or, you know, finding kitchen stuff. Why not celebrate their hard work with a super special burger? This one features not one, but two beef patties with lettuce, tomatoes, red onions and Bob’s house-made Kacchan Ketchup!
Served with an icy cold beverage and hot fries, what a refreshing clash! This burger is so good y’all might have to go back for more. Maybe Bob can even get his own personal hero, Torpedo Jones, to say he likes it!

The Turkey Club Sandwich - Ouran High School Host Club
Tumblr media
Listen, if Bob Belcher were ever going to make a burger that didn’t include some kind of red meat, it would be turkey. The man loves his Thanksgiving dinners, so pass the cranberry sauce, we’re havin’ mashed potatoes!
This one features a fried turkey breast with lettuce, a delicate tomato bacon jam, ranch dressing, and toasted bread cut into four with no crusts. And don’t worry, the turkey can easily be swapped out for chicken every other day of the year. The perfect burger for a smart, and strong woman who’s definitely old enough to sit at the adults’ table.
The Spicy Dattemayo Burger - Naruto/BORUTO: NARUTO NEXT GENERATIONS
Tumblr media
Leftover from Bob’s foray into the food truck industry, this delightfully weird concoction starts with a 6oz wagyu (Hokwagyu? Is that anything?) patty stuffed with habanero pimento cheese and chopped up naruto. This is topped with spicy mustard aioli, crispy kale, and two Ichiraku ramen buns. Is it a little strange? Sure. Too spicy? Maybe. But is it good? You better BELIEVE IT!

Don’t ever say Bob is a one-note chef. He can take a simple bowl of ground meat and transform it into anything, whether it be a patty or a … ball. This burger comes with a large meatball made with a blend of beef and pork, glazed in a teriyaki sauce, topped with wilted bok choy, and crystallized ginger on a sesame seed bun.
Not only is Bob versatile, but this sandwich is also. It can be served anywhere from a school cafeteria to a formal event. Tuxedo mask optional.
The Blue-Finned Elephant Tunami Burger - One Piece
Tumblr media
No way would Bob even allow tuna to be served in his restaurant! This burger features a sea salt and pink peppercorn crusted tuna patty topped with a chutney of grilled devil fruits, one piece of cheese, and sprinkles of gold leaf. But you’ll have to be quick — this limited-edition burger is only available until Bob finds his way out of the wall.
It’d be great to pack along for a ride in Teddy’s boat. Just a regular boat ride, not a murderous one.  Results may vary from consuming devil fruits.

Don’t Burn The ‘Wich - BURN THE WITCH

Can vegan food be good? Witch, Please! This vegan burger is so good, that you’ll think it was magic enough to take on a powerful witch like Mr. Ambrose. It’s a black bean patty blended with mushrooms and carrots. It is then topped with caramelized onions, sunflower seeds for crunch, and dragonfruit ketchup.
What would possess Bob to serve vegan burgers? Especially after the debacle that was sweet potato fries? Maybe he’s just looking out for his not-friend Teddy’s heart. Aww.
