i know i say this every time i reach a milestone, hell anytime i get a new follower that isn't a blank blog or bot, but i can't believe you guys are still here! still supporting me! still putting up with my chaos! i mean it each time i get all sappy about how grateful i am for each and every one of you and how i lucked out with you beautiful souls occupying this space with me. if i could send you all a little cupcake and a forehead kiss i would <3.

but since i can't do that let's have a little celebration instead!

like the flyer above states this celebration will focus solely on graphics and ya girl putting that photoshop to work and brushing off some of my old graphic and creative skills.

SOCIAL MEDIA/POP CULTURE TEMPLATES

last year, i spent way too much time putting together social media/pop culture edits for a famous ship au, and despite only ever receiving one request inquiring about the templates for said edits, i finally decided to put all my hard work to use and share the templates i made for it with anyone that might be interested.

some of them i made myself from scratch (twitter moments, vogue page, tmz tag, people magazine dot com article, tumblr gifset) while others i built updated and bigger versions from various templates from other people (of which i’ll try my very best to give proper credit to in this post!). these were up to date at the time i made them eight months ago but might be/probably are slightly outdated now but what can you do! free free to make any necessary tweaks to them if you’re a stickler for that kind of thing like i am.

i tried my best to organize each psd to be as simple as possible, included fonts when possible/needed, as well as picture sizes and any other limitations or tips. i hope someone else finds use for these and has as much fun creating things with them as i did!

Thank you so much for tagging me @lan-xichens, I’ll try my best to explain how I made this set from start to finish hehe ♡ and also a big thank you to @suibianjie @highwarlockkareena @nyx4 @aheartfullofjolllly and you as well Kris for putting this all together! Content creators get a lot less recognition than they deserve for all the time they put into their content, so getting everyone to see the (sometimes excessive) process we all go through to put our content in our blog, I hope it creates a positive change!! 💖

1. Planning

The set in question was actually requested by someone so they could celebrate their friend’s birthday! At first I wasn’t entirely sure if I was going to be able to finish it on time (college is very hectic right now) but I was able to finish it three days before the deadline which was may 1st! ^-^

The first thing I did was decide what characters I wanted to use in the set, I first reached out to the person who requested the set if there were certain characters they wanted me to use but they said they didn’t know enough to really give me any directives outside of the quote. I decided, since the quote is applicable to the entirety of the show, that I would try to put in as many characters as possible.

Thus, of course, came the hunting for scenes. Those of you in the net discord surely know I came into the content help channel a few times to ask for certain scenes here and there, and eventually I had to download an additional 10 episodes to the back then 20 or so episodes I had in my CQL episodes folder.

As you can see I have 30 random episodes of CQL downloaded (slowly but surely getting to the point where I have all 50 episodes downloaded) and I think I ended up using scenes out of at least 20 of those episodes.

I planned out beforehand what characters I would use per gif. I knew obviously I would start out with Wangxian, them being the main characters of the show, and then would work my way down the list. The second gif consists of Nie Huaisang, Nie Mingjue, Jin Zixuan, Jiang Yanli, Wen Qing, and Wen Ning. They’re all family pairings, two being siblings and one being a married couple. The next gifset consists of the Yi City characters, then the fourth gif consists of the juniors, and the final gif has Jin Guangyao, Mianmian, Jiang Cheng, and Lan Xichen in it.

I have to admit though that when I had made the first four gifs I’d forgotten who I would put in the last gif and the when I thought about it the first time around I could only think of Lan Qiren and the very cursed Yaoyang ship 😭 it was only at dinner time that same day that I remembered I hadn’t put Jiang Cheng in my gifset yet and that’s when I thought of the other characters as well.

I had already made my first two gifs when I went to check Hanyi’s blog for layout inspo and eventually I decided I wanted to try a triangle-ish layout, which I doodled below. I eventually ended up changing the layout of the last gif in the final design. It was also the first time I would work with a triangle-ish layout so I was a bit nervous as I was scared it wasn’t going to work out...

2. Creating

I use Avisynth 2.5 and Adobe Photoshop 2021 (the paid version, unfortunately, I need it for school except I didn’t need it this year but I wanted it so I paid for it with my own money ouch) to make my gifsets! I always start out with trimming down all the scenes I’m going to use into three to five second videos and putting them through Avisynth. This time around I did it separately for each gif I made, simply because I needed so many scenes. I would include a screenshot of my “gif vids” and “temp” folders but I’ve already deleted all the videos, which is what I usually do immediately after a set is posted.

I’ll try my best explaining this gif by gif since each one had a different layout!

2.1 Wangxian

I think I had up to five different designs of this gif 😭 it started out with the gif on the left originally being more centered and the quote right smack in the center but somehow it felt a bit too... empty? I changed up the design and pulled the gif over to the right and put the two closeups on the left, the exact opposite of the gif I eventually ended up with. I switched things around one more time and saved the gif as you can see it right now, except I didn’t include the lines yet. It was only as I finished up my fourth gif that I decided this gif needed lines as well so I added them ^-^

2.2 Nie Huaisang, Nie Mingjue, Jin Zixuan, Jiang Yanli, Wen Qing, and Wen Ning

I got the inspiration for the font layout on this gif from this Wenzhou post! I hadn’t tried it before and when I did for this gif I was very happy with the way it turned out :D I wanted to portray that life is a pile of good and bad things, as the quote says, in CQL by mirroring these happy scenes side by side with the sad scenes

2.3 Yi CIty

My first time working with the triangle layout!! Putting in the lines and making sure they would line up with the second gif took me the longest of all actually 😭 I think once I got the line on the left in I just copy pasted it and flipped it horizontally so I didn’t have to fiddle around with angling it anymore :’) my original idea was to get a happy Song Lan scene and a sad A-Qing scene, but when I stumbled upon this A-Qing scene in ep38 I just had to put it in there because her smile is so precious 🥺 Xue Yang and Xiao Xingchen in the center are also supposed to be mirrored, with Xue Yang embodying the “bad things” and Xiao Xingchen the “good things” ! I also think the Yi City characters fit this part of the quote very well!!

2.4 The Juniors

Ah yes, the junior quartet!! :D I had this planned out from the very beginning, that I would include happy versus sad juniors in the “vice versa” part of the quote, and I think it worked out quite well! My first idea was to put the “vice versa” completely in the special font and have it typed out over the gifs like I did with the “vice” but as I typed out the “versa” I realized it had one letter too much to be able to do that 😭😭 it took me a while to come up with how I would position the “but” and “versa” and after some moving around I decided to just place them the way I did in the final gif! For the font, I duplicated the “vice” and added a stroke to the duplicate, then I changed the fill setting to 0% so I could slightly drag the duplicate away from the original layer to create the effect that’s in the gif — also, finding a scene in which Jin Ling smiles is really difficult.... he barely even smiles in the scene I ended up using :(

2.5 Jin Guangyao, Mianmian, Jiang Cheng, and Lan Xichen

The final gif!! I feel like this might come a little across as “I promise I didn’t forget these characters” because they’re a very odd quadruplet to put together, but they were the most important characters left to put in the set! I was thinking of putting Nie Mingjue in here together with Jin Guangyao and Lan Xichen, but I did feel he fit more with his brother up in the second gif. Mei @mylastbraincql cheered me on making this gif for which I was very grateful :D <3 the layout came to be after I googled “how to evenly split a rectangle in four” because I didn’t want a repeat layout in the set (*/∇＼*)

2.6 Coloring

For the coloring I pretty much did all of the tweaking on the first gif and then copy pasted all of it onto the second, third, fourth, and fifth gif. This is usually the way I go about my coloring, I will always edit certain gifs if necessary but I don’t think I had to change the coloring much on any of these gifs? Maybe I added in a curve layer here and there, but nothing major! This is really one of my preferred coloring styles, even though I try to step outside of my comfort zones with other sets ^-^

3. Posting

I will always upload sets into my drafts and edit the caption in there as well, clicking on “preview post” a couple times to check everything looks good on my blog as well, before I post a set. However, this time, since there was a deadline and I finished before the deadline, I put this set in the queue so it would automatically post on the 1st of may! Knowing myself, I would’ve forgotten to do so </3

Whew that was... a lot 😭 did it make any sense? Probably not, but it was fun to ramble （ ´∀｀）

1. This is a gift exchange It’s why there’s a signup form. After the signup period ends, we will pair everyone up, and send out the prompts given by every person to their match, who will then create a work based off of those prompts. For example, it could look like: A writes for B, B writes for D, D writes for C, C writes for A. Everyone makes a gift, everyone receives a gift!

2. The theme is friendship! There is no ban on (background) romantic relationships, but please do keep in mind that the main focus of your prompts should be friendships or/and other types of platonic relationships! (If you personally do not want any kind of romantic element to your gift, just write it in the Do Not Want section!)

3. All types of fandom creations are welcome in this event Because this is a gift exchange and we need to ensure that every person will be able to be matched up to someone, every participant is required to be willing to make either a fanfic or a piece of fanart. However, we gladly welcome other types of media in this event too! Gifsets, videos, photo sets, fanmixes, anything that you might be a creator of is welcome in this event!

4. Canon characters, OCs and xReader works are all welcome The only existing caveat is that your work must be understandable for a person who has consumed nothing except the original show. This, of course, goes for any work, but we are aware that a big part of OC creation is their often amazingly wonderful backstories and past events who shaped who they are. These stories are incredibly welcome, but keep in mind that the person you are matched with might not have read or seen your earlier work, so make sure your creation is understandable to someone who has only seen the base show!

5. Defaulting and pinch hits “To default” is basically the term for dropping out of the event and not creating your work within the deadline. There are a lot of reasons why someone might default, and we will never question or judge someone for doing so, but if you think you might have to default, please let us know as soon as possible! After a default, we will put out the prompts given to the person who defaulted as a “pinch hit”. This means they will be put up with a request for a fill, to make sure every participant gets a gift. It’s called a pinch hit because they often have a much tighter timeframe than is originally allotted to the fest.

A note on the Anonymous Week All works have to be published to AO3 by the deadline to not be considered abandoned. This goes for fics, art, gifsets, any kind of creation for the event, and it’s in order for the mods to be able to keep track of how everyone is doing, who has finished and submitted their work, etc. For the first week of the works going public, they will be marked as “anonymous,” meaning you won’t be able to see the author. Here’s a screenshot from the Discord server with some info on why:

We’ve just taken inspo from Heavy Artillery, who by tradition have all their works anon for the first week.

This is for two main reasons as far as i know; first, to kind of level the playing field in a sense, basically giving the work the right to stand on their own legs and to make sure people don’t just read (for example) the works from people they already know and like and ignore the others. Since we have creators here who are incredibly good but maybe haven’t had the time to build up that exposure, we figured it could be a nice option. Second is that it gives the option for trying to guess who made what, and that can be kinda fun! Trying to suss out who wrote what fic etc.”

However, we are aware that for non-writers, AO3 might not be the best place to share a work, so non-writers are exempt from the anonymity rule!

This means that from July 30th, if you’re (for example) an artist, you are free to post your artwork on tumblr, instagram or whatever platform you’re most comfortable with!

content creator year in review

jTagged by @j-pping, than you for tagging me ☀️

first creation and most recent creation of 2020: I started this year with The Bee and the Fly and I’m closing the year with Only on the weekends. Both AU, my favorite concept.

one of your favorite creations from 2020: Extra Shift. I loved writing it, and it was something quite new for me. I wrote a very charming but not perfect Kyung Soo and a very not perfect OC. Also I got to use one of my trips like inspo and my short experience working at the ICU. It felt a lot like a drama.

a creation you’re really proud of: The Bee and the Fly. I poured my feelings on it. I tried to write about common situations, childhood, moving to another city, starting university, family crisis, etc. It was a story that change A LOT from the original draft, for the best. Writing Nini’s character was such a pleasure, as describing their different art expressions (Kyung Soo’s sculptures, OC’s stories and Nini’s dancing).

a new style you tried this year and a gifset/fic that uses it : Mmmm….short stories I guess?? Secretary Do was a simple story where I just wanted to write a secretary story where the woman was the boss. Which hardly happens. So I kept it short and sexy. It was so fun to write, and came out great. Got a lot of love too.

a creation that took you forever: Only in the weekends, my most recent one. Oh man, took so long. Not because I can’t write or lack of inspiration, the whole story is ready in my head. But I’m so distracted and with so much work.

your creation from 2020 that received the most notes: I posted three stories this year. Each with a different amount of chapters. So I did some math and the one that got more notes is Extra Shift, with five chapters. But Secretary Do got more than 100 notes per chapter. So, numbers I guess.

a creation you think deserved more notes: At this point I don’t care about notes, but I do wish for more feedback. Even a thumbs up it’s enough.

a new fandom you joined and a creation you made for it: None. Still just Kyung Soo.

a creation you made that breaks your heart: I got a bit teary eyed writing The Bee and the Fly.

a ‘simple’ creation that you really love: Not simple, but I love Extra Shift. I was reading the last chapter the other day and ugh, I’m so gooooood.

a creation that was inspired by another one: None really. But there are a lot of dialogs inspired by music.

a favorite creation created by someone else: A bunch. Nia’s Flambé, god damn it is so good!! The rhythm was perfect, the story, the food. Just amazingness. @yeoldontknow The edge of summer. I cried because it was so gorgeous. One of those stories that makes you wish you could write like that. This one is not from this year, but I read it this year so whateverrrrrr. Steph’s Cosmic Shift. Dude, I still think about it. Such a rich story, amazing scenes, such poetry. Also, Allotrope by @softly-savage-mint-yoongi it’s quite hard to find an Idolverse story that’s not cringey. This one is very sexy, strangers to lovers is always *Chef kiss* and the writing is great.

what's the difference between copying and taking reference from?

this is an odd question? i’m not sure i’m like qualified to answer this lol

- many gfx makers will use professional work as reference. I guess this is taking inspo from pinterest or behance and looking up to tutorials that explain how to execute certain effects? 99% of us aren’t professionals, so making something is trial and error and relying on skills someone else has presumably used before? especially when you’re starting out. personally I haven’t used pinterest or tutorials in the past months but I can definitely point out panels that I made thanks to tutorials.

- copying...is more like remaking a set someone else has done? if i make a gfx and someone redoes the same gfx by picking the same elements, colors, characters etc? or redoing a gifset by picking the exact same scenes, the same frames, using the same ideas?

WISTCRIA’S GUIDE TO PLOTTING.

I was joking when I made a post asking if anyone needed a guide to plotting, but the response was surprisingly positive, so here I go! I’ve never really written a writing guide before, so bare with me as I do my best! QUICK DISCLAIMER: this is just my advice from experience and personal opinion!

Plotting is a pretty universal thing, regardless of whether you’re a 1x1 rper, a group roleplayer, or writing on indie. However, this guide will be more geared towards indie and group roleplayers, as 1x1 roleplayers automatically get a lot of plotting done when coming up with their plot.

Without further ado, here’s my guide to plotting!

01. JUMPING INTO IT: I wish there was a better way to describe and explain this but there’s no better way to plot than simply approaching someone and doing one of two things: a) offering up some base ideas you had or b) asking if there’s ever been any plot for their muse(s) they’ve always wanted to do that your own character(s) can fulfill. This is easiest when you find either a commonality between muses, or a key difference. Plots and threads move best when there is action or tension in a thread. This can be literal, as in an argument based on this difference, or prompted by a shared interest. For example, were I writing Ariel and trying to plot with an Aladdin, I might mention that they both are outcasts in a sense and perhaps that can be something we develop together. Alternatively, I might mention that because Ariel is a mermaid and Aladdin lives on land, maybe their cultural differences inspire misunderstandings!

( A quick note on reciprocation: I’m going to touch on this later but roleplay is a two way street. I’ve seen many people complain about not having plots when I know for a fact they don’t reach out to others. Always try to reflect on the last time you approached someone for a plot: if you’re noticing that your friends are always approaching you, then there’s something to consider there. )

02. BACK AND FORTH HCS. This is the quickest and easiest way to get into the groove with a new writing partner. In a lot of ways, plotting is a form of improv, and nothing helps it more than the yes, and rule. When your partner proposes something, try to always build on it! If it’s out of character, always make note of that and let them know, but provide an alternative course of action so that the conversation is always generating something you can build on in your threads. Your goal here is to develop rich character dynamics, interpersonal development and learn more about your muse! Back and forth headcanoning can look something like this:

RPER 1: omg imagine them just comparing stories together? RPER 2: YES! Talking about both feeling outcasted? RPER 1: yess and like, ariel would just feel so seen and I could see her also just being so shook over all that sand everywhere like if they went into the dessert or flied on the carpet? RPER 2: ngl I don’t think aladdin would fly the carpet with someone other than jasmine, but they can definitely go riding in the dessert! RPER 1: nice!! i can’t wait to write this :D

And there you’ve developed a neat idea for a first thread without having to deal with all the awkward first meeting niceties.

03. GATHERING INSPO. One of the things that helps most is finding external inspiration and using it as a source for a plot, for character motivations or behavior. For example, if I was writing Ariel against Aladdin, I might send them gifsets to spur conversation, which often leads into effortless back and forth headcanoning. If you’re lacking inspiration think of your favorite shows, songs, movies, books... think of all the worlds you wish you lived in and apply them to your character. If you’re really stuck, try a random plot generator / scene generator. Pick a random word from the dictionary and try to build a scenario around it!

04. A FEW TIPS ON WHAT TO AVOID. Nothing kills the mood faster than an unresponsive partner. Having been there myself, it feels terrible when you’re the only one who seems to be putting in the effort. Don’t expect your partner to be the only one with ideas. Even if it’s something silly, don’t be shy! A silly idea can grow into something really cool and unique if you give it a shot, and even if it’s silly, those are often the most fun threads! Also, try not to respond with “filler responses” such as “oh bet” and “it be like that” and Good God please not, “haha yes”. Like, I know we say these words a lot, but they don’t contribute anything to the conversation, and from experience I can say they’re very disheartening and can often make your partner feel like they’re pulling all the work.

05. AN ADDITIONAL NOTE. Sometimes there will come a day where the people you plot with won’t be all that responsive. It happens! If you come across the dreaded deadpan responses, don’t take it to heart. There can be a number of reasons why. And sometimes people are bad responders: try to be patient and in the mean time, focus your energy on plotting with other people who are more readily available!

FINALLY, all I can say is treat plotting a little like making a new friend. Approach the situation wanting to learn more about your partner’s characters. Roleplay is a two way street, and what you give out will usually be returned back at you. Every person is different and will have a different plotting style, but hopefully with these few things in mind, plotting with others will be just a teenier bit easier.
