Oya’s Betrayal
Oya’s Betrayal tells a Yoruba tale, a patakí, about a relationship between orishas Ogun, Oya, and Shango in a Renaissance style. Harmonia Rosales was inspired by artistic depictions of the Roman myth of Vulcan, Venus, and Mars.

You don't step on me twice
You can't step into the same water twice
Remember?
the water follows
And me too
Ora YêYê, Oxum. Odoyá, Yemanja. It's just love. Have mercy on us.

Large spiritual goddesses and deities of significance right now: ISIS, Hecate, Lilith, and some Orishas like Osun especially that might be specific for you based on your lineage or ethnic background. That one falls into resonance with me as well, I know I have some ethnic ties to Nigeria but I’m uneducated about orishas or Nigerian culture and spirituality unfortunately, but anyways, ancestors and powerful divine feminine deities are calling!
If you’re a divine feminine being they want all your power where your power belongs in the palm of your hand, do not give it away any longer I just heard.
There’s heavy energetic and social transition within the divine feminine and divine masculine collective, I touched briefly a long time ago about the divine feminine collective awakening and divine masculines followed close behind some time after that. But those who are being left behind are acting up and I mentioned that already and that is apparent right now, stand your ground on your boundaries and what you want moving forward especially you divine feminines. The world was not always like this, this is a world that’s kept turning spiritually and energetically by the divine feminine herself and our societies used to mirror that. Pull that energy into fruition moving forward.

yoruba mythology: ajá
ajá was the orisha of the forest, the animals within it and herbal healers. in her forests she would find plants with medicinal properties and mix the herbs and roots and other plant parts together to find cures for the sick. ajá shared much of her knowledge with humans waiting for someone to come and find her to share it with. this person was usually a shaman in training, or someone of the like.

Idk if anyone has said this, but I am 99% sure Buttons is not saying "balmy water" at the end of episode 4, but that he is addressing Mama Wata, an African goddess of the sea. Pretty sure instead of "(reciting incantation)," he's also calling out to Yemaja, aka Yemaya, aka Yemanjá, aka Lemanja, who is also an African and Latin diaspora spirit/goddess/mother of the sea (simplified).
I was thrilled to hear those names here, so I hope they update the closed captioning, if true. I love that these writers give 0 shits about historical accuracy, but do care enough about cultural inclusivity to mention Orishas and non-western based spirituality in a way that isn't threatening or scary or demeaning.

“Oba” by Harmonia Rosales.
This is the orisha Obá and the painting is about one of the myths regarding her and her ear.
Rosales is an Afro-Latinx artist whose work is featured in museums such as the Smithsonian Museum of African American History and Culture.
The color and the depiction of that fabric, and the way it highlights the deep brown of her skin is just gorgeous. And her face. The look in her eyes and the hint of a smile. It’s Everything. It’s all just Everything.
I highly recommend that you check out the exhibition brochure for “Entwined”, that was at the University of California, Santa Barbara from January-May 2022.
(Here is a quick walkthrough of the exhibit. Here is part of a talk the art gave about the art.)
Happy Saturday!

Iansã/Oyá:
Iansã is one of the strongest and most important female Orixás in African mythology. She is considered the goddess of winds, storms and fire, representing strength and change. It is usually associated with the color red or brown, which symbolize strength and power.
In African mythology, Iansã is the wife of Xangô and is known for her courage and bravery. She is a warrior and protector Orisha, capable of bringing positive changes in her children's lives. It is a symbol of transformation, renewal and courage to face life's challenges.
Iansã is worshiped in several regions of Brazil, especially in Bahia. It is common to offer offerings such as candles, flowers, perfumes and swords to the goddess. It is believed that Iansã is capable of bringing protection, strength and courage to those who seek it.
The importance of Iansã in Afro-Brazilian culture is undeniable, being a symbol of strength, change and courage to face life's challenges.

Nanã and Shangô by Kypris Aquarelas
Prints available at society6!
______________________________________________________________
