Today's compilation:
Atlantic Rhythm & Blues 1947-1974 - Japanese Edition 2012 R&B / Doo Wop / Soul / Rock & Roll / Funk / Jazz / Blues / Pop
Alright, well, I had originally planned for this post to dovetail quite nicely with the end of Black History Month, but when you get a virus, it has a way of setting things back a bit. But then again, Black History should obviously be celebrated in every month, so either way, without further ado, here's a massive end to my foray into the history of Atlantic Records: a deeply comprehensive recounting of its first 27 years in the record business called Atlantic Rhythm & Blues: 1947-1974.
Now, maybe because of how this label is currently constituted, you think of Atlantic as being among the amorphous blob of major record labels whose fingers are seemingly in the pies of every popular genre, and the quality of the output is barely distinguishable from its other competitors. Like, who cares who's on Atlantic these days, right? A major label is a major label is a major label. They all basically feel indistinguishable from one another at this point, don't they?
But here's what you may not know about Atlantic in particular. For about two decades, until they started signing rock bands like Led Zeppelin, they were almost exclusively dedicated to nothing but secular, black-made music. And that's originally how they ended up making a name for themselves, as an independent label for black musicians that actually had a reputation for usually compensating their artists fairly.
So in 1985, the first iteration of Atlantic Rhythm & Blues 1947-1974 hit the shelves. It consisted of a whopping *186 songs*, chronologically spread across 14 separate records or 7 cassettes. And then in '91, it was reissued on CD in an 8-disc set, with an extra 17 songs mixed within.
But this edition that I have for you all today is a much, much rarer one that was issued exclusively in Japan in 2012. And what it consists of is the same eight discs from the 1991 reissue, plus two more, which have songs on it that were handpicked by Japan's own super selector, Keishi Suzuki, who ends up supplying 52 more songs—a lot of them rarities—bringing the total amount of tracks within the release to a grand total of *255*! 😯
Now, obviously, that is a whole lot of music, and I'm not gonna write an ungodly amount of paragraphs to cover it all, but regarding the first discs in this box set, what I'll say is this: these are must-listens for any old school r&b/soul/doo wop novice or junkie out there. These CDs do a wonderful job of allowing you to take a bird's eye view of this label that managed to develop itself into an indefatigable powerhouse for popular black music. From its earliest days of jazzy and jump-bluesy instrumentals, to its deeper endeavors into soul, you can trace this label's contours and get a feel for just how eminent its entire existence has been upon the history of popular music writ large. From its first star Ruth Brown—who helped earn the label its clever, Yankee Stadium-inspired nickname of 'The House That Ruth Built'—to Ray Charles, to The Drifters, to Otis Redding, to Wilson Pickett, and to the Queen of Soul herself, Aretha Franklin; it's all in those first 8 discs.
But those final two Keishi Suzuki-curated CDs are the ones I'm here to write about especially today, because a whole bunch of these total obscurities are, really, absolutely phenomenal.
Like, maybe you're familiar with 60s soul-man Don Covay, who had a solid number of Billboard Hot 100 and R&B chart hits in his career, and also penned Aretha Franklin's own mega hit, "Chain of Fools." But did you know that Covay actually started out under the name of 'Pretty Boy' and performed with a raucous Little Richard-esque rock & roll flair? Suzuki provides "Bip Bop Bip" here, an energetic tune with scratchy, throaty shouts, mashing hi-hats, and an electrifying saxophone solo. And it was actually produced by Little Richard himself!
Then there's Lawrence & The Arabians (what a fucking name, man), a short-lived all-white group, who in 1967 released the outstanding "I'll Try Harder," a fully uptempo and poppy piece of horn-heavy blue-eyed soul that sounds partially cut from some type of Motown cloth. Delightful gem right there.
And lastly, we have Peggy Scott, a pretty well-known southern soul and R&B entity in her own right who managed to make the American top 40 thrice in the late 60s. But after she stopped charting, Scott ended up releasing just one single on Atlantic—through their Atco sublabel—and in 1972, on that single's B-side, she showed that she could still more than hack it with the fantastic "One Night Is All I Need," on which her voice is striking all throughout, but is especially so whenever she goes for that gravelly passion 😌.
And these final two discs in this set have more underappreciated stunners on them too, but we're done here. This is such an excellent release that I shelled out a pretty pretty penny for, and I'm ultimately glad I did, because while the easier-to-find editions of this thing are cheaper and deeply satisfying themselves, nothing beats the thrill of being exposed to underheard gems that not very many other people know about. And in that regard, Keishi Suzuki knocked his task way out of the park.
A magnificent album, both for its extensive chronologizing of one of the most important labels in the history of popular music, as well as its extra 50+ songs that get some much needed light shone upon them too.

One thing that feels increasingly made up is the fact that in my early childhood oldies music meant 1950s-60s. Legit doo-wop on the radio. Logically I understand this is how time works and yet

So I've been massively obsessed with listening to FNAF songs lately I'm definitely very mentally well about it, ah. anywAYYY
Music headcanons about what the egos listen to??? 😁 Feel free to do as many as you want to, but I'm most curious about Murdock, Illinois, engineer Mark, and Wilford. (Also, I have some idea of what's in ur brain with Dark, but any more details would be welcome~) (Also also, Y a n c y)
Murdock - Industrial and Aggrotech are his shit, but also very much into Power Metal and Rock, the heavier the better. Appreciates Classical and Jazz, though prefers songs that sound more brooding and ominous in both cases.
Illinois - Definitely listens to and enjoys all sorts of cultural folk songs and the like native to the places he visits in his travels. Indie, Blues, and Jazz round out his typical tastes. People who don't know him tend to assume he'll like Country music, but he can't say he cares much for it.
Wilford - Disco is a very obvious choice here and it is true, but Wilford's been around for quite a while and has an appreciation for pretty much all types of music. He does, however, have quite a strong fondness specifically for Electroswing.
Engineer - Listens to a lot of sub-genres of Electronic and EDM. Like Wilford, a big fan of Electroswing, and also likes Chiptune a lot. Will put on heavier music like Industrial when he's angry or frustrated and trying to work something out. If he gets too strung out, though, he'll find some sort of rain or - especially after the Wormhole Incident - heartbeat ambience to put on and go decompress. Preferably with the Captain nearby.
Yancy - Musicals is really on the nose but also so very apt. Also Rock'n'Roll, Rockabilly, and Doo-wop, considering the whole 'greaser' vibes he's got. Also likes some sub-genres of Rock and Alternative. Doesn't actively dislike any genre of music, even if it's something that isn't to his tastes. Boy just loves music too much.
Damien/Dark - Classical, Oldies, and some Blues and Jazz are all very obvious and fitting picks (all moony and lovesick), but only very close friends and family know that he also adores Metal, with Symphonic Metal being his favorite of the genre. You'd be hard-pressed to catch him listening to it, though, especially after the events of the Party. It reminds him a little too much of a certain someone who used to listen to and play it with him...
Bonus (cause his music taste jumped out at me):
Bing - Vaporwave and Chiptune are his favorites, but he likes almost all kinds of Electronic and EDM. Always surprises people when they find him listening to Industrial music and its sub-genres, of which Dark Electro is his go-to.
[Partially me projecting really hard here, partially honestly striking me as making sense, but I can see pretty much all the Egos enjoying Post Rock. Some more than others, and some only when they want something to help them wind down, but still.]

Today's compilation:
Baby Boomer Classics: Groovin' Sixties 1987 Pop-Rock / R&B / Soul / Blue-Eyed Soul / Doo Wop
Well, this one was kinda fun and unexpected. Here we have Groovin' Sixties, a comp with a title so vague that you couldn't possibly glean a coherent theme from its name besides the decade that it deals in. Every other title that I've gone through in this Baby Boomer Classics series thus far has been pretty self-explanatory with regards to the type of music that's on each one (British Sixties, Electric Sixties, Folk Sixties, Dance Sixties, etc., etc.), but this release appears to be different.
And that's because the thing that actually links all of these songs together is not really their sound at all, but the labels that released them: Heritage and Colossus, a pair of short-lived labels that existed from the late 60s through early 70s that were both run by a guy named Jerry Ross, whose biggest claim to fame is probably making the song "Venus," by Dutch group Shocking Blue, a mega-hit after spending some time in Europe looking for songs to bring to a US market. And he managed to score a big ol' #1 for himself with that tune!
So while these Baby Boomer Classics albums have been doing a pretty ample job thus far of weaving big hits together with smaller ones, this release in particular has a very different focus; and it makes no indication of this focus anywhere on its front or back covers, but it's clearly to highlight some very good singles from Jerry Ross' two labels, regardless of where those songs may or may not have ended up charting. And while it's a departure from what this series typically offers, you all know that I'm relishing at this opportunity to hear some totally forgotten and unheard gems here 😎.
But before I get to a great tune that doesn't appear to have ever made the Billboard Hot 100 chart at all, let me talk about a blue-eyed soul group from the city of Portsmouth, Virginia called Bill Deal & the Rhondels. This group, who became a big fixture of the Carolina beach scene and circuit, managed to chart five times between 1969 and 1970, and three of those hits appear on this album. Two out of those three strike me especially, though, because both "May I" and "I've Been Hurt," which were Bill Deal & the Rhondels' first two singles to chart (at #39 and #35, respectively), seem to be deliberately complementing their blue-eyed soul with underlying Jamaican ska riddims, with an instrument constantly hitting the same note on every other beat. And both of these songs are made catchily remarkable—and also Carolina shaggable!—because of this neat quirk.
Now, I really don't think that many American bands were incorporating ska into their own sound all the way back in the late 60s—much less white bands—but maybe I've found where Bill Deal & the Rhondels actually managed to derive that Jamaican inspiration from in the first place. See, both "May I" and "I've Been Hurt" are actually covers, and while the original version of "May I," which was by Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs—whose classic, "Stay," is the shortest song to ever top the Billboard Hot 100—had no ska in it and no known covers before Bill Deal & the Rhondels made their own version, "I've Been Hurt" had a whole handful of covers before BD&R got around to releasing theirs. And one of them, by Jamaican legend Delroy Wilson, was a reggae version that came out in '68.
To be clear, though, because the timelines here are so murky, I really have no idea if Wilson's rendition was even made before Bill Deal & the Rhondels started to implement ska, and I don't know if BD&R were even aware that the Wilson version ever existed in the first place either; but being that "May I," the first of these two BD&R singles with some ska in It, appears to have a recording date in July of 1968, and Wilson's version of "I've Been Hurt" was released on an unknown date that same year, it opens up a possibility that Bill Deal & the Rhondels hatched their ska idea for "May I" after hearing Delroy Wilson's reggae cover of "It Hurts."
What's funny though is that Bruce Eder at AllMusic tries to explain that "May I" had actually been performed by Bill Deal & the Rhondels for quite some time before they eventually made their debut with it; in fact, they'd actually dropped it from their set before someone shouted it out as a request, and they then decided, right on the spot, to put their own spin on the tune, which led to their popular ska-infused studio recording. But for some reason, in Eder's write-up, he doesn't refer to that performance as incorporating ska, but rather polka. And I'm sorry, folks, but that's not polka on that song! It's pretty clearly ska!
Anyhoo, I promised you all a gem that didn't chart on the Hot 100, and it's a great, uplifting soul tune by a group called The Festivals, whose "You're Gonna Make It" only managed to peak at #99 on the chart of Billboard's biggest competitor, Cashbox. And if you weren't from the New Jersey/Philly area when it first came out in 1970, you've probably never heard it at all!
So this album appears to have been an aberration in the Baby Boomer Classics series overall, but clearly it gave me plenty to write about today! And I should also note that even though the title is Groovin' Sixties, not everything on here is actually from that decade. This series seems to have a real problem with keeping track of release dates, but my nerdy, eagle-eyed ass is keeping on top of it all 🤓.
Highlights:
Shocking Blue - "Venus" Bill Deal & the Rhondels - "May I" George Baker Selection - "Little Green Bag" Bill Deal & the Rhondels - "I've Been Hurt" The Festivals - "You're Gonna Make It"

when i worked at shoprite at some point they switched from a work playlist to this one doo wop/oldies CD which meant i was listening to the same doo wop songs every single day at work. every day for literal years. they kept playing it for years after i quit, even after switching to a new location. they only stopped about a year ago i think.
now i LIKE old music. i like, even LOVE a lot of the songs on that CD. the thing was i was listening to them on a tinny speaker every single shift i had at a miserable job that i hated. so to this day when i hear just one look or mama said or judy's turn to cry etc it's like. okay how do i stop immediately picturing fluorescent lighting on end caps of cereal

Twilight Advent, Day 9
Masterpost/prompts
Dec. 9 - What music does Jacob like to listen to while working on cars? Oldies. Doo wop and early Motown. Four Tops, the Del-Vikings, all of that era. His mother used to listen to it and sing it to him when he was little.
When the rest of the pack (or anyone ele) shows up, he would switch it quickly to Linkin Park or Paramore or Fall Out Boy so that they never asked questions. But one day long after canon, Edward catches him working and singing "Sh-Boom" with his earbuds in and it's one more tiny piece of their bonding that unfolds over the ensuing decade and a half.
