I’m so excited to post this story today! It is written for the @mlsecretsanta 2019 Secret Santa event for the lovely @ladybuginettes!!  This story would not be in the shape that it is in without the help of @floraone and @tinacentury for all their aid and feedback! 

This is a fic where they both know (Almost immediately! Promise!), but can’t openly talk about it. ... 

Chapter 1 (of Four): A Revelation

Adrien had never understood his relationship with Marinette, but after knowing her for two years, the dynamic was comfortable. He had no explanation for her tendency to make word soup or sounds of astonishment in his presence, and only his presence as far as he could tell. It was easy to be patient with her when her antics made him feel warm. He had long ago stopped feeling awkward around her sometimes strange behavior. And as a bonus, Adrien had gotten amazingly skilled at deciphering whatever she was saying, maybe even better than Alya at this point. He secretly coveted the moments when he caught her off guard because her eyes would get so big and they were the loveliest shade of blue - the same shade as the sky on a cloudless day. So even though he didn’t understand it, he considered her to be one of his closest friends. He relied on their dynamic; he treasured it. She was one of the most consistent sources of inspiration for his smiles, and she often gave him a warm fuzzy feeling. She made him feel like he had come home. He didn’t even feel that way when he went to his actual home. But that week, something had shifted, and that adorable stuttering Marinette that he counted on for those warm squishy feelings every day vanished overnight. And some doppelgänger Marinette had taken her place. That Monday, she had walked in and said good morning as smoothly as a pebble polished over centuries of crashing waves, her eyes dancing in amusement rather than panicked nerves. Then she had winked at him and walked away with a little sway in her hips. Winked!

Even her tendency to trip over her own feet had disappeared, and he found himself missing his encounters with her stumbling down the stairs or the moments when his or her papers scattered to the floor like confetti after an unexpected collision. He no longer had an excuse to catch her or help her up. How else was he supposed to touch her without invading her personal space? Instead, she offered eyerolls, smirks, and finger guns. Actual finger guns! He had no idea what to think! On a few occasions, her eyes seemed to convey entire paragraphs of information - willing, begging him to understand. He couldn’t interpret any of it. Her behavior felt familiar, so familiar, but he couldn’t put his finger on it. It was like struggling to remember a vivid dream that evaporated upon waking like a drop of water on a hot desert stone. The sudden shift in their interactions left Adrien feeling uncertain and off balance. In class, he could feel her gaze on the back of his neck, and it was all he could do to stop himself from spinning in his seat to consider the new enigma she had become. During breaks and passing periods, his eyes always found her, and it was becoming increasingly difficult to focus. Today, he was supposed to be helping the class decorate the school courtyard for the Christmas season. He, Rose, Mylene, Nino, and Alya had been assigned to the railings along the stairs and second floor. Rose stood on the ladder above him, pinning up strings of lights and paper streamers, and he was supposed to be handing her the adhesives whenever she needed them. But his attention was on the girl wearing twin pigtails across the courtyard with a clipboard in her hand directing others in their mission of creating a more festive learning environment. A sharp flick to his ear tore him from his thoughts. “Ow!” “Pay attention, Sunshine!” Alya scolded. “Rose has called you like three times!” “She has?” he repeated dumbly, looking up apologetically at the girl above him on the ladder. “I’m sorry, Rose. I don’t know where my head is today.” “It’s okay,” Rose assured. And then she giggled. “It looks like your head is over there with Marinette!” Alya smirked, and his cheeks burned at the observation. He resolved to stay focused, dutifully and mindlessly handing Rose and the others whatever they needed when they needed it. Thirty minutes later, they had the whole railing and wall behind the stairs decked out in shiny glittery red, green, and gold decor, and Adrien had long ago mastered the ability to carry out instructions mindlessly while his brain continued to ponder the girl who sat behind him in class. He didn’t notice the ball that Kim had thrown had hit the ladder. He didn’t notice the ladder rocking precariously back and forth, and he didn’t notice that the hinge was slipping upward instead of staying in its locked down position. He did hear Marinette scream his name. “Adrien! The pen!” Several things clicked in that moment, and time seemed to slow down as if he were in an akuma battle. The ladder was collapsing, and Rose was going to fall. He was on the wrong side of the ladder to catch her. Adrien’s eyes flew to the pen in Alya’s hand as she and Nino looked on in horror. He grabbed the pen and wedged it into the ladder’s hinge, as he kicked the ladder’s base, causing it to tip in the other direction toward him. Rose lost her balance and fell right into his arms with a startled squeak. “Oh my god! You’re the best, Adrien!” Juleka exclaimed, already prying her girlfriend from his arms almost the second she had landed there. Everyone in the courtyard had started clapping at the unlikely rescue. “Adrien!” Alya gushed, even as she high-fived him. “That was amazing!” “It was Marinette’s idea,” Adrien deflected, his hand rubbing absently at the back of his neck. “Adrien! I’m so glad you were there. I couldn’t get there in time,” Marinette said with a relieved smile. “Anytime, Mari,” he said with a grin, offering his fist. She met it with one of her own and a pleased smirk before she walked away and went back to directing their peers now that the disaster had been averted. “Dude! That was some quick thinking!” Nino praised from behind his shoulder. Adrien shrugged. “It was Marinette’s plan. I just executed it.” “What plan?! She literally said two words!” Adrien shrugged. It was just like he always understood Ladybug’s extravagant plans from very few context clues. But of course, he couldn’t tell Nino that he had had a lot of practice understanding Ladybug. The thought was like being struck by lightning. He whirled around toward Marinette. She smiled at him. He couldn’t smile back. He stared at her like the dumb blond model that he was often accused of being. Everything this week had felt so familiar, so right, because it was. His jaw was on the floor, and his eyes were open as wide as saucers. He couldn’t have strung two words together at that point, which was just as well because it probably would have said the wrong thing and ruined both their identities, and she’d be pissed at him for all of eternity. Something shifted in her expression. And her warm open Marinette smile transformed into Ladybug’s grin. He was looking at Ladybug right now. In her civilian clothes. That she made herself, no less! He knew Ladybug’s name! How many times had he seen that exact expression? The upturn of just one side of her lips, one cheek slightly puffed out, her eyes dancing in amusement at whatever dumb joke he had just told? A calm washed over him as the shock and panic receded, replaced by a tranquil certainty. Really, who else could Ladybug have been? It was so obvious; he couldn’t understand how he had never seen it before. And it wasn’t something he could unsee or unlearn. Their eyes met. They locked gazes, and she nodded. She had already figured it out. Approximately a week ago, judging by when nervous Marinette had disappeared. “Dude!” Nino prodded, poking him in the shoulder. “You okay?” “Y-yeah,” Adrien managed, tearing his eyes away from his classmate, his partner, the love of his life, toward Nino, trying not to show the giddy joy that was flooding his system. He had found his lady. And he couldn’t say anything! And not just because they were in the courtyard surrounded by their classmates. He literally couldn’t say anything! Not to Marinette! Not even to Plagg, who had confided two weeks prior that Master Fu was growing increasingly paranoid since the location of his home and hideout had been compromised. Their master had apparently decided that Chat Noir and Ladybug would have to give up their miraculouses if they ever discovered each other’s identities. It wasn’t fair! Why couldn’t this have happened like three weeks ago? But really, it was his own fault. How could he have been so blind? So oblivious for so long?! Adrien was lost once again in his own swirling thoughts. He didn’t know how he made it back to class, in the front row next to Nino like he did every single day after the lunch break. But every hair on the back of his neck went on high alert when Marinette came in only to take a seat behind him… like she did every single day. It’s just Marinette! But it wasn’t. It could never be just Marinette again. That was Ladybug sitting behind him, able to notice every misplaced blond lock of hair, every wrinkle in his overshirt, every time he dropped his pencil or bounced his knees in absolute boredom. So naturally, he was extra fidgety today. Even Ms. Bustier noticed. “Adrien,” she said, a gentle hand on his shoulder. “Are you all right?” “Fine!” he croaked around the lumpy ball in his throat. “I just had too much caffeine this morning,” he lied easily, as if his whole world hadn’t been knocked completely out of orbit. Ms. Bustier smiled pleasantly and continued to move through the classroom as they all started their reading. He tried to focus on the passage. He really did. But it was a lost cause. There was just no space for the story to enter his head when his brain was already full of his own spiraling thoughts. Ladybug was Marinette. How many times had he called Marinette “just a friend”? Plagg had given him such a hard time every time he said that. The little bastard had known! God, he wanted to strangle the little black kwami. Marinette was the love of his life! And he could not be more happy about it! She was so amazing! She was passionate, creative, and someone who actively stood up for others. God, he had looked up to her before he had known about her alter ego. Now, she was so completely out of his league. He slumped down into his seat as his euphoria crashed as low as he had been high seconds before at that revelation. Because what reason did Marinette have to like him? What did he have to offer someone like her besides emotional baggage and lame jokes? Plus, Marinette liked someone. His eyes scanned the rest of the class. Was it someone he knew? No one here popped out at him for holding Marinette’s attention. Maybe it was someone she knew from elsewhere. He tried to stamp out that line of thinking! He had told her before he would respect her feelings. He would! As impossible as that sometimes felt, he knew he wasn’t entitled to her attention just because they had both been chosen. He knew that he wasn’t entitled to any of it, even though he wanted her favor more than anything. But right now, they had other pressing concerns. Because they both knew. (At least, he was pretty sure). They weren’t supposed to, and if Plagg or Tikki found out, they’d have to give up their miraculouses. And he couldn’t give up being Chat Noir. He couldn’t go back to being locked up in his room alone with no outlet for release. Not now that he knew what freedom tasted like. The bell rang, and the sudden burst of activity as everyone packed up left him reeling. Marinette was already halfway out the door. But they needed to talk. “Marinette!” he called after her as he slammed his tablet into his bag, moved around the desk, and took a few quick strides to catch up with her where she had stopped at his call of her name. “Yeah?” she asked, her blue eyes were soft, so deep, and so very familiar. How had he never recognized them before? She was smiling at him with genuine affection; it made him feel warm. “I was w-wondering if… uh…” Great. Now he was the one stuttering… “Yes?” she prompted patiently, one side of her mouth upturned in an amused smirk. “Could we grab some coffee together?” His fingers twitched, and his stomach fluttered with nerves. God, it was hard to look at her. Her lips parted. “Not a date!” He rapidly corrected before she could respond. He couldn’t handle adding another no to his growing list of rejections at the moment. Her smile lost some of its luster, her shoulders stiffened, and her gaze glanced past him. God, had he screwed this up already? Was she angry that he knew her identity? It had always been so important to her. “You want to get coffee?” she repeated. “When?” “I… ummm… now?” His hand rubbed the back of his neck. “I wanted to talk to you about something.” “Of course,” she agreed readily enough, but her voice had dropped to a whisper, and her eyes remained glued to the floor. All of her warmth from seconds ago had evaporated. They walked together two blocks to a nearby coffee shop. Not a word was exchanged. His skin buzzed in nerves at the awkward silence. He could not for the life of him figure out why this was suddenly so hard. This was Ladybug. They saw each other every day. She had seen him trip over his own feet, chase laser pointers, and she had caught him from falling off a building. He trusted her more than he trusted himself. They had rapport. And banter. So why couldn’t he say two words to her now? They ordered their drinks. He had offered to pay, but Marinette insisted on separate checks. They finally settled on either side of a small table against a large window, the cold emanating from it encouraging them to keep their coats on. “So… what did you want to talk about?” Marinette finally prompted in the silence, her hands wrapped around the hot cocoa as if to warm them. Her eyes stared blankly out the window. And for the millionth time that day, Adrien had no idea what to say. He hadn’t thought this through at all. They were in a public place and he was keenly aware of the kwami nestled comfortably in his jacket. He had never thought there’d be a time when he wished the kwami wasn’t present. “I… uh… well, I r-realized today…” And for the first time in thirty minutes, her expression softened. She reached across the table and captured his fidgeting fingers and calmed them with a gentle squeeze. “It’s okay,” she whispered. Her fingers stroked his hand, tracing phantom patterns onto his exposed skin, and a second later he realized her fingers slid over his ring. His miraculous. And then she repeated the pattern. His eyes met hers, and she nodded. That was as much confirmation as he needed. He glanced at her earrings while he pulled his other hand to his own ear, and gently tugged on his own earlobe as if he was merely scratching an itch. She nodded again. And finally, his internal storm abated, and he only felt calm. Things were obviously different, and they had to find a new dynamic, but he was always okay when he was with her. Together, they could get through anything. “Well see,” he started for the kwamis’ benefit, proud of how steady he held his voice. “I can’t actually say. I wasn’t thinking. It’s somebody else’s secret, so I can’t talk about it. I shouldn’t have said anything about it to you at all.” “That’s okay,” she said with a smile. It was small, but it was genuine once again. “I know exactly what you mean.” “This is really happening, right?” The question burst from him without thought. He knew he was pushing it. Plagg wasn’t an idiot and he assumed Tikki wasn’t either, but he had to ask. She giggled. “Let’s have lunch! And we can talk about anything and everything that is not a secret.” He smiled. “That sounds amazing!”

i. if you could change the genre of one of your wips, what would you change it to and how would the story/characters change?

So, trahison already features a ghost and a brief stay at a manor. have i considered turning it into a full fledged horror because of that? perhaps.

ii. do you think of your characters as actors playing a part in a movie or as people in history actually doing things that effect the future?

i think of them as actors playing in one long, crazy, unpredictable play. 

iii. role swap your protagonist and antagonist but keep their personalities the same; how different would your story be?

honestly, not different at all, because when it comes to it, the subject of trahison’s antagonist (s) is pretty complex. 

iv. are any of your characters based on you, family, friends, or someone else you know?

oh, absolutely. my characters range between self inserts, to characters i wish i was more like, to characters that are essentially walking, talking, breathing love letters to the people i care about.  

v. how long have you had your main protagonist(s) of your wip(s)?

I’ve been working with marin, nate and ruby for years, long before they were even called that and were a part of a dystopian crime novel (don’t ask). antoine joined them soon after, followed a while later by beth and isadora, and miles was invented during the plotting stage. 

vi. do you prefer to write chronologically or just make a bunch of scenes and order them after they’re written?

it depends on what i’m working on and how serious i am about it, but if we’re only talking about trahison, then chronologically!

vii. imagine the problem in your wip is sorted out, how would the protagonist recount the story to their children if they asked?

with a far away look in his eyes and an uncharacteristic fondness in his voice, marin would turn to his children, and tell them how extraordinary his friends were during his university years—their zeal, their inquisitiveness, and conveniently leaving out the uncomfortable loyalty they all had towards each other, until time and life’s commands separated them. 

viii. favorite (non-spoilery) line(s) of your current wip(s)?

This small bit of description, albeit a little purple prose-y, is one that i’m very, very proud of.

“ The morning rain had made its grave in the dirt, the bittersweet smell—like exotic black tea—rising into the air. It was the night pluviophiles came to dance. If I think hard, I can still taste the ghost of the raindrops on my tongue and sense Beth’s radiating warmth beside me; its own ghost ” - trahison, chapter three

ix. if your wip was a movie, could you see it be done in the 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s, or 2010s? why that decade in particular?

so, fun fact, i hadn’t decided when to set trahison (see: the big question mark in my plotting notebook) but i have recently made up my mind and decided to set it in the seventies! if it was a film, then i could see it being made in seventies france! very a la the dreamers.

x. are you able to just make up a story on the spot, or do you need help (plot generators or other outside influences)?

sometimes i’ll take the help of prompts or media, but otherwise i just come up with things on my own!

i. what do the names of your main characters mean? did you pick them for the meaning or another reason?

i picked the trahison characters’ names based on two things: how much it related to the character’s backstory or personality, and how pleasing it sounded out loud. here are the meanings of their names:

marin — of the sea

ruby — deep red; precious stone; behold a son

elizabeth — god is my oath

nathaniel — gift from god

antoine — priceless one; beyond praise

isadora — gift of Isis

ii. what book are you currently reading?

I’m currently reading the time machine by h.g wells!

iii. last sentence written?

“ When the end of the world comes — I’ll film it ” — copycat, or the one where i predict the future. 

iv. who are some of your faceclaims?

i usually don’t use faceclaims, but if i had to choose:

marin van doren (trahison) — timor simakov

eloi hill (psychophantia) — maxence danet fauvel

cass parker (penny lane) — monica tomas

v. gimme some worldbuilding facts!!

alright, here’s one: in the world of psychophantia, not only is the magic system and your powers controlled by your morals, but so is your social ranking, your education, and any future you may have—to an extent. 

vi. do you outline? if so, do you have a specific method?

i’m a plotter and only really work well with a solid outline, however, my outlines range from a series of messy, incoherent bullet points to meticulous scene-by-scene planning based around the three act structure. this post is my go to for plotting assistance! 

vii. favourite author?

Like every tumblr user ever, i love donna tartt and maggie stiefvater, but i’m also a huge fan of f.scott fitzgerald, agatha christie and vera caspary!

viii. what is your oldest wip?

trahison! It went through many, many changes — from changes in genre to changes in character names, and there’s still a possibility that it could change even further. 

ix. what is your favourite wip?

every wip i reblog under my #others. tag! You all are so damn talented!

x. where do you get your inspiration from?

everywhere around me! from conversations i have with people, from films and books i consume, from the music on the radio — i like that anything and everything can inspire me to create.

i. in one sentence, explain your current wip!

a group of secretive students attempt to become immortal, only to uncover the worst parts of themselves — and each other — as they do. 

ii. was writing your main interest or did you have other interests?

although writing is my main interest (see: my social media bio on every platform ever), i also like to journal, sew, cook and make videos! my interests usually do have to do with the intention of creation. 

iii. what’s your favorite genre to write? to read?

I love writing horror and mysteries. those are my favourite genres, but i also love reading a good contemporary romance!

iv. what is one goal you have for your wip this year? how’s that goal going?

to finish the first draft! so far, not so bad, though i do wish i could write more, but unfortunately, time constraints plus school restrict me from doing so. 

v. how old is your wip? or when did you start writing your wip?

trahison is nearly three years old, but i only started writing the current version of it a year ago. 

vii. what scene made you cry or laugh or both?

these lines made me laugh out loud the first time i wrote them:

“ Up the stairs stumbled Miles, my slovenly genius roommate. He grinned at the giggles and winked at the exasperated stares. 

The gall of him! 

I wanted to be him. 

He managed to find his balance enough to reach our dorm. I immediately stepped back to let him in, and to make sure I was in no association with his uncomposed state. Nate gave a disapproving look at his back as he staggered in. 

I took another step back, raised a pointed eyebrow, and closed the door ” — trahison, chapter three

vii. how many ocs does your wip have? who’s your favourite?

my main wip, trahison, has six main characters. out of the main six, my favourite has to be nathaniel. he is very much the epitome of pure, and sometimes i wonder how he ended up in the middle of such a dark plot. 

vii. you have a brand new idea for a wip, what do you do? 

brainstorm, brainstorm, brainstorm. scribble down whatever the hell pops up in my brain, attempt to link it together by a thin string of yarn, cross my fingers and hope for the best.

ix. you are having your first book-signing, where are you?

i’m in a small bookstore, nestled in a corner near the storage room. almost no one knows about this town, so the line is small but chatty, fans exchanging theories and analysing certain paragraphs. the sight of them makes me feel warm inside. 

x. you have the ability to live in any book, publishing or not, what would it be?

would it be too cliche to say the harry potter universe? other than that, other worlds i would love to be a part of is the world in my novel penny lane, or in midst of a detective story.

i. how did you come up with your wip’s title? what does it mean in relation to the story?

okay, so i discovered the word ‘trahison’ after hearing my french teacher say it, and immediately knew i had to use it for something. ‘trahison’ means betrayal or treason in french, which is one of the main themes in the novel. 

ii. do you title your chapters? if so, what’s your favourite?

I don’t, but I would love to!!

iii. what’s a recent line you really like?

Not a very dramatic or noteworthy line, but here’s one from a poem i’m writing:

“ So the two of you get in the car, proceeding to have an argument with the radio ” — examples of easy solutions, or the one where the internet has no answers. 

iv. are there any writing-related quotes you really like?

“i think a lot of art is trying to make someone love you” — keaton henson

v. do you have an idea for a cover design for your story?

A black background with serif text, that’s it. It’s simple. It’s mysterious. It’s the type of vibe I want to exude. 

vi. what sort of au can you imagine your story being?

...dark academia au anyone?

just kidding. in all seriousness, though, i can see a royalty/political au for trahison, or a medieval fantasy au!

vii. which oc would be the most angry with you as the writer?

eloi. i really need to give that poor boy a break. 

viii. if you had to tell the story from a different pov, which character would you choose?

ruby! she’s the token enigma of trahison, so i think her point of view would be very interesting to see. 

ix. what would be your oc’s taste in music if they lived in our world?

OKAY let’s see:

marin — classic rock, so the who, queen, def leppard.etc

ruby — that one person who you’re pretty sure only listens to classical music, but is actually very attuned to modern day music. she would mostly listen to female singer-songwriters, so take lorde, marina, lana del rey, and other such artists. 

beth — take one look at her playlist, and you’ll see that ninety five percent of it is mitski, while the other five percent is bedroom pop. she would like very tender, calm, cry to in bed music. 

Antoine — same as marin, but add other modern day music artists with eclectic sounds, such as twenty one pilots, arctic monkeys, that sort of thing.

nathaniel — classical music, instrumentals, and film soundtracks make up his playlist. if it has sung words, he won’t listen to it. has little to no understanding of modern day music and is too scared to find out more about it.

isadora — 2000’s diva pop plays in the background of her life. rihanna is her go to whenever she gets to control the party. Don’t be surprised if ‘rich girl’ by gwen stefani starts playing in your head at the sight of her. 

x. what’s one personal goal you want to achieve by the end of the story?

finishing it with pride!

The Owl House looks super cool! I have a feeling it’ll have a Gravity Falls-esq atmosphere, what with the horror-comedy genre. I don’t expect it to be anything but gorgeous, and even the skeptic in me saying that every show I love will have a disappointing cop-out ending is quieter than usual. I’m super pumped for this series, and I just wanted a place to collect promotion material and analyze them. Currently I’m going by the description and a few images from Tumblr and the Disney Wiki page, but if you have any other official information or doodles from twitter, I’d love to hear about them!

“The series is a horror-comedy series that follows Luz, a self-assured teenage human girl who accidentally stumbles upon a portal to the Demon Realm. There she befriends a rebellious witch, Eda, and an adorably tiny warrior, King. Despite not having magical abilities, Luz pursues her dream of becoming a witch by serving as Eda's apprentice at the Owl House and ultimately finds a new family in an unlikely setting”

I want to know how to pronounce her name. I call her ‘Luz’ in my head, with a short ‘u’, but I wonder if it’ll be pronounced ‘looz’ which sounds...well, like a term used to describe a certain room in the house. It also sounds like ‘lose’, which is interesting as well.

I’d put her age at around fourteen or fifteen, certainly not lower than thirteen. But this is coming from someone who though Gideon Gleeful was in his thirties, so I’m probably not the best at age estimates.

‘Accidentally stumbles upon a portal’? I wonder if it’s a sort of rip in reality, a magical artifact, a magical portal opened accidentally by a spell, or a villain's doing? Like perhaps they were trying to gain entrance to the mortal realm? -Like another demon we know?-

(That aside, I wonder if we’ll get a little Bill cameo. Like I’m guessing well see a little triangle doodled on the corner of a book. A really tiny easter egg.)

Back to Luz; what about her family? Does she have parents? She goes on to (I’m assuming) live in the demon realm for a while, so I’m super curious about her mortal world family. Is she an orphan? Are her parents awful? Does she have any siblings? Friends? I worry for them and I worry for her.

Is Luz safe in the demon realm? Will she have to be wary about being a human surrounded by supernatural creatures?

How will she get to know Eda and King? Will they rescue her from some sort of threat? Will they be the first people she meets?

How old is King? What about his family? Was he training to be a warrior? How do he and Eda know each other? Was he an acquaintance of hers before she started rebelling?

I’m very interested in the magical system and this world in general; who rules the place? Who is Eda rebelling against? Societal convention or an authority figure?

What exactly is “The Owl House”? I’m taking a guess and saying that it’s either the name of a class in this world or is a name given to people who associate with Eda, given that she’s known as ‘The Owl Lady’ (more on that later).

I’m also intrigued by the fact that the description implies that having ingrained magical abilities is one thing, and being able to perform magic just by training is another. I’m wondering if she actually has no potential to do magic and trains to be able to from scratch/ learns how to use the staff, or if she actually does have some magical abilities and has to work to discover and hone them.

Luz’s character design is so cute!

She and Eda have the same gold eyes; I wonder if this has to do with magical abilities or is symbolism. OR *puts tinfoil hat on* Luz is actually Eda’s daughter, and she was sent to the mortal world- yeah, probably the former. In fact, there seems to be a sort of gold motif around these three; Luz and Eda’s eyes, the latter’s nails and necklace (or whatever that gold thing on her dress is), King’s collar, the sparkles all around them...food for thought.

I see the creepy looking building in the background with “The Owl Sh-” (I can only assume it says ‘shop’)  written on it; more on that later. I’m assuming this is where Eda lives/works. I suppose she runs a shop of sorts?

There’s a massive stained glass design of a red eye on the top of the building. Hmm.

Eda looks a little villainous in this image, so I’m wondering if she will be introduced or come off as sinister. King is also so darn cute.

Cool mom nonchalantly throws magical bug at son, unfazed by daughter’s bewilderment.

Luz seems to have a slightly different outfit here; the pink gradient on her shoes is gone (maybe that was a trick of the lighting) and so are the pink shapes on the bottom of her leggings. The strings of her shirt are gone, and her irises aren’t visible here, though that may be because of that expression. The irises return in later drawings.

So, front and center in the background; ‘The Owl Lady’ is at large with a comically heavy price on her head.

So, first of all, she freaking framed her ‘wanted’ poster. I’m guessing Eda is quite proud of this. I love her for that.

This photo also implies that she’s known King for a while, and he’s likely wanted as an accomplice.

I’m curious as to whether this reward was placed by a personal enemy or by a governing body or other authority figure.  

She’s known as the ‘Owl Lady’; she’s probably a bit of an enigma. That being said, the building on the first photo probably said ‘Owl Shop’ on it, so...Maybe whoever wanted to capture her could search the building that looks pretty darn suspicious? This points to the building being either abandoned or obscured heavily by magic. Or the fact that they know where she is but can’t actually capture her.

Has she failed to have been captured because of her power or because of her being in hiding?

The shop thing is so weird. I don’t even know what to make of it. I guess she owns or lives in this store, but maybe I’m taking the ‘living in the workspace’ thing straight from Gravity Falls.

It seems that they use a dollar sign to represent whatever currency they use.

On to the rest of the background; Eda has an accordian. I need answers. Somebody came in second place for something at some point and she felt the need to hang the medal on her wall. Eda, you better have a good explanation for the friking hand on your wall because otherwise I’m dubbing you ‘Hand Witch 2.0’.

She also has a foam finger and radio; does the demon realm just have similar technology to the mortal world or is it something that perhaps ‘fell through’, maybe through a portal like how Luz did? If so, how interested is she in these items to have kept and displayed them in her home? Was this a reason she was interested in Luz and agreed to teach her magic?

It’s a little hidden by Luz’s hand, but it looks as if there’s an eye with a slitted pupil as a decoration in the center of the couch. HMMM.

The lamp, I’m assuming, is lit by magic, but it would be pretty darn cool if the demon realm had electricity.  

Other notable items; an umbrella, what looks like a small photograph of sorts, or something else in a little frame, an askew corner of what looks like cardboard or paper thumb-tacked to the wall, a cow skull, the thing in a oval frame that King is obscuring, the sword and axe.

I suppose the satchel belongs to Luz; it looks brighter than everything else and has a little purple dinosaur sticker that matches her shirt. I guess this may be her school bag?

Why is King wearing a collar? Is it an identification thing from when he was working/training as a warrior?

I’m so curious about the recurring owls! The frame has an owl on it too. Is Eda known as ‘The Owl Lady’ just because of her staff?

I’m curious about that staff too; Eda holds it here but other official doodles show only Luz with it. I’m guessing that the staff helps her enhance/control her powers, or it’s just a sort of broom, and that she will eventually pass it on to Luz.

Eda reminds me of Pearl for some reason? Just the way she looks, and seems to carry and present herself, coupled with the fact that she’s rebellious and carries a long, stick-shaped weapon. I doubt her personality would match up, though. I think she’d be a bit more like Garnet in that she’ll be hard to impress and powerful, and a bit like Stan Pines in that she will be very sly and deceitful along with wanting to bond with and protect others. I love King already. I’m guessing he’ll be quite loyal to both Eda and Luz. I feel like he’s going to be a sort of younger brother type to Luz.

Please tell he that owl isn’t sentient. I’m hoping it falls more into ‘magic that works like technology’ than it does full on sentience like Aladdin’s magic carpet.

Confirmation that King has two eyes; when I first saw the first two photos, I was worried because his right (?) eye was closed.

They’re eating ice cream here, and again I’m wondering about how technology will work in this show. They had to get this ice cream from somewhere and had to keep it cool somewhere, so it looks like there’s a market for ice cream in the demon realm and Eda either has a freezer or keeps them cold with magic.

Or maybe I’m completely wrong about the premise and Luz is hopping between realities. I’m so worried for this child. Is she going to get home she’s probably been reported missing are her family/friends okay.

Eda is unimpressed by tiny demon trying to steal her ice cream. Threatens to light him on fire. I wonder what that little guy is doing there. Perhaps those little creatures are the equivalent of mice.

The fact that King is eating ice cream from a cone suggests that they got it in the demon realm. You can get ice cream in a cone prepackaged (like with those drumsticks ice cream) but it’s more common to get it at an actual ice cream store.

Or maybe I’m just over analyzing a couple of doodles for an animated kids show that’s not going to air for almost a year from now. I don’t know what I’m doing. I wrote five pages. Twelve if you include all the photos.

Some plot predictions;

I imagine Luz will be adamant about wanting to learn magic, and Eda will be skeptical about teaching her. I’m thinking they’ll have a bit of tension going into it.

I don’t know where the exact tweet is, but Alex Hirsch described it as ‘making the censors want to quit’. Gravity Falls definitely pushed the boundaries (hard) for the creep factor, but I’ve got a feeling this show will do much worse. I’m looking forward to seeing a deeply unsettling world and some very dark story elements.

I’m sure that all of them will get to be badass together at some point and I look forward to that day.
