(okay i swear i'll stop after this but im literally shouting about this to everyone IRL too so you might as well hear it--
this is the first conference i have presented at in like...the 5ish? years I've been presenting at conferences and speaking at them and holding workshops at them that i have not left completely depleted of energy.
because i was given space before i had to present for myself, i was able to hang around after. i had a lemonade and spoke with one of the other presenters who has overlapping research interests (they were a fucking delight)! i was able to say hello to one of my colleagues! i was able to meet a couple new people at the research institute that was hosting the event.
and all of this is far more beneficial for me and for research and for myself as a practitioner than the stupid bullshit small-talk before and during conference presentations, or the energy it takes for me to be around other people when im about to have a room staring at me for a prolonged period of time.
i was able to go to a conference and not feel exhausted. i can still form sentences, and im heading into work now where a lot of my job is, in fact, TALKING to people and i am not questioning my coherency at this point.
i just had lunch, took a 45 minute break for myself and we're good to fucking go and all it took was fucking hard copy materials and a separate room.
thats literally it.
i implore, every single one of you reading this right now to ask yourself how your place of work/university is making spaces accessible. how are your meetings conducted? how are company retreats conducted? how does your university host events? ASK YOURSELF. and question literally everything.
