Next stop on our first trip to Japan was Kyoto. We took the Shinkansen 🚅 to Kyoto from Shizuoka, the kinda failed stop...lol We stayed at Hotel Okura in Kyoto @hotelokurakyoto . Which was an extremely nice hotel and great location in general. Definitely worth the stay if you're going to Kyoto. The hotel happened to be right across the street from the Kyoto Shinkyogoku Shopping Street @shinkShinkyogok. So we started checking it out and found many shrines and temples that had been moved to that location. Especially the Nishiki-Tenmangu Shrine. Where I bought some of the charms shown in the photos. For family members and friends when I got home. This was only the first stop and first day of our time there. And I have many photos of the Imperial Palace and temples and shrines we visited throughout Kyoto. I will start posting those soonish. #kinda_geeky #kindageeky #japan #birthdayvacation #hotelokurakyoto #shinkyogokushoppingstreet #nishikitenmangushrine #kyoto (at Shinkyogoku Shopping Street Union) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpO90bNLkal/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Japan S2, Day 5!
(Editor’s note: Please note that this was originally written back in November 2019, right after the actual trip. Some details have been updated, but the overall content remains the same.)
——
Tumblr media
For our next Kyoto destination, we visit Kiyomizu-dera Temple!
Tumblr media
The back of the main gate. :)
Tumblr media
This is the cleanest shot I could get; any cleaner and I would have to crop one of the statues on either side. >_>
Tumblr media
From a different angle.
Tumblr media
A nearby bell!
Tumblr media
Three-story Pagoda :) Thank god they have lightning rods, because the weather turned sour a few minutes later.
Tumblr media
Before that happened though, I went through the Zuigu Hall! Photography isn’t allowed, but I sneaked one photo of the inside anyway for you guys (▀̿Ĺ̯▀̿ ̿)
Tumblr media
Get it? :))
Seriously, it’s pitch black inside. That’s just a 5-second rendition in MS Paint, but that is in fact everything you will (or won’t?) see once you’re down there. Keep holding on to the Buddhist beads (like the instructions say) and you’ll eventually get through.
After about 5 minutes of walking, you’ll see a faint light above the Zuigu Stone. Again, I didn’t photograph it, so please just google what it looks like :v
Tumblr media
Finally back outside!
Tumblr media
You can see Kyoto Tower from a distance!
Tumblr media
Aaaaand it finally started raining.
Tumblr media
Quite heavily, too.
Tumblr media
Once the rain slowed down (it hadn’t stopped yet!), I braved it and pushed forward to the central (rear?) section of the temple. There’s an entrance fee, though.
Once inside, you’ll find these stairs going to the love stone!
Tumblr media
The love stone!
Tumblr media
The other love stone. You’re supposed to, uhhh…
Tumblr media
Just read the instructions okay? :)) I didn’t try it. Not interested. XD
Tumblr media
Zoomed in for your convenience :P
Tumblr media
Moving forward, here’s the pagoda dedicated to safe childbirths. :) I was stuck in the rain. ;^;
Tumblr media
When the rain finally stopped, I prcoeeded to Otowa waterfall! I only googled just now what it’s called. ^_^; You can drink the water from it! I did. :P
Tumblr media
More kids trying to catch water to drink.
Tumblr media
I’m including this random onee-san for the lulz. ^o^
Tumblr media
And we’re done with Kiyomizu-dera! I made my way through Sannenzaka for my next destination.
Tumblr media
I got hungry though (skipped breakfast - again!) so I ate some delicious shumai!
Tumblr media
More pictures of Sannenzaka.
(Editor’s note: Man I’d love to photograph this again once ‘rona is over. ...But then there’d be more people again... ugh)
Tumblr media
I think this is already Ninenzaka?
Tumblr media
I passed by this flight of stairs. I didn’t climb them though.
Tumblr media
I was losing interest in photography at this point because of the shitty weather (I had to hide my camera, you see). I’m not sure if this is still Sannenzaka or Nene no Michi. :(
Tumblr media
“Life is living you right now.”
What...?
Tumblr media
I brought my camera out again - because we’re almost at Maruyama Park!
(This is unfortunately not the same Maruyama in Aya’s name)
Tumblr media
Aa, ii ne ii ne!
Tumblr media
We’re back to photographing, babeh!
Tumblr media
Maruyama Park!
Tumblr media
A zoomed in version of the sign.
Tumblr media
And this is to zoom... even further... beyond...
Tumblr media
The bridge at the entrance of the park!
(Editor’s note: Photo blog entry)
Tumblr media
Geisha? Tourist? I can’t remember D:
Tumblr media
Failed attempt at artistry, LOL
Tumblr media
Monument inside the park.
Tumblr media
The entrance to Chion-in! I didn’t go inside anymore though.
Tumblr media
And that was Higashiyama! I snapped this photo on my way to the train station.
Tumblr media
Pokemon Center Kyoto! Hello Kawaramachi!
… I didn’t buy anything though. :))
Tumblr media
The entrance to Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine, inside the Kawaramachi shopping district. Again, I didn’t go inside anymore.
Tumblr media
ANIMATE KYOTO! MY PEOPLE!
At this point I just went around looking for otaku goods, and thus marks the end of my journey around Kyoto. :) I’m not yet done with my adventures in Japan though!
(Editor’s note: Technically there was one more Kyoto destination.. but it’s not a place people would normally associate with “Kyoto”)
Tumblr media
This giant-ass crab was moving @_@
Tumblr media
SEE? THE CLAWS HAVE CHANGED POSITION D:
Tumblr media
I passed by a BIG BOSS Music shop, and knowing them, I knew they’d have one of these :))
The things I’d do for that Sayo guitar.
Tumblr media
I’m back at the same river from the night before! Without wanting to pee this time. :P
Tumblr media
I actually went back a bit to have some Gyuudon at Matsuya. That day I also learned how to use an ordering machine at most shops. ^_^  Itadakimasu!
Day 5 in Japan S2, complete! ^_^
<< Day 4 . . . Side Quest: Oregairu Kyoto Field Trip >>

I❤️🇯🇵 repost @visitjapanjp ・・・ Happy New Year from everyone here at JNTO! 2020 is going to be an incredible year for Japan, and we're excited to share it with everyone! Do you have plans to visit the Land of the Rising Sun this year? If so, we want to hear them! Here are some essential ways to celebrate New Year's Day in Japan! 1) Hatsumode: join locals for the "first shrine visit of the year." You will see people getting in line at shrines before midnight to pay their respects to the gods. If you are lucky, the shrine might even serve some warm amazake (an non alcoholic rice drink) or sake! 2) Omikuji: find out your fortune for the next year! These little paper fortunes (like the one in the picture) are usually in Japanese, but Sensoji Temple in Tokyo, Naritasan Shinshoji Temple in Chiba Prefecture, Nishiki Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto, and Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kamakura are known for providing English versions. 3) Osechi: this Japanese cuisine contains assorted traditional dishes, and is served in a box similar to bento. Each ingredient holds a particular meaning and symbolizes good fortune for the year ahead! 4) See the sunrise: active types might want to hike up to one of Japan's many mountain shrines to see the first sunrise of the year. Just be sure to bundle up to keep warm! Watching Mt. Fuji appear in the sunrise is another popular option. Incredible photo courtesy of @ko_ion9117.
