But, sadly, it is. 🪚 'My Heart is a Chainsaw' pays homage to the slasher movie, climaxing at an all-American fourth of July extravaganza. On one hand it relies heavily on pop-culture referencing and genre tropes. On the other, it smashes stereotypes; it is horrifically grounded in the realistic experience of an innocent American girl. Her tale is made only more terrifying by the current state of our shared reality. 🪚 This street art provided the backdrop to the final series of photos I took whilst living stateside (bar a few covert snaps of a bizarre, Blade Runner-esque airport experience). I left during the very early days of the pandemic. Having lived a little of the American life, I feel stronger emotional investment in the current political climate of the country than I did before. I feel at once entitled to outrage and utterly powerless. I feel scared for the friends that I made, the people I spoke to, swapped a smile with, stood beside in line... Mark has once again approached an impressive range of authors but we've reserved space for four new stories from the online submissions. This is a prestigious anthology and will be published worldwide in hardcover and paperback. The first book in the series, After Sundown, was nominated for both Shirley Jackson and British Fantasy awards, so we’re looking forward to finding more unthemed horror stories for this fifth collection. Out of the 3 books I would have to say that Talia is my favorite so far. Talia is introduced in Billy Silver. I was so happy when he came out with a book all about her. I found her quite intriguing in Billy Silver. She is a bad ass bitch!!

The Lost Village by Camilla Sten

Camilla Sten's The Lost Village gave all the creepy abandoned village vibes I was hoping for. Our main character is a filmmaker looking to create a documentary about an abandoned village that her grandmother grew up in. Her grandmother would tell her stories about the village and showed her letters from her family after she moved away. Inexplicably, overnight all the people in the village went missing except for a baby that was found alone. This filmmaker leads a team to try and explore the village and find any missing information.

The book was a great read and there were not very many moments where the story seemed to drag. I enjoyed the atmosphere that Sten created and felt as though I could see what she intended. While the atmosphere and main story line were amazing, I did feel as though there were some aspects that weren't for me. The main character was quite abrasive in her thoughts about other people but you could tell that this was a character that over thought every little interaction with another person. As someone with anxiety, it's understandable but not the most fun to read. The ending did leave me wishing there was a bit more explanation and maybe a bit of a twist that was unexpected. I have read other reviews where they loved the twists in this story but to me they seemed quite obvious with the evidence from the book and the hints were a bit heavy handed.

The Lost Village was a fun ride that is worth the time to read and had a few creepy moments in the book that are worthy of a read alone. Rating out of 5 stars, I would give this book a 3.
