This is actually a really interesting study that posits some important concepts about animal behavior but I can’t get over the unintentionally comedic header image

Just a few shots from my return to the Galápagos… a place that only gets more incredible the more time you spend there.

Preening is a common mating and bonding ritual between mated birds. It serves as a way to erode their normal spatial instincts to attack or avoid another animal in close range

Animal of the Day!
Vampire Ground-finch (Geospiza septentrionalis)
Tumblr media
Conservation Status- Vulnerable
Habitat- Northern Galapagos Islands
Size (Weight/Length)- 20 g; 12 cm
Diet- Blood; Insects; Seeds
Cool Facts- The sharp-beaked vampire ground-finch is something straight out of a horror movie. During the majority of the year, these little birds will only eat seeds and insects. However, when food and water are scarce on their island home, vampire ground-finch begin to target the local seabirds. Targeting mostly nesting nazca boobies, the vampire ground-finch pierces the boobies’ skin and drink the flood that flows from the wound. While the boobies can grow irritated with the finches, they don’t aren’t aggressive towards the finch.
Rating- 12/10 (Darwin’s wet dream.)
Animtober- Flame (Lives on an active volcano.)

Galapagos is a destination worth visiting once in a lifetime, ebbed in the rich ethos of marine biodiversity. Galapagos is an excellent example of a place with much marine life. It is also a unique place for nautical life fans and people who like to travel to meet up.
The archipelago is made up of 18 islands and 107 islets. Only 4 are inhabited: San Cristobal, Santa Cruz, Floreana, and Isabela. The main islands on the itinerary are:
Baltra: A barren and arid land, Baltra comprises annual grasses and vines. Its vegetation is limited to saltbushes, cacti, and palo santo trees.
Bartolome is a coastal haven where many different animals live, such as sea lions, stingrays, spotted eagle rays, white-tipped sharks, and black-tipped sharks. Underneath, you have snorkeling and hiking opportunities that provide extraordinary sights you can’t afford to miss.
Chinese Hat: The island’s name comes from its shape, which is like a Chinese hat. The island is known for its white coral sand beaches, where you can glimpse sea lions and Sally Lightfoot crabs.
Espanola: Find blue-footed and Nazca boobies, doves, albatrosses, sea lions, and more. Its dry climate means it is home to reptiles. You can find some excellent rara avis here.

Ferdinara: Pink flamingos cover the landscape here. The island has white, sandy beaches that give the shores a beautiful cover.
Genovesa: A nest to innumerable species, Genovesa is rich in its bird population. Unaltered by man, it remains an abode for bird species, quietly preserving and silently providing.
Seymor Norte: Pass by Seymor Norte to catch a glimpse of blue-footed boobies and frigate birds. These rare birds are safe in the abundant wildlife trees in Seymor Norte. Marine iguanas and sea lions also contribute to the coastal biodiversity here.
Rabida: Sharks and manta rays can be commonly found here. Coves and cliffs comprise the terrain here, rendering some excellent views.
San Cristobal: Exuberant vegetation and coastal terrain can be seen herein. Adorned with freshwater lakes, it is home to some extravagant species.
