Today is National Sewing Machine Day! This photograph shows a Singer sewing machine salesman demonstrating how the machine works. The Singer treadle sewing machine had a cast iron base and treadle. The machine also folded down into a cabinet.

Apparently it’s national Sewing Machine Day! 🪡 I’m not normally one for silly holidays but I legitimately could not do my job without a sewing machine! It’s like a cell phone or a car - I take for granted that it’s always there and then realize how much I rely on it when it’s not! . This @berninausa machine was given to me by my mom as a college graduation present and I use it multiple times per week. Its currently in the shop for a tune up and though I have a trusty backup (thank you to everyone who helped me find one so fast!), I’m looking forward to having it back. It’s reliable and a workhorse and I really should give it a name! . NATIONAL SEWING MACHINE DAY
JUNE 13TH, IS NATIONAL SEWING MACHINE DAY. THIS NATIONAL HOLIDAY IS ALWAYS HELD ON THE 13TH OF JUNE AND HONORS THE INVENTION AND CONVENIENCE OF THE SEWING MACHINE. IT SAVES COUNTLESS HOURS THAT WOULD BE SPENT HAND-STITCHING CLOTHING, BEDDING AND WHAT NOT. THOMAS SAINT WAS AN ENGLISH INVENTOR THAT FIRST APPLIED FOR THE PATENT FOR THE SEWING MACHINE IN 1790. IN 1874, ANOTHER ENGLISHMAN WILLIAM NEWTON WILSON FOUND THOMAS SAINT'S PATENT DRAWINGS, MADE SOME MINOR CHANGES AND THEN BUILT A WORKING MODEL. THE INVENTION OF THE SEWING MACHINE LED TO A BOOM IN THE TEXTILE INDUSTRY. CLOTHING AND OTHER CLOTH ITEMS COULD BE PRODUCED ON A MASS SCALE INSTEAD OF BEING MADE BY HAND BY TAILORS, HOUSEWIVES AND SEAMSTRESSES. THIS GREATLY REDUCED THE TIME IT TOOK TO PRODUCE CLOTHING AND THUS DROPPED PRICES DRAMATICALLY. CELEBRATE BY LEARNING MORE ABOUT SEWING AND SEWING MACHINES. ON NATIONAL SEWING MACHINE DAY, EVERYTHING IS COOL.
