Io moth (Automeris io), Fishers Island, NY. The larvae are from August 2014. The adult is from  July 2015.  Although pretty, the caterpillars of the io moth are dangerous to touch, even young caterpillars such as these guys (mature caterpillars become green). The large spines that protrude from their back can cause a stinging sensation t the fingers, similar to stinging nettle. The adults, however, are harmless.  Caterpillars move and eat together when young, then disperse later in the summer. Usually two generations in the Mid-Atlantic. Feeds on many different trees, shrubs, legumes, and grasses (this one was feeding on black locust).

A very young monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) caterpillar. Fishers Island, NY. August 2015. In addition, we have some Oleander aphids (Aphis nerii) feeding on the young shoots.   Many insects that feed on milkweed specialize on storing the plant’s toxic chemicals in their own bodies. The toxins in milkweeds, called cardiac glycosides, can arrest the heart in vertebrates, and at best, leave a terrible taste in a predator’s mouth. For insect predators, those that eat milkweed insects can end up underdeveloped or deformed. Insects that contain these toxins bear contrasting colors: yellow and black, red and black, or orange and black. Monarch butterfly caterpillars bear the typical yellow and black stripes, whereas the Oleander aphids are orange with black legs and tubercules.
