oh my god where do I start. Final Fantasy XIV (FFXIV) is an MMORPG that's been going on 2013, or 2010 if you count the trainwreck that the current FFXIV replaced (the 2010 version's music was composed mainly by Uematsu, 2013 onwards is mostly Soken). Thus its OST is FUCKING HUGE and spans a whole lot of genres. If you like any kind of music at all you can probably find at least one track that speaks to you in this game. FFXIV has a category of incredibly difficult fights called Ultimate, comprised of multiple short phases that each have their own music. Because of the nature of how Ultimates are structured, they're the only fights in FFXIV where the music can actually be timed to the mechanics. If you're not afraid of story spoilers, look up any ultimate's BGM and you can see how cool this effect is. (I can't listen to Under the Weight without also hearing the sound of every mechanic and tankbuster.) (My personal favorite ultimate, music-wise, is The Epic of Alexander. Back when I was progging the fight I used to fall asleep listening to the BGM.) To The Edge is so so special to everyone who loves FFXIV. It's the theme of a boss in Shadowbringers; I can't give details without also giving major spoilers, but I will say that the story and this song deal with the themes of death and loss. If you look up the lyrics, which aren't too spoilery without context, you'll get what I mean. What makes this extra emotional is that FFXIV's main composer, Soken, was in the hospital fighting cancer when he composed this song. (To be clear: he kept working because it provided him with a desperately needed sense of normalcy, not because he needed to.) No one on the dev team knew aside from Yoshi P, FFXIV's producer + director as well as Soken's personal friend; the rest of the team found out the same time the fans did, months after the fact when Soken was in full remission, at the 2021 FFXIV Fan Festival (FanFest). To The Edge was already widely beloved prior to this because it's an incredible banger tied to an incredible story moment, but knowing what was going on behind the scenes during its composition, in addition to the story and song's own themes surrounding death, turns it into a piece that no one can listen to without getting wildly emotional about it. With Hearts Aligned is also so so so special to me because it's the song that plays in the 'victory lap' second phase against the final boss that caps off a nine year long story arc. It features a leitmotif from The Maker's Ruin, a song from 2013, that represents the player and is often used when we overcome seemingly insurmountable odds. There are no words that can describe the sheer fucking emotion of fighting the final boss of a nine year long story arc while listening to the leitmotif that represents YOU, a leitmotif that you first heard however many weeks or months or years ago when you first started playing this game. The ultimate triumph, and the ultimate song of hope. Also if you like leitmotifs, FFXIV has /so many leitmotifs/. I would put the entire game's soundtrack if I could but there's a LOT. The album I listed is for the "postgame" of Shadowbringers. Of particular note is the song "To The Edge" which was written while the composer, Masayoshi Soken, was battling with cancer.

yoko shimomura, the GODDESS, the LEGEND, her composing skills never fail to amaze! kh music is so so goodddddd
I’m not good with propagandizing but the OST for this series is so good. For KH3, I love so much of the soundtrack. The Disney worlds have some great tracks, but the endgame and dlc has almost nothing but bangers.

Akhil Akkineni's much-anticipated spy thriller film Agent is making headlines with back-to-back updates. After successfully releasing the teaser and two singles from the film, the makers have now unveiled the lyrical video of the third single titled 'Rama Krishna' on social media.
Sharing the video link with the fans and audiences, the makers of Agent, AK Entertainments took to Twitter and wrote- 'Hello! BOYS. Staring vibing to THE BOYS ANTHEM.'
Billed as a Breakup anthem for boys, Rama Krishna is penned by the academy award winner Chandra Bose while the Tamil musical duo Adhithya Venkatapathy and R. Jeeva who was widely known as Hip Hop Tamizha composed the tunes for it.
The film's lead Akhil looked exceptionally handsome in a traditional appeal wearing an orange Kurta and jeans with rudraksha mala around his neck and an orange headband. In the lyrical video, we can also see glimpses of Akhil dancing his heart out to this peppy beat which was crooned by the singing sensation Ram Miriyala.
For the unversed, Agent is an upcoming film directed by the ace filmmaker Surender Reddy. The spy action thriller stars Akhil Akkineni in the lead role while newbie Sakshi Vaidya is making her debut.

WHERE IS THE LOVE

It felt like it was just yesterday when you were a new transfer student entering a high school in Toronto.
You were forced to relocate to another country because your dad was offered a promotion at work. You were so happy when he conveyed the news even though you were a little sad that you had to move to another country.
First day of school was tough as nobody wanted to get to know the new kid. You were about to give up when a group of guys asked whether they could sit with you during lunch.
Because you were lonely and desperate for friends you said yes. Those guys were Shawn,Brian and Connor. Soon the four of you became inseparable, you see the thing is for other people at the school they were the three weirdos and now you were their newest member.
The three of you were there from the beginning of Shawn's music career. You were there when his vine blew up and you were all so proud when stitches went trending.
Fast forward to now, you are currently on a summer break from university and what better way to spend your break than joining your best friend’s world tour.
Today you were off to the land of the rising sun aka Japan. As soon as you reach your seat, all you want you to do is take a nap. But unfortunately that was just impossible as you were sitting in next to Brian and Connor.
“Guys please let me sleep.” You whinnied
“Nope, Y/N you're so busy with boring University assignments and now we can finally catch up with each other .” Brian said
“Hey Y/N, what’s stopping you two?” Connor asked
“What do you mean?” You said in lazy tone and eyes still closed
“Let me rephrase it for you my dear, do you or do you not still have feelings for Shawn?” Connor said cheekily
You opened your eyes immediately and said, “Connor wtf?” You said while elbowing him
“Owww, but seriously that sounds like a yes to me, right Brian?” Connor said
“Uhm without a doubt.” Brian nod his head
“Look Y/N, all I’m saying is It will be a dream come true if you and Shawn finally decide to take your friendship to the next level.” Connor said
“What are you trying to say Con, stop giving me riddles.” You whined
“All I’m saying is I know our Shawnie like you too and I have a plan to make him confess his feelings to you.” Connor said
“Whatever brilliant plan you think you have, I don’t want to know because whatever feelings I have towards him will just ruin our friendship.” You replied
“Cmon Y/N, please!” He said while giving you his puppy eyes
“I just don’t want to ruin our friendship, Con.” you said
“I pinky promise, your friendship won’t be ruined.” He said
“Fine, tell me your so-called amazing plan” you replied
“Brian, will you do the honours of explaining the plan to this amazing lady here.” Connor said
“ it would be my pleasure.” He said while giggling
The next few hours flew by and soon you were arriving at theHaneda Airport. Upon arriving the four of you and all the crew rushed to the hotel.
————The next morning———————————-
“Good morning Y/N and Con.” Shawn said in a clearly still sleepy face
Shawn was sleepy but not blind as he saw his 2 best friends standing rather close to each other. Connor’s hand was wrapped around your waist and his face was buried in your neck.
“Oh hey Shawn, didn’t see you there.” You said and immediately you turned your attention back to Connor and he whispered to your ear,”pretend I said something funny and you loved it.” In response you just giggled and Completely ignored Shawn.
Shawn felt annoyed and decided to go and find Brian. After spotting Brian, Shawn decided to approach his table.

Brian, resting his head in one of his hands while the other aggressively stabbed the watermelon in his bowl with a fork.
“Dude, don’t blame the watermelon when you have a jetlag!” Brian said
"I am not jetlag" Shawn mumbled through gritted teeth and annoyed expression, lifting his eyes to look at you again, gripping the fork tighter when he saw who you were with.
Brian followed his friend's eyes, and he was crossing his fingers and hoping his plan worked when his eyes landed on you. But for now he just sighed and put his hand on Shawn’s shoulder, to somehow give him support over the image of his two best friends acting all flirty toward one another.
You made your way through the hotel restaurant to find Brian’s table while holding Connor’s hand. This was part of the whole plan, you and Connor had to act all flirty with each other during breakfast.
Hey guys" You playfully greeted, reaching the table, a big smile on your face as you sat across from them.
Before Connor could sit down next yo you, he got a phone call from Andrew saying that he needs to finish editing the video now so he excused himself and went back to his room.
"Hi Y/n" Brian happily replied, lightly nudging Shawn’s elbow when he didn't say anything.
Your smile instantly replaced by a frown, when you noticed Shawn was just focused on his watermelon , avoiding your gaze. By now you wonder, whether the plan actually worked because the last thing you want is to ruin your friendship.
"So how did you guys sleep?" You awkwardly asked, focusing your curious eyes on Brian, waiting for him to tell you what was going on with Shawn.
“Uh ... not much but managed to get 6 hours" Brian said. "So, when did you get all lovey dovey with Connor?" He asked to take the attention away from Shawn, but he mentally he knew that's probably the last thing Shawn wants to hear right now.
"Oh last night Connor confessed his feelings and I said I felt the same" You smiled back again, meanwhile Shawn just choked at his glass of milk.
By now Shawn was coughing and you quickly asked, “ Shawn you okay, here have my water.”
“I’m good Y/N, thanks.” Shawn replied but still avoiding your meet your eye
“He confessed his feelings and now you guys are showing all the PDA" He teased in a mocking tone making you frown for the second time, because it wasn't a sarcastic mocking tone, it was a mean mocking tone.
"I mean he is proud to say that He has feelings for me and now he just wants other people to know about our love too so I will say it’s a sweet gesture he likes and I really enjoy it too" You defended yourself, and Shawn just chuckled.
"I'm pretty sure that's just a rebound,I mean we're talking about Connor, He makes everyone think he has moved on from his ex and Y/n, I'm sure he just wants to have a tour fling to show his ex." Shawn proudly said
"So you're saying I'm just some fling for him?" You asked, ignoring the way your heart ached from Shawn who was thinking so low of your other best friend.
"What I'm saying is the guy still constantly talks about his ex , so my advice is you shouldn't be that excited about your new relationship status because he'll just end up going back to his ex.” He stated while obviously still clouded by jealousy.
"Seriously why can’t you be happy that I end up with Connor, Mendes" You painfully said, before getting up from the table and leaving your bowl of cereal behind and you went back to your room.
Jealousy could trigger many things and you certainly didn’t expect Shawn would say that about Connor.
“Mendes, when was the last time she called you that?” Brian said
Mendes, you only call him that whenever you are upset with him. And now he realised that he too was blinded by the jealousy that he didn’t monitor all the words coming out of his mouth.
“ You know what I still can’t believe, I am still surprised that a guy like you could write so many songs but can never truly say anything to the person who inspired all the songs.” Brian shook his head in disapproval and left Shawn all alone at the hotel restaurant.
………………��….Later at rehearsal…………………..
Part B of the plan was for you and Connor to arrive together at the rehearsal but also you need to arrive a little late to build some type of tension, at least this theory was stated by Brian.
“Okay everyone let’s take 5, before we start.” Shawn said to the band, “Brian where‘s Y/N?” He asked
“I don’t know probably, with Connor.” Brian replied
After rehearsing for 2 songs you finally arrived at the venue with Connor.
Usually during all rehearsals or concerts you will give your full attention to Shawn and after every song you would give him a thumbs up and clap for him.
Today however it was different as he looked across the stage he saw you sitting in Connor’s lap and giggling at his cheesy jokes.
Shawn felt heartbroken when he saw you, his girl, well not exactly, his girl that isn't his but is his ... the girl he loved forever... anyway, when he saw you laugh with someone that wasn't him his heart instantly dropped.
Especially when that someone was Connor Brashier, I mean he knew that Connor was aware of his feelings toward you and he didn’t expect this type of betrayal from Connor of all people.
———- The day of the concert——————————
Today was the big day, usually Shawn felt excited because he was about to meet all his fans but today he couldn’t concentrate, he kept thinking whether things could turn out differently if he confessed his feelings sooner. Would you feel the same? One thing for sure is he would be on cloud nine if you felt the same way he did.
“Shawn, you ready?” Andrew asked
“Yeah, yeah sure.” He said clearly distracted
“Hey.” You said entering the dressing room
“Y/N, what are you doing here?” Shawn asked
“Am I not allowed to wish my best friend a goodluck?” You asked.
“Whatever Y/N just go and be with Connor.” He said
“Look Shawn I think there’s something you should know.”
“Look Y/N, I need to focus on rehearsing my lyrics so please don’t distract me.”
“Shawn I’m sorry if I ever was a distraction, I’ll be outside if you need me.” You said trying to hold back your tears
“Y/N wait! I’m sorry I didn’t mean that it’s just you’re a distraction because dammit I am in love with you and I understand that you’re with Connor now and I just think you should know how I feel about you .” He said
“Shawn I’m not with Connor, I mean the whole thing was them trying to prove to me that I wasn’t the only one who felt that way towards you… the truth is I have loved you since high school if I’m being honest.” You confessed
The next few minutes was a blur as Shawn got up from his seat to kiss you…. what you didn’t know was that the dressing room door was open and Connor and Brian were standing there.
Seeing that Brian grabbed the door handle and closed the door.
Standing at the side stage, Connor happily said, “we did it bro.”
“Damn right we did.” Brian sighed happily and they fist bumped each other.

Nilo Blues Pays Homage to Cult Anime Film Akira in “Akira Harakiri” [Premiere + Q&A]

The city of Toronto never ceases to amaze us. What can arguably be considered the epicenter for a new wave of hip-hop, Toronto has become notorious for generating underground sensation after sensation. Through their cultivation of hypnotic and innovative soundscapes, to their impeccable flows and lyricism, Toronto has solidified an extensive roster of industry frontrunners, and Nilo Blues is proving to be the newest addition to the team.
Despite being a self-proclaimed poster child for Generation Z, the 21-year-old is anything but ordinary. Growing up in the Toronto art scene, Blues encompasses what it means to be a multi-hyphenate creative, utilizing his talents as a singer, rapper, dancer, and producer to tell stories that grapple with his Asian identity within the context of western society.
His debut single, “No Risk Involved,” is an intrepid statement on Asian cultural identity and showcases how Blues’ struggle to live and create beyond rigid stereotypes has ultimately fueled him to pave his own way, in music and life. His nuanced and complex approach to the modern trap soundscape mirrors that of his own evolution and understanding of his own personal identity. Woven within his uncompromisingly honest storytelling and conviction lies the infectious hooks, melodic arrangements, and unsparing production of a true, multi-hyphenate artist. And despite “No Risk Involved” being the official introduction to his discography, we’re here to tell you that it’s just the tip of the iceberg for Blues.
As we patiently await his debut EP, set to release this summer, Blues gives us a peek at what’s to come with his most recent drop, “Akira Harakiri.” Explosive and audacious, this track has the power to cause havoc to the silencers of a corrupted system. Compiled within roaring trap-laden beats and terse hip-hop rhythms, Blues’ adroit vocals and dynamic fluidity convey a sense of fervor, all while challenging the status quo of Asian representation within American culture.
“Akira Harakiri” pays homage to the anime that Blues grew up with, most notably the raw tenacity of Akira and the thriving energy of Dragonball Z, which influenced its sonic foundation and cinematic execution. In an effort to gain a more comprehensive understanding of his artistry, we spoke with Blues about his position in the current Toronto-trap soundscape and what motivates him to create breakout tracks like “No Risk Involved” and “Akira Harakiri.”
Ones To Watch: It seems like dancing used to be a significant part of your life before music. What sparked your transition?
Nilo Blues: Growing up I was surrounded by music, whether it be at home or in the dance studio. I always had this natural appreciation for music grow in me because of all the different sounds I was surrounded by. I remember having 10-hour dance rehearsal days and then coming home to record photo booth videos of me and my best friend spitting melodies and lyrics over beats we found. I started producing at 16 when I discovered the iMaschine app for iPhone. I would spend hours trying to cook up beats until one day I decided to learn Ableton Live. My mentor cracked it on my laptop and started showing me the ropes, instantly I was hooked. My musical journey honestly started out from me just wanting to make music I could dance to. I owe a lot of myself to dance. 100%.
Has being a dancer influenced your creative process at all?
Dance has influenced me creatively in many different aspects of the process. Growing up as a dancer, you immediately instill a high level of discipline and work ethic as a young child. We were training like athletes and expressing like actors. It shaped the way I hear music (especially my own), it developed my approach on execution and staying on my P’s and Q’s, and it allows me to perform and add a visual component to the sonics. I grew up admiring Michael Jackson, James Brown, JT, Usher and now Bruno Mars. They all hold all aspects of their art to such a high standard. I’m trying to set that exact same standard and quality, through my own vernacular.
Growing up in what can be considered as the epicenter of Canadian hip-hop, do you think Toronto, and the artists that have put it on the map, have influenced your sound at all?
I started learning how to make music right when the 2015-2016 Toronto rap boom happened, so definitely. I feel like Toronto artists collectively do such an amazing job at emulating the vibe of Toronto. At a time where Toronto was only synonymous with Drake (the GOAT), The Weeknd, and PND, Toronto artists really stepped up to the plate and let the world hear the type of shit we’re on. It's super inspiring, and I just want to keep pushing the envelope. I’m trying to land where no one has before, and make my mark in everything I set my mind to. I’m hungry and I want to get great shit done. I thank Toronto and the lively music scene in the city for sparking that.
Your first single “No Risk Involved” highlights the misrepresentation of Asian identity in mainstream culture. Why was it so important for you to create your own narrative and debunk westernized versions of Asian culture and identity?
My family was the main inspiration for wanting to evoke that conversation. Western media loves to exploit the great ideas from different cultures without ever giving credit to the cultures that cultivated them to begin with. They perpetuate false narratives and generalize us in order to keep control. I’ve seen what my family has gone through in order to even be here. My mom is Filipino, and my dad is Viet-Chin, so I’ve had my fair share of perspectives at a young age. One thing I can guarantee is that Asians aren’t as one-dimensional as the media portrays us to be. It’s about genuinely telling our stories, and being able to control the narrative in the world we share with the culture.
How was it filming the “No Risk Involved” video? Did you have a vision for how you wanted it to look?
It was amazing. I definitely felt back in my element while performing on-screen. The positive energy and hard work by everyone on set was the difference-maker. I feel like that energy shines through the video. I’m so grateful to have had such an amazing cast and crew, they fucking killed it. As for the concept, NRI was one of the very first concepts I started developing with my team. Had my first meeting with Angelica Milash, the director of the video, and everything clicked. The inspiration was drawn from aesthetics you’d see in legendary Hong Kong movies like Young & Dangerous. We also based the female looks on different characters from movies that included Asian characters with exaggerated Asian female stereotypes.

You once tweeted “I love good music but when an artist can pull off a great visual it tells you a lot about that artist.” Do you think it’s important for artists to be active creative directors in the videos they come out with?
Personally, I love dipping my fingers in every pot when it comes to my creative direction. I believe it takes a strong team in order to create beautiful shit, and, as the artist, I want to lead the team to victory. If one of us wins, we all win. Being active as a leader is what’s important. Sharing ideas, and building with the people around you. That’s how the best ideas shine through. You just gotta be a leader with this shit. Take control of your vision and work together to execute. If you aren’t paying attention to every aspect of your craft, you’re only going to see one perspective. At the end of the day, no one will execute your own ideas better than yourself. We all have that capability.
Your newest single “Akira Harakiri” is inspired by the 1988 cult cyberpunk film Akira. How did this iconic anime influence your lyrical and production process?
I wanted the essence of the track to emulate the same essence of the movie. The production was what sparked the idea. Colin Munroe was working on the beat while we bounced ideas around and I instantly felt the beat belonged in an anime. Akira was an automatic click. This song is supposed to feel like a song The Capsules gang would bump around Neo-Tokyo. I loved the dynamic between Kaneda and Tetsuo in the film, and wanted to combine the charisma and poise of Kaneda with the maniacal energy of Tetsuo. That’s also something I want to tap into on the visual component as well. This song is an homage to a visual masterpiece, as well as an iconic moment in film and culture.
What are some of your favorite anime films?
I grew up watching anime on TV like Dragonball Z, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Pokémon, Digimon. As I grew older, I wasn’t exposed to as much as before, but I rediscovered my love for it in high school when I binge-watched Death Note twice in succession. Now I’m trying to watch as much as possible. I feel like I have so much to catch up on lol.
What are some of your goals for 2020? Both as an artist and as a human being?
I want to work on killing the urge of having a cigarette or vaping again. I quit at the end of 2019, and started working out four times a day with my trainer. I’m trying to stay consistent in doing my laundry but that shit fucking sucks. I'm trying to meditate more, as I’ve recently picked up on transcendental meditation and want to keep consistent. Other than that I wanna keep dropping cool shit and repping what I know best. I wanna keep pushing myself to my limits and keep evolving. I hope people find strength in my music and I want to evoke new thought and conversation.
What can we expect to hear more of in your future projects?
More genuine energy. You’ll definitely be able to feel exactly how I felt when creating the music, from the growing pains to the gratitude. More singing too. You’ll be able to identify the spectrum of my sound, and how dynamic it is.
Who are your Ones to Watch?
I’ve been on my hip-hop shit as of late, so I’ve been bumping a lot of Kaash Paige, Fivio Foreign, The Kid LAROI and shit. Deb Never is an artist that I've been wanting to work with personally. Out of Toronto, definitely keep your eye out for Stefani Kimber. One of the most talented artists I’ve ever heard and a great human being. She’s definitely one of my top Ones to Watch artists.

Wayne Weizhen Zhang: A friend recently sent me a powerpoint presentation handed down from another friend entitled "Your Fave is Problematic: Why I Forbid You From Stanning Sam Smith" (sam-smith-is-cursed.pptx), 10 slides which methodically detail why his music is boring and shallow, and his celebrity status is problematic. At the time we weren't even talking about his music -- the conversation was started by a meme -- but I couldn't help but argue back that "Latch," "Omen," and maybe even "Dancing with a Stranger" are classic bops which prove he has at least some artistic merit. When I saw the release of "How Do You Sleep?" I had hoped that it might be a tiebreaker proving me right, but Sam Smith seems determined to make me look a fool: this is listless, sleepy mid-tempo filler which puts the "dull" in "adultery."

Nortey Dowuona: Sam Smith's work has been easy to forget, especially since his music without producers like Disclosure, Calvin Harris and Naughty Boy has been mostly mediocre. But here, he does the James Blake/Hudson Mohawke move of adopting the now easily copied trap drum patter and buries it underneath a sea of grainy, barely noticeable synths and pulls out some of his best singing for a while. The song is pretty dull, still.

Joshua Lu: When Sam Smith dropped a video teaser for "How Do You Sleep?" a few weeks back, I was instantly on board. The prospect of Sam doing choreography was exciting for many reasons, chief among them the fact that a music video with dancing probably necessitated a song that could be danced over, which aside from his EDM collaborations would've been new for him. Imagine my reaction, then, when not only did the song turn out to still just be moderately paced, Sam and his languid vocals didn't seem to be aware that he wasn't on a ballad. The choreography in the video might've made up for my disappointment, had the part where Sam actually got up from his chair and danced not been laid over that bizarre goose honk in the chorus.

Michael Hong: While the video for "How Do You Sleep?" feels like a response to everyone who criticized Sam Smith for not being queer enough, the track itself is far too carefully curated and too safe. Sam Smith may sound just as lovely as he does over those twinkling instrumentals as he does over a piano ballad, but here, he lacks any emotional depth. When he asks "how do you sleep when you lie to me?" he sounds bored rather than heartbroken. Throw in an unnecessary dance break after the first chorus and the entire thing just feels like it was created as a backdrop for the video. But hey, at least he's moved away from the formulaic balladry.

Oliver Maier: Smith's redirect from blue-eyed soul to dance music has been a smart move on the whole, injecting some pep into his step and shaking off some (keyword: some) of the lugubriousness that plagued his previous efforts as much as it defined them. "How Do You Sleep?" is the strongest argument for this course-correct yet, even if it's not quite the gem it could be. I like the twinkling synths in the intro so much that every staid production decision that follows -- from that clap sound to the eyeroll-inducing vocal bending in the post-chorus -- can't help but disappoint in comparison. The opening line "I'm done hating myself for feeling" doesn't exactly fill one with confidence either. Yet Smith salvages the track with a terrific hook and a strong vocal performance, marrying confident sensuality with desperation and lending a real sense of urgency to his anguish. Heartache is familiar territory for him lyrically, but Smith energises it here by displaying a willingness to do something about his crisis instead of resigning himself to moping.

Kayla Beardslee: Just like opening a bag of chips and finding it half-empty, "How Do You Sleep?" at first seemed colorful and promising but turned out frustratingly insubstantial. In theory, the stars should have aligned for this track to break Smith's recent trend of releasing glum, predictable songs: as his first single since January, there was incentive for it to sound like a hit, and he had even worked with the Max Martin cohort, some of pop's most reliable bop-makers. But in reality, even though it's upbeat, there's just nothing interesting to grab onto here. Smith is trying his hardest to emote, but over such a dull, basic instrumental, his efforts just sound out of place. The chorus melody is admittedly not terrible, especially the drop down on "All that fear and all that pressure," but that moment of pleasantness is immediately ruined by the following line, "I'm hoping that my love will keep you up tonight." I'm still having trouble believing that hook is real: it's the kind of cliche you would hear a fake pop star sing in a made-for-TV movie. And after that line, somehow, the song immediately tops itself again with one of the most bland, toothless drops I've heard this entire year. This drop means nothing, musically or lyrically, in the context of the song -- it's just an awful drop for the sake of it being an awful drop, and, like "How Do You Sleep" in its entirety, sounds like nothing more than the product of indifference.

Alfred Soto: Not a John Lennon, alas, but the joke's on me: expecting rancor and vengeance from Sam Smith is like expecting Billie Eilish to join the White Stripes. Until the inevitable chipmunk vocal manipulations, "How Do You Sleep?" is the usual thwacking electro melancholy.

Katherine St Asaph: Calvin Harris wrung unheard-of restraint out of Sam Smith's voice in "Promises," but whatever wizard miracle he pulled apparently doesn't work twice. The verses to "How Do You Sleep" are sung so breathy and hollow, so clearly at 10% capacity, that I just wish he'd sing out. Then he inevitably does that, and it's the same Auto-Tuned blare that people apparently love, but that to me has the unbearable volume, timbre and unchangingness of the smoke alarm going off. (How do you sleep through that, indeed.) "How Do You Sleep" then tries something else, a post-chorus of Bebe Rexha vocoder pirouettes, and I think: no, not that either. The instrumental is gorgeous, crystalline and wistful, and I have no idea what Sam Smith could do to best serve it, besides getting someone else to sing. Anyone heard from The Weeknd lately?

A Comprehensive Guide to DESURABBITS
Hey guys, your friendly cephalopod here to tell you all about the group I’ve fallen in love with!

So what is this group?
Formed as DEATHRABBITS (デスラビッツ) in late 2013 when the idol group usa☆usa Shoujou Club (usa☆usa少女倶楽部) of Mochizuki Emi, Okawa Yuzu, and Yasui Karin did a crossover unit featuring the section chief of their indies label G-ANGLE RECORDS and vocalist of the digital hardcore unit AKIRADEATH, Kanzaki Akira. While “Bucho” supplies backing death metal screams and often stands around menacingly in the background, the girls sing and dance like any other idol group. Their style is often described as “Japanese Death Pop”, often compared to BABYMETAL and (OG) LADYBABY with how it has maybe a slight bit of an edge compared to other songs in the idol genre, plus metal influences.
For the past six years, they’ve evolved their sound in a variety of different ways, trying different styles with their latest released song “Sotsugyou Shoujo- Mirai E” taking on more of a rock influence. They’re one of those groups that tends to just throw stuff at the wall to see what sticks. One of these being “ramen editions” of their singles. Starting in 2016, the singles sold at their live shows are packaged with dry ramen, and purchasing one also sends packets of ramen to disenfranchised areas of Malaysia. Unfortunately as of 2019, this is being discontinued (although the members and staff have expressed interest in replacing this with ramen edition goods). They’ve also changed their name (confusingly) a few times as well-- to Desu.Rabbits (です。ラビッツ) in 2016, and recently to DESURABBITS (デスラビッツ) in February 2019. Either way, most fans affectionately refer to them either as “DesuRabi” or “Rabbits.”
Also fun fact, Bucho is bffs with Ladybeard because of course those two are friends. They crowdfunded a unit song that’s a collaboration between their groups called “DEADLIFT RABBITS”

Mochizuki Emi (望月愛実)
Currently 17 and about to start her final year in high school, Emi is the youngest member of the group and was only a sixth grader in elementary school when she joined. Her parents were both involved in the music industry, leading her to become interested in becoming a singer from an early age. She’s the lead vocalist of the group as well as the center of all currently released songs. She’s the one who gets all of the long solo parts and has always had a rather strong voice since she joined.
Emi’s grown up A LOT since the early days (they’ve never posted heights on their profiles, so we’re not sure, but she has guessed that she’s grown about 15cm (~6 inches) and has gotten a much more mature hairstyle. As the baby of the group, in some of their older material, she would often come across as a little spoiled and quick-tempered and compared to that she’s really mellowed out, becoming more mature and cool-headed.
Her English pronunciation is impeccable, but she actually isn’t very good at speaking it in conversation.
Before member colors were abolished in 2019, her image color was pink!
She also posts song covers on her personal Youtube channel, but it hasn’t been active for a while.
Okawa Yuzu (大川柚)
Yuzu is the leader and often the one tasked with leading MCs and acting as the spokesperson of the group. Since joining, her catchphrase has been “Always full of energy,” which is something that describes her well. While she isn’t necessarily a ball of sunshine bouncing off the walls, she has more of an intense “Let’s give 100% to everything” sort of energy to her. She takes her role as leader very seriously; consulting with staff about the direction of the group and recently dying her hair ash pink and requesting that her new costume look “strong and like she can fight in it” in order to really highlight how their new era is about taking a new direction.
Since early childhood, Yuzu has aimed for a career in show business. Originally wanting to be a talent or a broadcaster, she eventually studied dance in order to become an idol. From there she made connections with singer-songwriter and producer of other idols and artists (such as KOTO, Terashima Yufu, and TsubasaFly), SAWA. She is the best dancer in the group, so look for her if there’s a dance break.
Her voice is the deeper one out of the girls, although she doesn’t get as many solo parts as Emi. It was announced recently that she will be getting her first center song as the double A-side with “Sotsugyo Shoujo”, “Demo, Nigenna.”
She’s also an avid bookworm and very studious, and will be attending university this spring.
Her member color was previously purple!
Yasui Karin (安井夏鈴)
Karin is the oldest of the three girls and the mood maker. She’s carefree and my pace beyond my pace. If she actually speaks during an MC (and isn’t just staring off into space the entire time), she will most likely forget what she’s saying halfway through the sentence because she’s always off in “Kariko World” as she calls it. She has a very distinct way of speaking that’s very slowly rhythmic, so she will often get speaking lines in songs (and recently something of a rap verse). Her singing voice is also the most “idol-like” of the three-- high pitched and sweet-- but while she also doesn’t get many solos, it’s very easy to pick out. Also she has such sweet guitar skills. She and Tomo-zo should totally collaborate. Totally.
I can’t find much about her background, but I do want to say on a personal note that she was the first member to remember my name and that I was a Bucho oshi after even the first time I saw them. And every time she’s the one taking the cheki, the camera “somehow” doesn’t have any film in it and you two just have to hold that pose for a bit. Karin will also be attending university in the spring and I am so proud of her.

The 41-year-old section head (or “bucho” in Japanese) at the record label G-ANGLE RECORDS with a background in singing in metal, grindcore, enka, and classical styles who was a vocalist in a handful of metal and rock bands from high school that never went anywhere, Bucho officially emerged in the music world in 2006 with the underground digital hardcore duo AKIRADEATH. As such, Bucho’s role in DESURABBITS is to provide backing death metal vocals (and rap). At 190cm (~6′5′’) with his gas mask and body armor, he can strike an intimidating figure. Despite this, he usually plays the part of a bumbling goofball of an “uncle” figure to the rebellious teenage girls. He himself is a huge idol wotaku (which is really annoying at events when you’re trying to get a two-shot with him and he’s wandered off to get in line for a different idol group. The girls however seem to find it hilarious to yell across the very crowded room for him to get back here because Loren wants to take a cheki with him) and has done video streams talking about the state of the idol industry. While he definitely doesn’t dance (but is incorporated into the choreography sometimes), he does his best in the back to kind of furi-copy or give gestures for the wota-gei if he’s not bumping into things.
As technically a part of the record label staff, there is something of a debate over his status of a member. Since the early days of the group, there was a theme of “Emi, Yuzu, and Karin vs. Bucho,” with even several of their one-man concerts being titled as such and given the caveat of “if tickets sell out, Bucho will be fired.” However, as of their 2019 makeover, it was announced that they will be “graduating” from this image and “allowing” Bucho to be a member.
In the earlier singles, his involvement was a lot larger (often having full verses), but his vocal parts have been scaled down a lot since 2015. Since 2018, he has remedied this by often having a DJ set up behind the girls and DJing live along with their performances (doing some sick mashups while singing, it’s pretty sweet), and their most recent song plays this up. He also does solo DJing as “DJ Bucho.” Not to be confused with “DJ Akira,” which is just what he calls himself when he talks in an “ikemen voice.”

Okay, so what about their music?
WELL I’M GLAD YOU ASKED. HAVE A COMPREHENSIVE LIST OF MY OPINIONS.
“Idol STAR WARS”
Their very first song. The girls are at peak baby. Emi is a literal fetus.
I actually really like the instrumental for this, it has a bit of a gritty electronic edge to it. It sets the precedent for their style of “cute but with a screaming man”, but is a bit more so, because Bucho actually has verses???
The chorus is pure sugar pop though I love it
But what I love more is Bucho just hecking going off with the verbal keysmash screams after the final chorus. Fucking spectacular you funky bastard.
I’m pretty sure they only filmed like seven minutes of video for the music video. I’m not convinced Bucho and the girls were ever in the same building.
“Hell Near Bucho ~ Ugokisugi da yo Nihonjin 2013 ~”
The B-side off of Idol STAR WARS, so still pretty old form with the line distribution but
Bucho screaming about having a hernia for four minutes
ngl because of the title being partly in English and the album version having a random-ass intro with an American woman talking about Bucho battling an endless battle with the enemy of “hell near” i didn’t actually make the connection for months and thought this was like. DesuRabi Lore.
OKAY BUT THAT CHORUS IS SO CATCHY AND PEAK IDOL I LOVE IT
And A+ screaming I love it
I really want to see it live at least once because the “Hell! Near! Bucho!” chant part sounds like it would go so hard
“Koisuru Kisetsu”
Second single, getting into their style a bit more
But they still acknowledge that like... Bucho has a name.
I highly recommend checking out the subbed version because the things Bucho is screaming about are just. What.
Literal Rabbits to represent Emi, Yuzu, and Karin
Emi, Yuzu and Karin just being like “The lyrics are kinda dark... Bucho’s singing about his love life again lmao let’s just hecking change this song because we wanna sing something else
Just hecking shove him behind some fake cherry trees. He’ll be fine.
“Omatsuri JAPAN!! Kokuhaku Night”
This is probably their most straight-up idol song. Like you could legit just have this song without him grunting in the background, but why would you want that.
Like that sounds weird by itself but trust me it really pumps up the energy of the song
It’s one of the songs that’s an absolute bop at lives, especially when they shuffle around who does the “Daisuki desu” line. And then we mosh.
Listen it just has such a great energy that you don’t always get in the “cute summer love song” niche of idol songs and I greatly appreciate this
“DESURABBITS Gun no 7 Kajou”
Another one I highly recommend watching the subbed version for because it outlines the ���Seven rules of the DESURABBITS Army”, and is basically the theme song and list of principals for the group and fans.
Music and MV aside, I want to say that this was one of the things that REALLY sold me on the group, as the rules are all “do your best at your life outside lives, be kind to one another and the live venue” and the fanbase really reflects that. Like they’ve welcomed me more than Gachamen/pinkos which is kind of an accomplishment.
Like you don’t gotta make your edgy idol group 2edgy4me, you can still be about respecting the fans of other groups and the other fans and just having a good time.

Yuzu: Yeah we have no idea what the fuck Bucho is ever saying
Emi’s vocals in the pv are really great for her age and I wish there were better quality live versions for it recently bc dang she’s improved so much
This is another goes absolutely insane at lives with the “WE! ARE! DESURABBITS! DESU!” chant it’s amazing
I do kinda love the bit where it looks like they’re going to go into a dance break and all they do is... spin.
Also they call Bucho a mascot character

Honestly this song is just kind of hilarious once you realize that it’s basically just “don’t talk shit online and come watch our shows”
Complete with Bucho fucking murdering the Twitter bird
They’re starting to change their styles a bit with many tonal shifts and fewer Bucho parts. I’m not personally too into the verses, but I do like the choruses
I really dig the way they go in on the “pyons” at the beginning as well as the piano parts
DJ AKIRA GA KONNICHIWA
“Chuuni no Natsu. Ojisan no Natsu.”
This is a very good summery idol song just in general and mood which I love, with that lovely piano, string, and Emi-solo intro. Very refreshing and nostalgic with a good energy to it.
THEY LET BUCHO SING!!!! About how much he wants to go to the beach but can’t because he has work just let him go.
But for real, I really love his singing voice here. It matches well and has a bit of a punk rock sound to it which is my jam outside of idols. Also in the last chorus the way all four of them harmonize is surprisingly nice!
Also as a song that really sums up the relationship between Bucho and Emi, Yuzu, and Karin, it’s hilariously fitting.

First things first the video is amazing like could you guys not shoot on the same day who came up with the story what is going on who believes Bucho could fight ninjas
But honestly that’s kind of the point
ngl this is my favorite DesuRabbi song, because:
A) HOOKS FOR DAYS. From the “nande naze nande naze nande naze” to the “chikirichi, chikirichi, chikirichi” to the “nande, nee, nande”
B) honestly joining the fandom I was in the mindset where I needed something to express my “why what what the fuck what why what”
and this song supports that that is okay. If you can’t have a happy idol song that is just like “lmao we don’t know what’s going on and that’s fine” idk you’re a stronger person than me I guess??
Also the video
This also really marks the shift into Bucho taking a backseat to the girls, which ye Emi’s voice is clearly getting stronger
But tbh the highlight for me is Karin’s solo at the start of the bridge. Her voice is perfect for the whimsical tone they’re going for at that part of like “hey it doesn’t matter my dude!”
“Shitsuren Shitara Wasabi”
Okay, just gonna be up front, I’m not the biggest fan of their 2016-2018 “です。ラビッツ” era songs. They tried experimenting with songs a lot more with tone changes and different styles, and honestly I just found them lacking the same energy. However, I love this song a lot as it has that with that same “throw a bunch of things at the wall at once”
The tone is a lot more mature than their older material, but you still get the energy, especially in that chorus
The girls are the focus, and even though Emi still has ALL OF THE SOLOS, Yuzu gets some spots too, especially her spoken line which kind of makes this “her song” among her oshis and I’m really happy that she got that since she was the only one who didn’t have that before this
The lyrics are just so hopeful and good??? Idk maybe I’ll translate someday
WASABI WASABI WASABI KURE
“Sotsugyou Shojo-Mirai E-”
Or as I like to call it “When the heck did you guys get a budget???”
This is the first song with a different producer and uh... yeah you can tell. It’s radically different with a darker, rock image, but the lyrics are really hopeful and nice. I translated them over on my jp twitter if you’re interested??

Yuzu’s voice suits this well with her very short solos. I feel like Karin’s solo singing part barely sounds like her, but I do like her little “rap”
And of course Bucho’s rap. What a nerd I love him.
Seriously where did they get a music video budget
I’m more into their old stuff just because that’s what I like, but I do really appreciate that they went for a harder sound but keeping the hooks and the hopeful outlook and the weird old man who stands behind them
This is most definitely the most intense dance they’ve done. Emi and Karin tried very hard.
Okay we get it so how do we follow them?
Unfortunately, on one hand, DesuRabi very much are focused on live performances as part of the underground idol tradition. They don’t have a very active release schedule, and while their Youtube channel sometimes posts live videos, it’s a bit sporadic. HOWEVER, they are a group that if you somehow manage to get to Japan, I would HIGHLY recommend checking out, if only for the fact that they have lives almost every weekend which are very cheap and very easy to get tickets to. Unless it’s a larger event or through a different event planner, usually you just reserve under a name and email and pay at the door. The DesuRabi Army is super nice and accepting and I will possibly be there.

They’re all fairly active on twitter (although Karin will sometimes just kind of... fade from existence). Emi, Yuzu, and Karin seem to have SOME rules on when they can reply, but Bucho just replies whenever he wants, which is often.
