First Impression: Nietzsche-sensei - Konbini ni, Satori Sedai no Shinjin ga Maiorita

Nietzsche-sensei - Konbini ni, Satori Sedai no Shinjin ga Maiorita (which roughly translates to “Mr. Nietzsche in the Convenience Store”) is about Matsukoma, who has been working night shifts at a convenience store. The store gets a new part-timer named Niitomo Haru, who is a college student studying Buddhism. On his first shift, an angry customer shouts at Niitomo, "Customers are gods!" In turn, he replies, "God is dead." Will Matsukoma and “Nietzsche-sensei” be able to survive the night shift together?

I found Nietzsche-sensei to be quite a humorous read, despite there being no real plot. I enjoyed the interactions between Matsukoma and Niitomo, and particularly those between Niitomo and the customers who frequent the convenience store.

Niitomo interprets everything literally, spits out philosophical one-liners (which often make Matsukoma question his life), and disarms customers with his blunt attitude. Both of the main characters represent the feelings of those who have had to work in any job dealing with customers (especially Niitomo, who is now my new spirit animal).

I look forward to reading volume two of Nietzsche-sensei and would recommend checking it out if you enjoy comedy, Nietzsche, or just generally abhor dealing with customers.

college student!tendou who kinda has a reputation for being really hard to get. like yeah he's odd, but girls hit on him a lot despite that. in fact, you think that they do it because of that. but yeah, satori is popular beyond belief, with a reputation for turing down just about every person that propositions him. so it's a bit of a shock when he approaches you first.

at first it's friendly. you're pulled into his orbit as easily as anyone else is, falling victim to the precise feeling of his vision and the way he talks. you like being around him and while you'll admit that he's attractive, that's really all it is. besides, you're not exactly interested in a guy who knows what sort of reputation he has, hard to get or not.

"hey," he chimes from the couch beside you.

the small party goes on around you both, sat on the couch with your drinks in hand. both of you are deep in a slouch, the tips of your knees just barely touching.

"yeah?" you tilt your head, raising an eyebrow.

"wanna hook up?" he asks, sipping his drink and looking over the rim of his cup at you with knowing eyes.

"the hell did you just say to me?" you snort in near disbelief.

"i asked if you wanted to hook up," satori clarifies in a needlessly annunciated tone.

you squint at him for a moment, trying to figure out what his angle is. as far as you know, satori's never been so forward with anyone and if he just wanted a quick fuck, he'd have his pick of the litter in a very real sense. he eyes you for a moment as if he can tell what you're thinking and you struggle to figure out if he's joking on not. you settle on the former.

"and what about your reputation, mr. hard-to-get?" you laugh a little, leaning forward and aiming to project a confidence in yourself.

satori leans forward with his elbows on his knees. his lips curl into a mischievous smile and his fingers hold the cup between his hands so gingerly that it seems he might drop it. he angles his head up so that he's eye-level with you, his adam's apple bobbing heavily as he swallows.

"reputation?" he smirks, "id give up my whole fucking career if it meant getting some tail from you."

you blink at him and for a moment he just looks at you, that sly cat's grin smooth on his lips. then, he leans back with a shrug.

"think it over."

I love how almost everything is connected in will woods music so I’m gonna ramble about it (hopefully coherently) to spare people who know me in real life.

Firstly (I’ve already mentioned this on another post about this band), going all the way back to a verbal equinox, the character of dr sunshine shows up again in self- ish in dr sunshine is dead. Also the line “I’m far too weird to live, but I ain’t too weird to die” is reworked to “too weird to love, too scared to die” in outliars and hyppocrites.

Going to EIAL, the phrase “draw a line in the sand” from chemical overreaction is also seen in Marsha thankk you for the dialectics. And omg destroy to enjoy is pretty much just a reference to self- ish. The line “glory be satori but it’s all hallucinatory…” is in 2012, also with a reference to “mahaprajnaparimita” which also is mentioned in 2012.

Self- ish is pretty much all connected, with the first and last songs, self and ish, basically being one song split into two. Dr sunshine is dead, cotards solution and mr capgras are all connected musically, and also interestingly capgras and cotards are both mental illnesses, specially delusions, which makes their connection to dr sunshine make more sense (that might be a bit of a stretch though). The song with five names and hand me my shovel I’m going in are perfect parallels, and the repeated lyrics less tune of “gotta get to the bottom of this” playing in the second verse of the song with five names can also kinda be heard in wealth and hellness by human zoo in the bit will wood sings in. There’s also the reference to hand me my shovel I’m going in during half decade hangover. The song had come out in 2016, which was just over half a decade before icimi came out. 2012 is interestingly the only one without much of a connection. Not sure why yet, might just be for the sake of it.

The normal album. I love the normal album. Suburbia overture references the other songs so much and I love it. (There’s only one other album that I know does this: enter a beginners guide to faking your death by jhraiah- go listen to it). The first reference to another song is the line “myers briggs, okultra” which is a reference to Blackboxwarrior okultra. It’s also kinda interesting that it’s referenced alongside a “psychology” term as the song is full of psychology references. The second reference is “everybody knows that, nobody knows that, everybody’s all up in my- everybody’s all up in my- everybody’s all up in my business” which is a reference to …well better than the alternative. During the spoke part of vampire culture, the backing music is from Blackboxwarrior. The line “you pull out your roscharch like a paint by numbers treasure map” could be a reference to outliars and hyppocrates, in the line “prints of your fingers in the roscharch jigsaw say you saw a treasure map”. Finally and obviously, love me normally is referenced in the title of the song, and the end of the song is the beginning to love me normally. I don’t know if this is a stretch/ coincidence, but a part of good morning campers from chnt (or welcome to camp here and there, l can’t remember) kind of sounds like the part of outliars and hyppocrates: “who’s wanna be human anyways, i mean what do people do”.

I can’t find any connections that I haven’t already mentioned in icimi because I haven’t been listening to it as much (most songs make me cry), but its still a good album :D

I’ve decided to make this a series, because if I decided to write this whole thing down it would be about 1000+ words, and it would take like a month to write and fix everything up !

ever since you were a baby, you were passed around. Handed to one person and then the next. You were always applauded for being able to take care of yourself at such a young age. During your elementary years you would be lucky to see him a few times a month, But as the years grew the amount of times you saw your father lessened, you'd usually see him every other month, but your conversations together always ended up in someone arguing. You lived by “yourself” and your cat, Soari. Sometimes you had one of your friends check on you if you needed something, and of course, your dad would drop by every now and then to check up on the house and to see if it was clean. You really tried your best to be the best daughter you could. you’d leave dinner in the fridge for your father to bring to lunch, tell him about your achievements, but he always seemed tired, stressed out or uninterested.

you were now in High-School, attending Yokosuka High School, a school for people who don’t use their quirks. Your grades are not the best. But who would care? Clearly not your father. You could have good grades if you wanted. But there was no point.

Your father would usually get calls from the school every now and then about punching another student, failing a class, concerning scars on your legs/arms.

MAY 27, 2018.

Today, Mr. Ito, your principal called you into the office. You had no idea what it was about. Probably about grades or something between those lines.

“Y/N, I’ve called you here to talk about your grades and how you’re doing at home.” Mr. Ito said with a cheeky smile. Huh? Why does he want to know about my home life? I’m doing perfectly fine on my own. You thought to yourself.

“So, it seems you’re failing 3 classes out of the 7 you have. What’s going on with that?” God. This was so embarrassing. You just kept your mouth closed and looked down into your lap.

“Ok, then. Don’t speak if you don’t want to. But I’ve also wanted to tell you if you needed anyone to talk to, you could always talk to Ms. Satori, our counselor. She’s located at B11 on the 2nd floor.”

You looked up

“Is that all?” You asked Mr. Ito with an annoyed tone in your voice.

“oh!” He exclaimed

“No actually, I forgot to tell you, I’ll be calling your father later to talk about so after school activities to get you more active!” “uhm.. ok. Goodbye Mr. Ito.” You said. as you walked out his office you headed straight to the bathroom, you didn’t wanna go to 5th period, nor 7th. You just wanted school to be over.

Synopsis

Tendou Satori is the right hand man to Ushijima Wakatoshi, the powerful, yet relatively underground mafia lord. After seeing the head maid at work, caring, feeding, and schooling Ushijima’s children, he decides that he has to have her for himself, dark urges he suppressed his whole life becoming more and more evident the longer he lives without her. He is convinced he loves her, but can she feel the same way when his actions become stifling and intrusive? Probably not, but it wouldn’t matter anyway.

Prologue:

What A Mess

Satori Tendou

She was one of his favorite members that occupied the Shiratorizawa grounds. As the head maid, she took care of Ushijima Wakatoshi’s children, the children who had almost everything at their small fingertips. She was sweet and gentle, a stark contrast to the woman that he saw laughing and spitting vulgar jokes with the rest of the staff that she was housed with. Tendou couldn’t lie, he was smitten for both of the sides that he witnessed every day, always attempting his best to get a glimpse of her before he had to do the important tasks set out for him. This maid had captured his soul, devouring it whole and leaving none for himself.

“Good afternoon Mr. Tendou,” a soft smile graced her lips, bowing respectfully to the man in front while readjusting her glasses farther up the bridge of her nose. Oh how cute he found that nose to be. “How are you on this fine morning sir?”

“You can drop the formalities with me, darling,” Tendou smiled, positively basking in the shock that washed across her face when the name fell from his lips. “Just call me Satori.”

She squeaked a little in surprise, a slight blush dusting her sweet, plump cheeks. Tendou smirked watching her stutter over her words like a love struck idiot. “O-of course Mr.-”

Before she could finish, a pointed look was directed her way, his eyebrows rising yet his amusement written plain as day in his intriguing, yet rather peculiar, eyes. She chuckled lightly, glancing away from him for a moment. “Of course, Satori.”

“There we go,” Tendou grinned, shoving his hands deep into his pockets. “Much better if ya ask me. Say, I see you round here a lot. You take care of Ushiwaka’s kids?” Tendou asked this as a formality as if he didn’t know what job she did on the grounds, where she lived, her sleeping habits and social security number. He couldn’t reveal all that, not yet.

“Ah, yes I do,” she smiled, nodding along as she spoke, staring up at him. “They are very well behaved kids. Stoic like their father. There’s hardly anything I need to do except keep them well educated and fed.”

“Mm yes, they are very well behaved,” Tendou agreed nonchalantly, mind wandering as he began to stare rather intensely into her eyes. Whilst doing so, the conversation seemed to fall flat, only reigniting when the tower clock chimed. Eight clear bells resonated through the grounds, knocking them out of their inner thoughts.

She was so perfect it hurt him, and he was determined to have her.

Since I've been into Bauhaus for years and B-T members have mentioned them as an influence, going deep into the roots is something I enjoy. I wasn't sure of writing this (long post), but the two bands are really important at a personal level, gonna share some thoughts.

The first time I watched Physical Neurose PV, the aesthetics inmediately reminded me of Telegram Sam MV. Sakurai has mentioned that he enjoyed "Shadow of Light" (1984), an archive with promotional videos of the band. So, it's possible he got some inspiration from it.

Tbh, there are several interviews where Sakurai (love him for being enthusiastic about the band) shows his appreciation for them, their image and Peter Murphy's vocals. He has highlighted Mask and The Sky's Gone Out as important records since he was a teenager.

It is well known that B-T members enjoy post-punk and goth bands, Imai's love for Love & Rockets, and Hidehiko and Yuta have also shown interest in Bauhaus and Peter Murphy's solo albums. They even got Daniel Ash in Schiz.o Genso -the spiderman mix-.

Six/nine videos also make me recall Bauhaus live at Riverside (1982), look at Murphy's outfit, body language, his extravagant dance moves, and the spotlight game. Also, Ash & Murphy dynamics on stage were similar to Atsushi & Hisashi in early performances.

Another example of getting inspiration from the English band might be in the title of "Mr. Darkness and Mrs. Moonlight", which made me remember "Who Killed Mr. Moonlight". Maybe it's a coincidence but as a fan, it didn't go unnoticed.

And of course here, I'm going to mention The Mortal's cover of Spirit <3 (I was very moved when I listened to this cover for the first time).

Gonna add this Bauhaus live version too 'cause it's so good and when you watch The Mortal's live version you can tell that Sakurai has possibly watched this performance at least once.

I recommend to watch that entire show (Gotham, 1999), if you like vampiric costumes, hats and boas.

I'll finish by saying that Issay & Atsushi went to watch Murphy's live shows together during the 90s, soo lovely! It's cool to see how music connects people and inspires.

I almost sent you an ask to see if you would draw Tendou and his Wobbuffet, but then I had other pokemon ideas for him and just couldn't decide. I love that he has a battle cafe!!!

I just feel like he'd have been a trainer and not want to fully give that up but part of his passion lies in making confectioneries, so he does both!

Wobbufett wasn't on my list but yeah I can see that, I just wanted him to have a bunch of silly little guys as well as some food Pokémon. Not pictured are Fidough, Polteageist, Tangela, Mr. Rime, Shuckle, and enough Unown to spell Tendou Satori above his head for a little flourish. But, Spinda, Alcremie, and Kecleon were the first three I thought of.
