#More like 'Morally Grey Lloyd' really
Text
I see y'all with your Quiet One Lloyd AUs and I raise you:
AU where Lloyd never met the Ninja again after their initial encounter in Jamanakai Village. He ran off before he could fall into the Hypnobrai tomb, so no one, least of all the Hypnobrai themselves, have any idea how or why it opened.
Couple years down the line, the Ninja (who still have no idea who the Green Ninja is) are getting their butts handed to them by a mysterious masked stranger, wielding an unknown element in the form of some sort of destructive, green-and-purple energy. An out-of-breath Kai angrily demands to know who this guy is, prompting the assailant to dramatically pull off his hood and mask and say,
"What, you've hung so many kids from roofs you can't even remember all of them?"

Time for Aus :D
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Poster/ desings are not final)
Details:
Eclipse:
Takes place after crystallized, the ninja have recovered their powers and got back to the status quo.
Rumors start spreading on the Internet that Kai is actually useless because he's never defeated a supervillain on his own. Kai gets insecure about his worth to the rest of the team, acting more and more rashly out of the need to prove himself. However, everyone else thinks he's overreacting for attention, so in a mission with Lloyd and Nya, after trying too hard and messing up, they snap at him, thinking he just wants to regain his popularity disregarding people's safety.
Much later, Kai is injured on a solo mission and is saved by a mysterious woman (the villain) who secretly aims to manipulate him to turn against the ninja and Ninjago as a whole, taking advantage on his past hardships as a child and his current mixed feelings towards them. She uses dark magic (sort of like Clause) to take and amplify what little is left of the corruption from Chen's elements staff into a mask, to slowly make his own thoughts turn against them all, eroding him from inside out.
At first she convinces him to become a kind of vigilante, killing criminals who might have used him in the past under said mask as Akatora ("Red Tiger"), steadily growing more corrupted.
Once the ninja discover Akatora's true identity, they believe he's being forced to betray them and try to "save" him, which only angers Kai further for not realizing how badly they've treated him.
But when they realize that they're at fault, the team splits in two: Cole, Jay and Pixal can't see a way of saving Kai on time before he self-destructs and takes the entire city down with him; while Lloyd, Nya and Zane try to get him back at all costs.
At first, the villain didn't care which elemental master to use to get the ninja to destroy the city. But upon finding out more about Kai's past, she decides the Ninja are no good for him and wants to "save" him, to get him out of that toxic environment. She even confronts them more than once after taking him under her wing. However, later on she changes her mind...
I have many more details but this is all I'll say for now. I want to make it a realistic and morally grey season where neither the ninja nor Kai are the villain, because the ninja do love Kai, they just have to show it. Also Kai's corruption is going to be slow where you don't really know how of it is Kai's true intentions.
On the road:
This AU is set years after Kai and Nya's parent's disappearence. Despite still living at the blacksmith off Kai's odd jobs, the siblings are fairly neglected by the townspeople of Ignacia. After getting seriously beat up in a fight with some kids who had been passive-agressively bullying Kai for years, they go a little too far by almost killing him and threatening to do the same to Nya. Kai is forced to abandon the hope of their parents ever returning and leaves for Ninjago City with Nya, hoping for a better life.
After travelling for a while they stumble across Ronin. They somehow convince him to take them in for a while in his rudimentary shed and to teach Kai how to hunt and be more self-sufficient for the journey. In the meantime, Nya shows off her handiwork, making toys off scraps for Ronin to sell as thanks. When they decide to part ways, Ronin gives them a map, setting them on the right direction (he's no babysitter, but hey, he actually cared).
Days later, Nya finds a hungry and weary Lloyd along the way, lost after escaping Darkleys and looking for his uncle Wu. After some convincing from Nya, they agree to take him in and start travelling together, eventually bonding and becoming a found family.
The Au is mostly about their (fun) little adventures and Kai being an overstressed mom trying to keep their younger siblings alive and relatively out of trouble (but don't worry, he's actually enjoying it).
In the end, after having taken their shot in Ninjago, they find Wu and are taken in at the monastery. Yes, Wu is actually a good uncle here. They deserve it. Especially Kai.
Kai is 13, Nya 11 and Lloyd 9 (older than canon, no tomorrow's tea)
Feel free to ask any questions about the aus.

GASP you have an “The Island” rewrite idea? TELL US EVERYTHING—
The Ninjago comics have some great ideas of other things that could have happened (like a boat race over lightning waters, a motorcycle escape from baby dragons, more on Misako’s pre-special adventures on the Island, etc.) but I’m so curious about your rewrite ideas :D
When we first got the trailer for The Island, I lowkey thought they were gonna take the "Misako goes missing and Lloyd tries to find her" premise and use it to at least briefly touch on their relationship. Which I was...cautiously optimistic for. Lord knows how badly Misako needs an actual character arc.
So that's the core of what I'd do with an Island rewrite. Use that plotline the facilitate a narrative about the past complications of their relationship, as well as Lloyd's fear of being abandoned/left alone.
For a long time, I've had this scene idea in my brain of Misako and Lloyd being lost in a labyrinthine cave full of strange glowing stone, and she explains that the reason she'd been seeking out the island is because of rumors that this very cave had the power to reveal secret information. However, the danger of the cave is that few people are ever able to leave it alive, as it traps most who enter. She reluctantly hoped the cave could tell her where she went wrong, what she did wrong - she did everything she could to prevent the Final Battle, but it happened anyway. She wanted to know if there was anything at all that she could've done to change that, or if her family was doomed from the start. This is also why Wu joined her for this expedition - he wanted those answers too.
As they walk through the cave in search of a way out, Lloyd asks more about her motives: how she knew he was the Green Ninja, why she left Lloyd at Darkleys of all places, and most importantly why she never came back for him even to visit. She explains herself, with the stones and stalagmites of the cave glowing as they reflect memories from her past. And finally, they have a little bit of closure from this conversation. It is then that they learn the cave only lets you leave once you have accepted the truth of the information you sought, hence why so few people ever escape - most people cant reconcile the harsh truths this cave confronts them with. Misako accepts that there was nothing she could have done to prevent destiny and Lloyd works through some of his abandonment issues, prompting the cave to set them free so they can go join the rest of their friends in the big climactic battle.
Idk. I may also include a scene like that in another fic or something. We'll see, I guess.
Also, I'd probably change the uh. Troublingly stereotypical human sacrifice depictions for the Keepers. And also just like, give Mamatus more of an actual character and personality. Maybe the islanders arent the villains but allies! Perhaps the rewrite focuses more so on Ronin as an antagonist - while also providing more in-character rationalization for his actions. Because while I do like the idea of Ronin as a villain, it feels a bit odd to have him go from a morally grey ally who at least sympathizes with the ninja even when he's not on their side, to a generically roguish villain. Let's dive into what prompted him to pursue such a high-scale crime!
Also, the keepers and Wojira talk may also prompt more discussion about some creation mythology and lore, Wojira's past and reign of terror before the FSM and Nyad came along, to really hammer in why they're so afraid of her. This would add some more setup for Seabound, as well as preemptively establish Wojira as a truly terrifying threat.
I can't say I have a thorough outline for what exactly the rewrite would look like, mostly just a few loose ideas here and there, but that's the general gist of what I've got so far!

What if there were two?
So…me and my sister were talking about the lore and stuff and trying to think of its definitive timelines.
Even trying to make the Ninjas grow, since LMK is set as New Generation from Ninjago.
Then we got to Kai and Lloyd and how they tend to mirror each other in a lot of the time.
Both Kai and Lloyd mirror each other from their backstories to their characters.
-Both basically grew up with no parents
-Both were power hungry for the sense of control and to protect those they love
-Both fell in love with people associated with the enemy.
-Both grew up with hardships or had to grow up quicker compared to the other ninja.
-Both are hot-headed and ill-tempered.
-Both prefer to use blades as weapons
-Both are basically the premise of what a dragon is supposed to symbolize (Fire and Positions of High Power)
-When angry their powers show off like flames (Lloyd’s Oni powers look like purple fire)
-Both actually take Wu’s teaching’s and warning carefully pre-season 8, the only reason they stopped is both because of season 11 and because they’ve worked without Wu for so long, they actually don’t seem to depend on him for a long time after Season 7 (I refuse to believe it was in a span of a few months)
-Both of their elements usually symbolize Creation and Destruction (Fire is used to Heat food, warm people and light ways in darkness, but also bring destruction everywhere, same with Lloyd’s powers if he chooses to uses the other)
So…we were like…what if…there was two possibilities for being the Green Ninja?
One was Lloyd…the other was Kai…
Both had a possibility of being the Green Ninja, but only one could ever be.
And when one was chosen, the other was supposed to be the Yang to the Green Ninja’s Yin.
As Lloyd and Kai can also be opposites in some way.
-We noticed that Lloyd could possibly mirror Wu more than his own father, via morals, leadership skills and holding himself back with his powers (They really nerfed him in the newer seasons) meanwhile Kai seems to mirror Garmadon, he tends to be more destructive and aggressive than Lloyd when it comes to combat and leadership (Lloyd takes things into thought, while Kai seems to take things head on)
-Both come into terms with death differently, Kai uses it as a chance to grow his strength and take out his anger, while Lloyd matches it to his identity. When Lloyd grieves he uses his identity to change when he does, if he couldn’t save Zane, he should be a better leader, if he couldn’t save Nya, maybe he’s not cut out to save anyone. While Kai uses his anger and either influences or takes it out on other people, like being in a fighting ring or training kids to basically be soldiers.
-Speaking of identity, Kai and Lloyd take being a ninja through different ways, Lloyd makes it his whole identity, Kai thinks it’s his purpose. While both are the same, they have different roles to play for it. Lloyd thinks he HAS to be the Green Ninja because that’s who he is, as seen in Crystallized, he seems to hate being the Son of Garmadon more than being the Green Ninja or a nobody, causing me to believe he chose the path of destiny because If he couldn’t be the ‘Evil warlord son of Garmadon’ then he should be the Green Ninja, while Kai sees it as an occupation for purpose, being a ninja to him is to be a soldier for others, he feels like he has to be a ninja in order to protect people, and that’s its only true purpose (Notice how when Kai’s ‘Sensei Kai’ in Crystallized and how Kai’s ‘The Red Shogun’ in Tournament of Elements. Kai doesn’t do hero work, he only fights and teaches how to fight)
-Both see the world as different views of black and white, sometimes even grey. When it comes to enemies, Lloyd and Kai sometimes see the world as black and white. Lloyd and Kai both see an enemy as an enemy, but the moment they see reason within an enemy’s eyes and can change it depends on both of the two men. If Lloyd were to see the world in grey, he would find the goodness in people’s hearts (IE, Harumi, Zane and even his own father) That alone takes a lot of effort to convince him otherwise, while Kai sees the world in grey but the darker side to Lloyd’s sight, one Kai believes he can’t trust you, he can’t, it would take a lot of convincing as well, but you really need to prove yourself, Lloyd on the other hand is just magic of friendship convincing at this point.
-Lloyd tends to be less confident compared to Kai, for Kai has trouble admitting when he’s wrong because he’s more stubborn and won’t let anyone boss him around while Lloyd tends to need the support of everyone around him.
That’s all I can think about them being similar but opposites in a way that makes it think that there were two possibilities that Kai or Lloyd would have been chosen. I think the reason why Lloyd was chosen, is considering his way of thinking, it was more plausible for Lloyd to become the Green Ninja, since Cloud Kingdom decides past, present or future.
I also think that’s what Fennwick meant by the chose Lloyd, because he was talking about that there was another possibility for the Green Ninja, they just ended up with Lloyd because the role seemed to suit him better.

Rating the ninjago characters (the main + whatever side characters I decide to include) from most to least likely to condone murder
1. Mystake
It’s canon tommy said so
2. Skylor
The girl was raised in a snake cult I feel like if someone was enough of a nuisance to ninjago she’d be down for murder. Or if you guys were particularly good friends and you had a really scummy ex.
3. Pixal
She knows all of ninjago laws by heart but unlike Zane she’s more than willing to use loopholes to get results
4. Nya and Cole
It wouldn’t be their first option but they’d be willing to hide a body for their friends and family without question
5. Kai
Same as Nya and Cole except he would ask SO many questions before deciding whether or not to become an accomplice
6. Jay
I love him so much but he wouldn’t last a day in jail without his powers and he knows it lol
7. Zane
He still has trauma from the Never-Realm and subconsciously is terrified that if he ever even thinks about doing anything morally grey that he will slip into becoming the Ice Emperor
8. Lloyd
Canonically Lloyd is absolutely petrified of becoming his father/oni so to him that means being nothing less than straight and narrow at all time. Basically the same reason as Zane but his is a fear that he is inherently evil for not only being related to garmadon but because he has had some of that darkness in him since birth and deep down he knows that’s not something he can run away from forever.

More random Ninjago thoughts.
What if when Harumi brings oni Garmadon back, she Also brings back Sensei Garmadon. He like, sneaks out by following his ‘evil’ counterpart. And since he doesn’t have someone activily fueling him like she does to oni garm, it takes him much longer to find his way. He literally like stumbles into the monastary a few days after the last fight. Lloyd full on thinks he’s losing his mind or that it’s a trick of oni garm, that he’s come back to hurt him again. But he’s still like sore and shit from the fight that ended in oni garm being locked up and so sensei garm looks at his beat up son and is like What happened???
Eventually he manages to convince Lloyd he’s Really back this time. And while he does’t have All of his memories, he knows enough about his past to know that he hurt Lloyd, even when he wasn’t under the influence of the Devouer. He Also learns from one of the others what his oni counterpart Did to Lloyd, that horrible fight in the prison. And That’s when he finally puts together the pieces of why his son is flinching away from him and distant.
And also, just imagine someone trying to hurt lloyd in later seasons and Both versions of Garmadon show up ready to kick ass. They may not agree on everything and one of them might be more morally grey than good, but they’ll both be damned if Anyone else tries to hurt their son.

saw a post that really annoyed me but also made me have sort of a breakthrough
Another thing seasons 8 to 10 have an issue with is how the writers never manage to pick what they actually want the 'new, darker' ninjago to be. There's several elements of good plot threads in there, but the writers are still basically working off their usual formula, and ultimately they end up mashing idea several ideas that don't work.
Case in point: Harumi.
(for the record. This isn't an anti-Harumi post. This is an anti-Ninjago writer post.)
I've heard lots of praise for Harumi, sure, but none of it ever seems to be like. directed towards the character in the actual show. She's supposed to be seen as someone who was pushed to their limits for reviving Garmadon fully evil, except when Lloyd points out that she'll end up killing several other families like hers and she just says 'nah fuck them'. She's supposed to be evil, except she does legitimately donate food to the poor of the city. Her death is supposed to be a tragedy, but she's said she wanted to torment Lloyd in gruesome detail on screen after manipulating him and generally being creepy as all hell.
Most egregiously, her motivation of losing her parents is supposed to be more 'morally grey' than the other villains, but in actual fact it's just Nadakhan and Morro's backstories stitched together with edgy black thread. In actual fact, she lost her parents as a child - which is admittedly traumatic, but then she was adopted into royalty, and then proceeded to start a criminal empire.
Nobody fucking goes that far. They dismiss some of that inherent privilege by saying 'oh she had to go through a lot of training to be perfect at all times', but they don't fucking show that. You have to make that up.
In all honesty, as someone who's gone through a tough upbringing myself, season 8 put a very bad taste in my mouth of what the writers think happened to traumatised kids. All we really see is a princess with the most twisted, villain-ball idea of how to do good in the world, but who also might've been right in her own way despite that.
Tumblr media
This frame from OSP's video on villains pretty much sums up everything I think about Harumi.
These are both quite good bases for an antagonist, but Harumi never fully gets to be either of them because the show never decides what they want to do with her. It would actually be pretty biting if she was like... an Elon Musk-like character - a rich shut-in who has actively damaging ideas of what would improve society that people believe purely out of hype - or if her resurrection of Garmadon was supposed to be his season 2 self, because he did far better for Ninjago than the rest of the team, and she was actually blinded by the fact the resurrection wouldn't work for lore reasons or whatever.
But the thing is, if you try to have both, you pretty much just have a brat. While that can also work - see Morro and Nadakhan - you have to then have their actions reflect more on your protagonists than their own sympathetic side, and also you have to make it clear that THEIR IDEAS ARE BAD AND THEY ARE BAD FOR DOING THEM. It also helps to not have so much of a focus on them versus your protagonists if they're not actively being fun - otherwise they just eat up screentime before getting killed at the end of the season.
On the flip side, if you truly want a sympathetic antagonist, you have to write them with a complexity on the same level as your protagonists. Ninjago has only had that luxury once, and the character that was with had five seasons to do so, and was carried by his voice actor and relationship to Lloyd. Harumi has half that time, half that charisma quadruple the crime list, and is put in a place where we have no reason to really want her to change for the better.
It still frustrates me to this day that people took Harumi (and by extension the trilogy) as good purely because of the presence of tropes that can be done well, but actually just rip the tone of the show in half. Admittedly a lot of us were teens entering our emo 'no longer a kid' phase but like, as someone who'd seen something similar going down in MLP at the time, it was terrible to see a lot of the fans falling for the lazy writing tricks that were being pulled here.
[...this post was actually supposed to lead onto how the OP of the annoying post misinterpreted Garmadon's changed character as good because they justified it in canon, but this has gotten long enough for now :/]

omg you are SOOOO right abt kai being the protector!! the way he acts protective over nya and then lloyd makes me soft. and i just had this great idea: imagine the scene i was talking abt earlier but its not just jay (like in canon) who protects him, its lloyd and nya. and they also put themselves in great danger, to save him and that frustrates him even further, to see that the exact people he tries to protect now put their lives on the line to protect him. and afterwards they would talk about it, maybe kai would snap at them a little, saying that they should be more careful and that if saving him puts them in so much danger, maybe they shouldnt have done it. (bc i feel like it is canonically hinted that he has some self-esteem issues that would only be furthered by his inability to protect himself) and then nya and lloyd of course say that theyre family, and they would never leave him behind, and that everyone should help and protect each other, that the burden of being a protector shouldnt fall on his shoulders alone. thats it for my kai rambling (which is fueled by the fact that my main oc is very similar to him and this kinda story would apply to both of them perfectly). i absolutely agree with on aspheera's voice acting tho! i really enjoyed it as well, and i also wish she was a bit more developed and sympathetical, to make her less 'pure evil' and more morally grey. for example: maybe king mambo was mistreating his people? maybe he was a corrupt ruler? maybe she planned to take over ninjago because she wanted to unite the serpentine and people, since its mentioned that the peace between them was a very fragile one. i mean if all it took was a kid wandering into their lands to eventually start a war, theres definite room for improvement. (im so sorry i typed so much!! i just think you have good opinions and would like to share my thoughts in their entirety)
aLRIGHTY!!! finally getting around to Actually answering these iuytfrcvghjiuytfrgyh sorry it took so long omg work and tired
"if saving him puts them in so much danger, maybe they shouldnt have done it" - I AM GOING TO CRY THIS SOUNDS EXACTLY LIKE SOMETHING HE WOULD SAY 😭😭😭
NO YES ALL OF THIS !!! frick i love kai SO MUCH and they SO underutilized him in the entirety of s11 😭
but no i agree with you--there wasn't like...a really believable aspheera and wu rivalry. they just. they just made aspheera about to be this villain for no reason and wu was just a lil guy who did nothing wr--okay that's not fair, kai did yell at wu which GOOD. but it still looks ridiculous because technically wu didn't Really do anything bad but aspheera just. decided to be evil for no reason and she had a whole different story than wu had and like. the whole "treacherous deceiver" thing would have been SO COOL if it was legit, you know? showing that wu made genuine and stupid mistakes as a child like how harumi's anger towards the ninja is so valid because like trauma and the ninja / lloyd have to deal with the fact that they messed up and didn't really see the damage that they left behind... would've been cool to see that with wu:/
oops that was a lot - sorry! i was upset about aspheera's backstory lol
[omg you think i have good opinions? gonna CRY! thank you ahhhhh! so do you!]

Aged-up pro hero Shouto. NSFW under the cut. Minors do not interact.
- - -
General
Might as well be tied with Bakugou for the #1 pro hero spot; they seem to pass the crown back and forth every other year. Everyone knows about their intense frenemies uber-rivalry. Well. Everyone but Shouto.
He's asked to speak at a lot of charity events. If he has time to prepare (and hire a speech writer) he is capable of stirring crowds to standing ovations. But if caught unawares... he gets cornered into hilarious on-the-spot interviews. He's been memed. Mercilessly.
He's an OP character, but unfortunately he rolled -500 in fashion sense. Eventually he wises up and hires a stylist. When he finally cuts his hair a slightly different and even more flattering way, it's a national event. People faint in the street.
Does god-awful sleight-of-hand magic tricks when he meets young fans, even though nobody asked him to. The second-hand embarrassment is palpable. But he keeps doing it. God, why does he keep doing it?
Has hovering arm syndrome in every fan photo.
Super into pop music. Not a fan of any particular group or artist, couldn't tell you the name of a single song. But every time he turns up the volume on the radio it's like... really? THIS? Probably pumps that shit through his hero agency to keep up morale. Has no idea what you mean when you tell him his music taste doesn't match his personality.
Similarly, he enjoys brainless romantic comedies and old silent movies. Doesn't laugh at jokes but loses it over physical comedy. Thinks Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd are the funniest people who ever walked the earth.
He's long and limber. Runs practically a hundred miles every day just to "relax." Doesn't even get sweaty doing it. A filthy yoga addict. He'll probably live to be 200 years old.
He can regulate his body temperature for quirk use but in everyday life he's always half a degree outside the Goldilocks zone. It drives him quietly insane; he has an epic love-hate relationship with his thermostat.
Has a therapy animal pet. Doesn't matter if it's a dog or a cat or a bird or an iguana or a teeny tiny rodent. It's the best-behaved animal in the country and speaks more languages than you. It has its own room and an instagram account with millions of followers.
Lives in a traditional Japanese estate that doubles as a national treasure. Probably has government-appointed snipers at the gate, and he's just like, "don't worry about it." You are afraid to touch anything. Fuck, don't even look at anything, just to be safe.
Has an outstanding personal chef who only gets to cook five things unless (thank fuck!!) company comes over. Impossibly picky eater. He rotates between a few "safe" foods and suspiciously side-eyes everything else. If you cook something unfamiliar for him it will be the most awkward meal of your life, because he'd never tell you he doesn't like it. But oh lord, just look at his face.
This clashes directly with his love of traveling. Frequently uses his hero earnings to visit exotic foreign locales over long weekends... but rarely tries the food.

Dating
A grey-ace demisexual disaster. You could count the number of people he's been attracted to on one hand. He falls madly in love every time and always gets his heart smashed to pieces when his crush can't magically intuit the meaning of his frigid longing glances and generically courteous romantic gestures.
Which is stupid, because he gets propositioned constantly. He can't walk out the door without being flirted with. People keep slipping him their phone numbers and he always directs them to his agency like a moron. It's a good thing he will never understand how attractive he is because that's the only thing keeping him from total world domination.
Conventional attractiveness does not compute. Shouto doesn't have a type, doesn't care that he's an eleven whilst you are merely mortal. He will fall for your personality above all else.
Probably falls head over heels because your schedules overlap in a completely ordinary way and he witnesses you doing something endearing or brave or most likely: utterly mundane.
Pick a favorite, because you're his favorite coworker, or his favorite barista, or his favorite random bystander in line at the grocery store. You made him smile once; then he spent the next three months daydreaming about your future together before you accidentally stomped on his foot, initiating your first real conversation.
He's big on healthy communication. HUGE. He goes to therapy and it shows. Will talk through literally everything to the point of delirium. Sometimes his dedication to resolving every issue right away can get overwhelming; sometimes you just need some frickin time alone. But it pays off, because the two of you have practically never have a "real fight." There's just no way for bad vibes to fester.
STILL, his family wasn't exactly... erm... verbally or emotionally supportive, shall we say. For that reason, he might not give you all the compliments you deserve, because it simply doesn't occur to him to do so. He assumes you know how he feels. If you're self-conscious or insecure in the relationship, it might take him a while to notice. But when he figures it out (or even better, when you tell him directly) he will make it up to you with enthusiasm.
Will take you on lavish dates. Spoils you rotten without actually intending to. He's clueless about money. If you wanted a sugar daddy, you just hit the fucking jackpot. But if the word valet makes you uncomfortable, perhaps suggest some romantic picnics instead. He can still go all out with the food and five-star location without making you see cartoon dollar signs.
Chronic Insomniac. Stays up too late watching YouTube every night. His viewing history is an incomprehensible blur of k-pop music videos, serial killer icebergs, and super girly crafty ASMR channels. When he's watching a video, he is unreachable. Please call back later and try again.
He's disgustingly cute when he sleeps. Doesn't snore, but drools. Sometimes the drool freezes and leaves frost trails on his face in the morning. Still sleeps with the giant stuffed cat pillow that his mother gave him when he was like, zero. He'll inadvertently suffocate you with it, and you will welcome death with open arms because awwwwww!!!!!
The first time he tells you he loves you will be after your traditional Japanese shinto wedding. You won't hear it again until you start a family. Honestly, it's a good thing he doesn't say it often and is always holding you when it happens. It's a knee-buckler.
- - -
Icy-Hot
I don't even need to say it. Shouto is as old-fashioned as they come. You will never open another door or pull out another chair for yourself as long as you live. He will ask before he holds your hand. He will ask before he kisses you. He will stop and check in if you so much as breathe funny during sex.
If you don't orgasm at exactly the same time while staring into one another's eyes, he'll consider himself a failed lover. God forbid you want him to pound you into the futon... cause you are going to have to present that scenario to him in writing first.
Physical intimacy rarely leads to sex. He loves cuddling, craves physical affection. He'll sprawl all over you and turn into goo while you hold him close. He's an amazing, astounding, phenomenally good kisser. And that's... nice and all... but sometimes you have to grab his face and say, "Shouto, I'm horny," before he's like so that's why you're currently dry-humping me?
Even if he isn't technically a virgin the first time (or the millionth time) you sleep together, you won't know the difference. He's a blushing violet. Every. Fucking. Time. This doesn't mean he's a bad lay, oh no. But there's always ten minutes of confused bumbling before he hits his stride and remembers oh yeah, I DO know how to fuck good.
Absolutely silent during sex. Focused. Intense. Sometimes you have to push him a little to make any kind of noise at all, just so you know you're pleasing him (oh don't worry, you are).
His cock is Just Right. Not to big or too small. Perfectly proportioned and symmetrical. Somehow pretty. Like a fucking factory prototype. It truly is not fair.
Gets handsy and restless at night, even if you both have work the next day. Seems to crave sex at three in the morning. You've given him more than one exhausted handjob.
Gets offended if you don't cum. Will go down on you for hours. Of course he uses his quirk to tease you. He doesn't typically use it during actual intercourse, but he's all about foreplay, and he'll use every tool in his arsenal.
His sex drive is completely fucking unpredictable. Sometimes he's all over you, other times he's an icy slab. His line of work leaves him busy and stressed on a near-constant basis, so you can't entirely blame his personality for this one. Just give him some time and help him take care of his basic needs. He'll come back around soon enough.

From what I can tell the reason why so many people in the fandom latched onto Ronin is bc he easily would have fit into the wildly popular trope of 'gruff morally grey selfish world wise loner who only wants money has the walls around his heart worn down by getting roped into the shenanigans of a magical child with parent issues and realizes too late that he now cares about said children more than he has about anything since his tragic backstory happened', but the writers for whatever reason didn't commit to that trope fully, leaving Ronin in a weird limbo between 'enemy turned trusted ally and pseudo-parental figure with some morally dubious habits played for laughs' (helping the Ninja to his own detriment even after his betrayal in S5, teaming up with Jay and the others to fight Nadakhan in the final fight of S6(if you count S6 at all which I personally don't since it was all erased), being trusted enough to help the team move into their new base and dragging Nya out of a fight she couldn't win instead of leaving her to save himself in S7, all of his involvement in the Wu's Teas shorts which are totally cannon and Tommy can fight me over that) and 'mid-level scumbag the main characters deal with when the world isn't about to end' (literally hunting the ninja and hacking Zane in a horror movie worth scene in S6 (again, if you count S6 as relevant to anything after it), his whole thing in S14 and the out of nowhere animosity Lloyd and the rest of the team had for him despite his last appearance being him getting injured to help them fight the Vermilion (not saying he didn't do anything to earn that animosity in between appearances, but to my knowledge his only other appearance was getting caught by the SoG in S9. I haven't seen all of S12 or S13 tho, so I could have easily missed something).
Another huge contributing factor in much of his fandom love was that the 'magical child with parent issues' he seemed to be connecting with was Nya right when it was revealed that she had powers all along and was basically neglected by all the adults in her life who knew and could have told her, which felt like even more of a kick in the teeth since the entire reason she became Samurai X was bc she felt left behind by the guys and useless stuck on the Bounty not being a real member of the team. Combine that with Wu's kind of cryptic and indirect way of teaching her with the bucket thing not being a very good way of teaching the typically straightforward Nya, and Ronin coming in and being able to help her progress with her powers more quickly really seemed to lean into Ronin fitting into the 'unintentional and massively under-qualified but mostly well meaning father figure/crime uncle' trope (just want to make it clear that I'm not trying to say Ronin is a better teacher than Wu in any way, just that Nya seemed to figure things out better with being directly told to look at things a different way than with the bucket thing which I don't think will ever not bug me)
And, in a way, Ronin in S14 was both in character and out of character, since him being an ally or the villain of the day seems to be decided by a coin flip. It's like Schrodinger's characterization.
But yeah, tl;dr all of the appeal of Ronin as a character is that he had the potential to fit into a popular trope, the fandom took that and ran with it, and then for whatever reason the writers didn't commit to that trope but by that point he had been firmly cemented in the minds of many fans as 'crime uncle'. But that's just what I think happened
That makes sense, I s'pose. I'm not gonna be mad at people for liking him, he's just a fictional character, but I just.... can't bring myself to. I do appreciate that he has helped out, of course. That was very good of him (and yes, I do count Skybound as relevant. Even if the events got erased, they still acted how they would have, if that makes sense?). But I'm not usually a fan of morally grey characters, with a few exceptions (Morro and the main Sky Pirates other than Nadakhan, I don't know if Glutinous counts) I generally love the good guys. And I just... I can't get past the thing with how he was gonna take the sword, and ESPECIALLY not that freaking scene with Zane. That was horrifying to watch, and had it happened anywhere other than Skybound, I wouldn't blame Zane if he never trusted Ronin again. And then there's the part where he may have brought Zane and Pixal to Chen.... (I know that's not canon, it's from Shadow of Ronin, but...... Zane... my boy...)
It's interesting to see how he might play into a story, but that's about it for me, personally.

The Story Behind Solas with Dragon Age Lead Writer Patrick Weekes - Dialogue Wheel (Part 3 of 3)
The final piece of the interview!
Here is Part 1, Part 2
Time: 25:35
One of the most beautiful scenes I think in Dragon Age Inquisition is the scene that you get with Solas if you play as a female elf Inquisitor. Talk a little bit about that choice to have this romance option very, very specific. It’s race- and gender- specific. Why that scene - what that scene meant and a lot of the subtext, because it is a very rich sequence of scenes, not just one. And, I think it’s really one of the most interesting romances in the game.
I love that scene because that scene for me shows how far we’ve gone past - not the make myself irrelevant anymore - but how far we’ve gone with the digital acting. Jonathan Epp the cine-designer for that scene put it together and when you take everything that Gareth David Lloyd - the voice actor - everything he did on his lines. And just putting so much tragedy, and making it clear in every line that he wants to say more than he can. And with Jon Epp the cine-designer, just in the wordless scenes: showing the tragedy, showing the heartbreak, showing how much he does genuinely care against his better judgement, and how he finally forces himself to step away.,
You know how I said when we were talking about the Iron Bull - everything, every major moment we do, is there for a specific type of player fantasy fulfillment. And you know, not all types of fantasies are the happy ones. There’s a reason why The Phantom of the Opera was on Broadway for so many years and it’s not because it has a happy ending.
The Phantom of the Opera isn’t exactly the theme for the romance -  the razor was something closer to almost professor and student in some ways. He definitely comes across as a mentor in some ways. When he finally steps back it is him beating himself up, not you, saying “Wow what I have done here is actually really unfair to you, and you, player, at the time don’t know that I’m beating myself up because I’m actually  1000s of years old and not the person you think I am and it’s disrespectful to you for me to continue this relationship.” So it’s a very moral perspective for our ancient, quasi-evil, trickster god to come with.
Time: 28:41
And it’s amazing because it’s another instance of content that so few players would actually get an opportunity to see. When it comes to making it that specific, I guess, why was that choice made? Because usually a lot of your content - most of the Dragon Age content - it’s very easy to get really rich, wonderful characters right in your face and have those wonderful “eat-em-up” experiences, why for this one was it such a steep price to get in?
You know, I won’t lie, a lot of it came from some of our designers. Some of the women in the design department really, really loving his voice and saying, “You are absolutely fools if you do not make him romance-able in some capacity.” And, really, his story overall is - and, you know, I think we’ve only hinted at that but I think we have hinted at it enough that I can at least say this part of it - his story isn’t a happy one. His story is one, where, if you look at him and Mythal, there is clearly some grief, there is clearly some tragedy. And, adding in the option - even for players who don’t take it - on my end as a writer,  knowing that some players will have this as a star-crossed, forbidden romance, you know, it makes him more sympathetic. It’s important to me as a writer because when you’re writing about someone who, according to Flemeth, is at least somewhat responsible for the bad guy getting the magical item that he used to blow up half a mountain in the prologue, it’s important to have something in there that you can always have, as a writer, look at as your touchstone and go “This is a real person. This is someone who experiences sadness. This is someone who falls in love.” Even if he doesn’t do it with that Inquisitor on that playthrough, this is always someone who can be like that.
Time: 30:58
Where do you see a character like Solas ending up?
(Big sigh) Musical theater.
(laughs) Right when we reach those beautiful moments, Patrick!
I think that it is fantastic that people have emotionally engaged with Solas and I hope we get a chance to explore that in some future content.
Alright and that’s the most that we’re getting right now.
Time: 31:37
Oh, and here’s a little tie in: Here Lies the Abyss, the demon that spoke to Solas - what was all that about, what was that going on?
Oh yes - the demon who speaks perfect Elven!
Yes perfectly to him, and if you remember any of that - did you have anything to do with that?
Yes, Here Lies the Abyss was mine. It was a fun plot. It was a terrifyingly difficult plot, because - I’m not sure how clear this is to players that have one done one playthrough or with one import state - but your key characters throughout the events at Adamant Fortress and then the events of the Fade, it’s a customizable Hawke. Which means it could be a male Hawke or a female Hawke and within that, Hawke from Dragon Age 2 is characterized by one of three different attitudes: friendly, grim, or sarcastic. So, that’s three attitudes times two genders, that’s six different Hawkes and three different possible Grey Wardens: Alistair, Loghain, or Stroud.  So, the process of going through Adamant Fortress and then going through the Fade was a crazy juggling act of trying to keep track of “Okay, now one of these five people, these five Schrodinger’s cat quantum people, will say this line, and then another of these five Schrodinger’s cat quantum people will respond with this line.”
It’s important to remember that as we went through everything in Adamant Fortress and the Fade was taking place in that contest. There was a long period time when we were looking at that really going, “Okay, I just have to hope this actually makes sense when it’s nothing but Alistair and my sarcastic female Hawke.”
But, to actually answer your question. As I recall, the Nightmare, who as a friendly, chipper guy was basically - I do basically two types of villains: I do the villain who thinks he or she is the hero, and is misguided and has opposed goals, and is kind of tragic and tortured in that way. And then I do the mean-girl villain who says snotty high school insults.
That’s it - that’s the gambit.
Well, just about, yes. I’m looking forward to see who writes the villain in the future Dragon Age games - so get ready for either tragic pathos or really, really good high school mean-girl zingers.
As I recall, he was speaking Elven to Solas and if I remember right, he said, “Your pride is responsible for everything that has gone wrong” and I think he said “You will die alone.” And then Solas said something that translates to either “Nothing is known for certain” or “Not necessarily.”
And what does all that mean?
Well I think it’s fascinating that people are emotionally engaged, and I hope we have the chance -
It was a very asked question - it was a question that was asked a lot. Specific to that.
Oh, I’m not surprised, and I hope one day that we can tell you. But, obviously, that demon knows that Solas is hurting and Solas feels guilty about some stuff and really wanted to dig in there, and Solas was shouting back.
Literally just describing what happened (laughs). All right, so something that will clearly be talked about in other games.
TIme: 36:22
Dealing with this particular quest I really think that this was one opportunity to involve the Grey Wardens in a story, and a world, that kind of progressingly, after the first game had less and less of a need to exist - let alone in the world - but in the main characters arc. Talking to David I remember initially there was some idea for this particular mission they would just fall into the hole and be hanging out in the Deep Roads, and having out with the dwarves, so tell us a little bit about this creation.
A lot of the process of writing these large plots, like I talked about the razor, you figure out what the core concept is, you always start with a lot of things, and in most cases what you then end up having to do is cut. And if you’re not someone in the studio, talking about having to cut things sounds like you’re losing awesome content, you’re ruining what would have been clearly the best part of the plot. Inside the studio though, most cases what you’re cutting is the stuff that didn’t actually help tell the story you wanted to tell.
So yes in the original version, in a very early draft, actually this was before I was actually on the plot - this predates me - there was, yes, going into the Deep Roads, and when you fell in instead of ending up in the Fade you ended up down in the dark. And finding out what the Grey Wardens in this version of the story had been involved with the Architect from Dragon Age: Awakening. It was an interesting direction, and it was, I think, a very cool direction, but it did not help tell the story of the Inquisition. It was more a story of “Hey, if we wanted to do more with the Hero of Fereldan, here is an interesting place we could go” and it did not help tell the story of “What is the Inquisition doing?” “What is Corypheus doing?”, “How do these two organizations bounce off each other and who’s caught in the middle?” So trying to come to terms with the Grey Wardens in this game not being the protagonists, not being the group that is in the center of the action but being the group that is caught in the middle of this power struggle was something that led to us having to eventually do the re-jiggering that got us to the plot you saw.

The Commons S1
All right, it’s past high time I talk about this show.
All my reasons for watching it started with David and ended with Lyons, but I found a few others along the way.
David plays Lloyd, a biologist/virologist (?, IDK his profession was never explicitly stated) who is trying to find a cure for Chagas disease with the help of his BFF. Chagas disease is a tropical parasitic disease that actually exist, but the show made it more dangerous/deadly, I guess, with the emphasis on its spreading from the tropics farther over the world.
That’s one of the elements that are supposedly sci-fi (and the show is marketed as such), along with highly progressed climate change resulting in displaced people from submerged islands, etc. etc.
However, I say supposedly, because all these things aren’t really some high sci-fi? Sure, the show exaggerated them a little, but we’re already experiencing effects of climate change from the extreme weather phenomena, spreading tropical diseases (Zika, the West Nile virus), and climate refugees with resulting immigration issues/policies.
Hence, it felt rather eerie and disturbing watching the show, especially at the time I did, when the Australian fires were at their peak.
The actual sci-fi elements are in the medical sphere (but not really far-fetched, with all the apps that we can already use to monitor some of our bodily functions), but I am not telling you exactly what they are to not spoil it for you.
A warning though: one of the major sup-plots in the show is Lloyd’s wife struggling with fertility; just so you know if that’s a sensitive topic for you.
Personally, I think having a child is not end-all for a woman (or a man), but I also understand that for some people it is and I think the show did this sub-plot rather well and presented different views in a rather balanced manner.
So, what I really liked was how they portrayed the relationships in a more balanced and healthy way than the usual American melodrama, showing good and bad times and, most importantly, problem solving.
There was also a good example of a teenager portrayal, showing how teens deal with the current social/climate and other issues besides their own/family issues, but again in a balanced way.
Lloyd’s BFF, Shay is also an interesting character and towards the end I found I could easily squish him in there into an OT3, because why not. ;)
Rupert Penry-Jones is in the show, too. His character is rather morally grey, but I liked him.
If you’re a fan, beware, though: SPOILER! His character ends season in a highly precarious situation that they can (if there is s2) write in either him dying or not, it’s really 50/50 – it’s fiction, so they can definitely find a way to save him, but if RPJ is otherwise engaged or they don’t want to, they can also just write him off as dead. So, be warned.
But, if there is S2, I hope they keep him alive, because it would be interesting to watch him deal with the repercussions of what he did as well as of what happened to him – there was an event that basically left him with PTSD and they did a good job showing how ti affected him, but it hasn’t been resolved, so I’d like to see how that unravels further. END OF SPOILER.
One of his kids is autistic, which IMO was also done rather well.
David’s character is also in a precarious situation at the end of the season, but far from that of RPJ’s – but definitely a cliffhanger/plot element I’d like to see continued.
So, yeah, the season ends on one huge cliffhanger and one lesser and definitely calls for another season. I hope it got enough interest in Australia (or abroad if they will shop it around, because I’d definitely watch more.
Pretty please?
Personal preferences aside (because I’d watch – and have done so – David in anything), it was a good show. I binged in 4-5 days and still remember so many details more than a month later, and that should tell you something.
Okay, enough rambling.
If you can, go watch it. If you can do it so that it counts for ratings, even better.
David’s face and acting skills alone are worth it, and then there is also everything else.

Shades of grey (from left): Tom Hiddleston, Charlie Cox and Zawe Ashton in Betrayal
Why people buy high-performance cars just to sit in traffic jams will always defeat me. When do they get to put their foot down and really test the manufacturers’ specifications?
The same is true for Tom Hiddleston in his impressive return to the West End stage in Harold Pinter’s 1978 play.
Hiddleston is a Lamborghini of an actor with shapely body work, a purring engine and, no doubt, a very plush interior. But I wasn’t sure we got to see his full range in Pinter’s story of a doomed love triangle told backwards.
Pinter was not the most flamboyant of dramatic writers. his dry, guarded characters are as famous for their silences as their cagey dialogue.
What’s more, here we find Hiddleston playing a high-status stooge who discovers his wife has, for years, been having an affair with his best friend in a flat in Kilburn. Luckily, an actor’s greatness can also be measured by their ability to attract interest while parked at the kerb.
Tall, handsome Tom does that: ginger locks swept back to clear a path for his blue- eyed stare. hands shoved deep into pockets, Hiddleston spends long periods of the play contemplating the middle distance. There is some eyebrow action a la Roger Moore. A scattering of smiles suggests sad inner life. And there’s a heart- stopping moment of silent tears when he discovers his wife’s affair. But the actor never gets to let rip.
His oaky voice snaps only occasionally under tension, and we get strangulated barks that sound like Nobel Laureate Pinter himself. Hiddleston is at his most animated when stabbing a fork into a piece of melon while confronting his friend over a boozy lunch. Never less than very watchable, that is star quality.
ZAWE ASHTON is fascinating as Emma. she is a lithe, wriggling, flirtatious enigma torn between two men who give off little more than pheromones.
Charlie Cox is an enormously sympathetic actor but here, as her lover, he is just as warily understated as Hiddleston.
The play is now well into middle age. The liquid lunch involving two bottles of Corvo may be a matter of nostalgia but, when Hiddleston’s Robert blithely admits to domestic violence, it’s a grim reminder that this was an era when it was possible to say such things without censure.
Even so, Jamie Lloyd’s taut production seeks to make the action seem hip, with Soutra Gilmour’s spartan set made up of a white floor and three walls of pinkish-granite.
Pinter describes a rarified world, charting the small agonies of the seventies metropolitan bubble. It’s also a semi-autobiographical account of his seven-year affair with journalist and broadcaster Joan Bakewell in the sixties.
The trouble is that his characters exist in a virtual moral vacuum where marriage is a matter of convenience. having a child walk on towards the end helps raise the stakes, and Ben and Max Ringham’s dreamy sound design softens the edges.
But, for all such tweaks, the play remains an emotional car park full of shiny limos.
A VERSION of this review appeared in yesterday’s paper.
Betrayal (Harold Pinter Theatre) Verdict: Fine actors flatter stilted play
Thanks for sending this updated version of Patrick Marmion’s review!

End of Year Writing: M T W
Thank you for asking!!!
M. Meta! Have any meta about a story you’re dying to throw out there?
Oh man, oh man, I’m gonna throw this under a cut after the rest of the questions, because it’s long. But tldr: the more I play of Tales of the Abyss, the more I realize that “Ida” from Perigee (and by extension Anna in both Perigee and Equilibrium) is a replica. And the point at which both the characters and the narrative recognize the replica as the original Anna is debatable and kinda... weird to think about, actually. Keep reading at the end for that.
T. Themes, motherfucker, do you have them? What are they?
I wasn’t sure whether I did or not, but looking at the character motivations in all the stories I’ve worked on this year, there is a common thread, I think...
Equlibrium: Lloyd wants to embrace the Dwarven side of his family, but has trouble given his father’s (Dirk’s) past experiences with losing his previous families and what they represented to him. Colette and Zelos butt heads with Yuan over what family means to Adora and whether her blood family is really the family she needs- Colette and Zelos having had extremely different experiences with their own families in the past, which colors their opinions. Kratos and Anna are in conflict over their own future and the prospect of rebuilding a family that, at one time, they both considered lost. Sheena wants to pursue her relationship with Lloyd and the rest of the outside world without giving up her Mizuho family as well. Genis and Raine, when they find themselves struggling in their romantic relationships, realize how strongly they rely on their family for support.
Stare Decisis: The main focus of the story is on Zelgadis rediscovering the family he thought he’d lost, and in his parents and brother doing the same. There’s also Gourry, still struggling with the loss of his brother, learning to accept help from his current family (Lina and his friends), and Lina accepting her role in offering that help. Pokota wants to help Adelaide leave the destructive legacy of her family behind so that she can be accepted by the people of Taforashia.
Fugitive Guardian: Syaoran is struggling with the pressures placed on him by his family and their legacy, and through his love with Sakura and his friendship with the other characters, he is finding a way to express himself on his own terms. His interactions with Stephen lead him to reflect on his family’s past, and are building to a realization of the complicated nature of his family’s relationships at which point Syaoran will have to decide how he wants to approach his role as the future head of the family.
W.  Who are your favorite writers?
It’s hard to say specifics, because I get a lot of my media in the form of comics and television shows. But I suppose that’s enough to give at least some writers- I’m extremely impressed by the writing in Satoru Noda’s Golden Kamuy (I’m not totally caught up with the manga yet; oops) in the way that it develops such a large cast and doesn’t have any real “good guys” and “bad guys,” instead leaves you to root for the protagonists while their companions and enemies both support and betray them. Grey morality is something I like in both what I read and what I write. On the total other end of the media spectrum, I’m really impressed by Terri Minsky and the rest of the writing team of the show Andi Mack. I love-love-love the characters and relationships they’ve set up, and the way they lovingly depict such a diverse cast. Andi Mack is the first show I’ve ever seen that depicts a character with Panic Disorder (or, at least, who experiences true panic attacks), and not only are the scenes extremely accurate- at least in my own experience as someone with that disorder- but they are treated respectfully and with such skill that they don’t ever strike me as a piece of media just trying to have a “token mentally ill character.” I want to be able to depict diverse characters in my stories in ways that will make people happy the way Andi Mack has made me happy.
As far as published books I’ve recently read, Haunted Ground by Erin Hart and We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson were both VERY GOOD. Highly recommend.
OKAY, META.
Ignoring the major “scientific/magical” differences between Symphonia and Abyss’ worlds and assuming that we can equate mana-exsphere interactions with fomicry, “Ida” from Perigee could absolutely be considered a replica by Abyss’ standards. She’s a perfect genetic copy of Anna, but lacks the memories and is like a young child in her mentality. The difference, however, is that she is connected to Anna’s soul via the angelus exsphere, and the soul of the original Anna is slowly transferring into the replica body. That means her personality traits are coming from the original, and she can’t necessarily be considered an individual completely separate from her original- nor does she want to. “Ida’s” whole story involves searching for her “true identity,” and when she finds out that she’s a replica merely sapping Anna’s soul, she insists that it’s “just like I’m Anna- no, I am Anna!” In her internal monologue, as given by the text, she refers to Anna’s soul as her own, thereby asserting herself as the original.
Lloyd is the first of the other characters to acknowledge her as the original (he calls her “mom” in chapter 18 and insists to Kratos that his mother is “RIGHT THERE!”) But the narration in the story doesn’t actually refer to her as Anna until chapter 20, when Kratos- for all intents and purposes- asks permission to treat her as the original and she states that she wants him to see her as the original as well. From that point on, all the characters (perhaps with the exception of Yuan) treat her as the original, but it could be said that she doesn’t truly “become” Anna until the final chapter, when the angelus exsphere is shattered and her soul fully inhabits the replica body, fully restoring her memories.
DESPITE THIS, she acknowledges the original’s death when she demands to have a “second” wedding with Kratos, indicating that she doesn’t quite see herself as the same Anna as the original Anna. In Equilibrium, Yuan expresses surprise at Anna’s pregnancy because he assumed that her “replica” body wasn’t quite the same as a real human body. This brings up a really weird question about the child’s familial relations. Biologically and genetically speaking, the kid would be Lloyd’s full brother. But in a practical sense, would he be considered more to be Lloyd’s half-brother? Or, because Anna’s body perfectly replicated the original Anna who had given birth to Lloyd, could we practically say that the two are full brothers even though “this” Anna was not the Anna who actually gave birth to Lloyd?
My head hurts now; I should probably stop. Why can’t I find an easier way to bring characters back from the dead?

Okay so, I haven’t analysed any posters in around about a year. In fact, the last poster I did analyse was one for the Ninjago Movie around June or July last year? I’ve been thinking recently about some of the stuff I’d said when I’d first analysed the poster, and I thought since we all actually know what happens within the movie now, I could get more out of my previous analysis and the poster. So I’ve gone back and analysed it all over again. I repeated a few points from the original analysation but I’ve also been able to add some more things in there!
I’ve been meaning to do this for a few months, however recently I’ve been really missing Media studies, and I want to do more poster analysations over the course of Summer. So I did this today in order to get back into analysing, since I haven’t really examined anything other than my own coursework (which isn’t really all that fun if I’m honest)
Tumblr media
Green = nature = Lloyd is Green Ninja (Ninja of Life) = green/nature/life often associated with “growth” = implies growth happens within film, also implies Lloyd is the cause of that growth (as he is the Ninja of Life).
Green = nature = nature associated with “peace” = ninja fight for peace. Also links in with idea of finding balance between light and dark (like Yin and Yang, which links in with the cultures portrayed within film)
Bamboo = One of the places used within film = could be considered a significant part as it marks the point where Lloyd is forced to work with his father, which helps lead on to the ending of the movie.
Bamboo = climbing up away from darkness and toward the light = have to work towards the light = Master Wu briefly talks about them being “true ninja”, implying that because of their mechs it hinders them from becoming these true ninjas that Wu tells them they need to be, so when Garmadon attacks and Ninjago City falls (ruled by the “darkness”), the ninja have to go to the jungle and become the true ninja that Wu wants them to become. In doing so they are also saving Ninjago City from the “darkness”, so therefore, are working towards light again.
Sun shining through bamboo = Ninja climbing towards it = connotes they are working for the good side. Also suggests to audience how film could end peacefully, since they are heading towards light and away from darkness. Light only coming through gaps = implies the goal they are headed towards won’t be easy to get to.
Tagline = “find the ninja within ya” = Rhymes = stick’s better in the T/A’s head. Tagline is also addressing the audience = invites audience to join the story/become ninja alongside the protagonists = could also imply part of the movie’s message is finding the motivation or “fight” within you, making you try your best and excel in the things you love and are passionate about.
Tagline is also the same colour as Lloyd’s colour scheme/overall colour scheme of the poster. Connotes Lloyd is finding his inner ninja/you are finding your own power alongside him. Can link to the idea of Lloyd not having elemental powers whilst his friends do, meaning he had to find his own power within himself, much like the audience might do (as they do not have elementals either)
“The LEGO” = small, white font. “LEGO” is in capital letters, much like how the logo of the company is. Also capitalized as LEGO is a well known, worldwide brand that is recognised by many people. Fans of LEGO see it is a LEGO movie and become interested in seeing film. Typeface in white = white connotes innocence = innocence is associated with children = child friendly movie = appeals to parents of children also.
“NINJAGO” = large, red font. Biggest word on the poster = stands out the most. Use of accent colour (red) also makes it stand out more. Located in centre of poster = first thing T/A sees. Ninjago fans see title = attracts their attention.
Red = connotes war = war going on between Lloyd and Garmadon (Good vs Bad/Light vs Dark), or possibly the war being put aside between those two so they can both fight Meowthra.
Red = connotes adventure = implies to audience that the film is full of action/adventure.
Red = connotes aggression/anger = could link to Lloyd’s anger towards his father, maybe also Ninjago’s anger towards Garmadon/Lloyd (cos destruction and all that). Possibly even anger Garmadon feels about not changing and letting Koko take his son away.
Red = connotes love = links to Lloyd and Garmadon putting their differences aside and bonding with each other, resulting the film’s ending. Garmadon loving his son and Lloyd learning to love his dad despite it all.
Lloyd: Looking directly at audience (D.M.O.A) and holding out hand to you = inviting you to come on the journey with the characters = friendly personality. Smiling = suggests character is happy however this is different to how he is portrayed in the film, as we know he tends to fake a smile in front of others. Green = associated with “Go” = implies he takes action within the film and steps up as a leader. Blonde hair = can be associated with characters with good morals as yellow is a bright colour that is linked to happiness and joy, which is what Lloyd brings when he is saving Ninjago from Garmadon. However, yellow also can connote dishonesty, betrayal and jealousy = these could link in with moments in the film where Lloyd went behind the ninja’s back to use the Ultimate Weapon on Garmadon, and also later on in the jungle when the other ninja are listening to his father and ignoring him. Green eyes = connotes he is protagonist to the audience as it is a characteristic only he has (aside from Garmadon, who is the antagonist). Only character without a mask on = further connotes to audience he is main focus of the film. Biggest anchor image on the poster = another implication to the audience he is the protagonist.
Jay: Looking off to the side in fear = anxious/nervous personality = cautious with his actions. Gesture code = hugging the bamboo = connotes further he is a nervous person = needs comforting. Blue is associated with confidence = expression suggests he is the opposite of confident = creates irony. However, blue could also suggest that by the end of the movie he gains more confidence in himself, which leads to him unlocking his powers. Blue can also be linked to technology = Jay is a very technical person = intelligent. Colour is often associated with water too = crush on Nya. Weapon = flail = lone range weapon = suggests he prefers to fight from afar rather than up close = links to his cautious and nervous personality = also implies he as a person prefers to stay far away from a situation if he can = doesn’t enjoy fighting = dislikes violence/lacks enough confidence to stand up/fight for himself
Zane: D.M.O.A = Illuminative blue eyes = intimidating = scary in combat. Eyes also imply to audience he is a robot. White connotes innocence = naive one of the group. White = protection = made to protect those who cannot protect themselves (hah). White = precision = implies further he is a robot. Colour = simplicity = could link in with stereotypical behaviour of a robot following simple instructions/possibly links to his want to be more human as he follows a basic set of rules/instructions he thinks will make him appear more human to his peers. White also associated with winter = elemental power is ice. Aiming bow and arrow with legs rather than arms = skilled/powerful = links back to implication of him being scary in combat.
Cole: Black = connotes mystery/anonymity = quiet character/doesn’t have a lot to say/likes to keep to himself. Black also connotes unhappiness = may be why he is quiet/blocks out world with music. Colour also suggests death = his possible unhappiness may link in with loss of parent = explains why he blocks out the world with music. Only gi without sleeves = implies strength = elemental is earth/strong enough to cause earthquakes/move the earth. Arched eyebrows = confident personality. Weapon = Hammer = can cause a lot of damage = links to his elemental.
Kai: Red = love/passion = cares about his friends = encouraging and friendly personality which is mostly evident when around Lloyd or Nya (shown when Nya is attacked by Garmadon and Kai steps in, or at the start of the movie where Kai shows excitement around Lloyd upon seeing him arrive at school). Also cares about Ninjago City = protective/willing to risk his life. Red also connotes anger/frustration = implies he is hot-headed/easy to anger = does more things on impulse instead of thinking things through. Angry expression further connotes this to audience. Weapon : two katanas = further implies he acts on impulse. Prefers close combat instead of ranged attacks = likes to be in on the action = likes taking action/gets an adrenaline rush.
Nya: Black/Grey = connotes power = powerful character in combat. White streak on uniform = binary opposites = suggests different personalities depending on what situation she is in/who she is in front of (friends or enemies). Angry expression similar to her brother’s = similar personalities = suggests they have a lot in common = get along well/look out for each other. Weapon is a spear = suggest she has great aim/accuracy, may also suggest she has graceful/elegant fighting style in battle. D.M.O.A = invites girls to join the movie as well = widens T/A (no gender specific audience)
gosh I’m so tired good night guys

A collage of some of the leading ladies in a few of my stories Ive drawn throughout the years. From left to right, earliest to newest:
- Ladio, a husky/shepherd mix, who is apprenticing under her adopted mother to be a field medic and eventually accrues an internship at a neighboring country’s military base. She is friends with Shadow Fox. She is one of the few husky anthros that lives in her community, and a rarity as one who is also of mixed heritage. Although she is still a teenager and she is still figuring out what she wants out of life, she enjoys her studies and hopes that one day it will lead her to finding out who her birth parents were and if the fabled Deep Six City, a community comprised solely of huskies, actually exists.
(Notes: Notably the first anthro I’ve made. She’s kind of flip-flopped between being influenced from Star Fox Adventures, Sonic, and - even I’m shocked when I look back on it - Dragon Ball Z (to be fair, it was one of my first anime, back in the day. But since Ladio’s universe is a hot pot of anthros, reptilians, humans, robots and cyborgs, fairies, and aliens and all manner of creatures, I shouldn’t be so surprised.)
- Jinkei Haotome, a high school student who can wield phoenix fire in an urban fantasy world that leans hard into the concept of Guardians of the Four Directions from Asian mythology. Her favorite subject is mathematical topology. Is not Japanese; it’s just a cool name I came up with in middle school, so it’s stuck with her ever since.
(Notes: She’s pretty much a more hot-blooded, foul-mouthed Kusanagi Kyo from King of Fighters but she takes her academic studies more seriously...somewhat. AFAIK I never made a K’ or Iori expy to compliment her; a shame, really. She did start out as a KoF/SNK OC mentoring under the Sakazaki Team, though.)
- Rita Lusaloff, a girl trained in the swordsmanship and born with a left-handed astrolabe, a rare birthright that is only found in left-handed people that are able to use all magical elements. When she was nine her parents gave her up to be fostered by an elf to be cared for and trained in astral arts due to prejudice to those that bear the mark of the astrolabe.
(Notes: She has some heavy Tales of series influence, mainly Abyss...but between her and Luke, she’s much more grounded and is her age (19). There is also some Code Geass inspiration, but I don’t see Rita as someone who would ever be as morally grey as Lelouch is. If I had to describe what Rita’s personality is most like among the Tales of protagonists, I would say Lloyd - but with more education, but both share the same level of idealism.)
- Maaya Lawson (biologically born Maaya Endomere), the leading military commander, or Lord-General, in the country she trained and served - but not of her own will; prior to this, she was a law enforcement officer. She is the youngest person to hold the title, with the misfortune - or, as some would say, good fortune - of being the first human lycan to sit in office; because of ongoing hostilities between humans and non-humans, she is regarded with hostility by most of the public and as a result has only very few friends. She loves wolfdogs and has a pack that is bred for psychic attunement, all of whom serve as emotional support and jogging partners. The white-blue portion of her hair and sharp blue eyes indicates her lycanthropic nature.
(Notes: She surprisingly has origins rooted in Shakespearean tragedy, of all things, but I wanted to try my own take on the tried-and-true anime harems but with an absolutely gay as fuck, romantic as fuck, and eventually down to fuck protagonist who’s buff as fuck and surrounded by hot as fuck women, so I ditched the Shakespeare concept because yuri is better.)
-  Airi Lacard (transliterated surname), a young woman who lives alongside wind elementals in her region who take on the form of bald eagles. She has an interest in demonology, cultural history, and theatrical arts. Her destiny is somehow tied to that of the Demon King, Lord Tel Ossei Al-Sharaad, even though he is regarded as a being that is not real and only exists in fiction. As a member born into the animistic culture of the Houses of the Wylde, everyone is given both a true name and a use-name. However, ‘Airi’ is usually reserved as a true-name, and only for those women in positions of power. Airi was born with this name and she would later accept it as her use-name, so technically it is both her true-name and use-name; however, it is said she has a true-name she gave herself, but no one knows what it is, much to the chagrin of her elders, clanmates, and even siblings. For all her love and fondness of birds, she has a wary distrust of great horned owls, the bald eagle’s greatest rival.
(Notes: Airi’s origins have an interesting development. She started out as an Eleanor Hume expy for a Tales of Berseria/Zestiria fanfic that never took off, described as someone who was a ‘hero who would eventually be forgotten by history and known only in folklore’. Then she became her own person but her story was going to be my attempt at a children’s tale...until I made the stunning realization that I needed Airi to suffer immensely, preferably with existential angst, in order to grow, so that idea got quickly nixed. Then the previous iteration ended up making her either die and have paradise eternal throughout all realities, become forgotten by time again or a much happier Highlander expy who would evoke the Ascended To A Higher Plane of Existence, and I hated all of those for depressing me even if the four of the six endings I wrote for her were mostly bittersweet. Thus began my journey to give Airi a much better, fulfilling outcome, which began with watching bald eagle cams back in 2019, which is where I got the idea of attributing them to her. At the same time, I was obsessively putting the entirety of Kikuchi Momoko’s discography on repeat as I dabbled with the worldbuilding in notebooks, so Airi has quite a distinct mid-1980′s to early 1990′s feel that emulates the women of that time period: elegant and mature and kind with a hint of mischievous mirth lurking underneath. Magic Knight Rayearth should also be thanked for inspiration regarding the development of Airi’s family, which is where the idea of her having three older brothers comes from. Hikaru herself also helped flesh Airi out, but whereas Hikaru is very energetic Airi is ten years older and is more composed - at least until there are bald eagles in the picture. Sadly the mecha portions of MKR didn’t carry over to Airi’s story, although I do wish to find a way to include them in some capacity even if the story itself is not mecha. Although the angst stays; you must understand that I can’t just make things a cakewalk for my girls. That’s too easy!)
