The Big O - Why Memories Are Important
Mecha again.
Hello one and all, bit of a surprise to see something not on my list of upcomings right? Bit of a shock that I'd have written something from a mecha again?
Still; The Big O is something that, when actually viewed for yourself: makes total sense as to why it would be a show I would write about.
The Big O is quite well influenced by things I am rather familiar with and two of which I have written before: Ultraman, The Baron Trilogy, Batman The Animated Series, and so on. So to see with crews and writing team that I recognize so many voices and creators, why should I NOT give it a time of day?
And I sure happy I did, because I have absolutely fallen in love with this show. Both seasons of The Big O absolutely some of the best mecha content I've seen yet, from the true grasp of drama from the cast to the larger than life spectacles of the Megadeus fights. Every battle and every conversation feels strong, so impactful, and at the same time so incredibly human. There is a true sense of dread yet hope within the seams of The Big O, a world so bleak and noir but with people filled to the brim with the light and colors of character. Dorothy, Roger, Angel, Norman, even the most one-off of characters feel so memorable to the viewer because of the right team being on board to deliver on such memorable sequences and cast to deliver on exceptional performances.
The animation is also stellar, the simple yet complexity of designs gives opportunity to strong iconographies and piece of dialogue. From the shots of Big O in the snow to the tu es si gentil scene, there is such wonder that this was not quite a huge success in its native country and instead one successful here in the States. A simple design like Roger's can express so much and coupled to Mitsuru Miyamoto's performance can make the most of a scene.
It is quite ironic that the show about the value of memories for the human person can be as quite memorable as those, eh? The show helps provide why we as humans value even the most "insignificant" of moments: from the smallest interaction to the most extravagant of drama in our own lives. And when some characters become memories, it creates interesting perspective for what memories vs human mean. Do we still live as human in a memory of someone? or do we live as this larger than life being?
Does the memory of someone live to the real thing?

Getting to know your BL mutuals - 2022 Edition

What has been the BL that took you by surprise this year?
I only started watching BL in July, so the genre as a whole took me as a surprise. And early on I didn't really know what to expect, so I wasn't really surprised by anything. But recently both Big Dragon and Eternal Yesterday have moved me in unexpected ways. Big Dragon because the story ended up being so different, and much more interesting, than the first episode led me to expect, and Eternal Yesterday because I started it having basically no idea what to expect and it's blown me away with it's storytelling and it's weird concept that somehow is tender and heartbreaking and funny and so very human.
What has been the BL that you felt a bit disappointed with this year?
Probably I would say Color Rush. I know it didn't come out this year, but that's when I saw it. It was one of the earliest BLs I watched, and I went into it with high expectations based on hearing great things about it and it just didn't work for me. I was intrigued by the concept, the execution just felt too sketched out to make it work for me. (Also I really wished that the only time it shifted into color was when the dude whose name and sci-fi identity I forget was actually seeing in color, and that it was in black and white for the rest. That alone would have made the world building feel more solid.) That said, I'm curious to re-watch it (since it's so short) and see if my opinion changes with a lot more BL under my belt.
If we're talking shows this year, probably Senpai This Can't Be Love! which started off intriguing, and then just kind of fizzled out. I didn't even watch the last two episodes. War of Y was more frustrating and infuriating, but I didn't have expectations for it in the first place so I wasn't that disappointed.
What has been your favorite BL this year?
AHH! How do I chose??? The ones I've given 10/10 have been: I Told Sunset About You, Bad Buddy, Old Fashion Cupcake, Utsukushii Kare (My Beautiful Man), Semantic Error, Blueming, and To My Star 2: Our Untold Stories. But even though I was a bit frustrated with the ending, the one that felt most like my show as I watched it week to week was The Eclipse. So maybe I will put that.
What are your favorite BL couples (not just of 2022)?
I made another post listing my top ten BL relationships so I will copy and paste it here. I don't know if my "couple" list would be different, but in making this one I was thinking specifically about the way they love each other, and if it felt like a love I believed.

If you had to suggest a BL for someone what would it be?
Hmm. I'm taking this to mean someone who's never seen BL before. Probably Semantic Error or Old Fashion Cupcake. Both are really well crafted series, and are simple but still nuanced and interesting stories. I'd also put Bad Buddy on the list, in some ways it exists in conversation with other Thai BL, but it was the first I watched (besides ITSAY) and it still made sense to me and in a way that made it a good intro to Thai BL. There are many other shows that are a little odder or more difficult (ITSAY, Utsukushii Kare, Blueming) that I think could be a great introduction for the right person, but I wouldn't give them as a blanket rec.
And it's far, far too early to say as it's only been one episode, but if My School President keeps it up, that would be on the list as a tropey Thai high school BL expertly executed.
What's your non-BL favorite for this year?
I have watched very little that wasn't BL this year. But The Devil Judge, despite being pretty obviously a gay romance story under the censorship, isn't technically a BL so I will say that one. If I'm allowed to go back to fall of 2021, (it ended less than a year ago!) I will put Wheel of Time.

WHY IS THIS SUCH A TROPE? Like how come out of the three Persona games I know enough to speak to, all three of them have Sexy Teacher Who Is Wildly Inappropriate With Students? What the fuck. I'm uncomfortable. How did we get rid of Mister "everyone in this room is a slut destroying our society" and have not by default gone up in the world? goddammit.
I cannot help but assume that's the point. The shadows are getting more and more rowdy in each dungeon, the news of the channel is spreading, like.... that has to be part of the point.
Naoto shows up to let everyone know there is a prime suspect that the cops are trying to apprehend, but in doing so shoves his fucking foot so far in his mouth his stomach is chewing on louis vuitton

like for real, Naoto, dial down the condescending bullshit about 25% bruh

Two lightning bruisers, but Akihiko funnels all of his energy into tending to the temple of his body until he's acting like vegetables will personally slit his throat in his sleep, vs Kanji, who has like the same power and energy profile but doesn't have an outlet for it yet so he keeps doing funny outbursts that don't make sense even to him.
Lightning boys!!!! Who is lightning in P5 and are they this good? I hope so.
also look at his facepalm while studying. best boy. Also in his social link, we met a little boy sad about losing his "friend's" rabbit doll, and Kanji went looking for it and now plans to make the boy another one. LOVE.

OH SNAP THE ULTIMATE PERSONA IS LOCKED TO SLINKS? OH DAMN. I will miss Jiraiya and their awesome scarf. The locomotion of their spin has always brought me joy. But I'm hyped for Ultraman Buzzsaw Hulahooper.
So that was Magician! I.... am still not sold on Yosuke as the Magician honestly? I really liked his arc and the simmering anger and learning to deal with grief and coming to terms. But it's not very Magician-y at all? Eh whatever. Not everyone can be Junpei.
Sometimes, I don't have to look up these answers because I have a specific knowledge set and it includes weird card knowledge.
Rise is really compelling and funny. She's down to earth! She also will just get a translator! She's fun.

This game is like.... very good at portraying teenage immaturity. Like, everyone is generally a decent person until they're kind of a little shit about something or other. They're all very likeable but the maturity gap with SEES is really stark, yanno? Everyone in SEES was a traumatized kid who had already been through shit BEFORE they got their gun-shaped Superpower Launchers. the P4 team is just. dumb kids! with powers!

LOVERS SOCIAL LINK: GET! I ain't saying shit about how someone doesn't seem like Lovers, I learned my lesson.
However. One thing, another point of comparison from P3P-- I somehow doubt that Rise would do the Lovers thing with someone other than Reverie like Yukari did with Mitsuru. With the exception of Chie and Yukiko, it feels like everyone's most important relationship is with the MC, not with other characters.
I do feel very sad about that. Akihiko and Ken had Shinjiro, Yukari and Mitsuru had each other. Fuuka and Junpei arguably were closest to FeMC, but they weren't islands. Junpei and Akihiko were frequently in their own little scenes, and Fuuka had that with Junpei and Shinjiro as well.
With the P4 team, everyone orbits around the MC. Which isn't bad. It's fine. But it also loses something, you know?
The police still haven't actually gotten ahold of their suspect, and Nanako gets scared and runs over to sit by Reverie. God, that's crushing. Do you ever think about Nanako pre-P4? How much fucking time did she spend alone? God, I hate Dojima.

Review Proper
Just something about this is weird. The manga’s pretty fluid on its own, but it’s kinda, uhh, choppy? in the BLCD. Although I’m not sure if Smoky Nectar’s a serious manga with some comedy here and there, 50:50 serious and comedy, or is a comedy with some serious moments... it kinda doesn’t work in the BLCD. I mean, SatoTaku and Junya did well during the serious parts, but they seem to stumble during the comedy or the parts that lead to the comedic moments. Maybe the comedy just doesn’t transition well into the audio adaptation. *shrugs*
Let’s jump straight into the voice work, shall we?
I was quite interested in listening to this ‘cause yo??? Juujin bottoms??? If Daath and Kai were in these tones in Kemonohito, I would ship them 100% lmao, but then, uhh, idk, Junya was kind of a mess here. We’ll get to SatoTaku later, but I feel like they didn’t record this together. I do not like how Junya drags his moans on during their bedroom Redcross donations because he sounds very out of sync with SatoTaku’s ministrations (this is only very obvious in the first, though). I think he also has a hard time expressing the deadpan humor Mitsuru has. Sometimes my mind wanders off and starts having thoughts of either Reio, Ban, or Shouhei potentially being a better option for Mitsuru. That might just be my other issue with Junya. He was a bit too low for Mitsuru. I feel like if he was in a higher register, then he would’ve been able to express Mitsuru’s feelings better.
Now, as for SatoTaku, the man wasn’t free of my suspicions either. SatoTaku was a little too smooth to match Anna’s equally deadpan humor. I’m not saying that SatoTaku can’t comedy ‘cause sis you’ve heard Sonna ni, right??? But as compared to Anna, Shinobu’s more dynamic a character. Niyama and Ginger also gave the cast time to prepare before a big change in moods. Huh, I’m starting to think that this is the same thing that went down in Takasaki Bosco’s Torokeru Kuchibiru. I feel like Makonyan or Ono Yuuki would’ve done this better. But I know, I FUCKING KNOW, why Fifth Avenue got SatoTaku for this.
Thanks to Fifth Avenue, I know have my ringtone set to SatoTaku saying “erro” in the Mini Drama on repeat.
Goddamn I fucking flatlined on that one. I wasn’t really expecting much from the Mini Dramas, so thanks. 👍
Anyway, I also have to say that the sound effects as well as the bgms suck balls lmao. FIFTH AVENUE PLS. The main piano bgm also starts and ends in random places. There was also this part where Anna jumps off from a fucking building to the floor on the ground, making a table flip. Like we all know how a table sounds like flipped, right??? It definitely won’t sound like a chair shaking! 😂 I don’t think Fifth Avenue even cared at that point.
This was actually a pretty decent adaptation despite the many issues I have with it. It’s pretty faithful to the manga too, although I would recommend reading the manga once before ‘cause you wouldn’t know what they were doing in real time without the visual cues. This is an action bl too, after all. If you’re looking for another vampire (the “biter” thing also threw me off a bit, but the “nectar” concept wouldn’t survive without ig) bl, I raise you Yuri Azuru’s Fujitsu de Fumou na Koi no Kami-kon starring Okitsu and Egu. That one’s a little disappointing on the action front, but it was a good vampire bl nontheless. Okitsu’s Lark was also a good comedic/spontaneous type, so that’s good vampire + comedy!
