Anime Feminist’s Top Picks for 2022
Tumblr media
From romance to horror, seinen to shoujo, here are the stars that shone brightest from the past year.
How did we choose our recs?
Participating staff members picked five titles and ranked them. The only rule was that the series or season had to be complete as of December 2022 or been on the air without a break for over a year. This meant that split-cours and shows that began in 2022 and are still airing (like Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury) were NOT eligible. They’ll be rolled onto any 2022 lists.
We always want to emphasize that our recommendations are not meant as a rubber-stamp of “Feminist Approval.” Rather, we aim to highlight shows we found valuable and think might appeal to our readers as well, with any content warnings or caveats that might apply.
How are they ranked?
They’re not, really. We’ve highlighted our “top picks” that received the most staff member votes, but otherwise they’re just organized alphabetically. The team has varying tastes, as do our readers, and we didn’t want to try to put those tastes in a hierarchy.
Hey, you didn’t list my favorite show!
That’s okay! Like we said, we limited ourselves to a Top Five, and everyone has different tastes. If there’s something that slipped under our radar and you think it’s a series other feminist-minded viewers would enjoy, please let us and your fellow readers know in the comments!

Is there a name for subgenre of fantasy/sci-fi, when workplace sitautions get thrown into fantasy/sci-fi/superhero world?
Think something like I’m Quitting Heroing, Miss Kuroitsu from the Monster Department, Powerless, but also Space Cabbie and even some isekais.
I think this subgenre is great and should be extended to various work enviornments - from public schools to entretainment.
But it should have a name.

So the Miss Kuroitsu from the Monster Development Department anime has an English dub, even though the manga doesn't have so much as a crappy unofficial scanlation past chapter 4. So recently I've been watching the dub, and it reminded me of something I thought back in winter, when it was airing.
What the heck do trans people think of the series?
I'm specifically wondering about Wolf Bete, the manly monster who ends up in a female body due to executive meddling, and Magia Zwart, a boy who quite willingly uses a magical trinket that turns him into a magical girl. Both of those seem like very trans-friendly concepts, but their executions, especially Wolf's...
...leave me wanting an expert opinion. I'm just some cis dude on the Internet, I don't want to pretend I know what I'm talking about. I want to find someone who does know what they're talking about. (And also an English translation of the Kuroitsu manga that goes from the end of the anime to wherever the manga's at now.

Anime Discovery and Time of the Season present: THE TOP 25 BEST ANIME OF 2022!!
Time for this baby here! The top anime dogs of the year, mane!!
FINALLY!!! We are at the top dogs of  anime this year! I’m just gonna stop thinking that I’m not gonna go overboard with seasonal anime because it’s been two years straight that I have watched over 100+ seasonal anime and I think I’ve become satisfied with my choices. Granted, this is the year that Crunchyroll swallowed Funimation and became a thing we feared most: an anime monopoly and while…

Ah, come on!?!
ONE
Jaune sat before his secure terminal in his small bioengineering lab, slack jawed and totally dumbfounded. Head of and the sole staff member of the Inner Circle's Grimm Development Division, he just couldn't understand what he was being instructed to do.
Salem: I feel your proposal has merit, Executive of Espionage Oleander Arc.
Oleander (Executive of Espionage): Thank you, Lady Salem.
Salem: All in favour of this information gathering operation, please raise your hands.
Every Arc Sister plus Watts and Tyrian raise their hands.
Salem: All opposed?
Hazel raises his hand, along with Jaune.
Salem: Jaune I appreciate your desire to contribute to the discussion, you however are not an executive and your vote will not be recorded in the official meeting minutes.
Jaune: But...
Azalea Arc (Executive of Policy and Procedures): Jaune please, don't embarrass yourself. While you are head of the Grimm Development Division, you are not a member of the board.
Jaune: But why not? I'm the Head of the Department I'm the only member of... plus you're all deciding to ADD to my work load!
Jasmine Arc (Executive of Finances): Jaune as this operation will have the greatest impact on your department, it is only appropriate that you lead the operation. You will be compensated for your time.
Jaune: Compensated? Does that mean I'll get some staff members?
Daisy Arc (Executive of Human Resources) : I'm sorry that is not currently a priority. Combat and Liaison Departments along with Mobile Applications Development require such resources.
Jaune: But I'm the only...
Daisy Arc (Executive of Human Resources): I'm sorry, Jaune. It's not in our mandate for this quarter.
Jasmine Arc (Executive of Finances): Your department is constantly over budget and under performing, and as such we can not justify the additional resources to hire more staff.
Jaune: But... I would meet deadlines and budgets if I had staff to share my workload! I mean, I have six projects that are in limbo because I don't have the time to allocate to their development.
Jasmine Arc (Executive of Finances): It's not in this quarter's budgets. You'll have to make due. Sorry little brother.
Salem: We are getting off-topic. So as per the vote, I would like it noted in our minutes that the Proposal for Grimm Development to infiltrate Beacon to observe and analyze the training methods deployed by our foes in an effort to make more effective grimm as a countermeasure has been approved.
Jaune: This is not fair! What am I supposed to do with my latest project? Wolf Bete's brain is complete, I just need to work on fashioning his body...
Juniper Arc (Executive of Public Relations): I would like to introduce a counter suggestion and amend grimm Development's Wolf Bete proposal.
Salem: Please continue.
Juniper Arc (Executive Public Relations): We have conducted some focus groups about Wolf Bete's final design...
Jaune: Focus Group? How do have a focus group about grimm?
Juniper Arc (Executive of Public Relations): Simple, we structure it as the reveal of a potential new character for one of our mobile products. Regardless, while Wolf's abilities were well received and applauded, the consensus was that Wolf's appearance was not cute enough. So I suggest a reconfiguration of Wolf's body to one that of a young woman, preferably around Jaune's age.
Jaune: WHAT?!? DO you KNOW how much work that will require? Not to mention the reconfiguration of the brain to accept the new body structure?
Jasmine Arc (Executive of Finances): We can not allocate any further funds to this project, Jaune. You will have to make the needed adjustments with in current budget constraints.
Jaune: That is unaccepta...
Salem: All in favour of the proposed modifications to the Wolf Bete proposal?
Everyone raises their hands.
Salem: Motion unanimously passed. Grimm Development will make the directed modifications under the budgetary and time constraints originally agreed upon.
Jaune just slumped in his chair. It was just inconceivable the amount of overtime he was going to have to pull to reconfigure Wolf Bete's body along with preparations to attend Beacon.
Salem: If there is no further business (looks about seeing no one stepping forward) Meeting adjourned.
Jaune fell back into his seat as he watched all the holographic images blink out one by one. Until finally it was just him and Lady Salem.
Salem: Jaune, even though you are not an executive like your sisters, I wanted to reaffirm that you are a valued member of our organization.
Jaune: Thank you, Lady Salem.
Salem: This additional assignment will be rough on you, and as such aside from your Wolf Bete project, I am formally extending all your deadlines indefinitely until you return from this assignment.
Jaune: Really?
Salem: Yes. I look forward to seeing your bi-weekly reports.
Jaune: Bi-weekly? As in, one every two weeks?
Salem: (Chuckles) No, twice a week.
Any relief, Jaune had been feeling, fled his body in that instant. Even with his other grimm design projects shelved, he was still facing a huge backlog of work. As Lady Salem's hologram blinked out of existence, Jaune truly began to wonder if the choice his mother had made in talking Lady Salem out of World Destruction and into incorporating to facilitate World Domination... was really worth it.
/==/ 26 Hours Later /==/
The bio-pod drained and slowly rose into the ceiling. A pair of bare feet splashed through the small puddles of bio-fluid that has not drained away.
Wolf Bete: Finally! Those huntsmen and huntresses won't... hey? What's with my voice?
The nude figure rushed past the sleeping form of Jaune, and straight for the large mirror attached to the far wall.
Wolf Bete: What the HELL?!? (She reaches up and grabs her bare breasts) What the HELL?!?
Spinning about, the nude young woman with a wolf's tail and wolf ears, rushed over and yanked Jaune from his chair, and proceeded to start roughly shaking him.
Wolf Bete: What the HELL, dude?!?
Jaune: Ahhh, what? I'm up!
Wolf Bete: What did you do to me?!?
Jaune: Oh, you're awake, and... (Jaune's face grew bright crimson) naked!
Wolf Bete: Of course I am! I don't own any clothes! But that's not important! What happened to my body?!?
Jaune: Executive Decision.
Wolf Bete: Eh?
Jaune: I was out voted... but I can't vote, so does that count?
Wolf Bete: What did you do to me? I was supposed to be a hunk of a guy! Not... not this!
Jaune: The BoD amended your proposal, due to the feedback from a focus group. I was directed to give you the body of a young woman.
Wolf Bete: (Releases her grip on Jaune) A focus group?
Jaune: Focus Group.
Wolf Bete: Okay. Okay... this is NOT okay! I'm supposed to be a guy! I trained in all those simulations as a guy! Why didn't you fix my brain at the same time? I know I'm supposed to be a guy!
Jaune: Deadline and budget.
Wolf Bete: Er... what?
Jaune: The BoD wouldn't extend my deadline or increase my budget for your development... so I did what I could, and I think I did pretty good considering. I even came in under budget... just barely, but I'm under budget.
Wolf Bete: Eh?
Jaune: We should get you dressed. Now that you're complete, I have to present you to the BoD...
Wolf Bete: Why?
Jaune: Final approval, and quality assurance testing.
Wolf Bete: Quality Assurance testing?
Jaune: Yeah, they'll ask you some questions to make sure you have a functional mind, and can think independently, as well as a physical test.
Wolf Bete: Test? What type of test?
Jaune: You'll fight another grimm.
Wolf Bete: Fight... another... grimm?
Jaune: Yes.
Wolf Bete: And if I lose?
Jaune: Psh. You lose? Wolfie you are the most advanced bioengineered grimm I have EVER created! You can't lose! But try your hardest... I can't afford to have you lose.
Wolf Bete: Wolfie?
Jaune: What? Don't like it?
Wolf Bete: WAIT! You said I couldn't lose, and just said you can't afford for me to lose! Which is it?
Jaune: Both?
Wolf Bete: I'm confused.
Jaune: And cold.
Wolf Bete: And... HEY! Eyes up PERV!
Jaune: (Face cherry red) Sorry! Sorry! I suggest we get you some clothes...
Wolf Bete: (Covering herself with her arms and tail.) Fine clothes first, and then you're explaining all this to me... (pokes Jaune in his chest as he opens his mouth)... again.

Saturday Night Showcase> Miss Kuroitsu From The Monster Development Department
BW's Saturday Night Showcase> Miss Kuroitsu From The Monster Development Department
With a name that long your first guess should be it came from Japan. If you’re going to focus a story on the villain, please do not let the villain win. They’re the villain. The role of a villain in a story is to see them lose, to see the heroes overcome adversity and come out on top. That doesn’t mean you can’t have a villain be the protagonist, however. Perhaps it’s a redemption arc, or they’re…

okay so that post about middle aged magical girl made me think of an episode of Miss Kuroitsu From the Monster development department where the barkeeper at the bar Miss Kuroitsu goes to is a retired magical girl (the bar has a bunch of retired villains and heroes that go to it)
I tried googling what that is and wow that is one horny show.

mr. villain's day off / kyuujitsu no warumono-san
it's kinda in that space of sentai-inspired stuff like love after world domination (without the romantic parts as far as i can tell) or miss kuroitsu from the monster development department... mixed with a little bit of too cute crisis, but pretty hard focused (as of ep 1) on the guy mostly just chilling (while internally sometimes raging), holding his day off sacred. so he's more relatable than that liza for sure. not sure if there will be any fight scenes but there sure werent in this episode.
going by most things about it i think gf should hate this show, but something about it tells me she might not. in general so far..
Tumblr media
oh look! here warumono is experiencing one of the "little despairs" nanami talks about in jjk episode 9. (gf loved that dialogue. called it poetry.)

i can get way more annoying with the screenshots lol but i'll make this the last one:

Anime Rankings
Some personal rankings for anime I’ve checked out since this past fall. Which has tended to involve a lot of genderbending, magical girls, queer girls, and murderous girls, making for a pretty colorful mix. Most of these are shows/seasons I’ve watched to completion, I’ll note any exceptions.
Shows are tentatively ordered within ranks, but the categories themselves are more significant. I’m assuming watching with subs, there’s been big improvements to dubs over time but older dubs often leave a lot to be desired. Note that shows here are not necessarily free of various kinds of Anime Bullshit.
When I tried to actually explain the premises of the shows, it turned into a big mess very fast, so I’m sticking with brief comments here but I can elaborate if requested.
---
Rank A:
School Days
Magical Girl Ore
Revolutionary Girl Utena
My favorites of the bunch. School Days has gotten a lot of hate, but it’s an extremely underrated show that tops the list for its clever deconstruction of toxic masculinity. Magical Girl Ore is a rare example of F>M genderbending and I found it a lot of fun, although its humor isn’t always the most tasteful. Utena is extremely strange and certainly earns its reputation of "content warning everything", it’s also what started getting me back into anime about six months ago.
These three don’t have the broadest of target audiences, but I love all of them.
---
Rank B:
Fabiniku (“Life with an Ordinary Guy Who Reincarnated into a Total Fantasy Knockout”)
Revue Starlight
Magical Girl Raising Project
Saga of Tanya the Evil
So I’m A Spider, So What?
Blood-C
Some other shows I really enjoyed for various reasons, with quite a range of tones. Fabiniku is the lightest of the bunch, followed by Revue Starlight, and both of them are adorable. So I’m A Spider is pretty comedic overall but does get quite violent. (Those three are certainly the least eyebrow-raising of my current high ranks.)
Magical Girl Raising Project and Blood-C are on the much darker end of the scale and are particularly grisly, but they’re both fascinating in their own ways. Meanwhile, Tanya is, well, Tanya.
Spy x Family is still airing so I’m not fully ranking it yet, but once the season finishes, it’ll probably go here. In addition, expanding the scope to associated movies would put the movies for Revue Starlight and Tanya somewhere in here as well.
---
Rank C:
Princess Tutu
Kashimashi: Girl Meets Girl
Miss Kuroitsu from the Monster Development Department
Sailor Moon (S1)
Zombieland Saga (S1)
Slayers (S1)
This gets into the section where I have some more mixed feelings, shows I found usually fun but on shakier ground. Princess Tutu took some time for me to warm up to, but it’s quite good. Kashimashi is not good in any conventional sense, but I love it anyway. Miss Kuroitsu is generally pretty funny but also has its share of less-than-tasteful humor.
Sailor Moon and Slayers are classics but are noticeably dated. Zombieland Saga is pretty entertaining when its scenes land, which isn’t always. I've split off the second seasons of those three, although I haven’t yet watched far enough in Slayers Next to rate it.
High Guardian Spice isn’t an anime despite being on an anime site, but it would go somewhere in here. The Utena movie is very difficult to evaluate but would probably also go here. I could also throw in Konosuba and Isekai Quartet - at least their first seasons, which are what I’ve watched. They’re pretty funny but not the most memorable and don’t really fit my usual focus areas here, so I’m hesitant to actually rank them.
---
Rank D:
Yamada-kun and the Seven Witches
Ranma 1/2 [to ep22]
Zombieland Saga Revenge
These all have some appeal, but are hard for me to recommend watching in full. Yamada-kun is pretty fun when it’s not being uncomfortably horny or trying to have an actual plot, which is unfortunately most of the second half. Ranma is the oldest show here, I really enjoyed the first 13 episodes but then found it to get less funny and increasingly obnoxious. I think I’ve gotten as far as I can without using a watch list to seek out specific highlights. Zombieland Saga Revenge is fine, but I found it a bit dull and didn’t really like the season’s premise.
---
Rank E:
Sailor Moon R [to ep24]
Even after starting to use a watch list for Sailor Moon R, I still don’t think I’ve found an episode that’s better than mediocre. @delvinanaris has assured me that there's interesting stuff yet to come, so maybe this will go up a tier by the time I finish, but I don’t see it leaving the low ranks.
Blood-C’s movie would go here. It's pretty weak and contributes little, and even following the action can be tough with how terrible the lighting is.
---
Rank F:
Kämpfer [to ep2]
Kämpfer is garbage. I heard about its main character genderbending into a magical girl and foolishly got my hopes up for a character like in Magical Girl Raising Project or Miss Kuroitsu, but with a larger role. This was... not that. It's not even bad in a funny way, it’s just obnoxious in all the worst Horny Anime Bullshit ways. I suggest avoiding it.
---
That wraps up the rankings, as well as the admittedly silly number of almost-rankings. For others looking for genderbending, the relevant ones are Magical Girl Ore, Fabiniku, Magical Girl Raising Project, Saga of Tanya the Evil, So I’m A Spider, Kashimashi, Miss Kuroitsu, Yamada-Kun, Ranma, and (ugh) Kämpfer.
On that note, Zombieland Saga and High Guardian Spice have more realistic trans characters that I quite liked. (Personally I’d say Princess Tutu also has viable trans readings, but that’s getting further from the point.) Alternatively, for those who’ve brushed off School Days, maybe this will inspire another look at it.
Again, there’s plenty of colorful stuff here, so if you do check out any of these shows, don’t expect them to be particularly clean. (With how much I post about kid’s shows, I feel like I need to emphasize that.) But for those who are on board with that, maybe something will grab your interest.
